At 42.06-metres, her graceful lines, storied past and impeccable craftsmanship have, rightfully, positioned her as a beacon of timeless elegance and maritime heritage.Built by the illustrious <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff Manufacturing Company</a> and designed by the legendary Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> is not merely a yacht; she is a floating piece of history, a testament to the golden age of sail.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332325/image/large-2ef9ae47bcf6383b82a884823b30a923.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332325">The steel-hulled schooner was launched from the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff Manufacturing Co</a>. slipway in Bristol, Rhode Island, in spring 1916 under the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a>. Launched as the American flagship, she was built for Jacob Frederick Brown, a Boston textile manufacturer and avid yachtsman, who paid $75,000 to have her commissioned (around $2.3 million in today’s currency).The name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> was chosen in honour of Brown’s wife, with all his yachts bearing her name. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> was crafted from the same half model as her near-sisterships <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5247" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vagrant39.0m (127'11&quot;)Herreshoff1913">Vagrant II</a> and Ohonkara, built in 1913 and 1920 respectively, with a design rescaled from Harold Vanderbilt’s first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5248" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vagrant of Burnham32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1910">Vagrant</a> boat of 1910. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5247" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vagrant39.0m (127'11&quot;)Herreshoff1913">Vagrant</a> yacht featured steel frames and a wooden backbone and planking, with the rescaling of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> resulting in a 43 percent increase in length and a 35 percent increase in her beam, draft and freeboard. This not only saved on carving, but enabled him to tweak the already successful design to be better. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916"><img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/332327/image/large-ab5850dabb9fd4aa2e6f6790aaa84e1d.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&amp;X-Amz-Credential=AKIA52TLVJASOPFTPHWY%2F20241011%2Feu-west-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&amp;X-Amz-Date=20241011T104749Z&amp;X-Amz-Expires=900&amp;X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&amp;X-Amz-Signature=05f749ac03ddba49068982af1911f294811c4be20b0fa99c9a30399bb222f88e" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332327">Mariette</a> remained in Brown’s fleet until 1927, when the schooner was sold to businessman Francis Boardman Crowninshield, the brother of renowned yacht designer B.B. Crowninshield. Renaming her Cleopatra’s Barge II, he painted her black with a white boot-top and a gilded stripe, inspired by the original Cleopatra’s Barge of 1816, which was owned by his family and reportedly “America’s first yacht.”&nbsp;Francis and his wife, Louise Evelina duPont Crowninshield, sailed aboard Cleopatra’s Barge II&nbsp;until 1942 when she was acquired by the US Navy for coastal patrol during the war. After the war, Francis refused to reclaim her, believing she had been ruined by naval operations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332326/image/large-6d7422a3cf76d092c5882e7ff839f0c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332326">Passing through several owners, the schooner was listed as Gee Gee III in 1946, according to a supplement to the 1939 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a> of Yachts UK. She remained in Boston until 1950 when she was registered in the 1950 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a> of American Yachts, as Evening Star by John P. Hazzard, from Morehead City, North Carolina. During this period, she received a new diesel engine, a Bermudan staysail rig, and new sails.By 1955, she was renamed Guinevere and registered in the 1955 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a> Of Yachts, as in New York, under Mrs Edgar Palmer. She was then sold in 1960 to charter captain Walter Boudreau, who renamed her Le Voyageur and offered sailing charters in the Caribbean.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332323/image/large-92033a00497110a31ce9c846f9a53b79.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332323">Despite this, after just five years, Boudreau was talked into selling her to one of his charter guests. He later regretted this decision and bought her back in the late 1960s, this time renaming her Janeen, after his daughter. Janeen was eventually sold in 1975 to Carlo Monzino, a great art lover, who renamed her Kebyar and owned her until 1979. The boat reached Monaco in the autumn, where she underwent another quick refit that was to last till summer 1976.In 1979, Italian publisher and film producer Alberto Rizzoli purchased and renamed the yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> again. This also marked the start of her restoration journey at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4793" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri Navali Beconcini (Company)">Beconcini</a> shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. Between 1979 to 1982 she was completely dismantled and reconstructed, with everything restored, except for her original interior and her schooner staysail rig, which was fitted in 1949. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332324/image/large-485a026400200cb1c7cb57be698ad0dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332324">Alberto Rizzoli continued to sail <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> until the end of 1988 when he sold her to a Neapolitan, Wolf Chitis. Six years later, she was sold to American Thomas J. Perkins by Mike Horsley of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>; and upon finding another vessel already registered as Mariette, he renamed her Mariette of 1915. Perkins appointed Tom Eaton as skipper, who convinced his owner to restore the boat to her original topsail gaff schooner rig.&nbsp;The original plans and data of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> were obtained from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where Nathanael Greene Herreshoff’s archives are held. Using these plans, her rig was constructed by legendary rigger Harry Spencer of Cowes and installed at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4793" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri Navali Beconcini (Company)">Beconcini</a> yard in Italy. In spring 1995 her hull was repaired again, as well as modifications made to her deck, with her wheel placed into a sunken cockpit. By the summer of 1995, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> was competing in Mediterranean classic yacht regattas under her new rig, earning many awards and accolades, before being sold again in 2005.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252022/image/large-0b1abc54fc5a92a9b9423fe9af8e91f4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252022">In 2000, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> completed a major refit at Tréhard in France, which saw her sails replaced, before she made her first visit to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a> Falmouth facility in February 2010 for a pre-summer refit. She returned for minor works in spring 2012, &nbsp;ahead of the Pendennis Cup. In autumn 2017, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> returned to Falmouth for a more extensive refit, in partnership with her crew. The refit saw her deck and sub-deck replaced entirely, with all but two deckhouses removed, re-varnished and put back into position.Internally her saloon saw a new flue installed for the wood burner and headlining fully replaced, while the guest and owner’s staterooms were renewed with carpet throughout, including an update of all electrical fixtures.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311777/image/large-8c23885028c0decdc5a69a3b0c563a75.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311777"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311774/image/large-ade0afb253452d38b0a9aea2d5adaf24.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311774">The interior of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> is a time capsule in itself, capturing the essence of sailing tradition from over a century ago. Her walls are adorned by beautiful wooden panelling, intricate golden light fixtures, and artworks centred around sailing. She can comfortably accommodate up to six guests across three sumptuous staterooms, all finished in her traditional interior styling. She features a master suite with its own separate office, along with one twin stateroom and a bunk stateroom.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311778/image/large-9f1bb2469872d936905db3c0d63ad58d.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311778"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311781/image/large-8f645245e34b321384e16cf6374eea01.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311781">But <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> is not just a showpiece; she is a formidable performer on the water. Her powerful sail plan, combined with a deep keel and balanced hull design, ensures exceptional sailing performance and stability. Towards her midship, she features an alfresco dining area with additional seating, sheltered by a removable awning. Guests are also never far from the water, with a ladder on her starboard side providing direct access. The 42.06-metre sailing yacht Mariette of 1915 has begun her fourth refit at the English shipyard Pendennis. As her name suggests, Mariette of 1915&nbsp;is over 100 years old and is one of the world’s most historic sailing yachts.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/15886/image/large-641d4887b62c57e46af934ac37813aca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15886">With three previous refits at Pendennis in the past seven years, her latest refit is the most extensive overhaul in recent years. Previously, the yard fitted folding propellers and prepared her for racing in the 2012 and 2014 Pendennis Cups.&nbsp;Her previous refit projects include a rebuild by Beconcini in La Spezia in 1982 and a refit at Trehard in 2000 where her sails were replaced. Mariette of 1915&nbsp;was originally built by the US-based Herreshoff in 1915.&nbsp;On board, she accommodates up to eight guests and eight crewmembers. Powered by twin 150hp Caterpillar 3208 diesel engines, she has a top speed of 11 knots and a cruising speed of 10 knots.Mariette of 1915 arrived at the Falmouth yard on 1st September with her relaunch scheduled for spring 2018. The 42.06-metre sailing yacht will undergo metal repairs to her hull and superstructure, with a new deck, new engine room layout and a hull paint included in the refit work.&nbsp;

The fourth race of the Pendennis Cup 2014 took place in Falmouth Bay, which saw Velacarina take the cup.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/149025/image/large-8c6e1d857bb35e55018acd2fc36b91ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/149025">The yacht had a great start to the race, whilst competing vessel Kelpie also performed excellently. A delayed start on day 3 of the Pendennis Cup was to provide ideal conditions for another fantastic days' racing with the winds filling in from the north and blue skies. The yachts paraded around the bay providing another beautiful spectacle off the coast of Falmouth.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/148867/image/large-ecc3fdb1b00455d16b55609a514b5318.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/148867">Day 3 Kelpie was first across the line, followed 3 minutes later by Velacarina, Adix, Mariette and Christopher and the Breakaway. As they made final approaches, all three passed dramatically close to the start buoy making for one of the most exciting starts of the week. The yachts flew northwards towards St Anthony’s Lighthouse, and then took a starboard tack towards the first ‘Tango’ mark. Breakaway flew off the start line, quickly gaining on the classic yachts, passing Mariette and Adix on the beat.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/148868/image/large-28dc8bdfdfb081209d0b0fb7460588d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/148868">Velacarina soon took the lead of the group which she maintained for the next hour. She held her bright orange kite down to the Manacles buoy ahead of Christopher with her famous red chilli ballooning in the breeze. Breakaway followed not 5 minutes behind her maintaining a 12knot pace. The classics looked spectacular behind them, Mariette launching her spinnaker with Kelpie and Adix battling each other on the downwind leg. They maintained this order down to the Manacles, accompanied again by a beautiful pod of dolphins with Kelpie and Adix having the closest battle.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/148869/image/large-2008313a09a40fe690c37e1cf0677ffa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/148869">Velacarina appeared to have the advantage but was caught by Christopher and Breakaway on the last turn at the ‘Old Wall mark. Racing was tight as they all tacked to port within a minute of each other towards 'Gylly Beach'. Christopher was closely pursued by Breakaway until the finish line, crossing the line less than a minute after the larger yacht. Velacarina was close behind her rivals in third and stole the race victory by just under 30 seconds on corrected time. The beautiful smaller classics have provided a gorgeous site in the bay, with colourful spinnakers flying closer to shore.The tight racing throughout Day 3 leaves Velacarina in first place overall on amended time, but with just 2 points separating the leading yachts Velacarina and Christopher. Tomorrow will be an exciting day with all to play for and of course the finale of the red arrows to look forward to.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/148871/image/large-ea34d3ca5a1e91be2ef32fba9a883120.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/148871">Day4 As the yachts waited in anticipation on the still waters of Falmouth Bay a party atmosphere prevailed, with water balloons and cannons firing off throughout the fleet during build up start of the fourth race of the Pendennis Cup 2014. It seemed as though there would not be a contest at all as the wind held off, but just 15minutes before the race was due to be called off an off shore breeze started to build gradually edging across the bay – the final race was on!<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/148872/image/large-2f8dacb6421201f362c22e719217a199.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/148872">A short course was drawn up by the Race Committee, with the initial leg sailing into the ‘Gylly Beach’ mark. Gusts of 12-14 knots combined with the shortened course created exciting close- quarters racing surrounded by a building spectator fleet in anticipation of the Red Arrows display. Velacarina had a great start flying first around the ‘Old Wall’ mark, sailing down to ‘Tango’. Kelpie, who was helmed by her Owner for the first time during the regatta, performed excellently. This lead pair were closely followed by Christopher, then the impressive schooners Adix and Mariette with Breakaway gaining from behind.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/148873/image/large-5f8b9a85defa266b2056a409f84a068f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/148873">With tight sailing throughout the yachts rounded ‘Tango’ in dramatically close succession. However, it was to be Velacarina’s race, maintaining her lead throughout, storming first over the finish line and taking victory of the 2014 Pendennis Cup. Kelpie achieved her best result of the week, taking second place on corrected time, pushing her ahead of Adix and Mariette making her fourth overall and winner of the Spencer Rigging Schooner award. Christopher completed the week in second place overall, after her first week of racing in the UK. She was awarded the Ward Williams prize for Starting Prowess, with an impressive average starting record of just 7 seconds within her allotted start time throughout the week. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/148874/image/large-56ca9aab64de9a30c3c45bd580a66064.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/148874">The competition between the Little Dennis yachts was no less exciting. The elegantly beautiful fleet of smaller classics had been closely matched all week, with Firebrand and Cerinthe tussling for the lead on each race. All yachts were tight around each mark, with the final elapsed time less than 4 minutes between the first and last boat. Firebrand completed Race 4 just 20seconds ahead of Cerinthe at the final gun, but on adjusted time first place went to Cerinthe by a mere 20 seconds. Although Cerinthe and Firebrand finished the regatta equal on points it was to be Cerinthe’s victory, awarded first place in the Little Dennis Cup on the race count back system.

Tight racing at the Pendennis Cup

Initially founded in 2008 the Pendennis Cup has grown year on year, creating a unique opportunity for classic and modern superyachts to showcase their sailing capabilities in the dramatic waters of Cornwall. Each of the four racing days usually brings its own unique set of conditions as Greg Perkins, Captain of Adela, explains: “Compared to other regattas we have competed in the racing is good as generally there is plenty of wind and the tidal waters make it tactically challenging. Freedom Marine has sold the 122’ classic motor yacht <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/260">Atlantide</a> belonging to Tom Perkins. Freedom Marine’s David Campbell acted for both the buyer and seller. Campbell first worked with Perkins in the spring of 2011 when he found Perkins the 125’ Expedition Yacht Dr. No. She was purchased to carry his personal submarine. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141402/image/large-1a32bbd3ef6ec5729483078a32f04937.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125197">As an avid yachtsman Perkins has travelled the world with his fleet of super yachts including the 2 x Perini Navi S/Y <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2359">Andromeda la Dea</a>, the 1915 classic 137’ Herreshoff racing schooner <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190">Mariette</a> and his former 289’ <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385">Maltese Falcon</a>; which is perhaps the greatest sailboat ever built. Atlantide was launched in 1930 by Philip and Sons in Dartmouth, UK, this classic 122’ Motor Yacht was originally designed by the gifted English Naval Architect Alfred Mylne (the designer of the original Royal Yacht Britannia) for Sir William Burton. Originally christened as Caleta, Atlantide has a significant history; from her role in evacuating allied troops during WWII to her impressive pedigree of owners. Atlantide’s distinguished owners, yachtsmen similar to Perkins, in their time, have kept her in impeccable condition. Perkins acquired Atlantide in 1998, at which time she underwent a complete rebuild. Her hull was reconstructed at the Manoel Island Shipyard of Malta and the new superstructure and interior was caringly restored and fitted out by Camper and Nicholson only a short distance from where she was originally built by Philip and Sons. Overall external and interior design was undertaken by Ken Freivokh Design. Perkins had brought her back to her original designed purpose as a gentleman's motor yacht and tender to a racing yacht. From 1999 through 2005, Atlantide had the enviable roll as support vessel to her owner’s 1915, 137’ classic Herreshoff racing schooner ‘Mariette’. In 2006, Tom Perkins launched the remarkable 289’ Maltese Falcon. Atlantide and “The Falcon” were show stoppers at every port in which they dropped anchor. On her own, Atlantide also cruised to distant points on the globe including the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Canada's East and West coasts and Norway's high northern latitudes. After many years of enjoyment she is still kept in pristine condition, and this one-of-a-kind motor yacht with an unprecedented history. Atlantide was asking 5,000,000 Euro. Classic superyacht Atlantide sold

The 2012 Westward Cup Prizegiving, held in the Pavilion at the Royal Yacht Squadron on Saturday evening (16 June 2012) brought to an end some sublime days of racing and social events put on by the three organising clubs for this year’s invitational event, namely the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS), the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) and the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139737/image/large-0f473a08ded8ab22a1365faa1a9432a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139737">The RYS Commodore Michael Campbell welcomed the assembled gathering of around 300 guests including the owners, captains and crews of the participating yachts, Eleonora, Mariette and Mariquita. The 2012 Westward Cup Prizegiving

Eleonora, Mariette and Mariquita, the three Big Class yachts taking part in the 2nd running of the Westward Cup in Cowes this week, have faced four days of the best and worst that the British weather could throw at them. The owners and their guests have been enjoying this prestigious and unique invitational yachting event run by the Royal Yacht Squadron, the New York Yacht Club and the Yacht Club de Monaco since Monday. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139693/image/large-67948e876b0f1cf94c25babce95e5b99.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139693">A number of difficult weather-related decisions have had to be taken by the PRO, David Aisher, who stressed that all decisions relating to course-setting have been taken in close collaboration with the owners and their captains on a daily or twice daily basis. “This has been an inclusive event,” commented Mr Aisher, ‘with the owners enjoying a wonderful week of good racing and great social events. Everyone has been supportive of the race management this week, despite the difficulties we have been facing with the weather.” The opening day of racing on Tuesday was challenging enough, with wind speeds ranging from 15-18 knots lowering to 5 knots along parts of the course by the afternoon. That distinct lack of wind at the beginning of the week ended up forcing a decision to cancel racing altogether on Wednesday. Thursday morning’s racing was superb for all three yachts but by the afternoon the winds had increased from the south-east, strengthening to 20-25 knots and Mariquita’s Captain, Jim Thom, took the decision not to race in the afternoon. The remaining competitors raced in the Eastern Solent achieving some excellent speeds but the sea state was very lumpy by the time they had completed Race Three in the overall series. By friday morning, the forecast was looking to wreak havoc with the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Race Officers’ course plans, as 40+ knots were being reported in Hurst Narrows! Two yachts managed to get in a short race this morning with Eleonora taking line honours ahead of Mariette. Mariquita’s team took the decision early on not to go racing in potentially damaging winds. With the Solent forecast for saturday showing predicted gale force winds gusting to 50 knots, it has been agreed to abandon all further racing in the Westward Cup 2012 so there was no racing on the final day, Saturday 16 June. Day three of the 2012 Westward Cup

After a damp and windless Wednesday morning, the Race Officers at the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) took the decision to abandon racing for the three Big Class yachts vying for the Westward Cup this week in Cowes, Isle of Wight. However, the gloomy weather failed to dampen the spirits of owners and guests however and, indeed, Mariette and Mariquita decided to get in some some practice sailing as the wind picked up and the sky started to turn a pale shade of blue. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139660/image/large-90e200b83250c197ebd799038013a7d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139660">Today, with all eyes on the weather forecast and watching out for today’s expected low, the Race Officers at the Royal Yacht Squadron decided not to send the yachts around the Island as originally planned and instead ensured they got in two terrific races in the Eastern Solent, racing for the YCM (Yacht Club de Monaco) Trophy. The first race took the fleet of three classic Big Class yachts, Eleonora, 49.5m LOA (160ft), Mariette, 42.06m (138ft) and Mariquita, 38.1m (125ft) from the RYS line to the east to Warner, past the Forts at Seaview, back up the central Solent to South Bramble, to Gurnard and finishing on the RYS line to the delight of the mass of spectators at Princes Green and on Cowes Parade. The 28nm race was won by Mariette, followed by Mariquita with Eleonora in third place. Conditions were beginning to freshen and it was a very successful race. This afternoon’s racing had the yachts heading east once again to the mark at Mother Bank, thence to East Bramble followed by a long run to West Lepe, and back up the Western Solent to the finish at the RYS. Conditions were deteriorating as the wind increased from the south-east, strengthening to 20-25 knots, not damaging but perhaps a little hard on some of the older yachts and indeed Mariquita decided to call it a day and returned home to base before even starting this afternoon’s race. Richard Salaman, Safety Officer, commented, “In terms of the withdrawal of Mariquita, the decision taken by the Captain, Jim Thom, not to start the second race, was probably wise in the deteriorating conditions.” For the remaining two yachts, they had a hard time of it until they got to Mother Bank where they turned north-west to East Bramble which gave them an excellent wind and they obtained some very good speeds all the way to West Lepe and then across the finishing line by which time the sea state was becoming very lumpy. Looking ahead to tomorrow, there is a deepening depression tracking north from Biscay with a pressure prediction of 982Mbs which on its present rack could produce winds in excess of Force 5-7. There is some uncertainty as to the exact track it is going to take and a decision will be taken at 0830 on Friday as to whether racing is going to be possible on Friday. Westward Cup day two race report

The 2nd running of the Westward Cup commenced on the water yesterday at 1100hrs, bringing together the cream of the world’s Big Class yachts in a blaze of excitement and anticipation of some great racing in Solent waters for the owners and their guests. Eleonora, Mariette and Mariquita also created a breathtaking sight for the spectators on Cowes Parade and Princes Green as the yachts prepared for their start on the Royal Yacht Squadron line. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139620/image/large-23806caa629ebfb5106381dcc670b8d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139620">The Westward Cup is being run by the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS), the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) and the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM). These three prestigious clubs have again joined forces to revive Big Class yachting in Cowes and Mr Zbynek Zak, the originator of the event in 2010 celebrating the 100th anniversary of the launch of the racing schooner Westward in 1910, says he is equally proud and delighted to be back in Cowes. As the boats set off they made a stunning sight powering up under full sail in a northerly breeze of 15-18 knots and heading off into the western Solent with Mariette as the front runner. The course of 29nm saw the fleet experience variable wind speeds with winds decreasing severely as the race progressed and Eleonora fell behind with Mariette and Mariquita enjoying a spot of match racing. David Aisher, Principal Race Officer, commenting after racing yesterday afternoon, said, "Conditions were terrific first thing, but the wind went left, later abated and was recorded at 5 knots at one point which made it a struggle for the largest boat in the fleet, Eleonora." The two ‘smaller’ yachts were racing with their full race crew complement today plus their guests whilst Eleonora are also hosting a group of young sailors between the ages of 18 to 23 on board this week. They are novices to this type of racing and have been invited by the RYS and NYYC to introduce some new blood into classic yacht racing. Mariquita took line honours finishing at 14.31.43, closely followed by Mariette 14.35.16 with Eleonora completing her first day’s racing in Cowes at 15.20.34. Day one of the 2012 Westward Cup

The Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) has confirmed the line-up of participating yachts racing in the second Westward Cup regatta, taking place between the 11th and the 16th June 2012. The competing yachts are Altair, Eleonora, Mariette and Mariquita. Also invited, but as yet unconfirmed, are Lulworth and Moonbeam IV. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138521/image/large-c82ec078f5dc19f53853ad3a06adee0b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137701">The Westward Cup is being run by an association of three of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world, the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS), the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) and the New York Yacht Club (NYYC). The organisers have set out to replicate a style, class and regatta atmosphere matching the period when Westward and the Big Class yachts all raced in Cowes, the birthplace of such elegant racing during the 1920s and 30s. The racing area will predominately be in the Solent and courses will be, where possible, set to mirror those used by Big Class yachts in those glory days. Safety is of course, paramount and these prestigious vessels will enjoy four days of racing, adhering to the “La Belle Classe by the YCM” racing guidelines, created in close consultation with traditional yacht captains and owners and applied in all the major classic yacht gatherings to ensure safe and gentlemanly racing. A “Round the Isle of Wight” race may be included, if weather permits. Provisional schedule The provisional schedule comprises four days of racing and one lay day. The Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) has confirmed that it has extended invitations to eight of the most beautiful Big Class yachts in the world to come and grace the shores of the Solent and race in the second edition of the Westward Cup regatta, taking place 11-16 June 2012. Run in association with the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) and the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) with the RYS as the Organising Authority, the Westward Cup was first held in July 2010 and was a tremendous success for everyone taking part. The RYS may also produce results under a modified CIM rule to enable comparison of results using a rule used at other regattas by these magnificent yachts. The Westward Cup 2012 confirmed

The sailing calendar for classic yachts in the Mediterranean includes stops in idyllic ports including Antibes, Monaco, and Cannes. But it is the finale in St Tropez that is the not-to-be-missed conclusion for classic and modern yachts alike. This year Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez – which began life as La Nioulargue – marks the 30th running of this prestigious event. The nearly 300-boat regatta brings together the finest collection of traditional yachts (vintage and spirit of tradition), as well as the other end of the spectrum: modern high-performance racers. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136797/image/large-4da5e1b90897d88d96e4a34ba39e8c66.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136797">Yesterday was the first scheduled day of racing for the Modern fleet, with the light 6-8 knot conditions on the Golfe de St Tropez causing a delayed start, all classes managed one race today. Racing for the Tradition classes begins today. Les Voiles' fleet is divided into Modern and Traditional; with almost 200 boats, the Modern classes make up the majority. Boats such as Mike Slade’s 100-foot (30 metre) super maxi, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/314">Leopard 3</a>, which held the monohull course record in the Rolex Fastnet Race until this year; the impeccably restored 1930s-era J-Class <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276">Shamrock</a>; Swan yachts from the popular one-design Swan 42 to the Swan 112 <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1319">Highland Breeze</a>, as well as a good showing from the Wally fleet of 80 – 130 footers. But it is the Traditional fleet – 84-strong this year – that impresses. The “grande dame” of the fleet is the 136-foot (41.5m) Herreshoff schooner, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3188">Elena</a>. She is not alone among yachts over the 100-foot mark, joined by <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1818">Cambria</a>, the Fife-designed 23m class sloop; the Herreshoff schooner, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190">Mariette of 1915</a>, and the Fife gaff schooner, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2085">Altair</a>, which raced successfully for nearly 50 years before being brought back to impeccable condition in 1985 at Fairlie Restorations in the UK. Rounding out the ‘bigger’ boat fleet is the more recently launched <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2343">Sunshine</a>, built in out of teak and rosewood in Myanmar. Equally impressive are the 15-meter class yachts, the elegant Tuiga (1909) and Mariska (1908). Though 15 metres (50 feet) on the waterline, with their long bow and stern overhangs and bowsprit, they stretch to 90 stunning feet overall. Along with these two is the recently re-launched Fife III-designed 15-metre Hispania, originally built for the King of Spain in 1909 – but unfortunately the Spanish boat had to withdraw from Les Voiles. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136798/image/large-b2bb2be0852542526164cec55069b6a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136798">The idea for La Nioulargue is a now legendary story that took place in 1981 at Club 55, Patrice de Colmont’s ultra-chic beach bar and restaurant on Pampelonne Beach. It began as a casual barroom bet between the 12-metre Ikra, skippered by Jean Laurin and Pride, a Swan 44 owned by Dick Jayson, an American who was cruising in the Mediterranean at that time. Three decades later the regatta endures, with tweaks and fine-tuning along the way. In the late 1990s, La Niolargue morphed into Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez and its popularity has only grown. Ikra still competes here. Now owned by Frenchman Yves-Marie Morault, the 12-metre won the Rolex Trophy in 2010 and Morault and crew are back this year to defend. The Rolex Trophy is a competition within the Tradition division for all boats over 16 metres on deck. The winning boat receives the Rolex Trophy and a Rolex timepiece. First awarded in 2006, this year more than 50 boats are eligible for the Trophy, among these Graham Walker’s two-time winner Rowdy, a Herreshoff-designed New York 40. Past Rolex Trophy winners include: 2010 – Ikra, 12-metre. Originally built as Kurrewa V, a trial horse for the Royal Thames YC for the 1964 America’s Cup. Later owned by Baron Bich, who sold it in 1977, after which it was converted for racing/cruising in the Mediterranean. 2008 &amp; 2009 – Rowdy, Herreshoff-designed New York 40 class. Commissioned by the New York Yacht Club and built in 1916, this design is 40 feet on the waterline (approx 65 ft LOA). 2007 – Agneta, 25-metre yawl, built in 1951. Agneta’s beautiful varnished mahogany hull and tanbark sails are unmistakable on the water. 2006 – So Fong, 25 metre Marconi-rigged schooner. Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez celebrates 30 years

After the first 2 days of racing the yachts were determined to use the strong winds to their full advantage on day 3. On Wednesday all yachts had a day’s rest from sailing during which all boats underwent maintenance, including fixing Adela’s 1 tonne spinnaker which was split on Tuesday and repairing the damaged mainsail. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132227/image/large-cb3edef84f36ef4504700f6f5d814dd0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132227">30 seconds to the start <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190">Mariette</a> was sailing windward of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2075">Adela</a> towards the line with Mariquita and Velacarina a little off the pace. The course was set to the northerly wind direction with a beat towards Gyllngvase Beach area as the first leg. Mariette was set with the Jackyard in place and Mariquita with her working topsail. Mariette tacked towards the east coastline looking for an inshore advantage and Adela stayed offshore heading towards the Helford before tacking back to the mark near Gyllyngvase Beach. Mariquita was blocked by Velacarina at the start but after the first tack and cross over Mariquita had taken the third place position and passed the stern of Mariette. Adela had a good lift approaching the Helford and then rounded the mark first ahead of the rest of the fleet. Mariette was second round with Mariquita close behind doing well in the lighter breeze. Velacarina started to launch her spinnaker on the leg to the Range A mark but the wind started to shift towards the west and gained strength to make it more of a close reach. Mariette and Mariquita stayed very close on this leg of the race with Velacarina just behind and Adela out in front rounding 10 minutes ahead. She would need to increase this lead significantly to win on handicap. The yachts sailed close hauled towards the Veryan mark passed Dodman Point with the wind increasing above 20mph. Mariette was able to capitalise on the breeze and pulled away from Mariquita and Velacarina. Mariette missed the lay line for the mark and had to put in an additional tack allowing Mariquita to gain ground and for Adela to extend her lead who judged the strong tide well. The sun came out for the approach to the finish, the line set between the mouth of the Helford and the Manacles. Adela had increased her lead and was over the line just under thirty minutes ahead of Mariette, enough to secure her second victory in the regatta ahead of Mariette, Mariquita and Velacarina. Pinuccia sailed the course on her own today with Tomahawk in the final throws of her mast repair at Pendennis Shipyard. Strong winds on day 3 of the Pendennis Cup

As the sea mist hung over the harbour, Day 1 of the Pendennis Cup began with a dramatic start in the Big Class as Adela, Mariquita, Mariette and Velacarina planned their approach to the start line. Mariquita was set flying with her working topsail and Mariette with the jackyard. With one minute to go all four yachts were on starboard approaching the line jostling for position with Velacarina to windward. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132204/image/large-5bef6c4385f53b23afb57c188c73786e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132204">As the countdown commenced it was extremely tight with the red protest flags raised on three of the yachts and Velacarina hitting the pin as she crossed the line. Mariette held the lead over the line followed by Adela on the first beat to the windward mark towards the Helford River. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132205/image/large-edd7f30173aabd0bda0e9fa1962ebe2f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132205">The small class followed 10 minutes later, a less dramatic start perhaps, but still a wonderful sight watching Pinuccia and Tomahawk dominating the harbour. Pinuccia was first over on port tack. However it wasn’t long before their class had its own drama as Tomahawk’s mast broke right at the top just as she approached the first mark, meaning she had to retire early. Throughout the first third of the race Adela, Mariquita and Mariette remained close, chasing each other up to the first mark before rounding and setting the downwind sails. Adela rounded first followed by Mariquita and then Mariette who over stood the mark. Quite a spectacle with the spinnakers of Adela and Mariquita and Mariette with the gollywobbler flying. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132206/image/large-483bb3a455f1101a77aff8747ca8c3e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132206">It was a dramatic sight as they passed between Gull Rock and the Roseland Peninsula, the fog-shrouded cliffs behind them. After passing round the mark Adela really took control of the race, taking a heading towards the coastline whilst Mariquita and Mariette sailed out to sea, planning for a later tack. Velacarina followed the coastal line too, but without the sail volume of the larger boats she fell behind. Adela soon disappeared off into the clouds towards the Manacles, whilst Mariquita and Mariette battled for second place. Mariquita tacked inshore to St Anthony lighthouse and took advantage of a wind shift opening up a good lead on Mariette, gaining on Adela. Adela led the reach to the finish followed by Mariquita, Mariette and Velacarina. A superb day on the water not without drama with a steady wind all boats heeled over, cap rails in the water, providing a stunning sight for the following fleet of over 12 spectator and press boats. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132207/image/large-ef632c5d995781f3e845bac38275d571.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132207">The second day of the Pendennis Cup once again started with grey skies and drizzle, however with a good wind it promised to be another day of close action around the course. With Tomahawk’s mast being fixed in the Pendennis workshops and Pinuccia withdrawing due to stronger winds it was a day for the big yachts to show off their speed. Once again it was a close start with Adela and Mariette battling at the start line, both having good starts fully powered up as they crossed between the starting buoy and committee boat. Mariquita reefed in her main to make the most of the winds but Adela took an early lead on the beat down to the first mark. As she rounded Helford she launched her spinnaker, providing the stunning sight of this beautiful 55.5m yacht in full sail. Mariette, Mariquita and Velacarina followed behind up to the second mark at Veryan, with Velacarina launching her mizzen sail on the downward leg. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132208/image/large-57c5d4ca9dbca21469f7504485fdb720.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132208">Adela had a strong lead on this leg however it was her turn to experience the unexpected dramas of racing as during a jibe her spinnaker wrapped and split, but she managed to sustain her lead down towards the Manacles mark. The spectator boat, with a top speed of approximately 10 knots, struggled to keep close to these amazing vessels as they powered down the course. As the yachts rounded the final mark Adela held her lead, the sun shining through the clouds to light her way to the finish line. Mariette achieved speeds of over 16 knots was the overall winner of the day based on adapted time. Day 1 and day 2 of the Pendennis Cup

It is now less than 1 week to go until Pendennis hosts the 2nd Pendennis Cup in Falmouth. Following the success of 2008 we have seven yachts confirmed with potentially more still interested. With over 200 crew visiting for the week’s racing and another 150 guests the event will provide plenty of excitement and entertainment on and off the water. With a combination of classic beauty and power when at full sail these yachts will provide an impressive spectacle as they race in and around Falmouth Bay. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132078/image/large-8446544c2b17a3ce2217542a56c85e6a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132078">The largest yacht we have attending is <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2075">Adela</a> at an impressive 55.5m and the smallest is Pinuccia at 14.6m. The Cup will be managed by the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association and the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club who have designed several different courses each one challenging the yachts to exploit their full potential and provide five days of exhilarating racing. The Race Office, centred in the National Maritime Museum’s Learning Centre, will also have information about each day’s course. The Pendennis Cup runs from Monday 9th to Saturday 14th August, with the boats setting sail daily (except for Wednesday) from Port Pendennis Marina between 9:00 -10:00am. Each race will begin at 11:00am with the boats returning to the marina at about 3:00pm. There is an opportunity to glimpse these glorious boats underway from Pendennis Point and from the viewing balcony at the National Maritime Museum where Pendennis will host a fascinating exhibition about building and racing these classic superyachts. The excitement builds before the Pendennis Cup 2010

After celebrating her 100th anniversary in September 2009, Monaco’s 15 M IR maritime ambassador launched her new regatta season in style by winning the Westward Cup in Cowes. Organised from 5 to 10 July 2010, the Westward Cup 2010 was an initiative of Zbynek Zak, owner of Eleonora to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the launch of the original Westward. This lovely schooner was launched on 31 March 1910 as hull number 692 at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA. She was designed by the “Wizard of Bristol”, Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, the man behind the America’s Cup defenders which resisted all six challenges from 1893 to 1920. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131903/image/large-8c8f65f4c8e316b49c726f4360e3126a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131903">Her dimensions were: length overall 160 ft (49.5 m), length on deck 135 ft (41.5 m), length on waterline 96 ft (29.30 m), beam 27 ft (8.20 m), draft 17 ft (5.20 m) and sail area 12,000 sq ft (1’115 m²). Her displacement was 214 tons. Nathanael Greene Herreshoff is certainly the most famous and accomplished American yacht designer and builder of all times. For some 75 years “Capt. Nat”, as he was called, dominated the naval design fraternity as an innovator who created vessels that were advanced and extreme, but always, always beautiful. For a week Mariquita, Mariette, Eleonora and Tuiga, who had come to Cowes from the Mediterranean especially for the event, raced in the Solent. The aim was to recreate the ambiance, style and elegance of the Big Class classic yacht regattas of the 1910s and 1930s when Westward raced in Cowes. It was an exceptional event which enjoyed the support of the Royal Yacht Squadron, the New York Yacht Club and the Yacht Club de Monaco through La Belle Classe. It was the first time that these prestigious Yacht Clubs had agreed to work together and pool their skills for a centenary. For the occasion, the crew on Tuiga were nearly all members of the Yacht Club de Monaco who were joined by tactician, Harold Cudmore, a legend on the British sailing scene having taken part in many America’s Cup races. Also on board was David Arnold, a sailor who originates from Cowes and is used to the sandbanks and subtleties of the Solent’s currents which are among the strongest in Europe. From day one Tuiga, helmed by the YCM’s Secretary General Bernard d’Alessandri, demonstrated her racing qualities and desire to repeat her 2008 success when she won Cowes Week. Just 27 seconds! That was the narrow gap which separated the Monegasque yacht, second in real time, from Mariquita at the end of the first tightly fought race which lasted three hours and 20 minutes. The next day in a steady 15-20 knot wind, which favoured the big boats from the start, the crew on Tuiga had to concentrate hard throughout the 38 nautical mile course to limit as much as possible the lead her competitors were inevitably going to have in real time. Mariette crossed the line first with an average speed of nine knots (!) followed by Eleonora and Mariquita. Tuiga achieved her objective and finished second in compensated time. On the third day of racing, the 32 nautical mile course with the tide and 10 marks to get round proved a real challenge. It was to require more manoeuvres by all the crews than on the previous days. Tuiga and Mariquita had the best starts and seized the lead from the first tacks over the other two competitors. Tuiga is a real gem in these wind conditions and for nearly four hours the Monegasque 15 Metre was the equal of Mariquita. It was only on the last tack that the latter drew ahead and crossed the line first in real time. On the last day of racing which took the fleet round the Needles, the western-most point of the Isle of Wight, Tuiga clinched victory not only in compensated time but also in real time with an average speed of seven and a half knots. And so Tuiga wins the Westward Cup 2010. The Yacht Club de Monaco is delighted not only with this win but also for having lived up yet again to the expectations of the “Spirit of Tuiga” Club which unites all those who love this 1909 Fife design. She really is the finest maritime ambassador that the Principality could hope to have today. Tuiga wins the Westward Cup in Cowes

Mariette is one of the largest competitors taking part in the Pendennis Cup with a length overall of 42.05m. Built in the USA in 1915, she is a stunning Herreshoff designed classic schooner. Mariette’s pre-summer refit began in February and has been completed with the reinstatement of her huge sailing rig, with the mast alone measuring over 36m long. The complete programme of work included an engineering overhaul and a full refit of her generator space, including the replacement of her generators. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131689/image/large-447356aa7bbf4c734a5128d4d1d466ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131689">To celebrate a successful refurbishment and as a thank you to Pendennis Charlie Rowe, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190">Mariette</a>’s captain, invited members of the refit team to be guests on board the vessel during her 2 day sea trial. “Mariette is back in the water and ready to sail again. Mariette takes Pendennis workforce on the water

The Owners and Captains of the Big Class classic sailing yachts Cambria, Mariette, and Eleonora (Founding Members) met on 26th March 2010 and agreed to found the Big Class Association (BCA). This Association has resulted from discussions held over recent years amongst the Owners and Captains of the large classic sailing yachts who have agreed that there is a need to, amongst other things; represent the interests of this group of yachts. The purpose of the BCA is to: <ul> <li>represent the interests of the Big Class yachts with organisers and sponsors of classic yacht regattas, race committees, and rating bodies, and other parties involved in classic yacht sailing activities</li> <li>to be actively and closely involved in the organisation of Big Class regattas in the spirit and atmosphere of the historical Big Class races as they were known in the 1910s – 1930s, similar to the Westward Cup 2010 that is being staged from 5th – 10th July in Cowes to commemorate the centenary of Westward’s launch and to initiate the revival of the Big Class racing</li> <li>develop and promote safety recommendations for racing the Big Class yachts</li> <li>to make available a pool of know-how and experience to owners and captains who are interested in building or restoring a Big Class sailing yacht</li> <li>agree on and implement a rating system applicable specifically to Big Class yachts</li> <li>develop a platform for sharing information and experience related to the activities of the Big Class yachts. </li>
</ul>In due time, the BCA will develop its own infrastructure, website, and other means of communication with its members and other interested parties. It is one of the key objectives of the Founding Members to invite in due course other Big Class yachts such as Altair, Britannia, Elena, Germania, Lulworth, and Thendara to join the BCA. Other yachts may be invited to join as and when the BCA agrees their membership. Following the Westward Cup 2010 in July in Cowes, the Founding Members are already considering Big Class invitational racing events in June 2011 in the Mediterranean and in 2012 in the Solent. Racing at the 10th edition of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez began this morning under bright sun and almost summer conditions. With a promising breeze at the start that later fell still, today was the first race for the Classics who enjoyed the chance to hoist their sails and race one another over a 24-mile coastal course. Leading the fleet home were Altair and Rowdy within a hair's breadth of one another. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125593/image/large-b144c6519cc5e92d383ba07af51d8f9b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125593">Today was also the first day of the Rolex Trophy, which is open to classic yachts over 16 metres in length. The winner of this trophy will only be known for certain when the overall scores are revealed on Saturday evening, adding to the suspense of what is sure to be an enthralling series. Whoever proves to be the winner, we may be confident that she will have been the most sure-footed of those competing this week. Stephens changed the face of yacht design forever. Today we look towards William Fife Jr, another one of the great classic yacht designers, whose success spanned both the 19th and 20th Centuries. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125595/image/large-fff11f4502ea642051206a3a07c8d5a5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125595">Grandson and son of William Fife I and II, William Fife III (Fife Junior) was a descendant of a long line of family naval architects. Born in 1857 in Fairlie, on the West Coast of Scotland, William Fife Jr. grew up surrounded by his father's and grandfather's boat designs. Quickly initiated into the family business, Fife Jr. did not have long to wait before he made his own name in the industry. His drawings quickly seduced some of the greatest European families and the second yacht Fife Jr drew-up was Dragon, from which his trademark dragon signature was born; a symbol found on the bow of every vessel he designed from this point on. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125596/image/large-9b2c376605a9c266cddb171bd8af4919.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125596">In 1879 he completed the 190-ton schooner that was property of Jean Baptiste Charcot and that sailed under the name Why Not. Another yacht, originally named Yum, was finished by the Fairlie shipyard in 1898 and became famous under the name Pen Duick. By this time already Fife Jr was internationally recognized for the quality and beauty of the boats he designed and constructed. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125597/image/large-8703cf2172603c0ad451f3b852d663c2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125597">Fife Jr soon became involved in the heady world of the America's Cup, notably drawing a series of boats named Shamrock for the challenges put forward by tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton. Fife Jr's Shamrocks were ultimately unsuccessful, losing to Columbia in 1899 and to Reliance in 1903. This was not his only venture into thoroughbred racing yachts. Fife was responsible for some of the greatest and fastest 15 and 19-metre boats of the period after the first International Rule was established in 1906. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125598/image/large-2bc5f6b2343658c11718f96d6f2dec16.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125598">William Fife Jr was a prolific architect often creating over 50 designs annually, the majority of those drawings coming to life within a year. In 1903, Moonbeam of Fife was completed for Charles Plumtree Johnson and, it was following the war that Johnson ordered another of Fife Jr's most famous designs still in existence today: Moonbeam IV, completed in 1920. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125599/image/large-6389558408ae4dfdf7d8371c1cd01301.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125599">For over 50 years Fife Jr's yachts won races all over the world and he designed almost 1000 during his career, which continued into his late seventies (Latifa was completed in 1935 when he was 78 years old). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125600/image/large-7c3ee8716a967646fb85432efdc265f4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125600">Today no one knows exactly how many of Fife Jr's designs still exist, although there are thought to be about 100, perhaps half of which are still on the water, lovingly restored and cared for by justifiably proud owners. Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez 2008 is proud to welcome some of those here to participate in the regatta. Any fellow Scotsman in Saint Tropez this week will take pride in seeing potential Rolex Trophy winners Cambria, Altair, Mariquita, Irina VII, Nan of Fife, Moonbeam III and Moonbeam IV on the docks; enough great names to make all the sailors in the world dream of both past and present glory. Close classic racing and a Scotsman's designs in Saint Tropez

The Pendennis Cup came to a dramatic close on the 16th August after five days of spectacular racing out in Falmouth Bay, UK. The yachts fiercely competed for the Pendennis Cup in sometimes challenging conditions, providing drama and excitement for all to see. On two of the days the fleet was reduced in size due to winds of 30 knots plus and by mid week two swimmers were recorded as well as a broken fore main gaff on Mariette. Captain Charlie Wroe from S/Y Mariette commented, “It was a great regatta and our crew had lots of fun. We welcomed the experience to race in windy and boisterous conditions that we don’t typically see in the Med. We look forward to coming back.” <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125344/image/large-074bc0ce2bd5b19c5b493ec87a149b2d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125267">On the final day Lutine, Mariette and Altair all left the marina at Port Pendennis with a definite chance of taking the main prize. After a text book start, Altair held on to the lead in 30 knots plus, despite a dramatic challenge from Adix fully powered up on the downwind leg. Altair came tearing over the line to take the gun and the inaugural Pendennis Cup in style. The Cup was organised by Pendennis Shipyard as part of their 20th anniversary year and held as part of Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week 2008. Seven yachts in total competed for the Cup over 5 races between the 11th – 16th August (Wednesday was the designated lay day). Competing Yachts included Mariquita, Mariette, Altair, The Lady Anne, Adix, Lutine and Kelpie. Large yachts haven’t raced in Falmouth since 1911 and the regatta proved a huge hit with visitors and the local community, with hundreds of people lining the Cornish coastline to get a look at the spectacle. The fun didn’t stop on the water and the shoreside entertainment included a welcome evening at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, hog roast and joining in with the Falmouth Week festivities in St Mawes and the Event’s Square 70’s and Caribbean nights. The Pendennis Cup was originally organised as a one off regatta, but following on from its success and the feedback from both the crews and general public it is certain that the event will run again in the South West. S/Y Altair sails to success at the inaugral Pendennis Cup

The Pendennis Cup has had a flying start with two days of exciting sailing in Falmouth, UK. Winds of over 30 knots have created challenging racing conditions with very close starts and nail biting finishes. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125267/image/large-db62bdd89f995e4c770f4dbc0baa9a8b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125267">Yachts such as Adix, Mariquita, Altair, Mariette, Lutine, The Lady Anne and Kelpie have all been seen on the water, battling it out around the marks with two swimmers reported and a broken gaff. “We have had great schooner racing so far and for our first visit to Falmouth, it has been a fantastic experience for Altair and all the crew. We’ll definitely be coming back.” Stephane, Capt Altair The regatta is run as part of Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week and is part of the 20th anniversary celebrations for Pendennis Shipyard. Pendennis Shipyard has recently announced that their classic regatta for large yachts now has 5 confirmed entries. Sailing yachts Mariquita, Mariette, Altair, Lutine and Mascotte have all signed up for the event and will be sailing out in the bay during Falmouth Week from the 11th-16th August. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124716/image/large-fd0e0eaf748690489b0cc9aa3c86c758.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124716">The team organising the event have been promoting Falmouth and Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week heavily to the large yachts that will be in British waters for both the Fife regatta and the Classic Yacht regatta in the Solent. They are expecting more entries shortly, and we could see the yachts participating in the event rise to 12! The Port of Falmouth Sailing Association (POFSA) organisers of Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week is hopeful that the lure of the large yachts being in port will attract more competitors on to the water in all of the fleets and will add to the whole atmosphere of the week. Mark Osborne, Chairman of POFSA said “The attendance of these large classic Yachts at this year’s event has certainly caused a stir. We have received several requests from new competitors to Falmouth Week about coming to participate. We are confident of putting on a good show for everyone.” The event has attracted several high profile event partners from the local business community and the Superyacht World including Burgess Yachts, Cornish Cruising, Raymarine, the E-Tech Group, Henri Lloyd, Hill Dickinson, Lewmar, Port of Falmouth Sailing Association, Port Pendennis, Tim Haynes Ltd and Yachting World. Pendennis Cup going from strength to strength

Bill Bishop has been a professional artist since 1981 when he started to paint full time in watercolours; in 1985 on the advice of Bertram Newbury from the Parker Gallery in London, he started painting in oils. His first oil commission followed shortly after and came from the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth for a depiction of Windy Corner at the Battle of Jutland in 1914. This led to a further commission from the Mary Rose Trust for two paintings. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124398/image/large-6ed5e27608ddddecc1a5d8024cb9c8fb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124398">Bill’s speciality is marine art and his gallery of paintings is varied, with collectors all over the world having bought his exquisite work. The subjects vary from ‘The Battle of Trafalgar 21st October 1805 around 2.30pm’, to the famous RNLI Christmas card (Lifeboat Rescue circa 1900), and ’15 Metres off Cowes before 1914’. Other interests include classic sports cars, rowing at the Henley Royal Regatta and more contemporary subjects such as ‘Windsurfers on the Winner Bank’ and even a ‘Regatta Briefing in Grenada’. More recently he has painted commissioned works for classic yachts at regattas worldwide. His discriminating work is carefully researched in minute detail for historic precision, sail panels and colours, deck layout and even crew kit.
