During interviews journalists always turn to yacht designers and ask them to define their style, and it is true that many designers have an aesthetic that consistently occurs in their work. For many it is that unique style that owner’s turn to, but for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Cristiano Gatto Design</a>, it is not a style that remains consistent, but an approach to design that allows the team to create truly bespoke and beautiful superyachts. We recently caught up with Cristiano to find out a little more about that unique methodology that has led him to the creation of &nbsp;more than 200 superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227248/image/large-848494a0d0d564659e8036e1d8e0b4a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227248">Pitching himself and his studio as artisans with artistic backgrounds that use their capacity and knowledge to create unique yachts that are as unique as the owner’s themselves. “I never say to a client ‘buy my style, buy my methods,’ because we have worked on a myriad of superyachts in an array of unique and diverse styles over the years that reflect the owner’s wishes.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227246/image/large-c762286e638a0bc3cc07c4774fbdb901.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227246">All <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>’s yachts are created using the same employment of old school processes, honed over 29 years in the industry. When a client first approaches the studio, the first thing to understand is what has provoked this decision to build or refit a yacht. Understanding the dream behind the decision allows the designers to channel that energy into the finished product, and it is something they continue to return to throughout the design process. “We are translators from dream to reality and we use our design language to do that in the most accurate way possible.” Every superyacht begins with a list of wishes, not only for the yacht herself because many owner’s don’t yet know what kind of yacht they want, but of the life that will be lived aboard the yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227244/image/large-4780c2dd6a4a6f9268818365ff101796.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227244">“All of that dialogue helps us to build up an initial picture. We get everything onto paper and then join the dots – within those dots is the first iteration of the yacht and we work on that until we can envisage the final pictures.” While we would assume that yacht design always begins with the exterior lines of a vessel, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>’s studio can begin from single rooms, even single pieces of key furniture that are pivotal to the owner’s wishes, and from there the formation of the vessel can take root.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227242/image/large-37df87d04489085960fd97a3fd27522a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227242">This is so pivotal to the studio’s methods in fact that during the initial presentation of the design, the designers also introduce the key materials. “Everything needs to be connected, what you see, feel, smell, it all needs to be aligned and if owner’s are presented with an entire finish, it gives them a better understanding of the overall impact – senses are everything.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227243/image/large-01fdadcc638c2c7548dd43b6657ad1b0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227243">Once those initial designs are consolidated, the process moves to the second step which is translated in the technical drawings. Here the engineer in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a> comes out, as he and his team employ a thorough R&amp;D process to understand the mechanisms behind the various concepts they’ve envisaged. “The interiors are not just what you see the first time you step aboard the yacht, it is what you will see over the next 5-10 years, so if we have designed something where the materials don’t correlate with the mechanics, it won’t last.”When it comes to refit, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>’s approach is much the same, though now owner’s can have even more trouble when it comes to a redesign because it's hard to envisage a complete yacht as a blank canvas. In this case, the team visits yachts with the owners and works out what they like or dislike about them. “Budget is always a major factor in refitting because it can be the limitation to the level of transformation.” Often the design team will reimagine existing pieces of furniture and reincorporate them into the design in a totally different way that not only saves money, but also time and the destruction of often perfectly good objects and materials.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23624/image/large-45b8788dcba9e39c6591a40a23f05fd8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23624">Despite not having a consistent ‘style’ you can spot a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Cristiano Gatto Design</a> yacht because of the details of construction that few other designers would implement. “One owner called me shortly after we delivered their yacht, and he said ‘I am lying in bed and am getting so much joy from the details of the ceiling moulding that we never discussed and I would only notice from this exact place in bed. I know that you created that especially for me, so thank you’.” For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>, this epitomises the approach the studio takes. By truly getting to know an owner, you are able to gather information and make informed decisions about what they will take joy from, even in the tiny details.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23621/image/large-513b3acb079434c7aa8a5281c47dfc94.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23621">“One of the best moments is when you see a client step aboard the yacht for the first time and they are surprised by the final effect. That demonstrates the richness of the finish and the detail of the design because they’ve seen the 3D renders, they’ve seen the materials, but only the designer truly understands how they will come together – that surprise is everything.”

Designing, developing and building the high-speed 45-metre superyacht Amore Mio was nearly an all-Dutch affair. One experienced owner gathered an all-star team to create his latest superyacht, spearheaded by his loyal captain in command for the past 16 years. Amore Mio truly is a testament to Heesen Yacht’s ability to conform to nearly any custom mould presented by their clients.

Set to make a star appearance at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show next month, Amore Mio has been cruising the Mediterranean this past summer season. Her first Mediterranean stopover was the mystical island of Malta where she took centre stage in a photo shoot with the rugged ancient trade island as a fitting backdrop.

Omega Architects came up with an angular and exciting sporty exterior design that leaves little doubt as to the performance capabilities of Amore Mio. On the other spectrum of her 30-knot top speed is welcomed range of 2,750 nm while maintaining 12 knots, that enables comfortable cruising between ports in the Mediterranean, or island hopping in the Caribbean.

The yacht’s interior is the work of designer Cristiano Gatto, and is a mix of style and sophistication, with luxurious fabrics and warm wood paneling creating a cosy environment for her guests. “Cristiano Gatto has done a really splendid job on the interior. It’s a very comfortable yet contemporary design for a summer use boat,” comments Amore Mio’s American Captain, Tripp Hock.

Amore Mio features a traditional five cabin layout, with a grand master suite forward on main deck that houses comforts such a large corner sofa and vanity table on port side. The suite is completed with a large walk-in wardrobe and generous en suite bathroom, both separating the cabin from a potentially noisy technical area on the foredeck.

The four remaining cabins consist of two double and two twin cabins, located on the lower deck. The two VIP cabins, placed amidships, have their beds turned to face inboard. This arrangement allowed this lower deck to accommodate the central staircase’s landing which leads to each of the four cabins.

This space provides a wind-free corner to escape while still being able to enjoy the surrounding views. “The massive deck spaces both on the main deck and flybridge make you think you are on a much bigger boat,” Hock continues.

Heesen’s sporty 45m superyacht Amore Mio unveiled

Delivered in February this year, the 45 metre Amore Mio is one of Heesen Yacht’s latest additions to their custom fleet and was recently the star in a photo shoot that took place in the clear waters around the island of Malta. Get a better insight into Amore Mio’s on board features <a href="http://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/captain-s-view-heesen-s-new-amore-mio-sets-sail/" target="_blank">here</a>, where we speak with the yacht’s captain, Tripp Hock, to discover his views on the project.

Exclusive: Heesen Yacht’s Amore Mio captured in Malta

The 45 metre Heesen superyacht Amore Mio has been delivered and is currently under way to Gibraltar on her maiden voyage. Labeled ‘the largest and most powerful sports yacht ever built in the Netherlands’, Amore Mio has now been handed over to her owners in international waters as scheduled.

The intensive sea trial period out on the North Sea proved that the yacht will not only be capable to race along at 30 knots from Monaco to St Tropez, but will be able to keep her guests comfortable when the sea state turns unfavorable. Captain Tripp Hock comments: “As the first Heesen sea trialed at ‘light load’, I was eager to see in particular how the gyro stabilisers would function on such a buoyant ship in the North Sea. To my relief, all the coffee cups stayed on the tables.”

As the new 45 metre Heesen superyacht Amore Mio sets off on a series of intensive sea trials on the North Sea, we see no better time to catch up with her captain, Tripp Hock, to discover his views on a project that he has been involved in from the start.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/158005/image/large-7c54baaed5b9a8c3e7f3714c76136d16.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158005">Captain Tripp grew up in the outskirts of New York and had started working on Wall Street after university. He quickly realised that city life was not the fit for him, and then found himself in the Caribbean working on dive charter boats in his early 20’s. He has come a long way from his deckhand days and has for the past 16 years worked for the same owner, whose latest vessel is the brand new 45 metre Heesen Amore Mio. The yacht is another of Heesen’s nearly all-Dutch projects with Omega Architects having drawn the vessel’s sweeping and sporty curves, and Van Oossanen Naval Architects taking care of everything below the water line - making sure Amore Mio doesn’t skip a beat while underway. Italian designer Cristiano Gatto was tasked with the styling of the interior. We asked Captain Tripp a few quick-fire questions about his latest command.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/158006/image/large-696188a377715878946e087e87f109ef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158006">What was your involvement in the build process of the yacht?I had the fantastic opportunity to be a part of the project from a very early stage during the Technical Specification review – every Captain’s dream of being able to get the yacht fitted out properly according to the owner’s wishes and the crew’s needs from day one.How has your experience in the industry contributed to the successful launch of Amore Mio?Having been involved with 4 new builds at Heesen alone, I am in a great position knowing already all the department heads personally and being able to fast track requests and issues directly to the right people. This knowledge and intimacy at any yard makes the build process far more streamlined.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/158007/image/large-5794ff3ee60c982b59cb2e82b432b97f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158007">The yacht is built for a top speed of 30 knots, what comforts have guests to look forward to on board?Cristiano Gatto has done a really splendid job on the interior. It’s a very comfortable yet contemporary design for a summer use boat. Further more, the massive deck spaces both on the main deck and flybridge make you think you are on a much bigger boat.Can you name your personal favourite on-board feature?There are too many! The owners enjoy daily morning yoga sessions, so we have catered for that with a giant outdoor yoga area on the flybridge. Plenty of new toys and activities for the Owner’s young children with a beautiful Boesch tender that will transport guests to and from shore. Heesen have done a great job with their unique MOB reaction system (MOB buttons around the boat that automatically drop life rings, mark the chart plotter, sound alarms for crew, etc.). Lastly, from the crew perspective – its hard to find a boat that has more than enough exterior storage for the toys and equipment – and this one does!<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/158008/image/large-964462a794f6c3873117ed2ff7a3b62d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158008">How well is the yacht set up in terms of crew amenities and accessibility to the guest areas?Heesen always does a great job on the crew areas – the cabins are smartly laid out and finished well for the purpose. Another nice feature saving a lot of equipment onboard is a hierarchy in the Entertainment system matrix – when guests are on board all the media players, Apple TV’s, receivers etc have dedicated use to the guest cabins, but off charter we throw a switch and the crew gets to make use of them.What sets Heesen apart from other shipyards which you have worked with in the past?Of course Heesen, along with many of the other northern European yards, are well known for their build quality and attention to detail. Captain’s view: Heesen’s new Amore Mio sets sail

Last week Heesen launched what they claim to be the largest and most powerful sports yacht ever built in the Netherlands. The 45 metre superyacht Amore Mio is an all-aluminium vessel powered by twin MTU engines powering her to a top speed of 30 knots. Designed by Omega Architects, Amore Mio’s performance is matched by striking angular lines giving her a dynamic appearance even at anchor.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157190/image/large-3fd904d9d2a2b92f57fde92381292a91.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157190">Known as project Necto during her build, the yacht was christened during a private ceremony held at Heesen’s facility in Oss. Heesen’s in-house engineering team designed a solid semi displacement hull that ensures a fast yet highly comfortable and stable ride. Fuel efficiency was another priority, and the low resistance hull aids in the yacht’s impressive range of 2750nm, ideal for hopping between Caribbean islands.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157191/image/large-513a777a1b1d9cfc67f729db4219b849.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157191">The yacht’s interior is the work of designer Christiano Gatto, and is said to be a mix of style and sophistication, with luxurious fabrics and warm wood panelling creating a cosy environment for her guests. Amore Mio features a traditional 5 cabin layout, with a grand master suite forward on main deck that houses comforts such a large corner sofa and vanity table on port side. Heesen launches 45 metre superyacht Amore Mio

Heesen Yachts has announced that the first 45m fly bridge vessel YN 17145 – Project Necto – is sold. This powerful sportster, the largest built by a Northern European shipyard, will be capable of thundering along at an impressive 30 knots thanks to her well-engineered all-aluminium semi-displacement hull and twin MTU 16V 4000 M73L engines.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/149171/image/large-5752671d78a10553eda2ebe855f108e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/149171"> Speed and power combined with uncompromised luxury and comfort are the characteristics of this semi-displacement yacht that will have a range of 2.750Nm at 12 knots.Frank Laupman of Omega Architects has created the exterior lines of the yacht. True to form Laupman has interpreted the Dutch shipyard DNA with a touch of innovation by introducing the ‘knuckle’ – a design element that interrupts the line of the raked bow and gives this new breed of Heesen — with its much sharper and narrower bow — a particularly aggressive look.The interior décor of YN 17145 is by acclaimed Italian designer Cristiano Gatto who is currently working on his third project with the Dutch shipyard. The Owners chose a contemporary yet cosy design for the interior of their 45m sportster. Warm Canaletto walnut is the main veneer, which perfectly complements the light tones of Loro Piana fabrics and the warm colours of the different finishes; pale blue soft furnishings give a relaxed and light feeling to the yacht’s interior. As an expansive 84-square metre area, completely free from fixed furniture, it is available for guests to carry out their morning exercise – yet another unusual and particularly remarkable design feature on a yacht of this size.YN 17145 will be delivered to her owners after intensive sea trials in the North Sea in January 2016.
