It has been some time since we last reviewed the world’s largest sailing yachts, and several major additions have entered the global fleet. The rankings have shifted. Its immense size was startling. The delicate operation required four cranes, two on the hard and two on floating barges. These centred around the owner’s appreciation of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Athena90.0m (295'3&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2004">Athena</a>, but evolved into a more contemporary schooner design with a plumb bow and a long waterline for better performance under sail.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/44738/image/large-1c2ef7f7849765ddec7fe33a01f88223.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/44738">“The owner wanted more boat speed to see more of the world under sail,” says New Zealander Tod Thompson, the owner’s captain and representative. “He’s an engineer and understands the technical issues associated with building such a big boat, but I think that was part of the attraction for him. He also appreciates quality, which is why he came back to&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>&nbsp;to build it.”A year was spent on the design, engineering and construction planning before the keel was laid in June 2017. From the outset, it is was clear that the size of the project presented some logistical challenges. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> had to first extend its main construction shed to contain the massive project, but also review its production and management procedures to ensure that the build process progressed smoothly, on budget and on schedule.The shipyard embraced a concept known as ‘concurrent design’, a method of product development based on completing processes at the same time while involving all disciplines. A related process is ‘stage gating’, by which a project is divided into distinct stages separated by decision points known as ‘gates’. Both methodologies are commonly used in the aerospace and satellite industries with the aim of increasing time and cost efficiency while maintaining quality.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/103765/image/large-697d581a8cebfcd6fff35da80a9b299f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103765">“Basically, before starting each phase of construction we discuss what we want to deliver, what the details and implications are, and make decisions together with the departments that come after,” explains Arjo Spans, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>’s project manager on Sea Eagle II. “It’s more than a decision-making mechanism; it also facilitates communication, discussion and knowledge sharing between team members.”Another production improvement has been the adoption of modular skid fabrication. Instead of installing engineering components individually, the systems are assembled within a frame or ‘skid’ for plug-and-play installation.“Skids allow us to build entire systems in parallel, test them off-site and install them as complete units,” says Julien Hogemans, production project manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>. “With as many as 20 skids on this project – from fuel and fresh water to AC and entertainment system – it makes the whole installation process faster and more efficient.”&nbsp;The engineers and naval architect were presented with a challenge of a different sort. Aluminium is a highly ductile metal, which makes it easier to cut and shape but more difficult to maintain longitudinal strength in an 81-metre sailing yacht where the loads from keel and rig on the hull are much higher than a motor yacht of equivalent size. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/11288/image/large-04da3c79dba98de70f22c5a61afe567d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/11288">Simply adding more metal doesn’t solve the problem, because if the structure is too rigid hairline fractures may appear. Instead, just enough flex has to be allowed to absorb the stresses and strains without becoming a ‘bendy’ boat. &nbsp;More longitudinal members were added and extra aluminium in places to ensure sufficient stiffness, especially amidships where boarding platforms are recessed into the hull on each side. But to compensate where the hull meets the deck, there are two bulwark doors instead of just one serving the boarding gangways. &nbsp;“As a result of the wave loads, the yacht is going to flex and that includes the superstructure, so for the first time the forward section of the coachroof is glued rather than welded to the deckhouse,” says Stefan Coronel, design &amp; engineering manager. “It means these large elements can deform independently of one another to reduce the risk of stress fractures and unwanted loads on the glass panels.” &nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/103762/image/large-585206f7428d8b80f8501d875c827a4d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103762">Instead of plasma-cutting aluminium panels, which can lead to heat-induced deformation, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has started milling them by CNC machine. This in turn has simplified the production and planning processes.“With milling there’s no heat, so no shrinkage, and you can prepare the edges ready for welding instead of grinding them,”&nbsp;says Julien Hogemans. “We can also add a lot of details during the milling, like perforations for deck winches instead of aligning and drilling them afterwards. It basically means more accurate and efficient assembly, a bit like a flatpack from Ikea.”&nbsp;Aluminium masts with carbon fibre booms and rod rigging were envisaged in the early stages of the design, but the owner later changed to carbon fibre masts and continuous Carbo-Link rigging to reduce weight and increase performance. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/103763/image/large-6b4970b7218cfaa7aab8ebf489cb5638.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103763">At the time of my visit, the three Panamax masts were undergoing ultra-sound tests at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>’s sister company, to check the thickness and quality of the lamination. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a> is able to build its 60-metre-plus carbon composite masts in one piece using out-of-autoclave manufacturing. This means that instead of bolting multiple sections together, the high modulus carbon fibres run uninterrupted from mast head to mast heel for optimal weight, strength and stiffness. The main mast on Sea Eagle II is also fitted with a crow’s nest operated by a hydraulic captive winch.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a> also developed the weather-tight sliding doors between the main cockpit and the interior, a complex piece of engineering with four individually operated moving glass sections. The whole structure was mounted on a frame in the factory awaiting water and inclination tests (to simulate heeling under sail) by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyds Ships (Company)">Lloyds</a> surveyors.&nbsp;Standing under the transom, the six-metre fixed keel, which took two weeks to fill with lead, provides a very tangible idea of the sheer size of Sea Eagle II. Her four-metre tall rudder – the largest ever built out of carbon composite – is fitted with sensors to measure the considerable forces acting on it. <img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/103767/image/large-8b9dd9a601dbfd2db136988b2091eec0.jpg?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&amp;X-Amz-Credential=AKIA52TLVJASOPFTPHWY%2F20230313%2Feu-west-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&amp;X-Amz-Date=20230313T201608Z&amp;X-Amz-Expires=900&amp;X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&amp;X-Amz-Signature=1287439912e40c0fd8803eb7f7101114066c18af9ad97ab04a774587674c5177" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103767">“Unlike masts, there’s not a lot of data available on rudders, so we tend to over-engineer them to be on the safe side,” says Arjo Spans.&nbsp;“By installing sensors we’ll be able to measure torque, deflection and other forces that will feed the design process in the future.”The interior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4404" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Whiteley Design (Company)">Mark Whiteley</a> is tastefully low-key and based on oak and Alpi walnut, a sustainable natural material made from reconstituted wood. For safety in a seaway, there are plenty of handrails and robust fiddles to hold on to.&nbsp;With a raised pilothouse in addition to the helm stations on the flybridge, there is a formal dining room/lounge on the main deck forward where you would usually expect to find the master suite. Instead, the owner prefers to occupy a relatively modest VIP suite, one of six guest cabins all on the lower deck. As the curtain has been drawn on this year’s summer season and superyachts start looking to warmer climates to spend the upcoming winter months, many vessels head into hibernation where they spend the cold season receiving maintenance after an intense cruising period. Several yachts have already headed north for such refit work and the Netherlands each year draws many high profile vessels during the maintenance season.&nbsp;One of the Netherlands’ largest players in the refit segment, Balk Shipyard, recently welcomed the 47-metre Benetti motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Africa I47.0m (154'2&quot;)">Africa I</a> for a short maintenance period after the yacht has spent its summer cruising Northern Europe. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Africa I47.0m (154'2&quot;)">Africa I</a>&nbsp;is expected to depart the shipyard again before the first snowfall is to hit the town of Urk when she will head south for warmer waters.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/52600/image/large-feb71c904a280d24c492015578915a8b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/52600">The 60-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2028" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ramble On Rose59.5m (195'3&quot;)">Ramble on Rose</a> from CRN is currently at Icon Yachts in Harlingen where she will remain until 1st April 2019. Works will include a complete exterior paint job and several changes to her interior including an upgraded bridge. Superyachts in Holland for winter refits

Royal Huisman is set to refit two of the world’s biggest sailing yachts, the 92.92m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/669" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="EOS92.92m (304'10&quot;)">EOS</a> and the 90-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Athena90.0m (295'3&quot;)">Athena</a>.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/44737/image/large-2ee4e13f2e431ebb4f09c62081456291.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/44737">The three-masted Lürssen schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/669" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="EOS92.92m (304'10&quot;)">EOS</a>, a regular customer at the Royal Huisman refit division, has signed a new contract with Huisfit, Royal Huisman dedicated refit department which offers a full service, from cosmetic repairs to hull and interior modifications, as well as system, machinery and rig overhauls. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/4872/image/large-9d93a78ba3fc08246024736fce9c6e6f.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/4872">Offered the choice of three refit locations, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/669" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="EOS92.92m (304'10&quot;)">EOS</a> will be refitted at Royal Huisman’s deepwater facility in Harlingen to ensure her refit is completed on schedule. Designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and Pieter Beeldsnijder, she has undergone extensive world cruising and is currently up for sale. Both superyachts will be refitted at Royal Huisman deep seawater location in the Netherlands for several months during the winter season. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/44741/image/large-476c7d25e3a4084afa7334b39120c60a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/44741">“There can be little doubt that returning clients are always ‘a shipyard’s best ambassador,’ ” commented Huisfit’s Bert Tromp, “so we are particularly pleased that this announcement concerns two of the world’s largest and most prestigious sailing yachts – both of them long-term Huisfit clients. Not only that, but we will have the privilege of working on the world’s 5th and 6th largest sailing yachts at the same time, which is quite an accolade for Huisfit.”&nbsp;

Royal Huisman to refit the 92m EOS and 90m Athena  

Here Jaap Gelling, Royal Huisman’s Technical Director, talks to us about the trailblazing restoration of the 39.56-metre J Class sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour</a>&nbsp;which took place in the 1980s and discusses its wider impact for the industry as a whole. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/21959/image/large-4303c47075fa655a33aff43ee8ca5905.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/21959">It would be hard to overstate the impact of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour&nbsp;</a>project on Royal Huisman. This was, by some distance, the largest yacht the yard had ever worked on. It was also a project that presented multiple technical challenges, albeit within the exciting context of one of the most famous racing yachts of the Golden Era. The international sailing community looked on with critical interest as to what would become of this true sailing legend.To recreate a famous yacht from a rusting steel plate hull is a lot more demanding than building from scratch – this was no refit, not even a renovation. Up to this point, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Velsheda</a> was the only J Class yacht that had been brought back from the brink but that featured little of the ambition that Elizabeth Meyer brought to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour.</a> The yard not only had to re-create the yacht but also to invent and then seamlessly incorporate sail handling and hotel systems that were never present on the original.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/39218/image/large-063077b0b9058eec2ad5c79755644f24.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/39218">These challenges played strongly to the engineering maestro in Wolter Huisman. But, with a formidable client like Elizabeth Meyer, he undoubtedly experienced a great deal of stress. The yard team, of course, were proud and delighted to be able to apply their talents and inventiveness to such a pioneering, high profile project. Many of those involved in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour</a> project still look back on it as one of the finest achievements of their career, if not the finest.&nbsp;Wolter’s pride in the accomplishment of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour&nbsp;</a>was absolute. He may have built some remarkable yachts, but this one capped them all – at least until his final masterpiece, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Athena90.0m (295'3&quot;)">Athena,</a> was launched in 2004, only narrowly nudging Endeavour into second place.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/39222/image/large-1129bace63facad509dc313166456c0e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/39222">Wider impacts<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour’</a>s success seriously enhanced the yard’s reputation for expertise in large and technically challenging projects. In particular, it showed owners and their teams there were now no real limits to the size of their future sailing yachts. The bespoke sail handling systems developed for Endeavour, enabling a large and powerful yacht to be sailed by a relatively small crew, could apply to any yacht they dreamed of. This recognition led directly to the extraordinary increase in scale of sailing superyachts that has followed over the years ever since.This in turn had a major impact on the industry at large, with naval architects, designers and project managers, as well as yards, all experiencing a very rewarding step-change in the status and scope of their professional work.&nbsp;Endeavour’s greatest impact, perhaps, was to give credibility to the establishment of the new J Class Association. It demonstrated there really could be a future for this almost-extinct class. There can be no question that, without Elizabeth Meyer’s vision and determination and the glorious example of the re-created <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour,</a> we would not have nine J’s racing today – more than were ever on the water together during the Golden Age.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/39224/image/large-ccc13cb215d98a97de68ea5a08ba7754.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/39224">One thing led to another. Royal Huisman’s serial client Dr Jim Clark (who also built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/595" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hyperion47.42m (155'7&quot;)">Hyperion</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Athena90.0m (295'3&quot;)">Athena</a>) asked the yard to re-create&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5918" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour II 49.9m (163'9&quot;)">Endeavour II,</a> relishing the idea of optimising the performance of a spectacular design using the materials and technologies permitted by the new J Class Association rules. The result was Hanuman, a widely admired J2 that is very successful on the race track. This momentum continued with the re-creation of other lost Js and even the first-time build of others that had existed only as plans. It is truly a new Golden Age for Js when several commentators at last year’s America’s Cup Regatta in Bermuda noted that the J Class event had eclipsed that of the AC35s.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/21970/image/large-b5b0e957a1c2d29492dc8174d2e291eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/21970"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour</a> will always be part of the cultural fabric of Royal Huisman. It is a source of considerable pride as a pioneering achievement in its day, but the lessons learned continue to inform the way the yard works today. &nbsp;Interior space planning for systems and machinery, as well as accommodation, was of immense importance in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour&nbsp;</a>- a vessel with fine ends and relatively low hull volume.&nbsp;The technologies and disciplines applied then have been constantly refined ever since to optimise the quality, functionality and serviceability of systems installations and the luxury and comfort of the accommodation in every Huisman yacht interior. On Spirit of Tradition (or classic) yachts, exacting joinery techniques and finishing processes have been evolved to create new interiors that appear to be restorations from an earlier era.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/11649/image/large-ca8f915aa88dd175a20ca6d9e905cc91.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/11649"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/11648/image/large-9aa98906108d975407c2227f6a7d0615.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/11648"> The skills and resources applied to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour</a> by Royal Huisman have, themselves, evolved into the highly successful ‘Huisfit’ operation, specialising in superyacht refit, repair and renewal. A current, high profile Huisfit project is the complete rebuild, over two years, of Nathaniel Herreshoff’s famous 109ft schooner, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5247" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vagrant39.0m (127'11&quot;)">Vagrant</a>, built in 1913. The J-Class Endeavour and Royal Huisman

Jonathan Beckett is the man at the helm of one of the most trusted superyacht brokerage firms in the world: Burgess. Joining the late company founder, Nigel Burgess, in the early 80s, it was not the desire to sell big boats that drew Beckett to the world of selling superyachts, but rather a love for sailing. Indulging in this passion fresh out of high school sailing on 55’ Sparkman &amp; Stephens ketch in the Caribbean, when Jonathan returned to Europe, he quickly realised that the yacht life was the only life for him and the brokerage world beckoned.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/32225/image/large-f3c4249ec1816ea586b1340d7ee9e98c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32225">Regardless of a deep-seated passion for sailing from the CEO - a passion which was very much shared with the founder of the company - unsurprisingly, sailing yachts are in the vast minority of Burgess’ sales and charter deals. This, however, does not concern Beckett. In fact, contrary to the widespread belief that the sailing yacht market is in dire straits, Beckett notes that interest in this specialised sector is growing. In fact, he notes, it is the sailing yachts rather than the motor yachts that are really shaking things up in the industry: “Perhaps more so than motor yachts, a number of sailing yachts will also go down in the history books of yachting for being game changers,” he says. “Whether it’s the 88-metre&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)">Maltese Falcon</a>, the 106-metre&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.0m (347'9&quot;)">Black Pearl&nbsp;</a>or the 142.8-metre&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4450" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sailing Yacht A142.81m (468'6&quot;)">Sailing Yacht A</a>, these yachts are visionary design statements which have stopped the superyacht industry in its tracks – and that doesn’t happen very easily!”Here we hear more about Beckett’s insight into the sailing yacht market, and the future of the Burgess brand.&nbsp;You are CEO at Burgess and very much a client facing broker, spending the majority of your time actually selling yachts. Is there such a thing as a typical deal?&nbsp;I am very much a travelling salesman - selling yachts and selling the Burgess brand. On average, I travel twice a week. Just this week, for example, I was in Monaco last weekend, London on Monday and Tuesday, Amsterdam on Wednesday, London again on Thursday and then Singapore Friday. And now I will travel on to Australia on Sunday! But that is what I do.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/34966/image/large-445c229206a36a6bbdb7acd9f2a6e76e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34966">I believe I learned the trade from the best: Nigel Burgess. We worked together for 11 years before ‎he died. He quickly taught me that the most important thing with any client is face time. You have to have face time to build a relationship - and this is a business that is all about relationships. A typical deal is like combining a marathon run with an obstacle course - all conducted on paper-thin ice! Joking aside, a typical deal will be one where the seller feels he isn't getting enough, the buyer feels he is paying a bit too much and the broker is very carefully trying to pull both sides together‎.After almost four decades working in the industry, what are your thoughts on the sailing yacht market and how it has changed over time?The sailing yacht market - meaning new construction, sales and charter - has always been a much smaller but much more specialised market than the motor yacht market. There are more than 10 large motor yachts to every large sailing yacht‎. It would be rare for a large motor yacht client (purchase or charter) to ‘switch’ to a sailing yacht, although it has been known to happen! Sailing yacht owners, buyers and charterers tend to be quite experienced sailing people who have a keen interest and knowledge of sailing yachts and the sea - and are passionate about sailing.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/7884/image/large-3ff44ce0b580955bb7b80b9160947086.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7884">If anything, I think that there is more interest in sailing yachts now than there was back in my early days in 1980/1. There was a revolution of new modern designs, easy to handle sailing systems and much more modern accommodation in the 80s and 90s through to the present day. And, with this, came the opening of quite a number of new specialised sailing yacht shipyards taking centre stage, such as Perini Navi, Vitters, Alloy Yachts, Fitzroy – and, of course, the modernisation of such iconic shipyards as Royal Huisman and Jongert. Regrettably, Alloy and Fitzroy are no longer with us but they were incredibly prolific in the early years and were very much responsible for whetting the appetites of clients to build modern, aesthetically pleasing, high-performance sailing yachts with a level of luxury that hadn’t been seen on sailing yachts before.Having been part of Burgess since its early days, tell us about one of the most memorable deals you’ve closed?&nbsp;I am in my 38th year here at Burgess. In that time you might think that I've seen it all - but I am certain that I haven't. Not at all! My most memorable deals are not really our largest sales - but these ones were special for me: the 71.1-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Sarina</a> (now Haida 1929), sold in 1981; the 57-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/236" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fleurtje57.0m (187'0&quot;)">Argonaftis</a> (now Fleurtje), sold in 1984; the 86-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/297" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kingdom 5KR86.0m (282'2&quot;)">Nabila</a> (now Kingdom 5KR), sold in 1987, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)">Maltese Falcon</a>, sold in 2009.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/19605/image/large-b8d86c2ff7d9819162f88a83347a836e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19605">The story of the 1987 sale of Nabila to Donald Trump is very well known, coming in at $14 million more than the previous largest sale of Burgess. How did this deal solidify Burgess’ position as a leader in the sale of large yachts?&nbsp;This was an exciting deal - and a very exciting time for this company and for the industry at ‎large. But actually, she was not only the largest sale by Burgess at the time, but she was $14 million more than any previous brokerage transaction ever. This really was the advent of superyachts as we know them today.&nbsp;It was particularly pleasing because I remember cutting Donald Trump's name out of a newspaper here in London‎ and adding him to our client list (which probably only numbered 300 people in those days!). A year later we closed the largest yacht sale ever with him! Nabila was an iconic and very famous yacht back in those days and Donald was a ‘self-promoter’ - so the publicity surrounding this sale and ongoing ownership was something else! We retained the management of the yacht - renamed Trump Princess&nbsp;- and had monthly meetings with him in New York. We sold the yacht on four years later to HRH Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz-Al-Saud from Saudi Arabia, who still owns the yacht today.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/18015/image/large-48ee854a91ce677af97627e2dbd7c7d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/18015">There have, of course, been other significant milestones, which all solidify our leading position. One could never have predicted 30 years ago that the industry would evolve in quite the way it has and we have been involved with a number of ground-breaking new builds as owners’ project managers over the last few years: the world’s largest yacht, the 180-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4638" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azzam180.61m (592'7&quot;)">Azzam</a>; the world’s largest yacht by gross tonnage, the 156-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)">Dilbar</a>; and the largest yacht built to date in the Netherlands, the 110-metre Jubilee. These are very technically complex projects and I am immensely proud of our in-house team of naval architects and specialised marine/electrical engineers who carry these challenging builds from clean sheet of paper to delivery. &nbsp; <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/28769/image/large-dc8a0d4c8acedaa088c81180fefae172.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28769">$30 million in the 80s was an almost unprecedented price for a yacht, though we have since seen prices in yachting rise almost exponentially. Some think the industry is effectively pricing ourselves out of business. Do you see this as an issue?&nbsp;$30 million in 1987 was a record-breaking price - almost double the value of any previous brokerage deal. So it was a big deal. Today $30 million will still buy you a nice yacht - but not a ‘top of the market’ yacht. Prices have risen enormously - but then so has the size and complexity of yachts. The top yachts today are truly floating palaces on the water with extraordinary features and very complex systems. To break it down, in 1987, $30 million bought you the biggest and best yacht in the world. In 2018, you would need to pay in the region of $600 - 700 million to buy the biggest and best yacht in the world… I’m not sure the pricing is an ‘issue’ rather than an organic progression as the vessels themselves have gotten more complex with extremely high standards.&nbsp;You are President and founding member of the Large Yacht Brokers Association, as well former President and board member of MYBA. What is the importance of such organisations?&nbsp;What we have learned from trade associations - be it MYBA or LYBRA - is that they bring industry players together to produce industry standards - such as the standard MYBA Charter Agreement and the standard MYBA Sale &amp; Purchase Agreement. We also discuss common issues, and they create a forum for grievances to be aired. LYBRA is an association of the larger yacht brokerage companies - and the demonstrable benefit here is having company owners and/or CEOs all sitting around the table together - getting to know each other well - and having the confidence to discuss ‘big picture’ industry issues that affect all of us.You’ve talked previously about families with young children being the key demographic that yachting should market to, though this is a decidedly long-term plan for longevity. What can we do in the short term?&nbsp;This is a very good question and no one has the definitive answer. Charter is most definitely a great entry gateway into yachting, and the number of people who can afford to charter but have no clue it even exists as a vacation must be encouraged to try it! We are members of the Superyacht Life Foundation, which is all about promoting the lifestyle of yachting rather than promoting‎ yacht purchase or yacht charter specifically.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/8710/image/large-36a1d64cfe4989718de55a8c0818f001.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/8710">It would be nice if we could extend the cruising seasons… but I don't see this happening anytime soon. The opening up of new destinations for chartering is something many of us are working on and is a very interesting challenge. It’s also a daunting one as market forces are quite entrenched. With environmental issues likely to be at the forefront for some years to come, we could well also see a resurgence of heightened interest in sailing yachts from charterers and there are also some exceptional purchase opportunities currently on the market at very interesting price levels. At the moment, for example, we are listing the stunning 90-metre three-masted schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Athena90.0m (295'3&quot;)">Athena</a> and the 54.6-metre modern classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2411" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marie54.64m (179'3&quot;)">Marie</a> for sale and charter, as well as the 65.3-metre vintage schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creole65.3m (214'3&quot;)">Creole</a> for charter. &nbsp;&nbsp;Do you think consolidation is the answer to progressing the superyacht industry?&nbsp;There is room for everyone in this industry - but the way we do business will change. When change starts to kick in, it will happen quickly - and we are right on the cusp of that now. I am certain that we will see a lot of consolidation as we move ahead… it just makes sense. In 7 years time when we look back to today, the players will be different and the landscape will be different. This is an exciting time for Burgess and for the industry - and I am really looking forward to the challenges ahead.What do the next 10 years look like for Burgess?The next 10 years at Burgess are looking good! ‎Will I still be here? Definitely! But I will be in a different role - which I see as more of a guidance and mentoring role. The future of Burgess belongs to the next generation and it is our job to ensure a careful handing down of roles and responsibilities. At Burgess, we have a lot of young people - many of whom have already been with us for quite a long time (for example 35-year-olds who have been with us for 10+ years and 45-year-olds who have been with us for between 15-22 years). These young people are well trained, experienced and fiercely loyal, and it is going to be a pleasure to watch them take over the reigns of the company in the years to come. When it comes to sailing superyachts there are several omnipresent names that spring to mind, and few could argue that Dykstra Naval Architects isn’t one of them. Founded by Gerard Dykstra in 1969, over the past half a century the team has grown and expanded, collaborating on such iconic designs such as Nobiskrug’s 142.8-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4450" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sailing Yacht A142.81m (468'6&quot;)">Sailing Yacht A</a>, Oceanco’s newly delivered 106-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.0m (347'9&quot;)">Black Pearl</a>, the 90-metre Royal Huisman built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Athena90.0m (295'3&quot;)">Athena</a>, the 88-metre Perini Navi <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)">Maltese Falcon</a>, and an impressive seven of the J Class new builds and restorations.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/32235/image/large-18c0a6d0eaf132dc61985c266bc9bc33.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32235">certainly an imposing portfolio, here we catch up with Managing Director, Thys Nikkels, who took over the helm from Gerard in 2004, to hear about the future of the sailing yacht market and the challenges involved with building the most super sailing superyachts in the world.&nbsp;Tell me about your professional journey in Dykstra.&nbsp;I was more or less born with a pencil in my hand, sketching sailing boats. So for me, there was never going to be any other option but to design sailing yachts. Upon completion of my naval architecture and marine engineering degree, I joined Dykstra in 1991. I was the first employee of Gerard, actually. In the beginning, Dykstra incorporated two disciplines: yachting and commercial shipping. In ‘94 we decided to largely focus our energies into yachting.&nbsp;I started the process of taking over the company in 2000, and the transition was completed by 2004. Gerard then jumped straight into building his own boat, an aluminium 53 footer called Besteaver, and he and his wife have had some great times on the boat cruising around. He now spends around 10% of his time in the office, sharing his expertise with the team and working on the projects that he feels particularly attracted to!&nbsp;The Maltese Falcon, Black Pearl and&nbsp;Sailing Yacht A are easily three of the world’s most talked about superyachts. Why is Dykstra the go-to naval architecture and design firm for these unique projects?&nbsp;Well, we’re open to new ideas for one, and certainly do not shy away from challenges. If a client has a crazy idea, we investigate before we make a decision if it really is crazy or not. This involves a lot of different people that take you on a fantastic voyage to the ultimate end result. The Maltese Falcon, for example, was a six-year process. We like that at Dykstra, the variation in our projects keeps our whole team motivated. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/13957/image/large-f1be48d64f7e33aa42e276b0cd12f71e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13957"> <img src="/uploads/store/photo/7864/image/large-63c3ff3c4fbab0ba3929c698e6cbb72a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7864">In terms of projects currently in build, Project 400 - the 81m at Royal Huisman - is scheduled for delivery to her Asian owner in 2020. Tell us more about this project.&nbsp;For us, Project 400 is one of the first with a more modern styling, where we are allowed to optimise on sailing performance and less on the aesthetics of a long, classic hull, so there’s a little more freedom than usual which is great. For a large Bermudan schooner like Project 400 you also need to look at different kinds of sail handling systems and automation - more so than with a smaller boat. For yachts like Black Pearl or A, it’s another step further.&nbsp;Project 400 won’t be set up for regattas, and she will be a very private boat. We’re seeing that more and more with our clients… I think it’s in the DNA of the sailor to be more interested in being at one with nature and visiting beautiful destinations with their family and friends.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/11290/image/large-cc43c0cf075c9830fff865ff89bc3c9e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/11290"> In early 2016, you announced a collaboration with Rapsody Yachts, the 35m Rapsody R110. Why did you venture into the motor yacht world?Well, it was definitely a side step from the usual! We are always interested in undertaking these side step projects: as long as they are fun to do. It really helps to keep everyone in the team enthusiastic - that variation, again. But for the R110, we were collaborating with Rapsody on a sailing yacht, and they approached us with a client interested in a new motor yacht. It piqued our interest, so we were given relatively free reign to come up with whatever we wanted. The end result is sexy, cool boat… almost like a blown-up sports yacht and completely different from what we’ve ever done before.&nbsp;It seems that more sailing-specific professionals are also diversifying, perhaps in a response to the dwindling numbers of new sailing superyachts being commissioned?Well, in regards to the numbers, I don’t have a clue why they are so low right now. Especially when considering the push into sustainable, green future. Maybe clients do not know what is possible… in which case it is our responsibility to better inform them of the advantages of sailing versus motor. There are pros and cons to both, and we need to highlight that more.&nbsp;Would it be interesting to push the regatta side of owning a sailing yacht?Regattas are a tricky one… it’s a fantastic event to be part of, but most of the time, yachts that are built for racing are only racing in a limited way compared to what the boat does for the rest of the year. We don’t want to push anyone towards regattas. It’s about listening to your client. The whole team here at Dykstra, of course, loves regattas, and we’re lucky that a number of our boats are regular participants who invite us along for the ride!<img src="/uploads/store/photo/21957/image/large-7cdd145b675366a907e663d29262e392.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/21957">Dykstra has worked on some of the world’s biggest sailing yachts. What are the challenges involved with these supersized sailing vessels?&nbsp;The challenges are abundant, but in terms of the challenges posed to our clients when they take delivery, well, you actually do less sailing on bigger sailing yachts. The size of the rig is so substantial, that it takes a lot of effort to set sail. On a 60-metre+ boat, you need some real power with the sails. I think that’s our job, to make that effort as minimum as possible and to make it possible for the yacht to go sailing easily. That’s why Maltese Falcon and Black Pearl are such a success because they can sail from anchor to anchor with just one person. If you are doing the night watch and think, ‘Hey! The breeze is a good speed and the right angle, let’s unfurl a couple of sails,’ then they can do it. The challenge of actually sailing less can be countered with technical innovation, and that’s what we want to achieve with our large projects.&nbsp;Which projects can we already see this on?For Sailing Yacht A, the brief was to have a really special sail area. So our challenge was not to design an exceptionally tall mast or big sail, it was in thinking of a way to make this vast vessel sailable for the crew. So we needed to think about what kind of automation or software needed to be involved to actually hoist the sails and allow them to go sailing! There are too many yachts around that never go sailing - it’s just about functionality.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/15524/image/large-b5bb0e6cbfe34c1db64aaf82b2a792ed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15524"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/15522/image/large-04a206417ff864cbd394fc4bb06238ba.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15522">What’s on your drawing boards right now?&nbsp;I’m very happy to say that the order book is full for at least two years with sailing yachts, ranging from 40-metres to… let’s just say ‘big’! We’ve also been working generally on the issue of sustainability for a number of years, as well as on the latest Greenpeace boat, Rainbow Warrior III. Diesel-electric drive systems for efficiency mean that generators do not have to be running all the time, for example. Black Pearl&nbsp;can sail around and regenerate power as she goes. And we’re very happy to be working on the&nbsp;Sea Bridge One project for the fantastic non-profit charity, Sea Mercy!If people build a superyacht and say they want to do it in an environmental way, don’t start looking into LED lights or reclaimed energy from your shower or putting the air conditioning a couple of degrees lower. Go sailing. Athena was built by Royal Huisman in 2004 to a design by the late Pieter Beeldsnijder, with naval architecture by Dykstra. For now, Athena holds on to her spot as the second largest private sailing yacht in operation until the 106-metre project Y712 and 142.8-metre Sailing Yacht A are delivered later this year. Athena was built for an experienced yachtsman and is often seen around the superyacht racing circuit, sometimes along with her owner’s high-performance sailing yacht, Comanche.

Think of quality, custom-crafted, Dutch-built sailing yachts and Royal Huisman immediately springs to mind. Operating at the top of a fiercely competitive market segment driven by owners in search of the latest in innovation, comfort, and safety, and, indeed, one that is facing the struggles of a declining interest from today’s pool of superyacht owners, one can truly understand why the shipyard’s overpowering can-do attitude has become so important. To, not only survive, but also excel in this sector and retain its pedigree that is echoed in the Royal stamp of approval that the shipyard carries, Royal Huisman has adapted to and managed to breach the field of superyacht refits like no other Dutch yard has. We met up with the team that is keeping this ship pointing in the right direction to uncover the latest developments in the former fishing town of Vollenhove.

It’s a surprisingly sunny and pleasant December morning as I am guided through the bustling build and assembly halls of the Royal Huisman shipyard. This is what Santa’s workshop must look like, I tell myself, as we enter the in-house carpentry division and hit by that familiar, warming smell of timber. The shipyard is in overdrive. Two new-build projects need to be delivered within the next 12 months and the start of the facility’s largest undertaking yet, the recently-signed 81-metre Project 400, is just around the corner.

It wasn’t always like this, though, when operations first started in the town of Ronduite in 1884. For three generations, the company spent its time constructing wooden sailing boats for the region’s fisherman. Like many shipyards in the area, when the Zuiderzee was cut off and the fishing industry virtually disappeared overnight, the company started to shift their focus to recreational vessels and yachts. The sailing yacht racing scene was next with projects commissioned to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Race (now Volvo Ocean Race), and it was Wolter Huisman - the grandson of Royal Huisman’s founder and face of the company for several decades - who steered the company to set its sights firmly on the luxury yachting scene, with tens of sail and motor yachts delivered to date.

The Huisman name was at the centre of this operation for over a century and it has only been over the last few years that the family has stepped back from the day-to-day running of the shipyard and taken on a more ambassadorial role. Today the face of the company is carried through the shipyard staff and family of Royal Huisman owners, according to Managing Director, Roemer Boogaard. “The face of Royal Huisman was and will always be the workforce of the shipyard, who all share the same passion for perfection. Together with the owners and their teams we create exceptional yachts, that are unique in their design and quality.”

2017 will be a busy year for the shipyard as two quite different 50+ metre sailing yachts will be rolling out of its sheds. The first, Ngoni. This ‘Beast’ measuring 58-metres is set to be one of the most anticipated yachts of the year with her next-level onboard systems and racing-attack prowess. The legendary Ed Dubois designer tag she wears will make her all the more special - a fact that Boogaard is very much aware of. “We are very proud that we are building Ngoni,” he says. “Not only because she is Ed’s last superyacht project, but also because she is a perfect example of innovative design, efficiency in tandem with simplicity, performance without compromising accommodation, clever engineering and bold styling – she is going to be stunning and iconic. We like to think that Ed would have been as proud as we are.”

As important is the signing of the new contemporary schooner project, as she is known to the outside world, or Project 400 amongst shipyard staff. This 81-metre commissioned by an Asian client is set to test Royal Huisman’s engineering team and build crew to the limit. For Commercial Manager, Britta Bunkenburg, it’s a challenge they are ready for but also one she feels the industry is in desperate need of. “It is fantastic news for us. It proves what type of product we are capable of delivering, and that owners trust us to build these types of yachts. But as important, it serves as a positive sign for the state of the sailing yacht market. Motor yachts are dominating the luxury superyacht sector and for a large sailing yacht such as Project 400 to be ordered will certainly have an encouraging effect on the sailing yacht market.”

Boogaard agrees, and openly discusses the shipyard’s plans to protect not only the sailing yacht industry, but also the shipyard’s interests. “The best strategy to increase the market share of sailing yachts is to continue promoting, selling and building sailing yachts. However, as we are all fully aware, the market is indeed changing – the requirements for a yacht are now different which has impacted the purchasing behaviour. As a shipyard we try to adapt to these changes without forgetting our heritage.”

One of these adaptations is the establishing of a dedicated after sales and refit department catered not only to the Royal Huisman fleet, but indeed any yacht, motor or sail, wishing to receive a northern European-standard superyacht makeover. This step was officially taken in 2010 when the mighty 91-metre Lürssen sailing yacht EOS arrived at Huisfit for the first time for an intensive period of maintenance and cosmetic works. The 72-metre motor yacht Skat soon followed and the shipyard’s skills were proven when the Atlantic speedster, Mari-Cha IV, emerged last year from an intensive rebuild as the stealthy Samurai.

Today Huisfit has become a vital part of the business for Royal Huisman, and although humbly deemed an in-house service by the company, has truly grown to become recognised as a brand on its own.

These organic developments over the past five years would naturally lead to room for expansion at some point, and the recently-announced deep water facility access in Emden, Germany, is a result of that growth. The man in charge of Huisfit operations, Bert Tromp, tells us more. “It was at the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show when the team of Emden Dockyard came to us and spoke about the location. Soon after we received an enquiry from Athena who was interested in a possible refit. This made us consider the offer from Emden and we visited the shipyard. We were very impressed by the facilities.”

So impressed, in fact, that six months later Huisfit now holds exclusive access to over 300,000 square metres of facility space that includes two enormous dry docks able to accommodate vessels well over 120 metres in length and covered refit facilities. But as Tromp explains, it was a combination of elements that made the decision to partner with Emden a no-brainer. “We did our research in the Netherlands,” he says. “We looked at a few locations but none ticked all the boxes, and we would be limited in some form at each of the sites we visited. Emden offers us nearly unrestricted capabilities. Not only in terms of space, but also the ability to cater to more than one project at a time along with much needed planning security. With the rising demand which we have been receiving at Huisfit, we felt that having that security that allows us to operate with complete flexibility was crucial.”

But was ‘exporting’ the trusted Royal Huisman brand across the border ever an issue? “It was never a hindrance, no,” explains Bunkenburg. “The location, first of all, is the same distance as reaching certain areas within the Netherlands. In today’s age the borders between countries, especially in northern Europe, are so fluid. All operations will be overseen and largely carried out by the Royal Huisman team, and the surrounding area allows us to draw on a very large pool of highly skilled sub-contractors to deliver a northern European service.”

Insight: Why 2017 is the year of Royal Huisman

The past weekend saw one of the busiest periods of superyacht operations for the Mediterranean gateway port of Gibraltar, as a total of 20 superyachts were recorded making use of the port’s facilities. An impressive number of 19 superyachts were at one stage either alongside the new deep water Mid Harbours Marina, private marinas, or in the anchorage outside the port simultaneously.

It is nothing new for these superyachts to pull over for a pit stop in Gibraltar, but according to Port CEO and Captain, Bob Sanguinetti, “the new berths at Mid Harbours Marina, improved superstructure, competitively priced fuel, and a concerted marketing effort,” all contributed to the recent increase in activity in the port. The peak in activity is of course a direct result of the annual migration of superyachts heading south across the Atlantic where a busy winter cruising season awaits.

The high volume Amels superyacht Boadicea was built by the Dutch shipyard in 1999. Since then the yacht has undergone a series of intensive refit and rebuild projects. One of the coolest yachts delivered this year, and one of the latest additions to the superyacht sales fleet has to be the 107-metre Ulysses. Custom built by Norwegian shipyard Kleven for an experienced yachtsman, Ulysses has been making headlines with her utilitarian exterior and world-cruising capabilities. Panakeia

The 45.8 metre Panakeia was built by Astondoa in 2008 as Amaranta P. The exterior lines of the luxury motor yacht were designed by the shipyard itself and she features an interior by Cristiano Gatto. The steel hulled displacement motor yacht is powered by twin 2,038hp MTU 16V 4000 M61R diesel engines, which enable her to achieve a top speed of 16 knots, cruising speed of 13 knots and a range of 3,500 nautical miles.

Panakeia will be on display in Monaco through Ocean Independence, and is offered for sale at €15,500,000.

Athena

The longest yacht on display in Monaco this year will be the 90 metre sailing yacht Athena. As one of the largest sailing yachts in the world, Athena was custom built by Royal Huisman in 2004 to a design by the late Pieter Beeldsnijder.

Athena is listed for sale through Burgess at $69,000,000.

So’Mar

Launched by the Turkish shipyard Tansu Yachts in 2014 is the 37.6 metre superyacht So’Mar. Constructed with a wooden hull and superstructure, she features naval architecture by the renowned studio Diana Yacht Design, whilst her interior and exterior design was undertaken in-house by the shipyard. Accommodation is provided for up to eight guests in total, and one of the vessels most notable features is the exclusive owner’s deck located on the upper aft - a feature which is usually reserved for much larger yachts.

So’Mar will be on display through Y.CO in Monaco this year.

Suerte

Delivered just ahead of the 2015 Monaco yacht Show, the 69 metre Suerte was built by the Italian shipyard Tankoa Yachts, featuring naval architecture by Ruggiero, whilst the renowned Francesco Paszkowski undertook her exterior design. Suerte comprises of 1,400 Gross Tons and is constructed with a high tensile steel fore section.

Delivered in 2010, the Dutch built superyacht was designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon with an interior Studio Linse. Icon offers a bright and spacious interior and accommodates 12 guests in six cabins, and has an excellent charter record. The yacht was lengthened by five metres and today measures 68 metres. The refit, which took just six months, has created a larger main aft deck, a larger beach club, and created space for a 5-metre long infinity swimming pool, which features glass elements to the front and stern above the transom, and large lounging areas either side.

Asking €56,500,000, Icon is for sale through Camper &amp; Nicholsons.

Oceana

Following her acquisition in May last year, the 1991-built Oceanfast superyacht Oceana is now back on the market, ready to be passed on to a value-seeking and passionate superyacht owner. Previously known as Obsession, Oceana is the result of a fantastic Jon Bannenberg design, beautifully executed by the Australian shipyard. Her Aileen Rodriguez interior is a bright and comfortable affair with light woods, white lacquered surfaces and soothing veneers making these spaces feel very airy and spacious.

Oceana is jointly listed for sale through Edmiston and Burgess in Monaco this year, offered at €8,900,000.

Martha Ann

The 70-metre superyacht Martha Ann shares a very similar exterior design with sisters Titania and Saint Nicolas, all of whom were ordered by the same client from the German shipyard. All three vessels’ designs are the work of Espen Oeino, with each featuring an extraordinary volume for its size. Martha Ann can comfortably accommodate 12 guests over six staterooms, looked after by her crew of 20. Her classic Zuretti interior is exquisite. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, this Lürssen superyacht has a top speed of 15.5 knots and a range of 4,000 nm.

What’s for sale in Monaco this year?

Picture perfect conditions greeted the fleet of sailing yachts at the start line on race day 2 of the St Barths Bucket Regatta. Wind speeds of 14 – 17 knots made for excellent Caribbean sailing conditions allowing the group to enjoy fun, yet fast sailing around the 25 nm course. The team from <a href="http://www.breedmedia.com/" target="_blank">Breed Media</a> is on the water and in the air at the regatta and shared these incredible images with us.

In the J Class races, <a href="#managed-by-application" target="_blank" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a> managed to escape the fast <a href="#managed-by-application" target="_blank" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251">Velsheda</a> with less than 200 metres separating the two at the end. <a href="#managed-by-application" target="_blank" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/367">Rosehearty</a> once again crossed the line ahead of her class competitors and is looking strong for a class win comes Sunday. The new kid on the block, Vitter’s 46m <a href="#managed-by-application" target="_blank" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5560">Unfurled</a>, had to settle with a 4th place finish following her performance on Friday that earned her top spot in the first race. Perini Navi’s <a href="#managed-by-application" target="_blank" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/44">P2</a> was looking particularly good on the water today, and managed to cross the line first ahead of <a href="#managed-by-application" target="_blank" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4019">Ganesha</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" target="_blank" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1626">Lady B</a> in Class B.

A fleet of nearly 40 sailing yachts jostled at the start line off the island of St Baths yesterday for the start of the oldest annual sailing regatta in the world. Day 1 of the 2016 St Barths Bucket saw the field take on a 20+ nm course around the island. Our friends at <a href="http://www.breedmedia.com/" target="_blank">Breed Media</a> is on the ground this week, and sent us these exclusive images.

In Class A it was Vitter’s brand new <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5560">Unfurled</a> that took the honours, outrunning <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1163">Visione</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4304">Nilaya</a> with mere seconds separating the top three. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/367">Rosehearty</a> once again proved to be the fastest between her Perini Navi sisters, holding on to a lead in Class E over Fritzroy's <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3355">Ohana</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4146">Seahawk</a>. The largest yacht in the field, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288">Athena</a>, was unable to take part on Day 1.

Yesterday was the second day of racing for the J Class fleet. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a> was the first across the line in race 1, with <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251">Velsheda</a> returning the favour yesterday. The Holland Jachtbouw-built <a href="#managed-by-application" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2632">Topaz</a> finished last in both races, but is not yet out of the race. With tight race times and two further races remaining, anything can happen in this exciting class.

Taking place each year around the jet-set Caribbean island of St Barths, today will see the start of four days of racing where a fleet of nearly 40 yachts – ranging from 23 to 90 metres - battle in six different classes in the waters around the island of St Barthelemy. Having started over 20 years ago, the annual St Barths Bucket Regatta is one of the most prestigious yacht racing events on the winter racing calendar, and draws to a close on Sunday 20th March.

This year sees the return of the magical J’s as a class to the regatta for the first time since 2013, who will get to enjoy four days of racing, as apposed to the three days of racing for the remainder of the fleet. Three J Class yachts are to meet at the starting line today, including Ranger (J5), Velsheda (J7), and the much anticipated, and latest addition to the J Cass fleet, Topaz (J7).

The handicapper (ORC) will structure the race start as to have each class finish together (as apposed to the entire fleet) with an estimated gap of 8 – 10 minutes separating each class. The 90 metre Royal Huisman yacht Athena will be the largest yacht in the fleet this year, with a diversity of other shipyards being represented including Perini Navi, Vitters, Nautors Swan, Southern Wind, Alloy Yachts, Holland Jachtbouw, Baltic, and Pendennis to name a few. Event sponsor Gaastra, the renowned sailing apparel house, will again ensure competitors are able to be kitted out in some of the best clothing on the market.

St Barths Bucket Regatta kicks off today

Set to kick off on Saturday 26 December 2015, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will see an international fleet of 110 yachts from 28 nations gather at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney to embark on the iconic yacht race that covers over 628 nm to reach Hobart on the Tasman Island. Yachts preparing for 71st Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

Athena won’t hold on to her title as the second largest sailing yacht for much longer however, as the 142.8m Sailing Yacht A is expected to be delivered in 2016, followed by the 106m Solar. Taking advantage of a stopover in the Mediterranean during her busy cruising schedule, the Huisfit team travelled to Palma to oversee the overhaul that included refreshing her interior varnish work, updating the electrical systems, and inspecting her rod rigging.The last announcement from the Huisfit team is that the 55 metre ketch Adèle has already booked a slot for next winter in Vollenhove. Projects underway at Royal Huisman’s refit division, Huisfit

A new company has been launched in order to cater to transient superyachts carrying pets on board. Founded by Dr Siobhan Brade, Superyacht Vet Service was begun after Brade worked on several yachts as a veterinary advisor, including the 42 metre The Big Blue and the 90 metre Athena. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150878/image/large-fe2f515c6392d460b36872e8ddfbc8fe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150878">A member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the New Zealand Veterinary Council Register, Brade worked in a small animal practice before moving to work with superyachts. With a wide knowledge of animal import processes and a strong understanding of the superyacht industry, Brade aims to deliver a quick-response and discrete service.With many countries having very different immigration and pet quarantine requirements, ensuring that all the inoculation and import demands of a multi-country itinerary are met can be a challenging and time consuming process. Brade comments, “Something as simple as one missed vaccination can be enough to deny a pet entry into a country for up to a year, resulting in costly changes to cruising schedules. Our work with yachts ensures a smooth temporary import process for their animals, as well as providing veterinary support and advice for all countries being travelled through.”The company offers set packages for yachts with pets, as well as bespoke support options. Services include one off advice, country risk assessments, liaising with local authorities, inoculation and veterinary inspection schedules, as well as on-board veterinary support and supervision during yacht based quarantine periods. New bespoke veterinary service launched to superyacht industry

With four maintenance and renewal projects conducted in Holland (Flyer One, Samurai, Heartbeat, Juliet) and a fifth carried out by the Huisfit team in Antibes (Borkumriff IV), it has been busy for Royal Huisman’s refit department so far this year, and it doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon. Four upcoming projects include Skat and Hyperion, who both recently arrived in Holland to start their refit programmes, with Huisfit also announcing that Athena and Adèle will be undergoing work by the Huisfit team.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150408/image/large-22e9b377c2f45bac2ae969d6d8fe2e33.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150408">Following on from her visit to Harlingen in 2012, the owner and captain of the 71 metre Lürssen motoryacht, Skat has recently arrived at the Huisfit facilities. Work on the project has commenced and includes: the servicing of the main engines and gensets, systems updates, new teak decking for all decks, painting of the hull and superstructure, the servicing of all transom doors, passarelle, side boarding platforms, cranes, etc. and the overhaul of complete sewage plant.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150409/image/large-5c40ac7af6a12090dde45e1d6c876294.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150409">Following a Scandinavian cruise this summer, the Royal Huisman built sloop, Hyperion, launched in 1998 has returned to Vollenhove. Work on the 47 metre vessel includes upgrading of the propulsion shaft and propeller, the replacement and installation of new gensets, a new main switchboard, upgrading of navigation and communication electronics, upgrading of PLC hardware and Alarm and Monitoring software Maintenance, overhaul and painting of hull and superstructure and new teak decking.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150410/image/large-3ab19e6ef697084793a59e7abd465f5e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150410">Since her delivery 10 years ago the 90 metre Athena, has been engaged in extensive world cruising. Taking advantage of a stopover in the Mediterranean, the Huisfit team will refinish work on the interior varnish, conduct updates of the electrical systems and a rod inspection of her rig.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150411/image/large-271e61c5f7e62e3ba80f4431523eeae6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150411">The 55 metre superyacht Adèle is scheduled for a visit to Vollenhove in 2015-2016. The project will include the servicing and overhaul of propulsion, gensets, thrusters and various board systems, climate control update incl. new chiller, fancoils and ducting, replacement of batteries, replacement of various existing lights with LEDs, upgrade and replacement of various electronics (nav, com, alarm and monitoring, interior touch-ups and repairs, new teak deck and partial replacement of the caprail, servicing of hatches, winches and various deck equipment, painting of inside of hull and parts of the interior, and finally, the repaint/varnish of the hull, superstructures and rig.By Gemma Fottles

We take a closer look at the ten largest superyachts ever built in the Netherlands, with the largest being 99 metres long. Only three yards make up for the top 10 (or we should say top 12, because there are two yachts in the list with the same length). Oceanco takes the lead, with 6 of their yachts making their way into the Top 10, followed by Feadship with 4 deliveries. These days, Indian Empress is in the hands of an Indian owner, who made the yacht available for charter. She is regularly seen at Formula 1 events, which is no surprise, since her owner owns the Sahara Force India Formula One Team. She is exceptionally spacious with accommodation for 16 guests, in an interior designed by Terence Disdale Design.

The Top 10 largest Dutch-built yachts

The Friends of NZ Marine programme launched earlier this year by New Zealand Marine Industry Association (NZ Marine) to harness the collective global goodwill for New Zealand’s marine sector has steadily gained momentum with a number of industry luminaries such as award-winning designers Ed Dubois and Ron Holland among those endorsing the networking programme.With membership now numbering in the hundreds, Friends of NZ Marine links the many New Zealanders and New Zealand-centric people working in the marine industry around the world through a simple online networking system. NZ Marine then shares news and updates from the New Zealand marine sector with this influential group, aiming to encourage the sharing of referrals for new projects and opportunities back to NZ Marine member companies.“There are hundreds of New Zealanders closely involved in marine industries around the world, as is clearly evident with the 2013 America’s Cup which sees New Zealanders contributing design, boat-building, wing and component manufacturing, support vessels and even virtual animation to this year’s regatta,” says Peter Busfield, executive director of NZ Marine.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/145430/image/large-2c1ca95697a7928ba36dacedbbecb026.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/145430">“Many of these expats and interested persons already have a high regard for the New Zealand marine industry and are already acting as good ambassadors. The Friends of NZ Marine programme is already allowing us to show our appreciation of these on-going referrals and encourage more referrals to New Zealand marine industry companies.”Ed Dubois, founder of Dubois Naval Architects, believes the phenomenal success of the New Zealand marine industry is due to the country’s marine heritage.“New Zealanders have a complete awareness of the sea and its power, an ability to build anything because of the country’s isolation, and the necessity over its whole history to be independent,” says Dubois. “It is a combination of these things which has allowed the culture for New Zealand to develop into one of the best boat building centres in the world. When I first dealt with Alloy Yachts, for example in 1999, there were some 25-30 people there. They now employ around 350 people – at one point, I think up to 400 people – and they have emerged as one of the very foremost superyacht builders in the world".Dubois continues: “Fitzroy Yachts have taken advantage of New Zealand’s reputation and are also emerging as a fine yard. Yachting Developments is a very good composite yard. Along with the yards, Southern Spars and other mast makers have taken advantage of modern materials and developed into the premier mast building company in the world".“In short, New Zealand’s marine industry has been a phenomenon and I am fortunate enough to have had many of my designs built there. We have actually built 37 Dubois designs in New Zealand and I believe that the aggregate value is now in excess of €1 billion.”In a similar vein, expat Kiwi Ron Holland, the famed naval architect and designer of racing and superyachts, is passionate about the abilities of the New Zealand marine sector. Now living in Canada, Holland wholeheartedly endorses the Friends of NZ Marine concept.“Wherever you are in the world – superyachts, racing or the commercial marine sector – you’d be hard pressed not to know a New Zealander or two in among the action,” says Holland. “As Friends of NZ Marine we have an opportunity to assist the talented people at home who strive to sell their skills and innovation on the world market.”An example of how Kiwi crews overseas share their enthusiasm for New Zealand-based projects and cruising our shores come from expat Kiwi Captain Max Cumming who oversaw the nine-month refit of SY Athena at Orams Marine Services in Auckland in 2011. The 90m (295ft) three-masted schooner is the largest superyacht refitted in New Zealand. Athena was a showpiece of New Zealand workmanship at the Monaco Yacht Show last year and is in San Francisco for the America’s Cup. Athena, the second largest sailing yacht in the world 

Unless as an invited guest, there are few chances for a keen eye to cast a discerning look around a Huisman built yacht. With owner’s privacy a given, open house viewings of Huisman creations are indeed as rare as hens’ teeth - especially eight years and the equivalent of three circumnavigations after a 2004 launch. The 2012 Monaco Yacht Show provided such a rare opportunity via the attendance of the 90m/295ft, three-masted schooner Athena where visitors were invited to appreciate at close quarters the impact of her graceful lines, Panamax masts, immaculate build and superb presentation – a stunning presence that dominated Port Hercules whilst demonstrating that time is after all a great examiner. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141006/image/large-3506437a86995c5647d21b090ec1e986.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140166">For those fortunate enough to receive a conducted tour the accolades were fulsome: “I was simply blown away” commented one experienced owner “to see such exemplary standards of craftsmanship and engineering throughout every single centimetre of a 90 metre yacht.” Or, as another visitor put it: “Athena is, in every sense, a ship. But this is a ship constructed and detailed throughout to the most outstanding yacht quality. I was amazed by the consistency of perfectionism in everything I saw.” A leading broker observed; “It’s hard to believe that Athena has so many sea miles under her keel, she’s like new. That’s obviously a great credit to her owner and crew but you can’t get away from the fact that it’s an even greater credit to the Huisman yard for such an extraordinary quality of build. For me, this absolutely proves that, over the long term, you get the engineering value that you pay for.” <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141007/image/large-afd54dfaac6f4fedd615f6fe40257c14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140174">Writer Jack Somer, who wrote the book that brought Athena to the armchair of many an aficionado, viewed Athena again for the first time since her launch and commented: “There is something almost indefinably special about a Royal Huisman yacht; but however hard it may be to define, you certainly know their work when you see it”. Interest in Athena’s sale has been such that requests for viewings were accommodated from enquirers from all over the world, keeping owners agents Y.CO and the Royal Huisman team exceptionally busy throughout the show. When he took delivery of the 90 metre Royal Huisman <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288">Athena</a> in 2004 he sold Hyperion. The 47 metre yacht was designed by German Frers and Pieter Beeldsnijder, who was also responsible for her interior. According to her charter broker, Edmiston, Hyperion is dedicated to fast sailing and relaxation – in that order. Her ‘brain’ is a 500 billion byte computer linked to 59 kilometres of wiring, controlling 13,000 square feet of sail on a 59 metre carbon rig, exerting some 200 compressive tons at its base. Earlier this week the sales team of Y.CO listed the 90 metre sailing yacht Athena for sale and now they have listed another Royal Huisman sailing yacht for sale, the J-Class Hanuman. 90m Royal Huisman sailing yacht Athena for sale with Y.CO

The 90 metre, 1,200 tonnes superyacht Athena arrived at Orams Marine Services Auckland during February 2011 for a comprehensive Refit programe carried out over a nine month period. The massive rig carries 2,500 sq m (28,600 sq ft) of sail and when launched Athena was the world’s largest private sailing yacht. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138342/image/large-3316412b2a6a521f7bf483f128dad3ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138342">Craig Park Managing Director of Orams Marine Services said it had been an inspiration to be involved with such an outstanding vessel and the company was proud to have worked on two previous superyachts for the same owner. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138343/image/large-498e1f452cba6fac075bc70d11c84811.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138343">Being the largest superyacht to carry out a refit in New Zealand it was first necessary to upgrade the whole marina. The wooden piles were replaced with sand-filled steel piles, new pontoons built and 10 tonne bollards fitted. Due to the vessel's size much of the work was completed ‘in the water’ which required building a massive under cover shrink wrapped structure which created a working environment very similar to a land-based facility. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138344/image/large-8060f13161e61b0b9b3f5b8094934eb0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138344">A major element of the Refit was a complete repaint of the hull and superstructure and it was critical to ensure paintwork was efficiently prepared and finished under optimum conditions. This also applied to the extensive varnish work undertaken throughout the vessel and Park was pleased to say that the ideal working environment was achieved and also there was no indicative smell or fumes noticeable outside the tent. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138345/image/large-387a5e2ab5ef9a71041d0274ff25af5b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138345">Environmental requirements were met for air and water quality and the whole structure was sealed above the water to capture any falling waste material. For additional security the yacht was surrounded by floating booms. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138346/image/large-2efbf16a05304e8611dc155039fc2887.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138346">There were also always happenings emphasising the sheer volume of the vessel for example the way it devoured materials like rolls of masking tape was amazing. Additionally the vessel was pulling 250amps and many workers using air-powered tools drawing a further 250amps and as Park commented “they drank air like you wouldn’t believe.” Likewise there were often up to 60 workers on board <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288">Athena</a> at any one time and keeping close track and management of the work flow was a logistical challenge especially considering there was a similar number of personnel involved working ashore. The project management XL worksheet was spread over 25 pages each with an accompanying series of subcategories. Basically every fixture, fitting and other equipment throughout the craft was checked, serviced, repaired or replaced either on board or taken ashore to complete the job. The work on engines and generators included fitting new environmentally friendly ‘Diesel Particulate Filters’ resulting in no soot, reduced emissions, and reduced sound levels. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138347/image/large-34e1449fdf1333d50f1c51b96c50cf55.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138347">The exterior and topside painting of the entire vessel involved an area approaching 2000 m². Together with this was the extensive interior and exterior varnish work which was extremely difficult when stripping sun damaged varnish areas &amp; precisely matching them with the existing surrounds. Labour alone over the project period totaled in excess of 80,000 man hours. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138348/image/large-9f132c991f41f05400625c88c4090973.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138348">The masts and rigging were removed for a comprehensive service including running rigging, fixtures, composite components and all equipment replaced as required plus a full overhaul of the hydraulic furling motors. The painting of the three 61m (200ft) Masts alone was described as being similar to painting three 20m yachts. The removal and later replacement of the masts and rigging was another massive logistical exercise involving four cranes and a rigging crew of 20 personal working over a four day period. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138349/image/large-9a44b46ccdee5e3bcc070797015aec39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138349">All sails were removed to the loft for the extensive involvement with checking and servicing the 28,000 ft.² of sail area. At the conclusion of the Refit the sails were returned to be fitted on the vessel. This was another huge job - for example fitting the three in-mast topsails alone required almost two days utilising separate teams, one aloft in bosun chairs and another deck crew operating halyards and winches. Further work involved the service and maintenance of the yachts 55 captive and drum winches. Completing the Refit the vessel was dry docked with the two shafts and propellers removed for service plus a full antifoul. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138350/image/large-be352b66b8db23613573ae517269e8ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138350">Park commented, “Refit's are always challenging and this one also presented an element of drama, firstly during May Auckland experienced a tornado and at other times exceedingly strong winds which severely tested the integrity of our tented structure - which pleasingly withstood every occasion. Further drama was near one midnight hour when the shore power tripped and the vessels emergency genset was powered up with the resultant fumes setting off the fire alarm. Schooner Athena off Positano

During the 2007 Superyacht Cup in Palma, I sailed a day on the 52m gaff rigged schooner Meteor. Although I was already aware of the quality of Royal Huisman, I was very much impressed. From bow to stern, keel to mast, everything was perfectly done and she sailed like a dream. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124409/image/large-6c7fe18670ccda6ebebfd94633784b9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124409">Visiting Royal Huisman is always a great pleasure, and my last visit was no exception. Our tour of the yard started in the shed where <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/796">Twizzle</a> will be build. Twizzle is a 57.5m flybridge ketch for experienced owners, who currently own a 55m Feadship motor yacht and previously owned a large Perini Navi. She is a yacht of many firsts for Royal Huisman: • the first yacht completely styled by the team of Redman Whiteley Dixon, with Todhunter Designers providing interior decoration • the first build with naval architecture by Ed Dubois • the first sailing yacht with a flying bridge The first plates for her hull and superstructure, which will be build in-house, were being cut. She is scheduled for launch and sea trials in March 2008. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124410/image/large-c1e95c2a7332a10b2a247b4819809fa1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124410">We continue our tour to the biggest shed, the one where the 89m Athena (2004) was built, and currently occupied by the largest order of Royal Huisman, the 58m <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/375">Ethereal</a>. Inspired by the 43m Juliet (1993), Ethereal promises to be one of the most complex and advanced superyachts ever build. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124411/image/large-05f7c4029f11ed2e44ea48a884c6374c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124411"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124412/image/large-071b4075a7682bd8e01bb791124529cb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124412">Conceived by an owner from the technology industry, she has some very special features. Perhaps the most-talked-about feature of this project is the hybrid electromechanical propulsion system that allows the yacht, under sail, to charge its technically-advanced bank of lithium polymer batteries, instead of using generators. This energy bank, in turn, is the alternative power plant, enabling Ethereal to raise anchor, motor, hoist sails and run ship’s systems, all under stored electrical power for hours at a time. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124413/image/large-9b71f671ba279e08547139cbc51612da.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124413"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124414/image/large-c0fa489f3624d5aa4934b0d443d5a165.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124414">Ethereal is well underway, with the interior being installed now, and is on schedule for delivery in the autumn of this year. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124415/image/large-c2e403d4b91bdb530299a99d4b3151d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124415">Royal Huisman is currently not only building three new yachts, but also completing a major refit on <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/636">Juliet</a>. It was difficult to compare the sizes of Ethereal, being 15 meters longer, and Juliet, as the first was in a very big shed, making her appear smaller than she really is and the second was in a much smaller shed, making her look bigger. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124416/image/large-1887ebda3b808293580cab665d2733bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124416"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124417/image/large-390e293db5ee81a5d7d2eb5b50304ba7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124417">Next door to Juliet, the re-creation of Tommy Sopwith’s beautiful Super J <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/384">Endeavour II</a> was taking place. She is the third Huisman yacht for the same owner, following <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/595">Hyperion</a> in 1999 and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288">Athena</a> in 2004. The hull had just been turned and she was made ready for installation of the wiring and piping. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124418/image/large-014e2e0f8611dc722c96e0386e626fe8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124418"> Interest in these legendary racing yachts has grown apace, with a number of restorations (including the smaller <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621">Endeavour</a> by Royal Huisman in 1989) and the 2006 recreation of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a>, the “Super-J” that defeated Endeavour II in 1937. Under J-Class Association rules, some design features are restricted historically, but performance can be optimized through a more flexible approach to sail area, ballast ratio, righting moment and build materials. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124419/image/large-d4cfe110be93d5cc85397354e7a0ed4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124419"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124420/image/large-446d52642c8e66c6940d42c718ec08e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124420">As a result, naval architects Gerard Dijkstra &amp; Partners are overseeing the build of Endeavour II’s hull in Alustar, with spars and rig in carbon composite to create a yacht that should demonstrate the full potential of Charles E Nicholson’s original design. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124421/image/large-6f84db10b90efd73cd2dba0d55712534.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124421">Endeavour II is slated for handover in time for the 2009 J class Spring racing season. Royal Huisman is one of the very few shipyards that build everything in-house, from the hull to the interior. All yacht building principles are covered in their 30.000 square facility and one of the most interesting places is the furniture workshop. Before the furniture is moved into the yacht, it’s first build on a mall, so everything fits perfectly in the yacht afterwards. Thus not only improving the efficiency, but also the quality, as people don’t walk in each other’s ways during the construction. Hyperion was built by Royal Huisman for well known yachtsman Jim Clark. When he took delivery of the 90 metre Royal Huisman <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288">Athena</a> in 2004 he sold Hyperion. The 45m yacht was designed by German Frers and Pieter Beeldsnijder, who was also responsible for her interior.
