It does actually become your personal life aswell, when you are younger it is much easier, as the transient lifestyle is still exciting, however it gets a little more difficult to juggle when you are wanting a more routine lifestyle, as most people want as we get older.Angel Becerra - M/Y ME: Well, on a superyacht, you don't really have a personal life unless you are on vacation! Life onboard is very busy and, of course, usually you have to live onboard. So, you learn to accept the crew as your family or friends and actually, you mix your personal time with the job. However when my family came along the need for a personal life obviously became crucial. Without doubt you need to retain a large portion of flexibility, it goes with the territory, but carving out time to be with the family is naturally very important and I’ll admit it’s something I struggle with even now - that is to balance my responsibility to my family and to that of my crew. I can only hope both sides feel they get the best of me!Matthew Peak - M/Y Cocoa Bean: I don’t, really! My personal and crew life tend to blur into one, I just have to strive to always be respectful, professional and emotionally objective. I am not sure I am always 100% successful, but I do think that this balance is probably the hardest discipline in the role. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166066/image/large-5fc8460e4b0afadc94d2e5f11246dc90.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166066"> What would you be doing if you weren’t a yacht captain?Casey Burrows - M/Y Ruya: Probably working harder to become a yacht captain!Angel Becerra - M/Y ME: I can't imagine doing something else for a living… I really enjoy this job! As a child I dreamed to discover the world, reading books like Jules Verne’s ‘In Search of the Castaways’ - I was inspired by the adventure and this job has a lot of that. It’s a lot more fun than most land-based jobs.Thomas Jones - M/Y Lionheart: I do often ask myself this question. If I had never fallen into yachting, it’s likely I would have found my way into the oil and gas exploration industry as many of my peers at university did (having studied Geological Oceanography). If I were to leave the industry now or some time in the future I am not sure in what direction I would head. I love our industry - the opportunities it gives, the challenges it presents and places and people we get to see and meet. I do like the idea of an entirely new challenge away from yachting but then I have heard that said by many who have tried to make the break but have ended up back in it in some capacity so who knows?Matthew Peak - M/Y Cocoa Bean: I have no idea. I dabbled in several areas before yachting and I think I have an aptitude for at least one of them, but I didn't become seriously career focused until yachting.When it comes to life on board, do you feel certain scenarios onboard need to be dealt with in a more family-style manner, rather than strictly business?Casey Burrows - M/Y Ruya: I definitely prefer to run the boat more family style. It’s a much nicer environment for everyone, though sometimes you do still have to remind the crew it’s a professional workplace, but there is always a subtle way to do it. Hopefully if everyone is on the same page and knows right from wrong this rarely needs to happen. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166067/image/large-1034d6d12e47a79485d772442fe8459d.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166067"> Angel Becerra - M/Y ME: Absolutely. Life onboard is similar to family life, as we work and live aboard 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are expected to struggle with many scenarios with the crew in very close contact. You need to take care of your crew family.Thomas Jones - M/Y Lionheart: Absolutely. I would like to think that many of these scenarios are being dealt with within the crew and by the crew themselves long before they come to my attention. I am fortunate to work with many talented crew who have worked for this owner for many years - this naturally lends itself to a strong, and in our case a ‘family-orientated’ MO where if anyone steps outside of the accepted line of behaviour the first correction will come from a fellow crew member. In my experience a successful crew or department is one that can manage itself, support one another and recognises when it needs to correct behaviour or actions that fall outside commonly agreed limits.Matthew Peak - M/Y Cocoa Bean: I like to run a fusion of strict military style adherence to the rules combined with a friendly approachable way of dealing with the crew, again it depends on the person and the issue. I find that a friendly non-confrontational mentoring chat usually works better than a haul up to the bridge, and this is something I have softened my attitude towards a little as I have become more experienced over the years. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166068/image/large-861d89578e4c4ff7b8cd1fb610535344.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166068"> How do you overcome the difficulties of being away from home for long periods?Casey Burrows - M/Y Ruya: Social media has made it so much easier to stay in touch now, it helps with the long periods away, but keeping busy is always the best way to get through it.Angel Becerra - M/Y ME: You never overcome the feeling of being away your family, especially when your daughter or son asks for your presence on special days like birthdays and you are in the middle of the ocean with no way to return. I focus on the quality time we get together when I get vacations.Thomas Jones - M/Y Lionheart: In a word, FaceTime! Fortunately video calling as a technology came along at the right time for me and my family. My wife also came from the industry and for my children, they have never known any different, but being away from friends and family is the most difficult side of the industry from many. I have nothing but respect for the many crew whose only way of contacting their families in years gone was a payphone on the quay or even a letter in the mail. Access to email, social media, photo sharing and of course video calling are all great for keeping stronger links with home.Matthew Peak - M/Y Cocoa Bean: It's the worst part of the job, and I have not really reconciled myself with this! Modern methods of communications have all helped, but it’s certainly difficult. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166069/image/large-9a0640c89ffb4fb46834f21b9d272f5a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166069"> Do you see yourself returning to land in the future?Casey Burrows - M/Y Ruya: Yes… but it’s a super scary thought!Angel Becerra - M/Y ME: We’re all getting older, and in my opinion it is just a matter of time until you have to return ashore to start a life on land. With experience collected over all those years working on yachts, however, it would be good to stay in the yachting industry. Maybe as CEO as a yacht maintenance company.Thomas Jones - M/Y Lionheart: Certainly the day will come and some part of me looks forward to it and the changes that will come. On the other hand I can honestly say there’s not been a single day in the last 20 years where I’ve not wanted to be working at sea - I am aware how fortunate I am to be in this situation and will continue to take advantage of it for as long as it is right for myself and my family. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166070/image/large-9dc9d108284f0841475aa11ed67c74a1.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166070"> Matthew Peak - M/Y:In a word, yes. Winners of the 2016 World Superyacht Awards announced

Alia Yachts have for some time now been in the business of building high quality yachts. With their latest launch however, the Turkish yacht builder have taken this philosophy to another level. The fully custom 41.30 metre superyacht Rüya, meaning ‘Dream’ in Turkish, is the shipyard’s latest pride and joy, and is a bold statement proving that they have nothing to hide.

Launched in July 2015 at Alia Yacht’s facility in Antalya, Turkey, Rüya is a high volume tri deck motor yacht built to Lloyd Register with a Gross Tonnage of 499 GT. The owner’s brief was one of simplicity, calling for a functional and timeless design that would allow the family to use their yacht anywhere in the world.

Designer Sam Sorgiovanni achieved this by creating a stylish and well proportioned exterior while keeping areas fresh and open to be enjoyed through a variety of uses. Rüya shows of with a high freeboard and wide beam that is just shy of nine metres. The full use of GRP in the construction of the vessel means Sorgiovanni’s curved shapes could be executed at the hands of Alia’s skilled craftsmen.

Once on board it is hard to believe that Rüya is in fact under the 42 metre mark. A fabulous 93 square metre sundeck is space often found only on 50 metre plus vessels, with a 10 person Jacuzzi, full bar and large family dining area rounding off the pleasantries found on the top-most deck.

Bridge deck aft offers guests the perfect location for formal sunset dining experiences in a comfortable setting not very unlike found on the interior, with high quality furnishings and fittings aplenty.

A relaxed forward area can be found on the foredeck where guests can escape and enjoy the panoramic views while sipping in a freshly made cocktail served by Rüya’s dedicated crew.

Inside, Sorgiovanni’s handy work continues, where the owner’s vision of a relaxed and tranquil tropical beach environment has been realised. The textures of the various blends of exotic woods, bamboo and other natural materials such as masonry and leather indulges the senses of smell, touch and sight.

A large separate owner’s suite is located forward on the main deck. Here, a tasteful mix of design elements come together to create a true domestic-feel about the space where the owner will be able to enjoy his time on board his new home-away-from-home. A full beam walk through en suite bathroom is placed forward of the accommodation area, with large windows on either side enhancing the spacious feeling within the suite.

Four further guest cabins can be found downstairs on lower deck, making for a total of 10 guests’ accommodation on board Rüya.

Back outside, Rüya offers a splendid beach deck where guests can unwind or embark on an underwater adventure via a large hydraulically operated submergible staircase, which also doubles as the quay-side passarelle when moored stern-to.

The masters at Van Oossanen Naval Architects developed the engineering and below-waterline specifications of the vessel. Powered by twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines, Rüya is capable of a maximum speed of 14 knots with a range of 4,116 nm while cruising at 10 knots.

Superyacht of the Week: Alia Yachts' beautiful superyacht Rüya

Gokhan Celik, together with his partner Ömer Koray, founded Alia Yachts in 2008 after selling Peri Yachts, which they had started in 2003. With two new yachts scheduled for delivery later this year, we visited Gokhan Celik in Antalya at the end of last summer who talked us through the Alia Yachts journey.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157770/image/large-d09de6ff3b55e0410de936f679184f1a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157770">How did you get the order for the first sailing yachts you undertook?We had an American client approach us with his designer, Warwick Yacht Design, when we were still at Peri Yachts. We kept in touch, and after I had sold the company, I set up Alia Yachts. They knew that we were good at composite construction, and after some due diligence and a lot of technical discussions they decided to build the yacht with us.The 41m displacement yacht Rüya was launched last summer. Was she initially planned to be constructed using composite materials?In the beginning the boat was thought to be a steel and aluminum yacht, like most displacement yachts. But then the owner’s representative had the idea to do the project in composite, and once it became apparent that we could indeed build the yacht in composite, they really pushed for that. We said it would be easier to build in steel and aluminum but they said, “No. If you can do it, we need it to be done in the composite.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157771/image/large-b6e0e51a13a251d52dda163f86245989.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157771">By keeping the company very low profile over the past few years, you have managed to sell more than six yachts over 24 metres. How did you achieve that?We get most of our business through word of mouth and references of people we previously dealt with; not only clients but also owner’s representatives and designers. I am yet to sell a boat through a broker. There are one or two projects that we got through our personal network, but it is not enough to solely rely on that. Networking, like in any business, is important, but you have to have a certain way of doing something very well in addition to delivering a quality product, so that your network can trust you with the job.Are you open to work with brokers?Of course. As long as it is a decent deal, I am open to work with anybody. It has to be clear, transparent. Brokers are very important part of this business. They all respect and trust the client, and the shipyard as well.What’s your goal in regards to the amount of yachts you want to construct at once?It is absolutely not our intention to be a serial builder in the foreseeable future. For us, the optimum would be working on 3 to 4 large yachts at any given time, depending on the size. Above and beyond everything we’re custom yacht builders. We must protect this identity and as part of being true to this identity, be able to offer each client a unique journey through the build process.Technically, we must also recognise and respect our capabilities and capacities. We do not want to get bigger, but rather be better and better at what we do, while relentlessly increasing the quality of the product. I’ve always believed that people – from top to bottom – are the most important ingredient of what we do. Over the years we have assembled an exemplary group of people that love and respect what they do. But there’s only so many of them and there are only so many projects they can do at any given time. So we will work within this capacity but relentlessly work to keep improving the quality of what we do and the quality of the bespoke journey we offer to our clients.All your projects now are full custom. Do you want to keep creating custom yachts or is a semi-custom line also an option?It is an ongoing debate whether we should introduce a semi-custom line. It can be done, but we feel it is a step for the future, not for right now. We are working with a lot of well-known yacht designers and we have had this discussion with them as well. It will be a very rewarding venture, but in my opinion not a very easy one to achieve.You designed a 16m day-boat that turned out to be very successful, with all four built and all sold. Was that a planned venture?It was absolutely coincidence; a very important client of ours was not happy with the day boat he had, and asked me if I could do a boat for him. Once we did it for him another client saw it and wanted the same boat, and it just caught on from there.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157772/image/large-7fd1086e9e845e249e9c44cf4dee40b0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157772">On smaller boats, I believe it is harder to combine form and function in a very efficient manner. When designing the boat with Bill Dixon, we looked at what is out there, what are the clients’ needs, and what other people who might be interested in this boat might look into it or need. He did a very good design, we built great boats and the whole thing is very successful. This is a boat we are very excited about.What are the upcoming projects for Alia Yachts?We currently have a 30 metre and a 60 metre under construction that will both be delivered in 2016. We have spent the last year improving the process of our constructions and adding quality to our products in order to qualify for ISO. As you know, you can get ISO certification from anywhere but we wanted to be associated with the Lloyd's name as it is important for our clients and us. Yesterday the Turkish shipyard Alia Yachts launched the 41.29 metre full-displacement motor yacht Rüya. The composite motor yacht is built to Lloyds Register and complies with the MCA LY2. Following a build period of just over two years, Rüya will now undergo extensive sea trials before delivery to her new owners in September 2015.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155509/image/large-aaba6ed3172f25c0afb2c903bca9aa18.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155509">Built for experienced owners, the design brief was for a spacious sub-500GT go-anywhere yacht around the 40 metre mark, with a timeless design that was both practical and functional.According to the yard, the owners had chosen Alia Yachts, because of their experience in producing high-quality custom yachts, but also because Alia Yachts is one of the very few shipyards that can build a fully custom superyachts between 30 and 60 metres.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155510/image/large-a1c2845b7f80cf6600267b9f759d3e66.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155510">“We have kept a low profile to date, because building high quality custom yachts has always been our main focus,” says Gokhan Celik, President of Alia Yachts. “And this approach has paid off. Thanks to referrals from our clients, owner’s representatives and designers, buyers with custom projects know how to find us. As a result we are now building four custom yachts ranging from 30 metres up to 80 metres and we have some very serious enquiries for yachts over 40 metres.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155511/image/large-0228049961a16e4675469be3028143c5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155511">Rüya is an exceptionally voluminous yacht, with multiple usable spaces. Clean, flowing lines add visual length and ensure that the tri-deck design will make an elegant sight on the water. Particular focus was placed on maximising the outdoor areas, with the yacht boasting a huge 93m2 sun deck with full bar and 10-person Jacuzzi. The vessel’s aft storage hatches open up to create a practical sports area with a spacious swim deck and on-water Beach Club.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155512/image/large-7715b66a72763572e090cb7f7c622334.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155512">Sam Sorgiovanni, who designed both the interior and exterior of Rüya, embraced the challenge of creating this spacious yacht within the size and GT constraints requested by the owner. “There is no question that the volume and beam of the yacht creates the feeling of being on a much bigger yacht, with its fully custom design unique for a vessel in this size range,” he said. “The interior layout and sophisticated decor along with the exterior design combine to create a compact superyacht that defies its length.” The designer is full of praise for the yard’s work in executing his design. “The exceptional build quality executed by Alia Yachts is equal to the best and is a credit to the skill and craftsmanship of all involved,” he said.Rüya is able to accommodate 10 guests across five cabins, with two additional Pullmans. The master suite is located on the main deck, with two double and two twin VIP guest staterooms on the lower deck.
