The 30.8-metre sailing yacht Sarafin has been sold, it has been announced. Built by British yard Oyster Yachts in 2011, the all-aluminium vessel was designed by Dubois Naval Architects.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/29168/image/large-a57ddcde0b876dfa05a0f06162f0833e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29168">Sarafin underwent an extensive refit recently, in which included the yacht receiving a new mainsail, new standard rigging, and the rebuilding of both her generations. Following the launch of Sarafin in 2011, Oyster Yachts, Dubois Naval Architects and RMK Marine worked together again to deliver the second unit in this series. Carrying the Oyster Yachts brand name, the yacht was built in Turkey at RMK who also delivered the largest yacht in the Oyster fleet the very next year, the Oyster 125 Twilight. Under perfect skies and with promising winds, the fourth Dubois Cup officially started at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in scenic Porto Cervo, Sardinia. 14 Dubois-designed sailing yachts and two Dubois motor yachts have gathered for this invitational event, which sees some of the most beautiful sailing superyachts in the world compete for the Cup.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/144246/image/large-54bd8325c629647be238f34a45480b43.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/144246">"Through this event, we are supporting the whole industry, and indeed, the whole industry is supporting us," Ed Dubois said from the deck of the yacht club, overlooking the gathering fleet. We see this event continuing every two years for as long as the industry is happy to support it and for as long as our owners continue to enjoy it!"As the stern lines came ashore and the yachts aligned themselves for a few days' competition, the crews came to inspect their friendly rivals, owners walk the pier viewing the design direction for other projects, and potential new clients inspect the handiwork of the yards. It's a weekend to relax, to race for fun, and to enjoy the camaraderie that such an intimate regatta affords.Genevieve took the win on the first day of racing, with a 12 second lead over Nostromo. On a day marked by wildly variable winds, from virtual calm to an estimated 40 knots, seamanship, tactics and good luck all had a part to play in a spectacular day of racing.The first day got underway yesterday with a Captain's briefing at 9:30am on the terrace at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Despite clear skies, the mercurial winds of Sardinia proved a challenge for the race committee who requested to inspect the options for the course and plan for the best wind.By 11am no clear options had emerged, though an amended version of course 19 had been suggested as a possible option, with winds to the North of Porto Cervo observed to be upwards of 20 knots by mid-morning. Winds to the south appeared to be calm and so expectations focused on tactics for a beat north into a good Northwesterly breeze, rounding the northern tip of la Maddalena island with a reach through what's affectionately known as Bomb Alley.On the line at noon, there was no wind, and so the start was delayed as the race committee investigated options. With a new start line moved north over the wind line, the eight competing yachts set out at three minute intervals, with Genevieve out first. Quickly, the winds increased, with some yachts reporting estimated 40 knot gusts, at which point Salperton retired. "We saw the wind speeds climbing over 30 knots, and it looked as though they'd keep increasing, so we made the call to stay safe and we retired," said Barry Houghton, owner of Salperton. "I've had an incident in the past and I simply won't risk the safety of my crew," he continued.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/144248/image/large-947252ac22d1c7a9df160f4daed1ec4b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/144248">The rest of the fleet pressed on, with some taking a wide line out to the east, while Zefira and others hugged the coast of Caprera in what remained a strong breeze. At Bomb Alley, the fleet were tight together, with Zefira in apparent lead as they rounded Abbatoggia and set up to reach south. Bliss and Prana were quick to hoist spinnakers, but all were confounded by baffling airs at the south end of the bay, where the winds reduced to a light breeze, then appeared to shift 180 degrees in a matter of minutes. "It was an absolute lottery there at the end," said Captain Lachie Paramor of Sarafin, who placed third. "It was just a confusing day, really, with no wind then 30 knots, then as quickly as it came, it left. It was good fun though!""We had it all today, didn't we?" commented Scott Mackenzie, Captain of Nostromo, who came in second. "Everyone on board had a fantastic day. Our owner was our helmsman, and he helmed the whole way and had a fantastic day as well."<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/144249/image/large-64b3b6d8131d1cda75b93b67662668b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/144249">"As we were coming through Bomb Alley, we were all making 13 or 14 knots, and it was just amazing to see," said Mike Toppa, of North Sails, who was aboard Genevieve - which won the day's racing on corrected time by a margin of 12 seconds over Nostromo. "As we approached the finish line, the winds shifted from the west to the east, and all the boats had to deal with that. Being a lower-rated boat we had a bit of advantage, but we thought we dealt with it well, and we were able to get in a win.""I've been racing in Porto Cervo for 20 years. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda does a really great job, the coastline is gorgeous and you never know what you're going to get. That's a part of racing and that's part of what makes this one of my favourite places in the world to sail."Less wind is expected for the second day's racing. The Dubois Cup 2013 kicks off in Sardinia

Twenty-one sailing superyachts and six motor yachts have already registered for the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta &amp; Rendezvous taking place in Virgin Gorda (BVI) from 20th to 23rd March, hosted by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and BIM. Oyster reports on another significant landmark in its Superyacht build programme. The first Oyster 125, by Dubois, has moved out of the build shed in preparation for her forthcoming launch and sailing trials in February. Oyster prepares for launch of superyacht Twilight

Last Saturday the winners of the World Superyacht Awards were announced at the luxurious Çırağan Palace Kempinski in Istanbul, Turkey. The most prestigious awards, Motor Yacht of the Year and Sailing Yacht of the Year, were won by the 77.70 metre Feadship superyacht Tango and the 67.20 metre Alloy Yachts superyacht Vertigo. World Superyacht Award winners announced

The Oyster Group informs us they are setting up an operation in Palma, Mallorca to expand the services it provides to its clients. Commencing September 2011, Philip (Spike) Thompson will help develop the Oyster presence in the Mediterranean to support the 150+ fleet of yachts Oyster has built between 60' and 100', together with the large fleet of classic yachts and superyachts, which Oyster's subsidiary, Southampton Yacht Services, has refitted or rebuilt over the past 30 years. First Oyster 100 superyacht launched

The first hull of the new Oyster 125 superyachts has been successfully released from the mould after post curing in RMK’s purpose built 40m oven. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132321/image/large-cca83be8c32041ad80afae1e54428a15.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132321">Although Oyster didn’t set out to break world records, it was only once the process was well under way that we realised we had just set a new world record. With nearly 6.3 tonnes of resin flowing in around four hours, this was the largest single continuous infusion anywhere in the world – the previous record being a bridge structure at around 6 tonnes. The moulding of the new Oyster superyachts uses one of the most technically advanced aerospace standard composite injection systems, developed to produce a consistent high strength to weight laminate to maximise durability, in a controlled and environmentally friendly process. The high-tech Kevlar and carbon substraits are used to maximise impact resistance and structural rigidity. Once the moulding process is complete, the hull and secondary structure are post-cured in a giant oven at 60º C for 48 hours to give the structure ultimate temperature stability. Computers monitor the whole process via thermo couplers, recording the temperatures at multiple points within the laminate. A Lloyd’s surveyor oversees every aspect of the build, giving owners peace of mind about the whole manufacturing process. Fit out of the first Oyster 125 is now underway and the yacht will be on the water in summer 2011. With four yachts in build by early Autumn 2010 - Oyster 100-01, 100-02 and 100-03 and Oyster 125-01 - the next build slot is for delivery 2012 and this exciting Oyster/RMK partnership is now gathering pace. Introducing the Oyster 100 and Oyster 125 superyachts

The first Oyster 100 superyacht came out of the mould on 14th September 2009 after post-curing of the hull and secondary structure in RMK’s purpose built 40m oven. The keel stub was attached in late October and the yacht weighed to determine longitudinal and vertical centres of gravity.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129447/image/large-6aa9325fc5652add72d08db49179fedd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129447">As with everything else in this superbly managed project, the weight and CG’s came out as predicted, proving the infusion process had not only produced a homogeneous and strong laminate, but it had also controlled resin flows well and resulted in a +100A1 Lloyds Classification hull, strong and accurately on target.At just over 20 tonnes the structure weighs about 75% of the equivalent hull in aluminium, delivering the first part of Oyster’s prediction that their composite superyachts will provide a better combination of strength, performance and use of internal volume for a quiet and sophisticated environment, than an equivalent yacht built of aluminium alloys.As the internal woodwork takes place in a templating framework off the boat, ready for rapid installation over the next few months in its “fully-floating” construction method, which damps down noise and vibration, the systems and engineering are now taking shape in parallel to the same high standards proved in the composite work to date. With launch planned next summer, we look forward to proudly showing this first Oyster Superyacht at the Monaco yacht show in September 2010. Oyster 100-02 is now sold, subject to contract, and hull moulding has started. Fit-out of 100-02 commences early next year with launch planned early 2011, so planning is on track to have two Oyster 100’s racing in the Dubois Cup in June 2011.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129448/image/large-f0afb3cbde38b02d907e3fbb6c62a9ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129448">Oyster 125-01 starts moulding at the end of January 2010, with launch targeted for summer 2011 in time for the Monaco Yacht Show that year. The moulding slot for hull #4 – available June 2010 for either Oyster 100-03 or Oyster 125-02, is now subject to a gentlemanly contract race with a summer 2011 delivery for 100-03 or spring 2012 for 125-02.Exciting times indeed as we now establish a process of being able to mould a hull and deck every three to four months with up to four yachts in fit-out/commissioning at the same time. This enables a possible contract to handover schedule of approximately 18 months for the Oyster 100 and approximately 21 months for the Oyster 125.

First Oyster 100 superyacht on schedule for 2010 launch

RMK Marine has successfully implemented the use of resin-infusion technology in the construction of the new Oyster superyachts. This technique is used by only a few shipyards locally and a significant development for both Oyster Marine and RMK Marine. Following an agreement with luxury yacht producer Oyster Marine, RMK Marine are building the 30m (100ft) and 38m (125ft) series yachts which have been designed by Ed Dubois. The “Hull infusion”, was a major step in the construction programme for the 30m Oyster 100 model superyacht. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128675/image/large-1f44e5a498e1577ab62c92fbb9ce06a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128675">The resin infusion process is accepted as one of the most environmentally-friendly methods in yacht building. It leads to consistent, lightweight and high strength structures. To ensure best practice a consultancy service was assembled from experts around the world to advise and train the technical staff working on the production of Oyster super yachts. Having planned and predicted the process the application was checked through many detailed tests. All the structure was rigorously analysed by Oysters structural engineering team and following numerous tests of the structural properties of moulded parts of every section of the structure was approved by Lloyds for notation. The infusion method is applied by pulling liquid resin by vacuum, through the dry structural fibres laid into the prepared mould. Before this the dry fibre layers are covered by a nylon vacuum bag that ensures that the product surface and surrounding area will not be contaminated and consolidates the structure under pressure. The spread of the gases emerging to the surrounding environment as a result of the resin reaction is also prevented. This method of infused Vinylester composite construction from production tooling is designed to facilitate rapid and accurate build of these high quality yachts. To accommodate this specialist build, RMK Marine has a large purpose built workshop 80m long and 40m wide which houses a 40m long oven, which is one of the largest of its kind. The oven is used to post-cure the structure leading to enhanced mechanical properties of the materials and in particular stability at the varying temperatures that will be experienced by the laminate. This sort of process is unusual in yacht building but was considered the appropriate technology by the RMK/Oyster team for this quality of production. With the investments in its infrastructure and facilities as well as investment in its labour force RMK Marine has continued to demonstrate the capability of Turkish SuperYacht construction. RMK Marine implement high level composites technology

The first two Oyster Superyachts designed by Dubois are starting to take shape at the RMK Marine facility in Tuzla, Turkey. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126789/image/large-3fce825337b4a3922b2b70065ac42f6a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126789"> The Oyster 100 is the first of these to go into production and it is progressing well in the new purpose built facility. Currently the mould is being prepared to infuse the first hull and tests were recently successfully carried out on a full size test infusion of a 3m hull through midship section. The hull moulding is expected to be completed by April when RMK Marine will start to fit the engine and stern gear. Oyster superyachts take shape at RMK Marine

Oyster Marine is pleased to announce two new appointments effective from 27 November 2008. Richard Winckles, Managing Partner of Balmoral Capital, who purchased Oyster in February 2008, becomes Non Executive Chairman. At the same time David Tydeman joins Oyster as Group Chief Executive. The group includes Oyster Marine, Oyster Brokerage, Oyster Yacht Charter and Southampton Yacht Services. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126150/image/large-b474d51471e859a26039cd91cc747f05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126150">Together they will lead the next phase of the growth of Oyster as it continues to expand its overseas sales and its range of larger yachts. David Tydeman, an accomplished sailor, trained as a naval architect, has an MBA, and is an ex Managing Director of Beneteau UK. Throughout his career he has also held senior management positions in UK and overseas companies, mainly in the engineering and construction sectors. Most recently he was CEO of the Construction Division of Skanska UK, part of one of the world’s leading construction groups. Oyster’s founder, Richard Matthews, steps down after 36 years to become a Non Executive Director and will continue to act in an advisory and ambassadorial capacity for the company, both ashore and afloat. Richard is looking forward to sailing Oyster’s first superyacht, the Dubois designed Oyster 100 due to be launched in 2010 and is also purchasing the first Oyster 125 Flybridge, which will be afloat a year later.

Management changes at Oyster Marine

RMK Marine have just unveiled the new facilities which will be used for the Dubois designed Oysters to be built in. The composite construction facility is 72m long, 40m wide and 18m high and houses a 40 metre long oven. It has been purpose built for the Oyster 100 and 125 models designed by Dubois. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124724/image/large-968fa1643ca88111945cbe52092826e7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124724">The first Oyster 100 has started build in the new facility and is due to be launched in 2010. The Oyster 125 will start tooling at RMK in June 2008 with delivery scheduled for 2011. Like the 100, this is infused Vinylester composite built from production tooling to facilitate rapid and accurate build of these high quality yachts. RMK Marine recently had a visit from the Turkish Prime Minister who came to view the new facilities and meet the team.

RMK Marine unveil new Dubois Oyster superyacht workshop

RMK yachts opened a new composite construction facility at their yard in Tuzla, Turkey. This new composite construction facility houses a 40-metre long oven, and has been purpose designed and built to manufacture the new Dubois/Oyster 100’ and 125’ composite Superyachts to the highest standards of construction. RMK is currently building a classic style Sparkman and Stevens designed <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/804">52m aluminium ketch</a>. The hull is complete and outfitting is well under way. Launch is scheduled for the later part of 2008. In addition construction of the <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1782">Oyster 100</a> hull plug has started with deck plug construction due to start in February. Tooling for the new Oyster 125 will follow directly on from Oyster 100 tooling. <noscript></noscript>

New composite construction facility for RMK Yachts

On 10 July 2007 Oyster signed a commercial agreement with RMK Marine to build the new Dubois designed Oyster 100 and 125 yachts at their yard in Istanbul Turkey. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123629/image/large-ca98d0875b752c98a6ac759cd5c5ac87.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123629">Oyster Marine Chairman Richard Matthews and designer Ed Dubois joined Mr Rahmi M. Koç, Chairman of the Koç Group, owners of the RMK Marine yard, for a sail aboard Rahmi’s beautifully restored 1925 vintage Fife gaff rigged 12 Metre yacht Lady Edith. Setting sail from the Koç owned Kalamiş Marina in Istanbul Lady Edith crossed the Bosporus towards the south shore of the Golden Horn within a mile or two of the Blue Mosque built in 1617. The cockpit of Lady Edith was chosen as an ideal signing place for an agreement under which RMK Marine will construct female tooling, mould composite hulls and fit out the new Dubois designed Oyster 100 and 125 yachts which Oyster Marine will market worldwide. The project will start with the 100 model, tooling for which is expected to start in the third quarter of 2007 with the first yacht scheduled for completion at the end of 2009. After the signing Matthews, Dubois and Koç hosted a reception attended by over 40 members of the Turkish press and TV. Interest in the Oyster/RMK Marine deal was measured next day by extensive coverage in the Turkish national press. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123630/image/large-eeeddc7fad639a4e27903f0e445634e1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123605">Promotional drawings for the Oyster 100 are expected to be released within the next two weeks, while specification and price will be confirmed before the boat show season in early September. Drawings and prices for the Dubois designed Oyster 125 will be available in October and tooling for the 125, launching in 2010, will commence next year. Koç is Turkeys largest group and represents 11% of Turkeys GNP. The Koç Group are currently ranked 200 in the Fortune 500 list of companies worldwide. RMK Marine is currently building a 170 ft S&amp;S designed yacht to be launched towards the end of 2008, which will benchmark quality for the Oyster 100.<noscript></noscript>
