These yachts have a total length of 5,658 metres, an average length of 83.2 metres and an average volume of 3,456 gross tons (GT). The 2019 Mediterranean Yacht Show draws to a close

In Pictures: The Mediterranean Yacht Show 2019 comes to a close

The 5th edition of the Mediterranean Yacht Show is taking place this week in the Greek town of Nafplion. From 28 April to 1 May 2018 one of the region’s largest yachting events will once again attract some of the finest charter yachts operating in and around Greek waters ahead of another busy upcoming summer cruising season in the Mediterranean.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/33269/image/large-3de7f24e6ef976c9c59332322fad474f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/33269">Organised by the Greek Yachting Association, the event aims to strengthen charter possibilities in the region by promoting the beautiful scenery the Greek coastline has to offer along with the facilities available to charter yachts and guests while making the most of its largely pristine and untouched cruising grounds.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/33270/image/large-eec26ba47367e9e9af942f40c6a039e4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/33270">This year’s charter fleet will consist of nearly 90 vessels ranging from small day-cruisers to ultra luxurious pedigree superyachts such as the 59-metre Capri, 50-metre Ouranos and 42-metre Ability.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/33271/image/large-79c138d40d958e37a37f0ce145d66be3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/33271">In addition to the exciting line up of yachts, visitors and crew have the annual Chef’s Competition to look forward to as well. Mediterranean Yacht Show 2018 kicks off this week

Moran Yacht &amp; Ship is, without a doubt, one of the most successful superyacht brokerage firms in the world. Headed by Robert Moran, the man still very much at the helm opened the brand’s doors in Fort Lauderdale in 1988 after 18 years of exploring the Seven Seas as a superyacht captain, the hands on experience of which Moran strongly insists is at the core of the company’s continuous success in selling and building some of the world’s most iconic vessels.

Today, Moran’s sales record speaks for itself. However, success does not often come without criticism, and for many in the industry, Moran Yacht &amp; Ship is certainly perceived as one of the most boldly aggressive. This perception is founded in an element of truth, but perhaps a little misguided. Moran is an astute businessman who is seriously passionate about the superyacht industry. The aggression that people may perceive stems from being one of the best, knowing it, and consequently becoming increasingly frustrated with others who give the industry a bad name and, in short, throw away potential opportunity. Robert Moran is focused on the bigger picture: the longevity of the industry.

“I don’t think that we’re aggressive,” Moran states as I pose this reputation to him. “I just think that we’re not shy about telling people of our attributes. I mean, we’ve sold 22 Lürssen’s in 17 years, 50% of their production. That’s quite an achievement. A lot of these other companies have a lot of employees who are ex-insurance salesman. Now, there’s nothing wrong with insurance salesman, or attorneys or stock brokers, but they didn’t work in the marine industry. And all of a sudden they work for two years in the yachting industry and they’re experts? That doesn’t work for me.”

His ballsy, no-nonsense attitude is not limited to his peers and competitors, however. He’s also a staunch believer of shirking the typical ‘yes-man’ treatment of clients. “Most guys in the business think they have to shower these people with platitudes,” he says, “but we don’t do that.” Of course it could be a different story in reality, but from our meeting in the US yachting hub of Palm Beach, it’s probably safe to say that his anti-baloney attitude is very much present within every element of his life. Here Moran tells us the brands’ story in his own words.

As a brand you talk a lot about being different to other brokerage firms. What specifically sets you apart from your competition?

I think what sets Moran Yacht &amp; Ship apart from a lot of our competitors is that we’re a really tight knit group made up of a lot of people who have worked on yachts. When it comes to selling large yachts, you have to really know what you’re talking about and it takes a long while to get that experience. On top of that, we build. The necessary experience for selling these boats can only be gathered by being involved with projects and actually building boats. If I was a potential yacht buyer I wouldn’t go to a brokerage company that didn’t have the experience of building at least 10 yachts.

What’s the secret to creating fruitful relationships with your clients?

I find the best way is to be yourself and to be honest. Don’t be false, you don’t need to kiss their backside or butter them up. Just be yourself. People recognise that. They recognise your talents and they respect that. I’ll tell you something else; we have the lousiest offices in the yachting world. I do not need palatial offices in central London or any of that. If I’m going to spend money, I’m not going to spend it on flashy baloney. It doesn’t make sense. A lot of our clients walk into our offices and see the projects on the wall, everybody working hard… I mean, we have captains of industry in our office who are genuinely impressed. They like that it is a working office. I’ve been into offices where they have stewards in dickie bows serving drinks and canapes. Now that’s baloney.

You have five offices located in strategic yachting spots around the world, with your head office centred in Fort Lauderdale. Are you looking to expand further?

We’ve had an office in Monaco for around six years and we’ve just expanded that to a significantly larger office. We’re quite frugal, we don’t throw our money away. I haven’t got the ego where I need to have three secretaries and someone to answer my telephone calls and to send all my emails - I can do that myself. We are a very profitable company because we watch our costs and watch our expenses.

You’ve mentioned that Moran Yacht &amp; Ship has sold around 50% of Lürssen’s production. How did your relationship with the yard begin?

We deal with a lot of shipyards - right now we’re building a boat with Hakvoort, Oceanco, Lürssen, we’ve just done a boat in Italy with Mangusta, we’re building a boat with Sanlorenzo… so we’re not necessarily ‘stuck’ with just one or two shipyards. But Lürssen up until 1993 or 1994 had only built around seven yachts. They decided in the late 90s to get into the yacht building business. I remember meeting with Peter Lürssen and Michael Bremen, and I told Peter we have a client who wants to build a 60-metre yacht. He said to me, ‘Well, if you bring me two clients, I’ll build them.’ We brought him two: Capri and Phoenix, and we went from there.

Speaking of Lürssen projects, the 74-metre Aurora (previously known as Thor and first announced in 2014) was recently launched from the yard’s facilities in Germany. What stands out to you in regards to that project?

She’s just a great boat. She’s 74-metres and she has a GRT of almost 2300, which is just a massive volume. She has some wonderful features, eight cabins, 10-metre tenders, a huge spa, gymnasiums - everything - but she is just a really lovely, quality boat. She is a boat that is going to be sailing around for 50 years, and she’ll still look great in 50 years.

<div>I was there with some of the guys at the launch and - just a silly thing - when you walk up the stairs from the aft deck, the owner said he wanted a nice, relaxing seat, sort of a pedestal area. I thought that was mad. When the owner walked on for the very first time, the first thing he did with his wife is sit on this seat. On itself it wasn’t a big thing, but it struck me that something as small as that made a difference to the owner - the first thing he did on the boat was to sit in this spot and say, “I really like this.”</div>

You also just sold the 85.1-metre Lürssen superyacht Solandge at the end of March after 10 months on the market with Moran. Tell us about the deal.

We originally sold Solandge in 2008 to the owner who just sold the boat recently. A lovely boat with beautiful features. She had been on the market prior to being listed with Moran Yacht &amp; Ship with another brokerage company for 18 months, so it’s quite an achievement to have a boat of that magnitude for just 10 months and we got the job done. We don’t just like to list boats, we like to sell boats. Too many company’s reason to be is just to get the listing on the boat - somebody else sells it, they get a piece of the action. We want to list them, sell them, do it all.

Does the company typically attract quite experienced clients?

Not necessarily, but I much prefer to deal with clients who have got some experience in yachting - they really understand us. They really get Moran Yacht &amp; Ship. They know what we bring to the party. Unfortunately, I see so many guys coming to boat shows who, to their credit, have worked hard and made a fortune, but they they walk around and they have no idea. When a broker they approach knows just a tiny bit more than them, that broker then becomes the ‘expert’. That’s not good.

Tell us about your most memorable project over the years.

That’s a tough one. We built the 87-metre Ace a few years ago for a great guy. Now when we were designing the boat he told me that he wanted to have his gymnasium right on the aft deck. I told him that’s a bad idea… that’s not what you’re supposed to do. He told me that he wanted it and it’s his boat. He built the boat for himself, and I thought that was great.

A lot of yachts are cookie-cutter boats… basically. So I like it when you first see it and you say to yourself, ‘That is really nuts.’ Then you see it again and you begin to realise that it’s really, really cool.

Tell us a little about what you’ve got going on right now.

We’re not really allowed to talk about many of the things that we’ve got going on… So right now we’re building eight yachts, all of which are currently under construction, we’re looking to sign hopefully another three this year. Every year for the past 20 years, we’ve delivered one or two yachts. Everyone in the business thinks that we can’t possibly be building all these big boats, and every year they keep on coming out. So we’re going to do the same thing this year. Next will be Solar, then next year there will be two boats, three in 2019… so we’ve got a good pipeline of boats. I believe success breeds success, and hopefully the smart guys will come to us because they know that our record speaks for itself.

​Oasis in St Barths, Caribbean

Recently seen anchored off the Caribbean island of St Barths is the 60-metre motor yacht Oasis. Having retained her original name since being launched in 2006 at Lürssen, Oasis changed hands in 2009 after a successful career as a charter yacht. She is one of the German builder’s most luxurious vessels and forms part of a long line of 60-metre sisters including Capri, Podium, Huntress, and Lady Kathryn V.

It has been an active past 12 months on the brokerage scene, with a number of high profile yachts being listed for sale and various 60+ metre sales having had taken place. Here we take a look at just some of most notable transactions that have occurred in 2016.

Leander G

Constructed by the German shipyard Peene-Werft in 1992, the popular charter superyacht Leander G found a new owner in February this year. Her original owner was Vice Admiral Sir Donald Gosling KCVO RNR, a member of Britain’s Royal Yacht Squadron, and was often used by the British Royal Family, notably Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip on a tour of Britain, as well as Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall in the Caribbean.

Leander G features naval architecture and exterior design by Kusch Yachts, whilst her interior was undertaken in a joint venture by Pauline Nunns Associates, Katalin Landon and Heinz Vollers.

Elandess

After having only been listed for sale for two months earlier this year, the 60-metre Elandess was sold in April after having been listed for €52,500,000 through Burgess. She was sold by broker Glynn Smith at Denison Yacht Sales in the company’s largest deal to date.

Built by Abeking &amp; Rasmussen in 2010, Elandess is styled by Donald Starkey and features a stunning interior by Bannenberg &amp; Rowell Design. The yacht has subsequently been renamed Elysian following the change of hands.

RM Elegant

72 metre superyacht RM Elegant was announced sold by Camper &amp; Nicholsons in April this year with Adam-Michael Papadakis having had represented the buyer and the seller.

Complying with passenger vessel regulations, the 2005-built vessel is capable of accommodating 30 guests across 15 staterooms, with an impressive master suite spanning an entire deck.

Ester III

In certainly one of the most unique and controversial brokerage deals of the year, the 66-metre Ester III found a new owner after having been ordered to sell following the ruling of a Gibraltar court.

Sold by Fraser Yachts with Burgess representing the buyer in the deal, the Lürssen built superyacht was renamed Iroquois shortly after the sale and has since made her way to Barcelona. 

Positive Carry

Moran Yacht &amp; Ship announced the sale of the 62 metre Feadship Positive Carry in June this year. The sale of the 2005-launched yacht was handled together with Cecil Wright &amp; Partners.

Originally launched as Rasselas, she features expansive outdoor areas including a touch-and-go helicopter capability and superbly designed interiors. The superyacht offers accommodation for 12 in six cabins.

Capri

The 58.6-metre Lürssen superyacht Capri changed hands in November after having been listed for sale by Burgess and Y.CO. Parsifal Yachting represented the buyer in a deal reportedly valued at €24,950,000.

Built by Lürssen in 2003, Capri features naval architecture by Lürssen whilst Glade Johnson Design undertook both her interior and exterior design. Constructed out of steel and aluminium, she has a Gross Tonnage of 1,226 and is Lloyd registered.

Meridian

Now named Party Girl, the 62-5-metre Icon superyacht Meridian was sold in July after having been listed through Rob Newton at Superyacht Sales and Charter at an asking price of €57,500,000.

Completed in 2012 by Icon Yachts and marking the third superyacht to come out of the Dutch shipyard, Party Girl delivered in 2013 as Maidelle. She features a timeless exterior design by the British studio Redman Whiteley Dixon Ltd., while her interior comes from the drawing board of Cristiano Gatto Design.

Solemar

Another 60+ metre sale in April was Solemar – the 61.5-metre Amels superyacht built in 2003. Solemar was listed for sale by Matt Albert at Yachting Partners International, with Curtis Stokes of Curtis Stokes &amp; Associates representing the buyer in the deal.

With a stellar record as a successful charter yacht, Solemar has been kept in good condition since her launch. She accommodates up to 12 guests over six luxurious cabins, consisting of a VIP cabin in the bridge deck, four double cabins on the lower deck, and an expansive split level main deck master suite.

Lady Lara

Y.CO announced in March this year that the 59.3-metre Benetti superyacht Lady Lara had been sold. At the time of sale, she was listed at an asking price of €35,000,000.

Lady Luck as she is now known, features naval architecture by the in-house team at Benetti and exterior design by Stefano Natucci. Studio Massari Interior Architecture and Design were responsible for her opulent interiors, with all interior furnishings hailing from the Fendi Fashion House.

Genesi

A year after her launch in Ancona, Italy, and two months since she made her international show debut in Monaco, Wider Yachts has announced today that their Wider 150 superyacht Genesi has been sold. Golan Levi from Swell Yachting represented the Canadian buyer.

The super silent diesel-electric yacht, now known as Bartali, is the Italian shipyard’s first superyacht. The 50-metre Cecilia is currently under construction with construction on the new Wider 125 to commence early next year.

Top 10: largest yacht sales of 2016

After having been listed for sale by Burgess and Y.CO, the 58.6-metre superyacht has found a new owner with Parsifal Yachting representing the buyer. Capri was listed for sale at €24,950,000.

Titania and Capri now available for charters in Greece and Turkey

The latest superyacht to join the growing charter fleet of International Yacht Register is the 62.97 metre Polar Star. Superyacht Polar Star joins charter fleet of IYR

In March 2010 the 59 metre superyacht Capri arrived at Dunya Yachts, as her new owners had selected the Turkish shipyard for a range of works, including a full repaint of the hull and superstructure. The refit team of Dunya Yachts has just informed SuperYachtTimes.com that they have successfully completed the refit. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131873/image/large-d98e560f64f36d33d936295423a348d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/130558">The shipyard features one of most extensive and impressive refit facilities in the Mediterranean with a 5000 ton floating dock, 4500 square metres of climate controlled sheds and an 80 metre covered dry dock, which is the only covered and climate-controlled dock in Turkey. The refit division has a highly skilled on-site team with English speaking project managers who work with both local and the most renowned international subcontractors. Dunya Yachts completes refit of Lürssen superyacht Capri

This winter the 59 metre Lürssen superyacht Capri arrived at the Dunya Yachts shipyard in Istanbul, Turkey. Among other work, the refit team of Dunya Yachts will completely repaint the hull and superstructure of the superyacht, using Awlgrip Paint Systems. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/130558/image/large-44697993a2d52bf1a7568a22f2cdabd5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/130558">The refit division of Dunya Yachts has an expert team on site, as well as local and international sub-contractors for any required work. Also in order to cope with refit progress, Dunya have set-up an independent planning department. This summer the company will make further investments by extending their covered drydock to service larger yachts. By Merijn de WaardIn 2004 the Monnickendam based Hakvoort shipyard launched the 46m Flamingo Daze, today known as Allegria. Allegria was designed by Glade Johnson with naval architecture by Vripack. Early 2007 she was sold and her current owner made substantial improvements to the yacht, making her one of the most popular charter yachts. Do we look at other yachts? Yes, we look at yachts all the time!!! We believe in full displacement yachts that are environmentally advanced, with modern styling. Owner: We built Capri. We will probably build again. SYT: Have you made any modifications to Allegria? Owner: We have made substantial improvements. While the yacht was awesome when launched in 2004, we decided to invest and bring Allegria up to the highest level of luxury and capability possible. Here are a few of the additions/improvements:<ul> <li>Completely new VSAT communications system with VOIP capability throughout the yacht. High speed Internet 24/7. </li> <li>Completely new computer server system allowing Internet access, email, etc. throughout the yacht. </li> <li>Completely new audio/video system including two Kaleidescape servers (this is the only boat I know that has two of these systems), new wireless touch panels throughout the yacht, extensive music and movie library on-demand (no DVDs to load or previews to sit through!), Xbox 360 + games, etc. </li> <li>Revamped generator system to become even more environmentally friendly. </li> <li>Interior remodel including adding multiple temperature-controlled wine storage cabinets, owner cabin private mini-bar refrigerator, new bookshelves, updated galley for prep frig, and on and on. Improvements are too numerous to list. </li> <li>New exquisite art work throughout the yacht. </li> <li>New silverware, china, guest amenities, etc. </li>

Owner: We have used Moran Yacht &amp; Ship for many years. And of course they work with other brokers for chartering Allegria.SYT: What do you think of the yacht industry in general? Do you think something should change? Owner: We love the yachting industry. There is so much more that can be done to protect oceans and marine habitats; we look forward to the yachting industry taking a leadership role in marine conservation efforts.SYT: What is the biggest joy of owning a yacht? Owner: There are so many. Here are some we love:<ul> <li>Leaving a port at night and standing out on the deck watching the harbor and the town lights slip away. </li> <li>Heading into a full moon on a calm night. </li> <li>Gathering family and friends for some of the best times of their lives – with all the laughing and joy that comes with it. </li> <li>Watching dolphins race the bow </li> <li>Having a champagne picnic on a white sand beach and seeing absolutely no one – no boats, no people – just nature.  </li>

Do you plan to visit any remote destinations? Owner: We have travelled extensively throughout the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Adriatic, as well as the Caribbean. We love many places. Places like Montenegro and Santorini are breathtaking, but still my personal favorite is the Exumas. We have a lot more of the world to see.SYT: What do you like to do onboard? Owner: We love to just “be”. Our goal with Allegria is to create a very unique experience – one that is not forgotten. That is how the crew is trained. So, we usually vary our itineraries from hip places like Ios, Greece, for the nightlife to beautiful peaceful white sand beaches that you can only find with a yacht. We enjoy fine foods and wines, watching movies, and listening to music.
