Whether industry aficionado, or enthusiastic bystander, the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> needs no introduction. World renowned for the construction of record breaking super sailing and motor yachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has built an international reputation on the quality of its vessels. But such excellence doesn’t happen overnight. Founded in 1884 and born from a family heritage of wooden boat building, the story of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>’s evolution to award-winning superyacht builder is an extraordinary one. Now celebrating its 140th anniversary, we took a look at some of the shipyard’s most notable milestones, to understand how this historic business has become a symbol of the international perception of Dutch quality, and its vision for the future. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302158/image/large-8e81484e61254715d5e713565d776d34.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302158">A Historic Legacy&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> officially dates its history back to the foundation of a boatyard in Ronduite, the Netherlands in 1884, beginning the familial legacy of boat building, initially with the construction of small wooden work and fishing boats. Situated close to the turbulent Zuiderzee (the inland sea to the north east of Amsterdam which is now the freshwater IJsselmeer), the Huisman’s boat building business was a key part of local life, but as the local fishing industry dwindled, so did the need for the Huisman boats. It was Jan Huisman, alongside his brother Jacob, that eventually made the decision to focus the yard’s energy’s on wooden sailing yachts and by the 1950s, the shipyard had begun to build its reputation on the construction of steel and aluminium vessels. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303052/image/large-40c16173cfd96905e8b99f9eb87e780c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303052">A pioneer from its earliest origins, the advent of aluminium in the 1960s was a turning point for the yard which innovated with the bending and welding of aluminium for hull construction. By the 1970s, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Huisman</a> had moved to its current location in Vollenhove where deeper water access and space heralded the growth of both the company and its yachts. In 1984, on its 100th anniversary, the shipyard was awarded its Royal warrant in recognition of good behaviour including tax paying and the quality of its work, recognising its now international track record for the construction of both large racing yachts and performance cruising yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302159/image/large-3f87873567cd17e9ed98d3e72adf31cd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302159">Now credited with the construction of nearly 200 unique vessels from eight to 90-metres, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has become one of the most productive bespoke builders in the world, and its existing fleet of more than 45 superyachts represents 140 years of knowledge passed down from generation to generation. Today the historic legacy of the shipyard is deeply embedded within its daily operations and is felt by members of the team, many of whom have remained with the company for decades, even generations. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300289/image/large-ad99abdef67ffa1130be254ef98f8a32.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300289">Innovation at its Heart&nbsp;With a deeply ingrained ethos of innovation baked into its roots, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has long been ahead of the curve when it comes to developments in yacht construction. The yachts currently in-build alone represent the diversity of the shipyard’s capabilities; the 85-metre New World Sloop that will be the largest single masted yacht in the world when launched in 2026; the 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Project 40652.0m (170'7&quot;)Royal Huisman2024">Project 406</a>, the world’s largest sportfisher motor yacht; and the 65-metre Aquarius II. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/17017/image/large-ebb895ce1e9bf7088738f93b5f74bc81.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17017">A forerunner with the use of aluminium and an early adopter of carbon composite components as early as 1997, the shipyard continues to pioneer today with the development of new construction methods. Most recently, the shipyard developed Featherlight, which utilises a high-grade mix between aluminium and carbon within its hulls and offers weight reductions of up-to 15 percent. Pioneered aboard the recently delivered <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10110" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nilaya46.8m (153'7&quot;)Royal Huisman2023">Nilaya</a> and used within the construction of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Project 40652.0m (170'7&quot;)Royal Huisman2024">Project 408</a>, Featherlight rethinks and reduces the use of materials combining the low noise levels offered by aluminium. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296422/image/large-ce4f57a16cf9ae0f7a2492cf9d58bbdd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296422">Not only is the Featherlight method a unique offering within the sector, it has also produced a result that is competitive with carbon composite racing yachts, an unparalleled result for aluminium construction. Regatta performance, though often an aim, is not the only motivator behind the shipyard’s innovation efforts. Today the superyacht sector is under increasing scrutiny and owners are more conscious than ever of their environment, not only its protection, but also their enjoyment of it.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296399/image/large-d78cdf6319b96951059c473ead9dcf2a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296399">Developed for the 47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10110" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nilaya46.8m (153'7&quot;)Royal Huisman2023">Nilaya</a>, the benefits of the Featherlight method are tenfold. With less power needed for motoring, the team was able to develop a new ‘tribrid’ propulsion system providing three power options with a battery bank allowing for silent operation. This system, smaller than conventional engines, had the additional benefit of leaving more space for interior accommodation. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303047/image/large-316d6b3995c2872a52f179e8c20d7928.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303047">While Featherlight has been a step into the future, Project 410, New World Sloop, is set to break the wheel when it comes to her green technology. A project driven by passionate owners that recognised <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>’s ability to champion radical projects, the sloop is set to be powered completely with self-generated propulsion, using both a huge 2-megawatt battery bank and a yacht’s most readily available natural power source: the wind.While the shipyard’s current and ongoing innovations are revolutionary, like all of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>’s developments, they are based on a deep technical understanding that has been honed over decades. Launching its first hybrid yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ethereal58.04m (190'5&quot;)Royal Huisman2009">Ethereal</a> in 2009, today the shipyard is able to retrofit the existing worldwide superyacht fleet with its hybrid system, future-proofing its vessels and upgrading them with cutting-edge technology. Both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1518" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Foftein II30.21m (99'1&quot;)Royal Huisman1999">Foftein II</a>, built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> in 1999, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/636" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Juliet43.58m (142'12&quot;)Royal Huisman1993">Juliet</a>, built in 1993, have undergone this transformation at the company’s refit facility <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7286" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Huisfit (Company)">Huisfit</a> in Amsterdam. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/167125/image/large-fbd5aa512fed9d5574b5185fd7f777b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167125">Looking to the Future&nbsp;While technological innovations within the shipyard’s projects are a staple of the ethos of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>, in 2023 the company began to look at its global image from a different perspective. Over the past few years, the motivation for individuals to own yachts has evolved, with a deeper focus on the surrounding environment and the goal to spend more time autonomously onboard. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has aimed to future proof its brand, just as it is future proofing its vessels, to ensure that the prestige that the brand represents today continues into the future.&nbsp;Launching its new website, branding and house style this year, the company has once again evolved so that its image reflects both the innovation that takes place under its roof, and its historic lineage. Central to her new electric propulsion system is a new gearbox, which is aligned with an electric motor and generates power for indirect propulsion. The Huisfit team at Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> have successfully redelivered their 47.65-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4241" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wisp47.65m (156'4&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2014">Wisp</a>, following a refit to return her to turnkey condition. The refit, which began in October 2020, after the sloop arrived at the shipyard’s non-tidal, deep water location in Amsterdam, included the overall of her mechanical parts and a full paint job. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/185959/image/large-1174433d3c12a5bad5d1518455791f53.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/185959">The refit was overseen by Nigel Ingram of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM Newport</a>, together with Captain Richard Humphreys representing the owner. The full scope of work was executed – in spite of Covid-19 restrictions – as planned and delivered within the agreed budget. Built entirely from aluminium, the sloop has a performance level far beyond that which her classic aesthetic belies.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195526/image/large-f16301ce69b17046866c3a34d8e1f130.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195526">The Huisfit team, the refit arm of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>, are also currently in the process of refitting the 37-metre classic motorsailer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/260" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantide37.28m (122'4&quot;)Philip & Sons1930">Atlantide</a>, the work on which has been given 'rebuild' status following <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/52277" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rebuild begins on historic 1930s yacht Atlantide (2021-01-14 16:00:00 +0100)">her arrival in January this year</a>. Sailing yacht Wisp completes refit at Royal Huisma

Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman have redelivered their sailing yacht, Wisp, following a refit, leaving her in turnkey condition.

With four maintenance and renewal projects conducted in Holland (Flyer One, Samurai, Heartbeat, Juliet) and a fifth carried out by the Huisfit team in Antibes (Borkumriff IV), it has been busy for Royal Huisman’s refit department so far this year, and it doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon. Four upcoming projects include Skat and Hyperion, who both recently arrived in Holland to start their refit programmes, with Huisfit also announcing that Athena and Adèle will be undergoing work by the Huisfit team.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150408/image/large-22e9b377c2f45bac2ae969d6d8fe2e33.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150408">Following on from her visit to Harlingen in 2012, the owner and captain of the 71 metre Lürssen motoryacht, Skat has recently arrived at the Huisfit facilities. Work on the project has commenced and includes: the servicing of the main engines and gensets, systems updates, new teak decking for all decks, painting of the hull and superstructure, the servicing of all transom doors, passarelle, side boarding platforms, cranes, etc. and the overhaul of complete sewage plant.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150409/image/large-5c40ac7af6a12090dde45e1d6c876294.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150409">Following a Scandinavian cruise this summer, the Royal Huisman built sloop, Hyperion, launched in 1998 has returned to Vollenhove. Work on the 47 metre vessel includes upgrading of the propulsion shaft and propeller, the replacement and installation of new gensets, a new main switchboard, upgrading of navigation and communication electronics, upgrading of PLC hardware and Alarm and Monitoring software Maintenance, overhaul and painting of hull and superstructure and new teak decking.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150410/image/large-3ab19e6ef697084793a59e7abd465f5e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150410">Since her delivery 10 years ago the 90 metre Athena, has been engaged in extensive world cruising. Ebb Tide was completed in 1987, and was ordered by a client who wanted to move up from a large Swan, and who enjoyed sailing shorthanded. The yacht is designed by Sparkman &amp; Stephens, with an interior by Pieter Beeldsnijder. The yacht was purchased by the owner of the much larger Royal Huisman Juliet, and she was used as a training boat in preparation for taking Juliet&nbsp;offshore.

Photos By Franco PaceAfter an exceptional journey of innovation and development at the Royal Huisman yard, the graceful 58m Ron Holland designed ketch Ethereal, with interior and exterior styling by Pieter Beeldsnijder, took to the water in November 2008 to begin the serious voyaging for which she was created. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127950/image/large-92c3d7827561e07f3215d400b6df52a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127950">Following sea trials out of Harlingen, a deepwater seaport in close proximity to the yard’s Vollenhove location, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/375">Ethereal</a> has set sail for the Canaries and the Caribbean, where her owners enjoyed their very first taste of this sensational craft with family and friends. Their experience has been an extraordinary one, because, in so many ways, Ethereal is no ordinary yacht. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127951/image/large-d8c61eb86e89c068e914493b792a0512.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127951">     <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127952/image/large-0ac3b956b3502ad58e5cde8c5ebe8c91.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127952">When owners Bill &amp; Shannon Joy decided to build Ethereal they were inspired, first, by a great admiration for the Royal Huisman-built 43m ketch <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/636">Juliet</a> – also created together with Ron Holland and Pieter Beeldsnijder; and, second, by their desire to create “a private island” offering his family and guests every comfort and amenity, yet conceived and operated to deliver these in the most enlightened and progressive manner. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127953/image/large-ec857fb4d1da155729b4d18842af5886.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127953">To achieve these ends the project became, as Bill Joy described it, “a floating lab”. Few off-the-peg technologies were available to meet the objectives of long range sustainability of operations, energy efficiency, flexible energy management, reduced operational cost and lower carbon footprint. So Owner and Yard worked together with some of the world’s finest specialists to develop solutions. These are not – and never can be – the ultimate solutions; they are steps along a road. But these steps take Ethereal further down that road than any private yacht built to date – with fascinating consequences for those who sail her… <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127954/image/large-ed56c733fbc02f26e0d6e498bb67931d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127954">Step below decks on Ethereal and you cannot help but be aware of the calm and the quiet – the sheer tranquillity that immerses you – no matter what is occurring operationally on the boat. The entire living area is cocooned, top, bottom and sides, like a refrigerated vehicle, in high-tech insulation materials that ensure a comfortable and stable air temperature without the need for heavy heating or cooling loads – wherever in the world the yacht might be. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127955/image/large-354bfadbd571840906c92a10d8f8355b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127955">Noise and vibration, already substantially managed at source, is yet further distanced from the accommodation. The light is easy on the eye (and on the furnishings) because light-switchable glass in the hatches screens UV and infrared light as required for the time of day and the strength of the sun. Switch on some dimmable interior lighting. You’ll be surprised by the warm ambience created, especially when you know that the entire system uses mould-breaking LED technology. (Who said LED lighting can only produce a cold, white light that cannot be dimmed?) These facilities – and a great deal more – are operated through conveniently located touchpad screens modelled on the Apple iPhone user interface. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127956/image/large-c34a95f23e326b4ffb18c798ee5914d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127956">Ethereal’s owner was determined to create the “perfect mobile gathering place for family and friends” and there can be no doubt this has been achieved, with open, relaxed areas that flow from one to another, complemented by smaller, more intimate areas, when privacy or seclusion are preferred. Clutter has been avoided: “We prefer Zen to ornate” comments Bill Joy, adding “you don’t have to put any art on these boats, the boat itself is the art.” He notes, however, that the yacht does feature beautiful woodwork: “When you go to Royal Huisman, you would be foolish not to let them express all their skill”. He also made the observation, during his launch speech, that the professionalism and knowledge of the Royal Huisman team surpassed any he had encountered even whilst at the helm of Silicon Valley’s own Sun Microsystems, or in business generally. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127957/image/large-ccb829a72828254b649b3beb18b9a80c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127957">     <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127958/image/large-8a70f062204c1aeb369648ed29b78c61.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127958">Descending from the subtly proportioned ‘al fresco’ teak trimmed pilothouse one enters a light and very airy upper salon. With an atmosphere of easy comfort enhanced by panoramic views, this incredibly spacious area is subtly subdivided. To port, a cosy, intimate seating area that offers amenity for board games also cleverly transforms to provide sophisticated dining for eight. To starboard, a full sized dining area for ten flows gracefully into an impressive staircase, beckoning access to the magnificently spacious lower salon.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127959/image/large-4f986b9bf1e664b99c614db927bbc7c2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127959">Here, a near-cinema-sized flat screen TV to port offers the ultimate in high-impact entertainment, whilst a beautifully appointed music den to starboard conceals a piano and an ensemble of percussion instruments. The captain navigates to the location, furls headsails, and selects “station-keeping mode” to maintain a computer-controlled geostationary position close to the whales via synchronized control of thrusters, engines and rudder. But not only does Ethereal’s Captain have a man conning in the crow’s nest; the bank of ‘tru daylight’ back lit, water-cooled screens collectively display chart, radar and systems monitoring consecutively at the helm, under the cover and security of the pilothouse, and even in guest cabins to provide the navigational information required with scarcelyimaginable contrast and clarity – screens with ten times the daylight viewing power of a laptop in direct sunlight, once thought an impossibility. Ethereal is easily manoeuvred into position to drop anchors thanks to joystick control of her twin engines and the innovative, retractable, hubless electric thrusters that provide the same silent and efficient power, to port or starboard. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127971/image/large-b6d9e50ab5d3d28a4413dc3f555ecc0e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127971">At anchor once more, the engineer uses energy buffering procedures to meet peak loads without the #2 generator having to kick into play: the #1 generator is complemented by the 400 kWh lithiumion phosphate battery bank instead. SuperYacht of the Week: Ethereal, a journey of innovation and development

Royal Huisman sees orders for Gitana and Windjammer project cancelled

During the 2007 Superyacht Cup in Palma, I sailed a day on the 52m gaff rigged schooner Meteor. Although I was already aware of the quality of Royal Huisman, I was very much impressed. From bow to stern, keel to mast, everything was perfectly done and she sailed like a dream. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124409/image/large-6c7fe18670ccda6ebebfd94633784b9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124409">Visiting Royal Huisman is always a great pleasure, and my last visit was no exception. Our tour of the yard started in the shed where <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/796">Twizzle</a> will be build. Twizzle is a 57.5m flybridge ketch for experienced owners, who currently own a 55m Feadship motor yacht and previously owned a large Perini Navi. She is a yacht of many firsts for Royal Huisman: • the first yacht completely styled by the team of Redman Whiteley Dixon, with Todhunter Designers providing interior decoration • the first build with naval architecture by Ed Dubois • the first sailing yacht with a flying bridge The first plates for her hull and superstructure, which will be build in-house, were being cut. She is scheduled for launch and sea trials in March 2008. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124410/image/large-c1e95c2a7332a10b2a247b4819809fa1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124410">We continue our tour to the biggest shed, the one where the 89m Athena (2004) was built, and currently occupied by the largest order of Royal Huisman, the 58m <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/375">Ethereal</a>. Inspired by the 43m Juliet (1993), Ethereal promises to be one of the most complex and advanced superyachts ever build. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124411/image/large-05f7c4029f11ed2e44ea48a884c6374c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124411"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124412/image/large-071b4075a7682bd8e01bb791124529cb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124412">Conceived by an owner from the technology industry, she has some very special features. Perhaps the most-talked-about feature of this project is the hybrid electromechanical propulsion system that allows the yacht, under sail, to charge its technically-advanced bank of lithium polymer batteries, instead of using generators. This energy bank, in turn, is the alternative power plant, enabling Ethereal to raise anchor, motor, hoist sails and run ship’s systems, all under stored electrical power for hours at a time. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124413/image/large-9b71f671ba279e08547139cbc51612da.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124413"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124414/image/large-c0fa489f3624d5aa4934b0d443d5a165.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124414">Ethereal is well underway, with the interior being installed now, and is on schedule for delivery in the autumn of this year. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124415/image/large-c2e403d4b91bdb530299a99d4b3151d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124415">Royal Huisman is currently not only building three new yachts, but also completing a major refit on <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/636">Juliet</a>. It was difficult to compare the sizes of Ethereal, being 15 meters longer, and Juliet, as the first was in a very big shed, making her appear smaller than she really is and the second was in a much smaller shed, making her look bigger. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124416/image/large-1887ebda3b808293580cab665d2733bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124416"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124417/image/large-390e293db5ee81a5d7d2eb5b50304ba7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124417">Next door to Juliet, the re-creation of Tommy Sopwith’s beautiful Super J <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/384">Endeavour II</a> was taking place. She is the third Huisman yacht for the same owner, following <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/595">Hyperion</a> in 1999 and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288">Athena</a> in 2004. The hull had just been turned and she was made ready for installation of the wiring and piping. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124418/image/large-014e2e0f8611dc722c96e0386e626fe8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124418"> Interest in these legendary racing yachts has grown apace, with a number of restorations (including the smaller <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621">Endeavour</a> by Royal Huisman in 1989) and the 2006 recreation of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a>, the “Super-J” that defeated Endeavour II in 1937. Under J-Class Association rules, some design features are restricted historically, but performance can be optimized through a more flexible approach to sail area, ballast ratio, righting moment and build materials. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124419/image/large-d4cfe110be93d5cc85397354e7a0ed4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124419"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124420/image/large-446d52642c8e66c6940d42c718ec08e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124420">As a result, naval architects Gerard Dijkstra &amp; Partners are overseeing the build of Endeavour II’s hull in Alustar, with spars and rig in carbon composite to create a yacht that should demonstrate the full potential of Charles E Nicholson’s original design. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124421/image/large-6f84db10b90efd73cd2dba0d55712534.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124421">Endeavour II is slated for handover in time for the 2009 J class Spring racing season. Royal Huisman is one of the very few shipyards that build everything in-house, from the hull to the interior. All yacht building principles are covered in their 30.000 square facility and one of the most interesting places is the furniture workshop. Before the furniture is moved into the yacht, it’s first build on a mall, so everything fits perfectly in the yacht afterwards. Thus not only improving the efficiency, but also the quality, as people don’t walk in each other’s ways during the construction.
