Lessons Learned: Building Royal Huisman's 65m Aquarius II

Whether industry aficionado, or enthusiastic bystander, the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> needs no introduction. World renowned for the construction of record breaking super sailing and motor yachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has built an international reputation on the quality of its vessels. But such excellence doesn’t happen overnight. Founded in 1884 and born from a family heritage of wooden boat building, the story of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>’s evolution to award-winning superyacht builder is an extraordinary one. Now celebrating its 140th anniversary, we took a look at some of the shipyard’s most notable milestones, to understand how this historic business has become a symbol of the international perception of Dutch quality, and its vision for the future. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302158/image/large-8e81484e61254715d5e713565d776d34.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302158">A Historic Legacy&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> officially dates its history back to the foundation of a boatyard in Ronduite, the Netherlands in 1884, beginning the familial legacy of boat building, initially with the construction of small wooden work and fishing boats. Situated close to the turbulent Zuiderzee (the inland sea to the north east of Amsterdam which is now the freshwater IJsselmeer), the Huisman’s boat building business was a key part of local life, but as the local fishing industry dwindled, so did the need for the Huisman boats. It was Jan Huisman, alongside his brother Jacob, that eventually made the decision to focus the yard’s energy’s on wooden sailing yachts and by the 1950s, the shipyard had begun to build its reputation on the construction of steel and aluminium vessels. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303052/image/large-40c16173cfd96905e8b99f9eb87e780c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303052">A pioneer from its earliest origins, the advent of aluminium in the 1960s was a turning point for the yard which innovated with the bending and welding of aluminium for hull construction. By the 1970s, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Huisman</a> had moved to its current location in Vollenhove where deeper water access and space heralded the growth of both the company and its yachts. In 1984, on its 100th anniversary, the shipyard was awarded its Royal warrant in recognition of good behaviour including tax paying and the quality of its work, recognising its now international track record for the construction of both large racing yachts and performance cruising yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302159/image/large-3f87873567cd17e9ed98d3e72adf31cd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302159">Now credited with the construction of nearly 200 unique vessels from eight to 90-metres, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has become one of the most productive bespoke builders in the world, and its existing fleet of more than 45 superyachts represents 140 years of knowledge passed down from generation to generation. Most recently, the shipyard developed Featherlight, which utilises a high-grade mix between aluminium and carbon within its hulls and offers weight reductions of up-to 15 percent. Pioneered aboard the recently delivered <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10110" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nilaya46.8m (153'7&quot;)Royal Huisman2023">Nilaya</a> and used within the construction of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Project 40652.0m (170'7&quot;)Royal Huisman2024">Project 408</a>, Featherlight rethinks and reduces the use of materials combining the low noise levels offered by aluminium. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296422/image/large-ce4f57a16cf9ae0f7a2492cf9d58bbdd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296422">Not only is the Featherlight method a unique offering within the sector, it has also produced a result that is competitive with carbon composite racing yachts, an unparalleled result for aluminium construction. Regatta performance, though often an aim, is not the only motivator behind the shipyard’s innovation efforts. With less power needed for motoring, the team was able to develop a new ‘tribrid’ propulsion system providing three power options with a battery bank allowing for silent operation. This system, smaller than conventional engines, had the additional benefit of leaving more space for interior accommodation. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303047/image/large-316d6b3995c2872a52f179e8c20d7928.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303047">While Featherlight has been a step into the future, Project 410, New World Sloop, is set to break the wheel when it comes to her green technology. Project Med takes inspiration from a study by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> that reduces the need for watertight bulkheads, the main engineering limitation when defining an interior arrangement. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/283" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luiz de Basto Designs (Company)">De Basto</a>’s open architectural concept is the result of looking at the rules “in a slightly different way.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303785/image/large-f92a8c4b9a6c33e62c6c0968f0203297.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303785">Amidst all the talk of alternative fuels and greenhouse gases, the carbon footprint of the facilities building the yachts has usually taken a back seat. Not anymore. We look at how shipyards are switching on to the need to implement more comprehensive sustainability solutions in their business practices – and the operational and financial benefits that can be enjoyed as a result.But for me the most rewarding assignment was a trip to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7016" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Teignbridge Propellers (Company)">Teignbridge Propellers</a> in deepest Devon. I thought I knew something about stern gear, but quickly realised I was almost entirely ignorant of how propellers are designed and manufactured. After being introduced to a fascinating process that combines the latest CNC technology with old-fashioned human labour, I learned why propellers sometimes ‘sing’, what ‘fettling’ is, and why the moulds for casting are made one blade at a time using ‘patterns’. Royal Huisman turns the hull of 65m sailing yacht Aquarius II

Royal Huisman has announced the turning of Aquarius II at their shipyard in Vollenhove.

While sailing yachts once dominated the world’s oceans, since the advent of the first motor yachts they have consisted of a shrinking portion of the world's superyacht fleet. In recent years, however, the tide has begun to turn. With questions of “sustainability” and “eco-efficiency” abuzz across the industry, some yacht owners are weighing up their options and sailing yachts are garnering more interest.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/51196/image/large-9d5c7f67c60baacba8126df54f1600d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/51196">One shipyard that is synonymous with sailing yacht expertise is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>, which puts forward a powerhouse triple threat: the new-build facility of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> Vollenhove, Huisfit refit facility in Amsterdam and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. One thing that unequivocally unifies <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> projects, both sail and motor, is the uniqueness of each yacht. Currently under construction is Project 404, a 59.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4373" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design (Company)">Malcolm McKeon</a> high-performance sloop with a retractable keel; Project 405, a 46.82-metre performance-cruiser sloop by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/521" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reichel / Pugh Yacht Design (Company)">Reichel / Pugh</a> that has pioneered the new “Featherlight” hull concept (more on that later); Project 406, a 52-metre sportfisher that will be the largest in the world; Project 407 is the rebuild of the 1930s motor sailor <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/260" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantide37.28m (122'4&quot;)Philip & Sons1930">Atlantide</a>; Project 408, the 65m Ketch Aquarius II, and finally Project 410 – the 85m New World Sloop from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6718" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Frers Design (Company)">Frers Design</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/174198/image/large-26290b9dcb7f698279e5f91ab1870d66.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/174198">InnovationEach of these projects offers a unique solution to the owner’s specifications and Project 405 is a case in point for how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> is primed to delve into its knowledge and create something special. The owners of 405 came to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> looking for a light, strong but fast performance-cruiser that could stand her ground in regattas, but also offers a comfortable and homely interior for her guests. Rather than compromising on outfitting materials, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/521" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reichel / Pugh Yacht Design (Company)">Reichel / Pugh</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta</a> worked together with the shipyard team to pioneer a new hull construction method, known as Featherlight – a high-grade mix between aluminium and carbon.&nbsp;Offering a reduction of up to 11 percent for the structural weight, whilst maintaining the stiffness and structural integrity of the hull, Featherlight combines the strength of carbon and the stability and low noise levels offered by aluminium. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> team is quite happy with the final product, which took sixteen iterations to perfect, and we can expect to see the Featherlight form, and versions of it, on many future sailing and motoryacht projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223059/image/large-d4a89d221fd746b61d75c72e515b9f52.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223059">While Featherlight has been one recent innovation, it doesn’t stop there. As we walked through the shipyard’s various construction and assembly halls, the interior cabinetry and furniture of various vessels were being crafted and assembled in full-size mockups to ensure the absolute accuracy of the design. Visible between the layers of wooden panelling is a central section of aluminium grating that, like the Featherlight hull, enhances the stiffness of the yacht and adds additional stability to the vessel while also lightening the interior structures.It's impossible to mention unique innovations without touching on Project 406, the custom 52-metre sportfisher. The hull is now in an advanced stage of construction and standing above her, one really gets a sense of how she has been inspired by the sailing yachts the yard is famed for. A sleek hull and graceful sweeping profile line, the yacht’s owner's team visited Royal Huisman during the construction of PHI and it was that experience that won them over to the shipyard. The transition between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a> is so fluid in fact that you are unaware when you move from one to the other, creating a sense of absolute unity. Arranged in this way, the team has direct access to each of the projects and can move between them, collaborating with colleagues and ensuring standardisation of quality control. According to the team here it is that same heritage that enables the yard to straddle the gap between traditional and modernity and to execute both sectors to the same impeccable standard. She even features a walk-in beach club, something we are familiar with from 40-metre-plus motor yachts but certainly not many sailing yachts.Project 405 is both a floating home and a formidable competitor. She features a retractable keel offering a shallow draft and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. According to the Amsterdam based shipyard, the project is set to be a ‘revolutionary’ step into the future for superyachts. Wherever possible, Project 410 will use recycled materials or simple low-impact materials that will be crafted to create exceptional effects. The Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has announced a new order for a 65-metre performance ketch Project 408, designed in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4404" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Whiteley Design (Company)">Mark Whiteley Design</a>.
