Superyachts Dibar, Lionheart and Boadicea in Cap Ferrat 

Summer temperatures have returned to the Mediterranean and with it, so too has the fleet of superyachts that frequent the shores of the French Riviera every summer. Seen off Cap Ferrat this past weekend was the 156-metre Dilbar, 90-metre Lionheart and Amels’ refitted 76.6-metre Boadicea. Dilbar was awarded Motor Yacht of the Year at the World SuperYacht Awards on Saturday, and also walked away with the Best Motor Yacht in the Full Displacement 3,000GT and above category. She was delivered to her owner by Lürssen last year and features an exterior design by Espen Oeino and an interior by Winch Design.

Superyachts anchored off Cap Ferrat

Eddie Jordan is a man who needs little introduction to most. Formula 1 superstar, television personality and entrepreneur, the 68 year old Jordan has lead a fast-paced life filled with enough envy inducing experiences to last several lifetimes. One of the leading ambassadors of the Sunseeker brand, he is also one of the most vocal superyacht owners in the industry amidst the more favoured ownership approach of total privacy.

Jordan’s connection with yachting did not come as a consequence of fame and fortune. Born by the sea on the east coast of Ireland not far from Dublin, boats are in his blood, he tells us, and he spent the early part of his formative teenage years competing on board an International 420 Class Dinghy. “I did the Irish Championships in the 420, which then became the 470 which was the Olympic class, and then motor racing started for me,” he says. “I’ve always needed to live by the sea though, and it was far too many years that I didn’t. I feel a different person now that I’m back by the sea for the past eight years or so. It makes a big difference.”

Times have changed quite significantly since Jordan’s sailing days on board these 4.2 metre vessels. Since taking delivery of his very first Sunseeker motor yacht in 1986, he hasn’t been a year without a Sunseeker superyacht in his life, with his current model, the 47.25 metre 115, Blush, the biggest yet. Rising up the size ranges as and when they became available over the years, Jordan’s strong relationship with the yard has resulted in quite a number of Jordan’s vessels having also been the very first of its kind, with a close cooperation meaning that Jordan has had the unique opportunity to be influentially involved in various aspects of both the design and build of these vessels almost from the very inception.

Speaking of this close relationship, Jordan says, “I’m a ridiculously loyal person - that’s a very important factor within my life. Having said that, with Sunseeker it’s not just about loyalty. The brand suits my needs, and I really didn’t find it hard to align myself with the company. The quality of the production is great, as is the design. They meet my expectations. They also let me change things around and do what I want to the boat, so that’s also why I have invariably always bought the first one in any series. Robert Braithwaite (Sunseeker Founder and President) became a great friend, and so I would ask him if we could incorporate something here or there.”

Though one of the most well-known owners of Sunseeker’s motor yachts, Jordan certainly didn’t throw away his sailing roots in his later years, and in addition to a number of Sunseeker motor yachts, he has also enjoyed an extensive collection of Oyster sailing yachts. Explaining his connection with sailing, he says, “Sailing is where I came from and when I left motor racing, sailing is one of the things I actually wanted to do. I wanted to sail around the world and be a circumnavigator. I didn’t ultimately go into doing that professionally, but I bought an Oyster 885 and I still race it today.”

Hearing Jordan speak of his experiences sailing, it would seem that this is really the true passion of Jordan’s heart. So we asked, why the focus on motor yachts? The answer was logical: just like riding a motorbike and driving a car, there is a stark difference between the two, and Jordan, like many others, uses his sailing and motor yachts for quite different experiences. “You really need to live the moment when you’re riding a nice motor bike,” he illustrates. “There’s a certain thrill there. With a car, you’re inclined to just get in it and go to wherever you’re going. That doesn’t mean I’m blase about motor boats, though. A motor boat satisfies all my needs. Particularly when I was still motor racing, for example, because I needed to be sure I could be back in time to head off to a race or a meeting. Sailing is a completely different concept. You get in and time instantly becomes less of a factor.”

Time - or lack thereof - was just one of the factors in Jordan’s decision to specifically build his latest motor yacht, Blush, for charter… as well as the self-professed tendency to be constantly looking for the best bang for your buck. Originally factoring in from six to eight weeks per year for personal use on board Blush, Jordan told us that he quickly realised he didn’t even need that, with his schedule filled to bursting with his various vocations in life from Formula 1 to television to his rock n’ roll band. Speaking of the decision to charter, he says, “I’m a bit of a serious pikey… In other words, I’m from an old school of thought. I saw buying Sunseeker’s as a business where I could enjoy the asset. As an asset it needs to work, but not to a detriment to the time that I want to spend on board. I use the sailing boat for my wife and I and a couple of friends - not really for family - so Blush is really a family boat for me."

 

“She’s bigger which suits having more people to look after. But the requirement that I thought I would need Blush for six to eight weeks a year… well, actually, I don’t need her that much. Therefore it’s simple. If a charter comes and it suits, we take it, and I will use her occasionally if she is not chartered. But generally speaking, she was built with charter in mind. It probably suits me better this way.”

Regardless of having enjoyed three successful seasons with Blush, Jordan tells us he’s now looking for a new boat, this time something a little different. “There’s no doubt I’m looking for something different. I might go for an open boat… I’d like to spend some time looking at that kind of thing. For once I may actually go down in size. I think people have gone loopy in regards to the increasing size of these yachts. The size of your wallet seems to be represented in the size of the yacht. People get a little bit carried away, and of course it’s nice to see 90 metre boats - Lionheart and M/Y A are incredible boats, for example.”

With looking for something different, does that mean a departure from Sunseeker after 20 years of continuous business? “I might have to go somewhere else,” Jordan concludes, “but I hope not - they’re good people. I think if there wasn’t something there that wasn’t exactly right, they would try and find a way of getting that to me.”

Blush is currently listed for sale with Camper &amp; Nicholsons at an asking price of £19,500,000.

The three superyachts St David, Lionheart and Andreas L outside Monaco

Lining up outside the port of Monaco last summer were the three Benetti superyachts St David, Lionheart, and Andreas L. Each yacht’s owner commissioned a unique designer, yet each of the yachts still retain a recognisable Benetti element. The 2008-built St David was designed by Winch Design and features a few distinct Winch design cues such as those large arches on the sundeck. The 90-metre Lionheart, launched last year, is the work of Stefano Natucci with the design pair at Green &amp; Mingarelli Design behind her interior. Andreas L’s interior is a highly bespoke affair by the hands of Redman Whitely Dixon.

Lionheart

Kismet 

As soon as we noticed the 95.2-metre Kismet heading north along the Dutch coast, we didn’t hesitate to jump in a plane and fly over the North Sea to capture this amazing superyacht in a completely different environment than her usual cruising grounds.

Dilbar 

Completed last year by Lürssen, the 156-metre Dilbar was captured here whilst undertaking her maiden voyage to Gibraltar. The conditions were challenging to say the least, with some serious wind and heavy seas. Taking to the skies and leaning out of the open door was worth it, however, and we managed to capture Dilbar in a way as unique as the boat herself. Her designer, Espen Oeino comments: “Dilbar is the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage and one of the most complex and challenging yachts that has ever been built. I feel honored and privileged to have been part of this incredible voyage.”

Aquarius

Feadship’s sixth launch of 2016 is the 92-metre Aquarius. Pictured here while cruising the North Sea, with exterior design by Sinot, her huge windows definitely stand out as a design feature.

Aquijo

This amazing sailing superyacht by Vitters &amp; Oceanco, launched in 2015, was anchored off Monaco last summer. Whilst flying in helicopter over the anchorage we spotted the light on her blue hull and knew we had to capture it.

A 

After taking photos of the 119-metre A in a range of beautiful destinations - from Formentera to Monaco to beneath the Northern Lights in Iceland - it was unexpected that one of our favourite shoots would be in no other than the heart of the Netherlands. During her visit to Rotterdam, the light on her hull immediately caught our eye and this is certainly one of the most interesting angles of this unique superyacht.

Vertigo

Feadship launch number seven for 2016 is the 96-metre Vertigo. Her beautiful lines were designed by the renowned Redman Whiteley Dixon studio. Here she is at her launch in Makkum in November.

Alfa Nero 

The iconic 82-metre Alfa Nero was anchored outside Monaco during last year’s Monaco Yacht Show. There is definitely no shortage of photos of this Oceanco, so we wanted to do something a little bit different - with the help of the heli!

Jupiter

On our first photo flight of 2017 we captured the 123m superyacht Project Jupiter from above. Her lines are unlike anything else the German shipyard Lürssen has launched to date and will certainly turn heads wherever she goes.

Colourful superyachts in Monaco

The waters of the French Riviera attract a number of yachts each year of all shapes, sizes and colours. This image was taken ahead of the annual Monaco Yacht Show in September this year, capturing the 48-metre golden Palmer Johnson superyacht Khalilah, the 90-metre Lionheart and the ever colourful Saluzi anchored off Beausoleil outside Monaco. Behind Lionheart, another Benetti superyacht hides – the 60-metre Lady Luck (ex Lady Lara).

Lionheart

During the MYS 2016 Benetti’s 90 metre superyacht Lionheart was anchored off Monaco. We didn’t hesitate to hire a helicopter to capture the only aerial shots of Lionheart at the Show.

SilverFast

Taking photos of a superyacht as iconic as SilverFast will always be a special event. Her beautiful lines and special colour makes it a pleasure for a photographer to work with.

Dilbar

The biggest superyacht in the world by gross tonnage, Dilbar is captured here on her maiden trip from Germany. It was a cold weekend in May when the SYT team took a car, then a ferry and then a plane to spot this beauty hitting the waves. A day later the team was again back in the plane, this time travelling to Iceland to capture another stunning vessel, M/Y A.

Kismet

Spotted by the SYT team while cruising the North Sea on a cold saturday at the end of March is this Espen Oeino designed superyacht Kismet. Her sharp lines and unique colour make her a favourite for any yachting enthusiast.

Queen Miri

After an extensive refit at Amico in Italy, Queen Miri made her appearance during the MYS 2016 at anchor off Monaco. With her new paint job and extended hull and superstructure, she looks brand new once again. As quality photos of Queen Miri were limited,  the SYT team decided to get in the chopper and document her from every angle.

Ulysses

This unique 107 metre explorer superyacht is a hot topic in the entire industry. With her story being followed by SYT from the early days of construction we don’t skip any chance to extend our database with unique photography of this stunning vessel. Here she was pictured from the air while helicopter operations were in full swing during MYS 2016.

Quantum Blue

Delivered in 2015 by Lürssen is this 104 metre superyacht designed by Tim Heywood. A project closely followed by the SYT team from the very beginning, we again jumped into the helicopter during the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix to see her from every angle possible. A truly original series of photos was taken by SYT photographer, Tom van Oossanen.

Maybe the most photographed superyacht on the planet is the 119 metre M/Y A, built by Blohm &amp; Voss. Her exterior design is one of a kind and with her currently being up for sale, the interior has finally been released to the industry as well. SYT travelled to many locations to see her, Iceland, Formentera, Monaco, Amsterdam and Rotterdam and took photos of her of every angle which have been shared on social media worldwide.

Benetti’s largest yacht to date, the 90 metre superyacht Lionheart, has departed Italian waters this week and arrived at the island of Malta as her first port of call. It is believed that the yacht has been delivered to her owner and Lionheart now takes over the title from the 1980-built superyacht Kingdom 5KR (then Nabila) as the Italian shipyard's largest yacht ever built. It seems Lionheart will be traveling with a private chase tender complete with its own custom graphics to match the yacht’s name. Superyacht photographer Karl Borg took these exclusive photos of the yacht today where she is currently moored in Malta’s Grand Harbour Marina.

Benetti’s largest yacht to date is currently under going sea trials off the coast of Italy where she is moored in the port of Livorno. Known as project FB 262 throughout her build, Lionheart is built for a repeat client, who took delivery of a 63 metre Benetti yacht by the same name in 2006, now known as Lioness V.

Exclusive: Benetti preparing to launch 90m superyacht Lionheart

At the Cannes Yachting Festival, Benetti's CEO Vincenzo Poerio just announced minutes ago, that Benetti has signed two contracts to build two 100m+ superyachts.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150426/image/large-a82c19d930d8b341c92e9faa7e0ceb9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150426">Vincenzo Poerio said: "The world is more and more looking for larger yachts and as you know we are building a 90 metre which will be delivered next year. Breaking News: Benetti signs two 100m+ superyacht contracts

Lift Emotion has announced that they have signed a contract for the construction and installment of several marine elevators for the 90 metre super yacht, currently under construction in Livorno at Benetti. Project FB262 will be the largest yacht delivered by Benetti. For this particular project, Lift Emotion will supply three guest and crew elevators, as well as a dumb waiter. Lift Emotion will design, deliver and install these elevators in such a way, that the shipyard can decorate them, to exactly match the yacht’s custom interior. Lift Emotion uses their C-line marine elevator, a proven solution that is well known for the rigidity and durability. The hydraulic driven elevators are controlled by special hydraulic pumps and electronically controlled valves that ensure a smooth ride. The elevators will feature central opening landing doors, that have Solas A0-class certificates to match the demands by class and flag state. Lift Emotion plans to finish the elevators in the first quarter of 2013, and soon after that will start the installation on board of the vessel. Lift Emotion supplies elevators for 90 metre Benetti FB262

At the Miami Yacht Show last week, Benetti announced a new contact for a new 90 metre superyacht. Details are still unknown, but the yacht will be the largest yacht delivered by the Italian yard since the delivery in 1980 of the Bannenberg designed 86 metre superyacht Nabila (now Kingdom 5KR).
