	Italian design studio Luxury Projects is headed by an all round captivating woman. Laura Pomponi, founder and CEO of the Ancona based company, is about as Italian as you can imagine, with a bright, intelligent, good humoured personality and a tangible zest for life that is clearly reflected in the number of well-executed projects Pomponi and her team have successfully completed over the past eight years in business.

	Pomponi grew up in Rome, where the qualities that attract people to her now forced her parents to send her to a monastery as a child in the summer afternoons to learn the art of embroidery and, well, keep her out of trouble. She laughingly tells us, “My parents had to keep me busy so I would behave myself! I was at the monastery every day in the summers to learn the art of complicated embroidery. When I was a teenager the tradition continued, and they sent me off to England to study English in these long summers to stop me from being naughty!”

	A funny anecdote now, Pomponi’s feistiness as a child actually proved to be the key to learning skills that would ultimately be indispensable in later life. The benefits of learning English when involved in an abundance of travel and international business doesn’t need explaining, but the ability to really understand a behind-the-scenes skill of an element of interior design piqued an interest in colour, shapes, art and design that was already simmering beneath the surface for Pomponi.

	Regardless of an artistic flair, Pomponi decided to study technical engineering, something in which she successfully continued in immediately after graduation working for the large Italian tech company, Telecom Italia Mobiles. Explaining the decision to take a decidedly more technical vocation, Pomponi says, “I grew up surrounded by fashion designers - including my grandmother. But I chose to study engineering because I am really passionate about maths and complicated equations. What I actually like about the construction of a yacht is the intricacy of the process. It’s like a DNA spiral, and I love solving these complex issues.”

	Travelling the world with the aforementioned position, Italy eventually beckoned Pomponi back to her shores, where Pomponi’s life would take a different direction with a position at the CRN shipyard. Explaining this drastic transition, she explains “I eventually decided to go back to Ancona. I was missing the sea and I was missing my family! CRN were enlarging their shipyard at that time, and knowing nothing about yachting aside from loving to be on the sea and loving sailing, they asked me if I was ready to start on production and go from there. I accepted the challenge and started with them as a Project Manager in 2002.”

	It was several years later on a trip to Doha when she decided to put the entrepreneurial ambitions she had had since childhood into action - though it was a chance meeting with a Sheikh on this particular trip that propelled these ambitions into reality. Elaborating on the move from Project Manager at CRN to owner of her own design studio, Pomponi says, “I was in Doha with a friend who designs jewels. We were at a gala, and suddenly I was sitting next to a man who was a Sheik. We got talking and he asked me if I was an interior designer. I looked at him and said, ‘Sheik. I’m not but… I can do it.’ From then on we started to work together. He trusted me, and we started on some of his reception areas at his home. Little by little people in yachting started to call me for project management roles within superyacht interiors. An owner then rang me and asked me to do it all - that was the refit of the Mangusta 40 metre, Shane (ex. Ability) in 2008. The rest is history!” 

	Today, Luxury Projects is made up of a strong team of 10, all Italian, and all from various backgrounds and disciplines. Although the residential side of design is still something that is very present within the business, Pomponi’s heart really lies in superyacht design, something reflected in the fact that the business in split 70-30 between the two sectors. The passion for superyachts, Pomponi tells us, is connected with the challenge of the build, “The clients on both sides are very demanding, but the spaces on board yachts are very different to residential. The construction of a yacht does not allow for any mistakes, and every element is very bespoke.”

	Just some of the most exciting projects the Luxury Projects studio has undertaken since their establishment in 2008 include the interior design on board the 43 metre Talal, the 34 metre Koji, the 39 metre Lady Azul, the 66 metre Route 66, the 43 metre Emotion, the 27 metre Rosey (ex. Yolo) and the interior refit on board the 59 metre Feadship superyacht Le Pharaon - no small feat for what is still a relatively new studio. So what makes Luxury Projects different and keeps clients continuously knocking on their door?

	One explanation could be found in the fact that Pomponi and her team have a fresh approach to design, with a strong focus on innovation - particularly when it comes to lighting. This attracts a diverse set of clients to the table, Pomponi says. “My clients are almost all in their 40s, so my age. They have a background in innovation and technology. There are certain clients that use the yacht as a status symbol, but from the majority of owners that I deal with, they really want to enjoy the yacht.”

	With this desire to really enjoy what a superyacht has to offer comes a distinct change within interior design. No longer is extravagant luxury the order of the day, but functionality - something seen within the - still rather secretive - new superyacht concepts (both of 70+ metres) Luxury Projects has undertaken with the team at Amels. Commenting on the projects, Pomponi elaborates, “The idea is to present these concepts to the new generation of yacht owners. The interiors are cosy, it’s not about luxury… these designs are for a client who really wants to use the yacht, and we’ve included state-of-the-art lighting and entertainment technology. The selection of materials we have used is designed for a real indoor-outdoors connection - for example, if they are scuba diving, they can come into the main saloon with a wetsuit - we’ve used outdoor fabric on the sofas.”

	Aside from the exciting concepts presented in Monaco with Amels, current projects underway at the studio include the refit on board the 90 metre Nero, as well as a 42 metre new build motor yacht and the extensive refit of the 32 metre Saint Raphael, which is being lengthened to 42 metres. In regards to the latter two projects, Luxury Projects are also undertaking the exterior design. Although interiors are really the heart and soul of the company, this is something in which has been made possible by Pomponi’s diverse and skillful team.

	The team behind the studio is something Pomponi speaks proudly of. Though she is most definitely the boss, the way Luxury Projects is ran is not a dictatorship, or even a democracy, it’s a family, and Pomponi warmly told us of travelling the world with the close team, cooking up Italian feasts and enjoying each other’s company on the journey of the business. Clients are also commonly invited to join the Luxury Projects family in an informal but richly productive environment. Getting to know your client's personality and tastes are, after all, all part and parcel of delivering their dream superyacht design.

	In terms of the future, Pomponi has dreams to grow the company bigger in order to better facilitate markets such as the US, but by no means desires to be the biggest studio in the world. She wants to maintain the great team she has and, of course, maintain control over the projects they undertake. With the aforementioned Amels concepts well received in Monaco, it seems as though the decision to go bigger or not will most definitely rest in Pomponi’s hands sooner rather than later.

Welcome to the family: A closer look at Luxury Projects with CEO, Laura Pomponi

Marina Port Vell (MPV), Barcelona—set to become one of the world’s most elite superyacht destinations and, with phased marina completions throughout 2014, the pre-eminent home port in the Mediterranean has appointed Captain Anders Pehrson, who joined MPV as Dockmaster yesterday. A vastly qualified Captain with a superb reputation and professional experience that includes some of the world’s most recognizable yachts, Anders Pehrson brings a unique blend of training and qualifications with him to MPV.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146964/image/large-8b1991b3019315cb7c911201a7a21340.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146964">“Anders personal decision to move from ship to shore and to join us in this most visible of positions is a great triumph for Marina Port Vell,” says Norma Trease, Director of Salamanca Group’s Marine Division. “He brings with him direct experience in piloting and managing superyachts for the past 15 years as well as a vital ability to converse in seven languages,” she continues.Captain Pehrson holds an MCA Master (Y) 3000GT license, is a Ship Security Officer (ISPS SSO), is trained in advanced fire fighting and medical first aid, and has far reaching training in leadership and language. Working since the age of 14, he began his nautical career in 1997 as a Chief Officer on passenger vessels. In 1998, he joined Renalo as Chief Officer. Superyachts Emerald Star, Idyllwild and Xanadu for sale through CNI

Some of CNI’s finest yachts will be making their way from their winter cruising destinations to rendezvous at the 20th annual MYBA Charter Show in Genoa, Italy. From 5 – 9 May, Genoa’s seafront will be lined with a stunning showcase of yachts from the CNI fleet including the 69.65m (228.5’) Sherakhan, the new 54.2m (177.8’) Maraya from CRN, the 43m (141.08’) CD Two, the 43.34m (142.19’) Griff, and the 37m (121.3’) Beverly. World-class awards CNI is delighted that the 56m (183’) Selene from Perini Navi has been short-listed as a finalist in the Best Sailing Yacht in the 45m+ category at the World Superyacht Awards. A favourite in the CNI fleet, Selene was built in collaboration with a CNI broker and, following her launch in 2007, she has become a highly popular charter yacht. Selene will be racing in the Perini Navi Cup in Porto Rotondo later this year. CNI is also pleased to report prolific entries for its Young Designer of the Year Award – one of the divisions of the World Superyacht Awards, due to be hosted in April. A highly technical process, each tour allows the viewer to undertake a complete visit of the selected yacht, while being able to take a 360° look around at any time during the visit. It is even possible to navigate the paths taken, as the virtual visitor takes you through the deck plans, and have oneself guided through thanks to the remote control device. All it takes to view them is Adobe Flash Player, and a little time for the tour to load. Miami International Boat Show The Miami International Boat Show, held between the 14 – 18 February at the Miami Beach Convention Center, saw CNI displaying recent listings including the 42.6m (139.7’) Emerald Star from CRN, the 29.6m (97’) Gigi from Hargrave, the 24m (80') Dolce Vita II, and the 24m (80’) Lazzara, Leading Lady. Antibes Yacht Show Starting off the summer season in the Mediterranean, the 2nd annual Antibes Yacht Show, from the 17 – 20 April, sees its capacity almost double, with, to date, 10 yachts from the CNI sales fleet exhibiting, including motor yachts 43.34m (142’) Griff from Marinteknik, the 41.6m (136.5’) Ti Voglio Tanto Bene from ISA, the 34.95m (114.6’) Eliza Jean from Benetti, the 30.5m (100’) Albat from Baglietto, the 28.8m (94.5’) Vanilla from Ferretti, the 25.1m (82’) Sedation from Sunseeker, the 22.8m (74’) Hot Chocolate from Kevlar, and the 22m (72’) Caroama from Overmarine. Sailing yachts from the CNI fleet include the 25.3m (83’) Mr Gecko from Wally Yachts, and the 25m (82’) Volador from Royal Huisman. Charter News Expect to see some new names among existing favourites as the CNI charter division welcomes the funky 28m (92’) Mangusta Number Five to the charter fleet. She is a unique yacht with red crocodile-leather sofas, a Hammam in the master bathroom, and a relaxation room with entertainment facilities. Available for charter in the South of France this summer, Number Five accommodates up to seven guests. Available for the first time for charter is the 30m (98’) Dark Shadow from Wally Yachts. A high performance sailing yacht, she comes with a 13.6m (44.6m) wally tender for those not wishing to partake in the serious sailing to be taken ashore. On the other side of the Atlantic, CNI’s Charter Management Division in Fort Lauderdale has also been busy welcoming several new yachts to the fleet including the 39.6m (130’) Lionshare is also available in the East Mediterranean this summer. Built in 1998, she is fresh from an extensive refit and extension and boasts a stunning interior. New Launches The eagerly awaited Amnesia and Maraya, have now been launched to great acclaim. The 196.8’ (60m) Amnesia is chartering in Croatia and southern Italy for the summer, before heading to the Caribbean for winter. The 2007-built 54m (177.82’) Maraya also joins CNI’s charter division in Monaco. She offers the latest innovations in technology along with an abundance of luxurious interior and exterior spaces. Fresh from the yard, she is set to have a highly successful summer charter season in the Mediterranean. On her cruises there, she may well encounter another new yacht in the CNI fleet, the 37m (121’) Beverly, which is launching this spring. The first Benetti with a black hull, Beverly is set to become the black pearl of the Mediterranean. Further afield The 34.1m (112’) Symphony II from Westport will be cruising Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao this summer, whilst back on this side of the Atlantic the 25.7m (84’) Anne Viking from Princess Yachts will be combining charters in Stavanger, the European Capital of Culture 2008, with the Norwegian fjords this summer. Big Aron is just emerging from a new paint refresh in Australia and, sporting her new look, she will be in Queensland and New South Wales for charters this summer. Carl Linné’s round-the-world tour The 32m (106’) Carl Linné has a hectic and exciting charter itinerary over the coming year. From March the sailing yacht will be in Antigua and available for regular charters or whale-watching charters to Dominica. She is then heading north to the Dominican Republic. From December she will be back to Antigua and the San Blas islands before leaving for Costa Rica and Panama. In July and August of 2009 she is already planning charters in Alaska. Launched in 2000, she underwent a refit in 2006 and is now in as new condition. Georges Bourgoignie, also from CNI Miami, announces that the 24.4m Selene from Nautor Swan is available through CNI. Toby Walker of CNI London represented both the purchaser and seller of Emerald Star (as mentioned in last months news) and brings the yacht to CNI’s charter division for her debut season. Georges Bourgoignie from CNI Miami announces the launch of the 30.5m/100’ <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/179">Rapture</a> from Southern Wind Shipyards, South Africa. She launched from the shipyard for the installation of its rig, sea trials, and fine-tuning to complete the final details before delivery to her new owner later this month. Her launch will be celebrated early December in Cape Town. Arne Ploch from CNI Palma announces the signing of a 45m/147.8’ <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1882">Factoria Naval de Marin</a> due for delivery in May 2009. Following the feeding frenzy of the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, the yacht was sold in style after three offers were submitted on just the second day of the show. Built by Palmer Johnson and designed by Terence Disdale, this world-class luxury yacht has accommodation for ten guests in five elegantly appointed staterooms. CNI’s latest brokerage and charter news 

Cannes, the Croisette, the sea and a brand-new 43 meter yacht ready to make its world debut: the perfect ingredients for an unforgettable celebration. The occasion was the official presentation of the first yacht of the new CRN 43 line, the Emerald Star. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123421/image/large-9324e3cb8ec030c6195c9d3d2be898df.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123421">A select group of roughly 400 guests were on hand last 14 September, at the “Gala sur la mer”, for an exclusive party held by the CRN Shipyard on the beach of Hotel Majestic Barrière di Cannes. Hosting the evening’s festivities, which were organised in collaboration with Toywatch, was the MTV Vj Kris Grove. The party got underway with an aperitif of champagne and sushi, and it continued with words from CRN Chairman Lamberto Tacoli and from Gianni Zuccon. On hand for the event was the entire top management of the Ferretti Group and its various brands, including Chairman Norberto Ferretti and Managing Director Vincenzo Cannatelli. Making the atmosphere even more inviting was the trio Smoma and its high-energy jazz music. But the key figure at the event was <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/540">Emerald Star</a>, docked just a few metres from the beach and, as the party reached its climax, suddenly lit up in all its splendour. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123422/image/large-799df46f8f86ea16298effb3dd999103.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123422">Framed by the dark of night, the majestic silhouette of the <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/540">Emerald Star</a>, kept hidden up to that moment, was flooded with a vibrant lightshow, charming the guests like a truly regal hostess. And in the background, to celebrate the worldwide unveiling of the yacht, a magnificent fireworks display was set off, sending fountains of light and a multicoloured rain to light up the sky above the massive, white, 43 meter hull. It was a proud, stirring moment for those on hand, who had come to Cannes from all over the world. Presenting the awards were Ms. Mara Mavilla, President of Toywatch, and Vasco Buonpensiere, Sales Director of CRN. The shipyard also received a plaque from RINA certifying that the <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/1377">CRN 43</a> represents the largest pleasure craft built from composite materials, in compliance with RINA’s strictest rules of classification for commercial yachts. <noscript></noscript>

Emerald Star unveiled in Cannes

More prestigious than ever, the Cannes International Boat and Yacht Show adorned itself for its 30th anniversary with all its finery to invite its 65.000 visitors (up 19% compared to 2006) to dream and escape. With more than 200 new models on display for the first time ever, Cannes has confirmed its position as Europe’s leading in-water show. Hosting, for the 2nd consecutive year, ever more magnificent boats, Port Pierre Canto met with great success, both among the visitors and the brokers, who represented the majority of the exhibitors. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123221/image/large-2006c5ebff188f8cc1fba2603c08dbc2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123221">An International Exhibition The show welcomed the key players in pleasure boating and luxury yachting from all over the world: Europe, United States, Asia, Middle East &amp; Oceania. The Cannes International Boat and Yacht Show 2007

A grand celebration took place today at the CRN Shipyard, as the Ancona shipyard held a new launching: <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/540">Emerald Star</a>, the first 43-metre hull of a new displacement line made of composite materials, took to the water in the presence of the shipowner and more than 350 shipyard employees, to whom the festive day was dedicated. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122629/image/large-a4086fb37c7ff8eef1e474c86b7c2793.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122629"> It was an extraordinary event for the shipyard and for the entire Ferretti Group, representing the crowning moment of a period in which this new line has also enjoyed great commercial success, already registering the sale of 6 hulls. On hand at the prestigious event were the Chief Executive Officer of the Ferretti Group, Vincenzo Cannatelli, as well as the President of the CRN, Lamberto Tacoli, and the Managing Director of the shipyard, Gennaro Candida De Matteo. “I wish to thank all the staff members who have contributed over the years to the success of this project – emphasised Lamberto Tacoli – and special thanks go to our client and friend, who has grown with us, building increasingly impressive boats”. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122630/image/large-6cf43b6f733f91925f2735872c02329a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122630"> Following the opening remarks by Vincenzo Cannatelli and Gennaro Candida De Matteo, the exquisite ceremony got underway with a blessing from the local parish priest and the traditional breaking of the bottle. At that point, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/540">Emerald Star</a> elegantly entered the water, to the stirring notes of “Con te partirò”, accompanied by the applause of the thrilled onlookers. The exciting launch ceremony was followed by an elegant buffet on the shipyard’s private wharf, meant for all the employees, and especially those engaged in the construction of the vessels. Outfitted with three decks and a bulbous hull, the <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/540">Emerald Star</a> is a mega-yacht with a unique external layout and a skilful arrangement of its internal spaces, designed in collaboration with the technical staff of the CRN and the Zuccon International Project firm. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122631/image/large-3dfe47d9370f752ed157a64c6fdfcaae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122631"> The first vessel made of composite materials to be fully constructed at the Ancona facility, the <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/1377">CRN 43</a> sets itself apart with her major volumes and extensive open-air zones, such as the covered well areas of the main deck and the upper deck, lodged in openings in the majestic white hull. A perfect home for long cruises, the new composite queen can easily hold 10 passengers and 9 crew members, navigating in flawless comfort at a maximum speed of 15.5 knots and a cruising speed of 13 knots. The next big event is in September, at the upcoming Cannes Boat Show, where the <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/540">Emerald Star</a> will make its world debut.
