Captain Harold Onel stands as a seasoned veteran in the superyacht industry. His passion for yachting dates back to his childhood. His professional journey, marked by an ascent from engineer to captain, is replete with a wealth of experiences and tales. These adventures range from deep sea fishing off the coast of West Africa on the 28.74-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/104" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jongert Yachts (Company)">Jongert</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue Fascination 28.74m (94'3&quot;)Jongert Yachts1988">Blue Fascination</a> to navigating the inland canals of the Netherlands. After several encounters, Harold, a tall and well-built figure, agreed to engage in a more detailed conversation over a meal. Over a simple dish of pasta with broccoli, Harold opened up about his life and career, offering insights into the qualities that define a superyacht captain.Delving into his past, Harold reminisced about his early fascination with speed. He fondly recalled, “In my late teens, I owned a small 4.5-metre motorboat and vividly remember racing against a much larger motor yacht. That yacht, equipped with twin 300 horsepower engines, was exceptionally fast for her time”. Unlike his peers, Harold often found himself immersed in yachting magazines, absorbing every detail about the power of various yacht engines and frequently dreaming of one day piloting these swift vessels himself.While pursuing his studies in nautical engineering, Harold’s fascination with superyacht engineering intensified. He would often reach out to shipyards, eager to witness yacht launches firsthand. A standout memory for him was attending the launches of the 65.15-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/589" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cedar Sea II65.15m (213'9&quot;)Feadship1986">Cedar Sea II</a> and the 49.47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2094" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Highlander49.47m (162'4&quot;)Feadship1986">Highlander</a>, originally owned by Malcolm Forbes, in 1986.Harold then made a pivotal decision to leave his studies just before his final exams, drawn by an opportunity to work as an engineer on a 1958 23-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/11" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Vries Lentsch (Company)">De Vries Lentsch</a> motor yacht, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7815" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sealord23.02m (75'6&quot;)De Vries Lentsch1958">Sealord</a>. While the captain focused on the sails, I took the helm for navigation”.Harold’s transition to becoming a captain was catalysed by an opportunity from John Ter Haak, a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> distributor in the Netherlands, who visited Harold's parents' shop. Ter Haak offered Harold the chance to captain his 12-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> motor yacht on a voyage from Amsterdam to Port Zeelander. Navigating through inland canals and rivers, this journey marked Harold's inaugural experience as a captain. Following this, Harold's involvement with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> deepened, frequently navigating their yachts from the UK to the Netherlands as a cost-effective alternative to ferry transport.In discussing his inaugural experience as a superyacht captain, Harold shared the story of how his first superyacht captaincy was on the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9962" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Issue 27.25m (89'5&quot;)Moonen Yachts2001">My Issue&nbsp;</a>. The owner presented him with a straightforward offer, entrusting him with the command of the vessel. He noticed a sense of unrest among the crew, stirred by the guests' behaviour. Harold then emphasised that a critical skill for a superyacht captain is mastering the art of navigating such complex dynamics. “The key is maintaining composure,” he asserted. “Regardless of the situation's intensity, a captain and their crew must always present a calm façade. It's imperative for the clients, who are paying for the charter, to remain blissfully unaware of any underlying tensions”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/53340/image/large-3cc3a943c9e68b3ae044a3a1f4551aa3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53340">Harold then underscored the critical importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere onboard, highlighting crew cohesion as fundamental. He would champion inclusive practices to achieve this, advocating for the equitable distribution of tips. “Involving everyone is essential, from the captain to junior positions,” he stated. “Fair allocation of gratuities is paramount. In today's context, a captain's responsibilities cover a broader spectrum, including meticulous bookkeeping and managing high-value luxury assets, highlighting the multifaceted nature of modern superyacht captaincy.Currently, Harold dedicates his time to conducting sea trials for both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a>. However, he retains his passion for sailing and intends to return to. Interestingly, he is now actively working on obtaining the necessary certifications to navigate inland waters. “I will sail again,” he maintains, signalling his ongoing commitment to the water.

As the curtain has been drawn on this year’s summer season and superyachts start looking to warmer climates to spend the upcoming winter months, many vessels head into hibernation where they spend the cold season receiving maintenance after an intense cruising period. Several yachts have already headed north for such refit work and the Netherlands each year draws many high profile vessels during the maintenance season.&nbsp;One of the Netherlands’ largest players in the refit segment, Balk Shipyard, recently welcomed the 47-metre Benetti motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Africa I47.0m (154'2&quot;)">Africa I</a> for a short maintenance period after the yacht has spent its summer cruising Northern Europe. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Africa I47.0m (154'2&quot;)">Africa I</a>&nbsp;is expected to depart the shipyard again before the first snowfall is to hit the town of Urk when she will head south for warmer waters.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/52600/image/large-feb71c904a280d24c492015578915a8b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/52600">The 60-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2028" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ramble On Rose59.5m (195'3&quot;)">Ramble on Rose</a> from CRN is currently at Icon Yachts in Harlingen where she will remain until 1st April 2019. Works will include a complete exterior paint job and several changes to her interior including an upgraded bridge. A show that seems to be growing in popularity each year, it might come as a surprise to some that this year will be the 32nd annual edition of the Palm Beach International Boat Show. Kicking off on Thursday 23rd March, the event runs until Sunday 26th March and will feature more than $1.2 billion worth of yachts, boats, and fine accessories. Moonen Shipyards in the Netherlands has a new majority shareholder who has committed to invest in the long-term future of the Dutch superyacht builder. Late September, Moonen Shipyards in the Netherlands launched the 42-metre luxury motoryacht Sofia. After three days of extensive trials, the largest custom Moonen motoryacht to date has achieved some quite remarkable results in terms of noise and vibration levels. The 42-metre Sofia, which also features a three-man submarine, achieved Class 1 status within the Passenger and Crew Accommodation Comfort notation from the Lloyd's Register rules and regulations for Special Service Craft. This impressive technical achievement within the parameters of the SSC Rules was measured by the specialist noise and vibration testing company Intersona. The noise levels allowed for a superior stateroom on a superyacht are 50 dB. The tests recorded that Sofia's staterooms were as low as 40 dB in some places and the sound levels never exceeded 46 dB at 12 knot cruising speed. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141891/image/large-7c17e9735e2c5716cf43cedaa715e164.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141012">A similar achievement was noted in the lounge, where the measurements again showed that the sound levels were 4 to 5 dB lower then the figure required to reach Class 1 status. The noise levels were even lower in the wheelhouse, coming in at 45 dB in an area where 60 dB is still considered comfortable enough for Class 1. The vibration tests showed an even more remarkable performance. In the staterooms and lounges a maximum vibration level of 0.3 to 0.4 mm/sec. was recorded (compared to an acceptable Class 1 level of 1.8), while the public spaces of the superyacht were measured at 0.4 (compared to an acceptable Class 1 level of 2.5). "These low noise and vibration levels are a testimony to the engineering work that went into the design of this custom vessel as well as the phenomenal construction skills of the craftsmen here at our yard," commented Emile Bilterijst, managing director of Moonen Shipyards. "What made these results even more special at the time they were measured was that the owner was onboard. This allowed him to hear and feel for himself the quality and comfort levels that he can expect in the years ahead." The owner was also delighted with the interior. An extraordinarily bright and open feeling is generated by the large windows and the styling by Art-Line Interiors, which features oak wood, Zabrano and Concetto marble. Executed with a custom piece of Concetto art made and supplied by Ceaser Stone in Israel, Sofia's atrium is spectacular. And the interior is a technical masterpiece too, with an integrated foil bridge and a full Kaleidoscope video server with multi-room control (including lighting, blinds and climate control) via i-Pad. Moonen achieves exceptional noise and vibration results

Moonen Shipyards in the Netherlands launched the 42-metre luxury motoryacht Sofia in September, and have just release the first interior photos. The interior, designed by Art-Line, features oak wood and Zabrano, and has an open feeling, with large windows bathing the living spaces with lots of light. Interior 42 metre superyacht Sofia unveiled

Moonen Shipyards in the Netherlands have launched the 42-metre luxury motoryacht Sofia. As is the case with any genuinely custom project, changes and additions were still being made right up to the launch, meeting the owner’s requirements in every respect. Moonen sells fourth Moonen 97

Moonen Shipyards in the Netherlands has announced that its largest project to date, which was originally slated to be 133 feet in length, has been extended by a further four feet. The fully customised 42 metre Moonen will now carry a submarine that is capable of seating three passengers instead of the originally specified two. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/134703/image/large-e464e9d23313f1014ff7bfec3a99fa20.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131629">With its increased length, this custom-built Moonen will make history by being the first luxury motoryacht in this size range to carry a fully fledged submarine for three people. With the option to reach a depth of 100 metres, the submarine will be secured on the swim platform and will be launched and recovered by an integrated crane, which also serves as a docking bay for the tenders. Three-seater sub leads to extension of 42 metre Moonen

Superyachts TV and Sofia II in Sint Maarten

Moonen Shipyards in The Netherlands has signed the contract for its largest superyacht to date, the Moonen 133. Engineering has already started on this impressive order by a repeat client who has already owned a Moonen 84 and a Moonen 97. When launched in 2012 this will be the smallest luxury motoryacht ever to carry a submarine for 2 persons and 100 metres depth. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131629/image/large-45a854b2c93622e9e4deeaf6bfcb6e40.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131629">The Moonen 133 can be described as ‘a cross-over of a cross-over’, blending rugged adventurous looks with modern superyacht stylishness and classic elements. This exceptionally elegant explorer has a low profile, excellent sea handling performance and a very long range. The Moonen design team was responsible for the overall design concept, with René van der Velden adding his delicate touch to the styling. The owner has also combined his wish for a larger yacht with a desire to stay within a length that allows access to small places. In doing so, the Moonen 133 remains a family boat that does not need an excessive number of crew, normal use 6 crew, with option for 7. Thanks to the surprising amount of volume for a 40-metre yacht, there is room for six spacious guest cabins. The Moonen 133 has a high bow and full-beam master suite forward. A large area is set aside on the wheelhouse deck to stow a giant tender, launched by a powerful centreline crane that will allow the crew to deploy the boat over either side. There will also be a submarine stored on deck, which will be launched by a hydraulic ramp. Once the submarine is in the water an immense swim platform opens up to offer maximum watersports entertainment. This concept is supported by the large lazarette, which is ideal for carrying fishing, diving gear and motorbikes. The interior will have an open feeling, with large windows bathing the living spaces with lots of light. Artline will provide the interior styling, the third time this leading Dutch studio has worked with the owner.
