Onboard, the superyacht has many standout features such as the dedicated wellness area on the lower deck, complete with beach club and swimming pool. Built by <a href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/companies/crn" target="_blank">CRN</a> in 2013, she is the shipyard’s largest yacht to date at 2,451 Gross Tonnes. The Italian shipyard Construzioni e Riparazioni Navali (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN Spa (Company)">CRN</a>) was founded in 1963 by Sanzio Nicolini and began building yachts from 15 to 20 metres. During the 1970s, the shipyard moved into construction of yachts over 30 metres and went on to deliver larger yachts of up to 61 metres during the 1980s to Greek and Middle Eastern owners, among others. Their average last asking price was €17.1 million per yacht or €21,760 per GT. CRN has spent this week preparing for the launch of its new 79-metre motor yacht CRN 135 in Ancona, Italy. Once completed, the project will be the second longest vessel ever built by the Italian shipyard after its 80-metre flagship from 2013, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2029" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Chopi Chopi80.0m (262'6&quot;)CRN Spa2013">Chopi Chopi</a>.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/64217/image/large-dd38b934da11feb4763584806e213075.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64217">Designed by Studio Zuccon International Project, with an interior by Laura Sessa and engineering by CRN’s in-house team, this 79-metre project will be characterised by large volumes, a sleek design and true Italian attention to detail. With 44 years of business and over 100 yacht projects under their belt, the studio of Zuccon International Project has stood firmly in the magnificent city of Rome since the company's inception. Headed by Giovanni and Paola Zuccon, they are currently paving the way for their son and daughter duo to ultimately take over… if the ever-passionate, ever-Italian Giovanni can tear himself away, that is. Here Giovanni tells us more about the history and philosophy that make Zuccon, Zuccon, and why he has decided to substantially invest in the future of superyacht design with the studio’s focused research department.

You and your wife Paola established Zuccon International Project an impressive 44 years ago this year. Tell us about the beginnings of the studio.

My wife and I were both raised in Rome have a strong personal and professional connection to the city… though I have to admit I find this unfortunate. Rome is a beautiful city but it is not as pleasant to live, that’s for sure! The nautical side of our studio began in 1976, and yes, Paola and I established the studio three years previously in the same year that we married. We met at university where we both studied architecture. I’ve always been drawn to design, and as a child I spent countless hours sketching and drawing, but I didn’t have a particular connection to yachting… that is something that has developed over time! Today we still focus on residential architecture projects, but that probably comprises around 30% of our business, with 70% solely focused on the nautical sector.

When Ferretti bought the CRN shipyard in 2000, did that open a lot of doors for you?

Yes indeed, the year 2000 was a notable milestone. We also worked for Bertram when Ferretti bought that shipyard some years previously, until the yard was sold by Ferretti. When Ferretti bought the CRN yard we started to then design more and more larger yachts. Our most recent milestones were in 2005 and 2007, when our daughter and son, Martina and Bernardo, joined the team at Zuccon International.

Both Martina and Bernardo have worked within the Zuccon team for a number of years, with the ultimate goal being that they take over from Paola and yourself. Do you have an exit plan?

For us, it was very important that both Martina and Bernardo came into the studio and, yes, eventually they will take over the family business. As for the exit plan… well, exiting is the most difficult thing to do! The entrance, introducing Martina and Bernardo to the company, has been easy. But leaving is another thing altogether. If I’m honest, I don’t want to leave!

Martina: 
	I can tell you that the entrance is not easy! Our parents are helping Bernardo and I by working alongside us and guiding us, but it is a big responsibility for my brother and I to maintain the reputation of the studio whilst also making something different and fresh from what our parents have built up over the years. We’re making the transition in leadership very slowly so that we can be certain that we can continue the studio’s success. It is not easy to run a successful design studio and the best experience you can get is on the job, day by day. It’s the only kind of school you can go to learn this.

You’re also in the process of building a new office in Rome, designed by Zuccon, of course. This is a huge investment of both time and money - what prompted you to undertake the task?

Paola and I over the years have moved around several offices, and by 1984 we had bought the current premises in which we sit. Last year we began building a new headquarters - it’s going to be beautiful! It will be ready in one year’s time. There are going to be huge parking spaces for the team, nice surroundings, beautiful vistas of Rome, a swimming pool, a tennis court… and there will be a park around it. Oh, and the new studio will also be for Paola and I to enjoy, so we’ll never really be gone! Together with our team we are taking care of the design, and, in addition to our work, there will also be an association that is specifically focused on research and development.

ZED research - your R&amp;D department - was introduced last year. Does this focus on the department in the new building mean that you will be investing more in this side of the business?

Yes. We will invest approximately the 15% of our total turnover into ZED research. We’re now studying new philosophies and new content that will be put into new projects... Zuccon International is selling ideas. What happens is that almost all the shipyards do not wish to invest in research. All they are asking for is projects, and in a short period of time they want to have new projects. So since the shipyards are not doing any research at all, we realised that we had to it ourselves. It’s something that works - research and projects, hand-in-hand.

Do you think more people need to invest in R&amp;D in order to progress the industry?

Well, after visiting the latest shows, I’m trying to understand many elements of design that people are bringing to the fore. I mean, shipyards and designers are producing boats that lack any design logic at all. At Dusseldorf I saw a black yacht. A black yacht! You can cook an egg on a black boat that’s been under the sun. I also wonder why there are these new forms of boats where you can barely figure out how to get on board. These observations are really part of my academic view: there is good design and there is bad design. If you design something that is beautiful but it is not practical, then you have created a sculpture, not a piece of architecture. Yachts have to be pieces of architecture.

Shipyards, designers and all owners will have to make an effort in the coming years, and bring the original condition of a yacht vessel to back to life. This is the philosophy that Paola and I are encouraging Bernardo and Martina to bring to the studio when they eventually take over. The automotive industry, the aviation industry - they are all far more advanced than the yachting industry. This is because they do a lot of research. It is a problem within the culture. I mean, the industry is indeed small, but that shouldn’t count as a justification to not invest in research. I’m investing in the research myself, and I hope that by talking to others in the industry about it more people will follow.

You mentioned working with the Ferretti Group, and you’ve worked a lot with the Group over the years in a very fruitful relationship. Do you think that working so closely with the Ferretti Group has limited you in some ways?

Personally I feel that the positive outcomes vastly outweigh the negative aspects of this relationship. One of the main contributors to a good design lays in the relationship between the designer and the shipyard. We managed to experiment a lot with Ferretti, and we’ve grown with them over the years to where they are today as the Ferretti Group. Over the years, we had the opportunity to collaborate with two persons: Norberto Ferretti for the Italian superyacht industry, the only person in the world that I know of that could build a boat from beginning to end with his own hands, and Lamberto Tacoli, whose abilities and specific expertise are really unique.

The negative aspects… well it is the problem of having one customer only. If you are working only for one client you cannot allow yourself to disagree, necessarily, with this client. We chose to work with just one client, but we also work in other aspects of architecture and design. When the nautical industry went through the Crisis that also meant we had something to fall back on. We do not want to be limited and without a doubt if we were not working with Ferretti we would be working with different people and other shipyards… and that is what we will be doing in the future for sure.

How will Ferretti cope with that, as many Italian yards are quite fierce competitors…

This is true, they are fierce competitors. As a professional rule, we have decided to never undertake competing projects. That is an ethical choice. In the next few years we will of course work with different projects and different shipyards, and we will be working out the practicalities of that as we go into the future. In the last months we have received a lot of requests from shipyards. In the past, our answer has always been no… but we’re looking at changing this in the near future.

Can you tell us why the change in heart after all these years?

There is new management in the Ferretti Group that sometimes disagree with Giovanni Zuccon’s ideas, but now they work very well with Bernardo.

Can you tell us more about what we can expect in the immediate future?

Probably the newest project from us, the 74-metre Cloud 9, is one of my most memorable. In two years CRN will launch the larger project, and she will probably be even more beautiful. It’s always the next one that is the most beautiful. Other than that, we have the Superconero 50 with CRN, as well as some 50+ metre projects in the pipeline but I’m afraid we can’t tell you more!

The countdown has started, with just three months to go to the biggest nautical trade show in Italy, scheduled from 1st to 6th October 2014. "The Genoa Boat Show," said the Boat Show Manager Alessandro Campagna, "is an important vehicle for promoting and raising awareness on Italian excellence in the nautical and tourist fields, ever marked by quality and tradition, with an increasingly international audience. Grace E, like her predecessors Exuma and Galileo G, is part of the Group's project for relaunching the historic Picchiotti brand name in the world of large motor yachts. She was completely refitted in 2008 in The Netherlands. The initial refit included some interior and exterior changes, and replacing some machinery and systems. Midway through the refit, the owners, already pleased with the refit progress, requested even more work, which in total required nearly 18 months to complete. As a result, the yacht is now in great condition. 80 Metre superyacht Chopi Chopi delivered

Superyacht designer Zuccon International Project, ended 2012 with the November 17 launch of superyacht J’Ade, a 60 metre designed By Zuccon and built by CRN, which was followed by the January 12 launch in Ancona of Chopi Chopi, an 80 metre superyacht, also built at CRN. These two milestones have been the start of the Zuccon Superyacht Design brand, a new division set up to focus exclusively on the study and customisation of new large superyacht projects. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142576/image/large-3480b56639e53b99fd6766248f6e52b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142576">Zuccon International Project began designing superyachts with the 46 metre Al Fahed back in 1986, built of steel and aluminium at the Baglietto shipyard in Varazze. This launch was followed by various other projects of different sizes, which have added to the Rome based studio’s yacht design experience. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142577/image/large-5cfbd973f029192eadabe9038dfac7cc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142577">The studio started working closely with the CRN shipyard in Ancona, which has built many of Zuccon’s projects, such as the 60 metre Blue Eyes, the 43 metre Lady Trudy and the 60 metre Darling’s Danama, to mention just a couple of the most recent projects. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142578/image/large-dc0c3608dab8ad2437049868c4924306.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142578">The designers are currently working on the completion of five superyachts: in addition to the 80 metre Chopi Chopi and the 60 m J’Ade (CRN 125), it has a 74 metre yacht (CRN 131) and two 43 m semi-displacing yachts under construction. With more and more large yachts on the design table, the studio has decided to launch a new brand: Zuccon SuperYacht Design. Zuccon International Project or ZIP already had a division focussed primarily on the larger superyachts, but the establishment of Zuccon SuperYacht Design gives a further boost to this field of work, while maintaining strong ties with the brand’s history, tradition and design heritage. Zuccon SuperYacht Design will be primarily under the responsibility of the new generation in the studio, Martina and Bernardo Zuccon, the daughter and son of the studio’s founders. Serene has seven decks, a hangar and two helicopter landing pads. Inside, I discovered several interesting features, such as the 100 square meter beach club, which is accessible from stairs leading down from the main saloon. First passing the two huge tender bays, one of which will hold a special Riva tender, guests arrive in the beach club, which features a massage room, a sauna, and a huge swim platform. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142353/image/large-b330248a72d3eb6cd1cbe3cbf635cb4e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142353">With a gross tonnage of 2365t, Chopi Chopi offers extraordinary space to her guests, which comes close to 1300 m2 in total, with 770m2 of outside deck space devoted to guests. Moving forward from the main deck saloon, which can only be described as palatial in size, one first passes the main lobby which has a circular staircase wrapped around a glass elevator, which connects all of the guest decks. The lobby gives access to the owner’s private office, which features a fold down balcony. Forward of the office, there are 4 guest suites, all similar in size, yet different in styling. A large full beam VIP cabin can be found all the way forward on the main deck. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142354/image/large-af5442ab68c0a9a6ad949261e9aa2674.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142354">The bridge deck offers another huge saloon, connected with a large covered aft deck. Forward, passing the bridge deck lobby, one enters into a beautiful bar area that has a backlit onyx bar, whilst the orange drink cabinets add a dash of colour to the room. The formal dining room is next, which has two dining tables, as well as doors that open up to both side decks. The bridge is a large open space, and is a remarkable design. It offers the crew incredible visibility, almost 270 degrees, allowing them to just about look towards the stern of the yacht. The designer, Gianni Zuccon of Zuccon International Project explained the design of the bridge: “This choice underlines the fact that the goal of design must be conceiving the product as the result of a clear merger of linguistic considerations with ergonomic and functional factors”. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142355/image/large-56e6aacb4cd602715c6dc9d1f479962c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142355">One deck higher one finds the owner’s private deck. A large suite, measuring 240 m2, includes his and her’s bathrooms and dressingrooms, as well as a private foredeck with a Jacuzzi. Aft of the owner’s lobby there is a staff cabin, and a private intimate tv saloon, which opens up to the Helicopter deck. Apart from a tender arrivals lobby, the lower deck, and sublower deck are both devoted to the crew. Chopi Chopi will carry a crew of 23, as well as 10 additional staff for the owner. CRN prepares for launch of 80 metre superyacht Chopi Chopi

The CRN shipyard takes on a brand-new, extra-large challenge: vessel number 129, built of aluminium and steel, and measuring 80 metres - making it the largest yacht ever built in Ancona. The CRN 129 represents another example of the successful working relationship between the CRN technical staff, who handled the naval architecture, and the firm Studio Zuccon International Project, who designed the external layout. At the request of the owner, the interior will be designed by Laura Sessa Romboli. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126662/image/large-3761a7a3d5416b4962f9cfc63ba834e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126662">“This project represents both an amalgamation and a further development of the distinctive characteristics and the innovative soul of the most recent superyacht to be turned out under the CRN name,” declares Lamberto Tacoli, President of the shipyard in the Marches Region. “Large dimensions, roomy spaces, sinuous forms and soft design lines, plus painstaking attention to detail and onboard wellbeing, along with an artful interplay of lights and, last but not least, a direct connection to the sea.” This 80 metre CRN megayacht has been custom designed to meet the precise requests of her owner. On the main deck, the yacht features 6 guest suites with balconies and terraces over the water, while the owner has a completely private deck. The owner and his family can enter this private deck by using the elevator or by landing with a helicopter, which can land on the aft section of the owner’s deck. Forward on the owner’s deck is a bedroom, a large bathroom, a beauty shop and two large walk-in closets. After crossing the lobby and continuing in the direction of the stern, we come across a TV room and a cabin for the staff. Outside, towards the bow, is a whirlpool, while the aft deck is designed for rest and relaxation, furnished with comfortable sofas and armchairs. The crew of this superyacht totals 30, including the Captain, while 7 members of the owner’s personal staff are housed in 4 cabins found on the main deck. The owner’s passion for wine has transformed the below-decks area, reached from the lower deck, into a fully fledged wine-tasting and cellar facility, holding up top 1200 bottles, while the rest of the space below-decks is taken up by a storage facility, the laundry and a number of utility spaces. Aft on the lower deck is a beach club, measuring over 100 m2, formed by a hatch which folds out to become a spacious beach platform. The relaxation area continues inside, with a gym and a spa that includes a sauna, a fully-fledged Hammam and a massage area. CRN Ancona presents 80 metre superyacht
