Yacht conversions have been garnering a lot of superyacht media attention in recent years, as they are being promoted as a quicker and more sustainable alternative to new-builds. There are conversions and conversions: from a complete rebuild of a warship to a converted tug. Time for Ralph Dazert, <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT</a>’s Head of Intelligence, to go beyond the media buzz and study the numbers behind the fleet of yachts converted from other vessel types.The fleet of conversions<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216914/image/large-421ef462ee71c88e89274b2f33a0a07c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216914">According to <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a>’ own intelligence database, <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>, there were 184 conversion yachts of over 30 metres in service at the start of 2024. Another nine vessels were in the process of being converted although information on some of these projects is scarce. The largest yacht conversion in our database is the Turkish <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11924" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="OK146.0m (479'0&quot;)Oshima Shipbuilding Co Ltd1982">OK</a>, a yacht support vessel of 146-metres and 10,224 GT converted from a Dutch semi submersible heavy lift vessel. 59 vessels, or close to a third of the fleet, measure between 30 and 40-metres, while 51 vessels, or about 28% of the fleet, measure between 40 and 50-metres. 53 vessels or 29% of the fleet measure between 50 and 80-metres with the remaining 21 vessels or 11% measuring more than 80 metres in length.The most popular original build country of converted yachts is the United States, contributing 28 vessels. German (25), the Netherlands (24, the United Kingdom (20) and Japan (17 vessels) are also very popular sources of converted yachts, with the remaining build countries contributing significantly smaller numbers of vessels.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304073/image/large-8937fd2aa3d6d44f05fb43852e600060.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304073">What did they do and what are they doing now?It seems that owners looking to convert a vessel to a yacht are particularly attracted to former naval and Coast Guard and other former (semi) government vessels like research vessels, pilot cutters and (fisheries) training vessels. What these vessels have in common is that most of them have been built to high specifications, have good seakeeping abilities and most of them have a long endurance as well, so they could stay out at sea to perform their tasks for prolonged periods of time. In addition, most of these vessels have more carrying capacity for supplies and for example tenders and water toys than regular yachts. Finally, many of them were not used that heavily while in service in their original form. This also explains why there are so many Japanese-built vessels in the conversion fleet: almost all of them come from Japanese government fleets and were still relatively young when they were sold out of government service.The preference of conversion yacht owners for sturdy vessels with very good seakeeping abilities is also evidenced by the popularity of offshore supply vessels: we find no less than 25 of them in the fleet and their number keeps rising as the trend towards more explorer yachts continues. Many tugs have also been converted to yachts over the years for the same reasons: today we find at least 18 of them in the fleet. The origin of most converted yachts is also reflected in their uses now: no less than 72 out of 184 yachts are categorised as explorer yachts, while another 19 are yacht support vessels. So together, these two yacht categories take up almost half the fleet. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304072/image/large-6a2f186c7f76970ad2f261cd319507b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304072">Are conversion sales really going up?Despite the considerable attention in superyacht media for yacht conversions, the actual sales numbers do not show a rising trend. If we look at sales of non-yachts for conversion to yachts in the last ten years, these sales mostly moved in a bandwidth between four and seven sales over 30-metres per year. The last good year for conversion sales was 2018, when seven vessels were sold for conversion. Sales then dropped to four and three sales in 2019 and 2020, before going back up five sales each in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, sales were down again to three.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289155/image/large-2f43a8449a99622302d805161cb2a5be.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289155">So, while yacht conversions have become a fixture in the world superyacht fleet, their share of the fleet is still only 3% in number of vessels. However, each year a number of high-profile conversions enter the fleet. They are unique vessels offering many capabilities and often unusual histories, so they will continue to attract our attention, and who knows, maybe we will see their sales numbers rise? After all, new-build yards remain heavily booked at this time and new-build prices are high. With an increasing number of superyachts choosing to move away from the hustle and bustle of the Mediterranean and Caribbean and going off the beaten track to cruise around the world's most exciting destinations, the role of the superyacht guide is becoming an increasingly important one.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31297/image/large-76b5784f97eedfc004c26ceb3e65440f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31297">The 34-metre Paradise in Raja Ampat&nbsp;Alongside their provisioning and shore support services, The Lighthouse Consultancy - which has been assisting yachts in Indonesia since 2009 - offers <a href="https://thelighthouseconsultancy.com/guide-team/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">superyacht guiding services</a> from their highly qualified and experienced local experts. The role of a cruising guide in Indonesia is varied and requires a great deal of flexibility. With over 17,000 islands stretching across an area the size of the continental USA, Indonesia could be considered a daunting destination, however, breaking down the country, there are a number of smaller cruising grounds filled with a variety of hidden gems. Although knowing where beautiful anchorages are located is a key part of a guide’s responsibility, it’s far from the only part of a guide’s duties.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31294/image/large-ea711e1c46b11d22cda9bde54e4c659f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31294">The 55-metre&nbsp;La Familia&nbsp;in Komodo&nbsp;Months in advance of a yacht's arrival into the country, the Lighthouse team begins to create the perfect itinerary, tailored to the yacht owner's needs. Factors such as seasons and weather patterns play a large part in the creation of an adventure to visit the best destinations at the ideal time, this will maximise the owner's enjoyment in the region. Of course, it's not only the weather that plays a role in trip planning - the needs and goals of the guests are the overriding focus when it comes to deciding on locations.Some guests prefer to focus on marine activities, others on seclusion and privacy, some owners want to climb volcanoes and others might bring a support yacht to maximise opportunities to spend exciting days in Indonesia’s prime fishing grounds. Although scuba diving is often one of the top activities for clients in Indonesia, not every visitor is a scuba diver. Knowing the best dive sites in a location is certainly a benefit, but having an in-depth knowledge of all regional attractions is a fundamental necessity.&nbsp;Plans on board change regularly so anticipating the needs of an owner is of utmost importance. The key requirement to ensure the guide is of benefit to the yacht is working with the captain to create a handful of different activity options each day. Snorkelling on a hidden reef, visiting a local weaving village trekking through rainforests, kayaking around beautiful karst islands, wakeboarding, or spending a lazy day on a secluded beach are a few of the many options during a superyacht cruising experience in Indonesia.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31418/image/large-441bb6325c20135150951c948d9261f3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31418">The 67.75-metre Archimedes in Raja Ampat&nbsp; On a daily basis, the role of the guide is to provide a list of interesting activities to the captain, who in turn relays these possibilities to the owner: this is where having a truly experienced guide is important. &nbsp;Having a backup list of activities available in a certain location is key, in case the initial planned activity isn't feasible.&nbsp;Although many other activities are available, diving is often the biggest attraction for many visitors. The world famous marine parks of Raja Ampat and Komodo are just the tips of the iceberg of Indonesian diving. It’s important to have a guide who is experienced in diving many different areas, as the conditions can be tricky. Many of the best dives in the country are current dependent and should not be attempted without a guide familiar with the sites. A guide who has only dived in Komodo or Bali would not be the best option in Raja Ampat for example.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31291/image/large-08988a354993b35c999859e7b24692d0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31291">&nbsp;The 62.5-metre Party Girl in Raja Ampat&nbsp;One element Lighthouse insists upon is that the role of their guides on board a yacht is not only to advise on anchorages and lead excursions, they also need to fit in and work as part of the crew. If no guide activities are required, early mornings should be spent washing and detailing decks alongside the other deck crew. Guides are not rock stars, they are an integral part of the yacht team and can benefit the vessel's experience by easing the workload of other departments when things aren't busy for their guiding role.&nbsp;Finally, part of the charm of cruising in Indonesia is anchoring in front of a remote village whose inhabitants have never seen a superyacht before. In parts of West Papua, for example, the village ‘property’ extends several miles into the ocean and so a visiting vessel is essentially anchoring on the village’s back yard. As such a calm and friendly guide must visit the village elders to explain the purpose of the visit, perhaps offering gifts such as school books, footballs or rice and fuel to the village. An experienced guide also knows which villages have a specific villager that can coordinate an interesting cultural experience – trekking for bird of paradise for example.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31416/image/large-0563df0a4008f904db7dcb51472b878d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31416">The 55-metre Abbracci&nbsp;(ex: Serenity) in Komodo&nbsp;Of course, for a location guide in Indonesia, having a good understanding of the Indonesian language is also a requirement. In the local ports of embarkation, there is always paperwork that needs inspection and communication with Indonesian speaking officials can be challenging without a grasp of the local language. Discovering cruising in Indonesia with the Lighthouse Consultancy

The very first edition of the Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous (KRSR) drew to a close last week, with organisers reporting the inaugural event a success. Hosted from 10th until 12th December in Phuket, Thailand, a total of 15 superyachts attended in total, the largest being the 90-metre Lauren L built by Cassens-Werft in 2002.

Highlights from the rendezvous included an opening cocktail party at Kata Rocks, a cruise with all yachts in attendance to The Surin Phuket where guests were treated to a gourmet beach BBQ, and the invitation-only Owner’s gala dinner hosted in Kata Rocks Penthouse Sky Villa by Feadship.

Inaugural Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous a success

The Thailand Yacht Show will open its doors in Phuket in just three days’ time. Hosted from the 15th to 18th December at the Ao Po Grand Marina - following the inaugural edition of the event earlier this year in February - this second edition of the show will see a wide variety of yachts on display, the largest being the 90 metre Cassens-Werft built Lauren L.

Other notable yachts on display include the 60 metre Feadship superyacht Paraffin, the 51 metre HYS-built Northern Sun, and the 41 metre Alloy Yachts superyacht Destination. A fitting centerpiece to the exhibition, the Show will also display several of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej's own self-built sailing boats, a tribute to the late leader’s passion for the sport of dinghy racing.

 

Sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and the Marine Department, organisers state that the continuous progression of the show is demonstrative of their commitment to establish Thailand as the ‘marine hub of Asia’. “We are confident that the Yacht Show will help boost Thailand’s tourism industry, which in turn will translate into direct economic benefits for related local businesses - driving job creation, while distributing sustainable income and improving local infrastructure too,” commented Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sport.

“Promoting marine tourism is one of our major goals for 2017 as part of the strategy to promote Thailand as a Quality Leisure Destination,” continued Nappadon Pakprot, the Tourism Authority of Thailand Deputy Governor. “We expect the event will contribute to boost the number of yachts visiting Thailand to at least 2,500 yachts in 2017 to generate approximately 7,500 million THB into our economy and related businesses.”

The Top 100 largest superyachts in the world

We take a look at the 10 largest converted superyachts in the world. Some of these yachts started out as a cruiseliner, and some are in fact converted ice breakers. The largest yacht currently being converted, is the 141 metre Swift project Yas in Abu Dhabi. In April 2007 Liveras Yachts announced the purchase of the 88m Constellation. After chartering in the Mediterranean during the summer, the yacht was renamed Lauren L and brought to Greece for an extensive rebuild. Liveras Yachts appointed Nikos Dafnias of Alpha Designs to redesign the yacht. During the refit the overall length of the yacht was increased by 2 meters and a new deck was added. The guest interior areas were increased by 560m2 (42% ) to a total guest area of 1800m2. The rebuild Lauren L will make her debut at the upcoming charter show in Genoa, from 5 to 9 May. Lauren L refit nears completion

Andreas Liveras and Nikos Dafnias of Alpha Marine Designs are proud to announce further details of the refit of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/190">Constellation</a>. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123055/image/large-439ac2bd500fa1dcb6a18348b86b8a63.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123055">“We are actually increasing the guest interior areas by 507 m2, which corresponds to the 41% of the existing guest areas. We are creating five more guest cabins bigger than 30 m2 each. We are also creating a new beauty saloon and a children’s play room. On deck 5 a new owner’s cabin will be constructed, extending to 95 m2 with a private side balcony of approximately 11 m2. The aft deck on the 4th deck will be reconstructed in order to create an exterior dining and lounging area. A boat deck is created on the 5th aft deck. This will accommodate the new speed boats (10 m luxury limousine, 9 m inflatable, 2 x 6 m inflatable, jet skis etc.) and the appropriate tender davits. Deck 6 is extended thus creating a sun deck with exquisite views of the Jacuzzi with fitting awnings and umbrellas. It will also have suitable sitting and sunbathing furniture. A new superstructure is created on deck 6 which will accommodate a health and beauty center. This will include a big sauna, steam bath, aromatherapy room, gym and a relaxing observation saloon with an amazing view. On the exterior deck a large bar will be constructed, and in front of the saloon there will also be a sun bathing area with suitable equipment (furniture, deck chairs etc.). The bow of the vessel will be fully remodeled, a new deck with teak lining is constructed over the mooring deck and also a new helideck. The interventions are made in all areas (masts, fashion plates, funnel, new main masts, grilles etc.) so as to have a new aesthetic result. Externally there will be new operational and decorative lighting while all the navigation and communication instruments and the antennas will be re-arranged. New teak decks, new stainless steel rails etc. will be fitted on the new and the old decks. Finally, the vessel will be painted (filling, fairing, painting) to superyacht quality with Awl-grip and Siekens systems.” <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/190">Constellation</a> will commence her refit on 10 September 2007 and be available for charter from 1 May 2008 in the South of France.

Liveras Yachts reveals plans to rebuild Constellation

As from the 1st October 2007 she will be made available for Alpha Marine Designs and Constructions for major improvements including full spa, full gym, luxury open air restaurants &amp; bars and the VIP suites will be increased to 21 ( for 42 guests).
