Richard Pearce grew up sailing all kinds of boats near his family home on the River Hamble in Hampshire. The son of a naval captain, he studied naval architecture at Southampton and first worked for the Ministry of Defence, initially in submarine design and then in the Future Projects department, where he explored innovative naval concepts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377546/image/large-1b6383d2e0dc03d52e3ba408046a74af.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377546"> Realising that working for the government meant his projects were unlikely to come to fruition, he joined maritime consultants <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/273" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burness Corlett Three Quays International Limited (Company)">Burness Corlett Three Quays (BCTQ)</a>. It was during his time there that a chance encounter launched his career as an owner’s representative. He set up Waterproof, his own Barcelona-based consultancy firm, in 2013. One day, I was tasked with a pre-purchase survey for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/299" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Le Grand Bleu112.8m (370'1&quot;)Bremer Vulkan2000">Le Grand Bleu</a> and while on board, I met the prospective owner and his team walking down the crew corridor. They asked me if they could remove the lifeboats on her side decks and I told them that they couldn’t, because of the regulations. They didn’t much like that and argued that they’d been told they could, but I stood my ground. After they bought the yacht, they contacted me again about removing the lifeboats, but I stuck to my position. Eventually, they came back to me when they wanted to build a new yacht, which became Eclipse. I guess they appreciated my frankness. Over the years, I’ve found that saying "no" has led to the most significant opportunities. People usually appreciate honesty, even when it’s not what they want to hear.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/24464/image/large-93ab5552bf51eb9cc0c1c4e0141b4c9e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/24464">How would you define your relationship with your clients?It’s a professional relationship with a personal touch. I spend a lot of time with my clients, but I’m not their friend. They call me their "boat man" as one of many specialists they have for managing different aspects of their lives. I’m there to build them amazing yachts, but you have to give them the bad news as well and find a way to do that on a personal level. An owner's rep should be as upfront as possible, and from that you can build a relationship based on trust, which is key. If they trust you and you’ve built that rapport, they’re open to suggestions. But you need to approach it carefully, especially when it’s something they may not want to hear.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194689/image/large-6176d975c171325dfd51904a544ffd6f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194689">On the other side, you have to also build a relationship of trust with the shipyard.Yes, it’s a delicate balance. I’ve had both good and bad relationships with shipyards. Sometimes, there’s been tension for various reasons and I’ve been involved in arbitration, which is never good for the project, the client or the shipyard. Luckily, I've had ‘ethical’ clients in that they want to build good boats and they want the shipyard to be able to make money, but they don't want to be abused or overcharged. My job is to ensure that doesn’t happen and diplomacy plays a big role. Trust, honesty and clear communication from both sides are crucial.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/5201/image/large-72906b3755ef078e84b4c3bcf94e4bfa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/5201">How has your role developed since you started out in the business?My job has evolved along with the industry. Everything is faster and the projects are more complex. I was using AutoCAD when I started out 20 years ago, but my job now is about facilitating and making sure everyone’s on the same page, keeping the client informed and prioritising decisions – more about managing the process and less about technical execution. Clients can get overwhelmed with too many choices and if you ask them to make 20 decisions at once, it just won’t happen. You have to focus on what’s most important and guide them through it step by step. If you can narrow it down to just a few key decisions, it keeps things moving and the project stays on track. Owners are generally receptive if you present the advice in the right way. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/53492/image/large-e2a0d5cac2695afb47496db3411bac19.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53492">How do you make sure everyone is on the same page?Every project needs a reason or an identity, which can connect the project team and client on the path of creation. For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Pelorus</a> it was groundbreaking design; for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/270" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Octopus126.2m (414'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Octopus</a> it was extensive engineering; for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nebula68.2m (223'9&quot;)Astilleros Armon2022">Nebula</a> it was building a support vessel with a focus on helicopter operations, tenders and crew life. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonrise99.95m (327'11&quot;)Feadship2020">Moonrise</a> was the client’s first new-build and was about allowing him to create something of his own, but also teaching him what he needed to know and guiding him through each step. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6847" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Solaris139.7m (458'4&quot;)Lloyd Werft2021">Solaris</a> was about pushing the design with novel solutions and building a project with features that many yards wanted to dilute. The whole process can be very rewarding when everyone involved understands the project’s raison d'être and can follow the necessary steps to achieve it. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/69914/image/large-c342ca767d5e34b87b6252f8144bccd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/69914">It's a high-stakes environment to navigate – how do you manage the pressure?It can definitely be nerve-wracking, but having a team around you that you trust makes all the difference. I’m fortunate now that I can choose my projects. I’ve made a conscious decision to keep my company small and lean. In Barcelona, there are just three of us and we have technical teams – project managers, naval architects, engineers, and interior specialists, either direct employees or long-term freelancers – working on individual projects. We fight, disagree, swap ideas, compromise, make decisions, but at the end we celebrate together. Yes, it can stressful, but it's also an adrenaline rush. The advantage was that I’d spent four years as a cadet learning the ropes before even taking a watch on a ship. Years of seagoing experience then gave me a really good basis to build on. I suppose a disadvantage, at least at the beginning, was that I didn’t fully appreciate the concept of ‘yacht finish’ and attention to detail. But my commercial experience soon taught me that simply throwing money at a project isn’t enough. You have to focus resources on what is important for the owner. For example, I see no point in having beautiful, stainless-steel mooring bitts if the mooring deck is hidden or enclosed and somewhere the owner will never visit. Since coming ashore and setting up my own consultancy, however, I’m more of an owner’s representative and now find myself taking input and ideas from the crew. If you ask ten chefs what they want in a galley, for example, you’ll get ten different answers. So I’m basically the conduit between the owner, shipyard and crew, and spend a disproportionate amount of my time dealing with lawyers!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/100603/image/large-2ba539e9cde15116f7b293fb32eec0d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100603">Nearly all the yachts you’ve been involved with have been over 100 metres in length. Was that intentional on your part?Initially, my Class 1 certificate meant people were looking for my qualifications and so it was an easy in, if you like. I attained my Class 1 Master Mariner’s certificate when I was 28, although it took a few more years before I was trusted with the command of a vessel. There weren’t many superyachts over 3,000 gross tons at that time, but you could see they were coming. But my biggest job has always been managing the crew and, if I’m honest, from an operational point of view the right size is within that 100-metre mark, because once you go above 45 or 50 crew the dynamic changes considerably. I spent four years as captain on 96-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1711" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vava II96.0m (314'12&quot;)Devonport2012">Vava II</a> where we generally ran about 35 crew on board, which was manageable and fun. On <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Eclipse162.5m (533'2&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH2010">Eclipse</a>, on the other hand, we were up to 75 or even 85 at times, which is like being back on a cruise ship.You’re currently working on the conversion of a supply vessel. How does that differ from a new-build from your perspective as owner’s rep?There is a certain satisfaction in repurposing an existing vessel. We were very lucky to find a donor vessel that lends itself very well to conversion and had been laid up for almost her entire life, so minimum wear and tear. But it’s more difficult in some ways compared to a new build, because you’re starting with an existing platform and any faults that may come with it. You have to be very careful with budgeting by looking at the vessel and working out what you have to replace, upgrade or refurbish while keeping the vessel maintained throughout the conversion period, such as laying her up properly and mothballing the engines so she’s good to go when the work is finished. Once you start dismantling bulkheads you can come across all sorts of things you didn’t expect and that can get expensive, so you have to budget for the unforeseen as well.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/100113/image/large-c05992f1973329e9da397b620f18e6e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100113">Does it take a special set of skills to be an owner’s rep?Owner’s representative is an interesting job title as I don’t think there’s a particular skill set that covers everything, and people that do my job come from all walks of life. I think my background as an operational captain for many years brings a lot of things to a project I thought were missing on builds I’ve been involved with in the past – it’s interesting that even the most respected shipyards sometimes miss stuff. Just as important is being used to dealing with owners. I’ve had close relationships with the owners of the private yachts I’ve worked on and – dare I say it – you learn how to talk to them, put a point across and get what you need for the sake of the project and the benefit of the owner. Modern charter clients expect ample storage for water toys, tenders, and other equipment. Meet the makers: Masterful craftsmanship onboard superyachts

With a career spanning more than two decades, an exceptional line up of yachts to his name and more than 300 metres of yacht launched last year alone, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4540" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vickers Studio (Company)">John Vickers</a> is a man worth speaking to. Starting his career as one of the first designers at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">Redman Whiteley Dixon (now RWD)</a>, John cut his teeth on the myriad of major projects that the studio underwent in its foundling years and by the age of only 27 he was project managing the interior design of the 155-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Said155.0m (508'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2008">Al Said</a>. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291899/image/large-72c586f3536c174c52b3f2aae0804dc0.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291899">Originally destined for a life onboard, John has a deep love of classic yachts but realised quite quickly that he needed an injection of creativity in his life to keep him excited. John built the team and together they worked on the design of the 62-metre Candyscape II, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/418" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sealion62.0m (203'5&quot;)VSY2009">Sealion</a>, completing the interior and exterior design in only four months and going on to win the best superyacht awards for the first build of a brand new Italian shipyard. After leaving <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/423" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Candy & Candy (Company)">Candy &amp; Candy</a> in 2007, John was asked to join the studio of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Terence Disdale Design (Company)">Terence Disdale</a>, one of the industry’s most well respected and longest standing firms. After several years overlooking the Thames the studio escaped the city to a barn conversion studio near Chichester harbour on the UK’s beautiful south coast. The passion from the studio is obvious with the level of detail and care taken with the owners' dream projects. John loves to listen and create unique designs with creative layers in each pen line and shape. “We love to perfect the exterior in conjunction with the layout, which also gets the best results for the interior design. Having solved so many interior design problems, we find that often the interior designer gets brought in last for a project, in reality they should be involved right from the start helping create a really spectacular layout. It has meant that the majority of his new-builds have won superyacht awards, even when not building at top tier shipyards. “It’s not something you can ever guarantee, but we have seemed to do it fairly regularly’; something that might be of interest to shipyards and clients wanting this level of top industry recognition. In the last eight years, many have been semi custom and refits tailored meticulously to very varied tastes and styles of the client”. However, John’s personal aesthetic direction includes yacht style such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6037" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue II55.99m (183'8&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2020">Blue II&nbsp;</a>or elegant beach house vibes like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Calypso I36.0m (118'1&quot;)Mulder Shipyard2019">Calypso</a>. It is a strength which has been particularly important over recent years with the increase of refit projects and a much higher demand for short new-build completions. In 2022 alone John’s team completed the refit of 75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Meserret III75.0m (246'1&quot;)Peene-Werft GmbH1992">Leander</a>, 88.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4794" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Infinity88.5m (290'4&quot;)Oceanco2015">Cloud 9</a> and 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6595" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanbird53.0m (173'11&quot;)Sanlorenzo2021">Oceanbird</a>, as well as the new-build interior design of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> 56.5-metre Alma and they are adept at working on an array of complex projects simultaneously.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291302/image/large-edcda66b5f582287fa165d634a2a5320.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291302">“Because of my 23 years experience we have become specialists in producing a lot of quality design work to a very tight schedule, and also coming into difficult projects late and turning them around under pressure. We recently did a very demanding and detailed refit on the 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6595" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanbird53.0m (173'11&quot;)Sanlorenzo2021">Oceanbird</a>, we expanded the team to 15 strong and produced 24 visuals and 50 CAD drawings in less than four weeks, and for the 75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Meserret III75.0m (246'1&quot;)Peene-Werft GmbH1992">Leander</a> we completed full layout redesign with complicated interior joinery creation all for a very experienced owner on four-decks in only eight weeks.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237702/image/large-0ed4b3794019bf9b0d5c2d5d4a5ce007.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237702">Over the coming year he hopes to further expand the portfolio of projects, with his team of design experts and with two refits and a number of new-builds already underway.

As the largest yacht currently in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> fleet, she comes with several special features on board and was built as the first superyacht to accommodate tilt-rotor aircraft on her foredeck landing pad. With a striking exterior design by Hampshire-based designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/25" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Michael Leach Design Ltd. (Company)">Michael Leach</a> and naval architecture by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/30" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Voogt Naval Architects (Company)">De Voogt Naval Architects</a>, the four-deck yacht Anna was named after the owner’s daughter. The interior design of the 4,693 GT superyacht is the result of a collaboration between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/25" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Michael Leach Design Ltd. (Company)">Leach</a> and Brian J. McCarthy, Inc. The UK-based award-winning firm was also responsible for interior design, deck layouts and they also supervised her construction. For many years, satellite (VSAT) has been the main source of superyacht internet. However, within the last two years, as onshore 4G infrastructure has rapidly improved, LTE broadband has come into the market, offering speeds which by far exceed what even a very expensive VSAT contract can offer.&nbsp;For example, a 10 Mbps VSAT profile (MIR, with a guaranteed speed of just 2.5 Mbps) would cost an average of $5000-6000 dollars per month. 10 Mbps is not a lot considering that, as a rule of thumb, you need 25 Mpbs to watch one movie in 4K resolution.In comparison, a yacht can get an unlimited LTE data plan in the Mediterranean for between 2000-3000 euros per month and benefit from speeds ranging between 80 and 300 Mbps depending on the vessel’s location. That is comparable to what you would expect onshore with fiberoptics. Recent developments implemented by both cellular networks and equipment manufacturers have allowed for significant extensions in offshore 4G coverage. For example, <a href="https://www.meridian5g.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Meridian 5G,&nbsp;</a>a company that develops and manufactures 4G/5G equipment specifically for superyachts, has been able to extend its clients’ 4G coverage offshore up to 45 nautical miles (85km).Meridian 5G’s equipment is used by notable yachts and research vessels ranging from 25-160+ metres in size, including Eclipse,&nbsp;Al Mirqab, <em style='box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 13.6px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;'>Luna, Radiant, Barbara, Nirvana,&nbsp;Ragnar&nbsp;and many more.SuperYacht Times reached out to several vessels using Meridian’s DOME router equipment for comment. “We were refuelling in Albania and realized that, even though we didn’t have SIM cards covering Albania, we still had great 4G speed. It turned out that our Meridian dome router still connected to a Wind tower in Italy that was 75 kilometres away”, says Alexey Kuyevda, chief engineer on board motor yacht Apostrophe.He continues: “What was even more astonishing was that we had 50 Mbps download speed and 30 upload speed. When we used a Pepwave, we rarely got that much, even when we were close to shore.”&nbsp;Another yacht which has opted not to use VSAT is the 41-metre Lady Jade, which observed speeds “good enough for emails and file downloads at 46.3 nautical miles”. This was more than 85 kilometres from the nearest shore off Corfu.In addition, a screenshot taken from a device on board the 83.5-metre motoryacht Savannah while it was cruising in Greece shows that, at 99 kilometres from the nearest cellular tower, the yacht still experienced 21 Mbps download speed and 16 Mbps upload speed.&nbsp;“They weren’t that far from the nearest shore”, comments Dasha Grupman, CEO of Meridian 5G. “But the SIM cards they used only allowed them to connect to the Vodafone network in Greece, and the nearest Vodafone tower was that far away!”“We also observe that a tower located 70 kilometres away can sometimes provide better data connection than a tower which is only a few kilometres away”, Grupman continues. “An example of this would be when you are in a busy port in which the networks and cellular towers are simply overloaded. If you can then connect to a tower further away that is not getting the same load – since most cellular devices can’t reach that far – you would receive a far better, faster and more stable connection.”&nbsp;With all of the above in mind, therefore, the ever more readily-available 4G offers the ideal solution for getting high-quality internet on board – and the technology is only improving, so watch this space! <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/22062/image/large-f728daabe90278ffb38ee006b9783b76.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/22062">

It is no coincidence that ‘nausea’ comes from naus, the Greek word for ‘ship’. Thankfully, whether underway or at anchor, there are two main types of product – fins and rotors – that can significantly control the roll and minimise onboard motion sickness.&nbsp;Stabilisation systems have evolved from being uncommon technology found only on the largest superyachts to must-have pieces of gear, whatever the size of boat. With so many new innovations entering the market in recent years, SuperYacht Times asks <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum</a> to explain the technology behind this fast-moving field. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/114912/image/large-54d5241461fdb436bafc8a9c1e28a38a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/114912">What makes one stabiliser different from the other?In the larger yacht market, fin stabilisers are an industry standard, but the proprietary controls are one of the major differentiators. For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum</a>, it starts with a roll sensor. Imagine that you are dining on board and a huge wave hits – the roll sensor will detect the wave and transmit the roll angle and roll velocity to the main controller for processing. It is possible to remove up to 90% of the roll, however, the sea state is a key factor, as larger sea states require greater fin area and hydraulic power. To maximise comfort at Zero Speed™, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum</a> recommends keeping the yacht’s average roll angle (RMS value) below a threshold which is in proportion to the vessel's roll period. As an example, a vessel with a 10 second roll period should have a stabiliser system that is capable of reducing the average roll angle to 0.59º in 1-metre seas.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/100999/image/large-0483513c0ca6ac246769222ef2f0780a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100999">Why is there no industry standard for motion comfort?One of the biggest variables in any stabilisation decision is the owner's expectations. It doesn’t help that there is currently no industry standard available, specifically for Zero Speed™, to assess motion comfort aboard large yachts. After all, we react to the same stimuli in different ways, and accelerations that might not bother a seasoned sailor can send a less experienced guest running for the nearest dayhead.&nbsp;The problem is being addressed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), and a working group led by MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) is finalising a report expected to be published shortly that aims to provide a comfort criterion with a numerical value that also takes into account human variations.&nbsp;“Stabiliser suppliers make different claims about how their systems increase onboard comfort, but the general public doesn’t know how to quantify this effect,” explains Enrico Della Valentina, who is heading up the ISO working group and Senior Project Manager at the MARIN. “There is currently no unified method which naval architects and other specialists can use to do this. The new ISO standard will make this assessment more easily understandable by presenting the results in a 5-star system, whereby the higher the number of stars, the greater the level of comfort.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/99068/image/large-d5856e6875a20023e82764b16ec1452f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99068">What is the solution for series-model yachts?Over the past several years, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum</a> has supplied stabiliser solutions to the larger yacht market (60+ metre), a segment that requires a high level of customisation with each system. Refit contract for 110m superyacht Jubilee signed with Lürssen

After topping the sales market last year, the new owners of the 110m superyacht Jubilee have decided to sign a refit contract with Lürssen.

Completed in 2013 by Lürssen at its facility in Lemwerder, Germany, Azzam outranks the second longest yacht in the world, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Eclipse162.5m (533'2&quot;)">Eclipse</a> by nearly 20 metres. The vessel is currently hauled out at Blohm &amp; Voss' famous Dock 11 in Hamburg, Germany.

It’s a fair, late-spring London morning and I’m making way through the hordes of overly-determined rush-hour commuters. Lugging an outrageously heavy suitcase whilst going over my interview questions, I’m frantically checking Google Maps to find the renowned design studio nestled away in Richmond. Needless to say, a few minutes later, I’m relieved to find myself off the London Underground and sat comfortably with a cup of tea at the meeting table of the Terence Disdale Design studio. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/46518/image/large-4c54e2601a646160f0c56dc3c785433e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46518">I was prepared to feel a little on edge… this is, after all, the studio of the world-renowned designer who has penned such iconic designs as the 81-metre Abeking &amp; Rasmussen yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4094" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kibo81.0m (265'9&quot;)">Kibo</a>, the 147.25-metre Lürssen-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3962" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Topaz147.25m (483'1&quot;)">Topaz</a>, and, of course, the largest yacht in the world at the time of her launch: the 162.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Eclipse162.5m (533'2&quot;)">Eclipse</a> built by Blohm + Voss. Instead, I feel at ease. Surrounded by beautifully intriguing furniture, pieces of strange, exotic and wildly expensive materials and, of course, a couple of tables full of shining Neptune trophies... This place is sophisticated but homey, and reassuringly cool. But I’m not here to merely admire Terence Disdale’s office, I’m here to sit down with Terence Disdale. And soon enough the man himself comes in and warmly greets me.&nbsp;Starting out in the business working under Jon Bannenberg in the late 60s (hired on the spot after turning up unannounced, politely refusing to make an appointment and instead wait patiently for a moment with Bannenberg!), Disdale broke off on his own in 1973 and is today one of the most celebrated icons of superyacht design. He points out a couple of sketches on the wall here and there as we make our way down to his studio, and stops to take me briefly through some of the gigantic superyacht models dotted around the walls. These projects are so bespoke, so private, that even though I know the names of the models in front of me, I’ve never had the chance to study them in such detail. In fact, much of Disdales best works may never be seen - at least not to the 99.9%. “Confidentiality is everything,” he tells me. “When you get to the level we are at now, our work is never published. The world probably thinks we retired years ago! You know, someone once asked me if I had made all the awards we have in our greeting room which I found quite funny… But our latest projects are so confidential that in the end we’ll probably have to make our own!” he laughs.We enter his studio, filled with light and overlooking a small, green garden. Very much living up to his ‘rockstar’ title, he immediately turns down the classic rock album blaring out of his old-school CD player in the corner of the room. Not quite living up to the rock star image in the same way, two adorable tiny dogs are also pretty excited to join us for the interview. “So,” I start, Chihuahua on knee. “Where did it all begin?”&nbsp;“I was born and bred in London and left school at 15 with little idea of what career path I would take,” he starts. “I’m only a yacht designer by accident - I really just wanted to be a designer, period. At first I worked at an engineering company as a junior engineering draughtsman - basically the tea boy - and was soon promoted when they realised I could actually draw. In the very early days, I was involved in film set design. You’re designing something to do with the Roman Empire one day, and the next you’re moving on to a sci-fi set. It’s brilliant! It’s really phenomenal how they can encompass all of these details, it takes a lot of talent. If I had have gone to work for someone other than Jon Bannenberg, I would have probably done something else.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/46523/image/large-5c997e8a4edc27430fec7adc5bc1dd13.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46523">You’re constantly described as the rockstar of superyacht design. Why?&nbsp;I only get called that because I’ve got long hair and wear cowboy boots! I guess I do also manage a rock band of a friend of mine, too. I’ve done that for about 20 years now. I did think once upon a time that if the band got successful I would travel the world with them, but you go where the wind blows you. I’m pretty entrenched in what I do with design… I’m not really a band manager. It was one of those dreams, you know. I like cars, but I never really thought about getting into car design.&nbsp;...Rock star status, the accidental journey to superyacht design and small talk covered, the conversation inevitably turns to superyachts. An expert of both exterior and interior design, it isn’t the general talk of how impressive, how large, or how luxurious any of the 70+ Disdale-designed vessels are that make his eyes light up. It’s quickly apparent that Disdale’s passion is in the small details: the seemingly inconsequential placement of a precious stone on a colossal bespoke piece of wall art, the creation of an opulent cabinet around a Zulu bracelet procured from the depths of Southern Africa, or the positioning of a fistfull of 17th century Dutch East India Trading Company coins floating in resin and acting as a table top.&nbsp;As we delve into the intricacies of design and the significance of interior decoration, Disdale heaves three hefty books to the table to pore over the unique nuances from yacht to yacht in more detail. We flick from page to page, with a story to tell for every image. “Which is your favourite?” I ask. Without a second's hesitation comes the answer. “It has to be&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Eclipse162.5m (533'2&quot;)">Eclipse</a>. She just is. Talk about carte blanche? She is carte blanche to the extreme.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/46521/image/large-1a2e57d78e193151ed8628372394b6e4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46521"> With such custom projects, where do you start? Are you working around a particular wow factor?&nbsp;I start with designing something that you won’t get bored to death of. The ‘wow factor’ is the most boring thing in the world. So how do you make something that’s interesting, but that doesn’t aim to knock your eyes out? Where do you draw this line of restraint? I see it as it’s happening. It’s a process. I didn’t have any formal design training, but it’s not like you open a book and can learn these things… it’s what you see and what you feel.&nbsp;Can you give me a couple of examples of particularly bespoke features?I did a boat that was to do 50 knots at 50-metres, with so much unusual stuff on board. I found a company who could make a particular type of bamboo walling at a furniture fair in Manila, so the yard sent all of these aluminium honeycomb panels to the Philippines, the guy covered them in bamboo, then they came back. The import charge to bring the panels in was 10 times more than what the job was worth - but this company was the only one who could do it right. If you talk about bespoke, we’re probably more bespoke than most people. It’s what gives all of our projects their uniqueness. You can’t go out and buy these things, you have to dream it up and make it happen.We also have to make sure we consider the human element when we are designing. The thick, seascape oil painting at the head of the meeting table in one of my most important projects, for example, is behind the head of the owner. We commissioned that specifically. You cannot put a Picasso behind the main-man, he needs to be the most powerful in the room. It’s not just decorative, it’s much more than that. There is a balance in keeping all of these things together.&nbsp;There are currently 8 Disdale-designed 90+ metre superyachts in the global fleet. Are there any challenges involved in these large projects that do not appear on the smaller side of the scale?A key challenge is working to the fire regs that these big boats have to comply with. On a boat of a certain size you have to have a handrail on each side of the wide passageways. You can end up looking like a cruise ship very quickly, so on one of our projects we carved the handrail into the furniture along the wall. You can probably argue that this piece of handrail is the most expensive in the whole world. I mean, it’s made of semi-precious stone. It was not an easy thing to execute!&nbsp;No matter what the size, considering that human element of the design is always a challenge. Not just the aesthetic or the functionality, but the human response. Things like creating a passing space on stairs or in hallways, so the guests will not be faced with crew retracing their steps down the stairs to pass. It’s all of this stuff that makes or breaks a boat. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/46520/image/large-81a092fe969b9fd172444d991f25be8f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46520">Where do you get your inspiration?&nbsp;Inspiration is everywhere. It depends where you look. I took a photograph in India of a hut made of palm trees, and I thought that would be a fantastic window frame on board one of my projects. I’ve spent a lot of my life fishing and camping, and it’s a lovely, enchanting thing to sit around a fire in the evening. That inspired the fire pit on one of my largest projects. I don’t think anyone had tried putting a fire pit on a boat before!But things also come from experimenting, and I learned a lot from my boss in one of my first jobs after an engineering draughtsman. We would take over what was a butcher’s shop, and he would turn it into a man’s clothes shop on a budget. He would know what to keep, what you could exploit, what needed to change, in short, how to make everything look fantastic with no money. He was my education.&nbsp;Do you also find inspiration from other yacht designers?No, not really... I don’t really like looking at other people’s boats. And working alongside other designers is a bit of pain, isn’t it? We’re a bunch of prima donnas. It’s me too, but I’m always going to be the loser on the interior if the other is doing the exterior. There is often a bit of conflict. The space planning is the first thing that happens, so if I’m designing a dining room, it would be nice if the table was in the middle of the room facing a window. But if someone gives you their plan, with a dining room without a window in the middle of the room, what can you do? I ask, but the answer is usually no because it ruins whatever schematic theme or form flowing through the superstructure. Quite often it’s a compromise. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/46522/image/large-ecee02b8ebaa4596d2c3d2d1d779ed39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46522">The 90-metre project currently in build at Oceanco is designed with an Espen Øeino exterior, with yourself undertaking the interior. Due for delivery next year, she was started on speculation. What was the brief?&nbsp;The original brief for the 90m was that this boat was my boat. So basically, there was no brief! Oceanco completed the 85.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/101" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunrays85.5m (280'6&quot;)">Sunrays</a> which featured my interior design. They told me that they loved <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/101" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunrays85.5m (280'6&quot;)">Sunrays</a>, and they want to move on to the next one with me. So we did.&nbsp;Working to my own brief meant we were able to do it much quicker. There was no client to go back and forth with, and I didn’t have to present my scheme to anyone. Eventually a client did come along before completion and I do have a brief now, which is to carry on creating a Disdale boat!When we did the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels Tigre D'Or 5049.99m (164'0&quot;)">Tigre D’Or&nbsp;</a>series of boats with Amels, the owner of those projects had a completely different idea. He wouldn’t put those on the market until the pictures were on the wall and the china was in the cupboard. Then you can charge your premium, because people either love it or hate it. That was a successful way to do it, but a lot of these speculative builders want to take the job so far and then get a client in to take over the costs. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/46519/image/large-e66c2aa4b3b05cf552f8e15e610f19d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46519">How often do you get that opportunity for free reign?There’s no such thing as free reign in terms of general arrangement… When it comes to decoration, yes, but every client has his or her lifestyle story. I can come up with a suggestion, with my interpretation of what they want, but it’s not total free reign.&nbsp;Though the level of full control over the design is of course determined by the owner, when you are as a prolific designer as Disdale, it’s safe to say those most clients trust their chosen designer to translate their personality into the design with little to no guidance. With one of Disdale’s most high-profile projects, the client “didn’t see it until the fire was lit. ”Was that scary," I ask? “I was nervous, yeah,” he grins. “But he was happy with it.” A true testament to the skills Disdale has honed over the past 45 years as a yacht designer.&nbsp;On that note, what’s next for the studio of Terence Disdale Design? Will Disdale be handing his pencil to someone else in the near future? “At the moment the origin of all of our designs comes from that drawing board right there,” he answers, gesturing to the window-facing drawing board littered with huge sketches. “But I have a talented team which helps me to make all my visions a reality with commitment and new creativity. I cannot predict the future but I see no reason to hang up my pencil anytime soon. In the future it’s a bit of a dream to start up a bespoke furniture company, and in an ideal world it would be nice to have a total production boat with a yard, with a series of 12 or so, which I have generally avoided throughout my career. Terence Disdale: The Art of Superyacht Design

The world’s former largest privately owned superyacht was seen arriving in Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades last week. The 162.5-metre Blohm+Voss-built Eclipse was considered the longest superyacht ever built up until 2011 when fellow German shipyard Lürssen launched the staggering 180-netre Azzam. Nevertheless, Eclipse remains one of the largest yachts afloat today and has received worldwide attention as a result of her famous owner as well as her award-winning design.

Le Grand Bleu and Eclipse off the island of St Barths

Once owned by the same man, seen here anchored side by side off the popular Caribbean island of St Barths are the two superyachts Le Grand Bleu and Eclipse. The 112-metre Le Grand Bleu was completed in 2000 and built by Bremer Vulkan in Germany to a design by Kusch Yacht Design. Parts of her interior were designed by Bannenberg &amp; Rowell Design. Le Grand Bleu has enjoyed the ownership of a host of famous and influential people.

 

Eclipse, on the other hand, remains under the same original ownership as the day when she was delivered by Blohm &amp; Voss in 2010. Certainly one of the most famous yachts in the world today, the 162.5-metre Eclipse was once known as the largest yacht in the world before the 180-metre Azzam claimed the top spot in 2013. Eclipse’s interior and exterior is the design work of the Terence Disdale Design studio.

Following a busy summer season many yachts have now moved onto more suitable cruising grounds, while some have chosen to take some much needed down-time in shipyards where crew will no doubt work hard at getting their yachts back in shape. The yacht was launched in April this year and embarked on her sea trials in July. Y.CO managed the build throughout and oversaw the past month’s final outfitting leading up to the delivery. The vessel’s interior and exterior was designed by Reymond Langton Design. Her exterior shape features grand sweeping curves and elegant proportions that resembles a feminine image, combined with masculine features such as defined lines and sculpted surfaces. Certainly one of the German shipyard’s most recognizable creations, the 95m Espen Oeino designed yacht was launched in July 2014 and is characterised by her glistening golden exterior and striking Jaguar figurehead on the bow. She is currently exploring the west coast of Mexico.Ocean Victory in Malaysia<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157242/image/large-768052af6a9923b912d37f0825d38b65.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157242">Completed by Fincantieri Yachts in 2014, Ocean Victory is designed by renowned designer Espen Oeino with interior spaces created by the late Alberto Pinto together with Sessa Romboli. As with many other yachts of this size, Ocean Victory is packed with guest-pleasing features such as 6 pools spread out over her 7 decks, an internal floodable dock to house her 14 metre tender, and two heli pads. The yacht’s owner is known to have owned a 75 metre Feadship also named Ocean Victory, which is now called Ebony Shine. Currently listed as the 4th largest yacht in the world, it is interesting that Al Said is in fact far larger than the three yachts which surpass her in length, with a total volume of 15,850 tons. She is also one of the most powerful yachts in the fleet, with a total of 16,399 kilowatts. The yacht's exterior is designed by Espen Oeino, with an interior by Redman Whiteley Dixon. She may have been pushed back to the second spot by the 180 metre Azzam, at 162.5 metres, she remains highly impressive nevertheless. The yacht is on a cruise of Northern Europe right now, and she was spotted in Bergen Norway in June, and in Scotland a couple of days ago. The huge yacht, owned by a well known Russian businessman, accommodates 36 guests and can carry up to 100 crew members. Superyacht Dubai docked at Logos Island, Dubai

Blohm+Voss has built some of the most iconic yachts in the world. In the 90s the yard made waves with vessels such as Lady Moura and ECO, and more recently with A, Eclipse and Palladium. The yard introduced a new model at the Monaco Yacht Show this year, the 80 metre BV80. In Qatar I sat down with their Managing Director, Dr. Herbert Aly.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151640/image/large-6599558f0e7000fa874e8dec0e45d7b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151640">Dr. Aly started with discussing an exciting project, the BV80. Speculating on whether or not the vessel was even going to be built in the future, Dr. Aly stated, “It is already sold, directly from the show in Monaco. A day after the show it was already sold. We expect the first steel cutting in July.”The BV80 project was already developed by Eidsgaard with Blohm &amp; Voss before the client came along, and Dr. Aly told us that the development of the project was started in January of this year.Talking about their collaboration on the superyacht, Dr. Aly states, “We liked their attitude. This is a very modern design, a bright design, and is new for us, and maybe new for the market. We had some very intense feedback from the market before starting the actual design work from some workshops in London with brokers, clients and captains. We were asking them what they would like to see on a vessel this size, and this is the outcome. We chose Eidsgaard and he has interpreted it very well.”The outcome is clearly well received by the industry and the shipyard’s clients, with Dr. Aly reporting over 40 interested clients to date.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151641/image/large-20cb4d6fdbc4b1689bb007dc738a5db0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151024">Though the BV80 project is semi-custom, Blohm + Voss are still ready to build custom projects and insist that one would not exist without another. Dr. Aly comments, “In our yard in Hamburg we have a huge capacity. This huge capacity needs to be fed, and they would never be fed by semi-custom vessels only.”So, with the business being fully satisfied by both sides of the building process, the Managing Director regards the mix as a more balanced business plan and, therefore, a better utilisation of all forces available.In regards to refit and repair services, Dr. Aly continues, saying, “It is of increasing importance to us. We have an excellent track record and for the time, we currently have two yachts in the yard and we’re hoping to see more.” In the future, refits at the German shipyard may include a 163 metre superyacht to add to the companies ever growing refit portfolio, which includes Octopus and, currently, Nahlin.Amidst rumours that have been circulating for a long time regarding a particularly large boatover 200 metres, Dr. Aly comments, “We would bid on it if it comes up and if it turns out to be real. We’ve seen 163 and 180 metres, but the majority of the really big yachts are around 130 to 140 metres, which is more seasonable size.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151642/image/large-07c127b3d8e98d2433437c478fe16e3f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151026">To conclude, SuperYacht Times asked Dr. Aly about the importance of the region of the show to Blohm + Voss, and identified the Gulf Region as one of the shipyards most important markets.He concludes, “You have to be here, simply. It will show whether we can find a potential client. The region itself is one out of three which are the most important of all for us, including Russia, the Gulf Region and the US. Andrew Weir Yacht Management (AWYM) has announced that the company has been contracted as the sole provider of technical management services to one of the worlds largest superyachts, the 162.50 metre Eclipse.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150215/image/large-3f5137117f9f99df1b6a805a140f3ff8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150215">This will include the provision of a full ISM system and related services including the appointment of a DPA and 24-hour emergency response. Technical Services will include the implementation and approval of a new planned maintenance system and liaison between Flag State, Class and the yacht.“We are delighted to be handling the technical management of Eclipse and look forward to working with the owner’s representatives and the Captain, officers and crew,” commented Steve Corkhill, Managing Director of AWYM.A key factor with this technical management contract is that AWYM will work in partnership with the yacht’s onboard management team. “Every management contract is different, and in most cases, “top-down” management simply doesn’t work in the yachting industry. Our service to Eclipse will be as flexible as possible and management decisions will be taken in conjunction with the client’s representatives to ensure that the operation of the yacht is never compromised,” added Daniel Taylor, Business Development Manager of AWYM.With the addition of Eclipse, Andrew Weir Yacht Management now provide services to a fleet in excess of 15 large private and charter yachts.By Gemma Fottles

Zaha Hadid’s collaboration to design a new superyacht with the renowned Hamburg-based shipbuilders Blohm+Voss has received remarkable interest from yachting enthusiasts throughout the Asia Pacific.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/147747/image/large-f7ac3cc7f4eec6ab523ba0286f0aa73b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/147747">To celebrate the collaboration, Zaha Hadid and Herbert Aly, CEO and Managing Partner of Blohm+Voss, joined guests from across the region at the SEVVA Club, Hong Kong yesterday evening.Based around the sculptural form of a master prototype conceived for a 128m yacht, The Unique Circle Yachts by Zaha Hadid Architects for Blohm+Voss is a family of five individual 90m yachts that creatively explore the design philosophies of the master prototype within the technical requirements of a fully-engineered yacht design.The overall design is informed by fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems, with hydrodynamic research informing the design of the hull. The exoskeleton structure of the upper section is an interwoven network of supports that vary in thickness and lend a natural aesthetic to the yacht’s external appearance; evoking the organic structural systems found in natural marine formations. This exoskeleton connects the various levels and decks of the ship seamlessly via expressive diagonals. Whereas traditional yacht designs adhere to a strict horizontal order, Hadid has created an intense connectivity between the various decks and elements of the design. The fluid design language of the master prototype has been applied to subsequent variations of the Unique Circle Yachts 90m yacht concepts, creating a coherent design with the highest correlation between the various design options.The 90m JAZZ yacht is the first of the five Unique Circle Yachts that has been technically specified and detailed by the naval architects at Blohm+Voss. Its lineage from the 128m master prototype is evident, with further technical refinements to address the specifications required for ocean crossings.In addition to JAZZ, four further 90m yachts have been designed to fulfil the different requirements and individual requests of their designated owners. Each design will vary in layout according to the owner’s preferences.The design process was very much a collaborative one, with Blohm+Voss and ZHA working together to address the practical challenges of designing a yacht while remaining true to the strong iterative design language of the master prototype. She was built for an experienced owner, Larry Ellison, who now owns the 88 metre Musashi, a simular looking yacht, built at Feadship in 2011. Superyacht Eclipse in NYC

Eclipse, the world's largest yacht, owned by a famous Russian, has arrived in Manhattan. As far as we know, it is the first time the yacht has docked in NYC. She was caught on a webcam when she entered the port two days ago. Not known to many, Eclipse is available for selective charters through SuperYachtsMonaco. For many years, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/207">Prince Abdulaziz</a> (147 metre) ranked as the largest yacht in the world. Today, four yachts are larger; <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/206">Dubai</a> (162 metre), the Blohm &amp; Voss <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12">Eclipse</a> (162,5 metre), <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9">Al Said</a> (155 metre), built by Lürssen and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3962">Topaz</a> (147 metre), also built by Lürssen, pushing Prince Abdulaziz to the fouth place. Prince Abdulaziz is owned by the Saudi royal family, and was build in Denmark in 1984. The German shipyard Blohm+Vos were delighted to announce that superyacht Eclipse and superyacht Palladium won a total of three awards at the 2011 World Superyacht Awards in London. Eclipse, the world's largest yacht in Barbados

The combination of her twin 3442 HP Paxman 12VP185 diesels and her twin 4000 HP Textron Lycoming TF40 gas turbines, provide a top speed of 46 knots. This fast 49.5 metre superyacht features a beautiful interior by Terence Disdale. Sussurro, The fastest Feadship ever launched

MTN and partners provide global vsat to superyacht Eclipse

The world’s largest yacht, the 162.50 metre Eclipse, is nearing completion. Last week she left her dry-dock at the Blohm + Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, for a short sea trial. We can report that the yacht is back at the shipyard again and will conduct final sea trials in May before delivery. World’s largest yacht Eclipse nearing completion

SuperYachtTimes.com readers Paul, Philipp Stohn and Carl Groll have just sent in new photos of Eclipse. More details about the reportedly largest yacht in the world are still scarce, however she is now moored next to the dock at the Blohm &amp; Voss shipyard in Hamburg for final outfitting. Although her hull colour appears to be grey, it’s most likely a protective coat and her final colours will be revealed when completed. This morning the Blohm &amp; Voss shipyard in Hamburg launched the superyacht Eclipse. The luxury yacht is designed by Terence Disdale and will have a gross tonnage of approximately 13,000 and reportedly measures 170 metres, which would make her the world’s largest yacht. Blohm & Voss launches superyacht Eclipse

Wednesday evening the much anticipated 92m Blohm &amp; Voss Mayan Queen IV (project Safari) was launched. The yacht is designed by Tim Heywood for a Mexican owner who previously owned a Feadship. It appears that her hull is painted in two different tones of grey/silver, as we have seen before on the 72m Heywood designed Kogo. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124752/image/large-a7d15349bc16722e2ac89c5145f0b6da.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124752">After the launch of the 123m <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11">A</a> (project Sigma / SF 99) in January, Mayan Queen IV is the second yacht in a new series of contracts for Blohm &amp; Voss, after they had ceased superyacht construction in the early nineties.
