For 150 years, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> has remained under family ownership, steering the course of German yacht building from its pioneering days in 1875 to the forefront of large yacht innovation today. At the helm, Peter Lürssen continues to balance this deep-rooted legacy with the evolving demands of modern yacht construction: navigating the challenges of sustainability, technological advancement and the shifting perceptions surrounding yachting’s environmental responsibilities.In this conversation with Francesca Webster, Peter reflects on the moments that have defined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen’s</a> place within the superyacht industry, from early milestones to the pioneering steps the shipyard is now undertaking. We have done this many times in our history, when one window closes, you look for another that opens. But no matter what you do, you depend on your team and it is important to bring your team along and listen to them. Legacy is a great and demanding word and to live up to it, you need a constant flow of ideas – some excellent, some not so excellent – to move in the right direction.We try to harvest input from all levels, from skilled labour on the shop floor to engineers and the commercial teams, encouraging them to contribute ideas for the future. As a family, our role is to gather and translate those ideas into producing better and more exciting products, while retaining decision-making within the family. Hopefully, those decisions are based on a clear understanding of what is necessary and what is feasible within our possibilities.We have done many things right and a few things wrong but it is important to have a culture where people acknowledge mistakes. There is no single genius decision that sets the path, we need to keep innovating, whether that is in hybrid propulsion or filtration systems for engines. What is available on the market is not always enough. My great-grandfather built the first motorboat in 1886 and it is our challenge now to create a similar change for the future. We are working on it.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/364230/image/large-a5da9d4eafa733eb6f39e202e402e63c.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/364230">You mentioned your great-grandfather’s pioneering steps in 1886. Are there other defining moments that have shaped&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen’s</a>&nbsp;reputation in yacht construction?We need to differentiate between our early history and when we started working in yachting in earnest. We built motor boats, including 15 and 20 metre models in the early 1900s and 1920s, but since 1988, we took a significant step into yachting with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Island</a>. She was an outstanding yacht with a fabulous owner, who motivated us as a shipyard, supporting our ambitions to build our first large yacht.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limitless96.25m (315'9&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1997">Limitless</a>, the 96-metre built in 1997, which is still one of &nbsp;the largest US-flagged vessels, was another important milestone, allowing us to learn how to build large yachts. It is not simply about adding ten metres in length – complexity grows exponentially and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Island</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limitless96.25m (315'9&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1997">Limitless</a> helped us understand this.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Pelorus</a>, launched in 2003, also made a significant impact on the yachting scene with an incredible design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood</a>, which has been referenced many times by others since. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rising Sun138.6m (454'9&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2004">Rising Sun</a> was technologically a very interesting project, with its extensive use of glass, which was ahead of its time. Everyone talks about glass now, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rising Sun138.6m (454'9&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2004">Rising Sun</a> was already there twenty years ago with her massive glass façades.These projects, among others, illustrate a continuous construction of large yachts that has really helped us grow and refine what we can offer.You have referenced hybrid propulsion, alternative fuels and the need for cleaner yachts. What role do you see these technologies playing in the future of large yacht construction at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>?One of the biggest challenges in yachting is aligning with climate goals and reducing CO2 emissions, making the development of more efficient and ‘greener’ yachts essential for the wider acceptance of yachting. We are researching and investing heavily in this process, as is every major shipyard, although there is not yet a clear single path forward.We believe methanol holds a lot of potential regarding usability and energy density and we have the advantage of working with a very supportive client who has allowed us to install a methanol fuel cell on a project. However, as with all research and development at the forefront of innovation, achieving full reliability while pioneering new technologies is challenging. These processes take time and recalibration, but I am optimistic we will get there and methanol will become a very promising option for the future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370565/image/large-d1ccd73f6afba617e15df64eca3403ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370565">Are other owners also interested in exploring methanol fuel cell technology, or is this a one-off case?The client who stepped forward to support us on this path was certainly unique at the time, but we are now seeing other competent, inquisitive owners expressing interest in these kinds of energy-producing capabilities. Many owners understand that a significant portion of a yacht’s emissions come not from propulsion but from creating power for the hotel load, such as air conditioning, lighting and other onboard systems.There is a growing interest in cleaner energy production and in reducing the energy required to operate a yacht. For example, owners are now questioning whether air conditioning needs to maintain 20-21 degrees inside at midday when everyone is in swimming trunks, or whether it is more sensible to target cooler temperatures at night. By adjusting these parameters and educating owners on the impact, we can substantially reduce energy requirements.Additionally, through power management systems, a practice we have long used on navy ships, we can stagger large consumers to reduce absolute heat load. It is a holistic approach and it is encouraging to see clients proactively engaging with these discussions, recognising that efficiency extends beyond flashy new propulsion systems.How is&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>&nbsp;working to develop the next generation of yacht builders to ensure skills are retained and advanced within the industry?Workforce development is a challenge across many European industries. In Germany, we have a vocational training system that involves three years of basic training to become a skilled worker and we have always prioritised training apprentices within our group. Ships are built on the shop floor, not in offices, so this in-house training for skilled labour is crucial.Beyond this, we collaborate with universities to attract young engineers across electrical, mechanical and naval architecture disciplines, offering internships and the opportunity to write their master’s or bachelor’s theses with us, helping to foster an interest in shipbuilding.In addition, we have recently launched the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> Foundation, initially in Croatia and now expanding into Germany, to support promising young engineers by allowing them to work on projects that may not have immediate relevance but which could have significant long-term potential. We currently have six students in the programme, all of whom show excellent promise. If all continue to demonstrate the dedication and discipline we have seen so far, it will be a strong pipeline for our future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/9870/image/large-d393113659787e2e5669ca7664eed0d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/9870">What do you consider to be the biggest challenge facing yachting today and how is Lürssen preparing to address it?Yachting has faced criticism and it is important for us to demonstrate that we are making a genuine effort to reduce our carbon footprint. If we can show that what we do is relevant to the broader marine industry, it will help support the future of yachting. At the same time, this is personal for me – if we do not have a healthy ocean, why be on a yacht at all?Many of us have witnessed the degradation of the marine environment, whether it is oil spills or plastic waste on beaches. It is the responsibility of everyone in the maritime sector to protect and restore the oceans where we can. This has not always been a universal focus, but we are seeing increasing support, with events such as the recent UN Ocean Conference in France. It is vital that we continue to take responsibility for preserving marine environments.How important is collaboration within the industry to achieve these goals?Collaboration is absolutely key. We share the goal of reducing environmental impact through initiatives like the Water Revolution Foundation, where many major shipyards and designers work together towards this shared objective. The challenges facing the industry are too large for any single shipyard or designer to tackle alone.It is encouraging that platforms now exist to focus on the ocean within the broader context of climate change. Collaboration will be essential in developing the technologies needed to bring yachting to the next required level and in protecting the ocean for future generations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/364231/image/large-299a974d49c1efa54525771676b6839e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/364231">Finally, looking ahead as&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>&nbsp;celebrates its 150th anniversary, what are your hopes for the future?I hope that, as a yachting industry, we find a good answer to meet the climate goals by 2050 and that we reach the goal of having thirty percent of the marine environment protected by 2030. On a personal level, it would be fantastic to continue the legacy of my great-grandfather, who built the first motorboat, by building the first yacht without a combustion engine, marking the next milestone in maritime innovation.Of course, today, the scale and complexity are vastly different and it requires many people across the shop floor, engineering offices and commercial teams to work together over several years. Fortunately, our clients understand this complexity and support the process, for which I am grateful. Peter Lürssen on the future of yachting: If we do not have a healthy ocean, why be on a yacht at all?

Balancing tradition and transformation, Peter Lürssen reveals how the iconic shipyard is preparing for the next era of responsible yachting. 

In an industry wedded to steel and aluminium construction, superyacht shipyards have been relatively slow to embrace composite materials for the manufacturing of large structures such as hardtops and biminis. But having completed more than 15,000 refit and repair projects, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a> in Palma de Mallorca has proven the benefits of composites many times over.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357903/image/large-a1b69eb8e595571c2355e9769bd52a3b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357903">In 2022 as part of a €35 million refit, the 73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Ocean</a> (ex-Coral Island) designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Jon Bannenberg</a> received an entirely new and enclosed sky lounge for entertaining and dining. The 140-square-metre roof structure replaced the former sat-dome area on the upper deck and comprised two large electric sliding sunroofs, as well as a new 3.8-metre navigation mast atop the roof. The whole massive structure was engineered and built out of composite foam-cored panels by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231707/image/large-671afdff72f522f8d6d98e20ccd34bff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231707">“The original idea was to do it in aluminum,” recalls Luke Hendy, technical &amp; commercial director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a>. “But we thought we could do something much better and bigger in composites, because we weren’t as constrained by the weight and stability issues of building in aluminium. What started out as a new roof turned into a major deck modification.”&nbsp;Local company 3D Tech was tasked with laser scanning the deck space to 0.2-millimetre accuracy and integrating the (often conflicting) inputs from the Gurit composite engineers and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a>, who drew the lines for the new sky lounge. The resulting 3D CAD model became the primary reference throughout the project lifecycle, from the tooling and component manufacture to the final installation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357899/image/large-f46a2494bf206d75ba42512286e7a962.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357899">“Integrating all the HVAC, AV and electrics, as well as the big sliding doors and opening sunroofs, was part of quite a mammoth modelling operation,” continues Hendy. “But what we had at the end was a very accurate 3D model to start the tooling, which provides shapes that are much closer, if not identical, to the original design – much more accurate than working with aluminium, which has to be cut and welded, then faired and primed.”The roof and mast structures were manufactured off-site at the purpose-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a> facility and delivered in three main parts to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="STP Shipyard Palma (Company)">STP Shipyard Palma</a>, where they were assembled and then bonded and bolted to the top deck. Thanks to the accuracy of the CNC-machined female moulds, tooled directly from the CAD data, the composite parts required very little fairing compared to traditional aluminium construction. The use of 3D scanning at the outset further meant the huge components fitted perfectly. In fact, installing the structures took just two days with no hotworks required. The sky lounge was later described as the ‘jewel’ of the award-winning refit.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357895/image/large-ce3ecad4097bab27985889c80bb422d4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357895">Weighing the cost&nbsp;Less fairing meant significant weight savings in a very stability sensitive area at the top of the yacht. Steel and aluminium usually require between six and eight millimetres of filler, which translates into eight kilos per square metre on average. That adds up very quickly in terms of weight, but also cost and time.“You also have to consider the logistics of tenting the yacht, the extraction, the disruption to other refit jobs and – critically – the time the boat is out of operation,” Hendy explains. “Instead, we built the structures off-site at our own manufacturing facility while everyone else cracked on with other works, then came back at the end of the six-month yard period and installed the new sky lounge already painted.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357898/image/large-cf3fae3ad31407605466acd9a87d953b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357898">To illustrate his point, Hendy references the recent refit of a busy charter yacht when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a> were able to scan the whole upper deck overnight. This provided all the data they needed to go away and engineer, fabricate and paint a new composite structure for later installation. In the meantime, the owner could continue earning revenue from the yacht’s charter activities.&nbsp;“The raw material and basic construction costs may be marginally higher with composites, but over time it works out cheaper when you look at the wider picture,” says Hendy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/183207/image/large-6c4f5ab23799f88a134a28946f0e9738.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/183207">Around the same time as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Ocean</a>, the 40-strong team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a> was commissioned to engineer, build and install new carbon-fibre hardtop biminis for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="M577.6m (254'7&quot;)Vosper Thornycroft2004">M5</a>, the largest single-masted sailing yacht in the world. The new structures – two attached fore and aft of the existing transverse arch, and one covering the forward area of the huge flybridge – replaced the traditional steel tube and canvas bimini's with a more modern design featuring integrated AV and lighting and electrically operated sunroofs to protect the helmsman. Included in the upgrade was the manufacture of two new helm consoles and wheels to complement the new-look flybridge.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/183209/image/large-1f3592900ad62da0e6f4dec4df0909c6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/183209">“We used the same 3D scanning, CAD modelling and CAD/CAM tooling techniques to produce the hardtops offsite for later transport to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/194" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="NCA Refit (Company)">NCA Refit</a> yard in Italy, but although the yacht was also composite in many ways the engineering proved more complex than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Ocean</a>,” says Hendy. “This was because we had to integrate the main bimini into the existing arch structure and visually the design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monk Design (Company)">Adriana Monk</a> was very sleek, so we had to be careful to achieve the stiffness we wanted without any vibration or resonance.”&nbsp;Reducing resonance&nbsp;This last point is critical in the engineering process. All physical structures have natural frequencies at which they will tend to vibrate when subjected to external forces, including waves and pressure pulses from propellers. These frequencies are dependent on the way mass and stiffness are distributed within the structure. Resonance happens when a dynamic force excites a structure to vibrate at its natural frequency – even a small force can produce a large vibration response that may result in ‘humming’. In the case of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Ocean</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a> referred to the yacht’s original noise and vibration studies to engineer the GRP/carbon sandwich panels to avoid these natural frequencies. Moreover, the PVC foam cores have much higher damping and thermal insulation properties compared to aluminium. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357900/image/large-d767a68c94182e7c21c2b729c69b97cc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357900">One challenge that still has to be fully overcome by contractors like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a> is that the class societies are more accustomed to dealing with steel and aluminium in superyacht construction. When faced with composites they usually to refer to the rules for guidance, but technology moves quickly and the existing regulations may be unsuitable. That can lead to situations where a surveyor might want to see a composite panel that has the same thickness as an aluminium one, because that is the benchmark he or she understands best.“One of the issues is that the regulations were originally written for commercial ships, so class is already playing catch up with the superyacht industry,” says Ian Heseltine, operations manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a>. “However, on each project we work closely with class to help bring the rules up to date.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357902/image/large-dbc4db1256119fe2657abf37db086cad.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357902">Full potential&nbsp;Indeed, Heseltine believes it is the high-tech nature of building with advanced composites that fundamentally distinguishes it most from metal construction. After all, you can design something sleek and curvy in aluminium, but then you have to convert the design into technical drawings to build it out of flat sheets of metal. At that point, you lose the direct connection between the design intent and the physical reality. Not so with composites:<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357901/image/large-66281726fe0b3e6f510983a7fcc68c0b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357901">“We bring 3D scans into our CAD software as the basis of the design, then build and test it virtually for rigidity and strength, resistance to wind loading and vibration, and so on,” explains Heseltine. “But we also use that very same CAD tech to create the tooling, which is able to reproduce a perfect impression of the original design intent. In other words, we harness the technology to its full potential from concept to completion.”Composite vs aluminumAluminium has a density of about 2.7 grams per cubic centimetre, whereas a composite foam-cored panel typically has a density of between 0.03 to 0.5 grams per cubic centimetre) with stiff outer skins of GRP, carbon fibre, or even aluminium. The core dramatically reduces weight while maintaining rigidity, making it much lighter than solid aluminium. In fact, a one-square-metre aluminium plate (5-millimetre thick) weighs approximately 13.5 kg, whereas a one-square-metre composite foam panel (with a 5mm core and 1-millimetre fibreglass skins) weighs 3-5 kg, depending on the skin materials.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357904/image/large-6c0a129e610df5867b4de2d6c439e8f2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357904">Aluminium has good stiffness, but its rigidity comes from its density. Young’s Modulus (stiffness measure) for aluminium is about 70 GPa. Foam cores are not inherently stiff, but a panel’s stiffness comes from its outer skins (carbon fibre’s Young’s Modulus is up to 230 GPa) and the thickness of the sandwich structure. The foam core effectively increases the separation between the outer skins, which improves stiffness without adding much weight.Composite foam-cored panels have a much higher stiffness-to-weight ratio compared to solid aluminium plates. Indeed, for the same weight, foam-cored composite panels can be three to 10 times stiffer than aluminium, making them ideal for applications where light weight and rigidity are critical.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357897/image/large-a92bb62ebf2a7af1d3ce69ab7fbffec9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357897">20 years in business<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7202" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BMComposites (Company)">BM Composites</a> was set up in 2005 by sailor, boat builder and composites specialist Mark Branagh. After assisting the Oracle America’s Cup team in Valencia, he moved his headquarters to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="STP Shipyard Palma (Company)">STP (Servicios Técnicos Portuarios) Shipyard</a> in Palma de Mallorca. Over the past 16 years Will Faimatea has built his technology consultancy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> into one of the most highly regarded businesses in yachting, strategically acquiring minority shares in technical companies across the sector and supporting the growth and development of more than 5 fledgling companies. Francesca Webster sat down with Will to hear more about his entrepreneurial journey and to get his expert insight into the opportunities and challenges that businesses face in yachting today.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259993/image/large-374092eab1eb0763cb589d4b68d80542.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259993">I understand that you started your career as an ETO, how did you transfer that experience into a business model?I started my yachting career as an ETO (Electro-Technical Officer) onboard Coral Island (new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Ocean</a>) but I had worked as an engineer for Honeywell prior to that. The thing that actually got me into the industry was teaching GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress Safety System), which at the time was becoming written in the legislative requirements of the industry and Coral was one of the first yachts to require it. I was lucky to fill the gap on that project because the ETO position quickly morphed into what it is today – looking after the owner’s entertainment side of technology. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231707/image/large-671afdff72f522f8d6d98e20ccd34bff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231707"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231706/image/large-864e0a24b6fb5db1bd426e123b36cfdb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231706">During my years onboard, rotation hadn’t really caught on yet, and the 11 months on with one off cycle began to take its toll, it wasn’t sustainable and so I knew I’d be coming off at some point. In my final years I became aware that the guys in my sector onshore were developing faster than I was on board – on the yacht I was the master of my domain, but outside I realised I was losing it. While at Honeywell before my time onboard I had run an IT business on the side, so there were already some entrepreneurial seeds bubbling away and those were reignited when I realised I needed to make a change. I spent time reflecting on the experience I had gained through various build periods and what I realised is that often the AV/IT companies winning the new-build projects weren’t necessarily the ones best placed for the job, but the ones closest to the owners representatives.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/275840/image/large-030292191197d89968755a9d87ed4c71.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/275840">I realised then there was a space for a consultancy that presented the best options, value and expectations, which had never been done before in my sector within yachting. Consultancies in other sectors and industries were well established, but at the time it was unusual for an AV/IT budget to hit €1 million – a lot has changed since then.So you founded&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a>, but how did you pitch the company and break the trend of ‘closest to the captain’ over ‘best option’?It wasn’t easy, but I found that captains / owners representatives who were managing their second or third build were the ones who had experienced the issues I was trying to fix. Those people who had experienced the pain of getting things wrong and running over timelines, expectations and budgets were the ones we approached first and often for them it was a no-brainer. We also walked into a bit of a vacuum at that time in the industry because there were a lot of captains experiencing difficulties; that's not to say everyone and for those who had a good experience in a previous build, it was a harder sell because we were offering something that hadn’t been available before.&nbsp;I truly believed however, that the industry needed a company like ours to streamline processes and elevate the quality of technology onboard yachts, and the success of similar ventures in the commercial world also demonstrated that it had real value as an offering.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/275842/image/large-ff98cce77008392f5a36b1b67dabece5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/275842">Since founding&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a>&nbsp;15 years ago you have systematically acquired businesses across the sector, did you foresee that growth in the early days?I left a job I truly loved because I believed in the opportunity I saw. When I was building the initial idea for the company I had aspirations and the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a>, meaning to unite, came from those, but I never expected to be so big [at this point Will goes off camera to find two framed newspaper scraps, one with an array of words such as ‘unite’ and ‘resilience’ written on it and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> circled many times]. &nbsp;When I used to fly from Amsterdam to Hamburg I’d write ideas on newspaper scraps. The original idea of the consultancy was to bring businesses together as an owner's representative from a purely technical perspective. I didn’t specifically write down that we would one day acquire an HVAC consultancy company as we did in 2018, or a crewing company, but these notes pretty accurately describe the business we have now become.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/221288/image/large-4ed0dd721194f7b9233034a2fe610aa9.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/221288"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227083/image/large-4bdf0b2bfaed647fa01af96ea15bbfcf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227083">And when it comes to acquisition, how do you scope out and assess the businesses that you acquire – what are you looking for?&nbsp;Things have somewhat changed since 2018 when we were more commercially driven. Today I look for businesses with a good product, but one that is in need of some help, whether it is with structure and management or growth development. The most important thing is that it needs to make commercial sense for both parties; we are in a stronger position than a fledgling company, and can help to accelerate growth. Generally I look outside of the yachting industry and I assess how I can tilt a company to succeed in this market because that is where my expertise, and the expertise of my team, lays.&nbsp;We’ve followed the pattern of partial acquisition many times now and the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> is highly experienced at bringing together companies to create a legacy. The recent acquisition of the Superyacht Technology Network is a personal investment and, but also investing in a platform that promotes other companies within the sector.&nbsp;There is also another factor, and that is the opportunity for me to give something back to the industry and help young companies become more stable and successful. I remember what it is like trying to find the budget to attend the Monaco Yacht Show for example; it can be incredibly prohibitive for a fledgling company and that can make it much more difficult to become established.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/275844/image/large-a356915db98c653ecfea0194b8a59ae3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/275844"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/229068/image/large-cc1ce5cd0b1d4843486a4363c6a1d30f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/229068">When you acquire businesses, you take a minority share and the companies retain their individuality – why?I take the minority share because I want to keep the founder involved in the business, there is no &nbsp;earn out clause after acquisition by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a>. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> is built on expertise and we want to keep that expertise within the company. When we moved into HVAC for example, I can’t just turn AV/IT engineers into HVAC engineers and expect that business to run successfully, from a commercial perspective I need the work force and the experience to remain with the business.&nbsp;The other reason however is that we want to create an environment where everybody wins and it's because of that that we have grown. When we look into a company we assess the benefits on both sides; if that company wants to be helped and grow, and they can help us in return, then we can accelerate that and the relationship is clear – not being greedy is the most important thing and I believe that it cannot work if one side wins.&nbsp;Ok so what next, can we expect to see further acquisitions in the coming year?Let’s say that there are two more on the table for this year. My job now as CEO is purely looking at tomorrow, because I am not making any money until we realise an acquisition that brings in value to the project or our client base.I have an excellent team behind me at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> and of the 52 employees we just had twelve celebrate their 10 year anniversary and we are proud of the position we have built and hold in the industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/275839/image/large-a60aa3d81ee3ac5e62f7e64a3f588754.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/275839">Do you think there are still opportunities for young entrepreneurs in yachting?Yes opportunities still exist because the industry is evolving. Someone seeing the industry from the inside (onboard) may have a better perspective of what is missing than I do today. One of the things that contributed to our success was lack of competition in the first five or six years that we were operating, which at the time I found a bit concerning. But at that time we were unique, and having come from my position as an ETO I had a different perspective than an integrator. It is very hard as an integrator to become a consultant because it’s difficult to take that hat off, and that is one of the reasons that we don't have ex-integrators on our team.&nbsp;Today it is actually harder to leave a career onboard yachts than it was when I started, because rotation is such an attractive offering that Captains, engineers and ETOs can continue in that cycle for far longer. To be frank, I don’t know if I would be where I am today with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> if rotation had existed because I loved my job and only stopped working onboard because it became unsustainable.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/275843/image/large-5f63126f1aae00526cfb5a4fd1c1cefb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/275843">Finally, what advice would you give to a young entrepreneur today?Be patient, resilient and be mindful of politics. If you are walking into yachting you are going to be moving into a competitive space and that has an impact on your company. Unless you find a niche by which you need a strong sales pitch and marketing budget. Either way there will be politics.&nbsp;For the crew now who are thinking of starting something, I would say be aware of what is going on around you; what issues do you, your crew and the owners face and is there something that you can offer that solves those problems. Coral Ocean reborn: Iconic 73m Lürssen superyacht completes €35 million refit 

When speaking to the father and son team behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>, custom superyacht tender builders based in Perth, Australia, their combined passion and experience for their industry immediately shines through. SYT chats with Gunnar and Lynden Vikingur about what custom means at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>, how the industry is developing, and most importantly, the strides they have made in the innovation of hybrid electric propulsion systems for their tenders. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194881/image/large-906c02ada528698d204bb8dc1f23e22c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194881">With a pedigree dating back over 35 years, the company had serendipitous beginnings when renowned British-Australian yacht designer Jon Bannenberg approached Gunnar Vikingur, Director of the shipyard, and asked if he might consider constructing a custom tender for a project he was working on. For the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>, who had until then been building and repairing local composite yachts, it was a golden opportunity, that they immediately jumped at, building their first tender for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Island</a>, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Ocean</a>, in 1994. Though it was another four years before their next commission, Gunnar knew he had found a great entry into the market and as Lynden put it, “we subsequently carved a niche for an unusual product, in the most unlikely of locations.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194920/image/large-293f9c88ac4969cba12abe0b317d6c90.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194920">Today it is clear that their perseverance paid off, having just delivered two more tenders, the company has now constructed more than 75 bespoke vessels to some of the finest yachts in the industry. Gunnar commented, “we have been extremely busy for the last 25 years, and have delivered more custom tenders to larger superyachts than any other company in the world, which is particularly impressive given the competitive nature of the market.” Though in Gunnar’s opinion the word custom is overused, the vessels produced at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> are custom in the truest sense. Every yacht is made to specific and highly unique specifications, “often clients don’t know exactly what they want, and we work with them and their teams to create their bespoke tender”, and as Lynden stated, “we can create anything that a client desires.” It is not only the designs that make the tenders unique, most elements of the tenders, are handmade and hand finished, a rarity in the modern mechanised world, &nbsp;which also determines that no two vessels are ever the same. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195129/image/large-b0dccebab8a1ef3cb6ff103089492884.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195129">Over the last few years, the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> have been, like much of the industry, looking for more sustainable solutions to yacht propulsion. Unlike their larger counterparts however, the movement to electric is a far more manageable manoeuvre, and to this end, they have already designed a hybrid propulsion system for their tenders. As Lynden pointed out, “the logistics of converting a superyacht to electric versus converting a tender is clear. With a yacht you have to cut large propulsion systems, often out the side of the ship, but you can re-power a tender with relative ease; engine compartments are accessible, you just need an owner who is willing to take that quantitative leap into new technology and a new product, which only a certain kind of owner is willing to do.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195112/image/large-e8820d85bafbfdbced53fe608f38e56d.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195112">In fact, the most recent delivery, an 8.1-metre limousine, is a platform that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> can already sell as an electric hybrid product. Lynden is eager to emphasise that, “there is a misconception that to build an electric hybrid vessel, you need to start from scratch, but you can approach it in a different way. Most clients specify that they want a specific motor for their tender, and we deliver on that specification, it is no different to put electric propulsion in your tender. You are adapting the battery system, it's not a major deviation from what is done every day here at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194880/image/large-a0dbbb7b57d6b20006601ef867452299.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194880">Though they recognise that the technology to support fully electric propulsion yachts is some way off, they have developed a successful diesel/electric system which can already be installed aboard their tenders. This system can replace the current engines with no impact to the design of the yacht: batteries replace fuel storage and electric motors replace the diesel ones. As Lynden said, “we are pulling out all the stoppers to achieve this end and make our hybrid electric tenders immediately available.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194895/image/large-b86a2f0d91e499c0ee22d5083e8a88d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194895">Something that both Lynden and Gunnar are quick to point out is that technological developments are happening every day in this industry. Today we recognise that fully electrical propulsion systems would cut down the range of a tender drastically, but in five years, that might be a vastly lower division. What <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> is able to do is move with the times, if a client were to buy a hybrid tender from them to today, in five, ten years, they might be able to return and retrofit the vessel with fully electrical systems.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194834/image/large-d19db97e595c8f3a6eca26d852321121.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194834">Finding owners throughout the industry that are willing to step into new technology is paramount to the move to more sustainable propulsion methods. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> however, there is always the opportunity to refit existing tenders, an option made all that more viable by the materials the company uses. Fibreglass, Kevlar and carbon fibre are materials which stand the test of time.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194891/image/large-c249bcced08934147cdb790761f672bc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194891">Neither Gunnar or Lynden are fooled by the influx of green talk in the yachting industry, but they understand the importance of taking actual strides towards a more sustainable future. There are no hollow promises at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>, this is one company that are ready and eager to take active steps – it is now time to find the clients who will take those steps with them.&nbsp;

73m Lürssen yacht Coral Ocean sold at Monaco Yacht Show

The 73-metre Lürssen yacht Coral Ocean has found a new owner in record tempo at the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show.

These yachts have a total length of 5,658 metres, an average length of 83.2 metres and an average volume of 3,456 gross tons (GT). Lürssen superyachts Coral Ocean and TV in Palm Beach 

The scale at which the largest yacht builder in the world operates has understandably been the subject of speculation, envy and inspiration for many in the yachting industry, and it is inside the building halls of Lürssen where some of the most iconic superyachts in the world have been created. We travelled to Bremen to meet Mr. Lürssen himself to find out just how one manages the successes, trials and uncertainties that come with being at the helm of such a productive operation.

A studied naval architect, Peter Lürssen joined his family business in 1987 after spending time abroad studying and working in the commercial shipbuilding industry. He returned to Germany to join a Lürssen shipyard that operated in a vastly different way to the one we all know today. The defence sector accounted for the overruling amount of business operations of the shipyard, with a company value not even nearly equating to the level Lürssen currently enjoys.

To continue the direct bloodline of family-descendant directors, a business model which will be continued long after Peter’s retirement, the company shares were eventually passed on to Peter and his cousin, Friedrich Lürssen, with Friedrich covering the defence side of the shipyard, and Peter, the superyacht segment. But, as Lürssen tells us, it certainly wasn’t the booming yacht-building company held in such high esteem today.

 

Tell us about the state of the yacht-building side of Lürssen when you returned to the company in the late 80s.

When I joined we didn’t really have a yachting segment and in 1988, about 96% of the business was related to defence, with only 4% on other ship building. We felt that this was not a particularly good position to be in; if defence would weaken, we would be left standing on one leg. We built Carinthias V, VI and Shergar in the early 80s and another 32 metre for a German client, but it was never really a focused business model.

We slowly built up a team with a single sales office and a designer as the first real step towards establishing ourselves in the yachting scene. We had to try very hard to find a first client who ordered the 40 metre Be Mine. After her delivery in 1991 we could exhibit her at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and I remember us having to invite as many people as we could on to the yacht during the boat show - we had nothing else to show! Following that, we built Coral Island and Limitless and it was only then when the market really came in our direction.

Nowadays a lot of your competitors build yachts on speculation. Is that something you would also consider?

We thought about it for a long time but we have fortunately never been in the position to ask ourselves, “Do we release people, or do we build on speculation?”. We have fortunately always been very busy at our shipyard so we have never had to build on speculation. There are two models: one is to start the construction without a client and sell it before delivery. This is usually done for production boats or semi-production boats. That is a different business model to ours. We are set up as a bespoke yacht builder, building unique boats for individual clients.

 

As a yacht builder focusing greatly on the 100+ metre market, are you concerned this sector may slow down and affect business?

We are not focusing on the 100+ metre market, it is more that the market has put us there. We also build 60 and 70+ metre yachts and consider this being a very important part of our market.

Of course, I am afraid! There is a noticeable market slow down. This is something we are naturally concerned about, yes. You should never take things for granted and the biggest challenge that we have is making sure that we deliver consistently on a very, very high level of quality. The next challenge is finding the people that are willing to spend a substantial amount of money to buy such a yacht. We have been fortunate as the markets have been kind, but they also used to be much stronger.

Each year a number of yachts, mostly Lürssens, return to the shipyard. Has maintenance and refit become a big part of the company?

We feel it is very important to be able to service a yacht that we delivered and we think it is an advantage if the yacht is maintained by the original builder. No one would send his/her Boeing Business Jet to be maintained at a propeller-plane manufacturer. So maintenance, repair, and refit has certainly become part of our business model.

Do you feel there should be a certain set of guidelines that prevents random companies from setting up a shipyard without a genuine business model?

We believe in a free market where everyone can do what he/she wants. What I do not encourage, however, is when people over promise and under deliver. People need to understand that the community of yacht owners is very small and what the industry has to guarantee is satisfied clients. We want people to talk about their yachts and say, “Hey, this is the best thing you can have!” But it does happen that clients receive their yachts halfway finished, and these cases are certainly not doing the whole industry any favours. Anyone should be free to open a shipyard but I would expect them to stand behind the shipyard and their product. It is not good that clients are talked into a venture that will not work out.

 

Tell us about the pressures involved in being at the head of one of the world’s largest shipbuilders.

I am always under pressure. Mostly because of the need to not disappoint a client. I once had a client who told me, “I will put your name on the side of my boat if it’s good, but if the boat is not good, your name will appear three times as big.” We were brought up with the sense that it is a very personal obligation for the family when we sign a contract to deliver a yacht that the client expects. I cannot go to a client and say “One of my guys made a mistake.” He would say “Is he Mr. Lürssen, or are you Mr. Lürssen?”  But a successful delivery is also a great reward. I take the relationships of my clients very personally.

Insight: Behind the scenes with Peter Lürssen

When digging through any successful global enterprise’s history pages, one will find a few moments in time that had shaped and defined the company for what it would eventually one day will become known for. Delving into the Lürssen archives, the birth of Coral Ocean (known as Coral Island at the time of her launch in 1994), can certainly be seen as one of those moments.

Designed by the then established Jon Bannenberg, Lürssen continued its relationship with the British designer following the Carinthia projects. Coral Ocean’s exterior is a mix of elegance and contemporary chic-ness with an African/Polynesian-inspired beach house interior unlike any other yacht at that time. During her last refit the AV/IT system was updated to the latest standards. The yacht owners have maintained her in a pristine condition throughout the years and she has been a regular visitor at the Lürssen facilities for maintenances.

The main salon is designed for comfort, as are most guest areas on board. Homely touches such as oversized sofas, large tables and collected art pieces scattered around the deck leaves much to admire.  A blend of rustic and natural materials enhances the ‘tropical’ feel so evident across the entire yacht. An opening to starboard folds open for an uninterrupted view over the outdoors.

Another lounge one deck above, the upper deck saloon, is styled in an all-white theme with bright fabrics and plenty of natural light.

The grand master suite is forward-facing and commands a view over the foredeck through a panoramic set of windows. The bed is electrically adjustable in order to make the most of the stunning vistas. An extra large skylight invites even more light into this spacious room. The suite has a private corridor leading to the upper deck lounge, or downstairs to the main deck.

Arranged around a central hallway flooded with natural light from the main deck’s skylight, the lower guest suites offer the ultimate in comfort and tranquility. In total, twelve guests can be accommodated on Coral Ocean – a VIP suite on the upper deck, four guest suites on the lower deck and the owner's deck on top.

Located at the very aft area of this deck is Coral Ocean’s Gym, Spa and wellness area. A facility such as this, which was a rarity on board a yacht at the time, has become a common feature on so many modern superyachts.

Exterior deck spaces are spread out across three guest levels, each with its own unique usage and amenities. A lavish top aft deck with a barbecue bar and a generous socialising area create a space for enjoying lunch, a casual dinner or a cocktail evening.

The expansive sun deck is perfect for sunbathing and entertaining larger groups. A highlight of this deck has to be the central pool. More than just a spot to cool down in, the dual-level pool is a work of art lined with individual mosaic pieces complete with a large viewing porthole.

Live from Monaco: superyachts arrive ahead of MYS 2016

The renamed 72 metre Lürssen superyacht Coral Ocean was seen departing the German shipyard last week as she heads for the Mediterranean. The yacht has spent over nine months in Bremen where various updates to her interior spaces and guest amenities have been made. Apart from her new name, exterior areas have remained largely unchanged.

Coral Ocean is currently steaming to Gibraltar and will be on display for the first time since her launch in 1994 at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.

Coral Ocean departs Lürssen following refit

One of the first projects to come from the late designer Jon Bannenberg’s drawing boards and iconic Lürssen superyacht Coral Island has recently been renamed Coral Ocean following a refit at the shipyard’s refit facilities, and will now be available for charter this summer season in the Mediterranean. Lürssen announced today that the yacht will also be on display at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show in September.

The yacht has been exclusively privately used and is kept in pristine condition since her launch in 1994 through a series of refits and maintenance periods over the past two decades. Her most recent refit saw Coral Ocean be prepared for the charter market to conform to commercial regulations and standards.

In 1994, Coral Ocean was one of the first yachts whose interior featured a gym and a spa area, and guests will have the opportunity to enjoy these amenities on board one the most exclusive yachts on the charter market today.

72m Lürssen superyacht Coral Island renamed Coral Ocean

In 1965, Jon Bannenberg designed several rooms, as well as the pool, on board QE2. Product of the Week: Sea-Raft's custom built work rafts

Last week we reported about the recent refir of superyacht Ronin at Lürssen. Today we can bring you more details about the work that was carried out whilst this 20 year old yacht was in Germany.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/145373/image/large-ced5a4be3838d8b142a4f4685ce0eb58.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/145373">Refit, Repair and Conversion has become a core business for Lürssen. During the last 12 months 8 yachts between 46 and 110 metres have used the Lürssen facilities for modifications. Amongst them are some of the world's most beautiful yachts such as Coral Island, Radiant or Mayan Queen.The refit of Ronin was one of the bigger refits. During her 11 month stay at the yard she has undergone a complete face-lift from the technical side up to the repainting of the hull and superstructure to make her as good as new.Work included the removal of the old teak decks, installation of a new noise reducing cork underlay and installation of new teak decking, the dismantling of 50% of the interior to remove old AV cables, and the installation of new state of the art AV, telephone and camera systems. The yachts generators and main engines were overhauled, and she underwent her 10 year ABS survey. More technical work included the complete overhaul of pumps and valves in technical areas, the installation of a new provision cooling plant and new shaft bearings.Cosmetic work included composite work on foredeck storage boxes, wing consoles, and tender cradles. She is powered by twin 1947hp Caterpillar 3516 diesel engines which propel the yacht up to a top speed of 17.4 knots. She carries 12 guests, and a crew of 22. Built as September Blue for a UK owner, she was later sold to the current owner of Lürssen’s Coral Island who used her for dive trips. Later on this Feadship was sold to the owner of Kogo, but when Kogo was delivered in 2006 Tugatsu was sold once again. Nowadays she is owned by a former Formula 1 driver who extensively refitted the yacht at Composite Works in 2006.
