World’s former largest yacht – the 147-metre Prince Abulaziz

When the 147-metre Prince Abdulaziz was launched in Denmark in 1984, she became known as the largest yacht in the world and remained at the top of the 100-largest yachts list until the arrival of the 162-metre M/Y Dubai in 2006. Since that date, a total number of six other yachts have been launched that measures over 147 metres. Prince Abdulaziz belongs to the Saudi Royal Family and can often be seen around the Balearic Islands and South of France regions. Her home port is registered as Jeddah.

For many years, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/207">Prince Abdulaziz</a> (147 metre) ranked as the largest yacht in the world. Today, four yachts are larger; <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/206">Dubai</a> (162 metre), the Blohm &amp; Voss <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12">Eclipse</a> (162,5 metre), <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9">Al Said</a> (155 metre), built by Lürssen and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3962">Topaz</a> (147 metre), also built by Lürssen, pushing Prince Abdulaziz to the fouth place. Prince Abdulaziz is owned by the Saudi royal family, and was build in Denmark in 1984. The Palumbo Group acquired the Malta Superyacht Facilities in March 2011. The yard is currently fully in operation, carrying out over 30 superyacht projects in only a few weeks. The already extensive portfolio shows well-known names such as Atlantis II, Pelorus, Phocea, Prince Abdulaziz, Senses and Slipstream. With expert knowledge in shipyard and marine industry since 1967, combined with the already highly skilled engineers and workforce of the Malta Shipyard, Palumbo Malta Superyacht refit centre can accommodate all kinds of requirements. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136369/image/large-8852461b713e77396c7b661e524f8f13.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136369">The Super Yacht Facility covers an area of 45,000 m2, including two dry-docks(170m x 25m), of which one is equipped with a retractable shed. Docks and quays are served with rail mounted cranes with a maximum lifting capacity of 50 tons. By September 2011, Palumbo Malta Superyachts will offer a range of services, including a showroom displaying several yachting products, and also its refit and repair services, which allow for engine overhaul, furnishing and woodwork tapestry for an extensive type of yachts, also accounting for the fibreglass smaller boats. In fact, the yard is planning to have a separate open air area for smaller yachts, ranging between 18m to 48m with a maximum 300 DWT. This area will have a slipway and will be equipped with a syncrolift and a Self Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) able to transport yachts up to 300DWT. Moreover, a renovated building close to the yard will be utilized as an ideal protective shed for painting works, storage for the winter season, and other possible uses required. Moreover, new exciting developments are at the stage of design, where an old Smithery building will be renovated into an complex for Captains and crew, including duplex apartments with magnificent harbor views, fully equipped gymnasium, self service kitchenette and dining area, bar, Captains office including wifi connections, and a relaxing and socializing area including lounge area, TV room and two open air large terraces. Palumbo Malta running at full speed 

The International Superyacht Society (ISS) has announced it's collaboration with Wilfred Sultana &amp; Associates in presenting the Superyacht Industry Seminar, The Way Forward, being conducted in Malta, Friday 29 April 2011. Similar to the seminar presented in 2009, foreign and local speakers will again take the podium. While two years ago the theme was ‘The Superyacht Industry’, this year the forum focuses more on the Malta yachting scenario while underlining the demanding requisites of superyachts. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/134335/image/large-5e5d848491ac3d184747975811a8d089.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/134335">The seminar, like the previous one, is being organised by Wilfred Sultana &amp; Associates publishers of ‘Yachting in Malta’, the Directory to Malta’s yachting services and facilities. A few weeks ago the 9th Edition of the directory, meant for distribution throughout 2011 and 2012, was launched 35 years after the publication of the first edition in 1976. 35 Years of Service 1976-2011, the theme opted for the directory’s 9th edition, is also a cornerstone of this year’s seminar. The Malta event will once again have the support and collaboration of Transport Malta and the International Superyacht Society whose involvement both provides member speakers and gives the local seminar more global exposure through its marketing network. The International Superyacht Society is recognised as the sole organization serving and representing the large yacht industry worldwide. Society members are individuals and companies who have been recognized for their leadership and dedication in raising the standards of design construction, maintenance, repair and operation of large yachts. It is envisaged that one of the foreign speaker nominated by the International Superyacht Society this year will be a Captain of a superyacht whose presentation will reflect the experience, outlook and ‘destination’ gauge of superyachts captains who visit Malta. Another ISS speaker will discuss fundamentals regarding the superyacht marketplace. ISS and Wilfred Sultana & Associates present Yachting in Malta seminar

Today, two yachts are larger; <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/206">Dubai</a> (162m) and the recently launched <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9">Al Said</a> (155m), built by Lürssen. In 2010, German builder Blohm &amp; Voss will launch the highly secretive project <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12">Eclipse</a> (162m), pushing Prince Abdulaziz off the third place. Al Yamamah, the 82 meter superyacht owned by the Saudi Royal Family, arrived in St Jean Cap Ferrat today. It’s one of her first appearances outside Greek and Arabian waters since her launch. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123189/image/large-6a21053fd8d7783dd437f99037233075.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123189"><a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1682">Al Yamamah</a> was originally build as Qadissiyat Saddam for the Iraqi government, but due to the political situation the yacht was never delivered to Iraq, but instead went to Saudi Arabia. She was built in 1981 in Denmark at the Helsingor Vaerft, who also build the 147 meter <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/207">Prince Abdulaziz</a>. Superyacht special: 82 meter Al Yamamah arrives in the South of France

She anchored in front of the Adriatic Shipyard in Bijela where she will undergo maintenance and repair work during the winter months. The scope of the work and the timeframe are still unknown, but it’s expected to only take a few months. The 147m (482.28ft) <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/207">Prince Abdulaziz</a> was built in Denmark by Helsingor Vaerft in 1984. And the interior was finished in the United Kingdom at the Southampton Docks to a design of David Hicks. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/207">Prince Abdulaziz</a> was built for the late King Fahd, but after his dead King Abdulah took over the yacht. After having spend many years in Saudi Arabia her new owner took her for the first time since many years to the Mediterranean.
