Today the brokerage house <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> has announced the appointment of Chris Andreason as the firm’s Director of Yacht Management. With a diverse marine background that began in the Navy at the age of 16, Chris has developed from officer to superyacht captain, to build captain and finally build project manager. As a result, Chris is due to bring a wealth of experience to the brokerage house, in addition to a passion for mentorship that he will now turn to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> team. We sat down with Chris ahead of his appointment, to get an insight into how he intends to develop the yacht management department of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>, and to understand what has driven him to take on this next challenge.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303875/image/large-b98057736855f7bd1d54784bac5f3f5c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303875">Can you share a bit of your professional background and what initially drew you to the marine sector?I was born in Portsmouth and grew up watching the ships come and go. From a very young age I knew I wanted to work at sea, and it was a toss up between the Royal Marines and Royal Navy. In the end only the Navy was recruiting when I signed up at 16, so I joined up as a Junior Seaman. Fortunately I played a lot of rugby and that brought me to the attention of the right people, who pulled me out and sent me to Dartmouth to train as an officer.&nbsp;I spent 10 years in the Navy, and then just as I was thinking about leaving I saw an article about Robert Maxwell’s mysterious death aboard Lady Ghislaine (58-metre Amels yacht now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/866" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dancing Hare57.7m (189'4&quot;)Amels1986">Dancing Hare</a>). Immediately I thought, ‘I wonder who drives those things’ and that was really a trigger point for me. At the same time Peter Bennett had put an ad in Navy News advertising <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/336" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluewater Yachting (Company)">Bluewater</a> as a crew agent and I was one of his first captains. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220869/image/large-e703edcfb3229dfc5628be99d2f125c6.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220869">Since then you have been captain, refit and new-build captain and project manager. How did you take on each of those experiences and build your portfolio of projects?I think you have to work your way up through the system, much like in the Navy, and if you are proactive and eager to learn, those experiences build your capabilities and reputation. I have been fortunate to work on three new-build projects, two at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1502" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fountainhead87.78m (287'12&quot;)Feadship2011">Fountainhead</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/285" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nectar65.2m (213'11&quot;)Feadship2006">Callisto</a>), and one at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking</a> (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4094" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Grace81.0m (265'9&quot;)Abeking & Rasmussen2014">Grace</a>). Before <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/285" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nectar65.2m (213'11&quot;)Feadship2006">Callisto</a>, I’d managed the five year refit of the first Solemates (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ostar52.0m (170'7&quot;)Feadship1998">Ostar</a>) and that taught me a huge amount about project management, the yard and what yards and crew needed during those periods.&nbsp;In fact, my interview for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/285" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nectar65.2m (213'11&quot;)Feadship2006">Callisto</a> new-build captaincy, not that I knew it was an interview at the time, was a one-month charter aboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ostar52.0m (170'7&quot;)Feadship1998">Solemates</a>. You build those capabilities over time and as you get older, you begin to think ‘what's next?’<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/236129/image/large-f326a71dd7e52019806d329233790122.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/236129"> What was the moment you decided to move shoreside?I never wanted to be the old captain competing with, and diminishing, younger crew, I always wanted to be part of the generation that helps, encourages and empowers the next generation. I decided to take on relief work and that ended up being a really interesting period, because you see the best and the worst in terms of yacht management, crew challenges and resolution. Sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up and work out how to make a situation better for the crew and owner and it became my goal to leave a positive impact. Many of those young officers have gone on to become chief officers and superyacht captains and I am proud that I’m still in touch with a large number who continue to reach out to me for advice. Helping those crew develop and ensuring that they don't fall into the holes I did has become a real driver for me and is something I really look forward to bringing to this role at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>.&nbsp;Mentorship is clearly a big passion of yours, how do you plan to bring this to your next role?I was incredibly lucky throughout my career in the Navy and in yachting, to receive great support from some great individuals, and those people really shaped my career. Not everyone has that fortune, but I think we have a responsibility to offer those opportunities. In my early conversations with Alex Holden of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>, we talked a lot about the leadership and mentorship experience I've developed over recent years – such as my monthly webinars with BZ Maritime Leadership where I open up candid conversations with 30-40 captains and give them a safe space to discuss their concerns and experiences.What I have realised is that many of the issues captains experience are shared, and it is likely that I myself have experienced them during my career. Helping others to overcome those problems and challenges is really what makes me tick and Alex really picked up on that during our conversations. It is certainly a big part of what we want to bring into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>’s Yacht Management department.What, for you, are the key skill sets that successful yacht managers need and how do you plan to&nbsp;help them develop those skills?It is the responsibility of the yacht management team to support the owners and captains with the right level of operational, technical, financial and administrative knowledge. The management of a superyacht is not a one person job, and successful management requires a team of experts working together. We will ensure that anyone working with our owners and brokers has a strong technical and maritime background with the right training to properly advise their crew. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> yacht management department already has a number of very experienced team members. We will be the ones to set the scene and inspire confidence in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> team for the client, and then the yacht managers have that thorough knowledge to back up the technical crew and those who are working with captains and crew day-to-day.I think it’s important to note that I am not suddenly going to become the captains’ champion. Of course, I will be the captain’s champion, provided that they are working professionally and being reasonable in the demands that they make of the management teams. What I hope to bring to the table is the ability to understand and articulate the challenges that captains face, in order to resolve them in a more structured way, which is better for the crew and better for the owner.&nbsp;Were you already familiar with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>&nbsp;and why did you decide to work with them?&nbsp;Interestingly, in all my years in the industry, I have never worked with Edmiston and in a way, that made the decision very easy for me because I had no preconceived notions about the firm and no favours to call in. Over the years I have been approached by other brokerage houses for similar roles, but It was never the right time for me to step away from a life, at least partially, onboard. When I was approached about this role, I was prepared to go 100 percent for the position because I had no agenda and because they seem to share my passion and ethics for building a strong and educated team.&nbsp;What are you most looking forward to within this role, and is there anything you feel will be particularly challenging?All the things that make me tick align with E<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">dmiston</a>’s company mentality. They are committed to crew welfare, the leadership and mentoring of the team and to be a part of an organisation that is determined to be a force for good within that is very important to me. Having a platform to address the challenges that people face within this sector is very exciting. I also think that the talent pool that comes into yachting is very small when compared to other sectors, and so we have a responsibility to strengthen the skills and abilities of those people who choose yachting as their career.&nbsp;I firmly believe that as an industry we expect too little from people when it comes to training, and that the baseline of safety standards are too low, with yachts and crew expected to meet only the minimum requirements. We should be working to the highest standards, but bringing that to the table is going to be a challenge. I am not looking to break the wheel, but I believe there are others out there with a similar mindset who are willing to do things differently, and I am excited that Edmiston sees the potential.&nbsp;

Exclusive: Chris Andreason on his new role as Director of Yacht Management at Edmiston

With a career spanning more than two decades, an exceptional line up of yachts to his name and more than 300 metres of yacht launched last year alone, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4540" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vickers Studio (Company)">John Vickers</a> is a man worth speaking to. Starting his career as one of the first designers at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">Redman Whiteley Dixon (now RWD)</a>, John cut his teeth on the myriad of major projects that the studio underwent in its foundling years and by the age of only 27 he was project managing the interior design of the 155-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Said155.0m (508'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2008">Al Said</a>. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291899/image/large-83211a262a6c8863d1ef91e856500bc0.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291899">Originally destined for a life onboard, John has a deep love of classic yachts but realised quite quickly that he needed an injection of creativity in his life to keep him excited. Having studied design in the UK, he returned to shore and applied for a job at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">RWD</a>, becoming the now 60 person strong company’s fifth employee and learning from the three founding partners. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291014/image/large-499e0b3afc4caa64349fca334def7003.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291014">Thrown in at the deep end and eager to learn &nbsp;John quickly began to take on some major design projects, the award winning 55.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> Twizzle (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mary A55.5m (182'1&quot;)Feadship2005">Mary A</a>) and 73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ilona82.0m (269'0&quot;)Amels2004">Ilona</a> and of course the aforementioned <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Said155.0m (508'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2008">Al Said</a>, the largest volume yacht in the world at the time. “It was an amazing experience being in my 20s, learning from talented designers and working on projects like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Said155.0m (508'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2008">Al Said</a> involved the full breadth of design processes. I was running creative teams, CAD drawing teams, visualising teams, and building systems to run all of these design elements in tandem, which became formative for later projects.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/72312/image/large-e4a7c4f1e57157c00ce106ef28187a9f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/72312"> <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/72305/image/large-0cf888e903bbec0fdc91ff6ec83d517d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/72305">John worked with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">RWD</a> for seven years, before joining the London-based architecture firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/423" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Candy & Candy (Company)">Candy &amp; Candy</a> which was in the process of setting up a yachting arm to the business. John built the team and together they worked on the design of the 62-metre Candyscape II, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/418" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sealion62.0m (203'5&quot;)VSY2009">Sealion</a>, completing the interior and exterior design in only four months and going on to win the best superyacht awards for the first build of a brand new Italian shipyard. After leaving <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/423" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Candy & Candy (Company)">Candy &amp; Candy</a> in 2007, John was asked to join the studio of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Terence Disdale Design (Company)">Terence Disdale</a>, one of the industry’s most well respected and longest standing firms. After several years overlooking the Thames the studio escaped the city to a barn conversion studio near Chichester harbour on the UK’s beautiful south coast. The passion from the studio is obvious with the level of detail and care taken with the owners' dream projects. John loves to listen and create unique designs with creative layers in each pen line and shape. “We love to perfect the exterior in conjunction with the layout, which also gets the best results for the interior design. Having solved so many interior design problems, we find that often the interior designer gets brought in last for a project, in reality they should be involved right from the start helping create a really spectacular layout. We do interiors, exteriors and layout styling of the whole yacht, &nbsp;which gives us the opportunity to really achieve spectacular results from inside it to out.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/186990/image/large-84aa03a7ceee1701fce134d9828c5369.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/186990">“We really like to discover the passions and history of a client which we include into a yacht's DNA, creating complete design personalisation.” This John feels has to be the ultimate luxury. It has meant that the majority of his new-builds have won superyacht awards, even when not building at top tier shipyards. “It’s not something you can ever guarantee, but we have seemed to do it fairly regularly’; something that might be of interest to shipyards and clients wanting this level of top industry recognition. In the last eight years, many have been semi custom and refits tailored meticulously to very varied tastes and styles of the client”. However, John’s personal aesthetic direction includes yacht style such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6037" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue II55.99m (183'8&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2020">Blue II&nbsp;</a>or elegant beach house vibes like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Calypso I36.0m (118'1&quot;)Mulder Shipyard2019">Calypso</a>. His preference would be clean stylish simplicity, however, he is equally at home creating ‘wow factor’ interiors, such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6595" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanbird53.0m (173'11&quot;)Sanlorenzo2021">Oceanbird</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291307/image/large-8fe2db3e479378f4eadf7f3ec59c724a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291307">One of John’s many strengths is to turn around major design projects to a very tight schedule, building the team and putting systems in place in the earliest stages. It is a strength which has been particularly important over recent years with the increase of refit projects and a much higher demand for short new-build completions. In 2022 alone John’s team completed the refit of 75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Meserret III75.0m (246'1&quot;)Peene-Werft GmbH1992">Leander</a>, 88.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4794" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Infinity88.5m (290'4&quot;)Oceanco2015">Cloud 9</a> and 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6595" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanbird53.0m (173'11&quot;)Sanlorenzo2021">Oceanbird</a>, as well as the new-build interior design of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> 56.5-metre Alma and they are adept at working on an array of complex projects simultaneously.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291302/image/large-edcda66b5f582287fa165d634a2a5320.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291302">“Because of my 23 years experience we have become specialists in producing a lot of quality design work to a very tight schedule, and also coming into difficult projects late and turning them around under pressure. We recently did a very demanding and detailed refit on the 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6595" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanbird53.0m (173'11&quot;)Sanlorenzo2021">Oceanbird</a>, we expanded the team to 15 strong and produced 24 visuals and 50 CAD drawings in less than four weeks, and for the 75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Meserret III75.0m (246'1&quot;)Peene-Werft GmbH1992">Leander</a> we completed full layout redesign with complicated interior joinery creation all for a very experienced owner on four-decks in only eight weeks.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237702/image/large-0ed4b3794019bf9b0d5c2d5d4a5ce007.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237702">Over the coming year he hopes to further expand the portfolio of projects, with his team of design experts and with two refits and a number of new-builds already underway.

Additionally, could you provide some insights into your background and journey?I have sailed my entire life, starting around the age of two in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight, then sailing alongside my brother on various sailboats, including Hobie Cats, 420s and Lasers.I was initially destined for a career in the British Army having been awarded a top scholarship in my intake to Sandhurst. Unfortunately, my rugby career was also running parallel to this and I had to have eight knee operations which resulted in a medical discharge from military service. The obvious next move was to go into banking, something my family has been involved with since the 1650s. That said it was 2010 and the recession was still hitting the banking sector hard, and it look thoroughly unappealing! &nbsp;Through a rather tenuous link a potential job opening was presented to me at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>. With my childhood love of sailing, I thought that the yachting industry could be an interesting path so I applied and underwent a rigorous interview process, competing with 63 or so other applicants for a single position. I ended up being selected as Chris Cecil-Wright’s junior, starting out in the listings department. Shortly after accepting the role, I relocated to Monaco and that marked the beginning of my career at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>.&nbsp;Eventually, Chris and I decided to leave and establish <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright (Company)">Cecil Wright &amp; Partners</a>, officially opening the business on 4th June 2013. The idea of working within a smaller, tightly knit team had always appealed to me. Having Chris, one of the prolific yacht brokers in the world, as my mentor was instrumental in my development, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had that opportunity.Interestingly, if you had asked me during my university days what I envisioned for my post-army career, becoming a yacht broker would never have crossed my mind. The yachting industry seemed like a distant and exclusive world that I never considered.Yacht brokers typically come from backgrounds which are already in some way affiliated with yachting; sons of other brokers, captains who go land based and, on occasion, transitions from associated fields such as yachting journalism. Bringing a fresh perspective and new insight to the industry has been quite intriguing. It is worth highlighting that banking and finance, my familial background, is known for its forward-thinking approach and use of innovative technologies, which stood in stark contrast to the antiquated practices I found in the yachting sector.Reflecting on the impact we have made on the industry, particularly in terms of innovations like 3D scanning, we introduced this technology back in 2015, I would like to think that we have brought the industry a pace or two forward. Surprisingly, many have not adopted it, which I find fairly astonishing. We have successfully sold several yachts without the need for potential buyers to physically visit them. This approach has played a crucial role in shaping our interactions with clients and building enduring relationships in the industry. When Chris and I founded our company, we deeply analysed the market to determine which segments of the industry offered the most potential for success. We focused on identifying what sells quickly, retains value, and the type of clientele associated with very large pedigree vessels. Our findings pointed out that the large pedigree vessel segment is not only secure and more liquid but the people who owned them were less susceptible to market fluctuations.&nbsp;Our goal is not to sell a multitude of yachts to a vast number of clients but to ensure that we offer the right yacht to the right client from the outset. This requires us to prioritise our clients' interests over short-term gains. We do not engage in practices that might encourage clients to overpay or provide them with inaccurate information about a yacht's value. In the world of yacht brokerage, it is an interesting paradox, doing better for our clients often means making less on a deal.We firmly believe that the long-term benefits of fostering trust and credibility with our clients far outweigh any short-term financial gains. Our business thrives on referrals and networks, and we understand that by consistently acting in the best interests of our clients, they are more likely to introduce us to their peers.One distinctive aspect of our approach is our collaborative nature. Unlike many other companies where a single broker is exclusively responsible for a client and their yacht, we encourage internal collaboration within the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright (Company)">CWP</a> team. Choosing yachts with a Northern European pedigree as our brokerage's focus has been a strategic decision driven by several key factors. What you tend to find is that, by and large, the consistency of quality produced by these Northern European yards is more reliable. However, it's essential to note that, like any business, some yards may cut corners to maximise profits especially if not overseen by an independent build manager.&nbsp;They tend to retain their value better over time because they are generally built to a higher standard. When it comes to warranty work, these yachts typically require very minimal repairs, and most issues can be addressed in the field.For instance, if a yacht, such as a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, undergoes maintenance at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> in Barcelona, you'll notice that the need for extensive repairs is rare. Comparatively, some other brands have been known to experience delays and extensive post-delivery work. When it comes to trends in the yachting industry, it's important to understand that changes often unfold gradually. One noteworthy trend we're currently witnessing is the rising interest in explorer yachts. This trend encompasses both chartering and ownership, with many clients seeking out more adventurous destinations.Furthermore, regulatory factors are exerting a significant influence. For instance, in the South of France and Corsica, issues like seagrass and the associated anchoring restrictions are driving people to explore different locations. Spain, on the other hand, presents an interesting scenario due to its stringent VAT policies. Chartering in Spain now entails a 45% VAT for non-EU flagged vessels. However, there are creative ways to navigate these challenges. With the growing awareness of environmental sustainability, how does <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright (Company)">Cecil Wright and Partners</a> navigate this shift, and what unique advantages do sailing yachts offer in terms of eco-friendliness?In the context of environmental sustainability, the perception that sailing yachts are more environmentally friendly than motor yachts while underway is true, but when a sailing yacht is at anchor and using a generator, the environmental advantage diminishes. Additionally, it is a complex issue because, in terms of construction, the environmental impact of sailing yachts and motor yachts of the same tonnage is not significantly different either.&nbsp;We acknowledge the importance of green credentials. Carbon offsetting is a concept we support and promote. Personally, I believe it should be a standard practice in the industry, especially concerning charters.Carbon offsetting can be introduced as an opt-out option rather than opt-in. When presented with an opt-in option, most people tend not to choose it, whereas with an opt-out option, fewer opt-out. For instance, if you include a special condition in a charter contract, stating that carbon offsetting is applied, with the option to opt-out, you would be surprised how many clients choose to offset. The cost of offsetting a charter is relatively small, considering the overall value of the charter.Finally, personally, if you could invest in a yacht, what would you choose and why?I am a sailor at heart, so I would go for a sailing yacht. SYT&nbsp;catches up with Will Christie, founder of yacht brokerage <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6451" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christie Yachts (Company)">Christie Yachts</a>, to find out what motivated him to set up his own firm, his predictions for the market in the coming years and how he believes <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6451" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christie Yachts (Company)">Christie Yachts</a> stands out from the crowd!&nbsp;You were Head of Sales at a top industry company previously, why have you now chosen to set up your own brokerage?After two decades in the industry I felt that I had the necessary credibility, experience, industry relationships and established client base to start out on my own. Many clients and industry colleagues had encouraged me to do this earlier in my career but various circumstances came into play that made now the right time to forge my own path. Timing is everything with such decisions. The current strength of the market and the way in which I predict yachting will only become more popular played a big part. I see a lot of opportunities for a focused, specialist outfit such as ours.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203685/image/large-bb4b49fe4b0994709fc1f6f575672336.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203685">What differentiates you and your company from the competition?More than ever clients want a trusted advisor closely by their side representing their interests when they are purchasing, constructing, or selling a yacht. They expect this advice to add quantifiably to the process, rather than just being supplied information that they could get through a simple Google search themselves. Christie Yachts is a specialist in this area with two decades of experience, providing really focused, personal and expert advice.For example, we aren’t a yacht management company trying to do yacht brokerage or a yacht brokerage trying to do yacht management - we will not be distracted by other services. Where we don’t offer a service, we will introduce clients to the very best fit for them in that area while clients will get the benefit of someone managing the entire process.&nbsp;In yacht construction, it is also important to build up a team that will get the very best end-result for a client. That means putting together a team, with us at the heart coordinating everything, that has proper experience at the yard in question.&nbsp;I believe that this bespoke approach will be a great benefit to clients who want to know they have the very best representation and advice, while not paying for services they simply don’t require.Finally, we will be fully transparent about how we earn fees. Not only do ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNWI) understand the freedom and flexibility that yachting offers in the current environment but Covid-19 has propelled the way that people work by about 25 years. Previously yacht owners were actually a fair bit more senior in years than you might think. The reason being is that younger UHNWIs were stuck in their offices, busy building their businesses.&nbsp;I had a lot of clients who until recently would only consider chartering a yacht as they said they only took a few weeks holiday every year but that they would consider it later in life when less busy. Now every UHNWI has been forced to work remotely and has experienced that it is totally possible. Owning a yacht has now become justifiable for them as they can spend extended times on board both working while enjoying the relaxing and comfortable benefits of being on their own yacht wherever and whenever they choose.&nbsp;I have one client who flies in to join his yacht with his trading terminals - he is able to work while still getting to enjoy watersports at the start and end of the day and spending time with his family. It is incredibly enjoyable to work with a buyer setting out on a journey to find or build a yacht that meets their requirements and expectations knowing that they, their family and friends will make so many special memories on board.&nbsp;Significant sales have included the stunning 91m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)John Brown & Sons1930">Nahlin</a> and the construction and subsequent sale of yachts such as the 82m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> Kibo (now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4094" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Grace81.0m (265'9&quot;)Abeking & Rasmussen2014">Grace</a>) and 57m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> Larisa (now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3663" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="W57.6m (188'12&quot;)Feadship2013">W</a>).<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/4763/image/large-d6b11c735fff1e9300269ef834ec76ba.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/4763">If I had to pick one standout one though, it would have to be the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53577" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="50m Heesen superyacht Erica sold (2021-08-24 14:45:00 +0200)">recent sale of the 50m Heesen Erica</a> (now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6107" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Toute Sweet49.8m (163'5&quot;)Heesen Yachts2019">Toute Sweet</a>) which marks one of the first deals that I have done since starting <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6451" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christie Yachts (Company)">Christie Yachts</a>. Not only is she a very recognised and striking design by one of the leading Dutch shipyards, but we found the client a yacht in a market with almost no pedigree yachts available at present. The client was referred to us by someone I greatly admire and respect which was also a great compliment that they trusted us to look after this client. Through industry contacts we managed to track down this very special off-market opportunity and had the deal concluded within weeks of being introduced to the buyer. They are now very happy and satisfied owners. This deal in itself, within two months of establishing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6451" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christie Yachts (Company)">Christie Yachts</a>, made the decision to go it alone feel truly worthwhile.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195283/image/large-722a3a2b1ab345a8f65c3337c1492835.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195283">What is the most important trait that makes a successful yacht broker?100% it is honesty. You have to tell it how it is to clients as they are coming to you for advice in an area where they may not have much experience. They expect you to be the expert adding quantifiable value to the process. It is so important to give honest advice so that clients’ expectations are realistically managed.&nbsp;In the case of a buyer, this would include explaining the limitations of a yacht, its true market value, the ability to resell easily in the future, realistic rather than mythical operational budget and charter income as well as any short to medium term maintenance which may prove costly down the line.&nbsp;For a seller, it would be explaining true market value to set the asking price at the right level both to attract interest and to attain the optimal price. I’ve seen so many yachts come to the market with ridiculous asking prices as the owners have been promised an unrealistic price by the broker in question just to secure the Central Agency. The yacht then ends up on the market for years while the owner endures ongoing running costs and depreciation.As an industry we need to be honest to ensure that clients remain owners for years to come as they have had a good experience through receiving proper guidance.

The highly private yacht offers accommodation in four identical double guest cabins as well as a VIP forward on the main deck. One deck above is the owner’s stateroom, which offers 180-degree views forward.

Established in 1907 by George Abeking and Henry Rasmussen, the Lemwerder-based shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> initially specialised in sailing yachts and minesweepers. The first motor yacht ever built by the German shipyard was the 36.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8838" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kalamoun36.52m (119'10&quot;)Abeking & Rasmussen1972">Kalamoun</a> delivered in 1972. At the time, Kalamoun was the fastest motor yacht in the world. In total, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking and Rasmussen</a> have built 35 motor yachts over 30 metres. These yachts have a total length of 2,029 metres, an average length of 58 metres and an average volume of 1,190 gross tons (GT). Their average asking price is €36 million with an average asking price of €37,000 per GT and an average of 371 days spent on the market so far.- &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Staying in the Netherlands with the superyacht builder Feadship, there are currently 23 used <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/feadship/for-sale" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Feadship yachts for sale</a> with an average asking price of €25.7 million which gives an average asking price of €36,000 per GT. On average, these yachts have spent 494 days on the market.- &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Having a look at German competitor Nobiskrug, there are only two <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/nobiskrug/for-sale" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Nobiskrug yachts for sale</a>. They have an average asking price of €48.8 million with an average asking price of €33,000 per GT. On average, they have been on the market for 2,104 days.- &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A good market overview would not be complete without including an Italian builder. Codecasa currently has six used <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/codecasa/for-sale" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Codecasa yachts for sale</a> in the reference category. They have an average asking price of €19 million per yacht or €23,000 per GT. On average, these yachts have spent 793 days on the market so far.- &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Finally, we look at Turkish builder, Turquoise Yachts, of which there are currently eight used steel-hulled motor yachts between 40 and 90 metres for sale. These <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/turquoise/for-sale" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Turquoise yachts for sale</a> have an average asking price of €17.5 million per yacht or €22,000 per GT. The third quarter of 2018 saw the highest number of used <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/abeking-rasmussen/for-sale" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen yachts for sale</a> listed on the market with three units. Their average last asking price was €99.3 million per yacht or €49,260 per GT. Needless to say, a few minutes later, I’m relieved to find myself off the London Underground and sat comfortably with a cup of tea at the meeting table of the Terence Disdale Design studio. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/46518/image/large-4c54e2601a646160f0c56dc3c785433e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46518">I was prepared to feel a little on edge… this is, after all, the studio of the world-renowned designer who has penned such iconic designs as the 81-metre Abeking &amp; Rasmussen yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4094" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kibo81.0m (265'9&quot;)">Kibo</a>, the 147.25-metre Lürssen-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3962" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Topaz147.25m (483'1&quot;)">Topaz</a>, and, of course, the largest yacht in the world at the time of her launch: the 162.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Eclipse162.5m (533'2&quot;)">Eclipse</a> built by Blohm + Voss. Instead, I feel at ease. Surrounded by beautifully intriguing furniture, pieces of strange, exotic and wildly expensive materials and, of course, a couple of tables full of shining Neptune trophies... This place is sophisticated but homey, and reassuringly cool. But I’m not here to merely admire Terence Disdale’s office, I’m here to sit down with Terence Disdale. And soon enough the man himself comes in and warmly greets me.&nbsp;Starting out in the business working under Jon Bannenberg in the late 60s (hired on the spot after turning up unannounced, politely refusing to make an appointment and instead wait patiently for a moment with Bannenberg!), Disdale broke off on his own in 1973 and is today one of the most celebrated icons of superyacht design. He points out a couple of sketches on the wall here and there as we make our way down to his studio, and stops to take me briefly through some of the gigantic superyacht models dotted around the walls. These projects are so bespoke, so private, that even though I know the names of the models in front of me, I’ve never had the chance to study them in such detail. In fact, much of Disdales best works may never be seen - at least not to the 99.9%. “Confidentiality is everything,” he tells me. “When you get to the level we are at now, our work is never published. The world probably thinks we retired years ago! You know, someone once asked me if I had made all the awards we have in our greeting room which I found quite funny… But our latest projects are so confidential that in the end we’ll probably have to make our own!” he laughs.We enter his studio, filled with light and overlooking a small, green garden. Very much living up to his ‘rockstar’ title, he immediately turns down the classic rock album blaring out of his old-school CD player in the corner of the room. Not quite living up to the rock star image in the same way, two adorable tiny dogs are also pretty excited to join us for the interview. “So,” I start, Chihuahua on knee. “Where did it all begin?”&nbsp;“I was born and bred in London and left school at 15 with little idea of what career path I would take,” he starts. “I’m only a yacht designer by accident - I really just wanted to be a designer, period. At first I worked at an engineering company as a junior engineering draughtsman - basically the tea boy - and was soon promoted when they realised I could actually draw. In the very early days, I was involved in film set design. You’re designing something to do with the Roman Empire one day, and the next you’re moving on to a sci-fi set. It’s brilliant! It’s really phenomenal how they can encompass all of these details, it takes a lot of talent. If I had have gone to work for someone other than Jon Bannenberg, I would have probably done something else.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/46523/image/large-5c997e8a4edc27430fec7adc5bc1dd13.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46523">You’re constantly described as the rockstar of superyacht design. Why?&nbsp;I only get called that because I’ve got long hair and wear cowboy boots! I guess I do also manage a rock band of a friend of mine, too. I’ve done that for about 20 years now. I did think once upon a time that if the band got successful I would travel the world with them, but you go where the wind blows you. I’m pretty entrenched in what I do with design… I’m not really a band manager. It was one of those dreams, you know. I like cars, but I never really thought about getting into car design.&nbsp;...Rock star status, the accidental journey to superyacht design and small talk covered, the conversation inevitably turns to superyachts. An expert of both exterior and interior design, it isn’t the general talk of how impressive, how large, or how luxurious any of the 70+ Disdale-designed vessels are that make his eyes light up. It’s quickly apparent that Disdale’s passion is in the small details: the seemingly inconsequential placement of a precious stone on a colossal bespoke piece of wall art, the creation of an opulent cabinet around a Zulu bracelet procured from the depths of Southern Africa, or the positioning of a fistfull of 17th century Dutch East India Trading Company coins floating in resin and acting as a table top.&nbsp;As we delve into the intricacies of design and the significance of interior decoration, Disdale heaves three hefty books to the table to pore over the unique nuances from yacht to yacht in more detail. We flick from page to page, with a story to tell for every image. “Which is your favourite?” I ask. Without a second's hesitation comes the answer. “It has to be&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Eclipse162.5m (533'2&quot;)">Eclipse</a>. She just is. Talk about carte blanche? She is carte blanche to the extreme.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/46521/image/large-1a2e57d78e193151ed8628372394b6e4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46521">&nbsp;With such custom projects, where do you start? Are you working around a particular wow factor?&nbsp;I start with designing something that you won’t get bored to death of. The ‘wow factor’ is the most boring thing in the world. So how do you make something that’s interesting, but that doesn’t aim to knock your eyes out? Where do you draw this line of restraint? I see it as it’s happening. It’s a process. I didn’t have any formal design training, but it’s not like you open a book and can learn these things… it’s what you see and what you feel.&nbsp;Can you give me a couple of examples of particularly bespoke features?I did a boat that was to do 50 knots at 50-metres, with so much unusual stuff on board. I found a company who could make a particular type of bamboo walling at a furniture fair in Manila, so the yard sent all of these aluminium honeycomb panels to the Philippines, the guy covered them in bamboo, then they came back. The import charge to bring the panels in was 10 times more than what the job was worth - but this company was the only one who could do it right. If you talk about bespoke, we’re probably more bespoke than most people. It’s what gives all of our projects their uniqueness. You can’t go out and buy these things, you have to dream it up and make it happen.We also have to make sure we consider the human element when we are designing. The thick, seascape oil painting at the head of the meeting table in one of my most important projects, for example, is behind the head of the owner. We commissioned that specifically. You cannot put a Picasso behind the main-man, he needs to be the most powerful in the room. It’s not just decorative, it’s much more than that. There is a balance in keeping all of these things together.&nbsp;There are currently 8 Disdale-designed 90+ metre superyachts in the global fleet. Are there any challenges involved in these large projects that do not appear on the smaller side of the scale?A key challenge is working to the fire regs that these big boats have to comply with. On a boat of a certain size you have to have a handrail on each side of the wide passageways. You can end up looking like a cruise ship very quickly, so on one of our projects we carved the handrail into the furniture along the wall. You can probably argue that this piece of handrail is the most expensive in the whole world. I mean, it’s made of semi-precious stone. It was not an easy thing to execute!&nbsp;No matter what the size, considering that human element of the design is always a challenge. Not just the aesthetic or the functionality, but the human response. Things like creating a passing space on stairs or in hallways, so the guests will not be faced with crew retracing their steps down the stairs to pass. It’s all of this stuff that makes or breaks a boat. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/46520/image/large-81a092fe969b9fd172444d991f25be8f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46520">Where do you get your inspiration?&nbsp;Inspiration is everywhere. It depends where you look. I took a photograph in India of a hut made of palm trees, and I thought that would be a fantastic window frame on board one of my projects. I’ve spent a lot of my life fishing and camping, and it’s a lovely, enchanting thing to sit around a fire in the evening. That inspired the fire pit on one of my largest projects. I don’t think anyone had tried putting a fire pit on a boat before!But things also come from experimenting, and I learned a lot from my boss in one of my first jobs after an engineering draughtsman. We would take over what was a butcher’s shop, and he would turn it into a man’s clothes shop on a budget. He would know what to keep, what you could exploit, what needed to change, in short, how to make everything look fantastic with no money. He was my education.&nbsp;Do you also find inspiration from other yacht designers?No, not really... I don’t really like looking at other people’s boats. And working alongside other designers is a bit of pain, isn’t it? We’re a bunch of prima donnas. It’s me too, but I’m always going to be the loser on the interior if the other is doing the exterior. There is often a bit of conflict. The space planning is the first thing that happens, so if I’m designing a dining room, it would be nice if the table was in the middle of the room facing a window. But if someone gives you their plan, with a dining room without a window in the middle of the room, what can you do? I ask, but the answer is usually no because it ruins whatever schematic theme or form flowing through the superstructure. Quite often it’s a compromise. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/46522/image/large-ecee02b8ebaa4596d2c3d2d1d779ed39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46522">The 90-metre project currently in build at Oceanco is designed with an Espen Øeino exterior, with yourself undertaking the interior. Due for delivery next year, she was started on speculation. What was the brief?&nbsp;The original brief for the 90m was that this boat was my boat. So basically, there was no brief! Oceanco completed the 85.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/101" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunrays85.5m (280'6&quot;)">Sunrays</a> which featured my interior design. They told me that they loved <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/101" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunrays85.5m (280'6&quot;)">Sunrays</a>, and they want to move on to the next one with me. So we did.&nbsp;Working to my own brief meant we were able to do it much quicker. There was no client to go back and forth with, and I didn’t have to present my scheme to anyone. Eventually a client did come along before completion and I do have a brief now, which is to carry on creating a Disdale boat!When we did the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels Tigre D'Or 5049.99m (164'0&quot;)">Tigre D’Or&nbsp;</a>series of boats with Amels, the owner of those projects had a completely different idea. He wouldn’t put those on the market until the pictures were on the wall and the china was in the cupboard. Then you can charge your premium, because people either love it or hate it. That was a successful way to do it, but a lot of these speculative builders want to take the job so far and then get a client in to take over the costs. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/46519/image/large-e66c2aa4b3b05cf552f8e15e610f19d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46519">How often do you get that opportunity for free reign?There’s no such thing as free reign in terms of general arrangement… When it comes to decoration, yes, but every client has his or her lifestyle story. I can come up with a suggestion, with my interpretation of what they want, but it’s not total free reign.&nbsp;Though the level of full control over the design is of course determined by the owner, when you are as a prolific designer as Disdale, it’s safe to say those most clients trust their chosen designer to translate their personality into the design with little to no guidance. With one of Disdale’s most high-profile projects, the client “didn’t see it until the fire was lit. ”Was that scary," I ask? “I was nervous, yeah,” he grins. “But he was happy with it.” A true testament to the skills Disdale has honed over the past 45 years as a yacht designer.&nbsp;On that note, what’s next for the studio of Terence Disdale Design? Will Disdale be handing his pencil to someone else in the near future? “At the moment the origin of all of our designs comes from that drawing board right there,” he answers, gesturing to the window-facing drawing board littered with huge sketches. “But I have a talented team which helps me to make all my visions a reality with commitment and new creativity. I cannot predict the future but I see no reason to hang up my pencil anytime soon. In the future it’s a bit of a dream to start up a bespoke furniture company, and in an ideal world it would be nice to have a total production boat with a yard, with a series of 12 or so, which I have generally avoided throughout my career. Insight: A conversation with Terence Disdale

Terence Disdale is the designer of the yacht, and just like her sistership <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4454" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Romea81.8m (268'4&quot;)">Romea</a>, is behind for both the interior and exterior of the project. The highly private yacht offers accommodation in four identical double guest cabins as well as a VIP forward on the main deck. One deck above is the owner’s stateroom, which offers 180-degree views forward.

Matsu&nbsp;changed hands in 2015 after which she was repainted from her all-white exterior to the current silver with black mast configuration we see today. Speaking of the studio’s participation in the event, Disdale says: “We decided to participate in view to spreading our reputation and we are keen to support the industry outside of the normal in-house typical journalism focusing on Fort Lauderdale, Monaco Yacht Show etc. We are all for making the industry more visible.”

OneOcean Port Vell

Launch of Otam’s first SD35 superyacht Gipsy

SYT visited the Otam shipyard in Genoa at the beginning of July for the launch of Otam’s very first SD35 superyacht. Named Gipsy, she measures 35.2 metres.

Yacht spotting in the South of France &amp; Portofino

Even when busy enjoying a relaxing holiday in the South of France, a bit of yacht spotting is never far from photographer, Tom van Oossanen’s, mind. Tom was treated to sights of several large superyachts, including the 81 metre Abeking &amp; Rasmussen built Kibo, and the 87 metre Lürssen built Ace.

SuperYacht Times Instagram hits 100K

She shares a similar exterior design with her sister ship, KIbo, both designed by Terence Disdale Design Ltd. Her 12 guests are accommodated across 6 guest suites and a forward facing full-beam owner’s suite on the upper deck. Some of her on board features include two cinemas; one in the main salon and another outside on bridge deck aft, and a spa saloon on the upper deck. 81.80m Abeking & Rasmussen superyacht Romea in Monaco

Imperial Yachts, the management company in charge of the charter operations for Abeking &amp; Rasmussen’s latest delivery, Romea, has released the first images of the yacht, displaying a tasteful interior decorated using a mix of natural and contemporary materials throughout her vast guest areas.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155966/image/large-28b4c5ac78349558f15517488fe0a15c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155966">Launched in February this year, Romea is designed by Terence Disdale, and shares a similar exterior design with her sistership, superyacht Kibo. First look onboard 81.8m superyacht Romea

She is a sistership to superyacht Kibo, seen in this photo, taken in the South of France in the summer of 2014. The 81.8 metre Kibo is designed by Terence Disdale Design and at the moment is the third largest yacht that has been delivered by A&amp;R. Kibo offers accommodation in four identical double guest cabins as well as a VIP forward on the main deck. One deck up, is the owner’s stateroom, which offers 180-degree views forward. Superyacht Kibo underway

The 81.80 metre five deck superyacht project Dartwo, built by German shipyard Abeking &amp; Rasmussen and launched early February, has been renamed Romea, and she is currently cruising in Norway, which means she is most probably delivered to her owners, although this has not yet been confirmed. The yacht left Germany yesterday.<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Se86qxSyBgI" width="560"></iframe>The yacht features both exterior and interior design by the world renowned studio Terence Disdale Design Ltd, and is a sistership to the 81 metre Kibo which was launched in 2014. She has been constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and has a gross tonnage of 2,300 GRT. Specific details about the yacht are still being kept private for the time being.By Maarten Janssen

81.8 metre superyacht Romea delivered

Y.CO has commented on the serious crew incident that took place earlier this month on board superyacht Kibo. The incident occurred onboard the 82 metre superyacht in Palma, Mallorca, on Sunday 3 May, resulting in a serious crew casualty.A crew member fell into the water whilst carrying out routine maintenance work outboard. He was recovered from the water by on-board divers and given CPR by the crew before being transported to a nearby hospital to receive emergency treatment. He continues to receive ongoing medical care and treatment for his injuries to this date.Y.CO states that they are providing post-incident support to all parties, and that they are working closely with the vessel’s insurers and Owners to coordinate the full coverage of immediate and ongoing medical expenses to the crew member involved, and financial assistance to enable his family to remain by his side.Gary Wright, Co-Founder and Chairman of Y.CO, said: “We are deeply saddened by this incident. As the yacht’s managers we are offering our full support to the crew member’s family, whom I have met with personally. Out of respect for all those involved, including the Owner and those crew aboard the vessel, we ask the media and the industry not to draw conclusions or to speculate until the investigation is complete. This incident is a harsh reminder of the dangers that all mariners face daily and why our focus remains on promoting and prioritising safety onboard the vessels we work with. At this difficult time our thoughts remain with the crew member and his family."The Cayman Islands Flag State is now conducting a full inquiry into the incident, and a Cayman Islands surveyor has been appointed to the case.

Y.CO statement following serious crew casualty on superyacht Kibo

The result of a collaboration with Y.CO, German shipyard Abeking and Rasmussen, and British studio Andrew Winch Designs, the superyacht project Intensity is currently for sale. After introducing the project to the industry, Y.CO. has released her asking price, starting at a cool €126,000,000.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/154435/image/large-2916ffa4b8bb6b12a8393d4481fb3261.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/154435">Measuring 88.8 metres in length with a beam of 12.6 metres and a draft of 3.45 metres, she will accommodate up to 14 guests on board over seven spacious staterooms, as well as a crew of 23. One of her most unique features is the extensive use of glass in her superstructure, which will flood the interiors with an abundance of natural light as well as create the illusion of even more space to her voluminous living areas. Her design inspiration was reportedly taken from the Caribbean.“The striking tri-deck superstructure, incorporating elegant curves and glass wrapping, appears iridescent in the reflection of the water and sunlight. Welcoming, spacious decks provide the perfect environment to entertain guests and relax in the warmth of the sun. New photos of superyacht Dartwo

Earlier this summer we already published photos from the initial cruise of Abeking &amp; Rasmussen’s latest superyacht <a href="#managed-by-application" target="_blank" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4094">Kibo</a>, throughout Scandinavia. The yacht has now arrived in the Med, and SYT's trusted photographer Giovanni Romero was there to capture her arrival into Gibraltar. Abeking &amp; Rasmussen has announced the launch of hull number 6497.
