Superyacht designer Umberto Fossati hails from the vibrant northern Italian city of Turin. In this former royal capital of Italy, firmly rooted past traditions blend with the dynamism of industry, creating a unique cosmopolitan metropolis. Spending most of his spare time in the antique and interior design family business located in this same city, the young Fossati soon developed a taste for fine arts and antique furniture which would inform his future career, with a particular interest in pieces which have a history to tell.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/83299/image/large-149b2692574dd2b1eba42c3389411f0a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83299">After sharpening his eye for detail through his architectural and interior design studies at the universities of Turin and Milan respectively, Fossati cut his teeth designing luxury interiors for Italian studios before working at two yacht builders in Viareggio to complete his education.&nbsp;Following his shipyard experiences, Fossati decided to start his own firm, beginning with a superyacht interior design project developed directly for the owner of the 55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Picchiotti (Company)">Picchiotti.</a> Since then, Fossati has developed an impressive design portfolio, including the 39.67-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/284" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CBI Navi (Company)">CBI Navi</a>-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5931" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella di Mare39.67m (130'2&quot;)CBI Navi2018">Stella di Mare&nbsp;</a>which was delivered last summer. Catching a breath at this year’s Versilia Yachting Rendezvous, SYT finds out what’s next for this distinctively Italian designer. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/83300/image/large-aaf393da9a78dc9cc7cf5e43dc006993.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83300"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/80774/image/large-7e15f4c2e230fa83b6106e1e7161f14f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80774">First off, talk me through the inspiration behind the interior design of the&nbsp;Maiora 30m&nbsp;which is <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/first-look-at-maiora-30-yacht">under construction</a> and will be delivered this summer.&nbsp;As with all of our projects, we always start from a blank piece of paper and an empty mind. Our immediate focus is on the person who will have to spend his time on board, understanding how he lives, what his habits are, how he dresses and so on.&nbsp;After the first meeting with the owner, we immediately asked him for some images that would represent him: not of yachts, but pictures of his house and so on and created a mood board from this. We finalised the windows in collaboration with the shipyard and created the interior architecture which was a re-interpretation of 1970s period style. The interior design is full of details that, at the first view, do not take up too much attention, with a colour connection between them: lacquered wood, leather, oak wood - always with the same nuance and using thin and elegant brass inlays.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/80773/image/large-9fa68e0c98dbfddb54ea0d9d176f1979.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80773"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/80772/image/large-d85199cee96277c02ba454d1551f6ae1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80772">The client has an international background which helped us to motivate him towards a more contemporary and fresh style, never losing the elegance, but losing the feeling of heaviness which can be present in some designs. As an example, the only glossy finishing we have on board is found on the lateral ceilings in all of the areas close to the windows with reflections coming in from the exterior scenery.&nbsp; <img src="/uploads/store/photo/81622/image/large-9f15b4029c5585b0f94485b63cbdf38d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/81622"> What was your relationship with the owner like on this project? We met for the first time during the last <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/13" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2018">Monaco Yacht Show&nbsp;</a>on board <a href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/news#managed-by-system">Stella di Mare&nbsp;</a>(our most recently-delivered interior project built by <a href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/news#managed-by-system">CBI Navi)</a> and talked about his vision for this project. We immediately feel comfortable with each other and it was his first boat that he ordered. We do not meet many times during the project development or construction due to his busy schedule working all around around the world, but we were always in touch by phone or email and easily understood each other even when issues arose. Our way of working has definitely flowed well.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/80767/image/large-03d3deff397078c493c2fa38d980cb3a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80767">What are some of the trends you have noticed in superyacht design?&nbsp;The superyacht design world is full of trends and these always change much more slowly than in the automotive or residential building world (with which we are also fully involved as a studio). Yacht concepts and designs often follow the trends of car design for the exteriors and residential trends for the furniture and interiors.&nbsp;One trend is to take out as much natural wood as possible from the onboard bulkhead covering, opting for leather, 3D coverings and so on. The thought behind it is to create not a yacht interior but something as close as possible to a villa or apartment. Nowadays, in general, the owners are younger, more international and confident about living all around the world. The knowledge they have about the yacht design world is deeper than in past years. It is not enough to give them something showy. They are looking for something easier and lighter, with less maintenance and that can be enjoyed in a short time with less preparation and difficulties. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/80769/image/large-85a97ee3c34c956b1dcb9f1c1fbb328a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80769">In addition, there is definitely a loss of formalism which is resulting in the onboard spaces changing. Superyacht interiors are no longer closed off or separated from the exterior spaces in order to achieve privacy but are fully transparent, making it possible to connect all of the interior and exterior spaces. Today it is a must to have full windows, an extendible balcony and so on. We have already seen some superyacht projects with these concepts: transparent bulkheads, open galley to the dining or saloons, the wheelhouse opened to the foyer and so on.Connectivity and continuity of view are some of the top priorities now. In the interior division, owners do not want to have double areas which have the same principal uses as this is lost space. In the residential world, bathrooms and galleys used to be areas which you would hide, but now, as in yachting, these are areas which are shown to guests with pride.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/80768/image/large-4104e54b22b2a7e45f61356af3575896.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80768"> What has been the most memorable project you have worked on and why? One project where we definitely didn’t follow fashion in the design was<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">&nbsp;Galileo G&nbsp;</a>(built by <a href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/news#managed-by-system">Picchiotti</a>/<a href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/news#managed-by-system">Perini Nav</a>i) where we were involved directly by the owner, Silvio Scaglia. He comes from a sailing yacht background and he asked us to develop a ‘gentleman’s yacht’ interior to be both aesthetically and functionally comfortable during his plan to <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/the-road-less-travelled-galileo-g" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">cross the world by sea.</a> The amazing exterior design is by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/53" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Philippe Briand Ltd. (Company)">Philippe Briand</a> and follows the same elegance that the client wanted for his interior.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/77656/image/large-4a5908c35ef2306b186aef379fde4d1d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77656">We developed the interior with mahogany using semi-matte finishing, an all-around bulkhead, and gave a contemporary touch to the ceiling which was striped in slats. The foundation of the project was based on the past experiences of the sea which clients had enjoyed before and that we wanted to bring on board. It was less a design project, but more like a coordinated effort, taking into account his itinerary, from which the interior design styling began.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/77653/image/large-cb34e8c15d97c0c3a0628e3874b90531.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77653"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/77650/image/large-cf084e40d35ba991f889d964aa849bd5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77650">Name some of your favourite materials to work with as an interior designer&nbsp; We love to use natural materials which are characterised by imperfection. It is this which makes them alive. We always start from these materials and then we develop the concept through inlays and details. For example, we love using stones instead of marble exactly for that reason because they are cut and cleaned but and not polished.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/50728/image/large-c93522720e39a694ae203226574b4cf4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50728">The finishing we opt for in general is matte or semi-matte, leaving some glossy touches to enlighten some details or inlays, but in general, we always connect materials and finishing together with gradient scale for a soft effect and avoid any dramatic effects. A clear example of this strategy is our project&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5931" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella di Mare39.67m (130'2&quot;)CBI Navi2018">Stella di Mare&nbsp;</a>that has absolutely nothing shiny or glossy on board. It is this natural and smooth effect that makes it so inviting to get on board. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/50767/image/large-d265487ee3183100d0d186d77548cfe5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50767"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/50797/image/large-9e4c11b091e136165b06607bbc86d628.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50797">What does 'luxury' mean in superyacht design?Today the meaning of luxury has changed. Years ago, it was all about materials and branding. We can see now that the name is not enough and materials are no longer the basis behind luxury. Today clients are looking for the real “tailor-made” finish, the real “bespoke” which is seen as a unique piece with no possibility to be replicated. Clients prefer the certainty of quality than the name of the brand.&nbsp;Custom products also give the possibility to personalize everything, from materials, finishing, design but also on space management. Space and time offer a great portion of the meaning of luxury today. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/50771/image/large-47bda705fc6f7896eec666e618b2fd51.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50771"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/80781/image/large-f30e4c362e4e554e78c099a59124e362.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80781">How do you balance this luxury with environmental awareness?It is an issue for all of those who are involved in the residential world. We already know that about 70% of the materials we use are eco-friendly, being natural materials and not synthetic but is difficult to obtain a full result for the background work we have in our varnishing and painting and so on. We have been able to convince clients to also use natural finishings, but it is not always easy for us to match all of our projects to these materials. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/83436/image/large-1124be7c3007a46b260d2098b21a759d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83436"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/83431/image/large-f749696be4bd3c4e113bf8334b728d17.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83431">What else do you have on your drawing boards?&nbsp;We have developed the interiors of the 35-metre model <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">Maiora</a> 34 Exuma which is under construction, together with the<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">&nbsp;Maiora&nbsp;</a>Style Centre, and we are currently developing a 23-metre with the shipyard. “Everybody loves our sailing yachts”, said Luca Boldrini, Motor Yacht Sales Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a>. The expansion of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> - a globally recognised brand and yacht builder known for their distinctive sailing yachts - to include a range of motor yachts: the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> Argonaut range, has been in the making for a number of years. “It’s an evolution,” Boldrini explained, “and we were never going to release it until it was exactly as we envisioned it.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/73541/image/large-b6616403cffadef8e7f1043b3df6016a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/73541">The new flagship superyacht concept - the 93-metre Argonaut - <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/introducing-argonaut-perini-navi-s-new-92m-flagship-model" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">introduced last summer</a> is accompanied by an 83-metre, 73-metre, 63-metre and 53-metre version. In 2016 we were at the Monaco Yacht Show, we were exhibiting <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4315" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Badis I70.0m (229'8&quot;)Perini Navi2016">Badis</a> (previously Sybaris). Franco Romani (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> Style and Design Director) and I, were in the Yacht Club having lunch watching <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4315" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Badis I70.0m (229'8&quot;)Perini Navi2016">Badis</a> enter the marina and it was amazing to see everyone's reaction. It was that moment we said, “What if we take the style of our sailing yacht and place it on top of the hull of a motor yacht harmonised with the same areas and spaces of a traditional motor yacht.”&nbsp;So that was it! <img src="/uploads/store/photo/73542/image/large-bfce7089e9c9133b8daa9ac317e83944.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/73542">In terms of market research, we looked into the requirements of a small selection of passionate clients who are in love with the look and feel of sailing yachts and wish to execute ‘blue water style’ of cruising. Furthermore, among these selected clients, many of them love the distinctive and elegant look of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a>. So we began looking into creating something that was not a tall building and had our classic model lines that many clients like and consider iconic. We looked very carefully at what was essential to include in the yacht’s content and layout as we were keen to propose the right balance between a traditional motor yacht and our new line. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/73513/image/large-faedebde7a35a826ec9da0c5efb86931.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/73513">How have things developed since the range of Vitruvius yachts with Philippe Briand transpired, who has also evolved his designs into motor yachts?&nbsp;The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> Voyager line was the very first example of cross-fertilisation between a sail yacht and a motor yacht and was developed in partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1405" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vitruvius Ltd (Company)">Vitruvius</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/53" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Philippe Briand Ltd. (Company)">Philippe Briand</a>. The three vessels delivered up to date were the very first specimen of this product. After completing her first stage of construction at Perini Navi’s shipyard in Turkey, the Italian brand transported its latest motor yacht project across the Mediterranean Sea to reach the Italian seaside city of La Spezia where construction will continue until 2020 when the vessel will be ready for delivery.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/58134/image/large-991b4f99d1d0230c88cd40177c2a588d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/58134"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/34410/image/large-ea954fdd43a4f1b9aacec5d5836d4d21.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34410">Sold to her Asian owner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/47785" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="56m Perini Navi motor yacht sold (2017-10-26 11:30:00 +0200)">last year</a>, the 56-metre Voyager is once again the collaboration between Perini and designer Philippe Briand and his Vitruvius brand of explorer-ready yachts. After sailing twice around the world and completing a transit of the notorious Northwest Passage, 55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> is for sale. SuperYacht Times caught up with her European owner, Silvio Scaglia, during the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi Cup - 2018">Perini Navi Cup</a> to talk about his adventures aboard the Vitruvius explorer yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57329/image/large-5916aa11bc688f004be2ca71aabb7a64.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57329">When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> was launched in 2011, she represented a new kind of vessel. The second <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> motor yacht to hit the water after 50-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1939" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Exuma49.5m (162'5&quot;)Perini Navi2010">Exuma</a>, her graceful profile by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/53" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Philippe Briand Ltd. (Company)">Philippe Briand</a> disguised the fact that she was designed and built with a very specific purpose in mind: to navigate the Northwest Passage joining the Atlantic and Pacific through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.&nbsp;“The romance of the Far North had always fascinated me and we started planning the trip while we were building the boat,” says Silvio Scaglia over a breakfast of oven-fresh pastries on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a>’s aft deck. “It was literally in my contract with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a>&nbsp;that the yacht should be suitable for transiting the Northwest Passage safely and comfortably.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57327/image/large-5df9091579c3908055b4d674a9f0557d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57327">Scaglia brought his own experience to the project. He had already circumnavigated the globe aboard his previous boat, the 43-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1521" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Koo42.9m (140'9&quot;)Vitters Shipyard2002">Vent d’Est</a> (launched in 2002 by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/34" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vitters Shipyard (Company)">Vitters</a> as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1521" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Koo42.9m (140'9&quot;)Vitters Shipyard2002">Red Dragon</a>). Although a sailor at heart and a qualified sailing instructor, he was aware that a motor yacht would be better suited to long-distance passage-making in high latitudes.“After <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1521" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Koo42.9m (140'9&quot;)Vitters Shipyard2002">Vent d’Est</a>, I realised that a motor yacht would provide the extra space for bigger tenders and more diving equipment,” he says. “But I didn’t want a typical ‘white boat’: it had to be a seaworthy explorer with a low centre of gravity, not too much windage, and have the elegance of a sailing yacht.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/367" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rosehearty56.0m (183'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Perini Navi</a>&nbsp;showed me&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1939" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Exuma49.5m (162'5&quot;)Perini Navi2010">Exuma</a>&nbsp;and, coming from a sailing background, I loved the idea of building with them.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57326/image/large-782315471b60ab11ac4fa94241127641.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57326">Scaglia’s first impression of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1939" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Exuma49.5m (162'5&quot;)Perini Navi2010">Exuma</a>, however, was that the all-aluminium yacht wasn’t rugged or big enough for his purposes. So <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a>, rated at 725 gross tons, offers around 50% more volume and her hull is built of steel to Ice Class criteria with extra-thick plating. Other features that reflect her explorer vocation include the massive SeaTel satellite dome for navigating up to and beyond 70° North and South, a FarSounder sonar mounted in the bow, ice knives on the rudders, a powerful Naiad bow thruster for added manoeuvrability, super-tough Nibral propellers, a wave breaker on the foredeck, and heated deck gear to prevent them freezing up. Considering all these specialist features, it is somewhat surprising that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> looks as elegant as she does and not more like an expedition vessel from the pages of National Geographic.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57320/image/large-3097ae712e82dd7b36834db039dc63df.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57320">But one of the most appealing aspects for the sailor inside Scaglia is her so-called Briand Optimised Stretched (BOS®) Hull. With its long waterline, narrow entry and slimmed-down beam to maximise hydrodynamic efficiency, to all intents and purposes it’s a sailing yacht hull with stabilisers. “The slippery hull combined with our large fuel tanks means we have an effective range of 9,000 nautical miles at cruising speed – an important consideration in remote locations where bunkering is hard to come by and the quality of the fuel may be suspect. We also have plenty of cold storage, so we can spend over a month at sea without re-provisioning.” &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57321/image/large-32b4e3170e98da543a2892cd327fa874.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57321">Redundancy was another important feature and the yacht is designed so she can run on one engine in get-home mode, or to reduce fuel consumption still further. The trailing propeller still turns the other drive shaft, which on a conventional motor yacht can cook the uncooled gearbox when its engine is switched off. On <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> the cooling systems are connected and can be diverted from one drive unit to the other by simply opening a valve. &nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57318/image/large-744270c7a8c04dac20219d7c42582a3e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57318">Following her launch and debut at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean and transited the Panama Canal before heading out into the Pacific to the remote Cocos Islands, one of the best dive sites in the world thanks to nutrient-rich currents that attract large schools of Hammerhead sharks and other pelagic life. It was here that Scaglia, an experienced scuba diver, had a nerve-wracking moment:&nbsp;“We were diving with a large group of Galapagos sharks that are not usually aggressive,”&nbsp;he recalls.&nbsp;“But the small fish they were feeding on were using us as cover and the sharks were obviously excited. It was a rare occasion when I’ve felt distinctly uncomfortable with sharks around.”&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57325/image/large-9088f1056711081f5b29d03c0e1b59a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57325">The original plan was to attempt an easterly transit of the Northwest Passage in the summer of 2012 and after a stopover in San Diego for maintenance work, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> travelled as far north as Vancouver before the crossing had to be postponed due to logistical setbacks. Nearly four years of world cruising passed before she was ready to tackle the Passage again, this time in the opposite direction. In mid-July 2016, her owner flew to Greenland and joined his waiting yacht in the 100-mile long Kangerluarsuk Fjord. As chance would have it, they met up with another <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini</a>, 56-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/367" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rosehearty56.0m (183'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Rosehearty</a>, in the same fjord as the sailing yacht was setting off on its own Northwest Passage expedition.After bunkering, provisioning and filling up the freezers with abundant Arctic Cod, they set a westerly course amidst a procession of icebergs for Baffin Island, the traditional jumping off point for the Northwest Passage. Joining the crew was also an ice pilot, and a naturalist from EYOS Expeditions to help spot the Arctic wildlife from whales and walruses to polar bears, caribou and musk ox.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57322/image/large-06c552e8e31452e3205a4c133632326a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57322">There are several sea routes across the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G&nbsp;</a>opted for the first one opened up by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen between 1903-06. This took the yacht around the bottom of King William Island, where two ships in a British expedition led by Sir John Franklin became trapped in the ice and were lost in 1846. The episode remained a maritime mystery for 150 years, spurring multiple expeditions and investigations to discover how the ships and their crews came to grief.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57324/image/large-d6d5d50f523e482d8e16e1047149f7d4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57324">It was not until 2014 that the wreck of one of the ships, HMS Erebus, was finally found using side-scanner technology. Galileo G carries the same sonar system that creates a detailed image of the seabed and the yacht engaged in a little (unsuccessful) wreck hunting of its own in the waters off King William Island. Franklin’s second ship, HMS Terror, was identified shortly after <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> had passed through the region.“I find wrecks fascinating because there’s a whole story behind them and diving them is a good excuse to learn a little bit of history,”&nbsp;says Scaglia as we leaf through photographic books he has produced of the far-flung destinations visited aboard both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1521" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Koo42.9m (140'9&quot;)Vitters Shipyard2002">Vent d’Est</a>. He stops at an image of the American ocean liner SS President Coolidge that was sunk in 1941 by wartime mines off the island of Espiritu Santo, part of present-day Vanuatu. Other wreck sites he has dived range from the ancient remains of a Roman galley in Cephalonia to Chuuk Lagoon in the middle of the Pacific, which is littered with Japanese warships destroyed by an American bombing raid during the Second World War.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57317/image/large-0a9adb6556bee0161876d3e8db7dff87.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57317">When the itinerary coincided with their studies or holidays, the owner was sometimes joined by his children on these trips. But the month-long transit of the Northwest Passage was too long and too remote for them to accompany him. Even with the melting ice brought on by climate change in recent years, there was also an element of risk involved. Although he jokes that the biggest challenge was keeping the internet working, Captain Tom Buddle was well aware of the potential hazards:“The navigation without today’s technology would have been tricky,” he admits. “In white-out conditions, you’re always wondering at the back of your mind whether to stop or push on. The radar picks up the big bergs, but the growlers [small icebergs that float with less than one metre showing above the water] are hard to spot even with the FarSounder. Of course, it was reassuring to have the ice pilot on board, but we also had complete confidence in the boat.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57319/image/large-98164117cbb9b31c7fa862ba94023763.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57319">By the first week of September 2016, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a>&nbsp;had reached Prince Albert Sound and was approaching the end of her Arctic adventure as one of just a handful of yachts to complete the Northwest Passage. Her owner and guests disembarked after the voyage of a lifetime, but the yacht continued on across the Bering Sea between Alaska and Russia to Kamchatka and into the Pacific Ocean to continue a second world tour that took her to Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15121/image/large-0c5da12f2cfb96ffe9a90d365949baa6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15121">Back in the Med last summer (after crossing from Auckland to Panama without refuelling), <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)Perini Navi2011">Galileo G</a> spent the season lazily cruising Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and the Amalfi coast. Then in September, she joined the fleet of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini</a> yachts attending the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi Cup - 2018">Perini Navi Cup</a> in Porto Cervo, just prior to the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2018">Monaco Yacht Show</a> where this time she was listed for sale with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a>.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/48169/image/large-de247cbacf648b405732a3bbc96107ab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/48169">Having covered some 90,000 nautical miles crisscrossing the oceans over the past seven years, it’s hard to imagine that any future owner will use the yacht quite so intensively to roam remote corners of the globe. But it’s even harder to imagine that her current owner will remain without a yacht for too long.“I’d like to build another boat eventually,” he admits. “I think it would be a bit bigger than Galileo G and would probably have diesel-electric propulsion. However, one superyacht owner, Silvio Scaglia, owner of the 55-metre Galileo G, made sure her exploring capabilities were written down in her contract with Perini Navi so he could safely transverse through the Northwest Passage. Having cruised around the world not one but two times, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)">Galileo G</a> is a true explorer yacht in every way possible. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/52615/image/large-1807c3702d3b8e0218b49144036b1c36.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/52615">That said, there are not many vessels in the fleet which have exploration capabilities that match that of the 55.75 metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alucia55.75m (182'11&quot;)">Alucia</a>. All-star superyacht fleet gathers for 2018 Perini Navi Cup

Italian yard Perini Navi has quietly been working on a new explorer-styled custom motor yacht, the 53m Voyager.&nbsp;Currently under construction in at the yard's facility in La Spezia, Italy, she is scheduled for delivery end of 2019.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/46553/image/large-3a154f6aef89b6234613e24c453983b6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46553">With an exterior designed by Vitruvius Yacht and naval architecture by Philippe Briand, the 52.6-metre superyacht distinguished design is said to have been influenced by other explorer yachts from Perini Navi, such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1939" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Exuma49.5m (162'5&quot;)">Exuma</a>,&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galileo G55.2m (181'1&quot;)">Galileo G</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautilus73.3m (240'6&quot;)">Nautilus</a>, resulting in her dignified lines. Voyager also features five crew cabins, with room to house nine members in addition to the captain.Powered by twin CAT C32 ACERT diesel engines, she will have a top speed of 16.5 knots, with a cruising speed of 15 knots and a range of 5500 nm at 12 knots.&nbsp;

First Look: Perini Navi 53m custom superyacht under construction

Today, Perini Navi has announced the sale of a new 56-metre motor yacht. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/16280/image/large-31856e3e5c98d1ab5649678ef8cb3f28.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16280"> The 56-metre motor yacht is built of steel and aluminium, with three decks, five staterooms and on-board accommodation for nine crew.&nbsp;In terms of her design, this new 56-metre Perini Navi follows the design of her predecessors, the motoryachtExuma (49.5m), the motoryacht Galileo G&nbsp;(55.2m) and the motoryacht Grace E (73.3m), which were all designed by the French naval architect Philippe Briand.&nbsp;“This 56m follows just weeks after the sale of a 60m sailing yacht,” commented Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of Perini Navi. “It confirms the effectiveness of the path we have chosen and the value of the process of focusing on our products and the quality that distinguishes them. The market is starting to grow again and Perini Navi is and wants to continue to be among the key players worldwide. This is possible not only by virtue of our company’s reputation, but also due to the recognition of our yachts at a global level.”As a result of this contract, Perini Navi’s order book is currently at €100 million.Perini Navi currently has four yachts, three motor and one sailing, in build. These are a 60-metre sailing yacht, a 25-metre&nbsp;motoryacht, a 53-metre&nbsp;motoryacht and the 56-metre&nbsp;motoryacht. In addition, the shipyard also has a signed Letter of Intent for a 42-metre sailing yacht.

The 73m superyacht Grace E in Portofino 

Grace E was built in 2013 by Perini Navi’s Picchiotti shipyard as the Italian company’s largest motor yacht to date. She is designed by Philippe Briand as part of the Vitruvius Yacht series, which today makes up a fleet of three yachts, including the 50-metre Exuma and 55-metre Galileo G. Her strong steel hull and powerful propulsion package means Grace E is perfectly suited for world travels and has been seen in a number of unique locations around the world since her launch. She is able to maintain a maximum speed of 16.5 knots with an impressive range of 7,500 nm while cruising at 12 knots. Here she is pictured in the tranquil Italian fishing port of Portofino over the past weekend.

Galileo G in Greenland

Seen here negotiating the treacherous ice fields of the Northwest Passage in the waters off Greenland is the world-cruising motor yacht Galileo G. As one of the few motor yachts built by the Italian shipyard and designed by Philippe Briand at Vitruvius Yachts, Galileo G is no stranger to exploring the outer reaches of the seven seas. With an Ice Classed hull and polar region Satcom system, Galileo G was purposefully designed for navigating in geographical zones characterised by very low temperatures.

Galileo G in Greenland

Motor yacht division of Perini Navi, and builders of world-cruising, streamline explorer yacht, Picchiotti, has introduced a new line of ‘modern classic’ superyachts. Together with Nauta Design, the studio behind the 180-metre Azzam, the first model to be displayed is a new 50-metre, sub-500 GT all-aluminium cruiser.

The new model is characterised by ‘elegantly crisp exterior lines and a discreet superstructure with a hard-top sundeck’.

As with previous Picchiotti superyachts, the yacht houses her tenders forward in the bow section and is launched by gullwing-like hatches on either side. This approach frees up the stern area where an impressive beach club with three-way fold down platforms awaits.

Nauta Design’s background in sailing yacht designs enabled them to approach the design with a space-saving and functional mentality. A total of five guest suites are onboard and consists of four guest stateroom son the lower deck and a full beam owner’s suite forward on main deck. The open foredeck above serves as a private terrace for the owner.

Picchiotti and Nauta Design reveal new Modern Classic line

Perini Navi is one of the few yacht builders whose fleet is continuously pushing the global reaches of modern-day superyachts with a handful of these Italian beauties in some of the remotest corners of our planet’s oceans at any given time. This summer has been no different, and driven by these owner’s competitive natures and adventurous spirits, we are again reminded of what the cruising alternatives to the Mediterranean and Caribbean hotspots are.

The 56 metre all-white Perini superyacht Rosehearty set out earlier this season on a daunting voyage to traverse one of the maritime world’s legendary routes – the Northwest Passage. Currently anchored in Arctic Bay in the Nunavut region in Canada, the yacht entered the passage nearly a month ago and has been spending time getting to know every corner of the passage on her journey so far.

The red and black 60-metre ketch, Seahawk, departed Florida in May this year with the Pacific as her destination. After a stop in Panama, the regatta-regular reached Tahiti where her Southern Ocean adventure would begin. The yacht has spent the past three months exploring the islands of Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora and the Society Islands. August signals the annual migrating season of whales in the region, which makes whale spotting a daily highlight for guests and crew on board. “We had two whales surround us in of the bays in Moorea,” recalls crew member Samuel Forbes. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Days are spent drift diving and appreciating the untouched ocean life in the region, with the day’s most difficult task being deciding on which deserted Pacific island to get the beach setup ready on next.

As one of the few motor yachts built by the Italian shipyard, Galileo G is no stranger to exploring the outer reaches of the seven seas. With an Ice Classed hull and polar region Satcom system, Galileo G was purposefully designed for navigating in geographical zones characterized by very low temperatures. It is therefore perhaps no surprise to find the Philippe Briand-designed yacht cruising through the Northwest Passage as her fellow Perini sister Rosehearty is. The yacht is currently heading through the Passage to reach Asia next month.

The Italian built explorer yacht Galileo G, designed by Philippe Briand and built by Picchiotti, is equipped as a ‘go-anywhere’ vessel. The Vitruvius series yacht has been designed and built according to Ice Class classification rules for navigating through extreme areas such as the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans through Canada’s Arctic Archipelago. Her owners have taken the yacht around the world since her delivery, and she has been spotted in some of the most remote corners of the world. Together with superyachts Exuma and Grace E, the three vessels make up the current Vitruvius fleet designed by the renowned London-based designer. She was seen arriving in Liverpool yesterday.

Owner takes delivery of Picchiotti ice class superyacht Galileo G

The Perini Navi Group is inaugurating the boat shows season at the Monaco Yacht Show (September 21-24) with the world premier of SY Fidelis, a 56m ketch, the tenth yacht in the 56m series and 51st yacht in the Group’s fleet. The Perini Navi Group will also present their 55m MY Galileo G, second motor yacht of the Vitruvius series built by their Picchiotti brand. Their second date will be for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, one of the international appointments most eagerly anticipated by yachtsmen, held this year from October 27th to 31st. The Perini Navi Group at the Monaco and Fort Lauderdale yacht shows

Designed by Philippe Briand, exclusively built by Picchiotti and brought to the market by Vitruvius Yachts Ltd., the Vitruvius Yachts are superyachts ranging from 44 to 73 metres. The Galileo G (55m) is the second model in this series produced by Picchiotti, the Perini Navi brand dedicated to motor yachts. On Saturday I was invited on-board this magnificent vessel for some of the first sea trials. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136125/image/large-9eec48fc85fb826656db3bc454b105c5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136125">On board I had a chat with designer Philippe Briand, who explained that the Vitruvius series derives its name from the Roman architect Vitruvius Pollio, the first to describe the perfect proportions in architecture. Leonardo Da Vinci based his works and drawings on Pollio’s first scriptures and paid homage to him in his drawing of The Vitruvian Man. The <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2496">Galileo G</a> is a perfect example of these characteristic proportions, particularly due to its superstructure-to-hull ratio. Philippe used his extensive experience in designed sailing yachts, to come up with a highly efficient motoryacht. Galileo G, like her sister the 50 metre <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1939">Exuma</a>, is an explorer, designed to meet its owner’s demands that she would be equipped “to go everywhere”, including the Northwest Passage, the route between the islands of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago where the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean meet. This Vitrivius was constructed in order with the guidelines for Ice Class 1B, meeting the demands for crossing the Northwest Passage. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136126/image/large-7b15542c187abcd465cc6229dd626f05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136126">The Galileo G was designed for 'Winterization,' a denomination that is obligatory for operating and navigating in geographical zones characterized by very low temperatures. Much of the yacht's equipment has been made in order to function at low temperaturs, and and made to prevent freezing. A good example is her clean flush foredeck, which prevents water being trapped, and consequent ice built-up. Heated winches and gaskets prevent further ice formation.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136127/image/large-597a35f409405c1562f24239cd38eddf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136127"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136128/image/large-6cd6b5acdb1384280beafaedb126f5c0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136128">Galileo G is fitted with an Ice Belt, positioned around the waterline, especially at the stern, centre and bow, at 400mm above the waterline at full load and at 500mm under the water line at light load. This belt must be able to carry loads of up to 55t/m². Above all, the steel used in the construction is thicker (25-30% above the norm), making the structure resistant to possible collisions with floating ice. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136129/image/large-cf22b537e235b4c88ccf112839150d1c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136129">During the presentation on Saturday, Burak Akgul, manager of the Perini Istanbul-Yildiz shipyard, pointed out that the yacht was in fact not designed to break ice, but rather be able to navigate in areas where there is the possibility of crossing areas that contain 40 cm of multiyear ice. Multiyear ice has distinct properties that distinguish it from first-year ice, based on processes that occur during the summer melt. Multiyear ice for example contains more air pockets than first-year ice. To detect ice, Galileo G is equipped with a retractable telescopic ice-detection sonar connected to a 3D monitor in the wheelhouse. This will detect submerged and semi-submerged obstacles along the course, at a distance up to 1km. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136130/image/large-a51ebe6ce11410e53cafb80ce9cb32be.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136130">Reinforcements on board Galileo G are strong enough to withstand high loads were used not just in the Ice Belt, but also in all of the appendages that protrude from the hull under the waterline: The rudders are fitted with ice knives, propeller blades are made out of Nibral: Nickel-Bronze-Aluminum, and her stabilizers have reinforced beams and attachment areas. Galileo G has three tenders: one 9.5m Hurricane Zodiac tender with an aluminum hull and reinforced tubes, one 6.3m Smuggler tender, and one 4.2m rescue tender. Two Lasers and four kayaks are also on-board. The yacht’s life raft system is heated, to ensure the ability to deploy the life rafts even in freezing conditions. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136131/image/large-0952d27dc32fc0a86be56c9078269221.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136131"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136132/image/large-66181f4ac4860a321a63ca2f4018caab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136132">One of the yachts most dominantly present features, her V-Sat Marine Antenna Seatel Cobhan 9797, has a dome diameter of 3,65m, and holds a 2,4 metre satellite dish. This ensures for hi-speed broadband internet connections on board. Galileo G’s construction time was approximately 40 months. The contract was signed in April 2008, some 8 months after the her predecessor Exuma was signed. The third unit in the Vitruvius range, a 73 metre, is currently in built at the Perini Istanbul-Yildiz shipyard in Turkey, and will be transported to Italy early 2012 to be completed. Unfortunately photos of the yacht’s interior are not being released for now, but we can reveal that she has a beautiful Mahogany and Wengé interior, adorned with the owners personal marine life photographs. Superyacht Galileo G ready to launch at Picchiotti

Italian superyacht builder Perini Navi has announced they will be bringing two superyachts to the Monaco Yacht Show, the brand new sailing yacht Fidelis, launched on April 16th 2011, and the Vitruvius Explorer 55 metre, which will be delivered to her owners soon. Designed by the Perini Navi Group’s technical and design department in collaboration with the New Zealand yacht designer, Ron Holland, S/Y Fidelis has a hull and superstructure in aluminium with an optimised displacement of 545 tons and a tonnage of 497 tons. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/135973/image/large-f32e4bf8a2e71605a2e59a814df70864.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/135574">The ketch sail plan, designed and engineered by Perini Navi’s mast division measures 1,500 square meters. Perini Navi at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show

The Picchiotti Vitruvius 50 metre superyacht, the first of three motor yachts sold to date by the Perini Navi Group, is ready for her launch, which is scheduled in the first week of July. The motor yacht was transported from one of the three new building sheds, each measuring 3,200 square metre, to the square outside, from where she will be fully completed for her launch. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131317/image/large-885e31903b23171f56f04c5276b3c0c2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131317">Giancarlo Ragnetti, CEO of the Perini Navi Group, commented: "It’s a moment of great pride and satisfaction to see the first motor boat in the history of Perini Navi with the Picchiotti brand completed and ready for launching. The hull of the C.2156 – 55m Picchiotti-Vitruvius motor-yacht was successfully transported by sea from the Perini Navi shipyard in Yildiz, Istanbul to the Beconcini Shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. The steel hull – complete with aluminium superstructure - started its journey to La Spezia on November 16th, the same day it was launched, at 18.30pm. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129654/image/large-416a136465495c727ffe12a5ce062e31.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129654"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129655/image/large-103cf80517b387d6c6869ba7de22ff05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129655">Thanks to good weather and her streamlined, hydrodynamic design, the Picchiotti-Vitruvius 55m Ice Class arrived in La Spezia two days ahead of schedule. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129656/image/large-07dc3fe3fdeb2b9064462c521aaca39f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129656">The journey was done at an average speed of 10 knots in light Northern winds. The hull navigated the Dardanelles, which connect the Marmaras Sea to the Aegean Sea and which, together with the Bosphorus Strait, mark the border between Europe and Asia. The following day, it started the crossing of the Ionian Sea and the Strait of Messina. The hull reached the Gulf of La Spezia in the early afternoon of Sunday November 22nd, and the next day it was moored at the wharf of the Beconcini Shipyard, waiting to be transferred inside one of three new 3.200 sq.m. sheds of the facility. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129657/image/large-8ea6eb45fe69d972c34ffe9a348528ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129657">This delicate operation will be carried out with the aid of the entire dedicated Beconcini team and their 820 ton “travel lift”. Transfer of 55m Picchiotti-Vitruvius superyacht successfully completed

At Perini Navi’s Yildiz Gemi facility in Istanbul, two more blocks of the Picchiotti-Vitruvius Ice Class 55 meters have been turned upright. The bow sections that weigh in at at 48 tonnes, illustrate the unique hull form adopted by the Vitruvius design concept for this new genre of Picchiotti-branded motoryachts. The Picchiotti-Vitruvius 55 meters is built to go through the North West Passage and to sail to Antarctica and so to circumnavigate the globe, and is therefor ice class rated. The Picchiotti-Vitruvius 55 meters has a range of 9,000 miles and thanks to the efficient hull lines and the fine water entree designed by Philippe Briand, will consume less than 150,000 litres of fuel.
