An ambitious two week program saw her acquired, prepared for towage and loaded onto the 214.17-metre DYT semi-submersible Yacht Servant and delivered to Falmouth.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5467" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amazone39.62m (129'12&quot;)Vosper Thornycroft1936">Amazone</a> was unloaded and transferred to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis Shipyard</a>, where she will be refitted and restored. With a volume of 1,356 GT, the 91-metre superyacht underwent a refit from 2006 to 2007 at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>, and was then brought over to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blohm & Voss GmbH (Company)">Blohm &amp; Voss</a> from 2007 to 2009 where her old steam turbines were replaced by diesel engines. She has gone through a total of five years of restoration since being purchased by her current owner. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)John Brown & Sons1930">Nahlin</a> can accommodate up to 14 guests on board, 47 crew and has a maximum speed of 18 knots with a cruising speed of 14 knots.

SYT&nbsp;catches up with Will Christie, founder of yacht brokerage <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6451" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christie Yachts (Company)">Christie Yachts</a>, to find out what motivated him to set up his own firm, his predictions for the market in the coming years and how he believes <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6451" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christie Yachts (Company)">Christie Yachts</a> stands out from the crowd!&nbsp;You were Head of Sales at a top industry company previously, why have you now chosen to set up your own brokerage?After two decades in the industry I felt that I had the necessary credibility, experience, industry relationships and established client base to start out on my own. Many clients and industry colleagues had encouraged me to do this earlier in my career but various circumstances came into play that made now the right time to forge my own path. Timing is everything with such decisions. The current strength of the market and the way in which I predict yachting will only become more popular played a big part. I see a lot of opportunities for a focused, specialist outfit such as ours.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203685/image/large-bb4b49fe4b0994709fc1f6f575672336.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203685">What differentiates you and your company from the competition?More than ever clients want a trusted advisor closely by their side representing their interests when they are purchasing, constructing, or selling a yacht. They expect this advice to add quantifiably to the process, rather than just being supplied information that they could get through a simple Google search themselves. Christie Yachts is a specialist in this area with two decades of experience, providing really focused, personal and expert advice.For example, we aren’t a yacht management company trying to do yacht brokerage or a yacht brokerage trying to do yacht management - we will not be distracted by other services. Where we don’t offer a service, we will introduce clients to the very best fit for them in that area while clients will get the benefit of someone managing the entire process.&nbsp;In yacht construction, it is also important to build up a team that will get the very best end-result for a client. That means putting together a team, with us at the heart coordinating everything, that has proper experience at the yard in question.&nbsp;I believe that this bespoke approach will be a great benefit to clients who want to know they have the very best representation and advice, while not paying for services they simply don’t require.Finally, we will be fully transparent about how we earn fees. Clients are very focused on this important matter in an industry where it is often not clear when and where the parties involved are making money. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/55188/image/large-60c2623bb50753210e6124dabd98a9f7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/55188">The yacht market has had a very impressive rebound from the lows of early 2020, what do you see as the movement of the market in the coming months and years?Covid-19 has changed the world forever. Not only do ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNWI) understand the freedom and flexibility that yachting offers in the current environment but Covid-19 has propelled the way that people work by about 25 years. Previously yacht owners were actually a fair bit more senior in years than you might think. The reason being is that younger UHNWIs were stuck in their offices, busy building their businesses.&nbsp;I had a lot of clients who until recently would only consider chartering a yacht as they said they only took a few weeks holiday every year but that they would consider it later in life when less busy. Now every UHNWI has been forced to work remotely and has experienced that it is totally possible. Owning a yacht has now become justifiable for them as they can spend extended times on board both working while enjoying the relaxing and comfortable benefits of being on their own yacht wherever and whenever they choose.&nbsp;I have one client who flies in to join his yacht with his trading terminals - he is able to work while still getting to enjoy watersports at the start and end of the day and spending time with his family. As such, the market has now opened up to an increasing number of potential owners and I only see this trend continuing.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180268/image/large-c56cba5009286bdd01107beef22ea8ea.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180268">Do you have any standout yacht sales in your years of experience?I think every sale, especially when you act for a buyer, is special. It is incredibly enjoyable to work with a buyer setting out on a journey to find or build a yacht that meets their requirements and expectations knowing that they, their family and friends will make so many special memories on board.&nbsp;Significant sales have included the stunning 91m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)John Brown & Sons1930">Nahlin</a> and the construction and subsequent sale of yachts such as the 82m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> Kibo (now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4094" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Grace81.0m (265'9&quot;)Abeking & Rasmussen2014">Grace</a>) and 57m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> Larisa (now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3663" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="W57.6m (188'12&quot;)Feadship2013">W</a>).<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/4763/image/large-d6b11c735fff1e9300269ef834ec76ba.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/4763">If I had to pick one standout one though, it would have to be the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53577" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="50m Heesen superyacht Erica sold (2021-08-24 14:45:00 +0200)">recent sale of the 50m Heesen Erica</a> (now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6107" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Toute Sweet49.8m (163'5&quot;)Heesen Yachts2019">Toute Sweet</a>) which marks one of the first deals that I have done since starting <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6451" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christie Yachts (Company)">Christie Yachts</a>. Not only is she a very recognised and striking design by one of the leading Dutch shipyards, but we found the client a yacht in a market with almost no pedigree yachts available at present. The client was referred to us by someone I greatly admire and respect which was also a great compliment that they trusted us to look after this client. Through industry contacts we managed to track down this very special off-market opportunity and had the deal concluded within weeks of being introduced to the buyer. They are now very happy and satisfied owners. This deal in itself, within two months of establishing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6451" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christie Yachts (Company)">Christie Yachts</a>, made the decision to go it alone feel truly worthwhile.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195283/image/large-722a3a2b1ab345a8f65c3337c1492835.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195283">What is the most important trait that makes a successful yacht broker?100% it is honesty. You have to tell it how it is to clients as they are coming to you for advice in an area where they may not have much experience. They expect you to be the expert adding quantifiable value to the process. It is so important to give honest advice so that clients’ expectations are realistically managed.&nbsp;In the case of a buyer, this would include explaining the limitations of a yacht, its true market value, the ability to resell easily in the future, realistic rather than mythical operational budget and charter income as well as any short to medium term maintenance which may prove costly down the line.&nbsp;For a seller, it would be explaining true market value to set the asking price at the right level both to attract interest and to attain the optimal price. I’ve seen so many yachts come to the market with ridiculous asking prices as the owners have been promised an unrealistic price by the broker in question just to secure the Central Agency. The yacht then ends up on the market for years while the owner endures ongoing running costs and depreciation.As an industry we need to be honest to ensure that clients remain owners for years to come as they have had a good experience through receiving proper guidance.

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="John Brown & Sons (Company)">John Brown &amp; Co.</a> was originally founded by John Brown in 1838 in Sheffield, UK, as a steel-maker. The company was involved in supplying steel components to the rail industry and by 1860 was manufacturing armour-plating for British Royal Navy ships. In 1899 the decision was made to start building complete ships and the company took over <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3577" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clyde & Co (Company)">Clydebank Engineering &amp; Shipbuilding Co.</a> in Scotland. There the team developed the Brown-Curtis turbine, a propulsion system that encouraged the Royal Navy to commission the yard to build many of its major warships.&nbsp;Here, we take a look at the company resume of the nine very large steam yachts constructed between 1902 and 1954:&nbsp;SHEELAH // 73m // 1902 // 466 GT &nbsp;Built for William A. Donaldson of Duntochter, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, this steam yacht (the second of its name), was sold in 1905 to John K. L. Ross of Montreal, Canada. In 1913, she became the property of Admiral David Beatty (later Earl Beatty) of London, who loaned her to the British Admiralty from 1914 to 1923 for use as a hospital ship. Jugoslavenska Lloyd of Dubrovnik acquired the vessel in 1935, converting her to commercial use as the Tiha. Watson & Co. Ltd (Company)">G. L. Watson</a>, Doris was completed for Glasgow-based Solomon B. Joel in 1910 before being requisitioned by the British Admiralty in 1914 for service as an auxiliary patrol vessel. Renamed Eileen when returned to her owner in 1919, she was sold in 1931 to the commercial owner Soc D’Armement des Croisieres Pierre Dupuy of Le Havre, before being converted for passengers and renamed Girundia II. Operated by several owners until 1954 when the Government of Kuwait acquired and renamed her Al Salimi. No longer seagoing by 1973. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195690/image/large-d7dd2290775272c707cc6cd2ad7ca676.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195690">JEANNETTE // 75.6m // 1911 // 931 GTAnother <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="G.L. Watson</a> design, Jeannette was delivered to Harry Livesey of Glasgow in 1911 before being requisitioned by the Admiralty between 1915 and 1919 and renamed Jeannette II. Sold in 1934 and promptly again in 1936, she was acquired by Col. John Gretton in 1939 and renamed St. Modwen. During WWII she served as an anti-submarine vessel before being purchased by commercial interests and converted to a cargo ship. Finally broken up in 1950 at Haifa, Israel.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195693/image/large-79e4dca7de4e76b8cb17aadae23edc2f.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195693">SAPPHIRE // 86.9M // 1912 // 1207 GTDelivered to the Duke of Bedford in 1912, Sapphire was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1915 and used as an auxiliary patrol vessel until 1920 when she was bought by Viscount Furness. Lord Fairhaven acquired her in 1923 and would retain ownership until Admiralty requisition in 1939 when she was renamed HMS Breda. In 1926 the Duke of Sutherland bought the vessel and renamed it Sans Peur, before selling her to King Faisal of Iraq in 1935 under the name King Faisal I prior to being acquired by the Iraqi government for use as a lighthouse tender. Last reported sighting was in 1974. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195695/image/large-88586d637961960d14de18b4b945d1e1.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195695">THALASSA // 60m // 1924 // 876 GT&nbsp;The American heir to a leading carpet manufacturing business set up by his father, Eugene Higgins commissioned this steam yacht in the early 1920s. Acquired by the British government in 1944, she was used as an examination vessel in the Mediterranean. In 1945 the owner became W.G. Hetherington of Glasgow who renamed the yacht Suilven. After his death, Thalassa was sold to the Government of Iran in 1947 and converted for use as a pilot vessel. One of G.L. John Brown and Co. Yachts: A history of the yacht builder

A history of steel-maker turned yacht builder John Brown & Co 

Cast your mind back to the 1930s. The first Zeppelin Airship took flight, the globe geared up for the second great war of the century, and classic ‘Golden Age’ yacht liners such as 59-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/534" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marala58.83m (193'0&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1931">Marala</a> and 91-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)John Brown & Sons1930">Nahlin</a> plied the planet’s seas. Meanwhile, on Ireland’s rugged Atlantic west coast, a joint venture between the local Chamber of Commerce and a family from Northampton lead to the birth of deck shoe and sailing boot specialists, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6315" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dubarry of Ireland (Company)">Dubarry</a>. In a bid to create jobs in Galway’s small town of Ballinasloe, a yachting legacy was born.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195054/image/large-7da74b32382ac9734339fcedae8dc300.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195054">Today, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6315" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dubarry of Ireland (Company)">Dubarry</a> creates clothing that caters to all of a yachties’ needs. Most recently, it launched the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6315" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dubarry of Ireland (Company)">Dubarry</a> Aquatech collection. Dubbed “an exciting and versatile new range of performance footwear, clothing and accessories,” the designers behind the new line say products have been specifically developed for use across a wide variety of nautical environments. The 91-metre steamship <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)John Brown & Sons1930">Nahlin</a> has just celebrated her 91st year afloat and was seen this week taking refuge in Falmouth, Cornwall. Launched on the 28th April 1930, the steamship, previously named&nbsp;Libertatea, was designed by the Scotish firm&nbsp;G. L. Watson &amp; Co and built in Clyde, Scotland, by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="John Brown & Sons (Company)">John Brown &amp; Co</a>. The last time <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/news#managed-by-system" target="_blank">Nahlin</a> was seen in Falmouth, she was mounted aboard a cargo ship en route to the beginnings of her restoration work in 1999. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/4763/image/large-d6b11c735fff1e9300269ef834ec76ba.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/4763">The extraordinary motor yacht was part of a fifteen year campaign to rescue the steamship from dilapidation in Romania, in which her designers <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="G.L. Watson & Co. Ltd (Company)">G. L. Watson &amp; Co</a>, were the major instigator. Nicholas Edmiston and a yachtsman named William Collier discovered the vessel in dire straits, and after 15 years of negotiation, returned the vessel to the United Kingdom in 1999. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/39878/image/large-a5132adc2bc9e7f3c2b82929d9230185.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/39878">Following her return to Scotland, her original designers pooled their historical resources and began to stabilise her condition, using photographs from ex.crew mates family albums to bolster their historical archive. Gradually, over 450 tons of debris was removed and her surviving interiors were surveyed, the team retaining as much originality as they could find, creating plaster moulds of original cornicing and moulding.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/4764/image/large-b4398a07be4addbfe8891ff074a501ca.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/4764">German shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> undertook the body of the restorative work during a monumental rebuild between 2005 and 2010, while <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="G.L. Watson & Co. Ltd (Company)">G. L. Watson &amp; Co</a> oversaw and project managed the rebuild. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blohm & Voss GmbH (Company)">Blohm &amp; Voss Repair GmbH</a> in Hamburg were charged with her engineering.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/39880/image/large-314bc9c31939af441151da7852bc19d0.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/39880">In 2010, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)John Brown & Sons1930">Nahlin</a> returned to the British Isles in full, turnkey beauty. The work on the steamship set a new standard for classic superyacht restoration work. She has a top speed of 18 knots.&nbsp;

It has to be said, sometimes older is better and there are many in the industry who would say that sailing on a vintage yacht gives an unbeatable feeling which cannot be matched by today's high-tech vessels. It is no secret that Nick Edmiston is a fan of classic yachts. He has played a central role in the sale and refit of several notable vintage motor yachts over the past 20 years, including&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2248" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue Bird31.59m (103'8&quot;)">Blue Bird</a>&nbsp;(1938), <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)">Nahlin</a>&nbsp;(1930),<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">&nbsp;Malahne</a> (1937), and now 71-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida 1929</a>. Built by Krupp Germaniawerft for the millionaire yeast magnate Max Fleischmann, the yacht has sailed under a number of high-profile owners since her launch nearly 90 years ago. Earlier this year, she was delivered to her latest owner following an extensive 18-month restoration at the Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, UK. SuperYacht Times talked with Nick Edmiston and broker Alex Busher, who acted as liaison between Edmiston and the new owner, about the challenges associated with restoring and managing classic yachts. We began by asking how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida</a> came to change hands in 2016.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41790/image/large-3fd05144629a31880d61507719312e72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41790">Nick: I’d known the yacht for years, ever since she was called <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Sarina</a> and owned by Loel Guinness, who spared no expense to make sure she remained in excellent shape. The last owner had been hanging onto her with the thought of taking a long cruise, but that never happened. After several years when she was effectively mothballed, he decided to sell her and we brokered the deal with the new owner. Like all restorations, the worklist grew as the project progressed, but he was determined to bring her back into top condition with a view to chartering and taking her around the world.&nbsp;Alex: The restoration was really needed. She’d undergone a previous refit in Turkey in 2000, which hadn’t addressed some of the major issues. After a survey of the hull, we very quickly realised the underwater profile would have to be stripped down to the frames for the first time in almost 90 years. The fact she was still intact is a testament to Germany’s shipbuilding prowess, but we ended up replacing the tanks and 60 percent of the hull, using over 100 tons of marine-grade steel in the process. At one point there were 70 welders working on her: when the old funnel was removed and engine room gutted, you could look down through the decks and see the bottom of the dry dock.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41793/image/large-8c32b0bf15e6a5c652a2cda1ff3183d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41793">Why the decision to go to Pendennis for the refit?Alex: Several reasons. Besides having a slot available, Pendennis has experience of refitting other classic motor yachts, including<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">&nbsp;Malahne</a> and<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/254" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fair Lady42.0m (137'10&quot;)">&nbsp;Fair Lady</a>. They had also completed a short refit of the yacht in 2011 when she was called <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Dona Amélia</a>, so had a lot of prior knowledge. Brexit had just kicked off and sterling had taken a hit, so the exchange rate was a consideration. Another factor was that the yard is very discreet and a bit off-radar down in Falmouth, which suited the owner who wished to maintain his privacy.&nbsp;Considering the high cost of restoration and maintenance, what kind of owner decides to invest in a classic yacht?Nick: &nbsp;Someone who knows how to appreciate tradition and elegance; someone who leads a very stylish lifestyle and has a passion for maintaining an asset of historical significance. That’s not everyone by any means. And once they’ve spent the money, they’re not going to recover it immediately, if at all. In the long-term, the paint job might be a bit cheaper as you don’t have a high-gloss metallic finish, but they require constant attention and tend to have big crews, so that’s an added cost. There’s definitely more work involved and you have to have a loyal crew prepared to roll up their sleeves and get the job done. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/41792/image/large-8bca09e70d639b0d3767e1d759409cde.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41792">Alex: With classic yachts, it’s all about their history: the stories behind the owners and the places they’ve been to. We tend to think of explorers as a new trend, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida</a> was originally built for Fleischmann with an 8,000-mile range for exploring the Pacific and was named after the native Haida people of Alaska and British Columbia. The current owner had been following her for the last 15 years or so, and it was either this yacht or none at all. He wanted character and soul, not a replica or a new build. It’s a bit like living in a stately home rather than a brand new hotel, which is why he wanted to keep the original Krupp engines, the beating heart of the vessel and the oldest working diesels on any yacht today. They have no gearbox, so to reverse they have to be stopped and restarted using the old telegraphs still linking the bridge to the engine room. Stripping and rebuilding them with custom-made parts was a huge job in itself.&nbsp;How did you decide on Adam Lay for the new interior design?Alex: The owner had very clear ideas of what he wanted and had spent a lot of time researching online and in magazines. He put together four large mood books of his own and toured antique fairs all over Europe for period accessories, which is still ongoing. But we needed someone to fine-tune his ideas and bring it all together to produce a traditional décor with a nod to contemporary lifestyles. Adam had been involved in the refit of the J-Class&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour</a>&nbsp;and is a very good listener. The owner liked his low-key style and attention to detail, but what swung it was when Adam started sketching in front of him. He was very impressed with his draughtsmanship skills.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41791/image/large-35a900be03ce0739b16f2783f969fabb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41791">What concessions were made to modernity during the refit?Alex: Although the owner wanted a sympathetic restoration, he was aware of modern charter requirements. So a hot tub was added on the top deck and a hammam spa on the lower deck, the galley was upgraded, new AC installed, along with new custom tenders [restored to their original position amidships] and new cranes for launching them. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida 1929&nbsp;</a>is the only classic motor yacht of her size available for charter with accommodation for 12 guests and a private owner’s deck. The other classics like<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)">&nbsp;Nahlin,</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Talitha82.6m (270'12&quot;)">Talitha G</a>&nbsp;and<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shemara64.68m (212'2&quot;)">&nbsp;Shemara</a> are all private.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">&nbsp;Malahne&nbsp;</a>is available for charter, but she’s a lot smaller.&nbsp;What other classic yachts are out there waiting to be saved?Nick:&nbsp;There are a couple left worth getting hold of, but I’m not going to tell you which they are in case someone else gets to them first! There was a sister ship to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shemara64.68m (212'2&quot;)">Shemara</a> that went to Japan, and another lovely old motor yacht that once belonged to the Courtauld textile family that went to Sierra Leone as a presidential yacht. Sadly the former was broken up and the latter sank before my people could get to them. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)">Nahlin</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">Malahne</a> probably wouldn’t be around today if I hadn’t stepped in. The challenge is finding the right owner in time and then a yard with the wherewithal to restore them, which is not cheap by any means. Ultimately, you have to have a passion for it.

Haida 1929: talking classic yachts with Edmiston

The past weekend saw one of the busiest periods of superyacht operations for the Mediterranean gateway port of Gibraltar, as a total of 20 superyachts were recorded making use of the port’s facilities. An impressive number of 19 superyachts were at one stage either alongside the new deep water Mid Harbours Marina, private marinas, or in the anchorage outside the port simultaneously.

It is nothing new for these superyachts to pull over for a pit stop in Gibraltar, but according to Port CEO and Captain, Bob Sanguinetti, “the new berths at Mid Harbours Marina, improved superstructure, competitively priced fuel, and a concerted marketing effort,” all contributed to the recent increase in activity in the port. The peak in activity is of course a direct result of the annual migration of superyachts heading south across the Atlantic where a busy winter cruising season awaits.

Superyacht Nahlin in Livadhi, Greece

Nahlin is one of the most famous yachts in British royal history with her origin dating back to the year 1930 when she was launched by the John Brown &amp; Company shipyard in England. She was built for Lady Annie Henrietta Yule, one of the richest women in Britain at the time. Nahlin was purchased in 1937 by King Carol II of Romania, and renamed Luceafarul, and later renamed once more to Liberty. When the Romanian monarch abdicated in 1940, she became the property of the Romanian Ministry of Culture, and was turned into a museum - and then a floating restaurant set on the river Danube. The yacht was purchased from the Romanian government after nearly 60 years in 1999 and sent to Britain for a long-awaited restoration project. Nahlin was finally restored to her former regal self and recommissioned in 2010. The refit was undertaken by Nobiskrug at Rendsburg, Germany, and completion was at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, where diesel-electric engines replaced her old steam turbines.

Today she is owned by a British Industrial entrepreneur. She accommodates up to 14 guests on board, 47 crew and has a maximum speed of 18 knots with a cruising speed of 14 knots.

The 91m classic superyacht Nahlin in Livadhi

The 50 metre classic motor yacht Malahne was launched recently after an extensive 30 month refit at the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, UK. Originally launched in 1937, the almost 80 year old vessel was designed by Charles E. Nicholson and built by Camper &amp; Nicholsons. Amongst her extensive modifications were a drastic restoration of her interior and exterior to a sophisticated and contemporary standard, whilst also being modernised to be fully classed by Lloyd’s Register and compliant with the MCA Large Yacht Code (LY3).<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152909/image/large-41608b9d4bf2405a47b56013897f23cc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152909">The impressive project was brought to life by Nicholas Edmiston, Chairman of Edmiston &amp; Company who has also played a vital part in the restoration of Nahlin and Bluebird. After introducing the project to her owner, she was taken to the Pendennis facilities where classic yacht experts G.L. Watson &amp; Co. provided the exterior and interior design for the crew accommodation. William Collier, Managing Director at G.L. Watson &amp; Co, comments, “The Malahne project is the most ambitious motor yacht restoration yet undertaken. The challenge of recreating many of the yacht’s features while achieving a faithful restoration of the hull shape has been very rewarding. Together we have brought an historically important yacht back to life. Malahne appears as she did in the 1930s, while having all of today’s conveniences.”On-site project management was provided by G. L. Watson and Edmiston Yacht Management (EYM), who pooled their complementary design and technical expertise to work closely with Pendennis.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152910/image/large-ba878a638a444a6c6d26955a72238d8b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152910">Inside, she features Art Deco influenced interior design created by Oliver Laws. Guy Oliver of Oliver Laws explains his brief from the owner, saying; “The Owner’s brief to “make Malahne look as if she had been in continuous ownership since she was built” was wonderful and daunting. The new Malahne had to function with contemporary requirements for air conditioning and technology, all of which had to be contained in an original envelope. I spent a long time establishing a language and grammar for the interior, with bespoke detailing, woods and materials appropriate to the period, (which were all hand worked and finished), as well as designing and sourcing original furniture in a lightly eclectic way to give an air of authenticity and continuity. The result is a vessel of charm and elegance that makes a distinctive statement for which I am sure she will become renowned.”Mike Carr, Managing Director of Pendennis, is extremely proud of the standard of workmanship on-board: “Over the past two and half years the team here has worked incredibly hard to bring Malahne back to life. Seeing the final transformation from her 1980s form back to her original design, her launch marks a proud moment for everyone involved. Our tradespeople from all areas have applied quality, care, pride and passion to every aspect of the project. There have been unprecedented opportunities to showcase their restoration skills, whilst sympathetically integrating modern systems. Malahne now commands a special place in the Pendennis fleet.”On completion of trials, Malahne will return to the Mediterranean. Classic 50m superyacht Malahne launches after 30 month restoration

Blohm+Voss has built some of the most iconic yachts in the world. In the 90s the yard made waves with vessels such as Lady Moura and ECO, and more recently with A, Eclipse and Palladium. The yard introduced a new model at the Monaco Yacht Show this year, the 80 metre BV80. In Qatar I sat down with their Managing Director, Dr. Herbert Aly.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151640/image/large-6599558f0e7000fa874e8dec0e45d7b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151640">Dr. Aly started with discussing an exciting project, the BV80. Speculating on whether or not the vessel was even going to be built in the future, Dr. Aly stated, “It is already sold, directly from the show in Monaco. A day after the show it was already sold. We expect the first steel cutting in July.”The BV80 project was already developed by Eidsgaard with Blohm &amp; Voss before the client came along, and Dr. Aly told us that the development of the project was started in January of this year.Talking about their collaboration on the superyacht, Dr. Aly states, “We liked their attitude. This is a very modern design, a bright design, and is new for us, and maybe new for the market. We had some very intense feedback from the market before starting the actual design work from some workshops in London with brokers, clients and captains. We were asking them what they would like to see on a vessel this size, and this is the outcome. We chose Eidsgaard and he has interpreted it very well.”The outcome is clearly well received by the industry and the shipyard’s clients, with Dr. Aly reporting over 40 interested clients to date.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151641/image/large-20cb4d6fdbc4b1689bb007dc738a5db0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151024">Though the BV80 project is semi-custom, Blohm + Voss are still ready to build custom projects and insist that one would not exist without another. Dr. Aly comments, “In our yard in Hamburg we have a huge capacity. This huge capacity needs to be fed, and they would never be fed by semi-custom vessels only.”So, with the business being fully satisfied by both sides of the building process, the Managing Director regards the mix as a more balanced business plan and, therefore, a better utilisation of all forces available.In regards to refit and repair services, Dr. Aly continues, saying, “It is of increasing importance to us. We have an excellent track record and for the time, we currently have two yachts in the yard and we’re hoping to see more.” In the future, refits at the German shipyard may include a 163 metre superyacht to add to the companies ever growing refit portfolio, which includes Octopus and, currently, Nahlin.Amidst rumours that have been circulating for a long time regarding a particularly large boatover 200 metres, Dr. Aly comments, “We would bid on it if it comes up and if it turns out to be real. We’ve seen 163 and 180 metres, but the majority of the really big yachts are around 130 to 140 metres, which is more seasonable size.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151642/image/large-07c127b3d8e98d2433437c478fe16e3f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151026">To conclude, SuperYacht Times asked Dr. Aly about the importance of the region of the show to Blohm + Voss, and identified the Gulf Region as one of the shipyards most important markets.He concludes, “You have to be here, simply. It will show whether we can find a potential client. The region itself is one out of three which are the most important of all for us, including Russia, the Gulf Region and the US. Once launched, Nahlin was distinguished as one of the largest private yachts ever to be built in the country.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151201/image/large-c304e7fd168cd20de06ac31f68af9967.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150988">In 1936 she was at the heart of a defamatory royal scandal. King Edward VIII chartered the yacht to be used for an eastern European cruise by himself and Mrs. Wallis Simpson; an American divorced socialite who was still married at the time. Not only was the newly appointed British king seemingly portraying Nazi sympathies - and with a married woman - he drank, smoked and partied his way around Europe, leaving his reputation as king in ruins. Shortly after his return from this cruise on board Nahlin, the King abdicated, and married Mrs. Simpson.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151202/image/large-196684cd022c79fe649866041174462e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/143555">She was then purchased in 1937 by King Carol II of Romania, and renamed Luceafarul, and later renamed once more to Liberty. When the Romanian monarch abdicated in 1940, she became the property of the Romanian Ministry of Culture, and was turned into a museum - and then a floating restaurant - on the river Danube.<iframe algin="center" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/arnekiel/5437394864/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe>It was here that she rested for almost 60 years, until she was purchased from the Romanian government and, in 1999, sent to Britain for a long awaited restoration project. Nahlin was finally restored to her former regal self and recommissioned in 2010. The refit was undertaken by Nobiskrug at Rendsburg, Germany, and completion was at the Blohm + Voss shipyard, Hamburg, where diesel-electric engines replaced her old steam turbines.Today, she is owned by a British Industrial entrepreneur. She accommodates up to 14 guests on board, 47 crew and has a maximum speed of 18 knots with a cruising speed of 14 knots.By Gemma Fottles

Historic Superyachts: Nahlin from 1930

The 91.44 metre superyacht Nahlin was photographed by SYT contributor Giovanni Romero, as she arrived in Gibraltar last month. The yacht is one of the largest classic yachts in the world, built by John Brown &amp; Sons in 1930 to a design of G.L. Watson. Her current owners took her to Germany in 2010 to be completly rebuilt and restored. Nowadays, Nahlin features a modern diesel-electric propulsion system, and an interior by the French designer Remi Tessier. “Unlike Europe, marinas in Asia are more about safe berthing for your vessel as opposed to a destination in its own right”, reports Captain Nick Coombes, head of Asia Pacific Superyachts Malaysia based on Langkawi Island.“Very few marinas are located in popular tourist areas in Asia Pacific regions - thus the idea of sitting on your yacht and watching the world watch you, is not an option. As a result most Superyacht visitors and charters here never see a marina, but instead spend their entire journey cruising from beautiful anchorage to beautiful anchorage”, says Captain Nick; “It is a lot more about exploring the natural splendor of South East Asia, than cruising from town to town.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/147318/image/large-f59e993582b2eb0d176eb37dc9e99287.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/147318"> If you are interested in marinas in Asia Pacific - there are more options now, reflecting the rising affluence of Asia. “There are now world-class marinas and accommodation in nearly every sailing region”, notes Captain Nick: “There’s Phuket, providing hundreds of berths for everything from Superyachts to small cruisers. To the south Malaysia’s Langkawi Island is a popular winter destination as are the chain of facilities that run down the Malacca Straits to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and heading east into the vast Gulf of Thailand. And, coming on board with APS in 2013, is New Zealand, which can boast of excellent marinas and anchorage options in the Pacific region".There’s no doubt Superyachts are being challenged in finding places to stay as the world's fleet of Superyachts has ballooned in the past five years by 25 percent, to around 4,600, according to Marina Projects, a U.K. consultancy firm as excerpted from an article by Jason Chow in the Wall Street Journal Asia: “Owners of the world’s Superyachts are running into a new problem as they set sail across the crowded seas: finding a place to park. In the Mediterranean, which is where most of the yachts are located, there are an estimated 3,000 superyacht berths. Shortages in some countries mean opportunity for other aspiring yachting centers. But will boat owners want to broaden their horizons?”For those interested, Asia Pacific Superyachts New Zealand director Jeanette Tobin talks about specific places where Superyachts go and the berths she puts their boats onto in Auckland when they visit New Zealand. Tobin reports, “Two marinas for Superyachts, Viaduct Harbour Marina and Silo Superyacht Marina, are located in downtown Auckland and have full power and water. Vessels can clear customs and biosecurity in/out from both marinas and there’s easy access to all local contractors, chandleries, supermarkets and Auckland’s leading restaurants and bars.” “Viaduct Harbour Marina in downtown Auckland was built for the 2000 Americas Cup and is surrounded by leading bars &amp; restaurants. Viaduct provides: 1 x 60m side-to berth; 4 x 50m berths; 4 x 40m berths; 8 x 30m berths; and full power &amp; water facilities + Wi-Fi”, Tobin adds.500m west of the Viaduct Marina in the newly developed Beaumont Quarter is the Silo Superyacht Marina, a new facility built to cope with the growing demand from larger vessels and an area where new bars and restaurants have opened. Viaduct and Silo Marinas are near Auckland’s central business district where visitors can enjoy the entertainment planned throughout the summer which includes outdoor movie theatres, wine and food festivals, seafood festivals, music concerts plus much more… offering crew a real taste of New Zealand.Silo Marina announced it has increased its capacity to accommodate vessels. Jeanette notes Silo currently has M/Y’s “A”, Nahlin and Pacific enjoying the facilities. Construction has seen a new 90m dock added with a 1m freeboard, making it the biggest pontoon in New Zealand. Adjacent to the new pontoon, dredging has been carried out to provide ease of access to the dock and to open up access to a 64m berth adjacent to the new premises of Rig Pro which is an exciting feature of the new development - the improved ability to carry out mast stepping.In addition to the development on the southern end of the marina, a new extension is about to be added to the existing docks on the northern end to create two new 65m (213ft) berths. With the new developments, Silo Marina will move from 535 linear metres to 874 linear metres of available space, doubling capacity and creating 10 berths in total to make boat movements easier.Jeanette explains there’s a third option nearby, the Nelson Marina: “Port Nelson at the top of the South Island has a Superyacht berth for larger vessels. The Port has a 40m pontoon for Superyachts visiting the Port – and is in excellent, safe facilities and offers the attractions of the Nelson region. Asia Pacific’s growing marinas

One of our readers send in this photo of some very large yachts, currently in Auckland New Zealand, where work is being done on them. In this picture, from right to left, we see the 119 metre Starck designed superyacht A, docked next the to classic 91 metre superyacht Nahlin. Next to Nahlin you can just make out Belle Aimee, a 52 metre superyacht by Amels. The 82.6 metre Talitha (right) was built by the Krupp Germania Werft in 1930, and was completely refitted in Germany. The 1930's restored 91.4 metre superyacht Nahlin

The 91.44 metre superyacht is currently undergoing sea trials in the Ostsee following a complete rebuild during the last 4 years. Nahlin was originally built by John Brown &amp; Sons in 1930 to a design of G.L. Watson.
