With a career spanning more than two decades, an exceptional line up of yachts to his name and more than 300 metres of yacht launched last year alone, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4540" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vickers Studio (Company)">John Vickers</a> is a man worth speaking to. Starting his career as one of the first designers at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">Redman Whiteley Dixon (now RWD)</a>, John cut his teeth on the myriad of major projects that the studio underwent in its foundling years and by the age of only 27 he was project managing the interior design of the 155-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Said155.0m (508'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2008">Al Said</a>. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291899/image/large-72c586f3536c174c52b3f2aae0804dc0.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291899">Originally destined for a life onboard, John has a deep love of classic yachts but realised quite quickly that he needed an injection of creativity in his life to keep him excited. After several years overlooking the Thames the studio escaped the city to a barn conversion studio near Chichester harbour on the UK’s beautiful south coast. The passion from the studio is obvious with the level of detail and care taken with the owners' dream projects. John loves to listen and create unique designs with creative layers in each pen line and shape. “We love to perfect the exterior in conjunction with the layout, which also gets the best results for the interior design. Having solved so many interior design problems, we find that often the interior designer gets brought in last for a project, in reality they should be involved right from the start helping create a really spectacular layout. It has meant that the majority of his new-builds have won superyacht awards, even when not building at top tier shipyards. “It’s not something you can ever guarantee, but we have seemed to do it fairly regularly’; something that might be of interest to shipyards and clients wanting this level of top industry recognition. In the last eight years, many have been semi custom and refits tailored meticulously to very varied tastes and styles of the client”. We recently did a very demanding and detailed refit on the 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6595" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanbird53.0m (173'11&quot;)Sanlorenzo2021">Oceanbird</a>, we expanded the team to 15 strong and produced 24 visuals and 50 CAD drawings in less than four weeks, and for the 75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Meserret III75.0m (246'1&quot;)Peene-Werft GmbH1992">Leander</a> we completed full layout redesign with complicated interior joinery creation all for a very experienced owner on four-decks in only eight weeks.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237702/image/large-0ed4b3794019bf9b0d5c2d5d4a5ce007.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237702">Over the coming year he hopes to further expand the portfolio of projects, with his team of design experts and with two refits and a number of new-builds already underway.

Constructed out of steel and aluminium, the 1,128 GT superyacht features both exterior design and naval architecture by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a>. The 2,914 GT superyacht has been configured with seven staterooms to provide accommodation for up to 14 guests. With 2022 nearly a wrap, <a href="https://superyachttimes.ac-page.com/homepage" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a> has taken a look back at the sales figures for the year – and rather than comparing them to pre-pandemic levels, we’ve done a year-on-year comparison to 2021 – and the figures are surprising. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241340/image/large-9d572f9bc938600c848018ec5b0dd2ce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241340">Straight off the bat, it needs to be noted that there were nearly 200 fewer transactions closed this year than there were during the pandemic-induced boom in 2021. Last year brokers all around the world sold 456 used motor yachts and 37 used sailing yachts of 30 metres or more – it wasn’t just a record-breaking year, it saw close to 200 yachts added onto the annual average. Taking a preliminary look at 2022, sales have rebalanced to the pre-pandemic average of 2020, 2019 and 2018.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251856/image/large-410e40346f783f7035d9d5ff70506a73.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251856">Thus far in 2022, more than 300 used yachts of 30 metres and longer have been sold; interestingly, the average last known asking price of the yachts sold this year surpassed 2021 by more than €2 million. So even though fewer yachts have been sold this year, on average the price of these used yachts is more expensive than in 2021, which might point to a further tightening of the brokerage market. Last year the average last asking price was just over €11 million for yachts, which has jumped to €13.1m this year. Notably, there was a significant 10 percent decrease in the amount of days yachts spent on the market this year.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252041/image/large-4f26eb68021633d583101adf5fa1c345.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252041">In keeping with the used sales market trend, there was a substantial decrease in new orders this year compared to 2021. Last year a total of 312 new contracts over 30-metres were signed, 57 percent of which were between the 30 to 40 metre category and 5 percent in the 80 metre and above segment. This year, however, 202 new orders were signed; 51 percent were in the 30 to 40 metre category and 6 percent in the 80 metre and above.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/205414/image/large-41db81b83d07fd6570ab426267a5c782.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/205414">We also witnessed an unexpected sale this year, which was the result of the war in Ukraine and the subsequent blacklist placed on a collection of Russian oligarchs with direct links to the Kremlin. This sale was the 72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a>-built superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> which sold at auction in Gibraltar for $37,500,000 in September. A number of other superyachts have been arrested around the world, which could still potentially be put under the hammer.&nbsp;What differentiated <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> from the other arrested Russian-owned superyachts is that her owner unlawfully took out a loan with JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co as the sole shareholder of Pyrene Investments. As the yacht's owner was on the sanction list his assets were frozen and it was illegal for the bank to accept any repayments from him. The Oceanco-built 88-metre Infinity and the fellow Dutch-built 69.15-metre Damen vessel Intrepid have been spotted enjoying the lesser visited waters of Costa Rica recently. Although certainly off the traditional beaten track for large superyachts partly due to a lack of infrastructure in the region and surrounding areas, several recent improvements could see more superyacht traffic in the Americas in the coming years.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/21692/image/large-72b6fb477d41ad94940c94d21051ca8a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/21692">&nbsp;As an example, the Golfito Marina Village and Resort in Costa Rica where Intrepid and Infinity are pictured above is now offering 100-metre berths for sale. Offered for sale by Denison, these are the only berths of this size currently available in the Americas. Sitting at the crossroads between the Caribbean and the Pacific, the marina has been a fairly popular spot for explorer superyachts for a number of years, though with the latest offering to larger superyachts, Denison expects to see the area to grow in popularity. Seen here in the medieval town of Valletta on the Mediterranean island of Malta is the 69-metre yacht support vessel Intrepid and 80-metre Titan. Both yachts have since moved east with Titan now exploring the Maldives and Intrepid having joined her mothership, Infinity, in Singapore.

Recently seen side by side off Monaco was the cruising pair of superyachts Infinity and Intrepid. The 67 metre Damen-built support yacht was launched in March this year and joined her 88.5 metre mothership Infinity, delivered by Oceanco in 2015, a few weeks ago.

In Pictures: Infinity and support yacht Intrepid outside Monaco

Damen’s brand new 69 metre SeaAxe support yacht named Intrepid, the shipyard’s largest addition to its Yacht Support range, has arrived in the Italian port of Trieste this week along with her mothership Infinity. The two Dutch built vessels were until recently still in the Netherlands – Infinity, who returned to the Oceanco shipyard where she was launched in 2014 for a short maintenance period, and Intrepid which was seen at Damen's facility in Vlissingen from where she conducted sea trials following her launch earlier this year. Hull number two of Damen’s 69 metre range is currently in build, and expected to be delivered in 2017.

Intrepid is an evolution of Damen's 67 metre support yacht range, of which two hulls have been built; Garçon, and 6711. In addition to a longer overall length, a feature that sets her apart from the two smaller sister ships is the innovative heli-deck on the very aft section of Intrepid, capable of receiving a Eurocopter AS365 or Agusta Westland AW109. The platform opens to reveal a hangar into which the helicopter disappears below deck.

Her narrow beam of 11.50 metres along with four MTU 16V4000 M63L 1A engines allow for a top speed up to 20 knots, with an impressive range of 4,500 nm in nearly any sea state whilst maintaining 16 knots. On board she offers accommodation for up to 21 crew and staff members. 250 square metres of deck space is available outside for cargo storage and another 110 square metres of concealed space inside.

Infinity was delivered last week by Dutch shipyard Oceanco, and boasts exterior design by Espen Øino and an interior design by Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design and David Kleinberg Design Associates. This 89 metre superyacht accommodates her owners in a large master suite including a private exterior deck and jacuzzi, as well as 10 guests in 6 guest suites, including 2 VIP cabins. Earlier this week, Oceanco rolled out superyacht project 710, an 88.50 metre yacht designed by Espen Oeino. The yacht has since been moved to Rotterdam, where she was lowered into the water.
