More important, it is the first time <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/66" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Dragon51.7m (169'7&quot;)Alloy Yachts2008">Red Dragon</a> has ever raced period, so the yacht’s owner is delighted. “The owner loves to drive, so he drove the whole time and did a great job,” said King.The 44-metre schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5645" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Columbia43.03m (141'2&quot;)Eastern Shipbuilding Group2014">Columbia</a>, one of the most elegant yachts in the L'Esprit 2 fleet, recorded a 43.5 degree of heel on its winning sprint. “We were taking a lot of water over the deck but we were under control,” said guest crew Jakob Havrlant, who counts this as his first Bucket but says it won’t be his last. “Some of the sloops were catching us upwind, but we were a reaching machine on the other legs. Superyachts in Porto Cervo

Kealoha, the Claasen Jachtbouw/Hoek 27.5m sloop and Nirvana, the Vitters/Dubois/GCA 53.5m ketch (and Monaco Yacht Show winner of the “Prix du Design”), both won their categories at the International Superyacht Awards during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. MCM were Construction Managers for Kealoha and partially for Nirvana, as well as two other nominees, Red Dragon (52m Dubois) and Angel (25.4m Langan). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126054/image/large-bf24f0712de3401420b817af37701c37.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126054">Nigel Ingram who oversaw both projects in The Netherlands says “It is quite a challenge to produce a relatively small volume, classically styled yacht such as Kealoha, including all of the interior and systems features that are expected of today’s Superyachts while maintaining truly sparkling performance under sail. Congratulations to the Hoek/Claasen team for achieving this. The technical set up of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/22">Nirvana</a> was one of our most challenging projects to date with many new extraordinary features incorporated in this high volume, shallow draft hull form. With over 60 yachts behind them in 20 years in business, the majority sailing yachts, Nigel Ingram and Peter Wilson, MCM’s founding directors are recognised in the industry by owners, designers, builders and captains as the ‘heavyweights’ who really know the business inside-out and add value to new build projects and ongoing operations management. Two MCM new-build projects, motor and sail, will launch in 2009 and a further four in 2010.

MCM Yachts win two superyacht awards

Alloy Yachts has launched its latest superyacht, the 52m (170ft) flybridge ketch, Mondango, built for an international businessman and his wife. Mondango is a Dubois Naval Architects design. The hull, which is finished in Majestic Blue, is similar to the recent Red Dragon, but the ketch configuration makes the yacht distinctive. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125492/image/large-4294c63e176c57a075aa56e9751b0728.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125492">The superstructure, in Matterhorn White, extends further aft, creating a large cockpit area. The side windows and the curved rear window of the cockpit open and close at the touch of a button allowing the cockpit to be climate controlled, or open to the sea breeze. The interior design by Reymond Langton features contemporary styling utilizing oak and macassar ebony timbers. Mondango is the fifth yacht over 50m built by Alloy Yachts. She has a beam of 10.2m (33.5ft), draws 4.9m (16.1ft) and a displacement of 350 tonnes. She is built to Lloyds Classification and the Large Commercial Yacht Code LY2. Mondango was launched in the traditional way with champagne across the bow and then made its way under the control of two tugs from the yard to the Viaduct Basin in Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. In the following weeks, the carbon fibre Southern Spars masts were stepped and engine and sailing trials were undertaken. Sails are by North Sails and are handled by 18 captive and eight vertical winches, all of which were designed and built by Alloy Yachts. The triple headsails furl on Reckmann furlers. The main engine is a 3412D 1200hp caterpillar and she is fitted with two 90kw Northern Lights generators.

Alloy Yachts launches 52m ketch Mondango

After leaving Auckland to a wonderful send-off from all the other yachts in the Viaduct Basin loudly sounding their horns, we headed north. The first 36 hours were wet and cold motoring into head seas, which the Dragon handled admirably. After that, apart from one windy night, it was light winds all the way to Bali, a trip which took just under 14 days – and we still had 6000 litres of fuel left. This was where we said goodbye to Alloy Yachts’ Vajira Samarasekara (Sam) and Chris Saville, who returned to Auckland. (It is standard practice for Alloy to send support staff on the maiden voyage. In this case ‘Sam’ – electrical – and Chris – engineering – made the trip.) <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125203/image/large-fbdffd6cf1a92efe0f620d39692a2d74.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125203">After leaving Bali, we headed to the Seychelles, but decided enroute that we could not go past the Chagos Archipelago without a quick stop at the atoll of Peros Banhos, which was amazing. It is an uninhabited atoll with many little islands which are patrolled by the British government. After having our paperwork and permit checked by the authorities on the fishery protection vessel, we watched them head over the horizon – and then went for an amazing dive. After Chagos it was on to the Seychelles where we did a photo shoot and an 11 day trip with the boss, which they thoroughly enjoyed. After quickly getting the Dragon ready for sea again, we took on board our security personnel and headed towards the Red Sea. Whilst transiting through the Gulf of Aden, we had three people on watch at all times as during the previous few weeks the Somalian pirates had been very active. Whilst in a position of approxi-mately 13 degrees North and 53 degrees East, we saw a large dhow change course at eight miles from us and head towards us. At four miles, they stopped and launched six fast boats with about three people in each towards us. This certainly got the heart racing and adrenalin pumping. On arrival, they were surprised to find eight people in flak jackets with guns awaiting their arrival and decided that they would do better to wait for an easier, less prepared target. Six hours later a merchant vessel came under fire in the same location and 24 hours after that three ships were also hijacked in the same area and are at the time of writing all off the Somalian coasts awaiting ransom negotiations. We then had a brief stop in Rhodes before heading to Istanbul in Turkey for a trip with the boss. At present we are cruising the Greek islands with the boss on board and everywhere that we stop there are lots of admiring faces and questions. Red Dragon <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/66">Red Dragon</a> is a 52m flybridge sloop designed by Dubois Naval Architects and delivered in February. Matt Bridge joins Doyle Sails NZ as Superyacht Sail Coordinator

Doyle NZ has charged into 2008 with the largest sail project to come from the New Zealand manufacturing facility of Stratis Sail Cloth. The sails were hoisted last week on the latest superyacht to come to fruition from the Dubois drawing board, Red Dragon. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123903/image/large-cdf1cda67b12b41fd01699ea4e47418f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123903">© Mike HunterThis super sloop, built by Alloy Yachts, specified and received perfectly fitting and uniquely monogrammed sails that performed flawlessly during the tests out on the Hauraki Gulf in Auckland. These sails mark a milestone for "Stratis" – being by far the largest membrane sails produced to date at the Stratis Sail Loft. By all accounts these sails were probably the largest custom-inlaid fibre sails produced by a sail loft anywhere in the world. To put things in perspective - the total Stratis Membrane Cloth manufactured on board this boat accounts for over 27,000 sq ft of sail area, an impressive feat by any sailmakers standards - the Reacher alone measures-in at just over 8500 sq ft. Stratis Membrane Sails from Doyle NZ are being selected with greater frequency by performance driven owners, project managers and yacht captains. The reason for the break from tradition to Stratis Membrane is due to the weight savings, performance increases and benefits of a sail that can be specifically engineered to address the exact load path on each corner of the sail. Every specific fibre sandwiched between the Polyester or Mylar laminates is engineered from Stratis propriety software and then mapped to a fully automated manufacturing process. Fibres such as Vectran, Carbon Fibre and Kevlar are selected dependant on the sail designer’s specifications and best application for the sail. Since Doyle NZ embarked on the Stratis Membrane development project over 5 years ago, they have now manufactured over 2000 racing and cruising sails for clients worldwide. Stratis Membrane sails are also being distributed by every Doyle Sail Loft in the world. The lofts are able to either purchase the blank sail membrane and complete the sail in their own facility or can have the sails manufactured and finished at Doyle Sails NZ. Superyachts are now specifying Stratis after seeing it’s proven track records of performance, strength and weight-savings on such notable projects as Maxi race yacht Maximus and now, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/66">Red Dragon</a>.

She has a beam of 10.2m (33.5ft), draws 4.9m (16.1ft) and a displacement of 354 tonnes. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123802/image/large-94b16c2df3aaca11e7e95a3ba8ce43ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123802">Immediately after the launching, Guy Ullens, who among other interests is a leading international art collector, expressed delight at the execution of his new yacht. “Alloy Yachts has a culture of excellence, which is world class,” he said. “The yard is producing exceptional pieces like this. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/66">Red Dragon</a> is a work of art.” The design from Dubois Naval Architects is for a high performance aluminium sloop which represents a world luxury cruising yacht with the ability to stay operational for long periods at sea without outside assistance. The Wilmotte &amp; Associates designed interior has a large saloon with formal dining area for up to 10 guests. The style includes a light contemporary timber interior. The topsides are finished in anthracite grey with a white superstructure. Guest accommodation provides for an owner’s suite and three guest suites. Also included is a separate gymnasium with Pullman berth and en-suite. Forward, the crew layout has five cabins all with en-suites for up to 10 crew. The comprehensive flybridge above is accessed from the cockpit. Red Dragon is fitted with a 62.5m (205ft) carbon fibre mast with a fully battened in-boom furling mainsail. Sails are handled by 11captive and six vertical winches. The entire winch package was designed and built by Alloy Yachts. The main engine is a C32 1400hp caterpillar and she is fitted with two 90kW Northern Lights generators. Two water makers each supply up to 16000 litres per day. Bow and stern thrusters assist maneuvering in confined space. Her range under motor is approx. 5900nm at 10 knots. The Alloy Yachts SeaTouch system is installed with six touch screen monitors throughout the yacht to indicate system and alarm status. The CCTV operates with four cameras located throughout the yacht. Alloy Yachts launches Red Dragon

On Wednesday Peter Wilson watched the 84’ Langan designed Angel being launched by Yachting Developments in Hobsonville. She then motored down the harbour to have the mast stepped before returning to the dock at the yard for final tweaking. She has been 18 months in the making, and Wednesday marked a significant project milestone. <img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123787/image/large-e0574039cbaf6f9c653807130e25a355.jpg" alt="" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123787">No sooner had Peter watched Angel come to life when on Thursday, Alloy Yachts slipped <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/66">Red Dragon</a> (above) into the waterway in front of the yard and two tugs carefully shepherded her down the channel to Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. Next week, her mast will be stepped and sails hoisted for the first time. At completion this will have been a 24 month construction process that Peter and the team at MCM have nurtured since inception on the drawing boards of Dubois Naval Architects back in 2005. From now until February, the finishing touches of each yacht will be thoroughly checked by Peter and the yards' teams. Both yachts will undergo sailing, motoring and anchoring trials over the coming weeks, to ensure that all the systems are running perfectly before the key is ready to be handed over to the proud owners.<noscript></noscript>
