The sailing yacht, originally built by Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a> with designs from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek Design</a>, was delivered in 2010. It was announced last week that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4972" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="VMG Yachtbuilders (Company)">VMG YachtBuilders</a> is developing its capacity amid increased demand for the company’s yachts. In Spring 2022 the company will begin the construction of two halls for the construction and refit of yachts up to 60 metres. We chatted to Tim van Daal, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a>, which <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4972" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="VMG Yachtbuilders (Company)">VMG</a> purchased in 2020, to find out more about the expansions and the company’s plan for the historic shipyard with its legacy for the construction of classic sailing yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/211079/image/large-e71ac7a4036ce0cc95c47cee00af0ac6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/211079">Situated in Enkuizen, the expanded <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4972" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="VMG Yachtbuilders (Company)">VMG</a> site is opposite the current shipyard and will be the launching point for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a>. “When we purchased <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a> we also purchased all of its technical archive and all of the rights to its client database, logos and brands. It is absolutely our intention to begin building custom designed yachts for our clients next year.”&nbsp;Van Daal has previously been quoted in saying, “our ultimate goal is to build a J-Class one day” but asked if the purchase of the shipyard and its legacy had always been the goal, the answer was eye-opening. “It was not the initial plan to buy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a>, we were looking to take over a new shipyard space and were contacted by the family of the founder Chris Gongriep, who were looking for a new home for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a> and a way to keep the brand alive. Ultimately the decision was easy because our relationship with the family became very strong and we recognise the legacy and honour of continuing the company which has seen the construction of so many exceptional vessels.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/13225/image/large-c4c8617fc142892f3ff0346a3ec4ae6e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13225"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a> was established in 1990 and completed some world-renowned builds since its inauguration, including the super sailing yachts <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Athos62.0m (203'5&quot;)Holland Jachtbouw2010">Athos</a> and two of the legendary J-Class fleet; <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1016" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rainbow40.0m (131'3&quot;)Holland Jachtbouw2012">Rainbow</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2632" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Topaz42.62m (139'10&quot;)Holland Jachtbouw2015">Topaz</a>. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/46710" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw owner passes away (2016-12-14 09:30:00 +0100)">In 2017 the brand collapsed following the sudden death of Gongriep</a>, and though there was early <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/46821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman’s interest in Holland Jachtbouw facility (2017-01-20 13:00:00 +0100)">speculation that Royal Huisman may purchase the brand</a>, this did not come to pass. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/49914" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman expands with former Holland Jachtbouw facility takeover (2019-05-15 14:15:00 +0200)">Though they did rent the hangars in the Port of Amsterdam</a>, they did not take on the company as a whole so the shipyard closed and its employees were dismissed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/29068/image/large-45047a36e7f1c5dff069fdaf7f644dcc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29068">For van Daal the acquisition is an exciting opportunity. He commented, “we want to be one of the major players in classic yachting and have already proven that we are capable of matching the quality of the original brand.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/3347/image/large-c659889627c301a8fc88e7e2669c21f4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/3347">When asked whether the other shipyards had welcomed the move, he assured us that the classic yachting community has been extremely welcoming, offering support and advice on the ongoing projects. Andre Hoek, who has made so many of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a>’s vessels, gave the company a warm endorsement; “The response has been absolutely warm from all sides, with everyone in the industry, particularly the designers, grateful that this historic brand has been given the chance for survival.”&nbsp;

High-performance vessels are often more technically advanced and more challenging to sail, demanding more crew and investment. This should be a consideration.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/199745/image/large-a22583e5d033f7cb731f1397953b8d0d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/199745">Tim Carbury of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> commented, “I think everyone wants a boat that sails properly. Today, most sailing yachts are designed with some sort of performance or sailing ability in mind. The large <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> yachts are a good example. Most clients want to buy something that is primarily for cruising, but has the ability to go regatta sailing.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/184003/image/large-e10f1e01e19053174bcb01ffc12398a6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/184003">Where is the Intended sailing location? Where you want to sail is a major factor when buying any yacht, but especially a sailing yacht. Keel depth is an important consideration when thinking about your desired cruising ground.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/34512/image/large-f57624dac272d7bb2f3f194353a78863.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34512">Nick Hill, Partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Robinson (Company)">Hill Robinson</a>, commented, “Many first time big yacht owners buy sailing yachts to do a circumnavigation – which means long term planning for reliable engineering and easy maintenance to traverse large expanses of ocean.”Henry Smith, Partner &amp; Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright & Partners (Company)">Cecil Wright &amp; Partners,</a> remarked, “If you are going to spend a lot of time sailing in shallow waters around the Bahamas you will need to consider the draft and it’s quite possible a number of yachts with a fixed keel will be ruled out. Should you opt for a fixed keel, a draft of 4.75m is about optimal, enabling a yacht to enter most popular ports around the world. Should you want a lifting keel then you will need to factor this into the not insignificant cost of a new build and this will likely be reflected in the asking price of a brokerage yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/85211/image/large-78c4406d954cabb70e22eea5cbb9d86a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/85211">Do you intend to charter your yacht or is this going to be a private, family vessel?Yachts entering the charter market demand different focal points than vessels used solely for private sailing. Vessels which are too individualistic will struggle in the charter market, and a yacht which has been tailored for north Atlantic exploration, won’t thrive in the Mediterranean.&nbsp;Tim Langead, Sales Broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>, commented, “The sailing yacht market is almost the opposite of the motor yacht market, in that the majority are private. Whether you are planning to charter a yacht is an important consideration from the beginning of the motor yacht purchasing process, however it’s a question that comes much later when buying a sailing yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/116021/image/large-6773709c37095d55868027bd7feae5b2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/116021">Nick Hill added that crew accommodation is also an important factor. “The majority of sailing yachts have a single accommodation deck, so crew interaction is often inevitable, and the level of service tends to be more informal, simply due to the space and facilities available.”What is the yacht equipped with, such as diving equipment, toys - this can determine size:Henry Smith of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright & Partners (Company)">Cecil Wright &amp; Partners</a> commented, “We don’t generally see sailing boats with large inventories of toys – there just isn’t space. The toys we tend to see are smaller sailing dinghies, electric surfboards and similar. However, the era of the chase boat is creeping into sailing yachts now and they are becoming more common. In one instance I have worked on recently, we equipped a chase boat as a mobile dive centre where the owner can rest and enjoy the trappings of his sailing yacht between dives without the need to return to the sailing yacht itself.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/75048/image/large-0d5f3ab5a64d13750bb5164a0c013402.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/75048">What are the advantages and disadvantages of used vs. new sailing yachts?With differing lead times, costs and options for customisation, the difference between any type of new and used yacht is consistent, but sailing yachts have their own particular advantages and disadvantages.&nbsp;Tim Carbury remarked, “Some of the buyers I work with appreciate the provenance of a sailing yacht. There is quite often a lot of nostalgia with sailboats – some owners love the idea of knowing that the boat is 30 years old and has been round the world a few times and been upgraded by different owners along the way. Of course, sailing yachts have different areas of wear and tear to motor yachts, and for some owners, a new boat with fresh rigging and sails is what they want.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20256/image/large-a492c3668674190d0f40ec09091492c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20256">Finally Tim Langmead of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> added, “The big advantage of buying a used sailing yacht is, of course, the price. On the flip side, you inherit the previous owner’s issues. Five things to consider before buying your first sailing yacht

With the world gradually pulling itself from the grip of a global pandemic, many people have been dreaming of that once in a lifetime trip, exploring new parts of the world and finally shaking off a turbulent year. For most, travel in the current climate can be daunting, not knowing the regulations per country, vaccine status and the fear of illness, but there is one type of holiday that can bypass many of these concerns – charter. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/14113/image/large-aa58bee3b0b5f7afad741344e60153ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/14113">There are few other industries that can offer absolute privacy, or the world class standard of luxury, which can be offered aboard a crewed charter yacht. However, picking the right broker, yacht and destination can be a mammoth task, so we asked some of the leading brokers in the industry for their top tips for first time charterers.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/196103/image/large-c7b13c1b007cc75a49386273d08084fb.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/196103"> Look into booking your charter well ahead of time:&nbsp; Many brokers are predicting a boom in superyacht charters in the coming year, and with many people having suffered from holiday cancellations during 2020, demand will be at an all time high. Marie Molls, Partner, fleet manager and charter broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess Yachts</a> said; “Look into planning your charter early. The popular yachts book up fast, especially in the high season weeks, so it’s best to book, sometimes as early as 12 months in advance”.&nbsp;Peter Bennett, Founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/336" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluewater Yachting (Company)">Bluewater Yachting</a> shared the sentiment, noting, “Worldwide, the charter industry is going to really kick off, people have been pent up for so long and now they want to get away. You won't be able to book a holiday, all the yachts that want to charter will be booked, maybe not this year but definitely next year. I recommend that if you want to charter in 2022, book early to avoid disappointment!” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/50650/image/large-0e1e16e84a12b6972bfd37297e6a3c1b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50650">Choose your charter broker carefully:&nbsp;Your charter broker is the person that you can rely on to find the perfect yacht for you, so finding the right broker is an all important step. Doing your research online is crucial, and it is also a good idea to find a broker that speaks your language and understands your perspective. Eleanor Bloodworth, Charter Specialist at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Y.CO (Company)">Y.CO</a>, noted, “Not only will your broker have access to a wider variety of yachts, but they are visiting the yachts and attending shows frequently, so they have a great knowledge of what the yachts are really like on board and who the captains are. This can give you much more insight to a yacht than a photo or video can ever do.”&nbsp;Many brokerages have a selection of international firms, so spend some time searching for the company that matches your interests and your requirements. It is important not to just look for a yacht and go from there, because that can really limit your options! Lucinda Rosen, Charter Broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright & Partners (Company)">Cecil Wright and Partners</a> commented, “First time charterers can be overwhelmed with all the information and seemingly limitless choice of yachts from multiple brokerages.” Adding that the key to a successful charter is to have direct contact with the broker, over Zoom or in person, because “This allows a broker to be able to put together the absolute best options to suit them as well as guide first time charterers through the process, get them a good deal and be able to advise them on the best itinerary too.”Frances Edgeworth of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> added, “Make sure you work with a qualified broker who has good credentials such as being a MYBA or IYBA member. A broker’s role goes far beyond securing a yacht: by working with a trusted broker, you will be fully supported by an experienced professional throughout the process.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/196101/image/large-4777a6a4f798d029145fa24a0f8acbf8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/196101">Be Flexible:If you’re chartering for the first time, it's a good idea to be open to a variety of options and locations, this will help your broker research the best options for you and your guests. Marie Molls of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a> added, “if you are ever uncertain, ask your brokers advice and recommendations, they are there to help find you the best vessel in the right location, and they have the experience.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/34507/image/large-2ca3ba6c5fb5c1398fb8efe03cc54948.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34507">Don’t be afraid to ask for final costs:&nbsp;For first time charterers, defining the final costs can be confusing, but don't be afraid to ask your broker about the total costs of the charter. Almost all charters have an additional provisional allowance, be it for food, petrol, drinks or port tax, and these are often not calculated within the initial charter fee. It is important to speak to your broker about the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) and this will ensure you aren’t caught out by unforeseen costs.Alice Newnham, charter broker with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> agreed adding, “When working with your consultant to find the perfect boat for your charter, it is really important that you are transparent about what you are looking to spend. There are other fees such as VAT/tax and crew gratuity that your charter consultant will also brief you on prior to you making your decision.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/196102/image/large-595219feb078a08afa5a5717e50a53ca.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/196102">Utilise your crew:&nbsp;Lastly, it's important to remember that the crew are really your best asset once you are aboard, they will know the vessel better than anyone, even your broker, and it is likely that they have cruised to many of the locations you are visiting before. The more information you give to them about your preferences, the easier it will be for them to cater to your desires and ensure that you have the best holiday experience possible. Nicola Breymaier of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> commented, “Pay particular attention to the crew. Ensure your broker is aware of the kind of service you are expecting and that the crew will fit with that; be it formal, energetic, gourmet chef, sport specialists, etc. The crew is just as important, if not more important than the yacht itself!”Don’t shy away from asking their advice, or requesting the things you feel you need to truly enjoy your charter – that is what they are there for! William Molloy, the senior charter broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/808" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moravia Yachting (Company)">Moravia Yachting</a> agrees, adding, “A great charter crew will immediately realise if clients want to relax and enjoy the privacy offered by the yacht or be entertained during the cruise. They will have the local knowledge along the route to help you find ‘hidden gems’ along your bespoke itinerary. Whether it be the very best restaurants, an open-air opera, or the most beautiful anchorages for water-sports and idyllic lunches.” Alice Newnham of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> reiterated also this point, “The captain, together with their crew explore the areas week in week out to seek out the best anchorages, restaurants, ports to give you a unique insight into the cruising grounds. They are knowledgeable - so use them! According to our market intelligence system <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-intelligence" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times iQ</a>, there are 799 operating sailing yachts over 30 metres in the world today. These yachts have a total length of 31,262 metres, an average length of 39.1 metres and an average volume of 206 gross tonnes (GT). In the past 10 years, 215 sailing superyachts were completed.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/77265/image/large-f487ee2e1c35f752ee9a51a16d4d6f86.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77265">Used MarketOf the 799 30-metre plus sailing yachts in operation, there are currently 179 <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/sailing/30.0m+/for-sale" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">yachts for sale</a> on the market, which is 22.4% of the sailing yacht fleet in operation. Compared to the motor yacht fleet average of 23.4% this is slightly lower. The total combined length of the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/sailing/30.0m+/for-sale" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">sailing yachts for sale</a> is 6,976 metres, with an average length of 39.0 metres and an average volume of 182GT.The average price of a yacht on the used sailing yacht market right now is €6.1 million. When looking at the price per GT, we can see an average price of €34,000 per GT. For the total used superyacht fleet sold in the last two years, this average stood at 654 days.The 77 used sailing yachts sold in the last two years represented a total value of €490 million in terms of final asking prices. Their average last asking price was €7.5 million per yacht or €37,440 per GT. The largest used sailing yacht sold in this time period was the 70-metre Sybaris (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4315" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Badis I70.0m (229'8&quot;)Perini Navi2016">Badis I),</a>&nbsp;which was also the highest valued used sailing yacht to be sold, with a final asking price of €88,000,000. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/7805/image/large-e6246afaadd124db4c12e561c2ca4e27.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7805">The nine used sailing yachts sold in the first quarter of 2019 had an average final asking price of €9.0 million versus €6.8 million for the seven used sailing yachts sold in the first quarter of 2018. The average final asking price per GT for the used sailing yachts which were sold in the first quarter of 2019 was €34,820 versus €28,620 for the first quarter of 2018.Note that comparing sailing yacht sales by the price per GT is always a bit tricky as even two sailing yachts of the same length and year of build can be very different in terms of design, specification and hull shape.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/82381/image/large-3b7b913300413ea62e495250360a7c47.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/82381"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/82379/image/large-a4aa731b9685b4fb33c0db497194d973.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/82379">The used sailing yacht market appears to be showing signs of improvement, with sales up by eight yachts in 2018 compared to 2017 and the number of yachts new to the market going down by 21 units year-on-year during 2018. This tightening of supply has led to a gradual increase in the average asking price of used sailing yachts.&nbsp;In the first quarter of 2017, the average used sailing superyacht had an asking price of €1.5 million, whereas by the end of the first quarter of 2019, this number had risen to €9.0 million. Cruising Special: Around the world with Athos 

Tucked away in the Dutch city of Edam, Hoek Design Naval Architects was founded by André Hoek in 1986 and boasts one of the world’s most impressive portfolios in custom and semi-custom sailing yacht designs, with a track record of designing more than 250 Dutch flat bottom yachts and over 120 ocean-going sailing yachts during their 31 years in business.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/17021/image/large-6f4cbdcc53ad3159f27ae639e1b284ab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17021"> Andre Hoek and Ruurt Meulemans with their new Turquoise motor yacht project In response to both the transforming superyacht market and the changing needs of their clients, interestingly, Hoek Design has recently moved into the motor yacht market. We sat down with company founder André Hoek and his business partner Ruurt Meulemans to hear more about this new direction.&nbsp;For both Hoek and Meulemans, it was their passion which brought them into the yachting industry. Hoek has been an avid sailor since the age of five and Meulemans admits candidly that his earliest enthusiasm was actually for motoryachts, not sailing yachts. “When I was a young kid I also grew up in boats and sailing boats, and when I was really young I always wanted to have power boats because they’re much more exciting!” &nbsp;For Hoek, it was optimising his brother’s traditional Dutch leeboard skûtsje for sailboat racing which marked the start of his yacht designing career. Since then, he built up a reputation for his optimisation of traditional Dutch flat-bottomed boats for racing alongside his jobs working for, amongst others, the design office of the Canadian yard C&amp;C yachts in 1979 - at the time, one of the world’s leading design offices. &nbsp;On arriving back to the Netherlands from Canada in early 1980, Hoek was confronted with limited work in yacht design offices at the time, and so took on a position in an offshore salvage and heavy lifting company, where he subsequently worked for six years - of course continuing to indulge in his passion of designing all kinds of yachts on the side. During this time, Hoek also took on an MBA with a marketing background: a move which would prove vital in the foundation of Hoek Design. “After one year I decided to stop my job and do a full-time MBA. When I quit my job, then all of a sudden in 1986 I got all kinds of requests from left, right and centre. That’s how I started what would become Hoek Design.”&nbsp;From its humble beginnings in the attic of Hoek’s Amsterdam house, Hoek Design moved to Edam in 1988 and the first yachts in their recognisable ‘Truly Classic’ line were born.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/17019/image/large-4db379155e8b49e1cd88b436bf4dce28.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17019"> The 54.64m Vitters-built Adele The first two early, classically styled 70-foot sailing yachts were characterised by a classic hull shape, wing keels and spade rudders. “On this side of the pond we were the first ones to develop these kinds of boats, and from there on we started to develop different kinds of boats - bigger boats,” explains Hoek. Since its foundations, Hoek Design has designed custom and semi-custom yachts in a wide range of styles and sizes, ranging from the Truly Classic to the ultra modern.A year before Meulemans joined the company in 1999, Hoek Design expanded and launched Hoek Brokerage, a company which, as Hoek makes clear, is completely separate from the design company to avoid any possible conflicts of interest. In fact, the brokerage side of the business was really established in order to offer an additional seamless service to Hoek’s clients looking to sell their yachts or upgrade - not with personal financial reward in mind. As Hoek explains: “From the very beginning, our brokers work on a salary basis, not a commission basis. For new yachts being built, we never ask for commissions. It is just the design office involved in that process, not the brokerage company. We do fair and honest business: it takes forever to build a name but you can destroy it pretty quickly.”&nbsp;Hoek and Meulemans have established this name for themselves by carrying out the entire design process in-house - a strategy which sets them apart from a number of their main competitors. “We are different because our office can do basically everything. We do in-house structural engineering, CFD work, interior design, exterior design and a lot of optimisation work,” explains Hoek.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/17016/image/large-55be7c0e85ed8630450c59a4a7db72b6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17016"> The 62m Athos, built by Holland Jachtbouw in 2010 Hoek’s J-class racing yachts and Truly Classic range with growing sizes have remained enduringly popular - an overwhelming advantage in the somewhat dwindling sailing yacht market. Both partners are active racing sailors themselves. Meulemans has been sailing all year on the winner of this year’s World Championships, the J-Class Lionheart, and Hoek raced on the J-class, Topaz. Since the last America's Cup, Hoek Design experienced increased interest in these classic yacht designs from younger owners, with their new Vitters-built J-Class Yacht, Svea, being launched for a new owner in January this year.&nbsp;Continuing their philosophy of innovation, Hoek Design has been on the cusp of sailing yacht market developments in recent years. Their newest, custom sailing yachts, such as the 46-metre Pilot Classic, Elfje - built at Royal Huisman in 2014 - focus on performance to appeal to a younger clientele but still retain their classic designs. As Hoek explains, “Why do people build boats that are classically styled? They are beautiful and they will still be beautiful in 10 years time. There are not many clients who want to know from the moment that they launch a boat that they have lost half of their investment. Look what happens to the modern styling of boats. It’s different, but there will be another boat that’s going to be even more extravagant than that one and then all of a sudden that one is outdated again, so, regardless of age, the financial side is also important.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/17017/image/large-ebb895ce1e9bf7088738f93b5f74bc81.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17017"> Elfje The decision for Hoek Design to move into motoryachts was a natural one for the partners, with the changing needs of their clients at the forefront of their minds. “Quite a number of our clients are getting older and they want to go from sailing into motor yachts, so we wanted to develop something with the same philosophy in mind that we have had for all of our boats”, Hoek told us. With numerous motoryacht projects currently underway, one of their most recent is the 56-metre expedition yacht currently in build at Turquoise Yachts in Turkey. “There’s a big trend at the moment in expedition yachts, and a lot of people think that when you do expeditions you have to do something agricultural. That’s not the case: we wanted to design something that is both beautiful, performs and keeps its value”, explains Hoek. The 56-metre vessel is RINA classified as ‘Ice Class B’ and can reach the Arctic, Antarctic and Northwest passage, with an ice-breaking bow and 12-metre tenders stored under her decks. “It’s got everything that you could imagine on a new, modern boat,” says Hoek.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/1457/image/large-d6cc5ac6f9dfa094e6d24fa7edc8ffb4.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/1457"> Lombok Regardless of their new motor ventures, it is undoubtedly the sailing background of Hoek Design which gives them a unique approach to motoryacht design. “We are designers that focus on the styling and the proportions of the design, more than perhaps a motoryacht designer does. Many motoryacht designers just take on the exterior design of a project, whereas our office is responsible for exterior styling, naval architecture and sometimes interior design work too, as is the case with our 56-metre at Turquoise,” says Meulemans.&nbsp;Looking to the future, Hoek and Meulemans hope to establish a recognisably Hoek design for their motoryachts. As Meulemans puts it, “Many people around the world can see when a boat is located at anchorage, that it’s a Hoek design. Hoek Design: From Truly Classic to truly modern

YCCS Virgin Gorda welcomes majestic fleet for superyacht regatta

This enabled us to follow both Classes in the race perfectly and I also benefitted from Colin’s superb knowledge of the Solent and the tricky tides. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140378/image/large-62cf41955db27669b623c92880d37128.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140378">Both Class 1 and 2 had been given a ‘sausage’ shaped course due to the postponed start, Class 1’s mark a mile further on. The second Pursuit race of The Superyacht Cup saw Seaquell set off first, hoisting their Spinnaker early, spilling the wind until crossing the line, as did many of the fleet on the westerly reaching course towards The Needles. Bare Necessities encountered a small problem with the hoist, sending a man up the mast to ensure the sock was fully up. Drumfire had the best start of the day from the pin end, looking extremely slick with their well-rehearsed crew. Athos and Savannah had reasonable starts, choosing to bear away along the start line until their start gun went before hoisting their spinnakers. Adela on the other hand came screaming up to the start with their spinnaker already up. Savannah and Mari Cha III chose the mainland end of the mark following Drumfire’s tactic, as opposed to the other yachts that had already set off. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140379/image/large-8605c1a37be82fc6eb90b3eb3547ecd3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140379">Much anticipation was on Hamilton before the start to see how she would perform after the extremely light airs on Day 1, with slightly more breeze on Day 2. Unfortunately she encountered a small problem with the spinnaker hoist, as it knotted but thankfully for them, and not the rest of the fleet, the problem was resolved quickly and once filled was a remarkable sight as she hunted down all those ahead of her! Hamilton chose the Island side, whilst Leopard 3 hoisted their spinnaker 40 seconds prior to their start gun, crossing the line at full speed in the conditions that were on offer. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140380/image/large-06659e7921358af358ae605d0647f652.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140380">Now all the yachts had started, an enthralling race of tactics and gambling played out in front of us around the narrow course in the Solent, some of the yachts restricted by as much as 20ft (6.2m) of draft in strong tides and gentle breeze! <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140381/image/large-77a31cdcb6d60dedc0380c1cd60b9a87.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140381">Athos gybes, choosing the Island shoreline with Adela following suit, catching up quickly on a superb first leg. Behind them, Mari Cha III chooses the mainland, as does Leopard 3 however she encounters headsail problems which by the first mark would cost them almost half a mile on Hamilton who rounds it ahead, as the leader of the Class 1 fleet. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140382/image/large-a4a0c724ae06e51aab5b7624ae67e89e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140382">As both classes neared their first mark, the wind shifted to a more easterly direction meaning a change in their predicted tactics, back down the Solent to the finish line opposite The Royal Yacht Squadron. Heartbeat led Drumfire, followed by Bare Necessities then Savannah, Adela, Seaquell and Athos. With the tide rushing towards them, Heartbeat chose the mainland side of the channel, whilst Drumfire gambled to cross the Solent hoping for a back-eddy (where the current doubles back on itself and actually flows in the opposite direction) close to the shore with her shallow draft to pay off despite the possibility of a wind shadow from the island. If the wind were to hold, she would have been laughing however sadly for her she couldn’t quite come in close enough to the shore because of the wind shadow from the island and therefore did not benefit as she would otherwise have done. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140383/image/large-bba38e5755d682eaca74ce098057fdd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140383">The rest of the race spotted Drumfire’s misfortune ahead, the lighter yachts hugging the mainland shore, whilst Athos and Adela used their great ballast to their advantage, ploughing through the tide at times, opting for a shorter route to the finish line. Bare Necessities were having a great day, benefitting enormously from the local boys onboard, keeping up with Heartbeat who was trying desperately to break away. Then Athos decides to head towards the mainland shore, catching Adela unawares, what a comeback after Adela’s early take-over down the first leg! <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140384/image/large-483e97679b92da86664687ff165f8ada.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140384">Due to the positioning of the first mark, Class 1 had no choice but to race down the mainland shoreline, Hamilton really shining in the conditions, and Leopard 3 close behind tracking her every move. Hamilton gybes, Leopard 3 gybes, Hamilton gybes, Leopard 3 gybes etc. etc. – match racing at its best! Mari Cha III’s advantage on the start line did not seem to be enough as her distinct Dragon logo across her enormous spinnaker faded further behind; she needed another 5 knots of breeze to really race at her best. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140385/image/large-6557d3d67eee18020261b1bc5619701c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140385">As Hamilton, followed by Leopard 3 caught up with Class 2 around one mile from the finish line, the race had come to a nail biting close! Hamilton opts for the northern end of the finish line, so with nothing to lose, Leopard 3 crosses the tide and starts gunning towards The Royal Yacht Squadron end of the line! She’s catching, is it going to pay off?! Not quite! Hamilton takes it in a glorious performance for crew and spectators alike. This was their 6th day of sailing together, well done! <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140386/image/large-5d41c99bf9f19f74bdd9cc5d6613c902.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140386">As the tide strengthened, those in the fleet with smaller sail area and lighter ballast struggled to hold on, as Athos crossed the line next. A fantastic effort and their celebrations onboard said it all, they were delighted to have beaten Adela who had got the better of them in Falmouth just a couple of weeks ago. Then in a perfect climax, the fight was on between Unfurled, who had excelled on the first day winning by a large margin, and Adela. Shadowing each other’s every move; they chopped and changed in position right up to the finish line where they were just metres apart abeam, the gun sounded twice in quick succession – less than a second – too close to call from where we were sitting in the RIB-X, which was sitting on the finish line! Unfurled literally pipped Adela to the post! What a day, and what a privilege to see these beautiful yachts race against one another in a competitive but friendly spirit. By Richard Callender

The Superyacht Cup day two race report

In a move that strengthens their position as one of the world’s leading superyacht and raceboat rig and structural inspection specialists, international riggers Marine Results have signed a Teaming Agreement with Pierrepont Analysis. All contracts acquired by Pierrepont in the marine sector will be handled jointly by the two companies, as will inspections that are acquired directly by Marine Results. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140389/image/large-5df562e6f6ef708c3742315faad73200.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140389">“By securing the marine services of Pierrepont our core team can now focus on the other areas of our business while Pierrepont can head up our inspection facility,” explains Managing Director Ed Danby. “Marine Results already has a very high level of qualified expertise for carrying out non destructive testing including ultrasonic and phased array inspections. We also have a very healthy order book for major yacht rig work. The arrangement increases the capacity of both companies, enabling us to take our offer to a higher level across our customer base.” Pierrepont Analysis is run by Ben Pierrepont. The company already has a significant turnover in the marine sector, and is active in the renewable-energy, aeronautical and automotive sectors, which it will continue to service separately. Like the Directors of Marine Results, Ben Pierrepont is NDT qualified with nine years experience. He has a wealth of marine surveying experience and expertise in composite build and repair techniques. Ben has built and surveyed some of the most up to date racing and cruising boats afloat, including numerous America’s Cup and Open 60 Class boats. “The agreement with Marine Results enables us to offer a broader service and a bigger team not just for our NDT rig inspections but for hull, deck, internal structures, keel and other structural inspections as well,” comments Ben. “The exclusivity of our arrangement means that all rig inspection work coming into Pierrepont will be routed through Marine Results". The contract formally starts on 1st August but the two companies have already completed two projects together. Last week the 220ft ketch Athos had her rigged unstepped and inspected in a three day fast turnaround, after she had sustained damage. She was fully operational again in time to participate in the Superyacht Cup in Cowes. A second contract for a 24 metre luxury catamaran, part of the Sunreef Yachts fleet, was undertaken in Poland when the Marine Results/Pierrepont partnership carried out analysis on the resin infused carbon mast. Two Superyacht Cup events in 2012

Superyachts Athos and Firefly prepare for first Regatta

Hoek Design in the Netherlands will celebrate its 25th anniversary in August 2011. The leading design and naval architecture office is still run by its founder, Andre Hoek, who today shares the boards with a range of specialists from across the spectrum of luxury sailing and motoryachts. The company will mark its silver jubilee in style by hosting a special Hoek Design Cup event within the Superyacht Cup in Palma in June. Eight superyachts designed by Hoek Design have already agreed to participate and more are expected to confirm in the coming weeks.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/132861/image/large-d745553beaae56c5d316911c8acc8b1f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132861" class="legacy">After graduating as a naval architect, Andre Hoek started his design career in 1979 with C@C Yachts in Toronto. The Hoek Design office was officially opened in August 1986 and three years later moved to its current location in a spectacular 16th century building in Edam, a Dutch city famous for its cheese and architecture. The design team consists of ten naval architects, hydrodynamicists, structural engineers, interior designers and stylists.Andre now shares the office helm with partner and technical director Ruurt Meulemans. The present portfolio of Hoek Design covers a wide variety of design work, from classic to modern styled sailing and motoryachts for both cruising and racing. While the early design work focussed on optimising the performance of existing yachts, new designs were soon being made, tank tested and wind tunnel tested, then optimised by an in-house developed velocity prediction program. Early successes included the 70 ft sloop Joss and the ketch Kim', followed by a string of Truly Classic yachts, a brand name that is now widely used internationally for these craft. The 62 metre Athos in Gibraltar

Rondal has successfully stepped the masts on the 62 m Hoek Design schooner Athos, built at Holland Jachtbouw. Starting on a calm late-April morning followed later by rain and the threat of wind, the two masts measuring 61 m and 54 m were seamlessly lowered into their deck rings. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131466/image/large-f352a3a94130422547ecd2e93bf5d55e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131466"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131467/image/large-a84da112d5d724c500398df0cbe72d28.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131467">The carbon Rondal furling booms and the main (with an exceptional length of 23.5 m) were next to be added, with the stainless steel bowsprit having been placed some weeks prior. A crow’s nest travelling up the foremast makes for great views. Both masts were built from High Modulus carbon fibre for weight optimisation and high performance. The masts are supported by lightweight PBO rigging. With an impressive 1980 m² upwind sail area, Athos’ rig is immensely powerful and will give the owner an edge in many regattas to come. As well as storing the immense sails, the carbon rollaway booms also incorporate powered sun awnings that cover almost three quarters of the deck. Athos receives Rondal rig

On Wednesday April 21st 2010, the two carbon fibre masts of giant schooner Athos were stepped and supplied with SmartRigging PBO. The event took place in the early morning at Holland Jachtbouw in Zaandam, just above Amsterdam/Netherlands. By the end of the afternoon, the 203ft privately owned cruising yacht, designed by Andre Hoek, was ready for the first trimming session. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131020/image/large-3e4103e74ccf45a7580c3b7b5e964b4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131020">"We designed the standing rigging for <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a>, which is all custom made", explains Constantijn Weber from Joure (Netherlands) based SmartRigging. "Rod rigging is the standard for this segment. However, we supplied her with lightweight composite rigging, normally used for racing yachts. It is approximately eighty percent lighter than stainless steel, which makes it interesting for a 62 meter long schooner as <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a>." Weber about the process: "We use a high quality production technique, called endless winding, optimized by us. It allows us to work very precisely. We put the same amount of tension on all fibres to stretch them equally, which results in low stretch and a long lifespan." Designing the standing rigging for 203ft <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> was not a usual challenge for SmartRigging. Weber: "No, the biggest yacht we have done before was 32 meter long. The engineering work took up most of the time, as everything needs to fit at once. We can't make any mistakes, because that means you can start all over again. It is impossible to adjust the rigging length as soon as it is produced." Walking onboard of the Dutch schooner he smiles: "Fortunately, we succeeded." <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> is the largest two-mast schooner ever built. She is designed by Andre Hoek and built by Holland Jachtbouw. The carbon masts are manufactured by Rondal and the standing rigging by SmartRigging. She carries the biggest lightweight rigging package yet supplied in the world. Compared to rod rigging, it saves the weight of four Mini Cooper cars at the height of the first spreader. A total of 5.500 kilometres of fibre has been used for the standing rigging. Dudgeon, the Knightsbridge-based luxury sofa maker, has recently been awarded an order to make all the bespoke upholstered furniture for a superb new sailing superyacht the 62 metre schooner SY Athos. Styling for the furniture will be classic but contemporary using elegant shapes, discrete curved arms and mahogany showwood bases. The furniture will be made at Dudgeon’s London workshops, and will be fitted on site by the company’s own craftsmen. Dudgeon wins major order for luxury furniture for new superyacht, Athos

When launched next year, Athos will be the world’s largest privately owned, modern two-mast schooner. She has a LOA of 62 metres, a beam of 11 metres and, uniquely for her size, is being built to MCA and Veritas. Her deep-V hull is made of 5383 aluminium, a high modulus metal that increases strength and is less prone to corrosion. Athos is the largest sailing yacht yet built in this type of super-strong alloy and the first project in HJB’s brand-new assembly and finishing hall. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124799/image/large-e221ec85acc66940eed10b7564221bcc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124799">Designed by Hoek Naval Architects, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> has a shallow draught keel and integrated centreboard. She will have a 1980 m² upwind sail area on carbon spars, while a mast height of 62 metres will allow passage under the Bridge of the Americas. An almost entirely pushbutton-operated rig will include furling booms on boomvangs, carbon spars and captive winches on sheets and halyards. Twin main engines will drive controllable pitch propellers, while two diesel and two shaft generators provide a parallel power supply. The full beam owner’s suite will feature a large bathroom between the owner’s deckhouse and bedroom, a walk-in closet and a wealth of locker space. Direct access is provided to the owner’s deckhouse and owner’s cockpit on the aft deck. Privacy is assured in the deckhouse by having the wheel positioned forward of this location. Forward of the owner’s suite will be four good-sized guest suites. The main deckhouse will have a large dining area to starboard, with a lounge and stewardess area to port. The lower saloon is arranged as a large library to starboard, with a galley opposite that can be either open or closed. Cooking will be an integral part of the interior set-up as the owners enjoy creating haute cuisine. Forward are a large crew mess, crew galley, five crew cabins, and a large separate captain-chief engineer office with an integrated control room.

Work continues apace on mighty Athos

Hoek Design in the Netherlands has announced the signing of a contract for a sister vessel to the triple award-winning sailing yacht Adele. The 180 ft ketch Marie will have an identical hull, keel, rudder and sail plan to Adele but features a new and entirely customised interior and deck layout. She will be built at Vitters Shipyard and is due to be launched in the spring of 2010. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124691/image/large-b24caa082799d8a4bfd8627e2acc3a16.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124691">The fabulous looks and sensational performance of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1842">Adele</a> has already inspired the owners of the 174 ft sloop <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/149">Erica 12</a> (currently under construction at Vitters) and the 204 ft schooner <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> (currently under construction at Holland Jachtbouw). On <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2411">Marie</a>, the main deckhouse will be enlarged and there will be no forward deckhouse. This allows the entire deck and interior layout to be tailored to the owner’s taste and requirements. An extensive weight saving programme will be implemented with composite rigging, high modulus carbon spars, furling booms and lightweight interiors improving an already outstanding performance even further. The hull will be constructed in Alustar to ABS and MCA specifications. Marie's interior will also be designed by Hoek Design and features the renowned privacy concept developed by the office for Adele and successfully deployed on four other mega sailing yachts. The aft owner’s cabin is directly connected to an owner’s deckhouse and aft cockpit with the helms forward of the owner’s deckhouse. The interior design will be further arranged in partnership with David Easton in New York, who will take care of the interior decoration of Marie. Lightweight raised and fielded Anigre panels will offer a bright and light style. Nigel Ingram of MCM Marine Construction Management will act as the owner’s representative. Marie is the fourth Hoek Design yacht of 180 ft or above to have gone from design to construction. She will also be the fifth superyacht from the Hoek Design office to be built by Vitters.

Hoek Design unveils 180ft Vitters ketch Marie

HJB, the new name for Holland Jachtbouw, has unveiled its brand-new construction facility at a spectacular ceremony attended by hundreds of personnel and invited guests from around the world. From the deck of the gigantic schooner Athos, a canon blast revealed the yard’s new logo and slogan, ‘Where can we take you’. Athos will be the first yacht to be completed in the new assembly and finishing hall, which measures 69 x 20 metres and is fitted with the very latest technical equipment and logistics. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124519/image/large-b9fa009174966a0ea177f5c7da9e144f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124519">April 4, 2008 will go down as a landmark in the history of luxury yachtbuilding. Leading members of the industry gathered in the afternoon at the HJB yard near Amsterdam for a private tour and presentation by the HJB management team. Yard founder Chris Gongriep looked back at how groundbreaking yachts such as his own Windrose of Amsterdam, had brought Holland Jachtbouw global prominence. Managing Director Paul Dielemans then explained how he, Tako van Ineveld (Production Director) and Arjen Zijlmans (Technical Director) have taken the yard forward since a management buy-out two years ago. “Our goal is to lead the industry in terms of quality in our chosen sector of sailing yachts and motorboats under 500GT,” Dielemans explained. “This is being achieved via the implementation of the World Class Manufacturing (WCM), a process that standardises production and gives staff ownership over quality. Our new facilities were therefore designed by our personnel, who used all their practical experience to create this superlative new hall and the adjacent three-story workshops and support divisions.” <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124520/image/large-a659e94a55ea94da8167f793b851dd10.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124520">Dielemans also announced plans to upgrade the existing construction hall (45 x 20 metres) to the same state of the art before the arrival of a new 42-metre motoryacht project in the summer. He and his co-directors then gave their audience a tour of the yard, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> and the 43-metre motoryacht <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/197">Life Saga</a>, which has just completed a spectacular 18-month refit at HJB. Hundreds more guests came to the yard in evening for the official opening ceremony and a well-deserved party.

New facilities herald dawn of a new era for HJB

Construction is well underway on Lionheart, the first of a new breed of aluminium J-Class yachts from the boards of Hoek Design in the Netherlands. One of the leading offices in classically styled sailing yachts, Hoek Design is intimately involved in the revival of these magnificent yachts from the 1930s. In addition to Lionheart, which will be launched in the third quarter of 2009, the office has three other J-class yachts under development. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123975/image/large-8ec277ebaa0f4f8891893b9b01902610.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123975"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123976/image/large-49394d1bc30f30f662488a600a46e0d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123976">Hoek Design has developed specific Velocity Prediction Software for J-Class yachts in partnership with Piet van Oossanen of wing keel fame. This highly sophisticated Velocity Prediction Program (VPP) has been developed specifically for these craft, and was calibrated using tank test data from a six-metre long model of a J. The aerodynamic part was calibrated with wind tunnel test data. “In contrast to other types of software, our VPP software is capable of calculating rudder angles as well as predicting performance in waves,” Andre Hoek explains. “This enables us to also optimise helm balance.” History makers One of the key drivers of the J-Class revival was the decision of the J-Class Association to allow aluminium to be used as a hull construction material. This reinforced the renewed interest among owners to build J-class yachts. A total of 20 J’s were designed between 1930 and 1937. Of the ten built in the 1930s, only three have survived: <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621">Endeavour</a>, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251">Velsheda</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276">Shamrock V</a>. The <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a> (photo below) that sails today is a replica built to the original lines drawings in steel and launched in 2003. This leaves ten J-Class designs that have never been built. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123977/image/large-d06448bccb44ebd4a1129d3d4cd96cdc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123977">“Our office carried out a performance analysis of the existing J’s as well as the designs that were allowed to be built under the new J-Class Association rules,” Hoek explains. “We analysed the line honours and handicap of all 20 yachts and modelled them in our software in such a way that we could predict performance. A specific handicap system was developed by the J-Class Association for these yachts in order to enable smaller and larger and steel and aluminium J’s to race against each other. This analysis gave us a great deal of insight into the performance differences between these yachts.” “The best five performing yachts were further analysed with computational fluid dynamic software in order to gain greater insight into the differences. The series of yachts originally designed for the Ranger project in 1936 proved to be very good performance-wise, although some are better for light air conditions and others for heavy air.” Optimising Lionheart Originally designed for the Ranger syndicate by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2079">Lionheart</a> is the first yacht to be built based upon this research. Under construction for a repeat customer of Hoek Design, she will be the largest J afloat when launched. Tremendous 17-metre overhangs on a LOA of 44 metres have created a fascinating super J with a maximum waterline length. Hoek: “We extensively optimised Lionheart's structure using 3D structural modelling techniques with finite element software programs. The complete hull structure was analysed for stiffness and torsion, and her stiffness compared to the steel original. The weight of the hull structure was also further optimised, while the hull was developed in high tensile Alustar plating and extrusion materials to provide even greater stiffness. We also carried out extensive research into the mast position, and sail area vs. handicap in order to create a yacht that would perform to her best on the race course.” <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123978/image/large-293714de83fd9877680de6060d29a31b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123978">The cruising option Lionheart is designed for cruising as well as racing, and is therefore being built to MCA classification. She will be one of the very few J-Class yachts available for charter as the majority are not built to class. Her deck layout shows two small deckhouses with sleek and low profiles as well as two small cockpit areas. The privacy concept that Hoek Design created for renowned projects such as <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1842">Adele</a>, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/149">Boreas</a> and the upcoming <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> was also further developed for Lionheart to offer an owner's stateroom with a private deckhouse and private cockpit. Lionheart will also have three guest suites, four crew cabins and a lounge area. The aluminium hull construction got underway in August 2007 at Freddie Bloemsma’s specialist hull yard and will be finished by Claasen Jachtbouw. Lionheart is the 17th yacht to be built to Hoek Design drawings by Claasen. Construction management is in the hands of Nigel Ingram of Marine Construction Management in Newport, USA. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123979/image/large-2655f9070b7bbb318d9e3868fe971fcb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123979"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123980/image/large-794fdfdb1b7665634b79ae602c7fdddf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123980">More J-Class splendour Hoek Design is also presently working on three other J-Class projects, including a replica of the first J ever built. “Enterprise is the smallest of the fleet but will be a strong contender on handicap,” Hoek says. “She will also be built in Alustar to a high technical specification. Her performance will be extensively optimised and she will be built for both racing and cruising.” A second project presently under development is a replica of the famous Tore Holm design, Svea. This is under development for a consortium of three Dutch and three Swedish owners who will use the yacht for corporate racing. “Svea’s hull will most probably be built in Holland and the yacht will then be finished at a Swedish yard,” Hoek reveals. “Svea proved to be a strong upwind performer in our tests and is one of the best looking J’s ever designed.” The third project is a replica of a never built super J by Franck Paine. “This design will be developed along the lines of Lionheart,” Hoek concludes. “She will be another very strong contender in this exciting and expanding fleet of J-Class yachts.” <noscript></noscript>

Lionheart leads the J-Class revival 

SmartRigging has announced that it will supply PBO rigging to the 204-foot schooner <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a>, currently under construction in Holland. This will be the largest project in the world to fit lightweight stays, a revolutionary solution introduced by SmartRigging in 2005. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123472/image/large-b47573bad9e3d191528775f057bc0839.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123472">The <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> project already involved some of the greatest names in the Dutch yachting industry. Designed by Andre Hoek, the aluminium schooner is currently under construction at Holland Jachtbouw. She will be equipped with Rondal carbon masts, and SmartRigging has now joined the team looking to ensure <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> a maximum sailing performance. When launched in the beginning of 2009, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> will be the world’s largest private schooner. SmartRigging will supply all the stays for this groundbreaking project. SmartRigging to supply all PBO rigging to 62 metre Athos

Holland Jachtbouw has announced that it has started construction on the 62-metre schooner <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a>, which will be the largest boat yet built by this premium Dutch yard. Conceived by Hoek Design, the drawings were extensively tank tested at the MARIN institute in the Netherlands, with various keels and rudders being tried out on a scale of 1:10. Combined with wind tunnel tests at the Wolfson Unit of Southampton University (UK), the result is a superb design.<a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a>’s deep-V hull with a shallow draught keel and integrated keel centreboard configuration will give her a gracious aero and hydrodynamic shape. The rig will be highly automated in terms of pushbutton operation, with furling booms, carbon spars and captive winches on sheets and halyards. Despite being among the largest schooners in the world, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> will nonetheless be able to pass the Bridge of the Americas. An 11-metre beam will create an unprecedented amount of volume. The interior will include a private owners’ cockpit and deckhouse, four guest cabins, and a main deckhouse with a formal dining and lounge area. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a>’s unique engine room will house twin main engines with controllable pitch propellers in a space with standing headroom. An exclusive aluminium structure will feature three boarding platforms, two boarding ladders and a wide passerelle. Integrated side platforms will constitute ideal landing possibilities for dinghies, while large deck lockers provide storage for two 29-er sailboats, two optimists, two motorbikes, and scuba gear. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> is earmarked for delivery end of 2008. <noscript></noscript>
