The 76.4-metre research vessel, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8372" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Petrel76.45m (250'10&quot;)Brattvaag Skipsverft AS2003">Petrel</a>, formerly owned by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has fallen on a 45-degree angle on her starboard side in a dry dock in Leith, Edinburgh. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262728/image/large-32f62e2fc0de714fc149566c8f6785ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262728">In the early morning on 22 March, emergency services were called to help assist with the casualty. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but it is believed that strong winds played a significant role. The coastguard sent teams to the scene and the public has been asked to avoid the area of Imperial Dock. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262729/image/large-2b5c5c009a48ea0f2296f688c99d05cf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262729">The unexpected accident resulted in many people being injured, with 15 of them being taken to the hospital. Cryptocurrencies have become even more present in the yachting world, with a number of leading brokerage houses accepting these types of payments to buy and charter yachts. While the uptake has been gradual, the recent surge highlights that this hesitancy hasn’t come from resistance. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208212/image/large-391ca1c70a6822b2c89fe2ca519bf6b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208212">Even amidst the great crypto crash, many brokerage firms are adding these payment types to their portfolios – this trend highlights an expectation that crypto will bounce back. The most recent being the Monaco-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1317" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachtzoo (Company)">Yachtzoo</a>, which, like many others, has partnered up with the global bitcoin service provider BitPay. BitPay enables instantaneous borderless payments with many leading cryptocoins. Stuart Larsen of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser Yachts</a> has had a record year by anyones standards, with some of the most expensive superyacht sales having his name sealing the deal. SYT's Francesca Webster caught up with Stuart to find out a little more about his predictions for 2022, his life as a yacht broker and his recipe for success:<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/26197/image/large-890662e701b71dfbed4d49faaa502da9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26197">How did you enter the world of yacht brokerage, can you give a bit of an overview of your career?I fell into yachting by chance, like most of my peers. After graduating from law school in New Zealand, I took a year off to travel. I had a scholarship to Harvard University but I wanted to see a bit more of the world before getting serious about what I thought would be a legal career. &nbsp;The era of cheap travel hadn’t arrived yet and Kiwis didn’t travel as much as they can now but, regardless, off I went.&nbsp;After spending a brutally cold Christmas in New York, I travelled to Florida in search of the sun, something more like Christmas at home. Funds were running low and having done a lot of competitive sailing in New Zealand, I easily got work and accommodation on a boat in Fort Lauderdale.&nbsp;Of course, with my Kiwi accent I met many people in the yachting business and made friends with a well-established yacht broker who had just started his own company. He decided he wanted to take me under his wing and offered me a sales position in his company. I didn’t know anything about brokerage, let alone that it could be a viable business, but I wanted to find out more. It certainly seemed more exciting than more law books. It was – and I &nbsp;have never looked back.&nbsp;I joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser Yachts</a> in 1980 and have been with the company for my entire career, through five different ownerships. My parents, of course, were horrified. I do not think my father forgave me until I sold the new build project for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/270" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Octopus126.2m (414'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Octopus</a> almost twenty years later! He still wanted me to be a lawyer………….. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/215527/image/large-0927286eec2249886af64968b4b5974a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/215527">How do you see the industry has changed during your years as a broker?&nbsp;Apart from the obvious - the size, length and number of yachts and cruising grounds have increased significantly – the more interesting changes are less evident. &nbsp;&nbsp;It was the early days of the internet and I was lucky to count among my many clients a number of first-generation IT and tech entrepreneurs whose innovations literally changed the way we live. They were curious, creative, technically minded and fascinated by the natural world. Communications and IT meant that they were no longer tied to their desks. Now it was possible to travel and explore while still keeping tabs on business. The yachts they bought and built reflected their spirit of innovation and technical boldness. For example, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/270" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Octopus126.2m (414'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Octopus</a> with her integrated dock, dual helicopter landing pads and submarine, the tender capability of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/338" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatoosh92.42m (303'3&quot;)Nobiskrug2000">Tatoosh</a> – <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/256" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Senses59.22m (194'3&quot;)Fr. Schweers Shipyard1999">Senses</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/442" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Skat70.7m (231'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2002">Skat</a> and many others, all come to mind. At the time, barring ships for warfare and rockets for space, yachts were the most sophisticated and complex craft man could devise. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/215531/image/large-c4d473658ac1e2844c453ef83f6a3e32.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/215531">The industry as a whole is just catching up now: helicopters, large tenders, spas and beach clubs, even submarines on the larger yachts, are more commonplace. But there is a key difference. The design used to be driven by the function, today most yachts are designer yachts, where design for design’s sake overshadows the functionality. There are a few recent, glorious exceptions - <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Artefact80.0m (262'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2020">Artefact</a> springs to mind, a rare combination of a visionary project, managed by a talented captain supported by a creative, design team and a yard willing and able to innovate technically.The past twenty years has also seen the rise of production and semi-production yachts. They are more standardised since they need to appeal to a larger market segment. They take less time to build and the yard can manage the projects more efficiently – there are fewer problems to solve, less issues to go wrong. While the demand for custom yachts continues, only a handful of yards have the know-how or interest to build anything custom, bigger than 80 metres. But now we see the market maturing with yards focused on guiding demand and creating, rather than following, trends. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/173627/image/large-018cb96ce03b28e43b1a8697913c42a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/173627">What are the biggest challenges brokers face in such a competitive market?I don’t think the key challenges have changed over the years. Numbers have increased so there is more inventory to get to grips with. New yards have sprung up globally so it’s more difficult to track every new project. The internet has helped manage the overload and tools like the MLS systems have become invaluable but they are no substitutes for hard earned knowledge and experience. There are too many brokers who think it’s an easy and glamorous business. Everyone is ready to talk the talk but much fewer are willing to walk the walk. There are only a handful of companies that can offer clients proper advice, service and guidance and I am astounded at the lack of knowledge some brokers have when dealing with yachts over $20 million. I sometimes ask myself if I was a buyer or a seller, would I entrust my $20 million business to that person………….But, essentially the role of a broker hasn’t changed over the years. The challenge is doing it right. We all talk about so-so having sold this or that yacht. A broker doesn’t sell a yacht; his (or her) job is to make the sale happen. This is achieved by smoothing out all the snags, hitches (and ruffled feathers and egos) that are part and parcel of every sale. Personalities are large, the stakes are larger and all parties want to be the winner. The aim is to enable the parties to reach an agreement that all can live with. This means having a clear idea of the outcome you need to reach and managing each step of the process. It is time consuming, requires a lot of thought, idea tossing, fine tuning and creativity. It’s a long-haul journey. Interestingly, while we have a lot more tools, they don’t necessarily make the job of a dealmaker easier. Like building a yacht - you can’t compress the process, it requires time, attention, a good blueprint, a shared road map and a thorough understanding of the yacht sale process in order to arrive at a closing.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/215522/image/large-8b93366fd5d85023fbd1e28cea4ec261.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/215522">You have had an exceptional year, with some major sales. What do you think are the secrets to success in the big boat market?I am still surprised when I look at the numbers. I sold 14 yachts in 2021 which translates into more than three quarters of a billion dollars and over 800 metres (2,624’) in length. In terms of gross tonnage, the total volume of yachts I have sold is equivalent to the gross tonnage of forty-five 50 metre yachts!&nbsp;More importantly, I have acted for young, first-time buyers as well as for clients I first dealt with 30 years ago. It has also been a great privilege to be asked to represent yachts Iike <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/442" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Skat70.7m (231'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2002">Skat</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/270" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Octopus126.2m (414'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Octopus</a> which I originally sold as new build projects, in addition to the other 12 sales this year. &nbsp;The secret? Well, experience and business acumen are essential. Working with a well-respected company with an international presence is also important since our clientele is global. Marketing plays an increasingly central role, all the more so during the pandemic when buyers were not always able to visit a yacht in person. &nbsp;Really it still all boils down to knowing your business, saying it how it is and building up trust. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/215530/image/large-87a34bb0175c7f575bcce07f3b7a2d5d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/215530">What do you think 2022 holds for the yachting industry?The 2021 boom was unexpected. I think most companies were bracing for a downturn, even as bad as the GFC. The onset of the pandemic was so fast there was no time to think things through and certainly no historical map to guide us.&nbsp;Then, all of a sudden business picked up rather than falling off a cliff like we anticipated. It was an eye opener until we realised that yachting provided an escape from the constraints of social distancing and lockdowns. Coupled with a booming stock market and the availability of cheap money, the yachting market simply exploded. However, the sheer size of the surge in demand was astonishing, both in brokerage and new construction. I don’t think 2022 can be such an extraordinary year.&nbsp;Good brokerage inventory is short, shipyards are full and, in many cases, over-extended. Some are not even contemplating discussions, let alone commitments with clients for new builds until their backlogs subside. A repeat of 2021 in sales is not feasible but, overall, the yachting market will remain upbeat as the inventory works its way through the various stages of ownership. &nbsp;Interest in yachting will almost certainly remain high since the impact of the pandemic is going to be with us for a long time. Barring, of course, an increase in the cost of money or a significant slow-down of economic recovery impacting asset markets, yacht sales and prices should hold steady or firm up some more.&nbsp;To date, the surge in numbers and asking prices should provide a springboard for new investment in greener, more sustainable solutions. Younger owners are more attuned to environmental issues and likely more willing to pay a premium for effective solutions, but green has a long way to go to become mainstream.&nbsp;On the downside, there has been a lot of over-promising from many builders. We need to be ready for some disappointing and late deliveries from some yards, driven by not only Covid slowdowns but ongoing supply chain issues and some shipyards’ inabilities to scale-up fast enough and reorganise workforces to the new levels that are now needed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/30084/image/large-e016b312a20bbe2e5945ea5a8e60c192.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/30084">

The 10 most expensive superyachts sold in 2021

With a booming market, 2021 saw many sales of new and used yachts alike. Here, we round up the most expensive superyachts sold in 2021.

In an era defined by lockdowns and social distancing, sales reports ran amok across the board. Traditional sale trajectories for most sectors have been thrown off course – but not so much for the yachting industry. Champagne has been flowing across the whole sector as the combined new and used yacht sales are on course to exceed the 1,100 mark, according to SuperYacht Times’ in-house intelligence system, <a href="https://superyachttimes.ac-page.com/homepage" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/191444/image/large-7bcd74f2c377e7db1304a1e547c47eac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/191444">To date, 1,072 used and new yachts in the 24-metres and above category have been sold. As we still have a few weeks left of the year, it’s highly likely the scales will be tipped to exceed the 1,100 mark. 334 yachts in the 24-metres and above category were sold new, while the remaining 738 yachts were sold used.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/109216/image/large-6852f0e552d06fb05d1c01fbd8d86af0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/109216">The big driver of sales was the 24-30-metre category, with 420 yachts of this size sold this year. Interestingly, a lot of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54061" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Market: Who is driving the post-pandemic boom? (2021-11-22 15:00:00 +0100)">sales have been concentrated in the States</a>. While some of the most notable sales of the year were the 126.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/270" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Octopus126.2m (414'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Octopus</a>, the 104.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blohm & Voss GmbH (Company)">Blohm &amp; Voss</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Moura104.85m (343'12&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH1990">Lady Moura</a> and the 72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN Spa (Company)">CRN</a> superyacht Azteca, now renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/337" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arbema72.0m (236'3&quot;)CRN Spa2010">Arbema</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192623/image/large-899cf5b24fdaf721f286e62afdf9b4da.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192623">There are a few reasons behind this trend, Merijn de Waard, Founder &amp; Director of SuperYacht Times explains. “First, because of the pandemic – people waited to buy yachts. Second, we are seeing that clients who would normally charter yachts are making the jump to ownership. We spoke to some clients, who want to treat their hard work by buying a new yacht to travel the world. They want some more fun instead of only focussing on work. Finally, there has been a wave of people entering the market saying, ‘now is a great time to buy a boat’.”<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9lSGefi6z7w?&amp;wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> Brokers have confirmed this too, with some reporting up to 20 percent of sales coming from buyers looking to purchase their first time. This influx of new people into the industry has also potentially <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54008" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht brokerage & bitcoin: Is the trend here to stay? (2021-11-03 16:45:00 +0100)">spurred a change of buying habits</a>.&nbsp;“A lot of new money has been made during the pandemic, especially in the tech sector,” de Waard said. “This has led to a lot of younger people looking to enjoy their hard-earned cash in new ways. It’s usual for first-time buyers to look at smaller yachts, over time they often look to upgrade and go bigger. But there has also been a growing interest in larger yachts for these new owners. This is really great for our market because these new owners will probably buy a lot more yachts throughout their lifetimes and get their friends and business partners involved as well.”<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aoUxGbhjO4o?&amp;wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> Over the past few years yacht sales have been on a pretty steady trajectory. In 2018, 788 yachts in the above 24-metre category were sold. The sales figures for 2019 was about the same, with 771 in the same category sold. There was then an uptick in 2020, with sales reaching the 821 mark. This year though, sales have boomed and vastly exceeded expectations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/212452/image/large-729a1f17a54798e861ad1ed45a829553.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/212452"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54008" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht brokerage & bitcoin: Is the trend here to stay? (2021-11-03 16:45:00 +0100)">Is the sales boom sustainable?</a> – is the question at the back of a lot of our minds. “Well, I’m not too sure yet,” de Waard previously responded. “I’m very optimistic and I definitely think yachts will keep selling, but there needs to be the product as well; there needs to be yachts for sale. And if we look at the number of new yachts coming on the market, it is less than the same time last year."

In a time when space, privacy and those closest to us are more important than ever before, we are seeing an eruption of yacht designs that answer the question of how to make the very most of life with the people we love. Part of the mentality change over the past two years has led to an increase in the number of long-range superyachts, unanimously (and often crudely) referred to as explorers. While there have been exceptional examples of explorer yachts out there in the fleet for decades, one need look no further than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/270" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Octopus126.2m (414'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Octopus</a>, the proliferation of concepts out there in the ether beg the question of what is the true draw of explorer yachts, and how do they fit into the broader superyacht industry?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209715/image/large-c6164cdba295aa383003113722fcf9c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209715"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209760/image/large-3851e5f91502ee0e5061c52d1cf914df.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209760">One company that has been working hard to answer that question is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a>. While the 5,000-6,000 nautical mile range at 10-12 knots is impressive when looked at independently, combine that with the fact that all SeaXplorer superyachts feature hybrid propulsion and the package is eye watering. Explorer yachts tend to have longer ranges to sustain autonomous travel to the earth’s most remote corners. An additional benefit of an explorer yacht is that they tend to have a range of toys on board, such as submarines, helicopters and more. As the design, naval architecture and much of the preparation of these models are already complete, the build process is automatically expedited. As an example, I am currently involved in a project where the choice of the builder is largely determined by its commitment to deliver in a relatively short time. The ability of a builder to invest in semi-custom, “speculative” yacht projects (as seen routinely in Italy and Holland for example) can be a highly desirable asset.”3. What range would you like your superyacht to have?The emergence and lasting presence of the Covid-19 pandemic has forced owner’s and prospective owner’s to reconsider the destinations that they cruise to. In an attempt to avoid crowds and escape the pandemic, while also attempting to discover some of the less travelled parts of our world, there has been a strengthened focus on a yacht’s range.Mini-explorers, such as the 23.95-metre semi-custom explorer yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11087" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Veronika 23.95m (78'7&quot;)Bering Yachts2021">Veronika</a>, constructed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bering Yachts (Company)">Bering Yachts</a>, offer owners the double advantage of explorer capabilities while allowing them to continue to navigate into smaller ports and marinas, such as those found on the Mediterranean. A shorter range is appropriate for inner Mediterranean cruising, as ports are often close to one another. Therefore, given the current state of travel restrictions it is important to consider the location of the shipyard to ensure that you can be as involved in the realisation of your dream project as possible.Green considerations: As the industry continues to grow a greater consciousness of sustainability, owner’s considering building a yacht with a reduced environmental impact should be mindful of choosing a shipyard who lines up with these goals. From a young age, Dr Sylvia Earle has had a zeal for science that would inevitably lead her to the ocean. Driven by a fascination for the vast ecosystems that both enable and sustain our earthly existence, Earle has directed her efforts towards the protection of our oceans through Mission Blue. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/110498/image/large-e1c87ec311740823bd43cb5022941541.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/110498">Over the years, as a scientist, oceanographer and explorer, Dr Sylvia Earle has witnessed a critical transformation in society’s attitude towards and aptitude for helping the oceans. On the one hand, the vast accumulation and dissemination of knowledge has bridged a stronger connection between the world and its natural heritage, making humanity more aware of the important ecosystems that power life on earth. Yet, in the same breath, technological advancements have enabled humans to fish and extract materials on an unsustainable scale. Armed with technologies that have unparalleled extractive capabilities and which have allowed us to clear cut the majority of the ocean, this 90% drop in sea life has far-reaching consequences.&nbsp;With this in mind, SuperYacht Times spoke to Dr Sylvia Earle, who has partnered up with the British leisure marine company, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>, to find out how superyacht owners can come together and help conserve our depleting marine wildlife. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/101881/image/large-52edbd4a948775cedf796f9bb404d63b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101881">Talk me through the reasons behind beginning the partnership between Mission Blue and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>.Mission Blue was started ten years ago in a bid to enhance public awareness and support for the protection of our remaining marine wildlife. We implement communication campaigns that promote Hope Spots - areas that are critical to the health of the ocean - and encourage the development of new submersibles that can increase access to the sea, not just for learned scientists, but for people of all sorts working within deep ocean exploration and research.&nbsp;To enable the conservation of nature on an international level, we have decided to work with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>. Together with the company Esri - a GIS data gathering entity - we aim to develop a framework of data gathering that makes information more accessible so that people can track changes over time. The ultimate goal is to identify areas in the ocean that are either in great shape and should be protected and maintained that way, or to look at places like San Francisco Bay that have been greatly modified over time. There are now more than 130 places around the world with communities who are stepping up to protect and restore health to areas by working with local, state or national governments. By taking action now, we can make them better than they otherwise would be if we continue down the pathway of pollution and extraction. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/110495/image/large-d93b91a14735a5b30e95016ae54c4fa2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/110495">Yacht owners’ vessels have been used for research and for the exploration of our marine environment in order to better work out how to protect it. How else can superyacht owners help with the protection of marine life?There are many contributions that yacht owners can make in terms of providing new information about the seafloor. With the resources that many yacht owners have, they can gather knowledge and add them to a greater database that can be shared. Some humans have more power than others to make choices. They can take us to a better place, and that’s where those who actually own and operate these <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/largest-explorer-yachts" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">wondrous vessels that can travel the world</a> have the power to make a difference.&nbsp;We also work with an organisation called Deep Hope that builds little submersibles which can aid in the collection of data using Esri. This is also something that yacht owners can do: acquire small submersibles that can be submitted into this network. We can be part of the solution by acquiring, sharing knowledge and then strategically acting on the knowledge to provide protection for places that have enhanced value. It isn’t just about the protected areas: it’s about having an ethic of caring that fosters actions and policies that will lead to respect for the natural systems that keep us alive.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/109225/image/large-df17492ad05e84de80a49298b7235e76.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/109225">Are there specific areas of the ocean that you believe to be the most vulnerable and how can people identify areas in need of protection?&nbsp;The Hope Spots provide a starting point. These are places that people have nominated. But I would ask the yachting community to take stock of places themselves that they know need protection and which they care about. Of course, I could say the whole ocean - and you should be looking at the ocean in its entirety because all of it matters - but we can begin by pinpointing specific areas. This way, bit by bit, a network of hope develops which is not just hope, but action. Hope that leads to commitments that will make a difference.I think I appeal to the yachting community because I have seen a great deal of life under the ocean, but they have travelled the surface of the ocean and seen things that most people never get to see. I encourage these people to use that knowledge and to realise that they have the power to make a difference.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/110496/image/large-40442fde07c32279b91b8fd4b5b41549.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/110496">So far, have you been able to take advantage of any superyachts for the exploration work?I have seen it happening among some of those who have big ships like Paul Allen. I think the potential of what Paul Allen acquired with his use of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/270" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Octopus126.2m (414'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Octopus</a>, his ten-passenger submarine, and his remotely operated vehicle that enabled the exploration of places that we scientists never get to go is immense. He was a pioneer in some respects and has amassed a great library of data that gradually is being brought into scientific use and access. <img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/100603/image/large-2ba539e9cde15116f7b293fb32eec0d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100603">There is also a Norwegian yacht owner who is deliberately engaging scientists to explore and share their findings. And there is SeaKeepers - the organisation that has been encouraging the yachting community for decades to take on board instrumentation and gather data as they go to places that official government agencies or scientific expeditions rarely access. Knowing the ocean, knowing how it’s changing and being a part of making a difference is vital for the conservation of its wildlife. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/96280/image/large-d6a7de210e0b66bf23ef7ebed8428dd3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96280">What are your aspirations for Mission Blue over the next decade?We are starting to see a change through communities, champions and flock leaders around the world who are using their power to make a difference. We just need to scale it up. I hope that within the next ten years - the timeframe within which climate scientists are saying we need to act, otherwise we will face severe consequences - we can pull together. We can’t stop the direction of the changes that we have initiated, but we can make things better than they otherwise would be if we do not act.&nbsp;The gift of knowledge is powerful. It’s just a matter of using that knowledge to make a change. Once we have our fleet of little submersibles committed to not just sightseeing but also to systematically looking at places, we will be able to make a real difference. Everyone can contribute by reporting honestly what they see, and every yacht owner can be out there as a part of the action. They can get to know the nature of the planet in ways that we could not do prior to the present time. And what’s more exciting than that?

Refit contract for 110m superyacht Jubilee signed with Lürssen

After topping the sales market last year, the new owners of the 110m superyacht Jubilee have decided to sign a refit contract with Lürssen. 

Company founder Tommy Baldwin III made his first provision delivery in 2015 at the Sag Harbor Yacht Club in New York. This is a huge advantage compared to blindly shipping items from one of our offices and relying on third-party freight or logistics companies,” commented Tommy, who ensures that he can personally visit vendors regularly “to verify product quality, the facilities and maintain personal relationships.
