The 39m sailing yacht Atalante in the Caribbean

Claasen Shipyards is one of the most highly respected sailing yacht builders in the world. Celebrating 30 years in business last year, the past three decades have seen the company go from strength to strength. From gaining fame on the race circuit with their almost-unbeatable flat bottomed yachts in the early 90s, to producing some of the world’s most beautiful classic yachts following the J-Class revival several years ago, Claasen quality and reputation have seemingly never faltered.

One of the biggest changes to come in recent times, however, appeared earlier this year in January, with the announcement that the shipyard has been jointly acquired by Vitters and the Claasen Management. A purely strategical move, both yards will retain their brand identities whilst at a management level, Claasen and Vitters will make and assess decisions collaboratively. There will be close ties in project management, with the two yards working with the same suppliers and contractors in the Netherlands.

 

Here we talk to Claasen’s CEO, Joachim Kieft, who sheds a little more light on their new, fruitful relationship with Vitters, the importance of the regatta scene, and how the sailing yacht market can be made more attractive to prospective owners.

 

Can you tell us about the changes that have been happening at Claasen this year regarding your relationship with Vitters?

Claasen and Vitters will keep their own brand name and identity where Claasen will focus on the classic designs and Vitters will continue the more modern designs. For our clients, Claasen will remain Claasen and Vitters will remain Vitters. Both shipyards have their own unique qualities and we will share knowledge and manpower so both Vitters and Claasen gain from the new relationship. The facilities will remain the same, but if the demand gets bigger, size-wise, then we would increase capacity.

 

 

How will Vitters benefit from this venture?

Together we can offer a wider range of superyachts - from 20 up to 90 metres. At Claasen a client can still build a custom built 20 metres for a competitive price, but when a repeat client would like to build a yacht which is too big for the capacity of Claasen, this client would have the yacht built at Vitters. Claasen has a small overhead with short communication lines and a hands on management which our clients like but we also realise that there are limits to our company set-up.

Do you think something needs to change in the industry to make the sailing yacht market more attractive to owners?

Yes, and there are a lot of things that could be done. The importance of a good service network is absolutely underestimated. I see a lot of shipyards who try to look after their clients, but not to the level where owners expect their service to be. The superyacht industry can definitely increase the quality level of service. The automotive industry is a good model for that, but not everything is transferrable.

 

Do you have any plans in motion to change that aspect of the industry at Claasen?

We will definitely increase our service network. We have a base in Palma, we are currently looking into the best location for a base in France and then we will probably expand to Newport and the Caribbean. That will be a service network that even other shipyards could benefit from. Down time should be close to zero - no matter where you are in the world. Time is the only thing you can’t buy with money, and most of our owners have very little to spare.

 

Is the regatta scene important to you?

Yes, it’s the fun bit. Our clients like to participate, to combine their competitive DNA with the fun of sailing with their friends and family and the ambience at the event. It’s also a social event where you have the chance to talk to other owners and combine a bit of business with pleasure. For shipyards it’s great to have your yachts racing together, and owners feel as though they are part of the Claasen family. When a client is happy with our product, he is the best part of my sales team.

 

The majority of the people you employ already have a sailing background. Do you feel this is an important aspect of Claasen?

The project managers all must know how to sail. How can you build a sailing yacht if you don’t know how to sail? Would you ever buy a car from somebody without a driver’s license?

It also gives a lot of trust to the owners, as well as the skippers.

We bring this kind of philosophy into every part of the build. I told a client that I couldn’t meet because I needed to do seatrails and he asked, ‘You do it yourself?’ I said, ‘Yes, why not?’ We stand behind the product and how it is built. The client said to me: ‘Now I know I’m at the right shipyard.’ I hadn’t really thought about it, because it just makes sense to me.

What are you working on right now?

We are now at construction number 152, so we’ve delivered around 60 vessels to date. Under construction we have a 90’ wooden classic, we just delivered a 127’ Atlante, which won the World Superyacht Awards in the 30 to 40 metre Sailing Yacht category. We have a lot of projects on the drawing board, ranging from 24 to 65 metres.

Insight: Claasen, sailing to success

The first official race day of the Superyacht Cup Palma kicked off this morning, with a total of 22 competing superyachts ready to take on the courses of Europe’s oldest regatta. Competition is set to be tough this year, with entrants such as the 45 metre Vitters-built Unfurled as well as the 45 metre Mari Cha III, boasting several prestigious awards and record breaking moments throughout their racing careers.

Four of last year's podium finishers are back to fiercely defend their title, including the 45 metre Wally Saudade, the Baltic-built Win Win, and the 46 metre Ganesha. Launched last summer, the 39 metre Atalante from Claasen will also be competing this year in Palma following a recent win in the World Superyacht Awards in the category Sailing Yachts 30m to 39.99m.

Another first timer is the 32 metre Southern Wind Sea Wave, with a clean sweep of three firsts she recently triumphed at the Rolex Capri International Regatta, the first race for both the boat and her owner. The newest boat in the fleet is the 27 metre Firebird.

Superyacht Cup veterans returning to Mallorca this year include the 24 metre Heartbeat (Claasen, Huisfit), designed by sponsors Hoek Design Naval Architects. This 2013 winner will be competing for the fourth consecutive time. Another regular racer in Palma is last year's Class B winner, the 33 metre Vitters-built Inouï.

The three vintage schooners competing this year, Mariette, Germania Nova and Naema, were joined by five other classic schooners yesterday to take part in the Big Class Day Sail. Famed for their grace and good looks as well as their racing prowess, the gathering made for a unique experience for spectators on shore and on the water.

First day of the Superyacht Cup Palma welcomes 22 entries

Kicking off on 22nd June this year is three days (racing from 23rd – 25th June) of intense racing off the Balearic island of Mallorca. The annual Superyacht Cup Palma is the longest running superyacht regatta in Europe and each year attracts a fleet of highly anticipated and ready-to-race superyachts. This year, the 20th Superyacht Cup, is now different and the total fleet now includes 23 of some of the most well-known regatta circuit racers on the water today. Here we take a look at just some of the yachts that will cross the start line come Thursday 23rd June.

The very first Truly Classic 127 from Claasen Shipyards, the 38.5 metre all aluminium sloop Atalante was built for an experienced and repeat Claasen client. Launched in late May, she features both naval architecture and interior design from Hoek Design Naval Architects. Since her delivery, she has been listed for charter by Hoek Brokerage.

The stunning superyacht Ganesha was delivered by the acclaimed Dutch shipyard Vitters in the fourth quarter of 2013 to her experienced owners. With her sleek lines and slender silhouette she is a beautiful sloop that seamlessly combines elegant style with top performance and efficiency. From her smooth, uncluttered exterior to her stylish lightweight interiors, she undoubtedly has the heart and soul of a racing yacht yet doesn't compromise on comfort in any way.

One of the brand new yachts in the fleet is the 2015-launched Seawave. Built by Southern Wind Shipyard in Cape Town, she is the fourth hull in the successful SW 102 mini-series and has proven herself a competent regatta contender. On deck she houses two fridges within the coamings to help keep her race crew fresh and hydrated.

Measuring 46 metres, Vitters Shipyard launched Unfurled in October from their facilities in Harlingen, the Netherlands. Constructed with both an aluminium hull and superstructure, she was designed by German Frers - the inaugural collaboration between the shipyard and designer. The modern interior design was created by the Owner with Stirling &amp; Co. Amongst her unique characteristics is the headsail storage system, which was developed in-house by Vitters.

Saudade

The Wally 148 Saudade, when launched in 2008 the largest Wally built to date, was built in Italy. Commissioned by an experienced yachtsman, Saudade features the lines of Tripp Design, with the modern interiors and styling of Eidsgaard Design. This was Tripp Design’s second collaboration with Wally at  that  time, and all efforts were made to achieve ultimate speed within the constraints of seamanship.

The Superyacht Cup Palma will also be part of the the Clean Regattas programme for the first time this year. This initiative is the world’s only sustainably certification for water-based events and aims to unite and mobilise sailors by offering support and eco-friendly resources to help conserve and protect our ocean. Practical examples of this movement includes the reduction of plastic materials used during the event, and promoting cycling to reach the Race Village.

An all-star fleet at the 20th Superyacht Cup Palma

During a star-studded evening in the picturesque city of Florence, Italy, the annual World Superyacht Awards, hosted by Boat International Media, took place over the weekend. No less than 23 Neptune trophies were handed over to winners of the various categories ranging from Motor and Sailing Yacht of the Year to awards for the best refitted yacht over the past 12 months as well as a list of special judges’ commendations. Constructed form carbon fibre, Doryan has a lifting keel that allows her to access shallower anchorages and marinas. Superyacht Truly Classic 127 Atalante launched

Dutch company Claasen Shipyards will celebrate 30 years of service to the yachting community this year. Founded in 1985, the shipyard originally made a name for themselves in the Dutch market with their flat-bottomed yachts.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152286/image/large-46fdd67eaa46385b8da4ffdadb63160a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152286">Almost a decade later in the mid-1990s, the yard had started building yachts which combined traditional looks with ultra-modern underwater configurations. Named Truly Classics, a total of nineteen of these superyachts have been launched to date. Claasen has also been part of the J-class revival, launching Lionheart in 2010 and currently building ‘SVEA’, based on the 1937 design by Tore Holm.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152287/image/large-d28bd887037ad2aa7163bab9e82ada06.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152287">Managing Director of Claasen, Joachim Kieft, comments on the future of the shipyard, noting they have ambitious plans for the years ahead. Claasen Shipyards celebrate 30 years of service

In November 2012 a repeat client commissioned Claasen Shipyards to build a new Truly Classic 126ft. Claasen Shipyards has built many such yachts, all of which are designed by Hoek Naval Architects and are characterised by their combination of classic lines and advanced technologies.<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/iuO1EC_PMKA" width="560"></iframe>The summer of 2013 marked the start of the construction of the new Truly Classic hull at Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw in Makkum and it is now nearing completion. The new yacht will be the largest in the Truly Classic range. The construction of the interior – also from the boards of Hoek Design -­‐ is also in full swing. The yacht will have a classic interior with various unique details in the woodwork. The walls and floors are made of Sweatania mahogany, while the floor borders are accentuated with maple inlays. The cabin ceilings will be finished in white to increase the sense of spaciousness. Construction of new Truly Classic 126 well underway

With an LOA of 22.07 m and a beam of 5.63 m, Bougainville is a special project for the way she incorporates the very latest technologies and most advanced yacht building methods. The keel is fitted with an hydraulic lifting system, giving the yacht a depth of 2.30 m and 3.90 m, respectively.Bougainville is being built to the MCA code for sailing yachts up to 24 m and will be CE-A certified.Other projects at the yard are a 90 foot Truly Classic, and a 60 foot Dykstra design. Sailing yacht Bougainville almost ready to be launched

Hoek Design in the Netherlands has signed a contract for an exhilarating new model in the Truly Classic range. At 38.40 metres, the TC126 will be the largest TC to date and synthesise all the developments of recent years in terms of versatility, layout, performance, keel configuration and sail plan. The project is for a repeat client and will be built by Claasen Shipyards, with MCM serving as the owner’s representatives. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141357/image/large-03740a26f03ea7c9f9c95d959df304e6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141357">The exciting new TC126 will incorporate all the experiences of the owner with his previous Truly Classic as well as the know-how and expertise built up at Hoek Design on more than 80 modern and Truly Classic designs. “As is the case with all our projects the design of the yacht will be extensively optimised for performance,” explains Andre Hoek. “The hull lines, keel design and sail plan will benefit from the extensive research that our office has carried out over the years with tank and wind tunnel testing on these type of yachts. We shall also leverage on the valuable CFD work performed on various other hull designs.” When she is completed in the summer of 2015, the first Sloop-rigged TC126 will be used for family cruising, chartering and Spirit of Tradition racing. The design of a Ketch-rigged version is also available to clients who prefer a styling very similar to the renowned 180ft Hoek Designed yacht Adele. The interior concept incorporates an aft owner’s stateroom leading to a private deckhouse and aft cockpit. “Uniquely, there will also be a full-beam lower saloon just in front of the stateroom,” adds Hoek. “This will create a dedicated interior owner’s area and offer lots of privacy, especially when our clients choose to cruise without guests. This will be the first Truly Classic yacht to feature such a layout.” The TC126 will also have two guest suites aft of the main deckhouse, although the option also exists to place them forward. There is good accommodation for five crew members in three cabins with a separate laundry, mess and galley. Moving to the deck, the aft cockpit contains a helm station connected to a navigation deckhouse. At anchor this nav station is transformed into the owner's office, generating privacy in the centre cockpit for charter and family cruising with a separation between crew and guests. The main deckhouse features a dining area to port, a settee to starboard and a small pantry. A different deck layout is possible on future TC126 projects with dual helm stations just forward of the owner’s deckhouse. Interior style-wise, the first TC126 will have a classic look &amp; feel with raised and fielded panels, white painted panels above wainscot level and a range of timeless details. A small fireplace will be built into the lower saloon to increase the air of cosiness. The yacht also benefits from proven technology and simple systems. A Scania main engine will drive a controllable pitch propeller, while two Northern Lights generators serve as the main electric and hydraulic source. The yacht will have drum winches rather than captives, with a hydraulic cylinder operating the main sheet, and all sailing winches are hydraulic too. Other highlights include a side-boarding platform with a carbon boarding ladder and carbon passerelle. She will also feature a carbon spade rudder and carbon spars and rigging. The yacht will feature a traditional classic hull with sweeping sheer line, and long overhangs. The layout on deck is based on a proven concept of a private master cockpit aft and a centrally positioned guest cockpit and deckhouse. These guest areas allow for both inside and outside dining and lounging. The towering carbon rig will feature a full set of carbon rigging and suit of modern racing sails. Down below the main salon is positioned aft of the full width engine room and forward of the full width master stateroom. The salon will be fitted with a fireplace and high end entertainment systems. In the stateroom, mirrored around the centerline there will be a separate head and shower. Against the aft bulkhead there will be a king size bed flanked by comfortable seating on either side.
