The superyacht features naval architecture from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, with exterior and interior design from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Felix Buytendijk Yacht Design (Company)">Felix Buytendijk Yacht Design</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/42" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Glade Johnson Design, Inc. (Company)">Glade Johnson Design</a>.&nbsp;The superyacht has a volume of 2,864 GT and can accommodate a total of 18 guests across nine spacious staterooms. The owner's private apartment features a private aft deck with dining area, sun beds and a fully certified helideck to aft. Built in 2009 as the third hull in a line of three superyachts designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1969" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Radiant110.0m (360'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2009">Radiant</a> is a close sister ship to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Pelorus</a> (2003) and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1850" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Raya110.0m (360'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2008">Al Raya</a> (ex Dilbar) which was completed in 2008. Her interior is the work of Canadian design duo <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2257" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yabu Pushelberg (Company)">Yabu Pushelberg</a>, and has been kept a closely guarded secret. Performance-wise, she can reach a top speed of 21 knots and cruises comfortably at 16 knots.

After meeting Eric Lepeingle, it is easy to see why he has established a successful career. In our relationships with clients and within the industry, we are being pushed to develop more in certain areas of the world, so it is the time to do it. Especially as clients and their expectations are evolving. As everyone knows, the way of buying has changed and the new yacht owner’s generation is driving new ways of thinking and enjoying products and so the actual onboard experience is what, I think, should also drive our way of thinking alongside our capacity to continuously think to improve what we need to do tomorrow. In five years time, these boats aren’t going to be the same. Another fond memory is a long time ago, I delivered a boat to a client in Porto Cervo and as we were entering into the harbour, he was there on the dock with his family, waiting for his new vessel. When he and his family entered the port, the smiles on their faces made me understand that our job in this industry is to bring happiness to people. The market town of Lymington can be found on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent, in the New Forest district of Hampshire, England. Set on the coast and with a rich maritime history behind it, there is plenty for the visitor to do, whether it’s visiting a quirky cafe on the high street to pick up your obligatory ‘nice cup of tea’, or hopping across on a ferry to the neighbouring beaches of the Isle of Wight. Looking at this sleepy setting from the outside, however, you might never guess that this also serves as the base for our next interview subject, British superyacht design maestro, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark Berryman</a>. For anyone familiar with the British designer’s work, the casual elegance and oriental motifs found throughout his working environment will come as no surprise, as well as the shelves of tasteful and natural interior fabric samples tucked neatly away. We sit down over lunch and chart the course of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>’s career so far, only occasionally interrupted by friendly interjections from Miff the office dog.Untangling the web of superyacht designers in their early years can be complicated. For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>, it began close to home when his brother Jim - also a designer - decided to dive into a new industry after seeing a project by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/41" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Donald Starkey Designs (Company)">Don Starkey</a> in a magazine. Shortly after graduating in Interior Architecture, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark</a> received a call from Jim asking if he’d like to come for an interview with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/41" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Donald Starkey Designs (Company)">Starkey</a>, and, before he knew it, he had landed the job. With the help of his new colleagues, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> taught himself computer-aided design for the first time and was ready to get stuck in. The next major part of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>’s formative years consisted of a decade at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a> with Steve Howard and Jonny Horsfield before he took the major step of setting up shop for himself and founding <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark Berryman Design</a> in 2007.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101168/image/large-aefbe24d0200c914e551e2eb45970890.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101168">&nbsp; The client for the 73.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3066" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Naia73.6m (241'6&quot;)Freire Shipyard2011">Naia</a> (previously Pegaso) followed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark</a> and gave him his first signing. Only a few months later, he also took on the 61.7-metre Mary Jean II before being approached by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> to design the interiors for one of the most important boats in his career: the 60-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1193" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caipirinha60.0m (196'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2009">Caipirinha</a> (previously Arkley) which had been started for a client who then opted to upscale to an 80-metre mid-way through the build.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101167/image/large-8e75ccf3199c1f7ef463276e5d0fbe31.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101167"> As <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> explains, “They knew we were a young design studio and were willing to give us a chance, asking if we could take this on as a production boat. We had just two months to design the whole boat, so we did two decks a month and I started doing it on my kitchen table before we’d even moved to our first premises.” Enter <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Imperial Yachts (Company)">Imperial Yachts</a> into the scene with a new client and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> was able to continue with the project until its completion. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>&nbsp;were very kind: they said, ‘we’ve told the client that if he buys the boat, you would be the designer.’ That project was an absolute pinnacle, for both us and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Imperial Yachts (Company)">Imperial</a>, and she even won Motor Yacht of the Year in the World Superyacht Awards in 2010. For&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Imperial Yachts (Company)">Imperial</a>, it was their first large boat and it was our first time working with Russian clients. We’ve done a lot of work with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Imperial Yachts (Company)">Imperial</a>&nbsp;since then.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101169/image/large-322d88a83d1f4bf107c3542cdc434d6f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101169"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/101170/image/large-022b84be4078b264539bc8e9c0789b6f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101170">Although the years following <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1193" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caipirinha60.0m (196'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2009">Arkley</a> have been busy for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>, we largely have to take his word for it. As is frequently the case for superyacht interior designers, much of the studio’s hard work will never be seen by the outside world. “I look back at longer-established yacht design studios and they’ve got such great portfolios they can show. As for us, we’re in our thirteenth year now and a lot of people don’t know a lot about us. We’ve never advertised and the work keeps coming in by word of mouth so hopefully we’re doing something right, but I would like to be able to put some more images on our website and say, look, we did this!”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101171/image/large-edc5df637262c39712178a500dab8aaa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101171">He continues, “As the years go by, there are more NDAs to be signed. I look at the projects we have done with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a>&nbsp;and I have often said to him, whether it’s a 50-metre or a 150-metre superyacht it’s out there and people can see it, this isn’t the case for us.” Speaking of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a>, the Norwegian superyacht design heavyweight is the man behind the exterior lines of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>’s largest publicly known superyacht to date, the 136-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6424" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flying Fox136.0m (446'2&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2019">Flying Fox</a>. Although he remains unsurprisingly reticent about the details of her interiors, it is clear from talking to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> that crafting the interiors for 100-metre+ boats brings with it a whole new set of challenges. “At that size, there are many regulations to consider and it is paramount to get them right. When you’re building and designing at that scale you want to give your client something that nobody else has, and although there are certain design factors which you must always take into account, with the right planning, you can achieve this whilst still creating something truly spectacular for your clients.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/100548/image/large-01ed583736086a5c18b99a6e3ebdf4b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100548">And what is it that characterises a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Mark Berryman</a> interior? “Our interiors are contemporary with clean lines and hints of Asian influences. I have a real passion for Japanese design and we like to use natural finishes such as bamboo and rattan. We’re also all about the tactile side of design. Our aim is to encourage owners and their guests to come into a space and be drawn into the materials and finishes.” Every client and superyacht project requires a fresh approach and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> has been pushed outside of his comfort zone on many occasions. This includes his involvement in designing the interiors of the 65-metre Admiral <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7032" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Life Saga65.0m (213'3&quot;)Admiral2019">Life Saga</a> where he was given a somewhat enigmatic design brief by the experienced owner. “The owner was looking for an interior that was simultaneously remarkable, calming and laid back. He said, ‘think of my interior like a cappuccino and add a little more milk in some areas and a little bit less in other areas’, and this really resonated with me.” Furthermore, as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> explains, he is often challenged to think outside of the box by his clients. “I love to design our in-house style with its Asian influences, but for someone to turn around and say, ‘I want this in a baroque style’, this means that I need to do some research on this and learn more. It makes you better as a designer because it’s opening you up to new ideas.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/100543/image/large-de7b816283b6e737ae53c57a4c1d7395.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100543">Over the years, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a>’s oeuvre has also included numerous significant refit projects, including a recent reworking of the 115-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Pelorus</a>. “It was nice because we could keep a lot of the original detailing that complements our design DNA, whilst still making it our own.” Whether it is a 60 or a 130-metre vessel, a new-build or a refit project, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> is always looking to create interior spaces in which his owners and guests feel truly relaxed – something which takes significant effort to achieve. “We want people to kick their shoes off, walk through the boat and fall into a sofa without a care in the world. You don’t need to stand on ceremony to use our spaces. The clients that we design for have made their money doing a fantastic job in the businesses they’re involved in, but their lifestyle is so full-on. When they finally get time to truly relax, it’s important to make the most of that. Of course, it takes a lot of work to make interiors that look effortless, but it’s worth it to see the response from our clients.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/13181/image/large-a4cc84e2794fb398c0913f2359a26725.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13181"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/101172/image/large-f92858062a010617ba9bf9ba572e383b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101172">Going forward, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Berryman Design Ltd (Company)">Berryman</a> has plenty to keep himself busy with, including a rare exterior design project for a previous client on an 85-metre superyacht, but that doesn't mean he'll be changing his approach to design, with his team remaining small and family-focused and keeping that all-important personal touch. SuperYacht Times sits down with interior design maestro Mark Berryman and discusses his career highlights.

Overlooking the city of Cape Town in Western Cape, South Africa, Table Mountain is one of the foremost and most famous tourist attractions found in the region, with thousands of visitors from all around the world flocking to the area to reach its summit via cableway or on foot. As well as the large array of flora and fauna which can be found as you make your ascent, the most distinctive aspect of a trip up Table Mountain is evident upon finally reaching the summit: the flat top which gives the landmark its name. &nbsp;Our next interview subject does not hail from Cape Town, or even call South Africa his home, but finds this South-African landmark to be an excellent analogy for describing his career in the superyacht industry so far. As he explains, “It’s not the highest mountain in the world, but you get up there and don’t come down again. You can just keep walking along the top and that’s what we’ve been able to do for a long time thanks to a string of really wonderful clients who have given us the opportunity to design boats for them.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/100870/image/large-96d2855e19a1abbdad57555661e8d6b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100870">And what remarkable boats these are. Superyachts springing from the drawing boards of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood Design</a> over the past few decades have included the seventh-largest superyacht currently in operation, the 147-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3962" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A+147.25m (483'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2012">A+</a> (previously known as Topaz), the iconic 115-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Pelorus</a> - launched by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> in 2003 - one of the most luxurious <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> vessels ever to grace the water, the 101.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3765" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Symphony101.5m (333'0&quot;)Feadship2015">Symphony</a>, the largest new-build boat to be built in the US to date, the 85.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Aquila</a> from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor Shipyards</a> (known as Cakewalk at the time of her 2010-launch), and many, many more. Of course, size isn’t everything for the British designer who first entered the industry under the wing of the late, great Jon Bannenberg, but it does show us something. Namely, that over a career spanning four decades, Tim Heywood has won himself something which isn’t easy to come by: the trust of some of the world’s most influential and private people to create extraordinary - and extremely private - floating homes for them. Plus, as the affable designer hints at throughout our conversation, these clients often end up coming back for more. <img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/78005/image/large-68ce5d748a1e9b1dc7a0e14a5a978090.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/78005">“We’ve done some remarkable work over the years, and I do sometimes have to pinch myself when I look back.” Looking back is not something that the designer likes to do often, preferring to keep his attention focused firmly on the next exterior design project (or five). Allowing ourselves the liberty to look back, how did Heywood get to where I see him today, moving between his tranquil and beautifully laid-out studio space annexe and the elegant country house he shares with his business partner and now wife, Vanessa on the outskirts of Headley in Hampshire, England?&nbsp;With a background in industrial design engineering, Heywood is the first to admit that his initial meeting with Mr Bannenberg had something fortuitous about it. “I approached another company who I thought were looking for an illustrator and they said that they were terribly sorry, but they weren’t looking any more. A friend of theirs was looking for someone though: a guy called Jon in Chelsea who did yacht design. So I rang them up and they said come by tomorrow and I thought, ‘I’d better draw some yachts.’ I worked through the whole night drawing my first ever yachts and the longest one I drew was about 18 feet long. I really had no idea about big yachts - and I came in and got offered the job starting the next day.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/5867/image/large-e0073473eec322b5ecf995161a7f8d72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/5867">Once given the chance, it didn’t take long for Heywood to earn his stripes with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a>, visiting shipyards all around the world and relishing the opportunities it brought him.&nbsp;“I loved every minute of being in a shipyard and the effect of seeing what I’d drawn actually appear on the slipway. It’s a truly wonderful thing to stand on the quay and wave goodbye to them and off they go around the world.”&nbsp;Quick to attribute much of his early success to the influence of the English-Australian yacht designer who&nbsp;“created the yacht design industry”, as Heywood sees it, Heywood moved from being a&nbsp;“kind of jobbing designer, doing everything and anything Jon wanted me to do”, to a designer in his own right, conducting client meetings, assembling contracts and running the complete project himself (with Bannenberg looking over his shoulder from time to time). By 1996, however, it was time for a change. Bannenberg had decided to become part-owner of an Australian shipyard in a move which Heywood was certain could only be detrimental to his relationships with European shipyards. For Heywood, it was the perfect opportunity to break off and make his own luck and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood Designs</a> was born, together with the help and guiding hands of co-director Vanessa, his partner, constant supporter and encouraging influencer.<img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/93577/image/large-719c165ade67a041abdf668315b8b972.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/93577">It wasn’t only the company car and computer which Heywood was allowed to keep when he left <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a>. “I was working on&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limitless96.25m (315'9&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1997">Limitless</a>&nbsp;at the time and Jon said, ‘I’ll pay you a fee, but I want you to maintain control over&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limitless96.25m (315'9&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1997">Limitless</a>&nbsp;and complete her. I was obviously very pleased and carried it on with him, and then the shipyard took me on to do the wheelhouse and crew accommodation and that cemented my relationship with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>.” Since going solo back in 1996, Heywood has decided to keep it that way, offering me a wry smile when he describes receiving emails from ill-informed internship hopefuls keen to demonstrate their enthusiasm to join the ‘<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood Design</a> team’. Heywood’s characteristically kind solution to this predicament is to direct their attention towards larger superyacht design outfits such as his long-time working associates, and former colleagues at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a>’s studio, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Terence Disdale Design (Company)">Terence Disdale</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Andrew Winch</a> in London where they might have better luck. &nbsp;Working as this team of two, with partner Vanessa, represents the perfect set-up for Heywood as it allows him to concentrate on what he loves the most: the actual nitty-gritty work of design. “I get to do all the design work, and that is what I love: be it a 140-metre piece of sculpture, a bollard or a stainless-steel door handle which is going to be on the exterior door of this wonderful yacht.” Speaking of bollards, it is when he is describing a bollard design he devised for the 115-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2003">Pelorus</a> that Heywood’s excitement for his vocation shines through. “I was looking at the bollard design and thinking ‘it’s a bollard, a bit like other bollards, but could I put a piece of teak decking in the top?’ I asked&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>&nbsp;and they said, ‘Ah, we will speak to the stainless steel manufacturers and see what it possible’ and they eventually came back and said, yes they could make a recess. A lot of my yachts since then have had a teak top to the bollard, which looks great, plus you can sit on it, even when it’s been in the sun as it’s nowhere near as hot as sitting on stainless steel. Little details like that - I get such a big kick out of them.”<img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/100113/image/large-c05992f1973329e9da397b620f18e6e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100113">And then there’s the deck columns: “When you go on a lot of boats, you will see a 120mm diameter pipe which is holding up the deck column, but if you go on my boats, you don’t see that, you’ll see an arching piece of aluminium, beautifully finished and clad with teak or painted bronze with lights built in. I feel that every detail on a yacht should have design time and effort invested in it.” Easy as it is to become absorbed in listening to Heywood waxing lyrical about these design details, it is the sum of their parts that has won him his extraordinary reputation. His sleek and ‘athletically feminine’ lines are somewhat of a trademark of his work, although not something he feels in any way limited by. This is evidenced by the 62.4-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> Limited Edition 199 superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Event62.4m (204'9&quot;)Amels2013">Event</a> delivered in 2013 which displays these feminine “sculpted curves” alongside more militaristic and faceted aspects (a kind of “origami effect” as Heywood describes it). For the British designer, it is the ability to create massive forms and shapes through his creations which has kept him primarily focused on exterior rather than interior design, especially in the latter part of his career - although his highly industrious personality also comes into play. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/93587/image/large-fe745cab7117b17d62f19f81bb9df4b6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/93587">“I love the grander scale, but as the projects got bigger and bigger, I realised that the interior takes as much time, maybe even more time, as the exterior. I thought, if I just do the exteriors, I can do maybe three boats simultaneously, if I do the interior, I can only do one in that time. I don’t want to undertake a complete interior again. Let the usual suspects of our interior design get on with it! I’ve worked with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Terence Disdale Design (Company)">Terence Disdale</a>&nbsp;on 4-5 boats and likewise, I’ve worked with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Andrew Winch</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/88" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laura Sessa Romboli (Company)">Laura Sessa</a>&nbsp; - there are probably seven interior design companies that have had work on our projects. It’s nice that we’ve given out so much work - let’s keep these guys busy!”One of the most significant collaborations in Heywood’s career was when he designed a whole range of yachts for Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a>, the Limited Editions range, including the popular 55-metre LE180 which has sold more than 24 units since its inception in 2011. This represented an interesting test for the designer. “The larger the boat is, the easier it is to make it elegant, but I liked the challenge of trying to apply the design formulas I’ve created to smaller boats. You put as much design effort into the first yacht of the series as you would with an individual design because that’s what it is: an individual design."<img src="/uploads/store/photo/61331/image/large-f629339aa4cc79f0e35bb89d7db975a8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/61331">In any case, whether it is the fifteenth boat in a series for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> or a fully-confidential one-off custom 100m+ project, it is his profound understanding of the clients for whom he is designing that has kept Heywood at the peak of the design business for the last 40 years and ensured his longevity within the industry. Heywood quite frequently finds himself in that rare club of those invited back onto superyachts following their completion: an invitation that he may politely decline. “These boats that I’m involved in are people’s homes. You can live on a yacht and run your business and if you don’t tell people where you are, they won’t know. One of the things that drives this industry is providing privacy for these people. I went on a boat in a shipyard recently that was nearly completed and the captain asked me, ‘Would you like to see the inside?’ And I said, ‘No, you’ve got a beautiful exterior which is my design, and I am very pleased with that, but that is enough’. If the clients wish me to come and have a look around, I’d be happy to, but these are people’s private homes. This means I’ve still not seen the interiors of some of my yachts!”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/93582/image/large-b4636ed39a0242f9dc20b0168a404d47.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/93582">Indeed, this consideration for the needs of his clients goes right to the core of Heywood’s design philosophy and carries with it a refreshing pragmatism. “I’ve always tried to produce work that I feel pushes the envelope a little bit but doesn’t go wacky, Vanessa’s opinion is a great stabilising factor! For the client who invests a lot of time, effort and a substantial amount of money into these boats, they know that if they have a Tim Heywood designed boat, they will recoup the money they spent later on.”&nbsp;This approach does not mean, however, that Heywood suffers from any shortage of tantalising design ideas. What is the most challenging superyacht project which he has not yet been able to build? “It was a 140-metre which had an exterior covered in faceted glass. I went to see a repeat client with five sketches to see which direction to go in and this was one of them, and he liked it. I was surprised and I started developing it. It was something totally unique and different but then he decided not to proceed with the project yet. Yet. So we’ll see!” Appropriately vague for a designer who values client confidentiality so highly, Heywood has a “couple of projects” with which he is currently involved, as well as&nbsp;“a nice little project in Germany which isn’t a yacht.” But whenever it is that we see the next instantly-recognisable <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. Jamie Edmiston is one of the most recognisable faces of the superyacht business - and it’s not only down to his trademark red hair. At the helm of the long-standing British brokerage firm Edmiston &amp; Company since 2014, Jamie has been an instrumental figure in the world of superyachts for a number of years. Originally joining his father’s company in 2001, he quickly injected a much-needed burst of fresh, new thinking to the traditional brokerage sphere. That thinking resulted in an incredibly successful branding campaign for the Edmiston name - something which, at the time, was unheard of in superyacht brokerage. After all, the world was still new to the digital game and, if you can even imagine it now, Facebook was yet to be born. Looking to the future once again in an ever-evolving landscape, here we get Jamie’s insight into the past, present and future of superyacht brokerage.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/49662/image/large-7742892b261fae6afb21fc3dedcb2ab9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/49662">1. When you were appointed CEO how did you ensure the company continued to play that leading role?&nbsp;The yacht business has grown significantly in the last 20 years, and as part of that rapid expansion, several companies and individuals stand out as defining significant aspects of the business. In terms of brokerage, there are a handful of firms that stand out as innovators. I think it’s fair to say that Edmiston is one of those. In 2001 when I joined my father at the company, we launched the red Edmiston brand. This was one of our most important innovations. Branding was - and I think always will be - my first passion, and was relatively unheard of in superyacht brokerage at the time. &nbsp;Within the brokerage sector only one other company initially reacted, and even today there are probably only a few companies that have a notable brand identity. &nbsp; &nbsp;The business has evolved. I’m very proud to say that Edmiston has remained one of the key players in the industry, and I am committed to ensuring we continue to be at the forefront and maintain a leadership role.&nbsp;2. In 2011 you took a three-year hiatus, leading an investment in the luxury brand LINLEY. Can you see yourself working outside of the superyacht business again?Definitely. But I’m not planning on leaving the yachting business any time soon. Firstly I am fortunate enough to have such an established position. Secondly, Edmiston is our family business and I cannot imagine leaving that. Of course, other things do interest me and if the opportunity presents itself I could very likely explore these interests… perhaps as an investor or in some kind of executive or non-executive role. &nbsp;As I said, branding is a particular area of interest for me. &nbsp;Running LINLEY was very rewarding and enjoyable, and a lot of the success of the business came from my connections within yachting. One of the great things that the yachting business affords you is the opportunity to meet and connect with people who have been successful in a wide range of things.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15190/image/large-25a003ee9fc830f0b3d8ae8704878bea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15190">3. As well as the day-to-day running of the business, you’re also very much an active yacht broker. What are some of your most memorable sales?As a company, Edmiston has been involved in quite a number of significant sales over the years. Just a couple that spring to mind includes the 115-metre Lürssen-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)">Pelorus</a>, the 112.8-metre Bremer Vulkan-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/299" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Le Grand Bleu112.8m (370'1&quot;)">Le Grand Bleu</a>, and the 74.5-metre Blohm + Voss-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/901" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zeus74.5m (244'5&quot;)">Enigma</a> (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/901" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zeus74.5m (244'5&quot;)">Zeus</a>) which we’ve sold at least twice.&nbsp;Personally, the sale of the 110-metre Lürssen project <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1969" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Radiant110.0m (360'11&quot;)">Darius</a> (now<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1969" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Radiant110.0m (360'11&quot;)">&nbsp;Radiant</a>) was quite memorable…it was the largest brokerage deal ever at that time. With similar lines to the original <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1850" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ona110.0m (360'11&quot;)">Dilbar</a> (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1850" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ona110.0m (360'11&quot;)">Ona</a>), she was undoubtedly influenced by<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)">&nbsp;Pelorus</a>. The other sale that stands out is the 60-metre Benetti <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/508" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Andreas L60.0m (196'10&quot;)">Andreas L</a>. The owner is a close friend of mine and she has great sentimental meaning to him and his family, being named after his late father. &nbsp;&nbsp;4. You travel a lot in your role, and a necessary part of the job is testing the product. Tell us: what makes the perfect yacht?&nbsp;I have been fortunate enough to spend time onboard yachts over the years. Whilst the majority is business related, there have also been a handful of occasions that have been for pleasure. The design and innovative engineering side of yachting really interests me. A yacht has to be as technologically advanced as a warship but has to be as comfortable as a five-star hotel. A yacht is somewhere for barefoot living and is - undoubtedly - the best place to holiday as a family. And if you need to be working but still want to be with your family, a yacht provides this amazing opportunity to move from business to family time almost immediately.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20969/image/large-f051682a6cccded7d1824493db379c09.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20969">5. How do you see the role of the digital world developing in regards to superyacht brokerage and charter? &nbsp;The development of the digital world has certainly helped facilitate the timely delivery of accurate information to clients. &nbsp;This has been the greatest advantage I think. The advent of online video, high-resolution imagery and very immersive multimedia experiences allows people - some of whom have never chartered a yacht before - to get a great idea of what the experience on board a yacht can be. This in itself can only help grow the yacht business. Aside from media, I’m not convinced that digital developments such as Uber or Airbnb style platforms will work in yachting, I think the transactional elements are far more complicated than people perhaps recognise. &nbsp;6. Change in the traditional world of yachting is slow. Will we see significant changes to ownership in the near future?&nbsp;There is a lot of talk about new ownership models. I don’t really know how much the traditional models of ownership can or needs to change. In my experience, fractional ownership for large yachts is a challenging proposition. As yet no one has done it successfully. Possibly someone will make it successful at the lower end of the market for yachts up to 100 feet, but in my view, once you get to the larger yachts there are many obstacles and hurdles that just don’t make it compelling. A yacht is not a jet. A jet is a business tool that you use for a set period of time - maximum 14 hours - to get from A to B, and the successful operators have a large number of planes available that can be easily relocated geographically. A yacht is a location-based experience; a home away from home that takes time to position from one location to another. It’s a different proposition which makes these alternative models a challenge. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/16369/image/large-965bae404080e4b5423574ff834bb23f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16369">7. There are a couple of new charter companies that are backed by superyacht owners, who market an alternative to the traditional charter process. What do you think of this development?I am a businessman; therefore I support innovation and respect those who are prepared to invest their own money in new businesses within the yachting space. I think the models such as Ahoy Club and Yotha may work at the smaller end of the market - say from 40 to 75 feet - but for larger charters, the role of an experienced broker will always be key. I spoke to a client recently who told me he had been offered a yacht via an online broker for 10% less than we had offered it to him and his son had booked it to save some money. He told me that he will never do that again. He said that “the planning was a nightmare, no one was managing the itinerary and helping us with the planning, and when we had an issue with the yacht there was no one to call and help sort the problems. What should have been a relaxing holiday was the opposite.”&nbsp;The key point to understand is this; yachting has a lot of moving parts, therefore it can be complicated, and when it is complicated you want an expert there to guide you and help you sort problems. That support is priceless; I would argue that it is false economy to do it on the cheap because it doesn’t always work out. Never underestimate the value of using a leading broker; you are buying their network, their relationships and their experience - much of which has been built up over many years. When you are trying to relax that is priceless.8. What do you identify as some of the key areas for improvement in the brokerage industry?&nbsp;As with any business, there are areas that could be improved, but equally, I don’t think this is a broken business. There are many examples of successful companies and individuals who do a fantastic job, both in terms of leadership and innovation. If you look at how the industry presents itself nowadays, versus 15 years ago, the developments and advancements have been significant, particularly in terms of marketing and getting the message of yachting out to new people around the world. &nbsp;&nbsp;Organisations such as Sybass, LYBRA and events such as the Monaco Yacht Show, are continually pushing the yachting message and whilst there will always be new clients we want to attract, on the whole I think its been successful.&nbsp;More and more people are discovering yachting; and once discovered it's pretty addictive. No holiday on earth compares to one on board a large yacht. Yes, it is expensive, but it delivers so much in terms of levels of service, privacy, comfort, security. &nbsp; You only need to look at social media to see how many more people are enjoying a holiday on board a yacht nowadays.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/18829/image/large-eab2ac9f90cb1244b9a2ff4bdcaff14c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/18829">9. How has the role of broker changed in a rapidly evolving superyacht business?&nbsp;The fundamental role of the broker in any industry has not really changed, and I do not know how much it can change. A broker – in any industry - puts a deal together between two parties and takes all the stress in between and makes a deal happen. &nbsp;A broker acts as a shock absorber to make a deal happen. between the two involved parties. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;In yachting, a good broker has the ability to make a deal happen – not just deliver messages between parties. They need to not only understand their subject, but also the people they are dealing with, right through the spectrum. There are plenty of examples in yachting where brokers with completely different styles of doing business are both successful.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/41790/image/large-3fd05144629a31880d61507719312e72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41790">10. What is your advice for a successful career in the superyacht business?We get a lot of CV’s and enquiries for roles in the yacht business, and where possible, I try and meet as many people as I can. Personally, I am less concerned with someone’s age; talent is what really counts. And whilst experience is important in yachting, it’s not the only defining point. Hard work, drive and intelligence will always play a key role in success; we have a number of young talented people at Edmiston who are considered to be amongst the best in the industry.&nbsp;I tell those interested in getting involved in the brokerage business that it’s important to understand that yacht broking is the ‘disappointment business’. You can work for weeks or even months on a deal, only for it to collapse at the last moment. If you can learn to deal with that and accept that disappointment element, you are 50% there. Once you have reconciled that; the next attributes are hard work and commitment - you need to be prepared to work whenever you are awake. This is not a 9-5 business; the yacht business is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It’s a way of life as much as a job; and if you look around the industry, the relatively small group of brokers who are consistently successful are those who truly live it. And of course, the last key attribute is luck. The 110-metre Ona in Monaco

Launched at the Lürssen shipyard in Germany in 2008, the 110m superyacht Ona (ex Dilbar) was designed by Tim Heywood, and shares a rather similar exterior profile with her two sisters, Pelorus (2003) and Radiant (2009). Her highly ornate interior is the work of designer Alberto Pinto. Before having had taken delivery of Ona, her owner had a 66-metre Oceanco superyacht, which was sold and is now known as Natita. Since taking delivery Ona, the owner has taken delivery of yet another yacht, this time a 156-metre superyacht built by the same German shipyard. Fitted with a combined diesel mechanic and diesel-electric propulsion system, Ona is considered one of the ‘greener’ large superyachts in operation today. Hiding behind Ona is on of Monaco’s residents, the 116-metre Atlantis II as well as the 92.5-metre Feadship, Royal Romance.

Originally delivered in 1991, Enigma is one of the most iconic yachts of the modern superyacht age. With her instantly recognisable convex glass and her warship inspired lines, Enigma is capable of 35 knots, with diesel and gas turbine engines producing 28,500hp. Equally, at 18 knots she can deliver a range of over 4000 miles.

Based on a Dutch naval vessel platform, the 141 metre Yas has finally made her way to the Mediterranean after being launched in 2011 at the ADM Shipyards in the UAE. Her interior was completed in March this year, and was designed by the Pierrejean studio in France, who also designed her exterior. Her unconventional styling is sure to peak the interest of many superyacht enthusiasts around the world, and we look forward to seeing more of her as the season continues. The Top 20 largest yachts ever built in Germany

Radiant was built in 2009 by the Lürssen Shipyard in Bremen. She has a length of 110 metres and an exterior design by Tim Heywood. Her interior by Yabu Pushelberg is a closely guarded secret, and no photos have ever been published. As far as we know, Radiant is the only superyacht ever built, to have an interior by design duo Yabu Pushelberg. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/470">Dilbar</a> is a 110 metre Lürssen, built in 2008 to a design of Tim Heywood and with an interior by Alberto Pinto. Dilbar is a close sistership to superyacht <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298">Pelorus</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1969">Radiant</a>. She ranks as the 23rd largest yacht in the world. Dilbar was the first yacht in the world with particle filters on the main engine exhausts. Cruising at 16 knots, her range is approx 6000nm, on 280.000 liters of fuel. She has an impressive gross tonnage of 5317 tons. With a top speed in the region of 35 knots, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/234">Ecstasea</a> is one of the fastest yachts in the Top 100 Largest Yachts. Here <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/234">Ecstasea</a> is seen at anchor together with Pelorus. The two yachts have been seen cruising together over the last couple of weeks. The 115 metre Pelorus is designed by Tim Heywood with an interior by Terence Disdale, Pelorus was built for a Middle Eastern owner who sold her to a Russian owner soon after completion. Pelorus was once again sold in 2011. Pelorus is powered by twin 5.300 hp Wärtsilä 12V26 engines, allowing her to reach an impressive top speed of 20 knots. Cruising at 16 knots, her range is approx 6000nm, on 280.000 liters of fuel. She has an impressive gross tonnage of 5317 tons. The 86 metre superyacht Ecstasea and the 115 metre Pelorus at anchor

The Palumbo Group acquired the Malta Superyacht Facilities in March 2011. The yard is currently fully in operation, carrying out over 30 superyacht projects in only a few weeks. The already extensive portfolio shows well-known names such as Atlantis II, Pelorus, Phocea, Prince Abdulaziz, Senses and Slipstream. With expert knowledge in shipyard and marine industry since 1967, combined with the already highly skilled engineers and workforce of the Malta Shipyard, Palumbo Malta Superyacht refit centre can accommodate all kinds of requirements. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136369/image/large-8852461b713e77396c7b661e524f8f13.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136369">The Super Yacht Facility covers an area of 45,000 m2, including two dry-docks(170m x 25m), of which one is equipped with a retractable shed. Docks and quays are served with rail mounted cranes with a maximum lifting capacity of 50 tons. By September 2011, Palumbo Malta Superyachts will offer a range of services, including a showroom displaying several yachting products, and also its refit and repair services, which allow for engine overhaul, furnishing and woodwork tapestry for an extensive type of yachts, also accounting for the fibreglass smaller boats. In fact, the yard is planning to have a separate open air area for smaller yachts, ranging between 18m to 48m with a maximum 300 DWT. This area will have a slipway and will be equipped with a syncrolift and a Self Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) able to transport yachts up to 300DWT. Moreover, a renovated building close to the yard will be utilized as an ideal protective shed for painting works, storage for the winter season, and other possible uses required. Moreover, new exciting developments are at the stage of design, where an old Smithery building will be renovated into an complex for Captains and crew, including duplex apartments with magnificent harbor views, fully equipped gymnasium, self service kitchenette and dining area, bar, Captains office including wifi connections, and a relaxing and socializing area including lounge area, TV room and two open air large terraces. Surprisingly, Eclipse is available for selective charters with  SuperYachtsMonaco.
