Perini Navi's performance on the used sailing yacht sales market

SYT iQ: Perini Navi's performance on the used sailing yacht sales market

Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Charles P. ‘Buddy’ Darby oozes a warm, southern American demeanour and a welcoming sense of confidence that makes one feel instantly at ease - qualities rare of, but well suited to, the man at the head of one of the largest marina developments the Caribbean has ever seen. As pleasant as a warm and personable attitude is, however, it’s really the years’ of experience in investment and development that make Darby the right man at the helm of building Christophe Harbour marina in St. Kitts.

The majority of this experience hails from a successful 30 year career at the head of the real estate developers, Kiawah Partners. Co-founding the company in the late 80s, notable projects include breathing life into Kiawah Island, a 10,000-acre sea island located 21 miles south of Charleston, as well as establishing the Irish golf haven, The Lodge At Doonbeg - the latter of which was acquired by the Trump empire in 2014. “For the last 30 years I’ve been building golf courses, a resort, hotels… a lot of what I’m bringing to Christophe Harbour,” he tells us. The difference, he continues to say, is found in the way he conducts these developments; “I take a lot of time as custodian of the land to build it out. It’s not like the phoenix rising quickly from the ashes. I take time and strive to be more environmentally sensitive. I use a lot of natural materials in the buildings that I build, materials that are indigenous to the area, and always maintain a profound respect for the environment.”

A sense of environmental and social awareness isn’t, of course, just about being a good citizen of planet Earth. There are obvious benefits to big business being vocal about their dedication to charitable projects - even if their actual dedication to such causes is decidedly smaller than they would like to admit. With Darby, however, this philanthropic method of conducting business is something that runs deeper than looking out for the short term gain of favourable publicity, and is a quality passed on to him from his father, founder of the Darby Family Investment Group. “My father started a children’s hospital years ago, so we’ve been very supportive of children’s causes as a group. In each project I do, I create a foundation that is a function of sales. For instance, at Christophe Harbour, around 0.5% of every sale goes into the Foundation, which has contributed $500,000 to the larger community to date. The more real estate we sell, the bigger that Foundation becomes.”

An additional quality Darby has inherited from his family which also plays advantageously into the development of Christophe Harbour is his strong connection with yachting. Not only has Darby been connected with sailing from a young age, but has co-owned the iconic 47-metre Perini Navi built Andromeda La Dea for several years. Darby elaborates, saying, “I started sailing at an early age, and just like I like all types of music, I like all types of boats, but I gravitate mostly towards sailing boats. I currently own Andromeda with a partner and we’ve owned her for eight years. She’s 25 years old this year, so she’s really starting to become a classic yacht. She was built by Tom Perkins, the original owner of Maltese Falcon. She had an incredible crew and it’s been a very useful tool to understand the yachting industry at every level as we proceed with building our own megayacht hub. And of course, she is great for entertaining and enjoying the Med and the Caribbean with my family.”

With the vast project in St. Kitts, this means that while Darby has enjoyed several excursions in the Mediterranean (“The Amalfi Coast, I love,” he says. “Sicily has become more and more my favourite place - it’s totally unspoiled. Of course from St. Tropez up to Monaco is always very nice. I mean, where isn’t nice in this region?"), unfortunately his time aboard Andromeda La Dea has been somewhat limited in recent years. He says, “The time that I do have on her is very special, but chartering her is a way I keep the crew active as well as a way to defer expenses on the boat. A boat like that tends to need to be operated, and the worst thing you can do is have a boat sit unused. Having her for charter for four or five weeks doesn’t take away much from my personal use of the boat, but it keeps everybody stimulated and happy.”

Lack of time is almost definitely a factor in the decision to list this impressive sailing yacht for sale with Northrop &amp; Johnson, but Darby is realistic as to what he is looking for next - perhaps when a little more of his time is freed up. “I’m sure I won’t be boatless forever,” Darby explains, “but I think I would get something that I can keep down in St. Kitts in the future. Probably another sailing boat. I have a little boat that I’m going to take down there soon, a 36’ Hinckley - a picnic boat, which is great!”

We talked to Darby in more detail regarding the exciting development of Christophe Harbour and the island of St. Kitts, and what this means for the region.

Tell us where it all started with the development of the marina and community on the island of St. Kitts.

I ended up at St. Kitts with the Christophe Harbour project around 7.5 years ago. I had been working with a team of professionals for 25+ years at Kiawah, and I had already begun to look around to see what potential projects were out there. The opportunity came up with Christophe Harbour in the Caribbean and when I went there, the sheer beauty was incredible. It’s one of the few places in the world where I had a blank canvas: a total of 2,500 acres with tremendous beauty and physicality that I could bring my skill set and dedicate my team to, and hopefully replicate the core of what we do. We’re utilising our extensive experience in development, but it’s not about taking what I’ve done previously and plopping it down in St. Kitts. It's about building something unique and suited to this special island.

On the point of St. Kitts being relatively untouched, have you faced any criticism regarding the development of Christophe Harbour?

I think any time you have a foreign investment in a relatively under-developed island, you’re going to face some criticism. St. Kitts was completely agricultural to almost 2005, and the government at the time was trying to evolve the economy and saw an opportunity in tourism based on neighboring islands of St. Maarten and St. Barths.

We met with the government and discussed how we could best serve this process. Our development philosophy has always been “designing with nature” so it seemed like a good fit for us and for the government to do this project. I am proud to be a steward of this land and when I first looked at it, I could already see how the marina, the golf course, the hotels, homes would fit perfectly into the existing landscape. We don’t want to come in and "create" a place, for us it’s about taking the place that already exists and enhancing it.

Some people do not know all of the facts and make the assumption that I am coming in and making huge amounts of money. In fact, the opposite is true - this a rewarding but time and finance intensive, long term project. We like to build slowly, over time.

What are going to be the highlights of Christophe Harbour and why will it stand out in the region?

We’re based in a protected former salt pond on a peninsula, which is a real hurricane hole, so that is a definite attraction. Because of our orientation, the wind can be blowing 35 miles an hour and the water is still calm. We have 23 first class superyacht berths for boats up to 67 metres at the moment, with more planned. There are not that many places where a superyacht can go and safely dock whatever the weather in the Caribbean. I’ve actually had guests on my boat and we’ve been on other islands, not even with the motor running, and it rolls so bad they get sea sick!

The marina is completely state-of-the-art; the latest and greatest in the Caribbean, with all the things you would expect to find in a modern marina: a modern fuel farm with in-slip fuelling, WiFi, black water pumpout, daily refuse collection, 24-hour security with single, controlled access point, concierge services and onsite transportation, as well as VIP clearance for yachts and private aircraft and access to nearby private jet terminal, YU Lounge.

SYT: Where do you see the development of St. Kitts in the foreseeable future?

The next two to three years are probably going to be the most exciting. With the marina done, we have also just completed the largest fuel farm in the Caribbean, so we will be able to fuel up just about any boat. We can do 40,000 gallons a day.

The Park Hyatt hotel will be the only brand new hotel built in the Caribbean in the last 10 years. You’ve got this epicentre of flights coming into the international airport on St. Kitts and that is only going to improve. These flights bring a high quality clientele which fuel restaurants, retail, and investment of other sorts, in both St. Kitts and Nevis, so the next three to five years is going to be very exciting for all of us. I’ve laid the foundation and people can now see the vision.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of experienced yachtsman and legendary Silicone Valley icon Mr. Tom Perkins. Perkins died on on Tuesday night at his home in Marin County, California aged 84.

Perkins was regarded as an icon in the development of the Silicon Valley venture capital industry and indirectly played a key role in the establishment of organisations such as Netscape, Amazon and Google. He became the first Managing Director of Hewlett Packard’s computer divisions in the 1960s and together with Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard nurtured HP into the global IT superpower it has become today.

Perkins’ love for the ocean led him to become a serial yacht owner, with his most high-profile yacht undoubtedly having been the innovative 88 metre Maltese Falcon. Perkin’s forward-thinking outlook pushed the boundaries in the industry and together with Dutch naval architecture firm Dykstra employed the first Dyna Rig design on a superyacht. Other yachts under his ownership included the 1930-built Atlantide, a 1915 classic sailing yacht Mariette, two other Perini Navi sailing yachts namely Paz (then Andromeda la Dea) and Andromeda la Dea as well as the explorer yacht Dr. No.

Original owner of Maltese Falcon, Tom Perkins, passes away

Freedom Marine has sold the 122’ classic motor yacht <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/260">Atlantide</a> belonging to Tom Perkins. Freedom Marine’s David Campbell acted for both the buyer and seller. Campbell first worked with Perkins in the spring of 2011 when he found Perkins the 125’ Expedition Yacht Dr. No. She was purchased to carry his personal submarine. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141402/image/large-1a32bbd3ef6ec5729483078a32f04937.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125197">As an avid yachtsman Perkins has travelled the world with his fleet of super yachts including the 2 x Perini Navi S/Y <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2359">Andromeda la Dea</a>, the 1915 classic 137’ Herreshoff racing schooner <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190">Mariette</a> and his former 289’ <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385">Maltese Falcon</a>; which is perhaps the greatest sailboat ever built. Atlantide was launched in 1930 by Philip and Sons in Dartmouth, UK, this classic 122’ Motor Yacht was originally designed by the gifted English Naval Architect Alfred Mylne (the designer of the original Royal Yacht Britannia) for Sir William Burton. Originally christened as Caleta, Atlantide has a significant history; from her role in evacuating allied troops during WWII to her impressive pedigree of owners. Atlantide’s distinguished owners, yachtsmen similar to Perkins, in their time, have kept her in impeccable condition. Perkins acquired Atlantide in 1998, at which time she underwent a complete rebuild. Her hull was reconstructed at the Manoel Island Shipyard of Malta and the new superstructure and interior was caringly restored and fitted out by Camper and Nicholson only a short distance from where she was originally built by Philip and Sons. Overall external and interior design was undertaken by Ken Freivokh Design. Perkins had brought her back to her original designed purpose as a gentleman's motor yacht and tender to a racing yacht. From 1999 through 2005, Atlantide had the enviable roll as support vessel to her owner’s 1915, 137’ classic Herreshoff racing schooner ‘Mariette’. In 2006, Tom Perkins launched the remarkable 289’ Maltese Falcon. Atlantide and “The Falcon” were show stoppers at every port in which they dropped anchor. On her own, Atlantide also cruised to distant points on the globe including the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Canada's East and West coasts and Norway's high northern latitudes. After many years of enjoyment she is still kept in pristine condition, and this one-of-a-kind motor yacht with an unprecedented history. Atlantide was asking 5,000,000 Euro. Forty-seven yachts will make up the fleet of this year’s St Barths Bucket Regatta, an international regatta that draws yachts and designers from all over the world to the Caribbean, for a fun yet competitive regatta where safety is held supreme. Pendennis Palma first quarter success

Pendennis has recently concluded its busiest refit season in their 23 year history, with six superyachts being finished over the past few weeks. A significant project undertaken was M/Y Audacia with an impressive list of updates completed in just nine weeks. This included comprehensive design improvements including a 2 metre stern extension, reconfigured aft curving staircases and underwater lighting which formed part of the overall restyling by Joanne de Guardiola Design. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/135205/image/large-fc056b2df3b7c9b6324956a399a99884.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/135205">Pendennis undertook the installation of a more modern deck crane to tie into the new aesthetics alongside various system upgrades including replacement of the A/C system and improvements to the stability of the vessel by way of ‘Quantum’ zero speed stabilisers to ensure comfort both at sea and at anchor. Audacia’s first trip following her visit to Cornwall was to the Cannes Film Festival where her new lines and features were greatly admired. Refit work was simultaneously undertaken on the schooner Adela, who was re-launched at the beginning of May. The schedule of works included updating of her furnishings by Pendennis’ interior design team, an engineering overhaul, new generators, paintwork and electrical work. This was also the first time that Adela has had her impressive mainsail replaced since her rebuild at Pendennis in 1992. S/Y Andromeda La Dea arrived at Pendennis in November 2010 for her ABS 20 year survey following which she has also received portions of new teak deck and a full exterior repaint by Pendennis’ experienced in-house paint specialists. This 1990 Perini Navi vessel is currently docked alongside the 37m explorer vessel M/Y Dardanella in Port Pendennis Marina whilst finishing works are undertaken before departure which is scheduled for the end of May. Dardanella’s programme of works included replacement Northern Light generators, a wet room for Bridge Deck to give more flexible pilot berth accommodation, reconfiguration of the Ship’s Office and the addition of a Jacuzzi on the sun deck as well as converting the Owner’s shower to a steam room. The team at Pendennis is well underway on a substantial refit of a 42m Feadship motor yacht, whose details remain under wraps. Also nearing completion is the sailing catamaran Hemisphere, which is due to be unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show in September. Flood up took place in May and Hemisphere’s impressive 53m wing mast is due to be installed following its delivery to the yard this week. M/Y Lady Georgina, M/Y Illusion and S/Y Constance have also paid a short visit providing a total of seven superyachts moored at the marina providing a truly impressive and unique sight in Falmouth Bay. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/135206/image/large-0fc5966be21ad0af9181670de3deb262.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/135206">Naturally Pendennis continues to be involved in more local projects, with short works completed on the iconic 181’ Cornish Chain Ferry, the King Harry Ferry (built by Pendennis in 2006), and a refit of S/Y Carte Blanche after her second winter stay in the yard. Built in 1967 by Nautor’s Swan Carte Blanche is the oldest Swan still to be in use and will now embark on her annual racing season around Falmouth. Pendennis is delighted to announce that the 55m Feadship Illusion has been named as a finalist in the World Superyacht Awards, with the results due to be announced at the ceremony in London at the beginning of May. The extensive winter refit took just over 8 months to complete and included a 3-level 5m LOA stern extension with the addition of a drop-down beach club and enhanced tender garage, thereby substantially enlarging the amount of living space on board.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133910/image/large-ac229cf4708a77bed85f68237f97a0e1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133910">The work also included significant engineering work (including a complete Lloyd’s 5-year survey), deck refurbishment, improvements to the crew quarters and bridge, as well as a dramatic changes to her interior through contemporary restyling of the Owner’s study and ‘sky lounge’ by Bannenberg &amp; Rowell Design.The Owner commented “Pendennis continually exceeded my expectations in terms of their high level of customer service, attention to detail and quality of finish, and final performance of the vessel. The list of structural improvements alongside the more traditional engineering and vessel maintenance tasks provided a considerable amount of work to be completed within one season. My team on the ground were consistently reassured by Pendennis’ professionalism during what could have conceivably been a very stressful experience. Pendennis’ success story continues

At the beginning of November one of Perini Navi’s most iconic sailing yachts arrived at Pendennis for her winter refit. Andromeda La Dea was the first Perini to circumnavigate the globe, and has visited both the Antarctic and the Arctic. With sophisticated and spacious living areas matched with state of the art AV systems, communication and navigation equipment this 47m (154.2ft) vessel is built for entertainment as well as exploring and has done so extensively since she was built in 1990. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133256/image/large-d10b43891af32d2f380b11a0113c9803.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133256"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133257/image/large-52e3a38021210f7a95dae82603a348e4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133257">Of course following her adventures the latest programme of works to be completed at Pendennis includes some cosmetic work: replacement of some teak deck areas and a full exterior re-paint. However, the main purpose of her visit is to undergo a detailed engineering overhaul, including servicing of her tanks, props and shafts, a structural survey and full service of all major systems on board – much of which is necessary for her 20 year ABS survey. The Captain of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2359">Andromeda La Dea</a>, Mac Auwers, has previous experience working alongside Pendennis as he was captain of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/979">Enterprise</a>, a 142.4ft motor sailer also built by Perini Navi, during her refit at the yard in 2003-4. From his time based at Pendennis during this successful and swift refit Mac is aware of the yard’s extensive engineering expertise necessary for completion of the boats’ systems overhaul, due to be completed in April 2011. One of the owners of Andromeda La Dea, Charles Pinckney (Buddy) Darby III, an American entrepreneur currently involved in developing the amazing facilities at Christophe Harbour, St Kitts, was keen to work with the facility in Falmouth: “Pendennis has an impressive portfolio of refits spanning over 20 years, and the reputation for delivering high quality results. Key to the project was the reassurance that Andromeda La Dea would be ready to sail for the 2011 summer charter season. Andromeda la Dea arrives at Pendennis for winter refit

Marine Group Boat Works is currently servicing three Perini Navi sailing yachts: 183-foot S/Y Rosehearty, 173-foot S/Y Tamsen and 158-foot S/Y Morning Glory. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129206/image/large-d652eb45e87e027f418cf1df7e638c4b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129206">One of the few white Perini Navis in the world, S /Y Rosehearty at 183 feet, is getting some paint touch ups, structural work, underwater hull paint, shell door and passerelle service and other minor repairs. Upon completion, S/Y Rosehearty will dock at Fifth Avenue Landing in downtown before making her way to warmer waters. S/Y Tamsen, at 173-feet, is on her second visit to Marine Group Boat Works where she’s getting minor mechanical repairs, underwater hull paint and miscellaneous paint repairs. Last but not least, after navigating the globe for over 10 years, 158-foot S/Y Morning Glory is being restored to her original, pristine condition. This large scale project includes repowering and rebuilding the main engines, installing brand new generators, re-plumbing, laying down new teakwood floors and decks, re-rigging the masts and full custom paint. The arrival of S/Y Rosehearty, S/Y Tamsen and S/Y Morning Glory will mark Marine Group Boat Works’ fourth Perini Navi project. Three Perini Navi superyachts under service at Marine Group Boat Works

Saturday dawned with the strong breeze of the previous day blowing across the Costa Smeralda unabated. Upwards of 35 knots were recorded off Porto Cervo, causing the YCCS race committee to announce a postponement for the start of Sundays' racing in the Perini Navi Cup. But after one hour, it was clear from the conditions and the forecast that the winds would not diminish soon enough to get racing in. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128880/image/large-33b40e403ca5cc09a6750b4435f80855.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128880">At a brief skippers' meeting, the YCCS Principal Race Officer, Peter Craig and the race organizers consulted with the yacht owners and made the decision to cancel racing for the day. I suppose twenty years ago I would've been upset and unhappy, but it's amazing now when you turn sixty, something happens, so it's like 'very good decision race committee'". <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128883/image/large-67907b441ccab2ed38a01bbb8a3c11f2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128883">Friday's conditions tested boats and crews, but when it was all said and done, the racing was great and there were relatively few breakdowns. Holland said, "Yesterday was extreme, that really was the limit. What I reflected on was that these large cruising yacht regattas are a relatively new thing, starting about 15 years ago. But the boats have kept getting bigger. The standard of sailing that we witnessed yesterday was certainly of a higher order than the first Perini Cup; the boats are being handled more accurately, the level of experience of the crews are higher. On Salute, we had the owner of the yacht steering the boat very well for the whole day, so it's another level of what Perini yachts are all about..it's really extreme in those conditions, you have to sail extra carefully, you have to know the limits of the boat, so this was a hell of a test for the fleet." <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128884/image/large-e1c946f3eb5926b48f99cd04ddcd646d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128884">Holland knows what he speaks of - his first design with Perini was the 210' ketch <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/141">Felicita West</a>, and more recently he has designed the 56-meter series, the first aluminum boat from Perini, of which ten have been sold. Of the appeal of this design he offered, "It opened up another segment of the market -- Perini had a great reputation and success in the large cruising yacht market, with the style and comfort, but they didn't have the performance aspect to the boats. My collaboration added to the performance possibilities. It also said you can have comfort, style, and safety without giving up so much performance, so it can still be a proper, fun sailboat." <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128885/image/large-a4fdc7b51d2d0154fae8a46d76e114ae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128885">In Porto Cervo, two of these boats <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39">Salute</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1387">Riela</a>, were competing. Holland commented on the improvements in technology and manufacturing in super yachts, "In the early days, you probably couldn't have pulled the jibs in on the winches, because the winches weren't strong enough ten years ago! Yesterday when we were sailing up to the finish line with three or four boats that we had a chance of overtaking, we said 'let's pull the jib in just a little more'. High winds cancel final race day of Perini Navi Cup

What's better than champagne sailing? Well if you're one of the select few sailing in the Perini Navi Cup off the Costa Smeralda, it was certainly more like Bellini sailing - 30+ knots from the west which provided spectacular conditions for the 18-boat fleet. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128859/image/large-3244ed293eff0d461e13ccc437a18785.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128859">Racing started pursuit style with the smallest yacht in the fleet, Elettra starting first at 1205; thereafter the yachts started every two minutes, with the last yacht off the line, the 184-foot sloop-rigged <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39">Salute</a>. The YCCS race committee sent the fleet on a 25 nautical mile course that featured mostly reaching: from the start off Porto Cervo, it was a beat up to Monaci island, once around a reach down to the rocky islet of Mortoriotto, then back on the wind again, though almost a fetch to the finish off the entrance to Porto Cervo. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128860/image/large-5ab109250441cca2d65f82b9c5db91c8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128860"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128861/image/large-ff6fe2d7389371d01cf2779c4fd3056e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128861">While the pursuit start sent the boats on a bit of a parade up to Monaci, once around the reach to the leeward mark saw the fleet compress, making for an exciting leeward mark rounding at Motoriotto. On board <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2088">Perseus</a>, Bill Lynn, a guest helmsmen, reveled in the conditions, saying "We saw 40 knots a little while before the start, but it was great -- these boats handle just fine in that much wind, you just make the sails a little smaller and tell people to hang on a little tighter, and off you go. It's a totally different beast to sail, everything happens that much slower, but then you get down to that leeward turning mark and there's eight boats in a pretty small patch of water with rocks to the right, and rocks to the left, and you start getting a little nervous." <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128862/image/large-8e90aab609efc44b36418e97b785073b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128862"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128863/image/large-6afad18d71053499c57febffcda1a2e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128863">The fresh conditions took their toll with some breakages. On <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2088">Perseus</a>, the port mainsheet winch failed, preventing the crew from trimming the main on most of the last beat, but they managed with a jury-rig and will work to rebuild the winch for tomorrows race. While Perinis are massive yachts, under cruising conditions they don't require a large number of crew to sail. But in racing mode, the crew numbers easily grow to 25 or so. Lynn explained, "We have the regular crew, the race crew which is about six or seven of us, guys that are here to race the boat, the owner and five or six of his friends, and a few other guests -- I'm not sure if they snuck on.I never saw them before!" <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128864/image/large-8bfd80c85e11f19b57fe494e3cde48e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128864">Even a sailmaker can venture a huge smile after a spirited day of racing in big breeze on big yachts, such as the 174-foot <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/192">Atmosphere</a>. Robbie Doyle, had first sailed Perinis years ago onboard <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2359">Andromedea La Dea</a>, and in the 2006 Perini Navi Cup on <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385">Maltese Falcon</a> -- but he had never sailed the yachts in the strong conditions of today. Doyle said, "It was a testament to Perini that the boats all held together as well as they did. To sail in 30-35 knots and have as little damage done, well it's big change from five to ten years ago. In general, super yachts when they go racing, you sheet everything in that much harder, and that's when you break things. They've really resolved these systems very well." <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128865/image/large-b3c8e301202f40d2fdaab31a4f8885e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128865">Doyle had high praise for the crew, "The owners son drove, he's a tremendous sailor -- a Melges 24 champion, so it's a little different sailing this boat, but he did an excellent job. But we were grateful we didn't have to put a spinnaker up today, since we haven't practiced it. The 164-foot ketch <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/42">Baracuda</a> stood out with their dark carbon hull and lavender-colored sails a striking sight against the emerald water. Former America's Cup skipper Mauro Pelaschier helmsman onboard, said, "We sailed three days before the race, but in very light winds, so it was very exciting today, but difficult too as it's not easy to trim the sails in the strong breeze." <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128866/image/large-bb865ade3825bed87fca46c5c3edfe49.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128866"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128867/image/large-1bce6dc3450436228068d79262d8ba18.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128867"><a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/42">Baracuda</a> was one of the last to start, and was several minutes late at that when another yacht crossed their anchor delaying their arrival on the race course. But they gained around the course and had a strong last beat, Pelaschier said, "We're training the crew, they're doing a great job.
