Vasco Buonpensiere, Sales and Marketing Director of Cantiere Delle Marche, has reported that the company closed 2017 on a high, with the deliveries of two new superyachts, their involvement in two second-hand deals of Darwin 86 and 96 motor yachts, and the sales of four new motor yachts in the past 6 months alone.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28638/image/large-cb1ab541c697d0e875770f8a807522cb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28638">The yard delivered their largest yacht to date, the 33.83-metre Nauta Air 111 Hyhma, as well as the 31.1-metre Darwin 102 Galego, but the true testament of their recent success are the sales of their four new motor yachts with a length between 39.5 and 41 metres. The company has now a total of eight yachts on order, including the 42.8-metre&nbsp;K42 that will be launched in around a year’s time and will be the flagship of the company.Bruno Piantini, Managing Director of CDM, comments on the growing success of the Italian yard: “In 2017 we have achieved a Production Value growth of 18% (with an average annual growth rate of the period 2013-2017 of 50%). We have completed the construction of a new shed of about 1,200 sqm, where we are building a 42.8-metre motor yacht with a volume of just under 500GT, and a new warehouse area of about 400 sqm is underway.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/19087/image/large-85b15b912184bc0af3a97572f94b06e2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19087"> Speaking of the future growth of the company CEO of CDM, Ennio Cecchini, clearly states the brands’ intentions when it comes to expanding the size range of the yard: “In terms of size of the yachts, we confirm that we are not going to build bigger than 45 metres or 499GT. We are not interested to enter into a very cramped arena where there are a few shipyards leading the market and a lot more which are struggling to build one unit per year - in the good years.”Cecchini goes on, stating that the core of their business is, and will continue to be, quality and the quest for perfection, and not a race to build larger vessels or, indeed, an unmanageable quantity of vessels. He says, “In terms of our facilities, we have just added one 61-metre shed to the existing one and – as we do not want to deliver more than three to four yachts per year – we do not need more. Once again I repeat our mantra: we want to become better and better, not bigger and bigger! And let me add: we want to keep on having a relaxed and enjoyable quality of life, too!”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/11880/image/large-aea174fd3db3c99ad4107d4f0f7c4cb6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/11880"> While not many details are released about the new projects at the yard, Cecchini has shown particular interest and anticipation in regards to a new 40-metre explorer yacht that will mark the first yacht in a brand new CDM range. According to Cecchini, the vessel will introduce a new way of looking at tender operations and the dimensions of tenders used on board.&nbsp;More information will be released regarding the developments at CDM as they come available.&nbsp;

Strong order book for CDM with 4 new superyachts sold in 6 months

Having taken to the water last year at Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) in Ancona, Italy, the shipyard’s fourth motor yacht in its elegant Nauta Air range has now been handed over to her owner and will be cruising the world under the name Hyhmä.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28638/image/large-cb1ab541c697d0e875770f8a807522cb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28638">For this fourth project in the line, Dutch studio Vripack were chosen for their naval architecture know-how while the Milanese designers at Nauta Yachts are behind both the exterior and interior design of Hyhmä. Built for an experienced yachtsman who will be using the yacht to travel through the Northwest Passage as well as extensive cruising on both sides of the Atlantic, Hyhmä’s stylish go-anywhere profile that makes her look at home in both French Riviera marinas as well as deep ocean swell.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28639/image/large-ccabd4c66a29b60d644f1e086dec5ce5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28639"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/28703/image/large-4ddfc047152c9038b8581295d49d9689.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28703">“With M/Y Hyhmä we have reached a perfect formula, merging northern European engineering with Italian style and flexibility in managing a multicultural team of highly skilled professionals,” says Vasco Buonpensiere, Co-founder and Sales and Marketing Director at CdM. “With a common target represented by the will of allowing this very special owner/friend to cruise the Northwest Passage and documenting the marine wildlife during the trip, we have created an explorer vessel which – as nature does – combines beauty and strength seamlessly in perfect harmony,” he continues.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28704/image/large-41100364abadb7f5aa9bf405578b07ef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28704">For a safe and enjoyable experience at sea, the Nauta Air 111 is built with a solid steel hull measuring between 20 and 22 mm from the waterline level and below. As this will very much be used as a family boat, the interior has been designed around an open family plan, but designers Mario Pedol and Massimo Gino also kept future charter use in mind with clever separations in the accommodation areas and an easy-to-remember flow throughout the four guest decks on board.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28648/image/large-34e7e0a706aca6cad1fa012272c44e66.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28648"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/28650/image/large-fa2de2d4868f0b2bb30f9617ef14129d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28650">On a technical level, Hyhmä’s globe-trotting intentions are echoed in the impressive cruising specifications that come along with this pocket explorer’s credentials. Two economical Caterpillar C18 heavy-duty engines have been installed that can push the yacht up to a respectable speed of 13 knots when needed. Cantiere delle Marche delivers 33m superyacht Hyhmä

Italian yard Cantiere delle Marche has gone from strength to strength since its foundation in 2010, building a reputation as one of the world’s leading builders of explorer yachts. We recently sat down with co-founder and CEO, Ennio Cecchini, to discuss the secret to their success, plans for the future, and just what an explorer yacht really is.

Having been building yachts and ships for nearly 25 years, Ennio Cecchini is just as passionate about yacht construction as he was in 1993 when he delivered his first project. Cecchini has owned a number of yards throughout the years, gaining experience in building a wide range of vessels, from tankers and passenger vessels to luxury superyachts, and this experience has translated to ensure the huge success that Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) has proved to be.

“My first yacht in steel and aluminium was a 26 metre full displacement Navetta and at the time she was a real one off, as the market wasn’t ready for full displacement yachts,” says Cecchini. “That was my first experience in yachting.” That first build, at his family yard CNC, was quickly followed by a 23 metre sloop sailing yacht in aluminium in 1994 before the yard’s focus then shifted to the commercial sector between 1995 and 2005, with the Cecchini family also buying Cantiere Navale di Pesaro (CNP), which specialised in commercial vessels up to 125 metres, in 1999.

In 2004, Cecchini first met Vasco Buonpensiere, now Sales and Marketing Director at CdM. Working on a new expedition-style project Buonpensiere urged Cecchini to get involved, following a gut instinct that explorer yachts would be big in the yachting industry in the foreseeable future. “He told me, ‘Ennio, we have this special project that’s like a tug, but it’s the future. It’s an expedition boat,’ and I told him my answer was no. I had just signed a new contract that would keep me busy for the next four years.” But Buonpensiere was not to take no for an answer. “After five meetings we decided to start a new venture: the Naumachos line, which was built at CNP.” Success came fast, with the subsequent quick sale of six Naumachos 82 models. In 2006 the decision was made to sell the CNP yard.

By 2010 Cecchini was ready to get back into the world of new build construction and made the decision to found CdM, having identified a niche for smaller explorer yachts. After developing a range of 25 to 35 metre steel and aluminium explorer yachts, the yard was founded in February 2010 and just two months later the first new build contract was signed for a Darwin 86 model. “When I sold that boat I spoke to Vasco and said, ‘please come with me on this adventure,’ and by September 2010, six months after we had founded the yard, he had joined the team.” Interest in their yachts snowballed and that first sale was followed in quick succession by other orders. Together the duo has built an incredibly successful brand: “After six years in business we have delivered 12 yachts with another six in build,” says Cecchini proudly.

Despite founding the yard in the heart of the fallout of the Global Financial Crisis, Cecchini feels lucky to have always secured enough orders to have kept the yard busy. “Fortunately we have sold every year an increasing number of yachts, delivering a maximum of three custom yachts per year and although we began in a difficult time for the industry we have never felt the negatives of that.” Much of this is down to the popular niche that the yard is building in, and their foresight that explorer style yachts would prove so popular. “At our first boat show, people saw our boats and, thinking they were strange were interested in looking around them,” he says. “Today our brand is in a popular niche market that continues to grow – if you look at other shipyards, lots of them have an explorer model on offer now!”

With so many ‘explorer yacht’ designs now flooding the market, an all-important question posed to Cecchini is what makes a true expedition yacht? Design, the construction quality, and the usability are all important considerations but it’s very difficult to have a definitive checklist. “The naval architecture is the most important thing,” he says. “In my opinion, the heart of the explorer boat is the engine room – for this reason I will always start an on board visit in the engine room – and the quality and design of the hull is also critical.” Ensuring a hull that is sufficiently thick enough to cope with a wide range of environments is key and it is crucial to consider how the yacht will be used and whether it meets all those requirements. Simple things like ensuring enough storage space to support long range trips (a minimum range of 4,500 nm), as well as double ups of all key equipment to ensure sufficient backups if anything should fail when away from yachting hubs.

The yard is always looking to build on the footholds they have in existing markets and continuing to grow their global presence, with one of the latest explorer yacht Darwin Class 102’ yachts being sold to a Malaysian owner standing testament to this. “The first client in a new market is always very significant and then usually our own clients become our best ambassadors.” Cecchini and the team are very proud that so many new orders have come from recommendations from happy customers. “Our clients are all very enthusiastic about our boats,” says Cecchini. “That said, sometimes, for me, the boat can speak for itself.”

While the yard began with sub-30 metre projects, Cecchini has noted a shift in the buying market. “At the moment buyers are asking for bigger boats,” he says. “That’s the reason that we will soon deliver our biggest project to date, the Nauta Air 111’ (Vripack as the naval architect, design by Nauta Yachts) that is currently under construction.” In the future the yard has not ruled out increasing their size range slightly to include yachts up to 45, maybe even 50, metres, as long as the GT stays within a set range (under 500 gross tonnage). “We have a few bigger projects already under negotiation and in the next few months I think a 42 metre project is quite likely,” he says. “At the moment we are developing our facilities in order to build up to 50 metre yachts.”

With six successful years behind them and a full order book - including the recent signing of a new 37-metre Acciaio 118, the future is looking promising for CdM. “Our client list is growing, and a lot of our clients at the moment are thinking of making a new boat, growing in feet, which means our clients trust us,” says Cecchini. “Our target is to maintain our market leadership and to go on in the projectural research. We are certainly looking forward to see what the next few years will bring.”

Insight: the rise of Cantiere delle Marche

Cantiere delle Marche will be building a one-off 42-metre superyacht, the shipyard announced this week. The build of K42 custom superyacht, owned by and created in partnership with Floating Life, has been secured by the Italian shipyard this month which will see a separate build team work on the construction of the sub 500 GT project.

CdM’s growing base of clientele has led the shipyard to explore different construction methods and capabilities outside its existing ranges. This first project is a result of the shipyard's contact with various designers, engineers and clients around the world, and will take place at the shipyard in parallel with the build of the two other models without affecting progress on the delivery of any of the current projects. The shipyard reports that the special ‘one-off’ unit is already working on a second project, scheduled for delivery in 2019.

"We have been asked for all of these years to build one-off projects designed by the best Naval Architects for amazing yacht owners, and we have always declined because we wanted to build this venture on the strongest fundaments possible," says Vasco Buonpensiere , Director of Sales and Marketing at CdM. "Now we feel that we can afford managing a separate business unit, dealing with one project every 18/24 months, which is for CdM a great opportunity to grow in terms of kow-how, research and developement."

K42's naval archityecture is developed by Studio Hydrotec with Studio Sculli having designed the exterio and interior areas, and is expected to be ready for delivery by the end of 2018. She will become the shipyard’s sixth yacht over 100 feet when launched.

CdM begins construction on custom Floating Life explorer K42

Cantiere delle Marche has announced the successful sale of the new Nauta Air 108. Sold to a northern European client, the yard state that the owner was impressed by the presentation of sistership Narvalo at the latest edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival, ultimately leading to the new addition to their order book.  <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/163527/image/large-726d1a01c3dc15ff1199881e553d09ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/163527">Vasco Buonpensiere, Sales &amp; Marketing Director of Cantiere delle Marche, says: ”We are very proud of this new success that closes a great 2016 for CdM, both in sales and in awards for our yachts.
