Following the sad news of Ed Dubois’ passing last week, here we take a moment to look back on one of our favourite interviews with Ed here at SuperYacht Times. Merijn de Waard sat down with Dubois, the mastermind behind the iconic designed fleet, at the 2015 edition of the Dubois Cup.

How did the Dubois Cup come about?

The idea formed during the 2007 America’s Cup, held in Valencia, and it was this gathering that led to the idea of a race. It was two of our clients who first said, “I’ve counted eight of your boats here, why don’t you have a little regatta?” I thought they were joking. They said “No, you should do it, it’s good publicity, the boats are more or less the same type and they race at the same speed!” So that’s what started it, it was actually not my idea as much as that of the owner’s.

Has the event paid off for you, in terms of business?

Yes. We had a future client in 2007 who at the time was still undecided whether or not he wanted to commit to a new yacht. We brought him to the regatta that same year and it pushed him over the edge. So yes, definitely. Another client in 2011 was discussing the design for Escapade with a few designers, including myself. He attended the Cup later that year with his wife, and they loved it. He later told me it was the event that made him decide to go ahead with the ship.

	Following on the success of motor yachts such as Como and Kiss, have you received more interest for projects such as these?

Como was very successful and partially because it was quite different. She was the eighth boat we have done with the owner and the previous motor yacht we did, the old Como, was built by Alloy Yachts and had a completely different style. So in 2011 I did a new design following on the old concept, one with a vertical bow and reverse sheer. She is different but I always knew that it will catch people’s imagination. I am bound to say this but my whole life is about drawing boats and getting the thrill out of that.

 

And Kiss shares a very similar design…

We began discussing Kiss in 2010 already with a client who was looking for a yacht to sail around the world with his family. The yacht would initially have been built at a shipyard in Ukraine, Jongert was even considered, but eventually they opted for Feadship, which I was really glad about as they just enjoy working with us.

You have had a very long standing relationship with Alloy Yachts. What was the reason for your projects being built by them? Price, quality, your relationship with the yard?

The price. When Neville Crichton wanted to build one of our designs in an established New Zealand yard in 1989, he decided to go with Alloy Yachts. They were about 30 people then and hardly established.

When Esprit was launched in 1991, he sold her for double the money. In 1993 they were still only 30-40 people, but they were already making money on the boats that they were building. Basically, you could build them in Kiwi Dollars and sell them for U.S. Dollars. And back then it was over 2:1, so they built it for NZ $10,000,000 and sold it for NZ $20,000,000, about US $10,000,000, which is double. People were making money. So we established this relationship with Alloy Yachts by chance really. It developed, and we built 23 boats with them in the end.

In terms of technology, what is going to be the next big change in the sailing industry?

In this industry, change will always be driven by materials. Carbon fibre is increasingly used for larger projects due to its weight-saving advantages and additional stiffness – key for sailing performance. Countering this however is the trend towards greater use of glass.

Glass as a design feature is becoming very popular, glass superstructures are the latest trend, but they are a big obstruction to weight saving. Advancement in glass toughening and lamination has enabled this, but key technological drivers will always be geared towards efficiency and performance. Any weight-saving technologies are always quickly adopted and weight saving is having a big impact at the smaller end of the market too, with yachts of 30 - 35 metres, designed to be much more race-orientated. Those are the technologies to watch.

Ed Dubois, founder of Dubois Naval Architects, will be sadly missed by the entire industry and appreciated for his creative impact.

Alloy’s Como leaving Port Vauban

The new service facility of Monaco Marine La Ciotat opened its doors to megayachts at the end of April 2007. Vincent Larroque, director of the shipyard, is proud to report a very active first 9 months of activity, with no less than 25 hauling out, and a very tight schedule for the beginning of 2008.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123778/image/large-431490642cdacc69b27fc6ca86f7578d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123778">The site covers a total area of 35.000 square meters, with 2 200 square meters dedicated to offices and workshops. The 2000 ton Yachtlift® is positioned sideways against the quay feeding a large transfer and storage system on rails, giving maximum versatility and speed of operation. 2007 : A successful year for Monaco Marine La Ciotat

The 41m (134ft) motoryacht Como, built by Alloy Yachts and launched in 2006, won its second international award in October when it received the International Superyacht Society Design award for the Best Interior Design for a Motoryacht. The award was presented during the Ft Lauderdale Boat Show in the US. Earlier this year, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/409">Como</a> won the Best Motoryacht Exterior Styling prize at the Boat International 2007 World Superyacht Awards held in Venice. Como was designed by Dubois Naval Architects with an interior by Redman Whiteley Dixon Design. The International Superyacht Society Design award was the 18th international award received by the New Zealand yard. Como is the fourth Alloy Yachts vessel to receive more than one award from international judging panels. “Naturally, we are delighted to receive this recognition,” said Alloy Yachts Managing Director Tony Hambrook. “We have always strived to provide our customers with yachts of outstanding quality that will stand comparison with the very best in the world. These awards tell us that we are achieving that objective.” <noscript></noscript>

Como receives its second major 2007 award

The 41m (134ft) motoryacht <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/409">Como</a>, was launched on 12th November 2006 at Alloy Yachts, New Zealand. The yacht commenced construction in March 2005. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/121859/image/large-d6b35f96fdc96d03109eab8d63409d4a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/121859"> Managing Director Tony Hambrook commented that the Dubois Naval Architect designed <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/409">Como</a> is the largest motoryacht built at Alloy Yachts. She has an 8.5m (27.9ft) beam, draft of 1.9m (6.2ft) and displaces 214 tonnes. The interior design is by Redman Whiteley Dixon. The main accommodation on the lower deck has two double guest cabins and two twin cabins, all with ensuites. The crew quarters have a double Captains cabin and two twin cabins all with ensuites. This area also includes the galley, crew mess and separate laundry. The engine room houses two Caterpillar C30 1550hp engines. Two Caterpillar 55kw generators are built-in together with one 55kw Mastervolt shore power converter. The 6.0m tender is stored in the lazarette and is launched through a watertight door on the port side. The 4.3m crew tender is stored on the foredeck with a davit for launching. A docking station is fitted on the starboard side of the aft cockpit. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/409">Como</a> carries 36000 litres of fuel with a cruising speed of 16 knots and a sprint speed of 17.5 knots. Her range at 10 knots is 4000nm. There are two water makers each producing 4500 litres per day. The main deck has an aft cockpit and an alfresco dining area with a sliding sunscreen. Forward is the main saloon with bar aft and separate dining area with seating for up to 10 guests. Large wrap around windows provide expansive views. Ahead of the dining area and on a half level above the main deck is the bridge. A stairway leads from here up to the flybridge which can also be accessed from the aft cockpit. This expansive area includes a bar, barbecue and dining for up to twelve guests under a fixed sun awning. There is also extensive built in seating and a large sunpad. Forward of the guest lobby on the starboard side of the main deck is the owner’s lobby leading to the master cabin with large walk in wardrobe and two ensuites with central shower. On the port side of the master suite is a lounge area and owner’s study. The yacht has a Naiad stabiliser system plus bow and stern thrusters and the latest Alloy Yachts designed and built passerelle. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/409">Como</a> is built to Lloyds classification and complies with the Large Yacht Code. She is flagged in the Cayman Islands.
