SuperYacht Times sat down with Giuseppe Palumbo, founder and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a>, to find out more about what is currently in the pipeline at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>, their recent refit projects and the future of the refit market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197832/image/large-8a286b8bfefd1eb1f0c88cf78a2f4145.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197832">How did you start out in the superyacht industry and what encouraged you to found&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a>?I was a child when I took my first steps in the shipyard with my grandfather. When I was a teenager, I continued to enjoy my visits there, breathing the air, the smells, looking the workers straight in the eyes and feeling the passion in their work. When I was growing up I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps. I made the passion I experienced from others at the shipyard ‘mine’ and took to the field myself.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197827/image/large-49da68697b37fc1330eaf146a168a506.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197827">Today I am in charge of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a> division, which includes the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6173" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Columbus Yachts (Company)">Columbus</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5574" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Extra Yachts (Company)">EXTRA</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondomarine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a> brands. I have managers with great experience on each of our five production sites in Ancona, Savona, Naples, Malta and Marseille, as well as a representative office in Antibes. Every week I try to visit the shipyards to see the new yachts under construction or refit. I like getting into the technical aspects and I confess that my greatest passion is product development and technological innovation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197831/image/large-089ce3b223333f9c77072c4704101624.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197831">As a family we have always dealt with refit and maintenance of commercial, cruise and cargo vessels, but in 2008 we decided to invest in yachting by making our first 54-metre superyacht under the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6173" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Columbus Yachts (Company)">Columbus</a> brand. Then we grew by acquisition, first with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA Yachts</a> shipyard and then with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondomarine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a>. The latest addition to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a> is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5574" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Extra Yachts (Company)">EXTRA</a>, an innovative brand both in terms of exterior design and volume optimisation. I prefer to let the accomplished results and the facts demonstrate what we are able to achieve both in terms of new constructions and repairs.From the establishment of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a>, how has your vision for the company changed?My long-term view has never changed. I believe it is important to always maintain high construction standards by using quality materials and skilled labour. It is crucial to keep up with new technologies and check their application for the yachting industry. We were pioneers in the field of hybrid propulsion and we continue to invest in the development of new projects and in technical construction equipment. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197734/image/large-6207584bc29a524411e097ddde3f4f5a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197734"> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a>&nbsp;consists of several different brands, including&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>. Could you tell me about the establishment of the refit brand? How does refit and maintenance fit into the vision of the Palumbo group?Refit and maintenance are our bread and butter. We started with this in the early 1950s as a family. It is an integral part of our daily work and the market acknowledges our dominant position in the Mediterranean, where we have five shipyards with state-of-the-art equipment and specialised workforce. We operate on boats up to 120-metres and we always complete our projects to "turnkey" condition and free of surprises.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197828/image/large-e2a7355dbe76ba0d37aff5ca57f0b13e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197828">We carry out a variety of jobs such as the complete repainting of hulls and superstructures, carpentry, interior refit, conversion, installation of hydrojet systems, just to name a few.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>&nbsp;has been busy with its expansion into Central America and the Caribbean, as well as a new office in Antibes. Why have you chosen these locations?Last fall, with the aim of having an increasingly widespread network and guaranteeing our customers would be reached and provided with the highest level of quality service everywhere, we opened a new Service Point in Central America and Caribbean. From January 2021, we have a new office in Antibes, France, which has been established as our new headquarters. The Côte d'Azur remains a strategic point of passage for most of the boats that will then have to be maintained, therefore it was the ideal place to settle our representative area office.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197741/image/large-23e84940f5b157b977c2b79a7c107de8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197741">What does&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>&nbsp;do differently from other repair and refit yards?No one else has as many shipyards offering such a wide range of services. Our facilities range between 22,000 square-metres to 45,000 square-metres, equipped with covered drydocks, travel lifts up to 820 tons, 3,300 ton ship lifts, painting sheds, moorings, yards for on-the-hard jobs, cranes, with many other features to complete projects of any scale. We have on site Project Managers and designers as well as specialised workshops such as joinery, carpentry, upholstery and warehouses at each yard. All of this makes a considerable difference in providing clients with a comprehensive and personal experience.Could you tell me more about some of the recent refit projects that have been completed at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>&nbsp;such as the 116-metre motor yacht&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/909" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantis II115.82m (379'12&quot;)Hellenic Shipyards S.A.1981">Atlantis II</a>&nbsp;and the 15-year Class Survey on the 73-metre superyacht&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/590" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Titania71.0m (232'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2006">Titania</a>?Over the past year and a half we have worked on several important projects. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/909" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantis II115.82m (379'12&quot;)Hellenic Shipyards S.A.1981">Atlantis II</a>has just sailed from Malta to start the season, after receiving routine maintenance as well as restoration and optimisation of her structures. Specifically, some of the process involved the replacement of the 60-metre steel plates on both sides of the superyacht as well as the construction and replacement of a new swimming pool platform. Additionally, our team worked on arranging anchors and cables, lining two anchor pockets, removing the bow thruster and both shaft and propellers, cleaning six ballast tanks, completely renewing the chain locker, replacing the existing exhaust pipe and repairing the air ducts in the FRW area.&nbsp; <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197733/image/large-c4738c92faba5b9290feceb2e069570f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197733">During her visit to our Marseille facilities, the 73-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/590" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Titania71.0m (232'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2006">Titania</a> completed her 15-year Class Survey. The project was completed under a strict deadline and our team’s capabilities were proven, completing the laborious task in under two months, in compliance with the strict rules established by Lloyd's. These are just two examples of superyachts that we’ve recently had in our yard. We also specialise in sailing vessels and we had the opportunity to maintain the sailing yachts <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6794" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Essentia25.95m (85'2&quot;)Grand Soleil2019">Essentia</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4381" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Woodpecker Cube27.71m (90'11&quot;)Nautor's Swan2008">Woodpecker Cube</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10850" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiwi23.99m (78'8&quot;)Southern Wind2002">Kiwi</a> in Ancona, and sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cyrano de Bergerac39.0m (127'11&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1993">Cyrano de Bergeraca</a> in Savona.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197738/image/large-a2057d50ae5cf29e0d9c66cca0d15a21.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197738">Obviously we provide specific service to the fleet of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6173" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Columbus Yachts (Company)">Columbus</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondomarine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5574" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Extra Yachts (Company)">EXTRA</a> brands. In Savona we worked on motor yachts <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/77" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tribu50.7m (166'4&quot;)Mondomarine SpA2007">Tribù</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Okto66.4m (217'10&quot;)ISA Yachts2014">Okto</a>, while motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3183" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Armada53.7m (176'2&quot;)Columbus Yachts2011">Armada</a> has been a longtime customer at our Naples facilities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197739/image/large-a436639cc3ec83864d225360e4341ac0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197739"> How do you see refit changing in the coming years, with the industry seeing a trend toward larger vessels and a move toward more ecologically mindful propulsion systems?The refit market is in good health with high-level competition between a few shipyards that have the right know-how and equipment to guarantee successful works with predictable costs. Having great knowledge of hybrid propulsion allows us to operate on conversions and maintenance on all kinds of vessels. Recent projects have provided us with insight into the latest ‘green’ propulsion systems. We were chosen as the main partner for the installation of a hydrogen propulsion system for the first boat we launched last May at our Marseille shipyard. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Tender/10473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hynova 4012.19m (39'12&quot;)Hynova Yachts2020 Tender">HYNOVA 40</a> is the first pleasure boat equipped with REXH2 (Range Extender Hydrogen), a silent and zero-emission hydrogen-electric hybrid technology. As part of our history series from revered in-house yacht historian, Malcolm Wood, we take a closer look at yacht builders that are, for one reason or another, no longer in existence. Across the next two issues, we explore the Camper &amp; Nicholsons shipyard of Gosport and Southampton in the UK. In this first instalment, we delve into the sailing yachts of the yard. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/45788/image/large-95e8c10229d15656bf62337401da4805.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45788">Camper &amp; Nicholsons were one of the earliest builders of yachts greater than 30-metres in length. The company also developed into one of the world’s most prominent yacht builders over the years, completing well over 2,000 vessels of all sizes. Owing to the large numbers of yachts involved, it is for this reason that we’ve decided to cover this prolific builder in two parts.The origins of the yard lie in one Francis C. Amos, a London born shipyard apprentice who in 1782 signed an agreement to lease the disused Charles Fort at Gosport, the site at which most of the company’s yachts would be built in future years. In 1809, William Camper, a great nephew of Amos, was apprenticed to his great uncle and following the death of Francis Amos in 1824, the control of the yard passed to William Camper.The first large yacht built by Campers was a 327-ton brigantine named Anonyma, launched in 1839 for the Royal Yacht Squadron member Colonel Greville. A succession of sailing yachts over 100-tons for both cruising and racing were built in the following two decades.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45789/image/large-ec4c5eb1372fc46fcaf3f1e344031da5.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45789">The Nicholson name first made an appearance in 1842 when Ben Nicholson was indentured as an apprentice shipwright to the Camper yard. Prior to William Camper’s death in 1863 he had written in his will that he wanted Ben Nicholson to take control of the yard together with one of his grandsons as a partner when he reached a mature age. The company would now be known as Camper &amp; Nicholson.One of the most famous racing yachts of this era was the 206-ton schooner Aline, built in 1860 for Charles S. Thellusson, one of the company’s most important clients. No less than 72 sailing yachts over 30-metres LOA were delivered from 1839 to 1914. Shamrock IV 1914 was Sir Thomas Lipton’s America’s Cup challenger in 1920 but lost to Resolute and was later broken up in 1932. Five of the 72 are still in service: Amphitrite of 1887, Black Swan (ex: Brynhild) of 1899, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5041" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Merrymaid34.75m (114'0&quot;)">Merrymaid</a> of 1904, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5039" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Joyette32.3m (105'12&quot;)">Joyette</a> (ex: Almara) of 1907 and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4394" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Orion of the Seas49.29m (161'9&quot;)">Orion</a> (ex: Sylvana) of 1910. Of these, Amphitrite is now a German registered sail training vessel whilst the other four are still private yachts.Following WWI, steam and motor yachts became the priority for the yard although several large sailing yachts were still being constructed. These were <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sylvia43.6m (143'1&quot;)">Sylvia</a> in 1925, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creole65.3m (214'3&quot;)">Vira</a> in 1927, Panope in 1928, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5042" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Astra35.0m (114'10&quot;)">Astra</a> in 1928, Ailée II in 1928, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4885" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Candida39.65m (130'1&quot;)">Candida</a> in 1929, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shamrock V36.58m (120'0&quot;)">Shamrock V</a> in 1930, Sonia II in 1931, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5040" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Saharet of Tyre32.43m (106'5&quot;)">Saharet</a> in 1933, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Velsheda39.4m (129'3&quot;)">Velsheda</a> in 1933,&nbsp;Endeavour I in 1934, Endeavour II in 1936, Panda in 1938 and Blanche-Neige in 1939.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45790/image/large-7e2737a3a194fd03f59622194ca20b8a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45790">Of these, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creole65.3m (214'3&quot;)">Vira</a> - better known as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creole65.3m (214'3&quot;)">Creole</a> today - was the largest with a length overall of 63.03-metres and a TM tonnage of 697. T.O.M. Sopwith’s Endeavour I is well known today, whilst Endeavour II&nbsp;was converted to a yawl and was eventually dismantled in 1963.Sonia II, owned by UK powerboat racer Betty Carstairs, was converted to a banana carrier in 1944 whilst Ailée II owned by French yachtswoman Virginie Heriot ended up in the French Navy’s Ecole Naval de Brest as a training vessel. Panda was seriously damaged by fire at St. Martin in 1984 and was later towed to Florida and scuttled in 1988.Let’s now look at C&amp;N’s post-WWII large sailing yacht construction.The first large sailing yacht constructed post-WWII was a 35-metre ketch named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2222" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aries35.0m (114'10&quot;)">Aries</a> for W.J. Reynolds of the USA, delivered in 1953. This was followed by another ketch of 30.2-metres, Miguy III, and delivered to Comte Guy du Boisrouvray in 1960. This yacht was originally ordered for King Faisal II of Iraq who was assassinated in a coup d’etat before she was completed.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45787/image/large-db70b8e1ec66083603d788b639ea1874.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45787">The yard was very busy with small production-line sailing yachts and it wasn’t until 1979 that another large sailing yacht of 30.54-metres was completed. This sloop-rigged motorsailer named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5037" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Calabuig30.54m (100'2&quot;)">Calabuig</a> was of alloy construction and was built for an Italian owner.Another decade was to pass before the Ron Holland designed sloop Royal Eagle II of 30.5-metres was delivered to her American owner in 1989.
