The final day at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta - 15th">Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta 2022</a> drew to a close yesterday with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12027" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegra APC7823.95m (78'7&quot;)Green Marine2014">Allegra</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Magic Carpet 330.47m (99'12&quot;)Wally2013">Magic Carpet Cubed</a> reigning champions of their respective categories. After four days of racing around the La Maddalena archipelago the event closed with a prize giving ceremony held at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2826" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (Company)">YCCS</a> Piazza Azzurra. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/229446/image/large-8c50b92f35f56c355e6163833c2522f2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/229446">The weather conditions for the day were overcast skies and a shifty variable breeze with the race once again scheduled for 12:30pm. The Race Committee made the decision to opt for a shorter southerly course due to low winds, with the starting line located off Porto Cuervo. Both the Multihull and Superyacht Division would round the island of Soffi, before heading for the Bisce pass and the finish line. The Multihulls once again started first, with the Superyacht Division following with a staggered start procedure.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/229455/image/large-5631f315d223971d4450eed92ccb9469.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/229455">The Multihull Division saw Lord Irvine Laidlaw’s, Highland Fling XVII win the day’s race and secure his first win of the event. The Multihulls had been battling it out all week, with Adrian Keller’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12027" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegra APC7823.95m (78'7&quot;)Green Marine2014">Allegra</a> winning three consecutive races. But it was due to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12027" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegra APC7823.95m (78'7&quot;)Green Marine2014">Allegra</a>’s tactical decision to sail close to the coast on the approach that allowed her rival Highland Fling XVII to overtake her right at the finish line. The twin-masted 1915 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff</a> schooner is one of the oldest yachts still sailing today. Meanwhile, this is the first time Shenandoah of Sark has attended the event. Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta begins in Sardinia this week

He is more than accomplished on board a sailing superyacht, so there are few surprises left for Marcus Blackmore when it comes to competing in one of the many regattas around the world. What thrills him now are the encounters with planet Earth which he and his wife, Caroline Furlong, get to experience on board their 24.72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6084" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ammonite24.72m (81'1&quot;)Southern Wind2016">Ammonite</a> - the modern sloop and hull number three in the SW82 series built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a>, which has since been <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/yacht-ammonite-sold" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">sold</a> and is soon to be replaced by Marcus’ latest purchase: the new and in-build SW96. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/92894/image/large-61c7b8becd678f0100416d52b31508b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92894">Having done his homework, Marcus was introduced to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a> during a boat show. “I first looked at a smaller&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a>&nbsp;boat and had a broker show me around. Then, when I found I had reason to be in South Africa, I visited the factory and bought the 82. It was a good experience!&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a>&nbsp;were very generous with their time,” he explains. Now spending six to eight weeks a year on board <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6084" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ammonite24.72m (81'1&quot;)Southern Wind2016">Ammonite</a> since taking delivery in 2016, Marcus recalls how the additional investments he made during the build certainly paid off. “I wanted to put on a party for all those at the shipyard who were building my boat. So I had a friend with a vineyard and gifted everyone some wine and laid on some good-quality food. I wanted the team to know that quality was important to me and that they were helping us to realise our dream. I remember one guy in particular who was responsible for all things electrical, he said to me that no owner had done an event like this before and he would make sure that the electrical systems on board would never fail me… and still to this day they haven’t! The simple things in life make a difference, especially when you recognise people.”Marcus and Caroline visited the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a> shipyard and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta Yacht Design</a> studio in Milan during the build to help steer the design to suit their needs. Aside from wanting <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6084" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ammonite24.72m (81'1&quot;)Southern Wind2016">Ammonite&nbsp;</a>to be for both business and pleasure, the couple requested that the designers create a certain ‘wow-factor’ for them. “They didn’t tell me what they had done, so when we took possession of the boat we went downstairs and the coffee table had a beautiful hand-crafted scrabble table on top, because Caroline loves to play scrabble - it’s her thing - but not with me - she always beats me, and I like winning. ” <img src="/uploads/store/photo/92889/image/large-e44a514376a3d6cd5bc48ecdf34fe5f1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92889">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6084" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ammonite24.72m (81'1&quot;)Southern Wind2016">Ammonite</a>&nbsp;is a good boat to take part in superyacht regattas with, but she is also a very good cruiser. I think she is the first&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a>&nbsp;that doesn’t have a full teak deck. None of my race boats have teak decks as my crew shouldn’t spend their lives cleaning teak decks - plus we saved 350kg!” These considerations to the design of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6084" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ammonite24.72m (81'1&quot;)Southern Wind2016">Ammonite</a>, the custom lifting-keel included, derive from Marcus’ lifetime on the water. “I’ve always had a love of the water. Even when I was in the army during the Vietnam War I was on the Australian landing strip. I’ve also been on the National Marine Safety Committee and the board of the Waterways Authority,” he recalls.&nbsp;Touching on the most prominent moments of his time on the water, and despite his mellow attitude towards his achievements, Marcus has competed in a multitude of renowned yacht races, including the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race - 2018">Sydney Hobart Race</a>, Hamilton Island Race Week, the Admiral’s Cup and the Australian Farr 40 where he stayed at the top of the leaderboard between 2000 and 2007. “When I started out racing, I spent most of my time on the grinders. One day, I asked Peter Green, my friend who taught me ocean racing, how do I get down the back? You guys seem to be having more fun than me! And he said I needed to buy a boat. So I went and bought a boat and I have been down the back ever since,” Marcus explains. “I’ve done 12 Hobart races but that is not the sort of sailing I want to do anymore - the Hobarts are a roll of the dice, and where you finish depends on what sort of weather you get, the length of your boat and if you manage to get to the Derwent river by 18:00 - if not, there is a fair chance you’ll run out of breeze and you’ll sit there for the whole night and watch the rest of the fleet come up behind you and your handicap go out of the door!”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/92891/image/large-f2ff690f5c7990b664ea2f07958411b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92891">Turning his attention to superyacht regattas, Marcus brought <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6084" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ammonite24.72m (81'1&quot;)Southern Wind2016">Ammonite</a> from South Africa for her debut at the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in June 2016. “I only want to do regattas now. I am not bothered about ocean racing now because I steer my own boat, and in long ocean races you can’t do that for more than two hours otherwise you’re not being fair to the rest of the crew. We do regattas regularly with my MC38 or TP52, and in one weekend we might be in seven races, which is more than the average club member does in half a season. You learn more about the rules, sailing, sail trim and all those sorts of things that way,” he explains. After placing in all her races during her debut regatta, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6084" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ammonite24.72m (81'1&quot;)Southern Wind2016">Ammonite</a> also competed in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) and the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2019 - 30th">Maxi Rolex Cup</a>.&nbsp;It was a successful first season in both sport and leisure as Marcus and Caroline continued through the Panama Canal to Tahiti and Samoa, where Marcus is an honorary chief of a village. “Then we visited Tonga to go swimming with the whales, which I think is the most wonderful experience I have ever had in yachting or any marine environment.” Next on the list was Fiji, which soon became a repeat destination for the couple. “The Pacific is a unique and rewarding place. The people are quite wonderful. They don’t have much money and it occurred to me that I have spent a large part of my life trying to create wealth with a belief - which is sometimes challenging - that if I bought a bigger boat, house or car it would make me happier. So I was on that wealth treadmill of life if you like, and then when I came to Fiji I saw people who have very few material possessions but are so happy! Their values and culture are extremely strong, far stronger than anything in the Western world.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/92895/image/large-5407d1b7afb69fa3b686d7af6d76c443.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92895">“We have built an evacuation centre and a pre-school in the Lau Islands. Also a toilet block, which cost the same as if I had taken a dozen people out for dinner in a really good restaurant in Sydney. The people of Lau are very appreciative of what you can do for them,” Marcus explains. As they continued to travel on board <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6084" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ammonite24.72m (81'1&quot;)Southern Wind2016">Ammonite</a>, which was named after the extinct marine mollusc, the couple collected more anecdotes that depict how special superyacht ownership can be, especially as Marcus recalls visiting a particular restaurant in Italy: “In Capri, there is a family-run restaurant under the lemon trees called Da Paolino. Now, I love a caprese salad, so I am sitting there and out comes this big tomato and, knowing how big tomatoes are farmed in Australia, I thought this can’t be good… it was the best tomato I have ever tasted! So we are planning to go back there as soon as possible before we go to the Ionian Islands.” &nbsp;With more plans to dip in and out of the Mediterranean to the few places that they have not yet discovered, and back to those they admire, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6084" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ammonite24.72m (81'1&quot;)Southern Wind2016">Ammonite</a> will come out of the water at the end of the year for what Marcus describes as “a haircut and shave,” more specifically, a paint job and other minor maintenance work. In the meantime, Marcus has a new toy to play with as he recently purchased the third unit in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a>’s SW96 line. The new 31.46-metre superyacht, also to be named Ammonite, is currently under construction and scheduled to set sail following her delivery during the spring of 2020. “I will always do another boat! I am always ‘kicking tyres’ and attending boat shows - that’s just my fun!” he explains. The all-new Ammonite will join Marcus’ small fleet of yachts, including an in-build Palm Beach GT60, both of which are to remain at his home in Sydney. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/92892/image/large-0471818c420fed9ae951d3747c2b4289.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92892">Marcus Blackmore and his journey as a superyacht owner goes beyond his time as a successful competitor. New name for Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

After a week of exciting racing at the 2019 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, it was announced that the event will return in 2020 under a new name.

The initial line-up of superyachts taking part in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2019 has been announced. The 12th edition of the regatta, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda will kick off in Porto Cervo between 3rd-8th June this year. Though the superyacht business is a relatively small industry, it is packed with international professionals from all walks of life, and it can certainly be easy to get lost in the sea of faces we're presented with at boat shows, yachting events and beyond. In this series of articles, we take a step back from rushed business meetings and hurried networking and sit down with professionals from across the wide spectrum of the superyacht business to learn more about who they are and what they do for the industry. In this week’s episode, we get to know Mike Sanderson, a two time Volvo Ocean Race winner, a veteran of three America's Cup campaigns, and a name familiar to anyone with a penchant for all things sailing. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/26076/image/large-0a6214e7503ee2995fde453b4d813426.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26076">You’ve recently taken over as CEO of Doyle Sails from founder Robbie Doyle - tell us a bit about yourself and why you decided to get into the sail making industry.&nbsp;I left school to become a sailmaker in 1988 so I have been involved in the sailmaking industry all my working life. For me sailmaking as a teenager was the road into professional sailing and, in fact, I still think it’s a great avenue for those who aspire to become a professional sailor.Tell us about your journey to Doyle Sails.I have only been involved in Doyle Sails for the last six years, so for sure I’m still a bit of a newbie in the world of Doyle as some of the people involved have been here since Robbie and Janet Doyle started the company in the early 80s… Over the years the company has had so many milestones, but one of the biggest was when Richard Bouzaid and Chris McMaster launched the STRATIS membrane plant back in 2003. The sailmaking industry has changed so much, from lots of small companies buying the same fabric as the big boys to really being dominated by the big players now who are manufacturing their own ‘bespoke’ sail membranes. For Doyle Sails to have a well-known market-leading product such as Stratis is pivotal to our growth. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/26073/image/large-3d5fd802b40ccc238edb38a3e0661cac.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26073"> 2018 New Zealand Millennium Cup winner Ammonite, featuring Doyle sails A number of the New Zealand builders have shut their doors over the past few years... can the industry in New Zealand ever recover?&nbsp;Yes, New Zealand has lost two of the biggest builders with Alloy Yachts and Fitzroy closing, but we still have very strong players such as Yachting Developments and McMullen &amp; Wing, who are world leaders in their respective markets. New Zealand has also adapted their priorities very quickly from building superyachts to servicing superyachts. Auckland, in particular, is very lucky with the powers that be were switched onto that and built additional berths where required to allow for growth in superyacht service. The Westhaven area, for example, is full of superyachts all the way from Silo Park through to Orams Marina. On top of that, you have Whangarei and Tauranga that are now well set up to cater for the big boats. So even though the new builds have slowed down the whole market is busy from refits which is great.I would be lying if I said that we didn’t miss as many new builds, but like everyone else we have adapted and with sails they don’t last forever so luckily for the sailmakers often people are scheduling their refits in New Zealand about the time their sails need replacing. &nbsp; In our recent interview with Neville Crichton for the Innovation issue of the SuperYacht Times newspaper, he noted that the sailing yacht sector is technically the most innovative in yachting. What do you see as some of the most important innovations in sailing over the past 10 years?For me that’s easy, it has to be how we deal with foils and foiling and which will also affect the superyacht world. There’s already a superyacht in production with a “DSS” system, so a foil to generate Dynamic Stability…so stability from speed. Then there’s the big 100ft Tri’s already launched who are looking to foil around the world non-stop…I have no doubt this will be a big part of sailing’s evolution over the next ten years. What's next for Doyle Sails?&nbsp;Our industry demands that innovation is constant, and we already have sails and concepts out there in the real-life test lab always looking for better, faster, but durable and long lasting ways of building sails. The last 12 months we have seen the launch of our ‘Cable-less Code 0’ which really has taken off as the only way to do a Code Zero in 2018, but we still have an awful lot more that we can do with that technology. Not only for the Code Zero but the whole inventory.
