<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/879" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Humphreys Yacht Design (Company)">Humphreys Yacht Design</a> has unveiled the first details of its 33.81-metre explorer yacht concept FTX110, the flagship of the Fast-Transit Explorer Series, the studio’s latest superyacht project set to span models from 15 to 33-metres.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394475/image/large-b787b7a296337a3d9447a3f792808d8c.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394475">Presented to the public for the first time, the studio describes the FTX110 as a “more refined approach to offshore cruising”, combining fuel efficiency at fast cruising speeds within a compact 180 GT platform. &nbsp;Developed around <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/879" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Humphreys Yacht Design (Company)">Humphreys Yacht Design</a>’s expertise in hull optimisation and offshore yacht design, the concept is engineered for efficient fast cruising across a broad operating envelope. According to the studio, the hull form and propulsion package have been carefully balanced to deliver a combination of “performance, seakeeping capability, comfort, and fast, long-range cruising efficiency.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394472/image/large-cd8b40eb25897b106bf13d25252f588d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394472">Powered by triple <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> IPS 2700 engines integrated with an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4531" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maritime Organization (Company)">IMO</a> Tier III-compliant SCR system, the yacht is expected to achieve a top speed of 40 knots while maintaining cruising speeds between 20 and 30 knots. At 20 knots, the yacht offers a projected range of approximately 1,000 nautical miles, extending to more than 2,000 nautical miles at a slower speed of 12 knots.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394470/image/large-7a56b7432a6ef03071f7787f2be66747.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394470">“This concept evolved out of a design commission we received from a client who was originally interested in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ermis237.8m (124'0&quot;)McMullen & Wing Ltd2007">Ermis²</a> – our 38m high-performance carbon superyacht that achieves a 58-knot top speed,” explained Tom Humphreys, Co-Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/879" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Humphreys Yacht Design (Company)">Humphreys Yacht Design</a>. “The FTX110 builds on this deep-V planing hull platform, but is powered for a slightly more modest top speed with efficient fuel consumption in the 20-30 knot range the priority.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394474/image/large-68e37cb211ea95235a4df9ba802519e4.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394474">Exterior-wise, the FTX110 presents low-slung proportions, expansive glazing and broad deck spaces reinforcing her offshore cruising profile.On deck, key features include a spacious low-level aft deck directly leading to the sea while also serving as launch and storage areas for tenders, diving equipment and water toys. Rob Humphreys and Richard Hadida are two gentlemen from completely different walks of life, but they both share an incredible passion for the British sailing yacht brand, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster Yachts.</a> For nearly 24 years, Rob Humphreys has helped perfect the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> brand through his articulate design work and naval architecture expertise.As an<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">&nbsp;Oyster</a> yacht enthusiast, Richard Hadida was familiar with Rob’s creations, and when he heard the news that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster&nbsp;</a>was in administration last year he made the quick move to help out and became the company owner and CEO. It is evident that business is booming for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a>, who pride themselves on having created an ‘Oyster family’ of owners and sailing enthusiasts. With Rob and Richard an instrumental part of that family, it was high time SuperYacht Times sat down with the two of them to talk past, present and future. &nbsp; &nbsp;Rob Humphreys, Founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/879" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Humphreys Yacht Design (Company)">Humphreys Yacht Design&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/63833/image/large-69e2ca6c378e739e368f2a130bf6d46b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/63833">Rob Humphreys (right)Do you find anything challenging about designing?&nbsp; Yeah, it’s a bitch of a job! But when it’s not you feel very lucky to be doing something you really love doing. It’s still a job with deadlines and hard work, but you are making people’s passions come alive, so it’s a very privileged thing to be doing. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/63834/image/large-188254d2d764a37424bf9a9feac924eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/63834"> Do you think there’s an added skillset that comes with sailing that people want?&nbsp;At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> recently - we had some powerboat owners converting to an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a>. You know, the luxury level is arguably superior. It comes with more interest really, more awareness of the fuel burn and responsibilities. The range you have with a sailboat is infinite, whereas even super long range powerboats are still limited and you still have to plan where you are going to get fuel from. With sailing boats - the world is literally your oyster. &nbsp;We did a fleet of Global Challenge Boats and the statistic was that the fleet did an aggregate of one million sea miles and 300,000 of those miles were in the Southern Ocean going the wrong way! That is pretty much without a drop of fuel, just powered by the generators. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/73224/image/large-7237bdc07fe89e245db4b6a60d968f56.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/73224">What is it that you think is so special about having a good working relationship and having various collaborations in the industry?&nbsp;It’s an advantage I think. It works when there’s never a presumption or an obligation, and there is an understanding of one another and the brand. The brand is important, and it is important to keep building the identity. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/67885/image/large-a689c87d78ec1cfa051951e98e340886.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/67885">What is it like working on a custom project?&nbsp;When working on a custom project you’re dealing very specifically with an owner’s private dream, and you try to fulfil that. But with an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a>, for example, it’s a more generic profile that has the blue water sailing capabilities. There are a lot of people that have created the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> family with very similar requirements such as safety, comfort, luxury, reliability and style. But things can change on an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> if you want to request easy access to the water, for example. &nbsp;When project managers are drawing up a contract and they are told to build it to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> standards - that says it all really. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/10290/image/large-5c5593b9608c7312cb15f00ff3199769.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/10290"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ermis237.8m (124'0&quot;)McMullen & Wing Ltd2007">Ermis2</a>&nbsp;was a full-custom project. What was the brief for that, and what did you learn?&nbsp;Sea-keeping, sea-kindliness were the most important drivers. So we ended up with a 37.8-metre, 55 knot boat and one of the fastest superyachts with a gas turbine engine. The owner is somebody who is time-poor, a very busy man who wanted to go places fast and that was the reason for the speed. But she was built with efficiency in mind rather than top speed, so even with big motors and jets it was a case of even at half throttle, she’s simply more fuel efficient than the equivalent size in a normal production <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess&nbsp;</a>or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>, for example. &nbsp;I learnt a lot about the powerboat sector! Our experience designing racing sailboats helped because we knew the nuances of hull-shape, sea-kindliness and things. So it made <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ermis237.8m (124'0&quot;)McMullen & Wing Ltd2007">Ermis2&nbsp;</a>even more interesting. &nbsp; Do you think there’s room in the market for new brands coming forward?&nbsp;Yes! New brands come in and old brands mustn't be complacent. After a time brands can still move forward and still maintain the same ownership profile, even if demographically it is getting younger. You can’t sit back and say “this boat’s absolutely fine” and never learn to change it because is everything is moving forward! &nbsp; &nbsp; Richard Hadida, CEO of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster Yachts &nbsp;</a><img src="/uploads/store/photo/35451/image/large-e73d633f7b7f9807d7d6aefe3381eccd.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35451">What’s your opinion on a good working relationship and a good collaboration?&nbsp;&nbsp;I think it’s when everyone who’s at the party adds to the party. The Oyster 675 and all of the range has been designed by Rob Humphreys and so there is consistency and beauty which makes the Oyster yacht iconic. It clearly has the Oyster DNA in every part of the boat, and that’s thanks to of years of working with Rob. Oyster is about being a timeless classic and Rob understands that. &nbsp; The market for sailing yachts has been under pressure, but it seems that it is slowly gaining traction again. What is your view on this?&nbsp;The sailing market is five per cent of the motor market and without a doubt, the market shares are increasing. Why is that happening? Maybe it’s because people want more adventure in their world and they understand that sailing offers them that adventure! I think that the other reason is that as young people come through, they have been more educated on the environment. This form of transport is five thousand years old and is the most natural form of transport on the planet. You put nothing back into the environment when you sail. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/59004/image/large-e6b2f6c4e9f3cde7174a7d1063350a19.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/59004">Do you think there is a typical Oyster owner? &nbsp;We had a new customer recently who is 40 years old, and so is his wife. His kids are seven and eight years old and they are going to buy an Oyster to go around the world for two years with their kids and put a teacher on board. But, we are getting more interest from younger people so I think that, as you’d expect with the evolution of any brand, we are concentrating on reaching out to younger people, which is very exciting. &nbsp;Has manufacturing back in the UK been a success?It started just under a year ago and we’ve done a hell of a lot. We’ve really got the business back in ship shape and now it’s more about driving the sales, furthering the brand, getting the message to the world that we're back in business and that we happen to have the best yachts in the world, which is a lot of fun. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/5680/image/large-f752e2e5878da065dbcf637bd202f046.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/5680"> Do you have a five-year plan? Where do you see the brand in five years?I am delighted with the new board and in five years we’ll be flying! The turnaround takes two years and so that’s a lot of investment going over those two years and I knew that when I bought the business and so we are absolutely ahead of target. &nbsp;Is&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a>&nbsp;working on anything new at the moment?&nbsp;&nbsp;Yes, we’ve got the 565 and 595 which are brand new boats designed for sailors and absolutely state of the art in every respect. The ethos and the DNA of the brand are in every corner. We’ve also got the 1125 which is a big crew boat coming out in March - it is the superyacht of superyachts. Rob and I have been working on a 4XX project for the last nine or 10 days, so that’s progressing very nicely, but it’s still top secret so we can’t talk. It is the Oyster 885 which is entry level superyacht series, and she does everything that any superyacht could do but better. She’s perfect. My close friend and former motorsports boss, Eddie Jordan, has done nearly 10 transatlantic navigations and I've just sent her back to Southampton for a refit. Peter Thompson and Michael White of Ocean Independence and Michael Skoulikidis of Atalanta Marine have jointly listed the superfast Ermis2 for sale with an asking price of € 16,000,000 (EU VAT Paid). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133059/image/large-4574ab78f24fcf44252cef698a60372b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133059">The 37.60 metre <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1296">Ermis2</a> was built in 2008 in New Zealand by the McMullen &amp; Wing shipyard to a design of Humphreys Yacht Design. The resulting interior is reminiscent of a Caribbean beach house; light and bright, and is intended for relaxation with family and friends. McMullen & Wing’s Ermis2 for sale through Ocean Independence and Atalanta Marine

Ermis2, the 37-metre high performance motor yacht from Humphreys Yacht Design, has been voted “Best Power Yacht, 24-40 metres” at the 2008 International Superyacht Society Design and Leadership Awards in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126330/image/large-c9aae2b4b3c41db971fc8d740ed8c7f1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126330">Described by the ISS as “one of the most unusual commissions to be seen in many years”, Ermis2 launched in late 2007 is a 37 metre infused carbon-fibre superyacht that can travel at speeds in excess of 55 knots. She has consistently impressed the superyachting community with her power, sea-keeping abilities and comfortable yet minimalist interior. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126331/image/large-c09bccf1b5dab4274d5c896f688de3d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126331">Finalists for the five award categories are nominated through the year by members of the ISS and peers within the industry, with each category winner being selected by a judging panel. Humphreys Yacht Design, responsible for the naval architecture, exterior styling and interior design of Ermis2 are delighted with the ISS award which truly recognises the best-of-the-best in each design category. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126332/image/large-431c403fa701f05701c846af057a2cb4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126332">This latest award for Ermis2 follows other successes, having won the Innovation category at both the World Yacht Awards and the ShowBoats Awards earlier this year.

Ermis2 wins superyacht design award

One of the most technically‐sophisticated superyachts ever launched has just completed sea‐trials and is now being shipped to the Mediterranean. The creation of this groundbreaking vessel was entrusted to three leading names in the area of high‐performance yachting; designers and naval architects Humphreys Yacht Design, builders McMullen &amp; Wing and composite engineers High Modulus. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124229/image/large-a5dbb9ba6374e848f605c803feb9f973.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124229">Ermis2’s apparently simple design brief of ‘safety, seakindliness, speed and comfort’ understates the fact that the owner was looking for a superyacht capable of speeds normally reserved for the powerboat racing circuit; the capacity to be driven hard in the kind of weather conditions that see most other owners remaining snugly in port, and yet with all the comfort needed to entertain family and friends. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124230/image/large-11986a5773a671dae03932fa7c42ca20.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124230">In an Owner‐driven quest to minimize the weight of the yacht without sacrificing strength and toughness the three parties pursued an aggressive weight audit of all aspects of the vessel, a detailed programme that would be more familiar to a round‐the‐world racing campaign than the average motor yacht design commission. In construction terms the boat was highly advanced – to use High Modulus’ words, "a boat that truly represents the current state of the art … one of the highest technology luxury motor yachts ever built". After detailed investigation of the construction options McMullen and Wing were tasked to build the boat in advanced carbon composites, and they rose to the spirit of the challenge by electing to build a one‐off female mould for the hull to allow for efficient vacuum‐infusion, a process which ensures excellent laminate consolidation. A significant amount of analysis, test‐panel manufacture and destructive testing was carried out to optimise the structure, and a particularly significant decision was to go with a sandwich bottom shell panel rather than a solid carbon panel – not only a lighter choice but as it turned out a tougher one as well, giving the boat significantly more resilience. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124231/image/large-bf3a7ec2a786245c8caef634fc02cf6e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124231">In their extensive tank testing and R&amp;D work, the Humphreys office felt that the commercial standard vertical acceleration of 1g was not adequate to define this particular vessel and its usage, and through wave‐testing analysis they established a design threshold of 2.2g which Humphreys instructed Germanischer Lloyd to use as their plan‐approval benchmark. So the term ‘light but strong’ gained an added, self‐imposed poignancy, amplifying the challenge posed to the composite engineers and the builder. Given this, the achieved lightship displacement of less than 100 tonnes represents a huge success and the general approach has been spectacularly vindicated in recent trials, with initial speeds in the 55+ knot range being achieved and promise of further increase given more optimisation time. However, even despite this performance, Ermis2 has proved to be extremely comfortable and surprisingly quiet even at speed and the systems are configured to allow the boat to remain absolutely silent through the night, free of generator hum. In general style Ermis2 is intended to have the feel of a functional, working yacht rather than a glitzy showstopper, one that belongs at sea rather than in a boutique marina. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124232/image/large-d30218c63c9690329b10a2db1bcfda40.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124232">Humphreys worked to develop an external style that sat well with the utilitarian aspects of the brief – with form essentially following function ‐ and knowing that the boat was capable of exceptionally high speeds was enough without making the inference of speed a flamboyant style statement as well. This understated philosophy was carried through to the interior design, with Jo Humphreys working closely with the Owner and his family to come up with a really comfortable, light and bright interior, with carefully crafted white‐painted timber panelling emphasizing the natural light and creating an easy backdrop to the more vibrant colours of the fabrics and furnishings. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124233/image/large-f119b62e91e6d9d5631fec2af6ae2120.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124233">Despite some very ambitious intentions <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1296">Ermis2</a> has delivered, and the Owner’s observation on completion of his acceptance trials was a measured, ‘All our objectives have been exceeded’. Ermis2 has been nominated in two categories for the World Superyacht Awards, and has a further nomination in the 2008 Showboats Award for Best Semi‐Displacement Yacht under 40 Metres.

Ermis2 prepares for European debut

On Saturday September 29 McMullen &amp; Wing launched the 37 meter Ermis2. Currently Ermis2 is undergoing sea-trials and delivery is scheduled at the end of November. The high-speed carbon composite motoryacht is built for a Greek owner and is supposed to have a top speed of 60 knots. She is powered by three 3650 HP MTU 16V 4000 M90 engines. McMullen & Wing launches Ermis2

At first glance this 37-metre motoryacht has an almost utilitarian appearance, but this deliberate act of understatement – a specific requirement of the owner – hides a highly technical vessel that is the result of an extended development program and many hours of tank testing. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123278/image/large-5b54a60171538a806a80de4692b7eb24.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123278">Due to be completed in autumn 2007 the hull and superstructure are built entirely of lightweight vacuuminfused carbon composites. Powered by three MTU 16v 4000 M90 series engines and Rolls Royce Kamewa jet drives she is the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123279/image/large-659a1f01b6c217d547bce4871579ceb4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123279">Innovations concealed within the hull include a forward water ballast tank together with a fast transfer fuel system that enables the centre of gravity to be adjusted according to the speed at which the yacht is required to travel. A raceboat-like high speed mode requires an aft centre of gravity, inducing a longitudinal trim that is not as conducive to slow speed and longrange capabilities. But being able to optimise the trim on <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1296">Ermis2</a> achieves the best combinations of performance and range. Despite her size <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1296">Ermis2</a> will draw just 1.4 metres, and her carbon construction gives her a displacement of only 98 tonnes in high-speed mode. <noscript></noscript>
