Her length increased by 25-metres during the design process. Collaborating closely with the owner, we crafted the exterior design to be meticulously shaped for both aesthetics and functionality," remarks Onne. Famed for its expertise in yacht building, with yachts such as the 85.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Aquila</a> under its belt, as well as its knowledge for refit, maintenance and yacht repair, the company has built a reputation of excellence over the decades.Having grown from its original yard in New York, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Derecktor Shipyards</a> now span the East Coast with four major facilities. We spoke with Justin Beard, Marketing and Sales Development Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Derecktor</a>, to find out a little more about this titan of American yachting. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251765/image/large-20e7c52020c060c2309484b9b543e89a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251765">What were the origins of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor Shipyards</a>&nbsp;and how has it continued after Bob Derecktor?When Bob was in high school, sometime during the 1930s, he designed a 26-foot sloop and built it in his family’s backyard in White Plains, New York – using oak for the frames, fir for the deck and pine for the mast. With the help of a friend, he sailed it to Nova Scotia for the summer.After a couple of years, Bob left college to focus on his passion. He built a 38-foot schooner and sailed it from New York to Baltimore, where he took a job at the Owens Boatyard, advancing quickly through the ranks to become foreman. Eventually returning to the New York area, he worked at the Edgar Johns Shipyard in Rye and Minnefords in City Island, building minesweepers designed to detonate underwater mines during World War II. Bob soon joined the effort himself, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s.&nbsp;During 1947, shortly after returning from the Navy, the young boatbuilder established Robert E. Derecktor, Inc. on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, New York. Surrounding himself with talented employees who would continue to grow along with the company, over the years he expanded the yard, following the ebbs and flows of the boatbuilding business — transitioning from wood to aluminium, from cruising boats to race boats, from sail to power, then to larger yachts and commercial boats.Today, four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor</a>’s facilities span the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. from Maine to South Florida, offering vessel owners and operators everything from marina space to superyacht construction. Paul Derecktor, President and CEO, works alongside our executive team setting our course for the future, while other business functions like business development, marketing, sales, accounting and purchasing are all centrally managed.The New York yard is a repair and refit hub for the region’s commercial fleet, along with power and sailing yachts under 40 metres. SuperYacht Times’ in-house yacht historian Malcolm Wood remembers the largest yachts built in the United States over the last two centuries;Following the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show - 2019">FLIBS event last month</a>, I thought it would be a good time to take a brief look at the largest yachts constructed in the USA from the 19th century to the modern era of the superyacht. It is important not to forget that the advent of satellite communications in the 1970s signalled the emergence of the modern superyacht market as we know it today.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101042/image/large-564ad09d952dcb620697fb8bb5865bc4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101042"> Although production of large yachts (150 feet, or 45.72 metres, and over) in the USA commenced with the launch of the 84.1-metre North Star&nbsp;steam yacht built by Simonson, (Greenport, NY) in 1852 and followed by the 76.2-metre Voyageur de la Mer by Holden &amp; Gallagher (East Boston, MA) in 1858, it was not until the 1880s that we saw an increase in the numbers delivered. &nbsp;Let’s take a look at some basic statistics before we go further.The number of yachts of 150 ft (45.72 metres) and over delivered in the period 1850 to 1899 was 62 units and from 1900 to 1939 it was 112 units. It was during the period of World War I and following the Wall Street Crash in 1929 until the start of World War II in 1939 that the numbers of large yachts delivered decreased significantly.&nbsp;In the post-war period from 1945 to 1980, only a handful of vessels were completed including a number of World War II conversions of former naval craft. However, from 1980 until the end of the 20th century, there was the start of an upturn in numbers with the establishment of several new yards. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/105208/image/large-10175fddb7c8234e0e4f25c96ebed3ac.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/105208">Turning now to the all-time largest American yachts: 10. &nbsp; &nbsp;Viking&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; 1929 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;82.9m &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Newport News SBBuilt for George F. Baker Jr as the first turbo-electric powered yacht. She later came under the ownership of Norman B. Woolworth as Noparo but became a war loss in 1944. 9. &nbsp; &nbsp;North Star&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;1852 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;84.1m &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;SimonsonBuilt for Cornelius Vanderbilt, North Star&nbsp;was the first very large yacht built in the USA. Converted to a passenger vessel in 1854. She was renamed Three Brothers&nbsp;in 1866 and later became a coal hulk at New London, Connecticut. 8. &nbsp; &nbsp;Caroline II&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;1931 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;85.0m &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/900" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bath Iron Works (Company)">Bath Iron Works</a>Built for Eldridge H. Johnson as the second vessel of this name, the first was a 52.1-metre constructed by Lawley in 1926. Cadwalader Jr. as the third vessel of this name. She was later named Alder and converted to a banana carrier in 1953. She became a total loss in 1961 after springing a leak. 3. &nbsp; &nbsp;Aphrodite&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;1898 &nbsp; &nbsp;92.2m &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/900" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bath Iron Works (Company)">&nbsp;Bath Iron Works</a>Built for Colonel Oliver H. Overlooking the city of Cape Town in Western Cape, South Africa, Table Mountain is one of the foremost and most famous tourist attractions found in the region, with thousands of visitors from all around the world flocking to the area to reach its summit via cableway or on foot. As well as the large array of flora and fauna which can be found as you make your ascent, the most distinctive aspect of a trip up Table Mountain is evident upon finally reaching the summit: the flat top which gives the landmark its name. &nbsp;Our next interview subject does not hail from Cape Town, or even call South Africa his home, but finds this South-African landmark to be an excellent analogy for describing his career in the superyacht industry so far. As he explains, “It’s not the highest mountain in the world, but you get up there and don’t come down again. You can just keep walking along the top and that’s what we’ve been able to do for a long time thanks to a string of really wonderful clients who have given us the opportunity to design boats for them.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/100870/image/large-96d2855e19a1abbdad57555661e8d6b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100870">And what remarkable boats these are. (Company)">Tim Heywood Design</a> over the past few decades have included the seventh-largest superyacht currently in operation, the 147-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3962" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A+147.25m (483'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2012">A+</a> (previously known as Topaz), the iconic 115-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Pelorus</a> - launched by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> in 2003 - one of the most luxurious <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> vessels ever to grace the water, the 101.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3765" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Symphony101.5m (333'0&quot;)Feadship2015">Symphony</a>, the largest new-build boat to be built in the US to date, the 85.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Aquila</a> from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor Shipyards</a> (known as Cakewalk at the time of her 2010-launch), and many, many more. Of course, size isn’t everything for the British designer who first entered the industry under the wing of the late, great Jon Bannenberg, but it does show us something. Namely, that over a career spanning four decades, Tim Heywood has won himself something which isn’t easy to come by: the trust of some of the world’s most influential and private people to create extraordinary - and extremely private - floating homes for them. Plus, as the affable designer hints at throughout our conversation, these clients often end up coming back for more. <img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/78005/image/large-68ce5d748a1e9b1dc7a0e14a5a978090.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/78005">“We’ve done some remarkable work over the years, and I do sometimes have to pinch myself when I look back.” Looking back is not something that the designer likes to do often, preferring to keep his attention focused firmly on the next exterior design project (or five). Allowing ourselves the liberty to look back, how did Heywood get to where I see him today, moving between his tranquil and beautifully laid-out studio space annexe and the elegant country house he shares with his business partner and now wife, Vanessa on the outskirts of Headley in Hampshire, England?&nbsp;With a background in industrial design engineering, Heywood is the first to admit that his initial meeting with Mr Bannenberg had something fortuitous about it. “I approached another company who I thought were looking for an illustrator and they said that they were terribly sorry, but they weren’t looking any more. A friend of theirs was looking for someone though: a guy called Jon in Chelsea who did yacht design. So I rang them up and they said come by tomorrow and I thought, ‘I’d better draw some yachts.’ I worked through the whole night drawing my first ever yachts and the longest one I drew was about 18 feet long. I really had no idea about big yachts - and I came in and got offered the job starting the next day.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/5867/image/large-e0073473eec322b5ecf995161a7f8d72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/5867">Once given the chance, it didn’t take long for Heywood to earn his stripes with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a>, visiting shipyards all around the world and relishing the opportunities it brought him.&nbsp;“I loved every minute of being in a shipyard and the effect of seeing what I’d drawn actually appear on the slipway. It’s a truly wonderful thing to stand on the quay and wave goodbye to them and off they go around the world.”&nbsp;Quick to attribute much of his early success to the influence of the English-Australian yacht designer who&nbsp;“created the yacht design industry”, as Heywood sees it, Heywood moved from being a&nbsp;“kind of jobbing designer, doing everything and anything Jon wanted me to do”, to a designer in his own right, conducting client meetings, assembling contracts and running the complete project himself (with Bannenberg looking over his shoulder from time to time). By 1996, however, it was time for a change. Bannenberg had decided to become part-owner of an Australian shipyard in a move which Heywood was certain could only be detrimental to his relationships with European shipyards. For Heywood, it was the perfect opportunity to break off and make his own luck and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood Designs</a> was born, together with the help and guiding hands of co-director Vanessa, his partner, constant supporter and encouraging influencer.<img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/93577/image/large-719c165ade67a041abdf668315b8b972.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/93577">It wasn’t only the company car and computer which Heywood was allowed to keep when he left <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a>. “I was working on&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limitless96.25m (315'9&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1997">Limitless</a>&nbsp;at the time and Jon said, ‘I’ll pay you a fee, but I want you to maintain control over&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limitless96.25m (315'9&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1997">Limitless</a>&nbsp;and complete her. I was obviously very pleased and carried it on with him, and then the shipyard took me on to do the wheelhouse and crew accommodation and that cemented my relationship with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>.” Since going solo back in 1996, Heywood has decided to keep it that way, offering me a wry smile when he describes receiving emails from ill-informed internship hopefuls keen to demonstrate their enthusiasm to join the ‘<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood Design</a> team’. Heywood’s characteristically kind solution to this predicament is to direct their attention towards larger superyacht design outfits such as his long-time working associates, and former colleagues at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a>’s studio, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Terence Disdale Design (Company)">Terence Disdale</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Andrew Winch</a> in London where they might have better luck. &nbsp;Working as this team of two, with partner Vanessa, represents the perfect set-up for Heywood as it allows him to concentrate on what he loves the most: the actual nitty-gritty work of design. “I get to do all the design work, and that is what I love: be it a 140-metre piece of sculpture, a bollard or a stainless-steel door handle which is going to be on the exterior door of this wonderful yacht.” Speaking of bollards, it is when he is describing a bollard design he devised for the 115-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Pelorus</a> that Heywood’s excitement for his vocation shines through. “I was looking at the bollard design and thinking ‘it’s a bollard, a bit like other bollards, but could I put a piece of teak decking in the top?’ I asked&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>&nbsp;and they said, ‘Ah, we will speak to the stainless steel manufacturers and see what it possible’ and they eventually came back and said, yes they could make a recess. A lot of my yachts since then have had a teak top to the bollard, which looks great, plus you can sit on it, even when it’s been in the sun as it’s nowhere near as hot as sitting on stainless steel. Little details like that - I get such a big kick out of them.”<img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/100113/image/large-c05992f1973329e9da397b620f18e6e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100113">And then there’s the deck columns: “When you go on a lot of boats, you will see a 120mm diameter pipe which is holding up the deck column, but if you go on my boats, you don’t see that, you’ll see an arching piece of aluminium, beautifully finished and clad with teak or painted bronze with lights built in. I feel that every detail on a yacht should have design time and effort invested in it.” Easy as it is to become absorbed in listening to Heywood waxing lyrical about these design details, it is the sum of their parts that has won him his extraordinary reputation. His sleek and ‘athletically feminine’ lines are somewhat of a trademark of his work, although not something he feels in any way limited by. This is evidenced by the 62.4-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> Limited Edition 199 superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Event62.4m (204'9&quot;)Amels2013">Event</a> delivered in 2013 which displays these feminine “sculpted curves” alongside more militaristic and faceted aspects (a kind of “origami effect” as Heywood describes it). For the British designer, it is the ability to create massive forms and shapes through his creations which has kept him primarily focused on exterior rather than interior design, especially in the latter part of his career - although his highly industrious personality also comes into play. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/93587/image/large-fe745cab7117b17d62f19f81bb9df4b6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/93587">“I love the grander scale, but as the projects got bigger and bigger, I realised that the interior takes as much time, maybe even more time, as the exterior. I thought, if I just do the exteriors, I can do maybe three boats simultaneously, if I do the interior, I can only do one in that time. I don’t want to undertake a complete interior again. Let the usual suspects of our interior design get on with it! I’ve worked with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Terence Disdale Design (Company)">Terence Disdale</a>&nbsp;on 4-5 boats and likewise, I’ve worked with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Andrew Winch</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/88" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laura Sessa Romboli (Company)">Laura Sessa</a>&nbsp; - there are probably seven interior design companies that have had work on our projects. It’s nice that we’ve given out so much work - let’s keep these guys busy!”One of the most significant collaborations in Heywood’s career was when he designed a whole range of yachts for Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a>, the Limited Editions range, including the popular 55-metre LE180 which has sold more than 24 units since its inception in 2011. This represented an interesting test for the designer. “The larger the boat is, the easier it is to make it elegant, but I liked the challenge of trying to apply the design formulas I’ve created to smaller boats. You put as much design effort into the first yacht of the series as you would with an individual design because that’s what it is: an individual design."<img src="/uploads/store/photo/61331/image/large-f629339aa4cc79f0e35bb89d7db975a8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/61331">In any case, whether it is the fifteenth boat in a series for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> or a fully-confidential one-off custom 100m+ project, it is his profound understanding of the clients for whom he is designing that has kept Heywood at the peak of the design business for the last 40 years and ensured his longevity within the industry. Heywood quite frequently finds himself in that rare club of those invited back onto superyachts following their completion: an invitation that he may politely decline. “These boats that I’m involved in are people’s homes. You can live on a yacht and run your business and if you don’t tell people where you are, they won’t know. One of the things that drives this industry is providing privacy for these people. I went on a boat in a shipyard recently that was nearly completed and the captain asked me, ‘Would you like to see the inside?’ And I said, ‘No, you’ve got a beautiful exterior which is my design, and I am very pleased with that, but that is enough’. If the clients wish me to come and have a look around, I’d be happy to, but these are people’s private homes. This means I’ve still not seen the interiors of some of my yachts!”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/93582/image/large-b4636ed39a0242f9dc20b0168a404d47.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/93582">Indeed, this consideration for the needs of his clients goes right to the core of Heywood’s design philosophy and carries with it a refreshing pragmatism. “I’ve always tried to produce work that I feel pushes the envelope a little bit but doesn’t go wacky, Vanessa’s opinion is a great stabilising factor! For the client who invests a lot of time, effort and a substantial amount of money into these boats, they know that if they have a Tim Heywood designed boat, they will recoup the money they spent later on.”&nbsp;This approach does not mean, however, that Heywood suffers from any shortage of tantalising design ideas. What is the most challenging superyacht project which he has not yet been able to build? “It was a 140-metre which had an exterior covered in faceted glass. I went to see a repeat client with five sketches to see which direction to go in and this was one of them, and he liked it. I was surprised and I started developing it. It was something totally unique and different but then he decided not to proceed with the project yet. Yet. So we’ll see!” Appropriately vague for a designer who values client confidentiality so highly, Heywood has a “couple of projects” with which he is currently involved, as well as&nbsp;“a nice little project in Germany which isn’t a yacht.” But whenever it is that we see the next instantly-recognisable <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. Inside, outside or underwater, onboard lighting sets the mood, enhances our perception of space and can even become a work of art itself. In short, it is an integral part of yacht design that contributes to the overall aesthetics by marrying functional needs with materials and finishes to bring a custom project to life.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45934/image/large-d032c14ecb546d03828f4b624ba4f9e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45934">“As yacht designers, we strive to create an emotional and architectural experience, which can only be improved with good lighting design,” says Ben Harrison of Harrison Eidsgaard in London. “You could say that light – its colour, intensity and distribution – is the basis of everything we do.”This hasn’t always been the case. It wasn’t long ago that lighting on yachts was strictly functional. Limited by profit margins and technical platforms, boat builders relied on generic solutions and were generally slow to embrace innovation. To some extent this was understandable: the vibration, saline environment and limited space for wiring aboard yachts meant conventional solutions were favoured over new but possibly unreliable technologies.“Every stakeholder appreciates the added value of good lighting design, but in the past it was usually delegated to the shipyards and the installation was very much driven by the budget,”&nbsp;says Claudio Zimarino, advisor for the London-based firm John Cullen Lighting that has developed lighting solutions for superyachts such as Feadship’s 70-metre Joy, Derecktor’s 85.6-metre Aquila and Royal Huisman’s 57.49-metre Twizzle. “It’s only fairly recently that we’ve seen more attention being paid to lighting by enlightened players.”The big change came with advances in Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology and the push to phase out energy-gobbling halogen bulbs. In the early years, LEDs were expensive, difficult to dim and gave out a harsh blue light, but there was no denying that their small size, low heat emission and long life made them ideal for yachts. Interior and exterior lighting was quickly transformed by using LEDs for accent, ambient and task lighting. The strip lighting beneath furniture units that lends them a ‘floating’ look – an effect that now appears on almost every yacht regardless of size – would be virtually impossible to achieve with other light sources.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45937/image/large-c36a731000e1f5b7bba888b01993d2bc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45937">Chips with everything Recent improvements in the high-tech manufacturing of LED chips have led to further gains in the quality and consistency of light they emit. Today’s high-power LEDs can be smaller than a grain of rice and render colours that are very close to natural light. This is an important consideration for any illumination project, but especially in the retail sector. In fact, Luce5 Yachting in Viareggio was set up so that yacht builders could benefit from the company’s experience working with high-end retail clients such as Prada, Bulgari, Fendi, Boucheron, Zanotti and Zegna. In the two years since the new division was founded, it has collaborated with Benetti on multiple new-builds, including two 100+ metre superyachts due to launch in 2019, and signed off two refit projects with the ‘relamping’ of Benetti’s 52-metre Falcon (ex-Sai Ram) and Oceanco’s 85.5-metre Sunrays.&nbsp;“We started working with Prada because their famous handbags were showing up as different shades of red under different LEDs, sometimes in the same store,” says Riccardo Di Bene, Managing Director of Luce5 Yachting. “The same thing can happen on a yacht: if you don’t use the best quality LEDs, your carefully selected walnut veneer can end up looking like cherry wood. The ultimate goal is to develop lighting solutions that are perfectly harmonised with the interior and exterior furnishings, decor and ambience.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45932/image/large-0e890018420f24b9d094c899f05cc118.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45932">Techorate&nbsp;your space Miniaturisation and gains in performance of LEDs have led to new applications that were unrealisable a decade or so ago. Super-bright, electroluminescent LED sheets are now available that can be flexed into fluid, organic shapes. When combined with a reflector and laser-machined diffuser, they offer perfectly uniform brightness across the panel for backlighting marble and onyx, or creating ‘skylight’ panels calibrated to resemble diffuse daylight. Even wood veneers can be backlit and LEDs are being used to add sparkle to micro-perforated leather, providing ambient illumination while accentuating the natural properties of materials. These advances have given birth to a new expression – techorating – to describe the fusion of technology and decorating.Of course, LEDs have also impacted the exterior lighting of yachts. Instead of lighting up the whole superstructure like a fairground attraction, here the trend is towards more selective, indirect illumination. By way of example, Ben Harrison points to M/Y Irisha, the 51-metre Heesen delivered to her owner earlier this year:&nbsp;“Irisha has a very distinctive glass arch over the wheelhouse and we chose to accentuate this signature feature at night with LED strip lighting,” he explains. “We intentionally did not do the same on the deck below, because we would have ended up with that scatter-gun speckling of lights that we’re trying to move away from.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45936/image/large-24f5b4b478820e3833781f290cfa3c63.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45936">Lighting in a digital world Technology has revolutionised the light sources themselves, but also redefined the design process and introduced new tools for personalising the lighting design. Pre-set lighting scenarios, controlled by a handheld tablet or smartphone according to the occasion or time of day, are now fully integrated into the domotic networks aboard yachts. This requires a dozen or more different loops for adjusting the lights in each room, which further involves a lot of complex circuitry that has to be defined ahead of time (the final programming of each loop is often the last job of the designer before delivery of the yacht). This painstaking process is being superseded with LEDs that can be individually controlled using a Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI), a network-based system whereby each light is assigned a specific code. This represents a huge step forward for designers and shipyards alike, who no longer have to decide which lights have to be wired into which loop during the design phase.&nbsp;What’s next? The Internet of Things (the concept of connecting any device to the internet, including cell phones, wearable devices and products such as coffeemakers. An extensive network of connected ‘things’) is becoming a reality and part of this process is Li-Fi, a form of wireless communication using light that is 100 times faster than average Wi-Fi speeds. Because LEDs are semiconductors that can modulate current and output rapidly, they are ideal for implementing Li-Fi. The drawback is that Li-Fi is short range, although in terms of security this is arguably an advantage on yachts: to hack into the Li-Fi network, you would have to stand very near a light source to do so. Innovations like this promise undeniable benefits, but the rapid advance of digital technology brings with it unforeseeable challenges:“A custom superyacht takes around three years to build, so what we specify today may be old by the time the yacht is delivered,” says Claudio Zimarino. “This means we have to constantly stay on top of the latest developments in lighting technology, fixtures, drivers and control systems. The winners at the World Superyacht Awards

An 18-month refit project of the motor yacht known formerly as Cakewalk has transformed the American-built 85.6-metre yacht Aquila into a contemporary masterpiece with a new interior that is nearly unrecognisable from her previous design. The judges of the 2017 World Superyacht Awards, hosted by Boat International Media, recognised this and it was in Florence this past weekend where the project team and Aquila’s owners were awarded the coveted Neptune trophy for the best-refitted yacht.<img alt="" src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/165549/image/large-97dc1db8898ce50456f13f4ab000f1c9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/165439" class="legacy">RWD Director, Tony Dixon commented from the ceremony, “This is a tremendous honour to receive this award. Aquila wins best refit category at World Superyacht Awards 2017

Based on one of the most southernmost tips of Britain, nestled away in the beautifully sleepy and surprisingly beautiful town of Falmouth, is Pendennis. A shipyard that has been in the game for over three decades, their portfolio consists of some of the most technically challenging yet rewarding transformation projects, impressive refit projects, and an array of new build superyachts - both motor and sail - that are destined to be sailing the Seven Seas for years to come. With a substantial investment in facilities over the past few years, the sheds at Pendennis are full to capacity with no quiet period looming on the horizon. So, we asked joint Managing Director, Henk Wiekens - what’s the secret to success?

Born in Holland, Wiekens journey to Pendennis started in the late 60s, just north of Amsterdam. Working for a small local shipyard, he learned his boat building skills at a relatively early age and by 1978, at the tender age of 25, he made the leap to building his own boats with a friend. Working with a similarly aged client, together his partner and himself built a small ketch from scratch - a ketch that went on to sail the world - and he was hooked. Moving to New Zealand together with their families in the early 80s, Wiekens continued to build boats - successfully.

So successfully in fact that what would become the Pendennis yard we know today invited Wiekens over to Falmouth to contribute to a small project. Accepting the invite from Peter de Savary - owner at the time - the initial invitation soon developed into a little more than originally anticipated: “Pendennis were building a couple of 12-metres for the Blue Arrow campaign in the summer of ‘88. During that time it became clear that the 12-metre market was gone for the America’s Cup. They then wanted to go into the superyacht business, so I was invited to set up the yard here and to take care of the construction of the first yacht, the 37-metre Taramber (now La Cattiva)... It was supposed to be a period of 18 months but, as you can see, I’m still here!”

One of the contributing factors to the permanent extension of Wiekens stay in Falmouth was the introduction to Mike Carr, six months after landing in the UK. Carr, who had worked with Vosper Thornycroft for a number of years, came from a more formally trained background in naval architecture and with an entirely different approach to business. It was in 1993 when Wiekens and Carr decided to take the leap with a management buyout, helped by De Savary. Now, they are - perhaps rather unusually - joint Managing Directors, an arrangement that continues to work to this day.

One of the principle elements of future proofing in recent years is most definitely the significant investment in the development of the yard’s facilities. Coming in at an eye-watering £24,000,000 and taking a number of years, Pendennis increased their capacity with three new sheds for new build and refit projects from 30 to 100 metres, as well as an enclosed yacht basin. The tangible benefits of such was immediately tasted at the yard, when the largest project ever to come to Pendennis, Aquila, in the summer of 2015, was apparently eager to be the first to experience the new and improved Pendennis shipyard. “After we increased our facilities we were taken to the test quite quickly,” Wiekens reminisces, “basically the concrete of the new facilities was still curing when she came in!”

Though Aquila is one of the most important projects undertaken at Pendennis in recent years, Wiekens warmly remembers an altogether different project some 20 years previous, a project in which he attributes to the possibility of essential growth and development at the company. It was 1995 when the 1903 schooner Adela was first welcomed into the Pendennis family. “Adela has fantastic owners and for me personally Adela will always have a big soft spot because she made so many things possible,” he says. “That’s the same with Rebecca and Adix as well. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to be so heavily involved from the word go, and working with the owners on that. These boats are landmarks.”

The design challenge presented by Adela was to incorporate every conceivable modern yacht system and convenience into the interior without losing the je ne sais quoi of the original W.C. Storey design. Today, Adela cuts a classic profile blending traditional fittings with modern technology within her sumptuous interior as well as on deck. Since her initial restoration Adela has returned to the yard for remodelling work in 2000, during which she had a 5-metre mid-ship's hull extension, and for routine maintenance refits at both Pendennis facilities in Falmouth and Palma in 2006, 2012 and 2015. Speaking fondly of the project, Wiekens says, “A boat like Adela, 1903, a lot of purists had a lot of criticisms at the time, but since she left the yard in 1996, she’s done so many miles and the owners have so much fun with it. Adela really has been all around the world and races and sails… It really has been great.”

But it’s not just beautiful classic sailing boats that comprise Pendennis’ refit and transformation portfolio (though there are a fair few, the 1928 Fair Lady and 1930’s-built Shamrock V both from Camper &amp; Nicholsons as well as the 1915 Herreshoff-built Mariette of 1915), and they are no strangers to large, modern superyachts. One of the most recent examples is undoubtedly the aforementioned 85.6-metre Aquila (ex; Cakewalk), which was redelivered to her owners in summer 2016.

The largest yacht to grace the yard - made possible of course by that substantial investment that proves to be reaping the rewards - and the largest refit project ever undertaken in the UK to date, the scope of the project at hand was daunting to say the least. A complete revitalisation of all five deck levels required the interiors on board to be stripped back to bulkheads across most areas, and saw the addition of a 60 square metre private deck area, a complete repaint, extensive technological upgrades and the rebuild of four generators - and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The result is, what the company believes, a new benchmark for large refit yacht programmes, a statement that would be hard to argue with.

Even though many in the industry have now come to automatically associate the Pendennis yard with refit and rebuilds, there are still plenty of new builds in Pendennis’ portfolio, including the largest privately owned luxury sailing catamaran in the world, the 44.2-metre Hemisphere, the 55-metre explorer yacht Steel (which was back home in the yard at the time of writing boasting a brand new paint job), and the 46-metre Ron Holland designed ketch, Christopher. Commenting on this assumption, Wiekens states, “We certainly do have more of a reputation now as a refit yard because more boats come through the yard, but for us, the big business plan was always a mix of both: new build and refit.”

So with such a varied and impressive portfolio, what is the secret to this steady success over the past quarter century? Of course long term visions, future proofing the company with investment and development, an attractive offering to both new build and refit markets, all come into play. But one of the most important aspects of their secret to success is their commitment to people. During my time at the yard, I met people from all sides of the business: from MD, to Marketing Director, from Project Managers to apprentices. People who have been at the company for a matter of months, people who have been there since the very beginning, and from the atmosphere and the attitudes I was presented with, it was obvious: Pendennis care about the people that work for them.

The almost family like nature of the business of course makes logical business sense: happy employees equals increased productivity and a more dedicated, passionate work ethic, which of course then plays into the success of a project and the quality of the end result. And, realistically, this is probably a huge contributing factor when it comes to clients coming back again and again and again. Wiekens says: “What we’ve got here is a big variety of how you can do things differently and just give a personal touch. A yacht is not just a thing to have, it’s a thing they want to put their own creativity and energy into. Clients don’t need yachts, they want them. If the experience isn’t fun, then they will never see you again.”

So with nearly 30 years’ under their belt at the top, what’s next for Pendennis? “Mike and I are on the runners right now, not on the helm!” Wiekens laughs. “We’ve put ourselves in a position where whatever the market will do, we will be able to adapt to it very quickly, and it’s not dependent on Mike and I. We have set out a long term strategy - as you can see with the investment we have done - and that is not just for the next two years. We’re now set up knowledge and skills wise to easily continue for another 30 years. The long term strategy is for another two, three, four generations to continue with this company. Boats will be different by that time, but I think boats like Adela, for example, will still be around. They still need to be looked after over the years, but these are boats that are going to be timeless.” With passion and people at their core, Pendennis certainly looks set to stand the test of time.

The latest edition of the SuperYacht Times newspaper is out now, featuring interviews with some of the industry’s most significant players, including Benetti, Philippe Briand, Pendennis, Floating Life, Zuccon International Project and the owner of the recently launched Seven Sins, Hugo Verlinden.

We travelled to Falmouth in this issue, where we met up with joint Managing Director of the Pendennis shipyard, Henk Wiekens. With the summer 2016 completion of the largest refit ever undertaken in the UK, that of the 85.6-metre Aquila (ex; Cakewalk), Wiekens shares some of the most interesting stories to come out of the yard over the past 25 years. Shedding some light on the brand’s specialisations and reputation, Wiekens comments: “We certainly do have more of a reputation now as a refit yard because more boats come through the yard, but for us, the big business plan was always a mix of both: new build and refit.”

Over in Italy we also visit the renowned Italian designer, Giovanni Zuccon, at Zuccon International Project’s Rome-based studio. With their latest project, the 74-metre Cloud 9, launched at the end of January this year, we talk to Zuccon about what’s next for the company as well as the importance of an increased focus on research and design in the superyacht industry. With the aim to invest 15% of the businesses turnover into ZED Research - the studio’s in house R&amp;D department - Zuccon comments: “The industry is indeed small, but that shouldn’t count as a justification to not invest in research. I’m investing in the research myself, and I hope that by talking to others in the industry about it more people will follow.”

A little closer to home, we’re excited to share a passionate Belgian owner’s insight into superyachting with Hugo Verlinden, an owner with 30 years of ownership experience. Taking delivery of the 52-metre Sanlorenzo Seven Sins earlier this year, he excitedly told us his plans to enjoy every second of his new toy: “I have installed a forward-facing camera on the bridge that allows me to connect to it from anywhere in the world,” he says. “This allows me to enjoy the sea and the islands in the evening from my iPad. I can see what the Captain sees and it feels like you are on the bridge. It’s fantastic!”

Superyachts outside Gustavia, St Barths

One of the most popular superyacht hotspots during the winter cruising season is without a doubt the island of St Barths. Known as the St Tropez of the Caribbean, Saint Barthelemy attracts a crowd of high profile yachts each like few other islands in the area. New Year’s eve is a particularly busy time outside the main port of Gustavia with some of the largest yachts in the world dropping anchor here. The recently refitted 86-metre superyacht, Aquila can be made out on the far right in this image.

The 86.5 Superyacht Aquila in Antigua

Following a recent refit that lasted over 12 months, the 86.5-metre superyacht Aquila has arrived in the Caribbean in December. The Derecktor-built yacht underwent an intensive modifications period at Pendennis in England and emerged in July last year as the yard’s largest ever refit project. The project involved Burgess as yacht managers, Redman Whiteley Dixon and Susan Young Interiors as design teams, and Metrica for installing the new yacht’s new interior. Launched as Cakewalk by Derecktor Shipyards in Connecticut in 2010, Aquila is designed by Tim Heywood with an interior created by Elizabeth Dalton of Dalton Designs and is currently the largest private yacht ever constructed in the United States. Aquila changed hands in 2014 when she was acquired by her current owners.

British refit shipyard Pendennis has recently completed its largest refit project to date (and the largest in Britain) when the 85.6 metre superyacht Aquila set sail from Falmouth for the Mediterranean. The project involved Burgess as yacht managers, Redman Whiteley Dixon and Susan Young Interiors as design teams, and Metrica for installing the new yacht’s new interior.

Work was largely focused on updating Aquila’s interior spaces. 750 square metres of social, guest and technical areas were stripped to a near in-build state in order to successfully recreate the interior according to her owners’ tastes. A new cinema has been added to the main deck area, owner’s suite reconfigured and new materials and finishing surfaces throughout the interior. “We selected a mix of dark wood finishes, pale leather panels with nickel trim and many new special surface materials all interplaying together to offer subtle style variations throughout the interior,” explains RWD Director Tony Dixon.

A key new feature is the installation of a custom-made chandelier that stretches 11.2 metres over the four interior guest decks, consisting of over 850 individual hand-blown glass pieces. The team at Susan Young Interiors were focussed on seeing this piece of art become a reality.

Joint Managing Director of Pendennis, Mike Carr, comments on the dynamics of the project: “In order to effectively manage a project of this scale Pendennis assigned four project managers, each with responsibility for specific aspects of the programme. They facilitated effective communication between all partners, which consisted of a combined international team of over 1,000 people at the peak of the project.”

Changes to the exterior involved moving the sundeck Jacuzzi to the forward part of the deck, creating an additional 60 square metre private deck area for the owner’s suite and technology upgrades on the mast with new radar, AV and IT equipment. The superstructure was also completely repainted.

“It is a tribute to all those involved in the project that the Owners can now reap the benefits of this collective effort, taking back their beloved Aquila and enjoy cruising again in the months and years ahead,” commented Burgess’ Fleet Technical manager, Adrian Tinkler. “Burgess is looking forward to representing Aquila as part of their Operational and Charter Management fleets, fully restyled, refreshed and ready to serve her Owners and charter guests in the next chapter of her story.”

Pendennis comments on refit of 85.6m Aquila

What has been an intensive one-year refit project has come to an end this month as the 85.6 metre superyacht Aquila set off from the Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, U.K. this past weekend. The yacht is expected to make her way to Mediterranean waters for the summer season, and will reach Gibraltar this week.

Details surrounding the refit are still unclear but from these images it would seem that most of the past year was spent refitting the yacht’s interior as exterior areas have remained largely unchanged. Aquila’s iconic Tim Heywood arches on the top deck have been repainted a lighter shade along with the installation of a new mast communications setup.

85.6m superyacht Aquila departs Pendennis following major refit

			The U.S. shipyard Derecktor is a family-owned business, originally founded by Robert E. (Bob) Derecktor in 1947 and today run by his son, Paul Derecktor.  A self-taught boat builder, his journey into shipbuilding flourished due to a passion for building boats. As a keen sailor himself, he moved to New York in 1947 after completing his service in the Navy during WWII with one aim in mind: to create unique, seaworthy vessels. 
				 

			In just two short years, Bob had accrued and perfected enough skills, recommendations and perhaps most importantly, the finance, to be able to opFdoroen up his own shipyard. Director of Business Development at Derecktor, James Brewer, elaborates on the origins of the yard: “Over the next 30-odd years he built a succession of successful wooden sailing and motor-yachts, and then started building some commercial boats as well. This experience culminated in 2010 with the delivery of Cakewalk which, at 281’ and 2998 gross tons, is the largest private yacht ever built in the U.S. when measured by volume.”

				It seems as though Bob was destined to build boats, and Derecktor as a yard went on to prove itself instrumental in the building of aluminum yachts. Brewer continues, “He pioneered the use of aluminum in boat building in the 50s, and has since become a prolific builder of aluminum vessels; both yachts and commercial boats. The focus has always been on unique and technically challenging boats - we’ve never been a cookie-cutter builder.” 
			 

			Derecktor’s influence progressed with the opening of another yard in Fort Lauderdale in 1964, an expansion which significantly contributed to the development of the marine industry in the region.

			The shipyard in Florida is where the main bulk of Derecktor’s long list of refit projects are completed, and is a part of the business that developed slowly over time. Instead of making an initial heavy investment in the machinery, personnel and skills required to run a successful refit yard, Bob Derecktor decided to simply add to it year by year. “The Florida yard was developed a little bit differently,” explains Brewer. “This yard was built out of cash flow rather than out of a significant, initial investment. Obviously Bob bought the land and put the buildings up and put the lift system in, but the rest of it was developed over the course of the next 15 years.”
			 

			Success continued at Derecktor, and, the consequence of continued success? The eventual need for that substantial investment in expansion that Derecktor had, to this point, managed to bypass. For Derecktor, this meant the investment in a brand new mobile lift which would enable them to service an increased number of yachts. Brewer says, “With the recession, the smaller boat market pretty much died away and it’s still suffering today. We put in a bigger lift largely because our synchrolift was showing its age and to meet a growing demand."
			 

			“We were either going to have to put a lot of money into old equipment, or invest in a system that would enable us to use the facility to a better advantage. [Now] we can have up to ten large yachts on the land at one time.” Today, the lift is the largest of its kind serving the yacht market in the U.S., proof, perhaps, that the aforementioned slow and steady method really does win the proverbial race. 
			 

			The installation of the lift helped the yard to be able to undertake significant projects such as the refit of the 45 metre Dorothea 3 last year, as well as the extensive refit of Anodyne currently underway in Florida which, currently, barely qualifies as a refit.  Originally constructed by the Brazilian shipyard, Inace, in 2010, she is being rebuilt almost in her entirety. Brewer says, “Anodyne is as close to a new construction project you can get without actually building a hull from scratch. This particular client would like to call it a new construction, essentially. It will pretty much be a ground-up restoration.”

			Speaking further of the vast scope of the project which is scheduled to be completed in 2017, we asked whether or not the new Anodyne will bear the Derecktor name. Brewer answers: “We’ve talked about that; it’s a matter of what the regulatory agencies will accept. Certainly we’ve got a lot of involvement in this boat but when you come right down to it, we didn’t lay the keel.” 
			 
			Aside from the quite blatant points of contention in regards to Anodyne’s refit-cum-rebuild, what exactly defines a refit is generally a matter of interpretation. What some may call a refit, others may call a repair, and with many in the industry holding different opinions, there is no clear answer. 
			 

			Derecktor let us know their definition: “What I call a refit and what somebody else calls a refit is subjective. It is very difficult to clarify because what one person determines to be a repair, the other person maybe consider to be betterment. The dividing line is between discretion: do I really need to do this or do I want to do this? And then betterment: am I making the vessel substantially different to what it was before? Am I improving the vessel, am I upgrading the vessel, or am I simply keeping the specification the same and freshening it? Even that is open to interpretation.”

			 
				Though the classification of the work being done at Derecktor blurs the lines, one thing that is crystal clear is the company’s dedication to transparency in all elements of their work - whether that’s refit or new build projects. Derecktor told us that though many refit yards actively take on specific agreements with certain shipyards, they have decided not to. Instead, Derecktor focuses on building good, all-inclusive relationships with builders, which enables them to offer fair, honest work to everyone in the industry.

British superyacht repair facility Pendennis is currently enjoying a busy refit period with three yachts in the yard, the latest of which is the return of sailing yacht Adela. Increasing activity at Pendennis shipyard

Superyachts Romea and Aquila were spotted together last month in the UK, when both yachts made a stop at the Isle of Man. The yachts were seen together in Douglas Bay, where the brand new Abeking &amp; Rasmussen 82 metre Romea anchored out, and the 85.6 metre Aquila was in the port, following her Atlantic crossing. The Isle of Man has seen an increasing number of superyacht visitors, Tatoosh was one of her more recent visitors. Superyacht Cakewalk anchored off Sint Maarten

North America is still the most significant market for the yachting industry, ahead of Russia and the Middle East. This was the conclusion of a panel of industry experts hosted by Burgess on board the spectacular motor yacht Cakewalk during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) last month.Built by Derecktor, the sensational 85.6m Cakewalk is the largest volume superyacht ever constructed in the United States. Currently offered for sale by Burgess as Central Agents, the yacht represented the perfect platform for a discussion on the state of the market. The panel also faced questions on the importance of FLIBS for the superyacht industry at large, environmental responsibility and the ever-elusive question: where do buyers come from?Burgess President &amp; CEO Jonathan Beckett was a key member of the panel alongside President &amp; CEO of Show Management Skip Zimbalist, President of the Florida Yacht Brokers Association Lon McCloskey, and Michael Moore of Moore &amp; Co and Chairman of the Board for The International SeaKeepers Society. Jill Bobrow, Editor-at-Large for Yachts International Magazine, moderated the discussion.The panellists debated where today’s serious buyers are based, with Beckett concluding: “North America remains our single biggest market. The appetite for yachting here is very strong. South America has an increasingly important presence in the yachting industry, and Russia and the Middle East continue to push the demand for ever larger vessels.”The current trend for building megayachts was discussed further and the panel ventured opinions on whether this is sustainable. “Yachts are increasing in size,” said Beckett. “But, it’s a very finite market. There are probably only 50 people in the world who want to own a 100m+ yacht. Several years down the line, I could see there perhaps being 50 of those megayachts out there, with only 49 buyers.”FLIBS has established itself as the most important yacht show in North America. Panellists were quick to point out that the show caters to many levels of clients, ranging from those looking for a small fishing boat, to a 60m superyacht. “Unlike the shows in Europe, FLIBS was designed for everyone,” said Zimbalist. “Our challenge is catering to each of those groups.”Zimbalist said that attendance on the first day of the show had increased by 40% from 2012, signalling that green shoots of post-recession recovery are now tangible. Despite these healthy figures, for Burgess, which specialises in the large yacht sector, it’s not just about the numbers. “We only need one man on one day for one yacht,” said Beckett. “We’re looking for active buyers.”According to Zimbalist, FLIBS has a strong focus on the global market, with exhibitors from 35 different countries represented over the last two years. McCloskey added that the Florida Yacht Brokers Association also has a growing global perspective and is broadening its horizons, having recently attended the Shanghai Yacht Show, seeking new business prospects in Asia.Sitting in the opulent environment of Cakewalk’s main saloon, the panel concluded that with yachts – no matter what size the vessel – it is all about the experience. Moore said: “You can’t replicate the feeling of being on a yacht. Derecktor Shipyards Conn. LLC, based in Bridgeport, CT, announced today that it is seeking protection under the Chapter 11 bankruptcy and reorganization laws. A depressed economy, the cash drain of investment made in building out the Bridgeport facility, and a recent lack of new construction opportunities, have put a tremendous strain on the company's finances. The shipyard is seeking strategic alternatives, including an investor or buyer of the yard. The Bridgeport yard's location and capabilities made it very competitive for both yacht and commercial new construction, as well as service and refit projects, during stronger economic times. A significant success was the construction and delivery in 2009 of the 39 meter offshore terminal supply tug Independence. The company's most recent accomplishment was the construction and delivery in 2010 of m/y Cakewalk V - the largest private yacht built in the United States since 1930. Derecktor appoints new director of Yacht Service and New Construction Sales 

Lift-Emotion, leaders in producing custom elevators in every shape and size for the superyacht industry, will be participating in this year's Monaco Yacht Show. Lift-Emotion, known for designing every elevator desired by customer or architect, has had a busy year so far.Mike Brandt tells us the company worked on some very large, yet highly confidential projects, in the 80 metre + range, but also on some smaller projects. These projects include the refit of superyacht H2ome. For this record breaking 85.6m yacht, Lift Emotion delivered two custom made marine elevators. The delivery consisted of a completely custom passenger elevator and dumbwaiter. The passenger elevator was designed with a steel coated cabin customized by the interior designer, Liz Dalton, with state of the art high end finishes. In addition to a wealth of technical expertise, the Dutch company Azure Naval Architects now has its own team of in-house designers. The new department was established to better address the demand of clients who prefer to have technology and design carried out by a single company. Remember the date; August 8th 2010 was not just another summer Sunday for the United States yachting industry. Instead, at 10:30 a.m. a genuinely momentous event took place. For that moment marked the launch by Derecktor Shipyards of the 85.6 meter (281 ft) motor yacht Cakewalk, the largest yacht (by volume) ever built in the United States.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132188/image/large-cbedb7d2822642ca6b0131de1bd0d914.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132188"> When the stunning six deck, 2998 gross ton vessel floated off Derecktors new 4000 ton dry-dock into the waters of Bridgeport harbor, it was the culmination of an effort never before seen in American yacht building. Several years and many, many thousands of skilled labor hours, along with tireless work from the owners’ team and Derecktors project group were needed to make the original vision a remarkable reality. “Needless to say, as with any project of this scale and sophistication, there were some growing pains along the way, but we think the result speaks for herself” said an obviously pleased Paul Derecktor, President of the Derecktor group of shipyards.” For the first time, an American yard has shown it can equal or better the work of the best European yards. My brother Tom and I, along with everyone at Derecktor are very proud and we thank all the people who made this possible, in particular of course, the Owner and his team.” <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132189/image/large-766e21a3cb0bfeea4a63e26edc815dab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132189">Cakewalk was designed by Tim Heywood Designs with Naval Architecture by Azure Naval Architecture. Interior design was by Dalton Designs, Inc. Literally dozens of subcontractors from engineering firms to security specialists participated in the project. “We certainly could not have done it without them” commented Gavin Higgins, VP of Business Development at Derecktor. “Some of the world’s most experienced and skilled specialists put their expertise into this job. You cannot successfully build a yacht of this size and complexity with having that sort of talent available.” Reactions from those involved in the project are a mix of pride, satisfaction and in some cases awe at what has been accomplished. “She is superb” said Designer Tim Heywood. “The workmanship throughout is absolutely first-class, as good as you will find on any yacht in the world. I could not be more pleased for the owner and all involved”. Bill Zinser, Build Captain on Cakewalk and leader of the owners’ team, seemed as proud (and relieved) as a new parent, “She is what we knew she could be all along. It makes all the hard work, all the long days, worth it. We have great owners and we worked with a great group at Derecktor. We can’t wait to show her off to the world.” Notably, Cakewalk was christened for the owners by Carmen Golinski, the Interior Manager on board, indicative of the closeness of the owners and crew. The yacht will remain at Derecktor for the next few weeks undergoing final outfitting and sea trials. She is scheduled to make her much-awaited debut at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show in October. “Fittingly, this is Americas leading yacht show and she will be it’s leading lady” quipped Kathy Kennedy, Derecktor’s marketing director. Industry praise for the, blue hulled Cakewalk had been rolling in even prior to launch. Jonathan Beckett of Burgess commented some months ago that, “I am extremely impressed by the apparent quality of Cakewalk. The attention to detail – from both the technical and aesthetics points of view – I am very impressed indeed. Exclusive to the U.S. market, Derecktor Shipyards is proud to present a groundbreaking new superyacht concept by Azure Naval Architects BV of The Netherlands, its collaborator on the 281ft (85.6m) Cakewalk project now under way at the Derecktor Connecticut shipyard. Azure’s 52m (170ft) Awareness motor yacht project is designed to set a new standard for eco-friendly and efficient yacht operation. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129488/image/large-5b51d5bc6703d345a60f8b6ecb3ca579.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129488">The mission statement for the project was to create a 499 GT yacht that would provide her owners with unparalleled comfort while at the same time producing the lowest achievable environmental impact possible for a yacht utilizing conventional propulsion. “Energy consumption is projected to be 30-percent less than in a traditional superyacht of comparable size,” said Hugo van Wieringen, Azure’s Director and Chief Naval Architect. Three different design aspects of the Awareness project combine to produce this outstanding energy efficiency. First, her hull is longer than that of a typical 500 GT yacht, with beam of only 27.88ft (8.5m), in order to reduce resistance as she navigates through the water. Her sophisticated propulsion package couples smaller-than-usual main engines with extra-large-diameter propellers, enabling Awareness to offer a cruising speed of 12 knots and maximum speed of 14 knots while lowering the yacht’s fuel consumption and carbon footprint. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129489/image/large-4fb6b0866d3afdf9085004aaa809d4a5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129489">Solar panels which Azure has beautifully integrated into the yacht’s superstructure help power the domestic services load on board. “It’s not a large amount of energy, but it’s continuous when the sun is shining,” said van Wieringen. “The solar panels should produce about a 10-percent energy savings.” Finally, the yacht’s commercial-grade insulation package, specially treated windows and well-engineered air-conditioning systems ensure that her domestic services consume less energy both under way and while in port. “When the owners and guests are off the boat, the crew can push the ‘Green Button’,” van Wierengen said. This automatically resets the interior lighting, temperature and appliances to a lower setting. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129490/image/large-d7160f64a93afae1d9cb93c79eba376a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129490">Awareness may be environmentally efficient, but that doesn’t mean her owners have to compromise on the yacht’s looks and accommodations. “I think she is good-looking because we successfully reduced the height of her superstructure without sacrificing interior comfort,” van Wieringen said. “In addition, she offers a lot of exterior deck space because of her extra length.” The 52M project has an interior general arrangement that can be customized to meet the individual tastes and desires of her owners. She is designed to accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms, including a full-beam master suite with private office on the main deck. The main deck features a spacious salon, lounge and formal dining area with seating for 10, served by a fully equipped galley. A sky lounge with cinema and breakfast bar is located on the bridge deck. The sun deck is equipped with a bar, Jacuzzi, sunbathing area and convenient powder room tucked within the radar mast. Derecktor and the Cakewalk team unveiled a model of the new Cakewalk presently in build at Derecktor. Derecktor unveils the 85.6m Tim Heywood designed Cakewalk

Lift Emotion B.V. from the Netherlands proudly announces receipt of the order to deliver a marine elevator system for The Project Dancer, the largest motor yacht built in US in over 75 years. The Luxury motor yacht is presently in construction at Derecktor Shipyards in Bridgeport Connecticut.
