	Italian design studio Luxury Projects is headed by an all round captivating woman. Laura Pomponi, founder and CEO of the Ancona based company, is about as Italian as you can imagine, with a bright, intelligent, good humoured personality and a tangible zest for life that is clearly reflected in the number of well-executed projects Pomponi and her team have successfully completed over the past eight years in business.

	Pomponi grew up in Rome, where the qualities that attract people to her now forced her parents to send her to a monastery as a child in the summer afternoons to learn the art of embroidery and, well, keep her out of trouble. She laughingly tells us, “My parents had to keep me busy so I would behave myself! I was at the monastery every day in the summers to learn the art of complicated embroidery. When I was a teenager the tradition continued, and they sent me off to England to study English in these long summers to stop me from being naughty!”

	A funny anecdote now, Pomponi’s feistiness as a child actually proved to be the key to learning skills that would ultimately be indispensable in later life. The benefits of learning English when involved in an abundance of travel and international business doesn’t need explaining, but the ability to really understand a behind-the-scenes skill of an element of interior design piqued an interest in colour, shapes, art and design that was already simmering beneath the surface for Pomponi.

	Regardless of an artistic flair, Pomponi decided to study technical engineering, something in which she successfully continued in immediately after graduation working for the large Italian tech company, Telecom Italia Mobiles. Explaining the decision to take a decidedly more technical vocation, Pomponi says, “I grew up surrounded by fashion designers - including my grandmother. But I chose to study engineering because I am really passionate about maths and complicated equations. What I actually like about the construction of a yacht is the intricacy of the process. It’s like a DNA spiral, and I love solving these complex issues.”

	Travelling the world with the aforementioned position, Italy eventually beckoned Pomponi back to her shores, where Pomponi’s life would take a different direction with a position at the CRN shipyard. Explaining this drastic transition, she explains “I eventually decided to go back to Ancona. I was missing the sea and I was missing my family! CRN were enlarging their shipyard at that time, and knowing nothing about yachting aside from loving to be on the sea and loving sailing, they asked me if I was ready to start on production and go from there. I accepted the challenge and started with them as a Project Manager in 2002.”

	It was several years later on a trip to Doha when she decided to put the entrepreneurial ambitions she had had since childhood into action - though it was a chance meeting with a Sheikh on this particular trip that propelled these ambitions into reality. Elaborating on the move from Project Manager at CRN to owner of her own design studio, Pomponi says, “I was in Doha with a friend who designs jewels. We were at a gala, and suddenly I was sitting next to a man who was a Sheik. We got talking and he asked me if I was an interior designer. I looked at him and said, ‘Sheik. I’m not but… I can do it.’ From then on we started to work together. He trusted me, and we started on some of his reception areas at his home. Little by little people in yachting started to call me for project management roles within superyacht interiors. An owner then rang me and asked me to do it all - that was the refit of the Mangusta 40 metre, Shane (ex. Ability) in 2008. The rest is history!” 

	Today, Luxury Projects is made up of a strong team of 10, all Italian, and all from various backgrounds and disciplines. Although the residential side of design is still something that is very present within the business, Pomponi’s heart really lies in superyacht design, something reflected in the fact that the business in split 70-30 between the two sectors. The passion for superyachts, Pomponi tells us, is connected with the challenge of the build, “The clients on both sides are very demanding, but the spaces on board yachts are very different to residential. The construction of a yacht does not allow for any mistakes, and every element is very bespoke.”

	Just some of the most exciting projects the Luxury Projects studio has undertaken since their establishment in 2008 include the interior design on board the 43 metre Talal, the 34 metre Koji, the 39 metre Lady Azul, the 66 metre Route 66, the 43 metre Emotion, the 27 metre Rosey (ex. Yolo) and the interior refit on board the 59 metre Feadship superyacht Le Pharaon - no small feat for what is still a relatively new studio. So what makes Luxury Projects different and keeps clients continuously knocking on their door?

	One explanation could be found in the fact that Pomponi and her team have a fresh approach to design, with a strong focus on innovation - particularly when it comes to lighting. This attracts a diverse set of clients to the table, Pomponi says. “My clients are almost all in their 40s, so my age. They have a background in innovation and technology. There are certain clients that use the yacht as a status symbol, but from the majority of owners that I deal with, they really want to enjoy the yacht.”

	With this desire to really enjoy what a superyacht has to offer comes a distinct change within interior design. No longer is extravagant luxury the order of the day, but functionality - something seen within the - still rather secretive - new superyacht concepts (both of 70+ metres) Luxury Projects has undertaken with the team at Amels. Commenting on the projects, Pomponi elaborates, “The idea is to present these concepts to the new generation of yacht owners. The interiors are cosy, it’s not about luxury… these designs are for a client who really wants to use the yacht, and we’ve included state-of-the-art lighting and entertainment technology. The selection of materials we have used is designed for a real indoor-outdoors connection - for example, if they are scuba diving, they can come into the main saloon with a wetsuit - we’ve used outdoor fabric on the sofas.”

	Aside from the exciting concepts presented in Monaco with Amels, current projects underway at the studio include the refit on board the 90 metre Nero, as well as a 42 metre new build motor yacht and the extensive refit of the 32 metre Saint Raphael, which is being lengthened to 42 metres. In regards to the latter two projects, Luxury Projects are also undertaking the exterior design. Although interiors are really the heart and soul of the company, this is something in which has been made possible by Pomponi’s diverse and skillful team.

	The team behind the studio is something Pomponi speaks proudly of. Though she is most definitely the boss, the way Luxury Projects is ran is not a dictatorship, or even a democracy, it’s a family, and Pomponi warmly told us of travelling the world with the close team, cooking up Italian feasts and enjoying each other’s company on the journey of the business. Clients are also commonly invited to join the Luxury Projects family in an informal but richly productive environment. Getting to know your client's personality and tastes are, after all, all part and parcel of delivering their dream superyacht design.

	In terms of the future, Pomponi has dreams to grow the company bigger in order to better facilitate markets such as the US, but by no means desires to be the biggest studio in the world. She wants to maintain the great team she has and, of course, maintain control over the projects they undertake. With the aforementioned Amels concepts well received in Monaco, it seems as though the decision to go bigger or not will most definitely rest in Pomponi’s hands sooner rather than later.

The 2012-built 34 metre performance yacht named Koji has been announced sold this week, with Edmiston’s Alex Koersvelt having represented the buyer and Jamie Small at Burgess acting on behalf of the seller. Koji was listed for sale at asking price of €5,250,000.

As hull number 18 in a line of sports yachts delivered by the Italian shipyard, Koji is a bold and stylish superyacht, combining her powerful performance capabilities with great style and an inviting atmosphere on board.

SuperYacht Times recently had the pleasure of interviewing Andrea Carlevaris, founder of the international company Andrea Carlevaris &amp; Partners (ACP) with offices in Monaco and Italy.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150103/image/large-8747828dc48ed00c854d9cdded78bfbe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150103">ACP specializes in naval engineering, project management, and surveying. The company is characterized by its technical expertise combined with the use of state of the art diagnostic tools, as well as an uncompromised sense of ethics. The ACP team of project managers and surveyors is among the most proficient in the yachting industry today. Thanks to clear vision, hard work, and a true passion for yachting, the company has experienced significant growth in the past few years.Andrea Carlevaris yearned to be at sea from an early age. He began his career as an engineer officer on board cruise ships where he earned his Unlimited Chief Engineer License.From 1994 until 2005 he worked on board some of the most prestigious superyachts, both sailing and motor.Driven by his passion for sailing, Andrea Carlevaris decided to leave the cruise ship industry for a more intimate encounter with the sea. In 1994 he accepted the position of engineer on the 90’ sailboat Whitefin.Clearly overqualified for the job, Andrea joined the yacht with the stipulation he would be allowed to work on deck and have the opportunity to steer the yacht. After all, it was this desire that had initially prompted him to give up working on the large cruise ships.What factors have most influenced Andrea’s business development?According to Andrea, “I see my current business endeavors as a natural result of the accumulated technical expertise I acquired while working in the military, commercial, and yachting industry. This is of course combined with the fact that I saw a market in need of greater technical expertise and engineering knowledge and I set out to fill that void.”Today, ACP offers a broad range of services from pre-purchase surveys to complete project management of New Builds and Refits. As a result, Andrea has established his reputation in the industry by consistently demanding the highest quality for his clients. He comments: “If you are looking for someone who you can completely trust to look after your investment, you have come to the right place.When we are supervising a new build, the process begins in one of two ways: either revising an existing build specification provided by the shipyard, or, if needed, drawing one up from scratch. Once the project has been initiated, the next step in the process is to support the client through the contract signature phase and the build process where we project manage as well as survey the quality of the construction. Throughout the entire process we ensure that the work quality remains uncompromised and the project proceeds as planned.In addition to these services, we are also able to assist crew with gearing up and taking control of the yacht. As we have ourselves experienced working on yachts at sea, we know the needs of the captain and his crew.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150104/image/large-06df4b759e5164b7f3375f7397ecdc2d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150104">What about pre-purchase surveys and other specialty technical services?When it comes to pre-owned yachts, it is a matter of recognizing the risks or short comings if any should exist. Otherwise, we would reassure the buyer that the yacht is in a good state – if in fact this is the case. This is what we achieve with our Pre- Purchase Surveys. At times, our expertise is called upon to settle claims or to solve technical situations where improvements or repairs are needed. We perform the tasks with the utmost care and our in-house naval architects are definitely an asset.This is all well and good but aside from being experienced and giving valuable advice are you actually an accredited Marine Surveyor?All our surveyors at ACP are accredited. I am a Full Member of the International Institute of Marine Surveying and my colleagues are registered surveyors and registered naval architects in Italy. I believe that in order to obtain proper advice on technical matters only certified people should be involved. Our clients can also rely on the fact that we have a fully-certified in-house FROSIO paint inspector. As training and experience are prerequisites for becoming a FROSIO surveyor, ACP can be trusted as being amongst the best in the industry when it comes to paint matters.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150105/image/large-ba9d0e9238da12e99c30505963b828e7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150105">We were told that you have also successfully supervised refits.Yes this is indeed true, and it is becoming so more and more often. In fact, after the purchase is finalized, a number of our clients entrust us with improving the newly acquired yacht with a well-planned refit. After the survey has been completed we are in the best position to advise which work should have priority and which of the tasks can wait for a more suitable time.Helping with shipyard cost quotes and shortlisting the best shipyards for the purposes of the refit is also a great benefit for the Owners and Captains.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150106/image/large-30d68da62e554b04df5b389492c66ead.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150106">When projects such as refits or new builds have been successfully concluded, ACP can continue to support the yacht by being its back up technical office. This valuable service enables Captains and Engineers to more efficiently run the yacht, prepare for Flag State, or other statutory audits and inspections.The quality of work and the increased esteem for ACP is reflected by the success of their recent projects, consisting of 6 refits just this winter and 3 new builds on the go, the last one having just been delivered last month.Carlevaris discussed the projects with SuperYacht Times, commenting: We just delivered the latest AB116 sold by Verpeka Dolling where we did the specifications review and technical supervision. The yacht reached an outstanding speed of 53 knots and it took the record time of 6 months from the stage of bare hull and superstructure to the finished yacht.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150107/image/large-0e943ead31753ea2983bcfde183ccdd4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150107">We also did an important refit on the Nauchmachos 82 - M/Y Akula (Formerly Bodry I) where the whole engine room was revised and some of the interiors were upgraded as well as a zero speed stabilization system retrofitted.We just delivered a winter Refit/Class 5-year renewal Mangusta 130 M/Y Mao and are currently overseeing a refit of a Mangusta 105;The 50 mt M/Y Nafisa and the 36mt Leopard M/Y KOJI are repeated customers for the winter season this year as well.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150108/image/large-76a32e5054b9eda1271ef79fd0b06be1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150108">With regards to new builds we are about to deliver a Sanlorenzo 92 and we are building a Sanlorenzo 110 and a Sanlorenzo 46mt both for delivery in 2015. We also did about 20 pre-purchase surveys ranging from 110’ to 80 metre since the beginning of the year.”We would also like to mention that we are still proudly involved with Project ADORA, the 62-metre Benetti whose construction was supervised by ACP and delivered in 2010. On board Adora there are improvements carried out on a yearly basis requested by very sophisticated Owners. After 7 years this demonstrates their interest in continuity and appreciation for quality of service. Her Owner and captain are our best testimonials!”When it comes to this yachting industry, Andrea Carlevaris has tried his hand at almost everything from working on yachts, surveying yachts, building yachts, and project management. So is there anything left on his wish list for the future?He tells us: “Probably some extreme project which would combine our experience with military building and commercial sailing on luxury cruise ships. The aft deck, which is, like most of Koji's designs, based on a colour scheme of dark grey and red, is one of two exterior areas that are perfect for enjoying the excitement of Koji's strength when sailing at full speed.
