Not every superyacht adventure involves sipping cold beverages under palm trees and feeling golden sand between your toes. For some, superyachts are the perfect vessels from which to explore the unchartered waters of the earth’s most remote and undisturbed corners.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291843/image/large-ff274b3b59a379eb4938d9b30b315202.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291843">Home to grand and gargantuan glaciers, a raw and rugged coastline and wildlife as diverse as its landscapes, Alaska is a wild and wonderful superyacht destination where guests can immerse themselves in exploration and escapism.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291844/image/large-68c641a9ae4ea64f85a4a14446301167.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291844">The 40-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport</a> motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3322" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serengeti39.62m (129'12&quot;)Westport Yachts2002">Serengeti</a> is a fish in Alaska’s waters. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3322" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serengeti39.62m (129'12&quot;)Westport Yachts2002">Serengeti</a> has nearly ten years of yachting in Alaska under her belt,” Captain Zack Hurowitz explained. “She is no stranger to the waters of the Pacific Northwest, cruising here immediately following her launch in 2002 and in the years to follow.”The flybridge superyacht features modifications which allow her to cruise seamlessly in Alaska, including an enclosed flybridge and main deck aft and zero speed stabilisers to adapt to the region’s unique conditions. “These various adaptations mean we can navigate through icebergs to view glaciers, fish for salmon and halibut off the swim platform, soak our bow in the waterfalls with great manoeuvrability and spend time with the whales at rest on the open seas in comfort.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291845/image/large-51e19a2c124580c43d28a797e4699bea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291845">Known as The Last Frontier, Alaska draws in a hardy and adventure-craving crowd to explore its remote wilderness and untamed terrain. The largest and least densely populated state in the USA, Alaska is where the wild things are. “Raw, wild and boundless is how I would describe Alaska,” Captain Zack Hurowitz told SuperYacht Times.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291960/image/large-41a7a5fa2d1919a5cde89f3698842f64.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291960">A place where things operate on an incomprehensible scale, the state is characterised by its endless and unexplored expanses where nature runs the score. Painting this picture, Hurowitz explained, “Alaska has a rugged coastline that has the tendency to make you feel quite small in the best way possible.” He continued, “The nature here is as raw and wild as it gets, with a bountiful summertime food chain and feeding frenzies of every level happening at every turn. Our engines shut off, adrift and patient, we waited, not knowing where the pod of whales might resurface next. Bubbles suddenly began to encircle the tender in geometric inward spirals. Our program would not be able to operate as it does without the support and communication we receive from our friends here in Southeast Alaska. It is not often you have a crossover of yacht crew, fisherman, and naturalists alike, all working cohesively in common cruising grounds. The mentality of respect and appreciation for the sea and its bounty is shared by all those who live and work on the water here in Alaska. Captain Zack Hurowitz talks exploring Alaska on 40m motor yacht Serengeti

Francesca Webster sat down with Jim Glidewell, serial yacht owner and lover of Alaska, to find out more about his life with yachts.I joined Jim Glidewell aboard his 58-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Unbridled58.22m (191'0&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2009">Unbridled</a> at Rybovich Marina during the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palm Beach International Boat Show - 2023">Palm Beach International Boat Show</a> this March. It was the second time I had the pleasure of meeting Jim, having first interviewed him under the same circumstances a year before, at that time to discuss his experience of yacht brokerage firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a>, with whom he’d recently acquired the yacht. During this meeting however, it was Jim himself that was the topic of discussion.&nbsp;A highly successful businessman with a Dentistry empire and over 5,000 employees, Jim is a force to reckon with. Over the decades his love of yachting has led to the acquisition of more than 12 yachts, and he currently owns two other superyachts in addition to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a>, the 39.62-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3322" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serengeti39.62m (129'12&quot;)Westport Yachts2002">Serengeti</a> and the 39-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/610" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northcoast Yachts (Company)">NorthCoast</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4337" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shogun39.0m (127'11&quot;)Northcoast Yachts2002">Shogun</a>, both of which he retains between the USA’s West Coast and in the Bahamas. The larger yachts are then accompanied by a smattering of smaller boats, including a 63 foot superfast Baia Azzura called Parvina&nbsp;after his wife, and a number of fishing boats.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/283465/image/large-51c52abfc6c51babecd058aa24be7dbc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/283465">&nbsp;Jim’s love of being onboard began during the Vietnam War when, at the age of 18, ran a 40-footer delivering marines from warships to shore. “That’s where the passion for it really started. It was great fun, yes we got shot at a few times but only because I hadn’t paid my bar bill! I was born in Las Vegas – you can't get much more landlocked than that – so Vietnam was a real experience and working a boat really ignited my passion.” Returning from Vietnam to school in California, Jim moved to a house on the water with a boat dock and gradually his boats grew in size. From a 30 to a 40 foot, he in 1995 eventually graduated to the 28.6-metre Voyager from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>, a contemporary of &nbsp;John Staluppi’s famous high speed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Octopussy 43.58m (142'12&quot;)Heesen Yachts1988">Octopussy</a>.&nbsp;After Voyager, Jim unscaled to the 36.57-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/488" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Broward Marine (Company)">Broward Marine</a> motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sovereign Lady36.57m (119'12&quot;)Broward Marine1991">Sovereign</a> (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sovereign Lady36.57m (119'12&quot;)Broward Marine1991">Sovereign Lady</a>). He then bought the 37.19-metre custom <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1093" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flagship (Company)">Flagship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1793" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serenity37.19m (122'0&quot;)Flagship1993">Bon Bon</a> (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1793" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serenity37.19m (122'0&quot;)Flagship1993">Serenity</a>) at auction. He kept <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1793" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serenity37.19m (122'0&quot;)Flagship1993">Bon Bon</a> up until a few years ago, only replacing her with his current <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1793" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serenity37.19m (122'0&quot;)Flagship1993">Serengeti</a> in 2013. Serengeti was built for the entertainer, Johnny Carson. Since then, Jim has owned the 49-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zoom Zoom Zoom49.07m (160'12&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2005">Zoom Zoom Zoom</a>, which he sold in 2021, and the 47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Admiral (Company)">Admiral</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/490" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Star Diamond46.93m (153'12&quot;)Admiral Marine Works1998">Star Diamond</a>, previously named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/490" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Star Diamond46.93m (153'12&quot;)Admiral Marine Works1998">Ohana</a>, then <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/490" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Star Diamond46.93m (153'12&quot;)Admiral Marine Works1998">Rhino</a> and also sold in 2021.&nbsp;One thing that is conspicuous among the extraordinary list of yachts that Jim has owned over the years is that, bar the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>, they are American built, essentially representing a who's-who of American yacht builders. “That is an intentional decision because if you cruise in Alaska with a foreign flag they require that you take a pilot onboard for $3,000 per day, even if the yacht is American flagged now and used to fly a different flag.”For Jim, cruising in Alaska is the pinnacle of his time spent aboard and it’s one of the main places he charters <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3322" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serengeti39.62m (129'12&quot;)Westport Yachts2002">Serengeti</a>. “Straight from the airport in Juneau there's the glacier, salmon, bears, and that’s before I’ve even put people on the boat!” Members of the crew use drones to capture the charter weeks and Jim is clearly an enthusiast, also fitting <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Unbridled58.22m (191'0&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2009">Unbridled</a> with drones that take off from the water. “The thing about having a drone onboard is that you’re creating immediate memories that my family or charter guests can take home with them. All of the charter guests are given a video at the end of the week and they love that, it's a nice touch, especially because we really want people to remember the time onboard and come back the next year.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/31931/image/large-27280f6c6c1dfe5d20bdf032a3756327.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31931">When in Alaska himself, Jim and his family like to explore the islands and climb icebergs. “The kids take the pickaxes and climb the bergs with ice buckets and fill them up for our evening cocktails. My perfect week onboard with the family would be up there, hiking among the creeks, setting traps for Dungeness crabs and fishing for salmon, halibut and shrimp. We have a barbecue and fish smoker onboard and I've recently bought an enclosed ACI 32’ tender that is better for that region because you keep warm and dry.”Not only are Jim’s yachts American, they also tend to sit around the 40 metre mark, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Unbridled58.22m (191'0&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2009">Unbridled</a> being the outlier at nearly 60-metres. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Unbridled58.22m (191'0&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2009">Unbridled</a> is a brilliant boat, not only is she super spacious on the inside, but she also has this massive 36-foot beam and big decks so I can have big parties out here with all of our team. Actually before we found this boat I went to my broker Kevin Merrigan and said ‘look I want a 36 foot beam and I don't care how long the boat is’.”While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Unbridled58.22m (191'0&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2009">Unbridled</a> spends most of her time down in Florida and the Bahamas, she is also chartered up the East Coast to Nantucket and Newport, Rhode Island. Fitted with the full suite of diving gear, the yacht was originally built as a dive vessel and you can see that clearly from her deck configuration. The main deck aft is a tender deck, with a large open plan layout that lends itself to diving preparation, while the upper decks are used for entertainment with dining and lounge arrangements. It is a great thing to be able to offer the team and they really love being onboard the boat. Having 30 management people at one exotic location was something they will not forget. Over the past 50 years, American philanthropist and dentistry entrepreneur Jim Glidewell has built a multimillion-dollar business from the ground up. Founder and CEO of Glidewell Laboratories, he has used that success to not only grow one of the largest dental companies in the world, but to continuously invest in his ultimate passion: boats. Following the traditional route of yacht ownership, Glidewell started out with a 29-footer (8.8-metres), slowly progressed to superyachts in the 50-metre range, and has enjoyed plenty of variation in between. Currently aboard his 49-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a>-built yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zoom Zoom Zoom49.07m (160'12&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2005">Zoom Zoom Zoom</a> with his family in Nantucket, Massachusetts, Glidewell tells us about his journey through yacht ownership, the charter market during Covid-19, and why he will always charter his boats for the benefit of his crew.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/193876/image/large-41909e51970552244c44a84e51b1812b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/193876"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/193875/image/large-c8f05d464d9eb50f4d06ce4fe4d402b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/193875">Though his ownership experience has been somewhat conventional, Glidewell's entry into the world of luxury superyachts wasn't quite so traditional. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, Glidewell grew up a world away from the open ocean. His introduction to boating was not as a child, nor was it in the polished luxury of superyachts, but onboard rugged naval vessels during his time in the Vietnam War. "Even though I was raised in Las Vegas in the middle of the desert, when I went into the navy, I somehow ended up running boats," he explains.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/7234/image/large-c6002b09443b6afb200e3506a3ef2a11.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7234">Since opening its first store in California in 1970, Glidewell Dental Labs is today the world's largest privately-owned provider of restorative dental solutions and has expanded to include 13 offices across the Americas with over 4,000 employees. As the business grew over the years, so did the yachts. In 1987, Glidewell upgraded to a 50-footer and over the next decade, moved on to a 19.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5716" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sea Ray Boats (Company)">Sea Ray</a> before testing the waters of the large yacht market with a 25.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/88403/image/large-74ccf9101d1a43a3c0903dd8acbc53d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/88403">In 1995, Glidewell took the official leap into superyacht ownership with the purchase of the 28-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> motor yacht Voyager (built in 1985 and now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8085" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Flying Dutchman 28.04m (91'12&quot;)Heesen Yachts1985">The Flying Dutchman</a>). A dedicated father of four, the entire family spends several weeks a year on the water, with each boat also listed on the charter market. "We bought <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zoom Zoom Zoom49.07m (160'12&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2005">Zoom Zoom Zoom</a> in 2015 and did work on her in 2017," Glidewell says. "I've always liked the way that the aft decks are set up on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinitys</a>, as well as the typical side stateroom with the master suite and nine-foot ceilings. My gosh, they are great for charter, and I love the boat."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/72188/image/large-67f2a9d45d3b4c7c973d1c05ab3051da.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/72188">Regardless of running a successful charter operation, having a young family, it turns out, is the real driving force behind the last 10-15 years of yachting for Glidewell. "We cruise the North East from Maine to Florida in the summer and spend the winters in Fort Lauderdale with quick trips out to the Bahamas," he says. "I'm into boating mainly because of my kids. If I didn't have young children to share all of this with I would not be into yachting as much as I am. Well... maybe just a little bit."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/72187/image/large-cc7fb396eee2eb8dbb635850e17827d3.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/72187">Covering up to 75% of operating costs by chartering his yachts with his trusted brokerage firm, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a>, he explains: "I charter because it makes it more affordable, and I charter because it makes my crew sharper and allows them to make more money. I've always owned boats, and I take the beating - I have a large enough company that it doesn't bother me that much. It is a benefit for my children. But I strongly believe in charter as a yacht owner. It also offers my crew a chance to make excellent money on tips. Chartering keeps the crew active, whereas if you have a boat that just sits at a dock until the owner is on board, the crew can go stale. They start losing interest. On a charter boat, you've got to keep everything at 100% all of the time."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/72192/image/large-1a7ea97669288f83f4e82170ceb8f842.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/72192">And, according to Glidewell, there has been no better time to be in the yacht charter game. With the Covid-19 pandemic restricting travel, movement and daily life around the world, the isolation and privacy that a yacht charter delivers are all the more attractive. "The charter market in the US is definitely up," says Glidewell. "Boats are chartering in the New England area where I am right now that would never usually charter up here. People want to get out of their houses; they want to escape the restrictions. We had three cancellations in July and August, and every one of them got filled back in. It just shows you how much demand there is. It's been a busy year here. When it comes to superyacht cruising grounds, sometimes it may be easy to forget that there is a big wide world to discover outside of the hustle and bustle of the main Mediterranean and Caribbean hotspots. With more and more owners and charter clients opting to stray a little further from the beaten track, here we shine a spotlight on some of the more exciting cruising destinations from all four corners of the world, with the help of the experts who have fallen in love with it. In this issue, we speak with Chris Fagan, Captain of the 39.6-metre Westport-built superyacht Serengeti, who takes us through his ideal week-long itinerary cruising the awe-inspiring fjord-riddled waters of Alaska.Take me to... Alaska<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/30829/image/large-682bac55f65b23c2372e9657d35a33af.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/30829">I’m Captain Chris Fagan, and I’ve been at the helm of the 39.6-metre Westport yacht Serengeti for the past two years. Before making Captain, I worked on the boat for an additional two years as the First Mate, so I’m happy to say that I know Serengeti inside and out and I still love living and working on board as much as ever! We’re a US-flagged yacht, and our owner loves cruising the States, so our typical charter itinerary consists of heading up to Alaska to start the season, stopping in San Francisco and Seattle on the way before we arrive in Juneau in late May. Once the season is over in August, we go back down the coast to California and occasionally go down into Mexico.&nbsp;We’ve basically done the same itinerary for the past 11 years, so myself, the crew and the yacht are all well seasoned Alaska-expeditioners. We really love Alaska. I think that folks cannot really understand this place until they’ve been there themselves. It sounds cliche, but it’s true! It’s like Jurassic Park - the wildlife really is spectacular, you just keep on cruising from one incredible spot to the next. You can spot a group of orcas and follow them for a while, you can see 50’ humpback whales fully breaching out of the water - who will even hang out with the boat for a while! - bears prowling through the forests, and the fishing is just like nowhere else on the planet. It’s explosive.&nbsp;The extreme beauty of the landscape matches the extreme wildlife. It’s not long, rolling plains, but giant mountains violently jutting out of the water and rising up for thousands of feet. There are also glaciers upon glaciers which are super cool to be able to see from the boat. They vary in size and colour, but are all immediately awe-inspiring. There are not many vacations which offer such sights from the comfort you find on Serengeti. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/30827/image/large-71392388921e2f3fc7cdf566619b0827.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/30827">There isn’t much civilisation between the major towns… it’s 75% national park so you can’t build on a lot of the land in southern Alaska. If you’re a client looking to escape the yacht for a couple of nights for the best fine dining… well, you won’t be able to find it here. But when we start or end our trip at Sitka, there is a particularly amazing restaurant that we always recommend to our guests. It’s really wonderful. The thing is, the food on the yacht is generally 10 times better than Alaskan cuisine!In terms of charter, we’re always booked by brokers because of our experience in the region, which is a super important element of cruising in Alaska. I genuinely think that if your mind is open to exploration, Alaska is for you. Some of our guests can be a little apprehensive about the weather before the trip, especially when they see the foul weather gear we have on board! But if it’s raining and you have that gear on, all the awesome stuff still happens, you just need to have a slight sense of adventure. So, without further ado, here’s just one of the sample itineraries we offer for making the most of your time in Alaska.Day 1 Fly into Juneau to meet Serengeti. A historic capital, enjoy your first afternoon soaking in the city’s local culture or take a tram 1,800’ up Mount Roberts. Later, cruise away from civilisation to a quiet bay for the evening. Before the sun sets, set crab traps to be pulled in the morning.Day 2<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/30819/image/large-8185c1f47c15ad39c1e0ca9adc0aaf96.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/30819">Spend your morning catching Alaskan Dungeness crabs from the traps set the night before. After crabbing, go ashore to the local village of Hoonah, which originated in 1800 when the North West Trading Company built a trading post there. Later, cruise a few hours south looking for whales on our way to a protected anchorage. This sheltered spot is ripe for an Alaskan-style crab cookout featuring your daily catch!Day 3 Enjoy your breakfast while anchored out beside the beautiful waterfall looking for bears walking along the waterline. Go ashore for Baranof Warm Springs where at the end of the boardwalk hike, you will find yourself in front of the exceptionally beautiful Baranof Lake. Once back on board, cruise farther south along Baranof Island, through a narrow cut, to anchor for the evening.Day 4 Shrimping, fishing, bear viewing, whale watching, and hiking are just a few of the activities to keep you busy as you continue to explore the beautiful and remote area of Southeastern Alaska on the fourth day of the journey.&nbsp;Day 5<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/30823/image/large-7238e480d179f5ab2e595392bf3fa910.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/30823">In the morning, you will travel to the south end of Admiralty Island. This is the perfect spot to cast a line for salmon and halibut in this world-class fishing spot. Once you’ve reeled in the daily catch, the chef will prepare it for dinner. The area is home to a wide variety of sea life; tender around the bay in search of seals and sea lions.Day 6&nbsp; Spend your morning whale watching in Frederick Sound, a favourite feeding ground for humpbacks. Be on the lookout for wildlife, especially brown bears that feed on the salmon that run in the area. Drop anchor and head ashore for a beautiful Alaskan sunset.Day 7<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/30824/image/large-b192c31d171084f952c15136f3d3fe5b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/30824">Enjoy breakfast as you cruise through the passage of the Tracy Arm fjord. The twin Sawyer glaciers can be found here. Take the tender past the awe-inspiring north Sawyer glacier and keep an eye out for the array of wildlife that call this area home, including seals, Orcas, Dall’s porpoise, eagles, even mountain goats.Day 8 Cruise through Stephen’s Passage to the Gastineau Channel at sunrise before arriving back in Juneau. A lack of infrastructure in combination with sparsely populated lands means planning ahead, but with proper due diligence and a great crew guiding your way, this region promises unforgettable sights and experiences. Here are some top tips.You need a permit to fish&nbsp;Everyone wants to fish in Alaska, but many do not realise that fishing is very regulated in Alaskan waters. Though regimented, going through the proper legal issues with the official system means that you’ll be making all the big catches your heart desires. Bypass the system and all you’ll end up with is a big fine.&nbsp;Plan for rainAlaska weather can be temperamental. The upside is that the weather does not affect what you want to be doing. The wildlife is still there and the fishing, in particular, is just like nowhere else. The scenery is unbelievable even if you are are a little bit damp and chilly at times!&nbsp;It’s not easy for every yachtCruising in US waters can be a headache for those yachts not built in the US or US-flagged, and foreign-flagged yachts may need an expensive navigational guide on board. Make sure you’re fully up to date with the latest rules before heading out into the wilderness. With Miami International Boat Show only a few weeks past, and the excitement of Palm Beach coming up in two weeks' time, it is the perfect time to take a look into the latest issue of the SuperYacht Times newspaper: the USA Issue.
