Today the brokerage house <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> has announced the appointment of Chris Andreason as the firm’s Director of Yacht Management. With a diverse marine background that began in the Navy at the age of 16, Chris has developed from officer to superyacht captain, to build captain and finally build project manager. As a result, Chris is due to bring a wealth of experience to the brokerage house, in addition to a passion for mentorship that he will now turn to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> team. We sat down with Chris ahead of his appointment, to get an insight into how he intends to develop the yacht management department of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>, and to understand what has driven him to take on this next challenge.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303875/image/large-b98057736855f7bd1d54784bac5f3f5c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303875">Can you share a bit of your professional background and what initially drew you to the marine sector?I was born in Portsmouth and grew up watching the ships come and go. From a very young age I knew I wanted to work at sea, and it was a toss up between the Royal Marines and Royal Navy. In the end only the Navy was recruiting when I signed up at 16, so I joined up as a Junior Seaman. Fortunately I played a lot of rugby and that brought me to the attention of the right people, who pulled me out and sent me to Dartmouth to train as an officer.&nbsp;I spent 10 years in the Navy, and then just as I was thinking about leaving I saw an article about Robert Maxwell’s mysterious death aboard Lady Ghislaine (58-metre Amels yacht now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/866" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dancing Hare57.7m (189'4&quot;)Amels1986">Dancing Hare</a>). Immediately I thought, ‘I wonder who drives those things’ and that was really a trigger point for me. At the same time Peter Bennett had put an ad in Navy News advertising <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/336" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluewater Yachting (Company)">Bluewater</a> as a crew agent and I was one of his first captains. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220869/image/large-e703edcfb3229dfc5628be99d2f125c6.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220869">Since then you have been captain, refit and new-build captain and project manager. How did you take on each of those experiences and build your portfolio of projects?I think you have to work your way up through the system, much like in the Navy, and if you are proactive and eager to learn, those experiences build your capabilities and reputation. I have been fortunate to work on three new-build projects, two at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1502" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fountainhead87.78m (287'12&quot;)Feadship2011">Fountainhead</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/285" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nectar65.2m (213'11&quot;)Feadship2006">Callisto</a>), and one at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking</a> (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4094" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Grace81.0m (265'9&quot;)Abeking & Rasmussen2014">Grace</a>). Before <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/285" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nectar65.2m (213'11&quot;)Feadship2006">Callisto</a>, I’d managed the five year refit of the first Solemates (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ostar52.0m (170'7&quot;)Feadship1998">Ostar</a>) and that taught me a huge amount about project management, the yard and what yards and crew needed during those periods.&nbsp;In fact, my interview for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/285" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nectar65.2m (213'11&quot;)Feadship2006">Callisto</a> new-build captaincy, not that I knew it was an interview at the time, was a one-month charter aboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ostar52.0m (170'7&quot;)Feadship1998">Solemates</a>. You build those capabilities over time and as you get older, you begin to think ‘what's next?’<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/236129/image/large-f326a71dd7e52019806d329233790122.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/236129"> What was the moment you decided to move shoreside?I never wanted to be the old captain competing with, and diminishing, younger crew, I always wanted to be part of the generation that helps, encourages and empowers the next generation. I decided to take on relief work and that ended up being a really interesting period, because you see the best and the worst in terms of yacht management, crew challenges and resolution. Sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up and work out how to make a situation better for the crew and owner and it became my goal to leave a positive impact. Many of those young officers have gone on to become chief officers and superyacht captains and I am proud that I’m still in touch with a large number who continue to reach out to me for advice. Helping those crew develop and ensuring that they don't fall into the holes I did has become a real driver for me and is something I really look forward to bringing to this role at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>.&nbsp;Mentorship is clearly a big passion of yours, how do you plan to bring this to your next role?I was incredibly lucky throughout my career in the Navy and in yachting, to receive great support from some great individuals, and those people really shaped my career. Not everyone has that fortune, but I think we have a responsibility to offer those opportunities. In my early conversations with Alex Holden of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>, we talked a lot about the leadership and mentorship experience I've developed over recent years – such as my monthly webinars with BZ Maritime Leadership where I open up candid conversations with 30-40 captains and give them a safe space to discuss their concerns and experiences.What I have realised is that many of the issues captains experience are shared, and it is likely that I myself have experienced them during my career. Helping others to overcome those problems and challenges is really what makes me tick and Alex really picked up on that during our conversations. It is certainly a big part of what we want to bring into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>’s Yacht Management department.What, for you, are the key skill sets that successful yacht managers need and how do you plan to&nbsp;help them develop those skills?It is the responsibility of the yacht management team to support the owners and captains with the right level of operational, technical, financial and administrative knowledge. The management of a superyacht is not a one person job, and successful management requires a team of experts working together. We will ensure that anyone working with our owners and brokers has a strong technical and maritime background with the right training to properly advise their crew. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> yacht management department already has a number of very experienced team members. We will be the ones to set the scene and inspire confidence in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> team for the client, and then the yacht managers have that thorough knowledge to back up the technical crew and those who are working with captains and crew day-to-day.I think it’s important to note that I am not suddenly going to become the captains’ champion. Of course, I will be the captain’s champion, provided that they are working professionally and being reasonable in the demands that they make of the management teams. What I hope to bring to the table is the ability to understand and articulate the challenges that captains face, in order to resolve them in a more structured way, which is better for the crew and better for the owner.&nbsp;Were you already familiar with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>&nbsp;and why did you decide to work with them?&nbsp;Interestingly, in all my years in the industry, I have never worked with Edmiston and in a way, that made the decision very easy for me because I had no preconceived notions about the firm and no favours to call in. Over the years I have been approached by other brokerage houses for similar roles, but It was never the right time for me to step away from a life, at least partially, onboard. When I was approached about this role, I was prepared to go 100 percent for the position because I had no agenda and because they seem to share my passion and ethics for building a strong and educated team.&nbsp;What are you most looking forward to within this role, and is there anything you feel will be particularly challenging?All the things that make me tick align with E<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">dmiston</a>’s company mentality. They are committed to crew welfare, the leadership and mentoring of the team and to be a part of an organisation that is determined to be a force for good within that is very important to me. Having a platform to address the challenges that people face within this sector is very exciting. I also think that the talent pool that comes into yachting is very small when compared to other sectors, and so we have a responsibility to strengthen the skills and abilities of those people who choose yachting as their career.&nbsp;I firmly believe that as an industry we expect too little from people when it comes to training, and that the baseline of safety standards are too low, with yachts and crew expected to meet only the minimum requirements. We should be working to the highest standards, but bringing that to the table is going to be a challenge. I am not looking to break the wheel, but I believe there are others out there with a similar mindset who are willing to do things differently, and I am excited that Edmiston sees the potential.&nbsp;

The refit was overseen by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1339" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="KK Superyachts (Company)">KK Superyachts</a> and designer Olivia Outred was responsible for the changes to the yacht. The Dutch shipyard had to temporarily extend both its sheds to accommodate the yacht. “Your customers grow bigger, so you have to grow with them,” said Daan Balk about the occasion. Following an eight-month refit period at Balk Shipyard in the Netherlands, the 57.7-metre Amels motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/866" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dancing Hare57.7m (189'4&quot;)">Dancing Hare</a> has left Dutch waters in time for the summer cruising season. The project was overseen by KK Superyachts and involved designer Olivia Outred who is responsible for the various interior and exterior cosmetic changes on board.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/38797/image/large-7b4dd1981be5e7a294c65fc2c8c55668.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/38797">Work started on a technical level where equipment was overhauled and serviced to meet the latest standards. From an exterior perspective, the sundeck has been lengthened by four metres and finished with glass railings that wrap the deck. 58m superyacht Dancing Hare departs Holland after refit

Though the superyacht business is a relatively small industry, it is packed with international professionals from all walks of life, and it can certainly be easy to get lost in the sea of faces we are presented with at boat shows, yachting events and beyond. In this series of articles, we take a step back from rushed business meetings and hurried networking and sit down with professionals from across the wide spectrum of the superyacht business to learn more about who they are and what they do for the industry. In this week’s episode, we get to know Daan Balk, the CEO of Balk Shipyard in the Netherlands.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28773/image/large-92685eb0cd77178c5899a272179e7cac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28773"> Balk has a very long history and heritage, and I was wondering if you could talk to me about the history of the yard and why that’s important to you. &nbsp; Balk has a long history, this year we are celebrating 220 years of being established and I feel a real connection with our heritage. I am the seventh generation to run the yard, and we have three sons at home and they are already talking about the shipyard. My wife Stella and I put in the effort to make sure they make their own choices. It would be great they take over the yard but Stella and I want them to know that there are many great things you can do for a living! I took over the company when I was 28, my father passed away when he was 57 and it was a big financial risk for me to take over the company because the yard was in bad shape at that time. The advice of people involved was "please don’t do it: use your brains and don’t step into this!’", but I had to do it, and then we got things back on track to where we are today, and we're really pleased: things are looking up. We started in Elburg and then expanded after 5-6 years, moving to our present facilities in Urk.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28799/image/large-e0dd805c4fabf45efe8ce4365251cc02.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28799"> Above all, you are known for being a refit yard. Why have you decided to focus almost exclusively on refit and rebuild projects rather than the new build market?&nbsp; Refit and rebuild are so much a part of our heritage. Even if I look back in history, the older Balk shipyard in Elburg looked after all the local fishing vessels. If someone bought a new one, they went to Urk for new builds, but we were always the local yard that was there for maintenance and repair and we are proud to continue this tradition today. New build is a completely different game: you need different organisation, different people and, above all, a different mindset.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/17409/image/large-8bc556d1c0519092926c8b2f89430101.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17409"> Dancing Hare&nbsp;at the shipyard in Urk.&nbsp; That said, you are planning to move to a new, larger facility which will also be in Urk. Could this be an opportunity for more new build projects?&nbsp; Certainly. The new facility will be triple the size of this one, which is perfect because we are fighting our borders at the moment. When we were moving the 57.7-metre Amels, Dancing Hare, into the yard for her refit recently, we had to add a temporary extension to both sheds! We are arriving in the same situation as were in Elburg: the opportunity is there, so I said let’s jump. Your customers grow bigger, so you have to grow with them. As for the new build, the new premises will offer us the space to set up a separate building for this, and it's something I want. In addition, since 2016, we have also been the proud owner of the shipyard Jachtwerf Bloemsma, which enables us to do business on new build projects. Refit is great, and you’re always the good guy: people are pleased that you make their boat nice again and even better! But I have done all my education in shipbuilding and I would feel complete if I could say, "that one and that one and that one" are boats that we have built, to show the world that we can do that as well. I will wait for my opportunity to come and be patient.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/23342/image/large-e6808b1eb697aaf4045d733b4913c50d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23342">Alumercia&nbsp;arriving at Balk for her refit in JanuaryTell me more about one of your most recent refit projects, the 37.7m Heesen Alumercia&nbsp;which has been recently renamed Unexpected.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are developing the scope for Alumercia&nbsp;at the moment. We already had an established relationship with the owner, we did a 50-metre project with him five years ago and so he trusts us completely. With Alumercia, that trust is 100%, there are no management companies involved, even the crew is not there yet. We were also part of the sale of the boat before he brought her here. He said,&nbsp;“please Daan, advise me, I am keen to purchase the boat but I wish you to be my partner when we will sell it." We also have confidence in the owner that he won't let us down with unpaid bills or with unreasonable requests like&nbsp;"the boat needs to be ready next week" and everybody knows it’s another month. Those are the projects you look forward to as a company.&nbsp;Alumerica is already 18 years old, so there is quite some work to do: a full paint job, a change to the interior, guest cabins, main cabins, main lounge, sky lounge, the engine room, new generators, all the tenders, the deck. It’s typical of what you see when someone purchases a boat and they want to make it their own. It’s like if you’re going to rent a room or a house, the kitchen, the bathroom. These are things you want to feel fresh and clean and say "this is mine."<img src="/uploads/store/photo/23341/image/large-28841fc8fa9bc8111245951d86878755.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23341"> Finally, what have you got planned in the future?Eventually, we may go bigger than our current focus on 40-50-metre boats, if you look at what we’ve been doing for Feadship, these are all 70-80 metre boats and those boats will be in need of maintenance in the upcoming years. Soon, we will move from 50-60-metres and we should be ready to have a 60-metre plus, but I think 70-metres will be the maximum for us for some time.&nbsp;At the new premises, we may also have one shed for local customers to leave their boats in for winter storage. We want to make a step forward, but, in my opinion, one step back is also necessary, as we stopped serving local clients 10 years ago, and I've never felt at ease with that. We did it very gently and nobody was disadvantaged, but it was a difficult separation and I never had a good feeling about it. It makes me feel good to open the doors for them and welcome them again.&nbsp;

The 57.7-metre motor yacht, Dancing Hare&nbsp;(ex. Lady Mona K, Lady Ghislane ) has arrived at the Dutch shipyard, Balk to begin an extensive winter refit.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/17414/image/large-0d4410793ee360a514eee0470f023190.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17414">The 57.7-metre motor yacht Dancing Hare&nbsp;was built by the Dutch shipyard Amels and delivered in 1986, with both interior and exterior designs by Bannenberg.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/17411/image/large-7a11674c9c6747ef6c992d3c08e45576.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17411"> <img src="/uploads/store/photo/17407/image/large-69caa0a1657da6bf03d4812cc2536ca3.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17407">Dancing Hare&nbsp;arrived at the yard's premises at the end of October after completing a six-day cruise from the South of France. Due to her recent sale in September this year, and considering the fact that her last big refit was 24 years ago in 1993, her new owner, represented by KK Superyachts in Monaco, decided to begin the refit this year.&nbsp;The 57.7-metre motor yacht is currently being hauled out and shunted into the yard’s biggest refit hall. Dancing Hare arrives at Balk for winter refit 

KK Superyachts has announced the sale of the 57.7-metre Amels superyacht, Lady Mona K.&nbsp;After working closely with the buyer on an extensive search of the market over several months, Jukka Kaukonen today closed the sale with just 24 hours until the start of the Monaco Yacht Show.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/14043/image/large-f4cbacc61ee58bb2729cc24575011bb5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/14043">Lady Mona K was built by Dutch shipyard Amels in 1986, and boasts timeless interior and exterior designs from the drawing board of yacht design legend Jon Bannenberg. On board she accommodates 12 guests across six staterooms, as well as a crew of 13. Powered by twin Caterpillar 3516 DITA engines, she has a top speed of 15.5 knots, and a cruising speed of 14 knots.&nbsp;Following completion of the sale, Jukka Kaukonen commented:&nbsp;"She is a truly iconic Dutch explorer yacht that's belonged to the same owner for the last 22 years. She's even been maintained and operated by the same Captain during this time. Her outstanding condition is testament to the skill and professionalism of her Captain and crew who have been a pleasure to work with."&nbsp;The sale was a collaboration with Jean Marie Recamier from Camper &amp; Nicholson who represented the seller and who sold the yacht to the previous owner 22 years ago. The most recent listed asking price for Lady Mona K&nbsp;was $14,500,000.&nbsp;
