Daphne D'Offay, Senior Charter Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/136" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Independence (Company)">Ocean Independence</a>, has been in and around boats for many years, first as a stewardess, then as a broker. In 2009 she joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/136" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Independence (Company)">Ocean Independence</a> and has been an active member of IYBA for sixteen years. Francesca Webster caught up with Daphne during last week's <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palm Beach International Boat Show - 2022">Palm Beach International Boat Show</a> to find out a little more about the state of the charter market in 2022. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/221844/image/large-8b69f470244af618c496e6c01245daee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/221844">Tell me your story, how did you get into yachting?I was born and raised on the water, originally from South Florida my parents owned a 30 foot Hunter sailing yacht and we spent most of our spare time on the water. Like many people who grew up around boats, I tried to work elsewhere training as an Occupational Therapist, but I felt landlocked and came back to Florida to explore other options. My mum had worked in yacht brokerage and ended up needing some help during a boat show – the rest is history really!I first worked on boats, and then Kent Chamberlain gave me a shot with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/659" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Chamberlain Yachts (Company)">Chamberlain Yachts</a> and that was my very first job ashore. I began as an assistant to Kent and he really allowed me to try a lot of things and learn on my own.&nbsp;When his charter broker left I took over a few boats, and really learnt how to operate on that side of the market. The team at Chamberlain Yachts gradually grew and I had gained some great connections who helped me in those early years. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/99385/image/large-dd480f5183fe121538f81013c23b7cb8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99385">What was it about charter brokerage that appealed to you over sales?For me it was the travel, wanderlust aspect. I came from the position of crew and have done a lot of travelling over the years with my family and as such I felt confident that I knew that sector very well, versus the technical side. I wouldn't say I'm a sales person, even though I'm in a sales business; I can talk about charter very openly, honestly and transparently without that having to lead to a sale. That type of conversation comes very naturally in charter, because clients want to travel and have the passion to do so, if a client doesn't like one boat that isn't really a problem because there is always another, better suited vessel out there, which is not always the case with sales. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/99386/image/large-c25860de668f42910f032be8f6d5004a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99386">When a client comes to you and says "I want to charter in the Med but i've never been on a yacht" how do you find the perfect vessel for them?It is really about asking the right questions. If you don't have a real standard for how you approach a client and get all of the information from them in a conversation, you will never find the right fit and there will always be things you miss. I also think experience is really integral in this industry.One of the best things about <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/136" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Independence (Company)">Ocean Independence</a> is that we have such a large team that works well together. If a new client approaches you and is looking for something that you don't have experience in, there is a real flow in the company of assisting one another and moving clients to brokers who have more experience is that area. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/99383/image/large-30fa0a64275b752464a18cf72428c5b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99383">You are in your 13th year at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/136" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Independence (Company)">Ocean Independence</a>, what drew you to this brokerage house?I was very lucky to begin my career under Kent, he was a great mentor, but I wanted to know more about global regulations vs just local. As I mentioned before there is a lot to be said about working for a large and dynamic brokerage house because there is a massive amount of expertise under one roof. This really ensures that our clients receive the best possible service, both in sales and charter.&nbsp;What would you say are the biggest challenges facing charter brokerage in 2022?For one inventory, many yachts have been taken out of charter due to either sale, or their owners wishing to move the vessel into private use. That has meant a few very strong charter yachts have left the market over the last year. This has really been exacerbated by the massive uptrend in demand for charter which means that many yachts are booked out for the coming seasons, both in the Med and in the Caribbean.Another major issue we have faced in the US is that as of November the British Virgin Islands have created a regulatory application for charter licensing in its waters, and yachts have been fined for not having their permits. The result is that many yachts have abandoned the BVIs, or are on a waiting list for months at a time meaning that they miss the season completely. &nbsp;The result is that we have turned to the Bahamas as an alternative, and while the Bahamas are beautiful, they haven't always had the same demand as the BVIs. The Grenadines have also benefitted but the islands are a little further away for US charter clients. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/99384/image/large-88737caf5328018e1a97099974f01f7e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99384">Finally, what do you think is the secret to gaining and retaining charter clients?Knowledge is really important but you also need to have an open personality that allows people to share their experience honestly – feedback is how you learn. You aren't just selling someone a commodity and walking away, you're hand holding all the way through and personalising it. The only way you can do that is by knowing all of the people involved, the destinations, and the people on the ground to make sure everything moves smoothly.&nbsp;

(Company)">Christensen Shipyards</a> in 2016 and changed ownership last year after having been listed for sale at $30,900,000. With an interior design from the neighbouring design studio <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/companies/varo-interior-design" target="_blank">VARO Interior Design</a>, the spacious yacht, just shy of 500 GT, has luxury and contemporary spaces throughout and features a nautical-themed decor, with furnishings by Hermes and Jean Michel Frank in the VIP suite.

The region of New England in the USA is a perfect illustration of ‘the great outdoors’. It is a big place with an even bigger appetite that offers not only some of the world’s best seafood to feast on, but enough natural wonders to satisfy anyone’s craving for adventure. Outdoor scenery aside, New England is full of American history and has a cutting-edge culture as a consequence.<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/99385/image/large-dd480f5183fe121538f81013c23b7cb8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99385">When cruising along New England’s 5,000 miles worth of Atlantic coastline on board a luxury superyacht, guests can expect to spend their days relaxing on deck admiring the boundless skyline, the rolling rocky peaks of the Appalachian mountains and the ever-changing foliage. With some of America's prettiest inland lakes offset by cascading cliff faces, New Englanders have many opportunities for fishing, swimming, surfing, sailing and sunbathing and will soon become accustomed to the fresh perfume sent down from the surrounding evergreen pine and birch trees.<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/99365/image/large-e403fc0b901fdca44477609256240998.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99365">Someone who knows the New England area well is Captain Jesse Clinton, who, speaking from Florida Keys in mid-April, has already had a long stint on board the 46-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2060" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Avalon46.0m (150'11&quot;)Delta Marine2009">Avalon</a> after taking the decision to protect the vessel and crew by staying isolated during the global coronavirus pandemic. Along with the rest of the world, the attention of those onboard Avalon was captured by the rise of COVID-19 and vacation plans were affected. “The plan was to get home, but we only made it halfway,”&nbsp;Jesse explains.<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/99362/image/large-2bcb7ce23521737f432a08f9801b2c74.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99362">With nine full-time crew members on board, all of whom make the 2009 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> superyacht an extremely comfortable boat to spend time on, even in corona-isolation, the team have had plenty of time to plan their summer quietly cruising along the coastline of the USA’s northeasternmost state. Here, Captain Clinton shares just a few of their ideas for the trip and a sweet insight into what he knows as a returning visitor to a small part of the world called New England.<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/167070/image/large-6ce9ead98933a24c097d045edae023d1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167070">KennebunkportOnce collected by your crew and welcomed aboard, start off by relaxing making the most of the ready-prepared champagne lunch. Next, the chic and preppy seaside town of Kennebunkport is a pleasure to meander around and nose around in the local stores with their local delicacies such as cheese, syrup, beer and wine. Maybe a nearby pancake house can lure you in for an afternoon pick me up. If a sweet treat doesn’t cut it, try a refreshing walk along one of Kennebunkport’s beaches and see why the town has become a popular vacation spot, or head off and find the white-brick lighthouse, history museum and rustic stone church with ocean views. <img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/167071/image/large-b4d8c50e0144d5282a12acea82b4670e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167071">PortlandAfter a good night's sleep, wake up to the morning light uncovering Portland’s Old Port and surrounding lighthouses. As a fun and funky small city, Portland comes with a fine hipster vibe with lots of great restaurants and coffee shops. Spend the afternoon exploring the excellent museums, galleries and green spaces, stopping off mid-way for a taste of some of Portland’s fine locally brewed beer. When everyone has had their fill, arrange to be collected and brought back to the yacht for an evening hiding beside one of the small islands off the coast of Portland. Watch the sun go down with dinner on board followed by an outdoor cinema screening under the stars.<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/99384/image/large-88737caf5328018e1a97099974f01f7e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99384">Bath and Boothbay HarborOvernight, the 30 nautical mile journey north ends in Bath, a city famous for its shipbuilding and maritime history which can be admired from the deck during a leisurely brunch. Today is the ideal time to get a grasp of the all-encompassing scenery that makes New England. The network of rivers will make for an exciting cruise through jagged cliff-lined waterways with good chances of seeing unusual wildlife along the way. Not too far back out towards the North Atlantic is Boothbay Harbor in Lincoln County, Maine which is a working waterfront town with a rocky coastline, charming village shops and lighthouses. Here, you can hop off and take the footbridge across the harbour to the town's East Side for dinner in one of the many large dockside seafood restaurants - but not before using the last of the afternoon light to go whale watching.<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/167074/image/large-ddad188dae04d6c2e9378d956bf43d82.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167074">Camden and Penobscot BayAnother 45 nautical miles along the line is Camden, one of the prettiest sites in Maine. Framed against the mountains of Camden Hills State Park, Camden is best enjoyed on a scenic cruise around Penobscot Bay up to the mouth of the Penobscot River. Take note of the preppy upscale nature of the community and the contrasting Native American culture and the tangled forests on the surrounding remote islands.&nbsp;Like many places in New England, Camden has a history of shipbuilding and was the place where the six-masted schooner George W Wells was built in 1900, which set the world record for the most masts on a sailing ship. Come evening, kick back and relax on the beach and make a campfire. For dinner, a big New England clambake and lobster boil is always a huge hit.<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/99380/image/large-2bebb4b327009500566906ad8f2c0930.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99380">Acadia National Park and Bar HarborNow is the time to enjoy getting lost in isolated anchorages and taking part in some wonderful daytime cruises. See bald eagles soaring overhead as you meander through the inland waterways of the Penobscot area until the Cadillac Mountain range comes into view followed by the town of Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island. The views along the way are worth any amount of time spent on deck, drink in hand.&nbsp;Jutting out into the water is the iconic 110ft-high pink-granite Otter Cliffs in Acadia National Park, but don’t stop there. Go even further and explore the National Park and its landscape draped in woodland, rocky beaches and glacier-scoured mountain peaks such as Mt. Cadillac, the highest point on the United States’ East Coast. Keep an eye out for moose, bear, whales and seabirds along the way.<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/167073/image/large-b657b739002c5c4eb27427648992fbd6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167073">Roque Bluffs and Bar HarborNot too far from Bar Harbor (as protests to stay are almost guaranteed) lies Roque Bluffs, a spot which should provide a sighting or two of the local whale population. Don’t forget your camera, as the impressive stretch of beach and beautiful archipelago make for a perfect shot. Have a few hours at the beach or explore the five nearby hiking trails. Head back towards Bar Harbor along with many other yachts and lobster boats to gaze at the stunning coastal beauty one last time.<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/167072/image/large-76b608abf895ce58244db65e55fbc735.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167072">Nova ScotiaThe thrillingly rugged and wild Nova Scotia comes with a new batch of towering red cliffs, striped lighthouses and quirky fishing towns. Take a trip to Peggy's Cove and the UNESCO site Lunenburg, or go further afield to the Annapolis Valley vineyards. For a heavier dose of nature, the coastline of Cape Breton, the Kejimkujik National Park and the fascinating Bay of Fundy are perfect options. In less than a month, the Newport Yachting Center will once again dress the city’s waterfront in couture yacht fashion as it hosts the annual Newport Charter Yacht Show. Scheduled from June 17 to June 20, the event is the only one of its kind in the U.S. and features a collection of world-class luxury charter yachts – from 80 feet up to the super yacht size of 150-225+ feet – showcasing their glamorous offerings to hundreds of attending charter yacht professionals in search of the perfect size and fit for their clients.
