Her exterior, created by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover Design</a>, is easily recognisable by her distinctive colour and the innovative shape, with a deck design that combines angular and rounded forms. Her interior, crafted by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4998" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lawson Robb (Company)">Lawson Robb</a>, matches her innovative exterior, complemented by the naval engineering of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a>, who have equipped her with a Fast Displacement XL hull. The sub-500 GT vessel boasts a technologically advanced pool that conserves water by enabling overnight heating and treatment, effortlessly transitioning from a solid deck to a swimming pool at the push of a button. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman2021">Phi</a> provides accommodations for up to 12 guests across six staterooms, with a master suite featuring its own private deck and panoramic views.&nbsp;

A Russian businessman has lost a legal appeal against the United Kingdom High Court to release the 58.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman2021">Phi</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/210599/image/large-75ae3c0513611175370b3f4ba5ad0a7d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/210599">The Netherlands-built motor yacht was the first vessel detained in British waters last year, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. SYT Synopsis January: Revolutionary rebuilds and radical designs

The Dutch superyacht designer Cor D. Rover was quite literally born on the water. “I was born aboard an inland barge like one of those you can see in this marina,” he casually told me waving to the run of traditional Dutch boats lined up outside his floating office on the Nieuw Maass river in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254388/image/large-1bd9fdd1f9d322a2e45dfe712159c47b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254388">With the lights gently swaying above our heads as his floating office rode the undulating waves, he continued his story. “I’m one of six and all of us have a strong connection with the water. In the warmer months we were always swimming, sailing, or enjoying all types of water sports,” he said with deep nostalgia.As a Dutchman, Cor and his siblings lived a life not out of the ordinary; for anyone that’s visited the country or knows its inhabitants well, the waterways are much more than a picturesque backdrop. But not every Dutchman makes a career out of this lifestyle – in that regard, Cor is one of the few exceptions. “It nearly wasn’t to be though,” Cor chuckled. “I have always been interested in technology – everything that moves, in fact – and the plan was originally to become an aeroplane designer.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254402/image/large-9767d9531d56e118710729bee89861f3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254402">But he couldn’t shake the itch for ships and shipbuilding; living amongst the great yards just outside Rotterdam in Hardinxveld-Giessendam inspired him to stick to his roots. “I was born on a boat, lived close to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a> and, really, ships have always been a major staple of my life,” Cor said. “It just made sense to pursue mechanical engineering and shipbuilding at university.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/118269/image/large-3fb2b240d2a5cdafb9a85edecc52836e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/118269">After graduating in 1986, Cor’s began to fill his notepads with yacht designs, working under the patronage of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Frank Mulder</a> for 11 years. In the small studio just outside of Amsterdam, Cor developed an apt penmanship for aesthetics and the clean exterior styling he’s known and praised for today.“Prior to joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Frank Mulder Design</a> my work was purely technical,” Cor confessed. “It was a steep learning curve getting a grasp on how to execute strong theoretical designs with clean aesthetics.” His work at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Frank Mulder Design</a> laid the foundations for his success, and after building a strong reputation within the industry Cor set out on his own, founding his eponymously named studio in 1997. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15755/image/large-076fab1ff808b285a7f1c4d31162ea20.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15755"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15710/image/large-6a33de09be0a97c15d8b308069510a96.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15710">To date, under his own insignia, Cor has designed 75 yachts 24-metres in length or longer and an astonishing number of smaller yachts. Out of those 75 larger yachts, 66 are currently in operation, the largest being the 67-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5659" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seasense67.0m (219'10&quot;)Benetti SpA2017">Seasense</a> built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> and delivered in 2017. But this superyacht will soon be superseded by an all-new 60-metre Ice Class explorer with 1,700 GT of interior volume – 525 GT more than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5659" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seasense67.0m (219'10&quot;)Benetti SpA2017">Seasense</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254401/image/large-0ca6a11c0a5e7737148da28154bb431f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254401"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254399/image/large-037dcbb36984575a2047fa2846cc734d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254399">Cor was pretty guarded about this latest project but did confirm that the design had been finalised and approved by the client and will be built in the Netherlands. Another forthcoming project that Cor teased but was just as discreet about was a new full-custom 33-metre motor yacht that will also be built locally.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254386/image/large-22d7079e18cb37f60772e620532cb09e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254386">Working out of such a traditional enclave of the Netherlands, you’d expect his walls to be adorned with classic vessels – but this couldn’t be further from the truth. His 1930s office, originally used by the local police force before the Second World War, is a harbinger of the past.Yet the artistic black and white prints of his diverse fleet that fight for your attention, are anything but. Before she could embark on her maiden voyage and bask in the Mediterranean heat she visited London. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> was quickly pounced upon by the British authorities, as a consequence of Putin’s actions in Ukraine. Despite not being on the sanction list, the owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> had his brand-new superyacht arrested – and, to this day, the legal battle persists. But the story that many of us don’t know is how she came to be.&nbsp;“A client approached me around five years ago who wanted a superyacht that was at once unusual and outstanding,” Cor explained. “The client loved technology and wanted only the best features onboard. I had only recently patented my ‘dump tank eliminating pool floor’ that makes use of an inflatable rubber seal to turn the pool into a ballast when not in use. Typically the pool water needs to be drained when the yacht’s cruising, but with our system a client can ‘lock the water’ in and move freely, saving both time and energy.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254394/image/large-31b8a0e91d96a1fe33e654940bd337eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254394">Radical designs call for radical measures – and the client was all for it. “Let’s build a boat around the pool,” he exclaimed after Cor pitched the idea. But the rest of the design didn’t materialise until later that year.“One evening during a boat show in Beijing, Perry van Oossanen (founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a>) and I were sitting on the top floor of the hotel burning some hours, discussing projects. When I brought up this latest design we started to draw it out and landed on the idea of designing the world’s longest sub-500 GT superyacht – it was perfect for the project.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/211064/image/large-05f4888722b47787984d0074b815a890.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/211064">Perry van Oossanen incorporated his world-renowned Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) and oversaw the engineering of the project, while Cor D. Rover took charge of the styling. “Together we created an intriguing design that pushes boundaries,” Cor reflected.“It’s a record-breaking yacht that comes with compromises, as it has an extremely narrow bow. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> has all the characteristics of a sailing yacht, and we needed a builder with this expertise. A sailboat builder that’s used to optimising every cubic inch.” It then comes as no surprise that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> was approached for the project.&nbsp;“You don’t go to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> and ask to make the best deal in terms of costs, you go to Royal Huisman to build the best,” Cor said. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has an incredible pedigree and they were very happy to sign a major motor yacht contract, especially as sailing yachts are strangely a diminishing market.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254392/image/large-b7ea46706da7262c5c622dcaed61adef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254392">With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> being such a slender design, it was paramount to optimise living space. The London-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4998" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lawson Robb (Company)">Lawson Robb</a> took charge of her interior styling and created “a tranquil atmosphere that has an incredibly family-friendly general arrangement,” as Cor describes it. However, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> only carries a single rescue tender on the foredeck: all the paraphernalia is carried by the Alia-built support yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/211063/image/large-a93164b8b90f4b30892b6f9b92fb000e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/211063">“Perry and I also worked together on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a> which we designed with a pure focus on practicality. While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> has all the onboard entertainment, the sub-300 GT <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a> has all the tenders, toys and additional fuel.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/212581/image/large-780bbfaeab36c973bac71affa43b8750.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/212581">Full-custom projects are only half of the operations at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover Design</a> though, and the studio is perhaps best known for its work with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a>: a prolific builder that launches one FD Series yacht most months – and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover</a> can be accredited to each of these builds. Currently, a total of 62 are built or in-build. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/212589/image/large-b91362d551b9c2a26c2952e5e6ce01eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/212589">“We approached Horizon at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show - 2023">Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show</a> in 2012 with a design that we believed perfect for a production series. Our design maximised the amount of real estate possible onboard a 24-metre platform, incorporating a five-stateroom layout that’s typically found on much larger yachts. John Lu, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon</a>, saw the plans and immediately saw the potential: ‘Let’s build it!’ he declared there and then.” And the rest is history. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254395/image/large-b8325ba0aa8151d2b88130a53c9545ce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254395">A major focus for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a> was to be family-friendly and a safe place to be on the water. “We created SUVs for the sea,” Cor reflected. “Aesthetically an SUV looks safe, sturdy and practical; clients feel protected when they’re onboard.” It wasn’t long until a number of other designers and builders were adopting style cues from the popular series; imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/199549/image/large-d39010f9f0382e7c46327c85016a8ce4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/199549"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design</a> has since gone on to work with other shipyards, designing exclusive production series all around the world. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena Yachts</a> in Turkey is another big client for Cor, and his studio has designed its entire fleet to date – not exterior this time, though, but interior. “My studio has grown over the years and, after losing a few big jobs to studios that offered both exterior and interior design, I expanded the team to offer the full suite of services: exterior and interior design.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254389/image/large-f1f509610c893494282f141cd9ae6392.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254389">During my visit, the team is made up of seven designers, one of whom is Cor’s daughter. It’s a small yet mighty team operating from a quaint traditional corner of the Netherlands, championing innovation and ground-breaking design.

Cor D. Rover talks radical yacht design: Phi, Phi Phantom and new undisclosed projects

The role of a naval architect in yachting is truly unique. Dealing with numerous aspects of a vessel’s design both above and below the water – hull design, stability, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, aesthetics, strength, stiffness, seaworthiness, safety, classification and so on – there is no comparable role to be found in aerospace or civil architecture.&nbsp;But what, exactly, does the role of a naval architect entail, and how can one enter this career from the outside? Here, we speak to Perry van Oossanen and Niels Moerke, Managing Directors of the Dutch studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a> to find out the answers. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252116/image/large-2550c92bf5d9e0073d03032470feee49.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252116">What is the difference between naval architecture and yacht design? Niels: In the end, the naval architect is responsible for the overall performance and safety of a boat, whereas the designer is responsible for the look and feel and emotion that comes through for the owner. It’s about function before form for us. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252115/image/large-b1cd2ab0ce5d3babe9770fa4786d463a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252115">Why do you need a naval architect for each individual project?&nbsp;Perry: Every project needs its own naval architect because every single project is different. Even when a project starts off with a similar design brief, each owner will have their own unique and specific requirements for how they want to use the yacht, which means that there will always be distinguishing features between each project.&nbsp;We sometimes have projects which start off looking very similar and then small things can change along the way, meaning that you end up with totally different vessels – even a little change can have a huge impact on the naval architecture. In short, you cannot simply transplant the naval architecture from one vessel to another. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218526/image/large-4a9e4c72d916159c74714db737a60419.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218526">How much maths is involved with being a naval architect? Perry: You do need to be numerate to be a naval architect, but it is more about number crunching than maths, which can be quite time-consuming. Most of the maths is solved by the computer software that we use, so it’s more about having patience and being willing to work hard. How do I become a naval architect?Niels: Firstly, you can attend a naval architecture school. There are both bachelor's and master’s degree levels available. When you finish this degree, you are not a naval architect, but you will at least know the basics. We often find that in university you learn all of the different aspects individually, but how they come together in the design of a project, you can only learn by doing it.&nbsp;To this end, we always have two or three students doing internships at our studio to help them gain this vital hands-on experience. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203573/image/large-b0ffbb2d2a5154f0bfb579830d652dae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203573">What have been some stand-out projects for you? Perry: One of my favourites was the 60-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5673" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Samurai60.3m (197'10&quot;)Alia Yachts2016">Samurai</a> we did with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alia Yachts (Company)">Alia Yachts</a>, as we had a truly fantastic team working alongside us on this. Other projects which stand out for me include the 65-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> Galactica Star (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3676" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Illusion65.0m (213'3&quot;)Heesen Yachts2013">Illusion</a>) – our first Fast Displacement project – and we’ve also really enjoyed working with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Project Phi</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213404/image/large-4b06f6442e09ca55c680c2ccfe9052b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213404">What are the most rewarding elements of your role?&nbsp;Perry: For me, it is the fact that you can have a big impact on the end result of a project, much more so than if you were working in other related fields. If you chose a career in aerospace, for example, you will be one of hundreds of engineers working on a new aeroplane, whereas in yachting, you will be part of a team of just two or three people. In this way, you have a great responsibility and will be helping to shape some of the most complex structures ever being built.&nbsp;Another highly rewarding aspect can be found in the teamwork behind a yachting project. This is not just our team in the office, but also working alongside the designers, the shipyard and the owner’s team. Speaking personally, I also really enjoy the process of creating something – I find it really fun!&nbsp;Finally, how do you explain the role of a naval architect to people at dinner parties?&nbsp;Perry: This is an interesting one! Sometimes I say that I am a shipbuilding engineer, or that I am an architect, but for boats, not buildings.&nbsp;Niels: I tend to explain it by saying what we don’t do – we don’t create a nice picture, but our job is to make sure that the vessel sails efficiently, safely and comfortably. That’s naval architecture in a nutshell!&nbsp;

The yard also now turns its mind to motor yachts, and as the recent and lauded delivery of the 58.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">PHI</a> has demonstrated.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206279/image/large-169407980f622094f726bcfbedce1068.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206279">We took a tour of the Vollenhove facility to get a feel for what <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has on offer, with six projects currently under development, two of which are motor and one being the world’s longest sloop, there was plenty to see. One thing that unequivocally unifies <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> projects, both sail and motor, is the uniqueness of each yacht. Currently under construction is Project 404, a 59.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4373" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design (Company)">Malcolm McKeon</a> high-performance sloop with a retractable keel; Project 405, a 46.82-metre performance-cruiser sloop by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/521" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reichel / Pugh Yacht Design (Company)">Reichel / Pugh</a> that has pioneered the new “Featherlight” hull concept (more on that later); Project 406, a 52-metre sportfisher that will be the largest in the world; Project 407 is the rebuild of the 1930s motor sailor <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/260" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantide37.28m (122'4&quot;)Philip & Sons1930">Atlantide</a>; Project 408, the 65m Ketch Aquarius II, and finally Project 410 – the 85m New World Sloop from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6718" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Frers Design (Company)">Frers Design</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/174198/image/large-26290b9dcb7f698279e5f91ab1870d66.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/174198">InnovationEach of these projects offers a unique solution to the owner’s specifications and Project 405 is a case in point for how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> is primed to delve into its knowledge and create something special. The owners of 405 came to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> looking for a light, strong but fast performance-cruiser that could stand her ground in regattas, but also offers a comfortable and homely interior for her guests. Rather than compromising on outfitting materials, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/521" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reichel / Pugh Yacht Design (Company)">Reichel / Pugh</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta</a> worked together with the shipyard team to pioneer a new hull construction method, known as Featherlight – a high-grade mix between aluminium and carbon.&nbsp;Offering a reduction of up to 11 percent for the structural weight, whilst maintaining the stiffness and structural integrity of the hull, Featherlight combines the strength of carbon and the stability and low noise levels offered by aluminium. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> team is quite happy with the final product, which took sixteen iterations to perfect, and we can expect to see the Featherlight form, and versions of it, on many future sailing and motoryacht projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223059/image/large-d4a89d221fd746b61d75c72e515b9f52.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223059">While Featherlight has been one recent innovation, it doesn’t stop there. As we walked through the shipyard’s various construction and assembly halls, the interior cabinetry and furniture of various vessels were being crafted and assembled in full-size mockups to ensure the absolute accuracy of the design. Visible between the layers of wooden panelling is a central section of aluminium grating that, like the Featherlight hull, enhances the stiffness of the yacht and adds additional stability to the vessel while also lightening the interior structures.It's impossible to mention unique innovations without touching on Project 406, the custom 52-metre sportfisher. The hull of the vessel has benefitted from the testing and innovation of the Featherlight construction and while some might question how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> came to win a commission for such an unusual concept, it is that uniqueness that made <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> the perfect choice. The hull is now in an advanced stage of construction and standing above her, one really gets a sense of how she has been inspired by the sailing yachts the yard is famed for. A sleek hull and graceful sweeping profile line, the yacht’s owner's team visited Royal Huisman during the construction of PHI and it was that experience that won them over to the shipyard. Both motor yachts have low profiles (though Project 406 has five towering decks her hull form is low and slender), and are set to be truly unique within the global fleet. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231619/image/large-00c0dcf79723ddec03205f10ea43830e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231619">Walking through <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>’s Vollenhove shipyard, the facility has been carefully and efficiently organised so that the halls are arranged around the central heart of the business: the carbon and carpentry halls. The transition between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a> is so fluid in fact that you are unaware when you move from one to the other, creating a sense of absolute unity. Arranged in this way, the team has direct access to each of the projects and can move between them, collaborating with colleagues and ensuring standardisation of quality control. And at the same time a unique experience for clients, who will have the pleasure of seeing all the main aspects of their yacht under construction.Tradition and ModernityWhile <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> is still famed for the construction of classic yachts, under the hull the yachts are far from classic as they are outfitted, like their contemporary counterparts, with the latest technology. Vessels such as Aquarius II, the construction of which is just about to begin, may have classic lines and a traditional aesthetic, but she is set to be an all-powerful racing yacht with a large battery pack for peak shaving, and one that surpasses her 2018 sistership, the 56-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5848" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquarius56.0m (183'9&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2018">Aquarius</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/79808/image/large-b8be32e57f3cead21022f300d8a94fa5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/79808">Aquarius II is an interesting project, with the owners returning after only four years, not only to the shipyard but to the entire design team, and requesting the creation of a near-identical yacht, “only” 11 metres longer. With performance at the heart of the new project, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> and the team will work tirelessly to deliver a vessel that replaces the current <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5848" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquarius56.0m (183'9&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2018">Aquarius</a> and packs even more of a punch in terms of performance. It's worth noting that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5848" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquarius56.0m (183'9&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2018">Aquarius</a> won her class in the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St Barth Bucket - 2019">2019</a> and <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St Barths Bucket Regatta - 2022">2022</a> St Barths Bucket, so she’s not shy when it comes to ability. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20256/image/large-a492c3668674190d0f40ec09091492c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20256">Despite its over 135-year heritage and reputation when it comes to modern classics, the current order book demonstrates that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has more than just one string to its bow. According to the team here it is that same heritage that enables the yard to straddle the gap between traditional and modernity and to execute both sectors to the same impeccable standard. The 58-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5667" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ngoni58.15m (190'9&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2017">Ngoni</a>, otherwise known as “The Beast” is a great example of a highly distinctive superyacht that holds her own in terms of both performance and luxury. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20261/image/large-7ce0939ee84c2e7759ef932882039f0b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20261">The outfitting of Project 404 is another excellent example. Her hull is now adorned with a striking and modern colour and as we toured the yard her mainsheet arch was in the spray room, days away from assembly onboard. With huge hull windows and a massive foredeck with a gentle camber that’s home to a large hidden tender storage, the superyacht is set to be an extremely luxurious vessel. She even features a walk-in beach club, something we are familiar with from 40-metre-plus motor yachts but certainly not many sailing yachts.Project 405 is both a floating home and a formidable competitor. She features a retractable keel offering a shallow draft and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a> has pioneered a carbon trunk for the keel that reduces the amount of space needed and lightens the load. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/177436/image/large-d68f1691331710cbe2235c802c64e46a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/177436">Both 404 and 405 demonstrate how well <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> is equipped to funnel its expertise into contemporary cruising or performance projects, while also using that experience to further advance its motor yachts.Defining the futureAs one of the few shipyards in the world pioneering within the sailing yacht sphere, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> holds responsibility for the progression of yachting. When the yard first released the news in March that it had won the contract for an 85-metre sloop, it shared a tiny insight into the nature of the vessel. Not only does her name “New World” hint that the yacht will be something special, the drawing released implies that she is set to be different. Posed on a backdrop of wind turbines, the contemporary lines and name of the yacht suggest that sustainability and efficiency lie at the heart of the project. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/167125/image/large-fbd5aa512fed9d5574b5185fd7f777b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167125">While the shipyard remains tightlipped about the vessel, it has mentioned that it is working hard with the design team of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6718" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Frers Design (Company)">Mani Frers</a> and Gillian Brown of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/598" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wetzels Brown Partners (Company)">Wetzels Brown</a> to employ recycled and low-impact materials throughout the vessel. This goes to the heart of what <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman&nbsp;</a>has been working on since the delivery of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ethereal58.04m (190'5&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2009">Ethereal</a>, the world’s first hybrid-electric superyacht, in 2008. Milan-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> has come a long way since the studio was founded by three young postgraduates in 2004. (Company)">Tankoa</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207097/image/large-7c518165baffe4e2442855b521019304.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207097">A glance at the list above reveals a preponderance of projects in Turkey. When SuperYacht Times recently dropped by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> studio, we began by asking the company principals whether this has been by choice or chance. &nbsp;Antonio: A bit of both. Certainly most of our clients today are European or Turkish. When we were starting out it was probably easier to find work in Turkey and we’ve maintained those friendships and connections. Turkey is also ideally suited to our core business for yachts between 40 and 70 metres. A key aspect of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> is that most of our work is full-custom, which is another reason why our Turkish customers come to us. We also have Latin American clients and we are working to develop the North American market through our broker contacts. But the market is opening up: a few years ago we would never have knocked on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>’s door, for example, but even they are now presenting smaller concepts within our size range.You head up a young team of designers – is that a draw for younger owners?Enrico: It certainly doesn’t do any harm. The owners of the first two 43-metre Atlantique hulls in build at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a> are in their early 40s like us, for example, and we have a lot of enquiries from owners looking to acquire their first yacht of 40 or 50 metres. This means they come to the table with very different set of expectations than the older generation of owners, who probably grew up with smaller boats before investing in a superyacht.&nbsp;We’re told that younger owners are more interested in sustainable technology for their yachts. Is that your experience?Antonio: Just recently we had a discussion with an owner’s representative interested in a 75-metre project with advanced hybrid propulsion, eco-efficient glass, energy recycling, and so on. But that was just one customer. Even among younger owners, sustainability is rarely a priority.&nbsp;Enrico: Yachting is at least a decade behind the automotive industry in this respect. I started to think seriously about buying an electric car in 2020 when they were still at a premium: now you see Teslas all over the place. The technology for yachts is still developing and it’s going to take a while for both the products and perceptions to catch up.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213969/image/large-94be124531b9db0a91dffdfdf0b81467.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213969">Your most recent exterior designs have a harder, cleaner edge to them. Does&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a>&nbsp;have an in-house style?Enrico: More than a style, I think we have an in-house ethos that is reflected in our designs. The Architecture for Voyagers philosophy looks to renew the balance between structure and form, elegance and versatility. The Columbus Atlantique range, for example, expresses what we are all about: clean, contemporary lines without any fussy adornment. Sailing yachts are rarely over-designed, so we combined Italian GT sports car motifs with a classic scooped-out sailboat stern that highlights the essence of travelling by sea.Antonio: Our focus has changed since Enrico took over as head of design and we’ve seen this in the projects we have in build or in development with four times the number of exterior designs we had ten years ago. The way we present projects to shipyards and brokers has also changed. We used to go with a portfolio of what we had already done, take notes on what they were looking for, and go away and come up with a design. Most of our proposals today have already been developed independently in-house. This was the case for the Atlantique range, but also the Neptune and Superleggera concepts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/202265/image/large-c3e133582ee8776af0ff79bcc50f5f26.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/202265">Is there a yacht project that you would like to design given the opportunity?Enrico: There are a couple of projects we worked on during lockdown when we had more time to spread our wings that I’d like to develop further, also because they are smaller than what we usually do. But I’m also very interested in the evolution of &nbsp;relationship between spaces in yacht design. We’re starting to see yachts of 55 metres or more that are under 500 GT, and you can only do that by having more open or semi-open spaces. This in turn influences the exterior proportions and the relationship between full and empty volumes.&nbsp;Antonio: I think this is one of the most exciting design trends we’re seeing at the moment. The most recent example is 58.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a>, the longest yacht under 500 GT, designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D Rover</a> and built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>. These low-rise superstructures and long, slender hulls are more challenging to design and engineer, but we’re seeing more and more demand for this kind of yacht. We’ve started experimenting with designs of our own and the 50-metre explorer concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Tankoa</a>, for example, is available in two different versions that prioritise interior volume or hull length.

Phi’s main deck aft swimming pool is just under 7-metres in length and can be filled with fresh or sea water. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Powered by Mercury stern drives for a top speed of nearly 50 knots, the elegant cedar and mahogany runabout will have bespoke aviation-grade dashboard gauges inspired by 1950s and ’60s sports cars and a cathedral-style skylight in the foredeck illuminating &nbsp; &nbsp; the covered seating below. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179288/image/large-05cf532524e5b504dbb7fc4eb504f44e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179288">The gentleman’s tender will be named 'Spirit of Phi' and, true to her name, the design has been developed to adhere to the rule of &nbsp;phi, even down to the fabric patterns. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit Yachts Ltd (Company)">Spirit Yachts</a> is also developing an eight-metre sailing dinghy for the owner with a collapsible mast and keel that can be easily handled by one person.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179287/image/large-9f7ddbd6c5259c346464d5c39c3e20ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179287">The shadow vessel will further carry a customised Axopar 37 Sun-Top sports tender. Justin Ratcliffe visits the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> headquarters in Vollenhove to take an exclusive look at project Phi, its second motor yacht and one of next year’s most eagerly awaited superyacht deliveries.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179291/image/large-df64610983fa7f540e8e83e9a45d9d75.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179291">“Phi&nbsp;is not just a name on the back of a boat, it’s a fundamental part of the whole design concept,” says Captain Guy Booth, owner’s representative on the 58.5-metre custom project in build at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman's&nbsp;</a>headquarters in Vollenhove. “The boss made it very clear that he wanted a name and overall concept that reflected the fundamental laws of nature, mathematics and science.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179286/image/large-c2ec6806efb859a98679d03a1908b0b6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179286">The Greek letter known as phi (ϕ) is used to describe the golden ratio in nature, art and architecture, magnetic flux in physics, the Fibonacci sequence in mathematics, flight dynamics, probability theory and even the stock market. In other words, it is at the heart of just about everything in the world as we know it.&nbsp;The custom yacht, with exterior styling by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover</a> and interior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4998" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lawson Robb (Company)">Lawson Robb</a>, has been a long time in the making. The owner, an experienced yachtsman, spent several years carefully studying neighbouring vessels wherever his current yacht happened to be anchored.“He would pass comment and ask questions, which led to long conversations and preferences began to emerge,” says Capt. Booth. “He likes military looks, but not overtly so, a sense of movement even when sitting still, and feminine lines, but in a dangerous way like a hissing cobra or a lioness.”&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/101422/image/large-3455ab0542c1b229caf66cfbe411efdf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101422">The owner’s team shared their notes with several leading yacht designers, who all came to the table with ready-made proposals. All except <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover.&nbsp;</a>“How can I design you a custom yacht without knowing anything about you?” the Dutch designer asked. The owner was impressed by his honest but humble approach and they hit it off immediately. Months passed and Rover presented his concept for a sub-500GT, all-aluminium yacht to the owner during the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show. It was the start of project Phi.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179261/image/large-a782eaababff5705dc7b290e9884c734.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179261">Rover had already consulted with naval architect Perry van Oossanen and his design is based on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">van Oossanen’s</a> Fast Displacement XL hull form, which instead of prioritising volume aims to optimise hull length and performance within a given gross tonnage. The next step was to find a shipyard to build the yacht. After talking with top yards in Europe and beyond, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman&nbsp;</a>emerged as the ideal marriage for several reasons.“We had some disappointing meetings with yards who wanted to push their own platforms, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman&nbsp;</a>is accustomed to building aluminium sailing yachts that are completely different from one another,” says Capt. Booth. “They were also keen to build another motor yacht and most of the people who work there are passionate about sailing. When the boss visited the shipyard he knew they could build his dream boat.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/3557/image/large-1ba7dd89b128bf7603001dd496937775.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/3557">All the same, taking on project Phi was a calculated risk for Royal Huisman. Their first motor yacht project, 36-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arcadia35.8m (117'5&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2006">Arcadia</a> in 2006, was conventional in comparison with&nbsp;Phi, but the yard doesn’t shy away from challenges, its motto being: ‘If you can dream it, we can build it’. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179292/image/large-c2f50e7c2e61bb369e1cdc657b0e0980.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179292">“A motor yacht is generally simpler to build than a sailing yacht because it doesn’t have the heeling angles or sail handling systems and the hull structure doesn’t have to withstand the same loads,” says Jeroen Heemstra, one of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman’s</a> project engineers. “On the other hand, we are less accustomed to working with the complex shapes of the superstructure, stabiliser systems and features like the 16-tonne capacity swimming pool.”There is not a single straight line among the compound curves that make up the exterior styling of Phi. The hull sheer was inspired by the hood of an angry cobra and when combined with the ‘eyes’ of the forward fairleads and sea-blue <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1485" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Awlgrip (Company)">Awlgrip</a> paintwork with a hint of battleship grey, the yacht has a slightly menacing appearance. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179285/image/large-9c381deb9671ede4b1c6a463d6203f8d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179285">A defining feature of the exterior design is the glass-fronted ‘nooks’ in the bulwarks on the bridge deck and owner’s deck that can be used as recliners. More challenging for the yard was convincing the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) that the bulwark extensions of self-supporting glass were perfectly safe. Built into the metalwork and without a stanchion in sight, the stainless steel and teak caprails appear to be floating in mid-air.Another challenge was keeping the gross tonnage below the 500GT threshold and some ingenious solutions have been integrated into the design to exclude certain spaces from the volume calculations. Large fashion plates, for example, can add gross tonnage by partially enclosing the aft deck, so Phi has stylised fashion plates with ‘fingers’ of polished stainless steel inspired by T-1000, the shape-shifting android made of liquid metal in the Terminator franchise. In addition, the glass windbreaks between the fashion plates and the main salon reach only part way to the deckhead to avoid an enclosed space. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/111234/image/large-207f8bf485de0395681a00f217997799.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/111234">Phi’s swimming pool on the main deck aft is just under seven metres in length, can be filled with fresh or sea water and has a counter-current jet for swimming. A patented system designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover&nbsp;</a>allows the pool’s floor (clad in Esthec to create a design feature) to be raised on a chain drive to cover the pool. The water level is then topped up to cancel any surface effect while under way and an inflatable seal prevents leakage (there is also a dump tank if required). Heat recovered from the generator exhaust and chiller compressors can be used to heat the pool and onboard fresh water.Noticeable by their absence are the engine room ventilation shafts, which usually create a bottleneck at the entrance to the main salon. Phi’s&nbsp;engine room is quite far aft of the deck and the baffle-protected air intakes emerge outboard in the hull below the fashion plates. The surprisingly small ducting is the result of studying exactly how much air is required for the engine combustion.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179274/image/large-056766166cc1aec068f5a97c7c7b7ad4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179274">“We discovered that the engines need just 30 percent of the air typically shovelled into the engine room,” says Capt. Booth. “The rest is used for cooling and exits the room minutes later a few degrees warmer. Our engine room has its own AC system and reducing the amount of air passing through it meant we could reduce the size of the ducts and ventilation fans.”Stabilisation at anchor and under way is provided by two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5108" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="VEEM Ltd. (Company)">VEEM</a> gyros in the engine room. Numerous options were studied by<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">&nbsp;van Oossanen,</a> including two pairs of fins and multiple smaller gyros. There are pros and cons associated with gyro stabilisers, but Capt. Booth was already familiar with them from previous yachts and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5108" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="VEEM Ltd. (Company)">VEEM</a> configuration provides the highest performance given the expected operational profile of the yacht.&nbsp;&nbsp;Another first is the exterior accent lighting powered by lasers. Such lighting usually relies on LEDs, but when they fail they leave unsightly gaps. Phi’s&nbsp;system comprises over 1,500 metres of optical fibres that are evenly illuminated by lasers. The only components that can fail are the lasers, which are housed inside the yacht and can be easily replaced.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179290/image/large-f5d0f0e98a57df7031f9fde1207bcb27.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179290">Multi-purpose design was of primary importance for the owner and this is reflected in the layout and custom furniture. “The owner questioned the need for multiple dining tables, for example,” says Booth. “When one is being used, what are others doing? The answer is nothing: they’re huge pieces of stationary furniture.”On&nbsp;Phi there is just one circular dining table on the main deck positioned partly outside the salon and half enclosed by six sliding panels of curved glass made by Rondal, Huisman’s sister company. When the watertight panes are automatically stacked out of sight in side-compartments (individual panes can also be opened depending on the wind direction), most of the dining table sits outside on the covered aft deck. Similar glass doors in the forward-facing master stateroom on the owner’s deck provide direct access to a private foredeck veranda. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Details of the interior by UK-based<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4998" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lawson Robb (Company)">&nbsp;Lawson Robb&nbsp;</a>have not been released, but the outfitters claim it is one of the most complex they have ever built and Capt. Booth insists it will be “very special indeed”. However, we can reveal that a highlight is a 300-bottle wine cellar under the corridor linking the five guest suites on the lower deck. The corridor floor is one-way glass while the base of the wine cellar is of mirrored glass, so the effect looking down will be of an endless array of wine bottles. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/111245/image/large-5274eed29409b07e4258dde77c616ca1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/111245">Phi got under way at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> while 81-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6140" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sea Eagle II81.0m (265'9&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2020">Sea Eagle II</a> was still in build. The three-masted schooner benefitted from concurrent design and stage gating methodologies designed to ensure the design and construction advanced smoothly, on budget and on schedule. The same processes have been applied to Phi and despite the logistical difficulties caused by the Covid pandemic, the motor yacht is slightly ahead of schedule. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/168415/image/large-1cde6fae0ea037eab25cf136032ad529.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/168415">The ‘Keep It Simple’ school of thought governed the whole product development process. The entertainment system, for example, relies on equipment that can be easily replaced and a simple, user-friendly iPad interface.“In the owner’s experience, entertainment systems on yachts are too complicated,” Capt. Booth explains. “For him it’s not a question of cost, but reliability, value for money and ease of use. We have off-the-shelf components that we can buy anywhere without having to call in a specialist technician, but the quality of experience for the user is exactly the same.” &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179275/image/large-f2e6fe95b5fd4a3f1558f8dbdd14284d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179275"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> uses the tagline ‘The Spirit of Individuality’ to describe its approach to yacht building. Rover</a> explains: “Although she’s basically a workhorse with lots of storage for tenders and ’toys and a big 11.5-metre reaching 15,500kg capacity crane, the exterior lines and details have been styled to resemble the mothership. With a number of hot projects breathing new life into the Turkish yard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alia Yachts (Company)">Alia Yachts</a>, 2019 has without a doubt been an exciting year. Starting with the expansion of its facility in Antalya, the newly enlarged space now covers over 20,000 square-metres and boasts two new construction sheds measuring 90 metres in length and over 22 metres in height. Royal Huisman has announced the signing of a new 55-metre superyacht today named Project Phi. The project is a result of a close collaboration between the Dutch design firm Cor D. Rover for her exterior, London-based interior designers Lawson Robb, and the experts at Van Oossanen Naval Architects. The owner’s current captain, Yacht Consult and Arcon Yachts were also instrumental in the development of Project Phi.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/35194/image/large-af7327c37d0a961d312e3bace7025083.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35194">Relating to ”Sectio divina” or the Golden Ratio, Phi is the formula that governs continuation of dimensions and shapes in natural proportions throughout the design.
