The market town of Lymington can be found on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent, in the New Forest district of Hampshire, England. Set on the coast and with a rich maritime history behind it, there is plenty for the visitor to do, whether it’s visiting a quirky cafe on the high street to pick up your obligatory ‘nice cup of tea’, or hopping across on a ferry to the neighbouring beaches of the Isle of Wight. Looking at this sleepy setting from the outside, however, you might never guess that this also serves as the base for our next interview subject, British superyacht design maestro, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark Berryman</a>. For anyone familiar with the British designer’s work, the casual elegance and oriental motifs found throughout his working environment will come as no surprise, as well as the shelves of tasteful and natural interior fabric samples tucked neatly away. We sit down over lunch and chart the course of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>’s career so far, only occasionally interrupted by friendly interjections from Miff the office dog.Untangling the web of superyacht designers in their early years can be complicated. For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>, it began close to home when his brother Jim - also a designer - decided to dive into a new industry after seeing a project by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/41" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Donald Starkey Designs (Company)">Don Starkey</a> in a magazine. Shortly after graduating in Interior Architecture, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark</a> received a call from Jim asking if he’d like to come for an interview with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/41" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Donald Starkey Designs (Company)">Starkey</a>, and, before he knew it, he had landed the job. With the help of his new colleagues, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> taught himself computer-aided design for the first time and was ready to get stuck in. The next major part of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>’s formative years consisted of a decade at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a> with Steve Howard and Jonny Horsfield before he took the major step of setting up shop for himself and founding <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark Berryman Design</a> in 2007.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101168/image/large-aefbe24d0200c914e551e2eb45970890.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101168">&nbsp; The client for the 73.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3066" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Naia73.6m (241'6&quot;)Freire Shipyard2011">Naia</a> (previously Pegaso) followed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark</a> and gave him his first signing. Only a few months later, he also took on the 61.7-metre Mary Jean II before being approached by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> to design the interiors for one of the most important boats in his career: the 60-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1193" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caipirinha60.0m (196'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2009">Caipirinha</a> (previously Arkley) which had been started for a client who then opted to upscale to an 80-metre mid-way through the build.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101167/image/large-8e75ccf3199c1f7ef463276e5d0fbe31.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101167"> As <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> explains, “They knew we were a young design studio and were willing to give us a chance, asking if we could take this on as a production boat. We had just two months to design the whole boat, so we did two decks a month and I started doing it on my kitchen table before we’d even moved to our first premises.” Enter <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Imperial Yachts (Company)">Imperial Yachts</a> into the scene with a new client and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> was able to continue with the project until its completion. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>&nbsp;were very kind: they said, ‘we’ve told the client that if he buys the boat, you would be the designer.’ That project was an absolute pinnacle, for both us and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Imperial Yachts (Company)">Imperial</a>, and she even won Motor Yacht of the Year in the World Superyacht Awards in 2010. For&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Imperial Yachts (Company)">Imperial</a>, it was their first large boat and it was our first time working with Russian clients. We’ve done a lot of work with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Imperial Yachts (Company)">Imperial</a>&nbsp;since then.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101169/image/large-322d88a83d1f4bf107c3542cdc434d6f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101169"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/101170/image/large-022b84be4078b264539bc8e9c0789b6f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101170">Although the years following <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1193" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caipirinha60.0m (196'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2009">Arkley</a> have been busy for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>, we largely have to take his word for it. As is frequently the case for superyacht interior designers, much of the studio’s hard work will never be seen by the outside world. “I look back at longer-established yacht design studios and they’ve got such great portfolios they can show. As for us, we’re in our thirteenth year now and a lot of people don’t know a lot about us. We’ve never advertised and the work keeps coming in by word of mouth so hopefully we’re doing something right, but I would like to be able to put some more images on our website and say, look, we did this!”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101171/image/large-edc5df637262c39712178a500dab8aaa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101171">He continues, “As the years go by, there are more NDAs to be signed. I look at the projects we have done with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a>&nbsp;and I have often said to him, whether it’s a 50-metre or a 150-metre superyacht it’s out there and people can see it, this isn’t the case for us.” Speaking of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a>, the Norwegian superyacht design heavyweight is the man behind the exterior lines of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>’s largest publicly known superyacht to date, the 136-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6424" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flying Fox136.0m (446'2&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2019">Flying Fox</a>. Although he remains unsurprisingly reticent about the details of her interiors, it is clear from talking to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> that crafting the interiors for 100-metre+ boats brings with it a whole new set of challenges. “At that size, there are many regulations to consider and it is paramount to get them right. When you’re building and designing at that scale you want to give your client something that nobody else has, and although there are certain design factors which you must always take into account, with the right planning, you can achieve this whilst still creating something truly spectacular for your clients.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/100548/image/large-01ed583736086a5c18b99a6e3ebdf4b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100548">And what is it that characterises a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark Berryman</a> interior? “Our interiors are contemporary with clean lines and hints of Asian influences. I have a real passion for Japanese design and we like to use natural finishes such as bamboo and rattan. We’re also all about the tactile side of design. Our aim is to encourage owners and their guests to come into a space and be drawn into the materials and finishes.” Every client and superyacht project requires a fresh approach and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> has been pushed outside of his comfort zone on many occasions. This includes his involvement in designing the interiors of the 65-metre Admiral <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7032" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Life Saga65.0m (213'3&quot;)Admiral2019">Life Saga</a> where he was given a somewhat enigmatic design brief by the experienced owner. “The owner was looking for an interior that was simultaneously remarkable, calming and laid back. He said, ‘think of my interior like a cappuccino and add a little more milk in some areas and a little bit less in other areas’, and this really resonated with me.” Furthermore, as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> explains, he is often challenged to think outside of the box by his clients. “I love to design our in-house style with its Asian influences, but for someone to turn around and say, ‘I want this in a baroque style’, this means that I need to do some research on this and learn more. It makes you better as a designer because it’s opening you up to new ideas.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/100543/image/large-de7b816283b6e737ae53c57a4c1d7395.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100543">Over the years, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>’s oeuvre has also included numerous significant refit projects, including a recent reworking of the 115-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Pelorus</a>. “It was nice because we could keep a lot of the original detailing that complements our design DNA, whilst still making it our own.” Whether it is a 60 or a 130-metre vessel, a new-build or a refit project, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> is always looking to create interior spaces in which his owners and guests feel truly relaxed – something which takes significant effort to achieve. “We want people to kick their shoes off, walk through the boat and fall into a sofa without a care in the world. You don’t need to stand on ceremony to use our spaces. The clients that we design for have made their money doing a fantastic job in the businesses they’re involved in, but their lifestyle is so full-on. When they finally get time to truly relax, it’s important to make the most of that. Of course, it takes a lot of work to make interiors that look effortless, but it’s worth it to see the response from our clients.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/13181/image/large-a4cc84e2794fb398c0913f2359a26725.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13181"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/101172/image/large-f92858062a010617ba9bf9ba572e383b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101172">Going forward, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> has plenty to keep himself busy with, including a rare exterior design project for a previous client on an 85-metre superyacht, but that doesn't mean he'll be changing his approach to design, with his team remaining small and family-focused and keeping that all-important personal touch. Podium was built as Linda Lou by Lürssen in 2006 as part of a very successful 60-metre series which include the likes of Solemates (now Huntress), Arkley (now Caipirinha), Phoenix (now Avanti), and Lady Kathryn V. Designed by Espen Oeino, today Podium is finished in a navy blue hull, following a refit that was completed by Feadship in 2015. Her interior design is the work of Zuretti.

Top superyacht sales of 2015

After having had her on display at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, Imperial Yachts have announced that the 60 metre Lürssen built superyacht Arkley has been sold. Imperial was involved in the yacht’s operations since the construction period at the shipyard, and following the delivery of the yacht, acted as operational manager and Central Agent for charter before becoming exclusive agent for the sale of the yacht.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157375/image/large-8ec51a9c648af1987a41bf3e4fe4debf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157375">Arkley was launched in 2009 at the German shipyard and was awarded the World Superyacht of the Year trophy in 2010. On Monday the Lürssen shipyard launched their third superyacht of 2010, the 60 metre Katie Sue II. Like her near sisterships Linda Lou and Arkley, Katie Sue II features exterior design by the Monaco based studio of superyacht designer Espen Oeino. Superyacht Katie Sue II launched by Lürssen

The main deck foyer there welcomes the guests in a very luxurious and contemporary ambience. The different materials and details which have been used on the yacht are noticed immediately and can be easily recognized throughout the yacht. The centrepiece with the artwork is surrounded by oak panels, there is marble on the floor. As a feature, part of the oak is in a wave pattern. The walls lining the side of the main staircase are out of leather panels and the handrail, covered in woven leather, makes for an inviting detail. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129606/image/large-94ea89501356e6758d015a602cbf2bf7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129606"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129607/image/large-c316e0d42dd379c2989209866f1bc980.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129607">The hallway separates the owners’ area forward from the main salon aft. Going forward is not just a straight corridor, there are several shelves for books on starboard and a crew access door and day head on the portside. The corridor leads into the owners’ private accommodation, where you first enter the owners’ study. The study’s walls are out of bamboo and leather panels and it has Zebrano doors. The floor of this passageway is out of bamboo and makes for a very sensuous walk. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129608/image/large-292d7a49cf91bc8a823d8f76d5cbbd86.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129608">The study leads onwards into the full beam owners’ suite consisting of a luxurious sleeping and a lounging area, elegantly decorated with a variety of unusual and softly textured fabrics in neutral tones. As with all the guest suites, the windows are dressed with low noise, state of art electronic blinds which add to the relaxing comfortable ambiance of the private areas of the boat. In front of the bed there is a large television screen and on both sides of the screen entrances to his and her dressing rooms providing ample storage for personal possessions. On the starboard side of the suite there is a discretely positioned mini bar. A heated floor ensures that you will not leave this beautiful oasis. The bathroom offers a bathtub and a very generous shower and steam bath and an equally generous space for the head and bidet. The two wash basins have been specially designed for Arkley as the owner requested something special and new. The front of the basin is out of glass and the water-faucet cannot really be seen as it is integrated in a shelf. The specially designed and manufactured “Arkley waves” decorate the ceiling and the square pattern in the carpet follows the same square pattern as in the ceiling. A rich carpet completes the splendid feel of this area. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129614/image/large-6a055c59e91803303fefc107f8c7fedf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129614">Going aft from the lobby into the main salon you first have the main dining with a large table made out of ‘Bog Oak’ with a centrepiece out of silver leaf. The shape of the centrepiece is the same as in the carpet and in the ceiling where gold leaf is used. An extravagant centrepiece which includes a large television screen separates the salon from the dining area. Additional cushions provide casual seating on the floor and the space can be completely blacked out for proper cinema experience. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129620/image/large-d25268a56c6d98fe22013475688bd3ad.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129620">The upper deck offers a fifth guest cabin – the VIP cabin - with spectacular large windows. Entering this suite your attention turns to the beautiful bench which is made out of an very old oak log. A masterpiece which needs to be touched and felt. The design elements which have been used throughout the yacht are repeated here as well. The “Arkley waves” in the ceiling, a woven oak wall which leads into the bathroom and a Zebrano panel at the back of the bed. The marbled bathroom is big and shower and toilet are both separated with glass doors. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129621/image/large-828666440f62ab0d6f7eccc42eefb064.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129621">The upper deck salon is laid out very generously and is one open space even though it offers the guests different areas for entertaining: a beautiful designed bar, an extravagant seating area with incredible teak art pieces which invite your touch, two gambling tables and a television area midst of all. The television area is quite unusual as it features two television screens on opposite sides of the wall with comfortable couches below. Large vertical windows arranged in a semi-circle form the shape of the wheelhouse and allow for optimal visibility. A large elevated sofa offers a good viewing position for guests. The bridge offers much space to get all the necessary materials such as maps, manuals and books in order. The aft sliding doors recede smoothly fully into the structure and lead you to the large aft sundeck. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129632/image/large-b40f3d8600798294549e40a74b0d1611.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129632">The sundeck aft has multiple uses. A nice dining table with an integrated air-conditioning in the ceiling offers an airy place for enjoying breakfast, lunch or dinner. A large sun bed invites not only for sunbathing but also for spending a night under the stars. A rescue boat is hidden under this sun bed and when the mattresses are removed it also functions as a stage. A Karaoke system can be plugged into the ceiling to provide for entertainment. Much space has been given to these cabins to create comfortable areas for relaxation. The guest can choose between two double bed and two single bed cabins which can be converted into double beds. Here as well you find the “Arkley waves” in the ceiling. The walls are covered with fabrics and include leather panels with integrated television screens. Extra large portholes provide much natural light. As is normal on a yacht of this size, the crew has a separate staircase. Forward on the lower deck, there is accommodation for 14 crew members. The very large crew mess is on the bottom deck with an equally large and fully-equipped laundry, as well as extensive storage, including walk-in freezers, cool room and dry storage. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129635/image/large-76c0e2d8f8a6e9f4846770f901542d82.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129635"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129636/image/large-aa10e5a445c6e542358ae57e39d2e4ca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129636">Powered by two Caterpillar engines of 1,455 kW each, she reaches a top speed of 15,5 knots and has a range of 7.000 nm. Advanced sound and vibration features guarantee an extremely quiet running yacht. She is fitted with zero speed stabilizers and lies comfortably on the water. From the engine room, a watertight door gives access to the tender garage which has large lift-up doors on either side. One tender on each side as well as a large selection of sports equipment e.g. jet skis, sea bobs, bikes are stowed here. From the huge bathing platform you have direct access to the professional equipped diving room. SuperYacht of the week: the 60m Lürssen Arkley

Following her launch at the end of May, The Lürssen Arkley, has now started her seatrials. She is built in full accordance with the rules of Lloyds Register and the MCA. Lürssen presents Arkley at the Monaco Yacht Show 2009

Following the launch of the 110 metre Darius in April, Lürssen launched the second superyacht of 2009 last Friday, M/Y Arkley. Lürssen launches 60m superyacht Arkley

Yesterday saw the launch of Darius, the first superyacht over 100 metres to launch in 2009. Darius was launched from the Lürssen Shipyard in Bremen yesterday afternoon and will be delivered this summer. Lürssen launches 110m superyacht Darius

With five deliveries in 2008 Lürssen has had one of it's busiest years. The 155m Al Said, 70m Martha Ann, 60m Vive la Vie, 110m Dilbar and 78m Madsummer, all left the yard for their cruising grounds. 2009 will see three deliveries of yachts between 60 and 110m. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127042/image/large-954af22de7fedecb6781b8a05618cc50.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127042">Arkley is a 60m superyacht and delivery is planned in June 2009. The exterior design is by Espen Oeino and the interior by Mark Berryman. The interior design is a combination of a modern but also very classic style which is carried throughout the whole yacht. Scout will see delivery in October 2009. In February 2009 project J24 was launched in the traditional fashion: down the slipway. She is an 84m superyacht with exterior and interior design by Andrew Winch. Delivery will be in 2010. With several further superyachts currently under contract, the shipyard markets and builds superyachts ranging in size from 60m up to well over 100m.
