This October, the 82-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cali82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Cali</a> was launched, unveiling the new superyacht to the industry for the very first time. A highly secretive project, the superyacht, Hull 13775 is the first superyacht designed by the yard’s Lead Exterior Designer Jim Robert Sluijter. British studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">RWD</a> has designed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cali82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Cali</a>’s interiors, and in another milestone, she is the first collaboration between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> and the studio since the launch of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Said155.0m (508'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2008">Al Said</a> in 2008.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/292976/image/large-c300998f43ab6d20e25045b0653b12a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/292976">Despite <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cali82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Cali</a> being his first design project to hit the water since joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, Jim was attending the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/183" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show - 2023">Fort Lauderdale Boat Show</a> during her splash. Fortunately, that gave SuperYacht Times the opportunity to sit down with him to find out more about the project, as well as talk about his own path, from working alongside of the industry's top studios, to becoming <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>’s Lead Designer. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291965/image/large-a594dabd47cba9af9a44df3b54d7e71f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291965">How did your career at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>&nbsp;begin – what were you doing beforehand?Well, let's start at the beginning. As a young boy I’d had the amazing opportunity to tour the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> shipyard with Jan Van Lent and having never seen a superyacht before, I was absolutely amazed by the visit. When it came to deciding on my first internship during my Industrial Design course at TU Delft, it felt natural for me to reach back out to the yard that so inspired me as a child and thankfully they took me on.My responsibilities during that time were fairly basic, but it gave me an incredible insight into the superyacht construction industry and showed me how superyacht builders operated from the inside. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/30" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Voogt Naval Architects (Company)">De Voogt</a> had a wall in one of the buildings with all of the in-build projects so when it came to choosing a company to guide my final year project, I stood back, reviewed all of the projects and decided that the Andrew Winch design yacht was the most exciting for me. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/7330/image/large-34cf424c69fef88fba28c515709a84a3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7330">I reached out to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch</a> and asked if I could do my final year project with them, an offer to which they said no. However, they did offer me a six month internship. So I moved to London and joined the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch</a> team, and following my internship they assisted me with the finalisation of my degree before I joined the studio’s exterior design team. I was at Winch for six years, during which time we signed three contracts with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>; <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5624" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aurora74.0m (242'9&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Aurora</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gigia85.0m (278'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Areti</a> (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gigia85.0m (278'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Gigia</a>) and Tis&nbsp;(now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alaiya111.5m (365'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2019">Alaiya</a>), so I became familiar with the Rendsburg facility and many of the team. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45215/image/large-51b9018786f8673d3c7d489cee428dc1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45215">When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alaiya111.5m (365'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2019">Tis</a> was delivered, I decided it was time to do something different, so came back to the Netherlands and joined the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/37" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture (Company)">Azure Yacht Design &amp; Naval Architecture</a> inHaarlem. During that time, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/37" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture (Company)">Azure</a> was working on the naval architecture of Moon Sand, the 55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, and the studio was closely aligned with the yard for any 50-60-metre proposals. Because I had worked with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch</a>, many of these proposals fell to me and so my relationship with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> and particularly Michael Breman, became very strong.&nbsp;After I left <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/37" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture (Company)">Azure</a>, I received a call from Michael asking me to meet him and Peter Lürssen at Schiphol for a meeting, and that turned out to be the job interview for the role I have today.&nbsp;That must have felt like the golden ticket! What was the proposed role?The yard had been looking for an in-house designer to focus on the smaller yacht sector (50-70-metre), to quickly create proposals that could assist the sales team and build on the existing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> portfolio. While the yard is committed to its relationship with external studios, an in-house designer could create a variety of potential designs, to be shown during client meetings at very short notice. Having worked with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> in both my previous roles, I had come to know the yard and its processes very well and Peter and Michael thought I would make a great fit for the role.&nbsp;I joined 4.5 years ago, initially in Rendsburg and then later from home in Amsterdam. During my first year I was creating proposals in that 50-70-metre range, but as the role progressed, it became clear that there was more interest from clients in the slightly larger range of 70-90-metres. The yard has an extraordinary level of expertise and the team is accustomed to working on very large projects. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/292972/image/large-4d0445e96017bc8decc73609440e5db2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/292972">Tell us about&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cali82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Cali</a>, how did the project begin and is it not unusual for an owner to go with a relatively unknown designer?Absolutely and I think that is part of the reason that it is only now that she is launched that we have announced her as an in-house design. In the case of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cali82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Cali</a>, she actually began as a 73-metre proposal sketch and it so happened that the owner in question loved the original exterior design and style, with the only major change being the length. I think for this owner, the fact that I was an in-house designer was less important than the fact that he loved her lines and that Lürssen’s reputation for excellence guaranteed a wonderful end result.&nbsp;The client had a very clear vision of what he wanted. He wanted his next yacht to feature some of the elements he felt his current yacht was missing, namely a beach club and an even larger sundeck with wind protection. He wanted four staterooms on the lower deck, as well as two VIPs on the main deck alongside the owner's stateroom. Unlike many yachts of her size today, the owner opted not to have an owner’s deck, instead having an enlarged sundeck and a sleeker exterior design. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/292977/image/large-87daf37dbe9b3a11abeefcdaf5a977a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/292977">When it comes to your proposals, are you given creative licence, or do you draw inspiration from the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>&nbsp;fleet?One of the best things about working as a designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> is the unequalled access to the yards portfolio of yachts, which enables me to draw inspiration from what has come before and also to match my designs to the capabilities of the yard. For example, when it comes to design intricacies, such as the pool on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cali82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Cali</a>, I was able to call the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> specialist and have a discussion there and then about potential design features or limitations. I am however given freedom to interpret the owner's wishes and I think that is something really unique to both the role and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291962/image/large-1a60c0a4f219b247435b74a38e4d234f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291962">How has the process been for you, launching your first own-design&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>?It has been a fantastic experience. Working alongside the brilliant team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">RWD</a> on the interiors and Kees de Keizer who has represented the owner throughout the process, has been great. In my experience, it has been one of the most seamless build projects, despite the interruption of Covid in the middle. &nbsp;We had a very tight schedule for the build, and often when it comes to the big decision phases, projects sometimes become delayed because owners change their focus during the project and change priorities. This was not the case for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cali82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Cali</a>, her owner was so clear on his ambition with the boat, he was incredibly responsive and we had a fantastic collaboration between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, RWD and the owner’s team.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291963/image/large-2070c3703f5c4d0047a6af6e4c2219da.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291963">Can you share a few of your favourite features of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cali82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Cali</a>?There are many things that I love about this project, but in particular the shapes of the exterior. Not having an owner’s deck allowed us to play with the lines and create a very sleek exterior and then that massive sundeck that could only have happened without an upper deck, is really special. The sundeck has 2.5 metres ceiling height and it is completely open aside from windbreak panels.&nbsp;She has a huge swim platform to accommodate the tenders, a floating dock for the Jet Skis and all other water sports activities. In combination with the pool on the main deck aft this will be the main area for day time &nbsp;activities onboard. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/292975/image/large-9c05ff8d14ed240e801a4dec0c627d68.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/292975">Finally, your first yacht is out there now, can we expect to see more&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>-designed yachts hitting the water?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> is famed for its incredible collaborations with the best designers in the superyacht industry, and this will never change. The work we have done over the past 4.5 years, I believe, has been very successful, but it will only be one string in the shipyard’s bow, though we currently have a few irons in the fire for a next project. I think it is a great addition to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> offering to have an in-house designer that can work alongside the sales team and show owners what is possible on the smaller scale of things.&nbsp;Peter and Michael have been extraordinary mentors, I truly see them as the most respected professionals in the industry and it is amazing to work alongside them. I look forward to whatever it is we do next! &nbsp;

I can't say which, but we have boats that are going to run in silent mode," Moran shares. Completed last year in Rendsburg by the builder, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5624" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aurora74.0m (242'9&quot;)">Aurora</a> is a custom project designed inside and out by Winch Design. She was designed with a large family in mind and boasts generous interior and exterior spaces. On board, she accommodates up to 16 guests over eight staterooms. Here she is spending time in her familiar spot off Cala di Volpe in Sardinia.

With the first unit delivered in 2017 to her iconic Lürssen-built mothership Aurora, the Dutch tender experts at Xtenders are proud to present their D-RIB multipurpose tender. Measuring 9.9-metres with a beam of 3.2-metres, this guest tender is one of the most versatile and comfortable RIB tenders in the impressive Xtenders fleet. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/29820/image/large-db281b0dc0b9bf9e5334e602f181d710.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29820"> Her lightweight carbon hull together with the rigid bulwarks provide an impressively stable and seaworthy platform for transfers in various weather conditions for up to twelve guests and two crew. Further enhancing guest comfort on board is two spacious sitting areas - one in the bow and one behind the helm - as well as an additional sun awning, two fridges and multiple storage compartments. Clients are also offered a number of additional custom features to choose from.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/29808/image/large-afcce587a518220f585c702f9eac3710.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29808"> <img src="/uploads/store/photo/29803/image/large-8c46addd92c723a736d08c5e750a32ec.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29803">The tender's hull design - developed in-house by the Xtenders team - combines a deep-V with multiple scallops that are ideally suited for light boats and provides easy and fast planning and uncompromised grip on the water. Equipped with a 370hp Yanmar engine she has a cruising speed of 25 knots and can easily reach speeds up to an impressive 45 knots without losing the smoothness of the ride.&nbsp;Other notable features on board include the bow, which can be automatically transformed into an open gangway to provide easy access to the shore or facilitate bow-to mooring. The angle of the beachlander can be adjusted to particular beaching circumstances. In order to minimise the storage height to 1.7 metres, the console folds down and a single-post t-top bimini can be electrically brought down using a mechanism developed by Xtenders. In Photos: Lürssen’s new Aurora at anchor in Cala di Volpe

The 74-metre Aurora was delivered to her owner last week in Rendsburg, Germany. Built by Lürssen and with a GT of 2113, she features both an interior and exterior design by Winch Design and was first revealed to the industry earlier this year in March as she emerged from the Lürssen sheds.

Known as Project Gatsby throughout her build, Aurora was sold by Moran Yacht &amp; Ship who subsequently managed her build. Commenting on the project, Moran Yacht &amp; Ship state: “The original contract for this massive ship was signed three years ago and we are pleased to announce that with a superb Winch Design interior and exterior profile, this vessel of complexity and detail was delivered to her overjoyed owner with only one paid change order due to the planning and supervision of the renowned Moran Yacht &amp; Ship new construction team.”

Lürssen’s 74m Aurora delivered

Moran Yacht &amp; Ship is, without a doubt, one of the most successful superyacht brokerage firms in the world. Headed by Robert Moran, the man still very much at the helm opened the brand’s doors in Fort Lauderdale in 1988 after 18 years of exploring the Seven Seas as a superyacht captain, the hands on experience of which Moran strongly insists is at the core of the company’s continuous success in selling and building some of the world’s most iconic vessels.

Today, Moran’s sales record speaks for itself. However, success does not often come without criticism, and for many in the industry, Moran Yacht &amp; Ship is certainly perceived as one of the most boldly aggressive. This perception is founded in an element of truth, but perhaps a little misguided. Moran is an astute businessman who is seriously passionate about the superyacht industry. The aggression that people may perceive stems from being one of the best, knowing it, and consequently becoming increasingly frustrated with others who give the industry a bad name and, in short, throw away potential opportunity. Robert Moran is focused on the bigger picture: the longevity of the industry.

“I don’t think that we’re aggressive,” Moran states as I pose this reputation to him. “I just think that we’re not shy about telling people of our attributes. I mean, we’ve sold 22 Lürssen’s in 17 years, 50% of their production. That’s quite an achievement. A lot of these other companies have a lot of employees who are ex-insurance salesman. Now, there’s nothing wrong with insurance salesman, or attorneys or stock brokers, but they didn’t work in the marine industry. And all of a sudden they work for two years in the yachting industry and they’re experts? That doesn’t work for me.”

His ballsy, no-nonsense attitude is not limited to his peers and competitors, however. He’s also a staunch believer of shirking the typical ‘yes-man’ treatment of clients. “Most guys in the business think they have to shower these people with platitudes,” he says, “but we don’t do that.” Of course it could be a different story in reality, but from our meeting in the US yachting hub of Palm Beach, it’s probably safe to say that his anti-baloney attitude is very much present within every element of his life. Here Moran tells us the brands’ story in his own words.

As a brand you talk a lot about being different to other brokerage firms. What specifically sets you apart from your competition?

I think what sets Moran Yacht &amp; Ship apart from a lot of our competitors is that we’re a really tight knit group made up of a lot of people who have worked on yachts. When it comes to selling large yachts, you have to really know what you’re talking about and it takes a long while to get that experience. On top of that, we build. The necessary experience for selling these boats can only be gathered by being involved with projects and actually building boats. If I was a potential yacht buyer I wouldn’t go to a brokerage company that didn’t have the experience of building at least 10 yachts.

What’s the secret to creating fruitful relationships with your clients?

I find the best way is to be yourself and to be honest. Don’t be false, you don’t need to kiss their backside or butter them up. Just be yourself. People recognise that. They recognise your talents and they respect that. I’ll tell you something else; we have the lousiest offices in the yachting world. I do not need palatial offices in central London or any of that. If I’m going to spend money, I’m not going to spend it on flashy baloney. It doesn’t make sense. A lot of our clients walk into our offices and see the projects on the wall, everybody working hard… I mean, we have captains of industry in our office who are genuinely impressed. They like that it is a working office. I’ve been into offices where they have stewards in dickie bows serving drinks and canapes. Now that’s baloney.

You have five offices located in strategic yachting spots around the world, with your head office centred in Fort Lauderdale. Are you looking to expand further?

We’ve had an office in Monaco for around six years and we’ve just expanded that to a significantly larger office. We’re quite frugal, we don’t throw our money away. I haven’t got the ego where I need to have three secretaries and someone to answer my telephone calls and to send all my emails - I can do that myself. We are a very profitable company because we watch our costs and watch our expenses.

You’ve mentioned that Moran Yacht &amp; Ship has sold around 50% of Lürssen’s production. How did your relationship with the yard begin?

We deal with a lot of shipyards - right now we’re building a boat with Hakvoort, Oceanco, Lürssen, we’ve just done a boat in Italy with Mangusta, we’re building a boat with Sanlorenzo… so we’re not necessarily ‘stuck’ with just one or two shipyards. But Lürssen up until 1993 or 1994 had only built around seven yachts. They decided in the late 90s to get into the yacht building business. I remember meeting with Peter Lürssen and Michael Bremen, and I told Peter we have a client who wants to build a 60-metre yacht. He said to me, ‘Well, if you bring me two clients, I’ll build them.’ We brought him two: Capri and Phoenix, and we went from there.

Speaking of Lürssen projects, the 74-metre Aurora (previously known as Thor and first announced in 2014) was recently launched from the yard’s facilities in Germany. What stands out to you in regards to that project?

She’s just a great boat. She’s 74-metres and she has a GRT of almost 2300, which is just a massive volume. She has some wonderful features, eight cabins, 10-metre tenders, a huge spa, gymnasiums - everything - but she is just a really lovely, quality boat. She is a boat that is going to be sailing around for 50 years, and she’ll still look great in 50 years.

<div>I was there with some of the guys at the launch and - just a silly thing - when you walk up the stairs from the aft deck, the owner said he wanted a nice, relaxing seat, sort of a pedestal area. I thought that was mad. When the owner walked on for the very first time, the first thing he did with his wife is sit on this seat. On itself it wasn’t a big thing, but it struck me that something as small as that made a difference to the owner - the first thing he did on the boat was to sit in this spot and say, “I really like this.”</div>

You also just sold the 85.1-metre Lürssen superyacht Solandge at the end of March after 10 months on the market with Moran. Tell us about the deal.

We originally sold Solandge in 2008 to the owner who just sold the boat recently. A lovely boat with beautiful features. She had been on the market prior to being listed with Moran Yacht &amp; Ship with another brokerage company for 18 months, so it’s quite an achievement to have a boat of that magnitude for just 10 months and we got the job done. We don’t just like to list boats, we like to sell boats. Too many company’s reason to be is just to get the listing on the boat - somebody else sells it, they get a piece of the action. We want to list them, sell them, do it all.

Does the company typically attract quite experienced clients?

Not necessarily, but I much prefer to deal with clients who have got some experience in yachting - they really understand us. They really get Moran Yacht &amp; Ship. They know what we bring to the party. Unfortunately, I see so many guys coming to boat shows who, to their credit, have worked hard and made a fortune, but they they walk around and they have no idea. When a broker they approach knows just a tiny bit more than them, that broker then becomes the ‘expert’. That’s not good.

Tell us about your most memorable project over the years.

That’s a tough one. We built the 87-metre Ace a few years ago for a great guy. Now when we were designing the boat he told me that he wanted to have his gymnasium right on the aft deck. I told him that’s a bad idea… that’s not what you’re supposed to do. He told me that he wanted it and it’s his boat. He built the boat for himself, and I thought that was great.

A lot of yachts are cookie-cutter boats… basically. So I like it when you first see it and you say to yourself, ‘That is really nuts.’ Then you see it again and you begin to realise that it’s really, really cool.

Tell us a little about what you’ve got going on right now.

We’re not really allowed to talk about many of the things that we’ve got going on… So right now we’re building eight yachts, all of which are currently under construction, we’re looking to sign hopefully another three this year. Every year for the past 20 years, we’ve delivered one or two yachts. Everyone in the business thinks that we can’t possibly be building all these big boats, and every year they keep on coming out. So we’re going to do the same thing this year. Next will be Solar, then next year there will be two boats, three in 2019… so we’ve got a good pipeline of boats. I believe success breeds success, and hopefully the smart guys will come to us because they know that our record speaks for itself.

Bannenberg &amp; Rowell Design

British design studio Bannenberg &amp; Rowell were one of the first of many respected brands to have supported the upcoming SuperYacht Gallery London event. With their studio based in Fulham, Bannenberg &amp; Rowell has long recognised the significance of London as an important location with regards to their own clients. Commenting on their participation, Dickie Bannenberg says: “The Saatchi Gallery is pretty much on our own turf so we were immediately excited at the SuperYacht Gallery concept, and looking forward to presenting the work of designers and shipyards in this unique Gallery context.”

Winch Design

Established in 1986 by Andrew Winch, Winch Design has built up an impressively iconic portfolio over the past three decades. Just a few of the studio’s most recent significant superyacht projects include the 74-metre CRN-built Cloud 9 which was launched at the beginning of this year in Italy, the 83-metre Amels-built Here Comes the Sun which was delivered to her owners in January, and the 74-metre Aurora which was launched by the renowned German shipyard Lürssen in March.

Diana Yacht Design

With their vast experience working closely with a wide range of superyacht owners, the team at Diana immediately recognised that the philosophy behind the SuperYacht Galelry was something in which the industry is lacking and in need of. The talented and driven team will be on site at Saatchi Gallery next month to showcase some of their most important projects to date.

“This is a great opportunity to be a partner in the birth of a new event,” states the studio. “The team at SuperYacht Times, headed by Merijn de Waard, know the business inside-out and the reason why they came up with a new event is because the market is clearly demanding this. Espen Oeino

As the designer behind some of the world’s largest yachts, Espen Oeino has become a well-known name in the world of luxury yachting. The Norwegian-born artist will bring his trademark charisma and professional demeanour to a city as cool and iconic as the yachts that he designs.

Oeino clearly sees the benefit of a new type of event such as SuperYacht Gallery: “SuperYacht Gallery is a show concept that is really focused on business-to-client relationships rather than the typical business-to-business we see in many traditional boat shows. Claydon Reeves

Claydon Reeves has also announced that they plan to reveal their latest exciting project at the event, demonstrating their belief that SuperYacht Gallery London is the right place to showcase their latest work and ideas to not only the industry, but to the superyacht owners that drive these projects into becoming a reality. “We have chosen to unveil our latest project, something equally as unique and ground breaking as the SuperYacht Gallery, at this well-conceived event. Over the three days we will present an idea that breaches the benchmarks we know so well in an effort to deliver something truly spectacular.”

The studio says: “With an office based in Kensington, we attend a number of events in London and cross paths with many of the industry’s key players. Studio Indigo

Relatively new to the world of superyacht design, Studio Indigo made a significant impression on the superyacht industry last year with the launch of Feadship’s 70-metre Joy, featuring a chic interior from the drawing boards of the studio. Designers at SuperYacht Gallery London

On schedule for an early summer delivery, the new 74-metre motor yacht Aurora has left Lürssen’s Rendsburg facility in Germany on an unseasonably snowy late-April day to conduct her first sea trials following the yacht’s launch last month.

Winch Design is behind Aurora’s exterior and interior who has delivered a timeless and classic profile with a generous interior that is said to continue the elegant theme.

Project Gatsby, as she was known throughout her construction, was sold by Moran Yacht &amp; Ship who also managed the build of the yacht.

Lürssen’s 74m Aurora embarks on first sea trials

The following aerial images give us a better view of the various design elements of the new Lürssen superyacht Aurora that was launched over the past weekend.

SuperYacht Times photographer Tom van Oossanen is in Rendsburg, Germany right now to capture the launch of the 74 metre Lürssen Aurora. While full details have not yet been disclosed it is believed she is the 74 metre project which was announced by Moran Yacht &amp; Ship in March 2014 as Thor. It is believed that both the exterior and interior design of Aurora are by Winch Design.

Exclusive: Lürssen unveils 74m superyacht Aurora

Moran Yacht &amp; Ship have announced the signing of a contract to build a 74 metre (242 Ft.) superyacht, which will be known as project Thor.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/147680/image/large-628e970c26edc549c95d3333f4a9240e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/147680">This completely custom, full displacement motor yacht will feature interior volume larger than any other 74m (242 Ft.) floating today. While many of the details are still confidential at this point, we can say that Andrew Winch Designs will be responsible for both the interior and exterior of the vessel.The vessel will be built at the Lurssen Shipyard in Germany, who have earned a reputation for yachts built to the highest standard of quality. The shipyard has achieved this through a highly skilled workforce, constant innovation, and four generations of shipbuilding experience.The Moran Yacht &amp; Ship New Construction Team will continue to work with the Owner and shipyard to manage the build process from concept to completion. The New Construction Team are excited to carry on their excellent working relationship with the Lurssen Shipyard and Andrew Winch Designs.Moran Yacht &amp; Ship are confident that after a seamless build process, Project Thor will continue the world-class superyacht pedigree of Moran Yacht &amp; Ship and the Lurssen Shipyard.
