Last week we received footage from Anders Berg who had captured the transport of the unfinished Oyster 118 sailing yacht from the Southampton shipyard of Oyster Yachts to Southampton. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/41264/image/large-30bf22843950e97e5b1c90477ca63340.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41264"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/41265/image/large-46b132c2f8dffccede9e983ab82294f0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41265">After a few days we finally have word from Pendennis who released the following statement:“Oyster Yachts and Pendennis Shipyard are now working together to deliver the first Oyster 118 which will be handed over to her owner next year. &nbsp;Oyster &amp; Pendennis, two market leading British shipyards, share a vision to protect and secure a successful future for the UK marine industry.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41267/image/large-29b372e65aafedd35968a461dc39e276.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41267"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/5680/image/large-f752e2e5878da065dbcf637bd202f046.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/5680">In a recent interview with SuperYacht Times, the new owner of Oyster Yachts, Richard Hadida, already said that company was looking for a partner to complete the Oyster 118: “We have very recently come to a decision that we would like to find a partner to build the Oyster 118 for us, and are currently looking to team up with a British shipyard which is used to building boats of this size. Going forward, Oyster is going to focus our efforts on what we do best: 50-90 foot, beautiful bluewater boats."&nbsp;<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/279405183" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe><img src="/uploads/store/photo/5686/image/large-4c031594350afff4bf3135dac825c71a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/5686">The Oyster 118 yacht was originally announced by the company back in March 2015 and in November 2016 the completed hull was moved to the outfitting shed. Due to the financial problems of the yard the project was put on hold. She was originally due for completion in 2018, but we do expect that it will most likely be 2019 now. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/41268/image/large-cc8088aa5845972364088c33eb90ccfc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41268"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/46764" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster secures build of second 118 sailing yacht (2017-01-05 09:00:00 +0100)">A second contract</a> for an Oyster 118 was announced in January 2017 and Oyster confirmed that this project is currently still under construction.&nbsp;

Oyster Yachts & Pendennis to complete first Oyster 118 sailing yacht

In a recent milestone development in the construction of the largest Oyster yacht to have been built in the U.K. to date, the British shipyard successfully transported the GRP moulded hull of its first Oyster 118 sailing yacht to the shipyard in Southampton where she will be completed. With construction having started last year, the project is expected to be ready for delivery in 2018.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/162915/image/large-6f6df114895d6edc72c718936772660b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/162915">Featuring a highly customisable interior, the first 118 unit is set up with family use in mind specifically. Update: largest Oyster superyacht built in UK takes shape

We met up with David Tydeman, CEO of Oyster Yachts to discuss their ground breaking superyacht sailing project currently under construction in Southampton, the Oyster 118.  <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/162904/image/large-6756b7b08f220c611fbdda953d91bd74.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/162904">Although the 118 is not the largest yacht built under the Oyster brand, we ask David what makes the 118 so special to the company. “This is our largest yacht ever constructed in England. The British owner insisted on having the yacht built here, so offering him one of our 100 or 125 models was never an option.”   <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/162905/image/large-f4e09dbcd28740e0c7519e65c362d584.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/162905"> As with previous large Oyster models, performance is key, but being able to spend quality time on board with family and friends is what every Oyster is about. David tells us that the first 118 has pushed the boundaries in terms of interior layout to accommodate such a family lifestyle. “The owner enjoys taking his entire family sailing so the yacht has been specifically set up with this use in mind. There are five guest cabins placed in the aft part of the yacht, with a possible extra sixth cabin up forward and three crew cabins in the bow. Which is quite unusual for a 118 foot sail yacht.”  <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/162906/image/large-ba03a6c51b2d8938eb22809947fd1664.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/162906"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/162907/image/large-1d2f63c4acd07110a993bfab3a77daca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/162907">Interior arrangements are completely customisable we are told, with David showing us a few possible layout options already drawn up by other interested parties. “Hull two can be moulded in late 2016 and hull three in 2017.” The LY3 code played a big part in the development of the yacht, with the yard feeling that a minimum of 110 feet would be required to build a code-compliant vessel with at least four cabins for the owner. The owner of the first 118 is a repeat client whose experience gave a clear vision of what he wanted in his new yacht.  <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/162908/image/large-901b98f26efe5cc03fc8764f933894f0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/162908">In addition to their new build projects, Oyster have invested generously into the development of the brand under the Oyster family. One such event is the Oyster World Rally, which each owner can look forward to. “The Rally started in 2013/2014 and we did that to celebrate the company’s 40-year anniversary. The interest created by the first event made us organise a second Rally, starting in 2017 that will take 27 months. Behind the entire event are owners’ dinners, regattas and other social events. The unique thing about the rally is that, although there might be other boats out there, we have the right type of owners with the right type of yachts, each with the time and money to enjoy these events."

An inside look at the Oyster 118 project

Oyster Yachts has announced that the build of the Oyster 118, has commenced. Drawn in partnership with Humphreys Yacht Design, the shipyard are building additional construction facilities to enable them to build the second Oyster 118 whilst the first is in build. The addition of the facility means that the brand will be able to produce four 118’s before summer 2020.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152952/image/large-676a4312c5cc3488c2e470ee068c7ae9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152952">The new design accommodates up to 12 guests as well as a crew of six in an approximately 700m3 interior space. The first built, anticipated to launch in December 2017, will feature in the aft lower deck a five cabin/four head plan, and with an emphasis on cockpit dining she will feature a huge social area with potential for frontward observation seating. On the forward lower deck there are options again for a sixth suite and or a snug and TV room that will convert to a children’s bunk room on hull one.There is ample scope for personalisation in arrangements above and below, including an alternative squared stem profile which adds a further metre to deck length.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152953/image/large-0404e31817579ea455e68fca81a03153.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152953">Built to demanding DNV classification and MCA LY3 coding, innovative design features include the mid-boom, single-point mainsheet penetrating the bimini top to run down through the glazed but carbon reinforced saloon entry bulkhead to the captive winch deep in the boat. Further complex design work includes a gullwing escape hatch from engine room to deck opening out of the glazed sides of the superstructure.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152954/image/large-1084ee82072c854c4c98a9a9d0830366.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152954">Sail plan for hull one is single headstay, with removable inner forestay for jib, and asymmetrics tacking to the anchor strut prodder. For easy handling, captive winches can number four, tending mainsail halyard, then main and headsail sheets. The rig is four-spreader carbon with roller boom, and the nine-person Dieseljet RIB is launched from its foredeck pit by lift-pole homed on the mast, the pit then doubling as cushioned R&amp;R area.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152955/image/large-61794d7ffcc1e0955d83350765837139.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152955">CEO of Oyster Yachts, David Tydeman, says, “We are delighted to build the new Oyster 118 in Britain at our own Southampton facility. We have been working for nearly three years in close conjunction with Humphreys Yacht Design developing the specification and design and we’re really proud now to announce the contract to start work.
