Verges Design (Company)">J.G. With regards to the exterior, the owner wanted to enhance the yacht’s modern lines with a cleaner, sleeker look.Layout:&nbsp;Without changing the yacht’s volumes, the layout was to be optimised. (Company)">Nauta Design</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2548" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cornelsen & Partner Yacht Consulting GmbH (Company)">Cornelsen &amp; Partner</a>, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a> to help bring his vision to life. The team started off by carefully removing the yacht’s original guest interior, the Fibre Mechanics team then began the modification work to the bulkhead structures in the owner’s cabin, the removal of the cuddy on the aft deck and the enlargement of the 11 portholes in the guest accommodation. &nbsp;&nbsp;In brief, the key changes to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="G239.0m (127'11&quot;)Vitters Shipyard2009">G2</a> during her rebuild included the following:<ul><li>Two large skylights were cut into the roof of the main saloon, adding natural light into the yacht’s interior. A single pane of tempered glass was mounted lengthwise on the deckhouse’s central longitudinal beam to make the skylight appear to be divided into two sections when viewed from below.</li><li>The hallway mast was previously hidden in a cupboard which made the hallway seem very long. The cupboard was removed to reveal the mast to help proportion the hall and add a ‘marine’ style to the space.&nbsp;</li><li>The upper and lower parts of the saloon were originally very separate. To open up the area and connect the saloon to the dining area, the high backing on some furnishings was removed and a transparent balustrade was installed. The TV area benefitted from the addition of a U-shaped sofa and a fully equipped bar was installed to the starboard part of the upper saloon.&nbsp;</li><li>The cuddy was removed on the aft deck and extensive composite works were carried out to create a new aft deck layout with a flush open deck feel, complete with new sun pads and an extended guest outdoor dining area.</li><li>The superstructure and rig were resprayed metallic Sandelwood Silver.</li><li>40% of the deck was replaced with new teak with all the caulking removed and changed from black to grey.</li><li>The original 11 portlights in the guest areas were made larger to brighten the accommodation.&nbsp;</li><li>All original guest accommodation was removed and replaced with a modern and contemporary interior featuring light bleached oak designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta Design</a> and constructed by RQI.&nbsp;</li><li>To enlarge the owner’s cabin, the owner chose a new layout that transformed a portside guest cabin and its ensuite bathroom into a children's cabin. This required the structural bulkhead in the owner’s cabin to be moved to increase the footprint of the area.&nbsp;</li><li>The bed arrangements were rearranged in both the starboard and portside guest cabin. All ensuite bathrooms were also updated.</li><li>The bilge and fire systems were replaced throughout the yacht - a complicated process involving the removal of tanks and large elements of the crew accommodation during installation.</li><li>New Amtico flooring, fridges and a floating carbon staircase were added to the crew area.</li><li>The 10-year class special survey was completed.</li><li>Upgraded fresh water system provided potable water and decreased the use and necessity of plastic bottles.</li><li>The shore power converter and main switchboard dief hardware were upgraded.</li><li>New carbon fibre EC6 rigging was installed and sailing instruments were upgraded.</li><li>AVIT, NAVCOM and Communication Systems were replaced and upgraded.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/88531/image/large-4cfb4ebc697cf698bd6b49131c3aadd4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/88531"></li></ul> The outcomeOver 120 of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a>’ in-house and highly skilled tradespeople worked for 11 months on refitting <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="G239.0m (127'11&quot;)Vitters Shipyard2009">G2</a>. The final outcome is a transformed high-performance sailing yacht with more open visuals and new sources of natural light. The saloon is now spacious and features new furniture from top brands such as Cassina, Flexform and Knoll. It is no secret that Nick Edmiston is a fan of classic yachts. He has played a central role in the sale and refit of several notable vintage motor yachts over the past 20 years, including&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2248" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue Bird31.59m (103'8&quot;)">Blue Bird</a>&nbsp;(1938), <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)">Nahlin</a>&nbsp;(1930),<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">&nbsp;Malahne</a> (1937), and now 71-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida 1929</a>. Earlier this year, she was delivered to her latest owner following an extensive 18-month restoration at the Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, UK. SuperYacht Times talked with Nick Edmiston and broker Alex Busher, who acted as liaison between Edmiston and the new owner, about the challenges associated with restoring and managing classic yachts. We began by asking how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida</a> came to change hands in 2016.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41790/image/large-3fd05144629a31880d61507719312e72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41790">Nick: I’d known the yacht for years, ever since she was called <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Sarina</a> and owned by Loel Guinness, who spared no expense to make sure she remained in excellent shape. The last owner had been hanging onto her with the thought of taking a long cruise, but that never happened. After several years when she was effectively mothballed, he decided to sell her and we brokered the deal with the new owner. Like all restorations, the worklist grew as the project progressed, but he was determined to bring her back into top condition with a view to chartering and taking her around the world.&nbsp;Alex: The restoration was really needed. She’d undergone a previous refit in Turkey in 2000, which hadn’t addressed some of the major issues. After a survey of the hull, we very quickly realised the underwater profile would have to be stripped down to the frames for the first time in almost 90 years. The fact she was still intact is a testament to Germany’s shipbuilding prowess, but we ended up replacing the tanks and 60 percent of the hull, using over 100 tons of marine-grade steel in the process. At one point there were 70 welders working on her: when the old funnel was removed and engine room gutted, you could look down through the decks and see the bottom of the dry dock.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41793/image/large-8c32b0bf15e6a5c652a2cda1ff3183d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41793">Why the decision to go to Pendennis for the refit?Alex: Several reasons. Besides having a slot available, Pendennis has experience of refitting other classic motor yachts, including<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">&nbsp;Malahne</a> and<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/254" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fair Lady42.0m (137'10&quot;)">&nbsp;Fair Lady</a>. They had also completed a short refit of the yacht in 2011 when she was called <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Dona Amélia</a>, so had a lot of prior knowledge. Brexit had just kicked off and sterling had taken a hit, so the exchange rate was a consideration. Another factor was that the yard is very discreet and a bit off-radar down in Falmouth, which suited the owner who wished to maintain his privacy.&nbsp;Considering the high cost of restoration and maintenance, what kind of owner decides to invest in a classic yacht?Nick: &nbsp;Someone who knows how to appreciate tradition and elegance; someone who leads a very stylish lifestyle and has a passion for maintaining an asset of historical significance. That’s not everyone by any means. And once they’ve spent the money, they’re not going to recover it immediately, if at all. In the long-term, the paint job might be a bit cheaper as you don’t have a high-gloss metallic finish, but they require constant attention and tend to have big crews, so that’s an added cost. There’s definitely more work involved and you have to have a loyal crew prepared to roll up their sleeves and get the job done. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/41792/image/large-8bca09e70d639b0d3767e1d759409cde.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41792">Alex: With classic yachts, it’s all about their history: the stories behind the owners and the places they’ve been to. We tend to think of explorers as a new trend, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida</a> was originally built for Fleischmann with an 8,000-mile range for exploring the Pacific and was named after the native Haida people of Alaska and British Columbia. The current owner had been following her for the last 15 years or so, and it was either this yacht or none at all. He wanted character and soul, not a replica or a new build. It’s a bit like living in a stately home rather than a brand new hotel, which is why he wanted to keep the original Krupp engines, the beating heart of the vessel and the oldest working diesels on any yacht today. They have no gearbox, so to reverse they have to be stopped and restarted using the old telegraphs still linking the bridge to the engine room. Stripping and rebuilding them with custom-made parts was a huge job in itself.&nbsp;How did you decide on Adam Lay for the new interior design?Alex: The owner had very clear ideas of what he wanted and had spent a lot of time researching online and in magazines. He put together four large mood books of his own and toured antique fairs all over Europe for period accessories, which is still ongoing. But we needed someone to fine-tune his ideas and bring it all together to produce a traditional décor with a nod to contemporary lifestyles. Adam had been involved in the refit of the J-Class&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour</a>&nbsp;and is a very good listener. The owner liked his low-key style and attention to detail, but what swung it was when Adam started sketching in front of him. He was very impressed with his draughtsmanship skills.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41791/image/large-35a900be03ce0739b16f2783f969fabb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41791">What concessions were made to modernity during the refit?Alex: Although the owner wanted a sympathetic restoration, he was aware of modern charter requirements. So a hot tub was added on the top deck and a hammam spa on the lower deck, the galley was upgraded, new AC installed, along with new custom tenders [restored to their original position amidships] and new cranes for launching them. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida 1929&nbsp;</a>is the only classic motor yacht of her size available for charter with accommodation for 12 guests and a private owner’s deck. There was a sister ship to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shemara64.68m (212'2&quot;)">Shemara</a> that went to Japan, and another lovely old motor yacht that once belonged to the Courtauld textile family that went to Sierra Leone as a presidential yacht. Sadly the former was broken up and the latter sank before my people could get to them. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)">Nahlin</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">Malahne</a> probably wouldn’t be around today if I hadn’t stepped in. The challenge is finding the right owner in time and then a yard with the wherewithal to restore them, which is not cheap by any means. Ultimately, you have to have a passion for it.

Haida 1929: talking classic yachts with Edmiston

Jonathan Beckett is the man at the helm of one of the most trusted superyacht brokerage firms in the world: Burgess. Joining the late company founder, Nigel Burgess, in the early 80s, it was not the desire to sell big boats that drew Beckett to the world of selling superyachts, but rather a love for sailing. Indulging in this passion fresh out of high school sailing on 55’ Sparkman &amp; Stephens ketch in the Caribbean, when Jonathan returned to Europe, he quickly realised that the yacht life was the only life for him and the brokerage world beckoned.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/32225/image/large-f3c4249ec1816ea586b1340d7ee9e98c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32225">Regardless of a deep-seated passion for sailing from the CEO - a passion which was very much shared with the founder of the company - unsurprisingly, sailing yachts are in the vast minority of Burgess’ sales and charter deals. This, however, does not concern Beckett. In fact, contrary to the widespread belief that the sailing yacht market is in dire straits, Beckett notes that interest in this specialised sector is growing. In fact, he notes, it is the sailing yachts rather than the motor yachts that are really shaking things up in the industry: “Perhaps more so than motor yachts, a number of sailing yachts will also go down in the history books of yachting for being game changers,” he says. “Whether it’s the 88-metre&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)">Maltese Falcon</a>, the 106-metre&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.0m (347'9&quot;)">Black Pearl&nbsp;</a>or the 142.8-metre&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4450" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sailing Yacht A142.81m (468'6&quot;)">Sailing Yacht A</a>, these yachts are visionary design statements which have stopped the superyacht industry in its tracks – and that doesn’t happen very easily!”Here we hear more about Beckett’s insight into the sailing yacht market, and the future of the Burgess brand.&nbsp;You are CEO at Burgess and very much a client facing broker, spending the majority of your time actually selling yachts. Is there such a thing as a typical deal?&nbsp;I am very much a travelling salesman - selling yachts and selling the Burgess brand. On average, I travel twice a week. Just this week, for example, I was in Monaco last weekend, London on Monday and Tuesday, Amsterdam on Wednesday, London again on Thursday and then Singapore Friday. And now I will travel on to Australia on Sunday! But that is what I do.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/34966/image/large-445c229206a36a6bbdb7acd9f2a6e76e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34966">I believe I learned the trade from the best: Nigel Burgess. We worked together for 11 years before ‎he died. He quickly taught me that the most important thing with any client is face time. You have to have face time to build a relationship - and this is a business that is all about relationships. A typical deal is like combining a marathon run with an obstacle course - all conducted on paper-thin ice! Joking aside, a typical deal will be one where the seller feels he isn't getting enough, the buyer feels he is paying a bit too much and the broker is very carefully trying to pull both sides together‎.After almost four decades working in the industry, what are your thoughts on the sailing yacht market and how it has changed over time?The sailing yacht market - meaning new construction, sales and charter - has always been a much smaller but much more specialised market than the motor yacht market. There are more than 10 large motor yachts to every large sailing yacht‎. It would be rare for a large motor yacht client (purchase or charter) to ‘switch’ to a sailing yacht, although it has been known to happen! Sailing yacht owners, buyers and charterers tend to be quite experienced sailing people who have a keen interest and knowledge of sailing yachts and the sea - and are passionate about sailing.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/7884/image/large-3ff44ce0b580955bb7b80b9160947086.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7884">If anything, I think that there is more interest in sailing yachts now than there was back in my early days in 1980/1. There was a revolution of new modern designs, easy to handle sailing systems and much more modern accommodation in the 80s and 90s through to the present day. And, with this, came the opening of quite a number of new specialised sailing yacht shipyards taking centre stage, such as Perini Navi, Vitters, Alloy Yachts, Fitzroy – and, of course, the modernisation of such iconic shipyards as Royal Huisman and Jongert. Regrettably, Alloy and Fitzroy are no longer with us but they were incredibly prolific in the early years and were very much responsible for whetting the appetites of clients to build modern, aesthetically pleasing, high-performance sailing yachts with a level of luxury that hadn’t been seen on sailing yachts before.Having been part of Burgess since its early days, tell us about one of the most memorable deals you’ve closed?&nbsp;I am in my 38th year here at Burgess. In that time you might think that I've seen it all - but I am certain that I haven't. Not at all! My most memorable deals are not really our largest sales - but these ones were special for me: the 71.1-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Sarina</a> (now Haida 1929), sold in 1981; the 57-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/236" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fleurtje57.0m (187'0&quot;)">Argonaftis</a> (now Fleurtje), sold in 1984; the 86-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/297" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kingdom 5KR86.0m (282'2&quot;)">Nabila</a> (now Kingdom 5KR), sold in 1987, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)">Maltese Falcon</a>, sold in 2009.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/19605/image/large-b8d86c2ff7d9819162f88a83347a836e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19605">The story of the 1987 sale of Nabila to Donald Trump is very well known, coming in at $14 million more than the previous largest sale of Burgess. How did this deal solidify Burgess’ position as a leader in the sale of large yachts?&nbsp;This was an exciting deal - and a very exciting time for this company and for the industry at ‎large. But actually, she was not only the largest sale by Burgess at the time, but she was $14 million more than any previous brokerage transaction ever. This really was the advent of superyachts as we know them today.&nbsp;It was particularly pleasing because I remember cutting Donald Trump's name out of a newspaper here in London‎ and adding him to our client list (which probably only numbered 300 people in those days!). A year later we closed the largest yacht sale ever with him! Nabila was an iconic and very famous yacht back in those days and Donald was a ‘self-promoter’ - so the publicity surrounding this sale and ongoing ownership was something else! We retained the management of the yacht - renamed Trump Princess&nbsp;- and had monthly meetings with him in New York. We sold the yacht on four years later to HRH Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz-Al-Saud from Saudi Arabia, who still owns the yacht today.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/18015/image/large-48ee854a91ce677af97627e2dbd7c7d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/18015">There have, of course, been other significant milestones, which all solidify our leading position. One could never have predicted 30 years ago that the industry would evolve in quite the way it has and we have been involved with a number of ground-breaking new builds as owners’ project managers over the last few years: the world’s largest yacht, the 180-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4638" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azzam180.61m (592'7&quot;)">Azzam</a>; the world’s largest yacht by gross tonnage, the 156-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)">Dilbar</a>; and the largest yacht built to date in the Netherlands, the 110-metre Jubilee. These are very technically complex projects and I am immensely proud of our in-house team of naval architects and specialised marine/electrical engineers who carry these challenging builds from clean sheet of paper to delivery. &nbsp; <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/28769/image/large-dc8a0d4c8acedaa088c81180fefae172.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28769">$30 million in the 80s was an almost unprecedented price for a yacht, though we have since seen prices in yachting rise almost exponentially. Some think the industry is effectively pricing ourselves out of business. Do you see this as an issue?&nbsp;$30 million in 1987 was a record-breaking price - almost double the value of any previous brokerage deal. So it was a big deal. Today $30 million will still buy you a nice yacht - but not a ‘top of the market’ yacht. Prices have risen enormously - but then so has the size and complexity of yachts. The top yachts today are truly floating palaces on the water with extraordinary features and very complex systems. To break it down, in 1987, $30 million bought you the biggest and best yacht in the world. In 2018, you would need to pay in the region of $600 - 700 million to buy the biggest and best yacht in the world… I’m not sure the pricing is an ‘issue’ rather than an organic progression as the vessels themselves have gotten more complex with extremely high standards.&nbsp;You are President and founding member of the Large Yacht Brokers Association, as well former President and board member of MYBA. What is the importance of such organisations?&nbsp;What we have learned from trade associations - be it MYBA or LYBRA - is that they bring industry players together to produce industry standards - such as the standard MYBA Charter Agreement and the standard MYBA Sale &amp; Purchase Agreement. We also discuss common issues, and they create a forum for grievances to be aired. LYBRA is an association of the larger yacht brokerage companies - and the demonstrable benefit here is having company owners and/or CEOs all sitting around the table together - getting to know each other well - and having the confidence to discuss ‘big picture’ industry issues that affect all of us.You’ve talked previously about families with young children being the key demographic that yachting should market to, though this is a decidedly long-term plan for longevity. What can we do in the short term?&nbsp;This is a very good question and no one has the definitive answer. Charter is most definitely a great entry gateway into yachting, and the number of people who can afford to charter but have no clue it even exists as a vacation must be encouraged to try it! We are members of the Superyacht Life Foundation, which is all about promoting the lifestyle of yachting rather than promoting‎ yacht purchase or yacht charter specifically.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/8710/image/large-36a1d64cfe4989718de55a8c0818f001.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/8710">It would be nice if we could extend the cruising seasons… but I don't see this happening anytime soon. The opening up of new destinations for chartering is something many of us are working on and is a very interesting challenge. It’s also a daunting one as market forces are quite entrenched. With environmental issues likely to be at the forefront for some years to come, we could well also see a resurgence of heightened interest in sailing yachts from charterers and there are also some exceptional purchase opportunities currently on the market at very interesting price levels. At the moment, for example, we are listing the stunning 90-metre three-masted schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Athena90.0m (295'3&quot;)">Athena</a> and the 54.6-metre modern classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2411" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marie54.64m (179'3&quot;)">Marie</a> for sale and charter, as well as the 65.3-metre vintage schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creole65.3m (214'3&quot;)">Creole</a> for charter. &nbsp;&nbsp;Do you think consolidation is the answer to progressing the superyacht industry?&nbsp;There is room for everyone in this industry - but the way we do business will change. When change starts to kick in, it will happen quickly - and we are right on the cusp of that now. I am certain that we will see a lot of consolidation as we move ahead… it just makes sense. In 7 years time when we look back to today, the players will be different and the landscape will be different. This is an exciting time for Burgess and for the industry - and I am really looking forward to the challenges ahead.What do the next 10 years look like for Burgess?The next 10 years at Burgess are looking good! ‎Will I still be here? Definitely! But I will be in a different role - which I see as more of a guidance and mentoring role. The future of Burgess belongs to the next generation and it is our job to ensure a careful handing down of roles and responsibilities. At Burgess, we have a lot of young people - many of whom have already been with us for quite a long time (for example 35-year-olds who have been with us for 10+ years and 45-year-olds who have been with us for between 15-22 years). These young people are well trained, experienced and fiercely loyal, and it is going to be a pleasure to watch them take over the reigns of the company in the years to come. Following the successful delivery of the refit of Dona Amélia, Pendennis Plus has this week completed a further large yacht refit project, the 62.23 metre Feadship Virginian. Coincidentally Virginian was also one of the first refits undertaken by Devonport Yachts in their Plymouth facility. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138621/image/large-63e43ff13c7ebb4fae689ded19358f53.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138621">Built in 1990, the Feadship arrived at Pendennis at the beginning of November following the departure of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290">Dona Amélia</a>. The works undertaken on <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/225">Virginian</a> included general maintenance work, minor interior modifications and an annual survey alongside a full topside repaint and installation of new Naiad Zero Speed stabilisers. Pendennis Plus completes refit of superyacht Virginian

Pendennis Plus was delighted to have been commissioned to undertake a four month refit of one of the world’s most iconic gentleman’s motor yachts Dona Amélia (previously known as Haida G). At 71 metres she is the largest yacht to have been refitted in Pendennis’ 23 year history, and the first undertaken in Falmouth by the newly rebranded Pendennis Plus (ex. Devonport Yachts). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137981/image/large-63c5f40a9460d6c9bfd578496e526d94.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137981">Dona Amélia’s programme of works focused on routine maintenance including an engineering survey, service and renovation of her original 1928 Krupp Germania Werft main Engines, overhaul of her generators, AC, water makers, thrusters, hydraulics, windlass. Alongside this Pendennis Plus revitalised the teak decks and exterior brightwork and upgraded the AV system, galley equipment and Jacuzzi. The yacht’s tanks also underwent maintenance, which involved no less that 15 tanks throughout (fuel, water, grey and black). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137982/image/large-e592913279667fc376d47cf6d33eb617.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137982">Andrew Wilson (Fred), Chief Officer of Dona Amélia, has fond memories of their time in Cornwall: “It is always sad to leave, especially after all the warmth and hospitality that has been shown to the crew of Dona Amélia. Superyacht Dona Amélia leaves Pendennis after successful refit

Ocean Independence's Peter Hürzeler has announced the sale of the classic superyacht Haida G. Alex Busher of Edmiston represented the buyer. Haida G was formerly known as Rosenkavalier, and is one of the most beautiful classic yachts in the world, a magnificent motor yacht from the golden era (1929) of private yachting. Two years of restoration brought Haida G back to her former glory.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/135635/image/large-d3de2f70b96d76e17ea2d85e5ea3537a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127835">Even though the meticulous refit maintained her traditional style, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290">Haida G</a> is equipped with the latest in HiFi, TV and communications systems. Haida G can accomodate 12 guests for cruising, in seven luxurious guest cabins. The master cabin is located on the bridge deck, and features a delightful private salon, which opens up to the boat deck. On the main deck, there is a large main salon and a cosy library. Superyacht Haida G sold by Ocean Independence and Edmiston

The 71.1m Haida G, originally Haida, was built at Krupp Germania Werft in Kiel in 1929 for millionaire yeast producer Max C. Fleischmann (1877-1952) following plans drafted by the New York naval architects Cox and Stevens and today, 80 years after her launch, she still graces the ocean with her unique style following an impeccable restoration. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129410/image/large-ebb7801ef3acbb73bed0f5eb823e6fe8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129410">Haida, as she was then known, was constructed to be especially strong for long scientific, fishing, and pleasure cruises in the Pacific waters off the Californian coast. Using the latest technology of the time, the vessel was equipped with the twin diesel engines that still propel her to this day. Her fuel capacity of 150 tons allowed a range of nearly 8000 nautical miles enabling her to travel from San Francisco to Singapore non-stop. After completion in 1929, and following a passage from Germany via New York and through the Panama Canal, her owner berthed Haida at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, California. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129411/image/large-9485a1df9b58918ea5de13d4fd2eab32.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129411">As with many of his yachts before and after, Max C. Fleischmann named his ship after the native tribe of Queen Charlotte Island whose seafaring skills he admired so much. Fleischmann, who had a reputation of being slightly eccentric, had the beautiful ship painted black. After more than ten joyous years at sea, Haida found a new mission when Mr. Fleischmann sold the yacht to the US Navy in October 1940. The ship was completely refurbished and began a new duty as a naval vessel: the bowsprit was removed, radar was installed, and a 3.5” gun was mounted on the forecastle. Warren A. Cabral, who served on board the ship, recently said he could still remember how the exquisite wood panelling was roughly covered with grey paint. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129412/image/large-fbc596df9b7b90e4ef7bb4dd93906bcd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129412">Under the name USS Argus, identification number “PY14”, the yacht protected the coast in the Patrol Force of the 12th Naval District out of San Francisco. She was briefly lent to the United States Geodetic Survey, returning to the Navy after eight months. On October 29th, 1944 the Argus rescued the shipwrecked sailors from the Liberty vessel John A. Johnson, sunk in the Pacific by a submarine. Argus was decommissioned in 1946 and purchased by a private owner who restored her to her former glory as a pleasure craft. Renamed Sarina, she was owned by the Egyptian cotton magnate Maurice Ada and spent a number of years in Alexandria. During a political disturbance, her owner moved the yacht to the South of France. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129413/image/large-cb2c86229437d84b0d1705ec6f402da4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129413">A happy new era began when, after a year in the hands of American industrialist Larry Green, she came into the ownership of British Member of Parliament, Loel Guinness in 1969. He kept Sarina for more than ten years and spared no expense to see that the yacht remained in excellent shape. In 1979 Guinness’ health forced him to sell the beautiful vessel to film producer Robert Stigwood. Stigwood redecorated the interior in an English country house style. Also around this time a false second funnel was mounted that characterized Sarina’s appearance for many years. The yacht was the centre of Stigwood’s social life, undertaking long voyages throughout Europe and the Caribbean. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129414/image/large-f155b8dbc2f61e43ee984e106868fc62.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127835">In 1981 Sarina was sold yet again. Her new Greek owner renamed her Rosenkavalier, after the opera by Richard Strauss. In 1988 Rosenkavalier, like many other classic yachts at that time, was acquired by a Japanese owner. She made the journey to Yokusaka on her own keel, still driven by her original 1929 diesel engines. The ship remained with the Isaka family of Yokohama until 1992, when a Greek yachtsman, bought Rosenkavalier. In 1999, a new owner acquired the vessel, enchanted by her heritage and striving to reconnect her with her origins, she was re-christened Haida G. The renovation began with a refit of the original main engines, which were completely disassembled and overhauled. The interior was entirely stripped and reusable parts carefully reinstalled. The naked hull was sandblasted, and 120 tons of steel replaced. Charter Special II: Finest 40m+ superyachts at the Genoa Charter Show (1)

Last June, the very famous vintage yacht <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290">Haida G</a> (ex Rosenkavalier) made a stop in Amico &amp; Co for some refit and maintenance works. <img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122867/image/large-bc10e80536e3fcb02b3eeddc9a68390c.jpg" alt="" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122867"> <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290">Haida G</a> was built in 1929 by Krupp Germania Werft and nowadays is managed by Ocean Independence, which choose Amico &amp; Co for some specialized maintenance jobs before starting a new busy summer season. 71mt length, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290">Haida G</a> was hauled in the Amico &amp; Co covered dry-dock to execute some maintenance works such as hull and superstructure painting, side boarding ladders refit, external furnishing, generators overhaul and the installation of some brand new SAT-NAV antennas and much more in just 40 days ! In the same month Amico &amp; Co launched <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276">Shamrock V</a>, a J Class dated 1930 commissioned by Sir Thomas Lipton to take part in his very last challenge at America’s Cup.
