An assessment of the damaged yacht found that her steel frames were plagued by rust and rot, making it unclear whether <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shamrock V36.58m (120'0&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1930">Shamrock V</a>’s original materials could be salvaged. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311966/image/large-995fa295c3b2b48488ebef84084f01f3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311966">In the seven years that followed, the vessel, which received a new owner in 2022, was stripped down completely, and restored by skilful shipwrights, engineers and project teams.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311967/image/large-9d338b39bb4887449e56f151db47b1e2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311967">The impressive, historic restoration saw more than 95 percent of her original teak that was installed during a re-planking in 1970 has been removed and refitted, and 70 percent of the mechanical systems onboard were reconditioned. During ocean crossings, he dedicates time to teach navigation skills and willingly imparts his knowledge to anyone with questions.&nbsp;Simon's also actively contributes to the broader yachting community. Serving as a second engineer has provided me with a robust background in electronics, IT, and engineering.&nbsp;This technical expertise extends beyond the comfort aspects of a yacht; it's about understanding the intricate technicalities. This engineering focus is crucial because it allows me to better interpret an owner's desires. We've also successfully secured the Central Agency for the subsequent nine hulls.What emerging trends in yacht sales have you seen over the past six months?There is a noticeable trend leaning towards catamarans, and at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/136" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Independence (Company)">Ocean Independence</a>, we're actively involved in a project with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> that is currently in the build phase. It's amusing to reflect on my previous experience working on catamarans, like Necker Belle, back when they were not as mainstream. Now, we're witnessing an increasing presence of catamarans in the market. Is this emphasis on sustainability a response to the evident costs associated with conventional approaches? Incidents involving the malicious throwing of hardware paint on superyachts have rendered them vulnerable, compelling owners to be concerned about the security of their vessels even within supposedly secure marinas. Consequently, the urgency to adopt greener alternatives has gained significant traction.Finally, personally, if you could invest in a yacht, what would you choose and why?If I were to invest in a yacht, my preferences would vary for different reasons. In England this week, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit Yachts Ltd (Company)">Spirit Yachts</a> completed and delivered the 33.9-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7109" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Geist33.9m (111'3&quot;)Spirit Yachts Ltd2020">Geist.</a> The sloop-rigged yacht is the largest single-masted wooden sailing yacht to be built in the UK since <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shamrock V36.58m (120'0&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1930">Shamrock V</a> in the 1930s. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169955/image/large-8366f7b8c23316306f3322eccc831ac8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169955"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169984/image/large-a51d5d418653aefc48bbcf399b663548.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169984">Her owner requested that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit Yachts Ltd (Company)">Spirit Yachts</a> built one of the most environmentally-friendly sailing superyachts in the world fleet today. Making the owner's request a reality along with owner's representative and project manager Jens Cornelsen of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2548" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cornelsen & Partner Yacht Consulting GmbH (Company)">Cornelsen &amp; Partner</a>, the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit Yachts Ltd (Company)">Spirit Yachts</a> installed a battery/shore powered air conditioning unit and water systems that only heats water on demand. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169838/image/large-db1e30fb9adb9f59b2687b29755ccd5e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169838"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169824/image/large-f835f268ca46d6ef83eaca5271475065.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169824">The Spirit 111 is also one of few superyachts capable of cruising without professional crew thanks to her hydraulic deck hardware, sails made from recycled materials that can be operated via the carbon fibre mast and in-boom furling for short-handed sailing. A Torqeedo electric propulsion system will propel the yacht silently for up to 30nm at 8-knots from battery power alone. Rhoades Young partner Jonathan Rhoades commented: “The brief was a combination of his love for furniture and organic architecture. The client had recently visited Antelope Canyon in Arizona and this was the catalyst for the idea of the warm soft flowing walls creating unique focal points within the room. Whilst appearing simple these twisting forms are co-ordinated perfectly with the beautiful skylights above creating a calm and tranquil ambience. These elegant forms not only twist and peel to create counters but uniquely create the intimate backdrops for the highly detailed ‘steam pieces’ which blur the line between furniture and sculpture. It has been an absolute privilege to work on this project with the client and the craftsmen and women who created it.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169808/image/large-6ddc06d841350af44f8cf6de05d37ea9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169808">With exposed Sipo, teak and American Walnut timbers on show, the interior plan includes an open-plan saloon and galley, discreet doors and lighting systems both with sensor-activated operation. For accommodation, guests have the choice of two double ensuite aft staterooms or a starboard-side double VIP cabin. The forward cabin holds the spacious master suite, complete with curved sofas built into the side of the hull, a double bed and ensuite. &nbsp;Rhoades Young designer Marcus Wright added: “It was a great privilege to represent the owner’s interests and ensure we delivered a yacht that surpassed his expectations. &nbsp;With the knowledge that Spirit Yachts can make absolutely anything in wood, it was a thoroughly enjoyable process to take Rhoades Young’s beautiful interpretation of an unusual brief and assist in the creation of such a work of art.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83916/image/large-3df2cfd70a54d3fa70226ab2959ff431.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83916">

Spirit Yachts delivers 34m eco-sailing yacht Geist

In England this week, Spirit Yachts delivered 34m eco-sailing yacht Geist.

In 1929, Montague Stanley Napier placed an order for a new 58.83-metre steel superyacht at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/192" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> shipyard, but passed away before he could take delivery during 1931. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/534" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marala58.83m (193'0&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1931">Marala</a> then was sold to aeroplane builder Sir Richard Fairey, who named the yacht Evadne. Her current interiors reflect her classic exterior look and feature teak furniture, silk wall coverings and polished brass – all of which will remain classic but be revitalised by London-based design studio Muza Lab. As part of our history series from revered in-house yacht historian, Malcolm Wood, we take a closer look at yacht builders that are, for one reason or another, no longer in existence. Across the next two issues, we explore the Camper &amp; Nicholsons shipyard of Gosport and Southampton in the UK. In this first instalment, we delve into the sailing yachts of the yard. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45788/image/large-95e8c10229d15656bf62337401da4805.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45788">Camper &amp; Nicholsons were one of the earliest builders of yachts greater than 30-metres in length. The company also developed into one of the world’s most prominent yacht builders over the years, completing well over 2,000 vessels of all sizes. Owing to the large numbers of yachts involved, it is for this reason that we’ve decided to cover this prolific builder in two parts.The origins of the yard lie in one Francis C. Amos, a London born shipyard apprentice who in 1782 signed an agreement to lease the disused Charles Fort at Gosport, the site at which most of the company’s yachts would be built in future years. In 1809, William Camper, a great nephew of Amos, was apprenticed to his great uncle and following the death of Francis Amos in 1824, the control of the yard passed to William Camper.The first large yacht built by Campers was a 327-ton brigantine named Anonyma, launched in 1839 for the Royal Yacht Squadron member Colonel Greville. A succession of sailing yachts over 100-tons for both cruising and racing were built in the following two decades.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45789/image/large-ec4c5eb1372fc46fcaf3f1e344031da5.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45789">The Nicholson name first made an appearance in 1842 when Ben Nicholson was indentured as an apprentice shipwright to the Camper yard. Prior to William Camper’s death in 1863 he had written in his will that he wanted Ben Nicholson to take control of the yard together with one of his grandsons as a partner when he reached a mature age. The company would now be known as Camper &amp; Nicholson.One of the most famous racing yachts of this era was the 206-ton schooner Aline, built in 1860 for Charles S. Thellusson, one of the company’s most important clients. No less than 72 sailing yachts over 30-metres LOA were delivered from 1839 to 1914. Shamrock IV 1914 was Sir Thomas Lipton’s America’s Cup challenger in 1920 but lost to Resolute and was later broken up in 1932. Five of the 72 are still in service: Amphitrite of 1887, Black Swan (ex: Brynhild) of 1899, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5041" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Merrymaid34.75m (114'0&quot;)">Merrymaid</a> of 1904, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5039" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Joyette32.3m (105'12&quot;)">Joyette</a> (ex: Almara) of 1907 and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4394" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Orion of the Seas49.29m (161'9&quot;)">Orion</a> (ex: Sylvana) of 1910. Of these, Amphitrite is now a German registered sail training vessel whilst the other four are still private yachts.Following WWI, steam and motor yachts became the priority for the yard although several large sailing yachts were still being constructed. These were <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sylvia43.6m (143'1&quot;)">Sylvia</a> in 1925, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creole65.3m (214'3&quot;)">Vira</a> in 1927, Panope in 1928, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5042" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Astra35.0m (114'10&quot;)">Astra</a> in 1928, Ailée II in 1928, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4885" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Candida39.65m (130'1&quot;)">Candida</a> in 1929, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shamrock V36.58m (120'0&quot;)">Shamrock V</a> in 1930, Sonia II in 1931, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5040" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Saharet of Tyre32.43m (106'5&quot;)">Saharet</a> in 1933, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Velsheda39.4m (129'3&quot;)">Velsheda</a> in 1933,&nbsp;Endeavour I in 1934, Endeavour II in 1936, Panda in 1938 and Blanche-Neige in 1939.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45790/image/large-7e2737a3a194fd03f59622194ca20b8a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45790">Of these, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creole65.3m (214'3&quot;)">Vira</a> - better known as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creole65.3m (214'3&quot;)">Creole</a> today - was the largest with a length overall of 63.03-metres and a TM tonnage of 697. T.O.M. Sopwith’s Endeavour I is well known today, whilst Endeavour II&nbsp;was converted to a yawl and was eventually dismantled in 1963.Sonia II, owned by UK powerboat racer Betty Carstairs, was converted to a banana carrier in 1944 whilst Ailée II owned by French yachtswoman Virginie Heriot ended up in the French Navy’s Ecole Naval de Brest as a training vessel. Panda was seriously damaged by fire at St. Martin in 1984 and was later towed to Florida and scuttled in 1988.Let’s now look at C&amp;N’s post-WWII large sailing yacht construction.The first large sailing yacht constructed post-WWII was a 35-metre ketch named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2222" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aries35.0m (114'10&quot;)">Aries</a> for W.J. Reynolds of the USA, delivered in 1953. This was followed by another ketch of 30.2-metres, Miguy III, and delivered to Comte Guy du Boisrouvray in 1960. This yacht was originally ordered for King Faisal II of Iraq who was assassinated in a coup d’etat before she was completed.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45787/image/large-db70b8e1ec66083603d788b639ea1874.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45787">The yard was very busy with small production-line sailing yachts and it wasn’t until 1979 that another large sailing yacht of 30.54-metres was completed. This sloop-rigged motorsailer named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5037" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Calabuig30.54m (100'2&quot;)">Calabuig</a> was of alloy construction and was built for an Italian owner.Another decade was to pass before the Ron Holland designed sloop Royal Eagle II of 30.5-metres was delivered to her American owner in 1989. Just three more large sailing yachts would emerge from the yard in the 1990s, namely the Rob Humphreys/John Munford designed ketch Cyrano de Bergerac of 39-metres in 1993 for a repeat Italian owner, followed by the Bill Dixon/Terence Disdale designed schooner Yanneke Too of 35.9-metres for a US-based Swiss banker in 1995, and finally the 37-metre Ed Dubois designed sloop&nbsp;Our Blue Dream for a Russian owner in 1999.In our next issue, we’ll look at the steam and motor yachts built by Camper &amp; Nicholsons and add some more facts about this leading yacht builder. The ghost of yards past: Camper & Nicholsons - Part I

Based on one of the most southernmost tips of Britain, nestled away in the beautifully sleepy and surprisingly beautiful town of Falmouth, is Pendennis. A shipyard that has been in the game for over three decades, their portfolio consists of some of the most technically challenging yet rewarding transformation projects, impressive refit projects, and an array of new build superyachts - both motor and sail - that are destined to be sailing the Seven Seas for years to come. With a substantial investment in facilities over the past few years, the sheds at Pendennis are full to capacity with no quiet period looming on the horizon. So, we asked joint Managing Director, Henk Wiekens - what’s the secret to success?

Born in Holland, Wiekens journey to Pendennis started in the late 60s, just north of Amsterdam. Working for a small local shipyard, he learned his boat building skills at a relatively early age and by 1978, at the tender age of 25, he made the leap to building his own boats with a friend. Working with a similarly aged client, together his partner and himself built a small ketch from scratch - a ketch that went on to sail the world - and he was hooked. Moving to New Zealand together with their families in the early 80s, Wiekens continued to build boats - successfully.

So successfully in fact that what would become the Pendennis yard we know today invited Wiekens over to Falmouth to contribute to a small project. Accepting the invite from Peter de Savary - owner at the time - the initial invitation soon developed into a little more than originally anticipated: “Pendennis were building a couple of 12-metres for the Blue Arrow campaign in the summer of ‘88. During that time it became clear that the 12-metre market was gone for the America’s Cup. They then wanted to go into the superyacht business, so I was invited to set up the yard here and to take care of the construction of the first yacht, the 37-metre Taramber (now La Cattiva)... It was supposed to be a period of 18 months but, as you can see, I’m still here!”

One of the contributing factors to the permanent extension of Wiekens stay in Falmouth was the introduction to Mike Carr, six months after landing in the UK. Carr, who had worked with Vosper Thornycroft for a number of years, came from a more formally trained background in naval architecture and with an entirely different approach to business. It was in 1993 when Wiekens and Carr decided to take the leap with a management buyout, helped by De Savary. Now, they are - perhaps rather unusually - joint Managing Directors, an arrangement that continues to work to this day.

One of the principle elements of future proofing in recent years is most definitely the significant investment in the development of the yard’s facilities. Coming in at an eye-watering £24,000,000 and taking a number of years, Pendennis increased their capacity with three new sheds for new build and refit projects from 30 to 100 metres, as well as an enclosed yacht basin. The tangible benefits of such was immediately tasted at the yard, when the largest project ever to come to Pendennis, Aquila, in the summer of 2015, was apparently eager to be the first to experience the new and improved Pendennis shipyard. “After we increased our facilities we were taken to the test quite quickly,” Wiekens reminisces, “basically the concrete of the new facilities was still curing when she came in!”

Though Aquila is one of the most important projects undertaken at Pendennis in recent years, Wiekens warmly remembers an altogether different project some 20 years previous, a project in which he attributes to the possibility of essential growth and development at the company. It was 1995 when the 1903 schooner Adela was first welcomed into the Pendennis family. “Adela has fantastic owners and for me personally Adela will always have a big soft spot because she made so many things possible,” he says. “That’s the same with Rebecca and Adix as well. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to be so heavily involved from the word go, and working with the owners on that. These boats are landmarks.”

The design challenge presented by Adela was to incorporate every conceivable modern yacht system and convenience into the interior without losing the je ne sais quoi of the original W.C. Storey design. Today, Adela cuts a classic profile blending traditional fittings with modern technology within her sumptuous interior as well as on deck. Since her initial restoration Adela has returned to the yard for remodelling work in 2000, during which she had a 5-metre mid-ship's hull extension, and for routine maintenance refits at both Pendennis facilities in Falmouth and Palma in 2006, 2012 and 2015. Speaking fondly of the project, Wiekens says, “A boat like Adela, 1903, a lot of purists had a lot of criticisms at the time, but since she left the yard in 1996, she’s done so many miles and the owners have so much fun with it. Adela really has been all around the world and races and sails… It really has been great.”

But it’s not just beautiful classic sailing boats that comprise Pendennis’ refit and transformation portfolio (though there are a fair few, the 1928 Fair Lady and 1930’s-built Shamrock V both from Camper &amp; Nicholsons as well as the 1915 Herreshoff-built Mariette of 1915), and they are no strangers to large, modern superyachts. One of the most recent examples is undoubtedly the aforementioned 85.6-metre Aquila (ex; Cakewalk), which was redelivered to her owners in summer 2016.

The largest yacht to grace the yard - made possible of course by that substantial investment that proves to be reaping the rewards - and the largest refit project ever undertaken in the UK to date, the scope of the project at hand was daunting to say the least. A complete revitalisation of all five deck levels required the interiors on board to be stripped back to bulkheads across most areas, and saw the addition of a 60 square metre private deck area, a complete repaint, extensive technological upgrades and the rebuild of four generators - and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The result is, what the company believes, a new benchmark for large refit yacht programmes, a statement that would be hard to argue with.

Even though many in the industry have now come to automatically associate the Pendennis yard with refit and rebuilds, there are still plenty of new builds in Pendennis’ portfolio, including the largest privately owned luxury sailing catamaran in the world, the 44.2-metre Hemisphere, the 55-metre explorer yacht Steel (which was back home in the yard at the time of writing boasting a brand new paint job), and the 46-metre Ron Holland designed ketch, Christopher. Commenting on this assumption, Wiekens states, “We certainly do have more of a reputation now as a refit yard because more boats come through the yard, but for us, the big business plan was always a mix of both: new build and refit.”

So with such a varied and impressive portfolio, what is the secret to this steady success over the past quarter century? Of course long term visions, future proofing the company with investment and development, an attractive offering to both new build and refit markets, all come into play. But one of the most important aspects of their secret to success is their commitment to people. During my time at the yard, I met people from all sides of the business: from MD, to Marketing Director, from Project Managers to apprentices. People who have been at the company for a matter of months, people who have been there since the very beginning, and from the atmosphere and the attitudes I was presented with, it was obvious: Pendennis care about the people that work for them.

The almost family like nature of the business of course makes logical business sense: happy employees equals increased productivity and a more dedicated, passionate work ethic, which of course then plays into the success of a project and the quality of the end result. And, realistically, this is probably a huge contributing factor when it comes to clients coming back again and again and again. Wiekens says: “What we’ve got here is a big variety of how you can do things differently and just give a personal touch. A yacht is not just a thing to have, it’s a thing they want to put their own creativity and energy into. Clients don’t need yachts, they want them. If the experience isn’t fun, then they will never see you again.”

So with nearly 30 years’ under their belt at the top, what’s next for Pendennis? “Mike and I are on the runners right now, not on the helm!” Wiekens laughs. “We’ve put ourselves in a position where whatever the market will do, we will be able to adapt to it very quickly, and it’s not dependent on Mike and I. We have set out a long term strategy - as you can see with the investment we have done - and that is not just for the next two years. We’re now set up knowledge and skills wise to easily continue for another 30 years. The long term strategy is for another two, three, four generations to continue with this company. Boats will be different by that time, but I think boats like Adela, for example, will still be around. They still need to be looked after over the years, but these are boats that are going to be timeless.” With passion and people at their core, Pendennis certainly looks set to stand the test of time.

A number of high profile sailing yachts have changed hands during the first six months of 2016. Here we take a look at just some of the largest and most recent of those sales.

Q (ex. Mondango)

The 52 metre sailng yacht Mondango (now named Q) was announced sold in March this year. Stockbridge Yacht Brokers and joint central agents Burgess having represented the owner, and Camper &amp; Nicholsons acting on behalf of the buyer. Originally built for an international businessman, Mondango was designed by Dubois Naval Architects as a high performance aluminium ketch with luxury world cruising in mind. Mondango features a modern and fresh interior, designed by Reymond Langton, which offers luxury accommodation for 10 guests. 

Twizzle

Y.CO secured the sale of the 57.5 metre sailng yacht Twizzle at the start of the year. Built by Royal Huisman in 2010, the iconic Twizzle features naval architecture by Dubois Naval Architects, and interior design by Redman Whiteley Dixon in collaboration with Todhunter Earle. Will Christie of Y.CO acted as Joint Central Agent in the sale with Burgess and Jim Wallace of Camper and Nicholsons International representing the buyer. At the time of sale she was listed at an asking price of €39,750,000.

Shamrock V

Edmiston also announced in March the sale of the 36.58 metre sailing yacht Shamrock V. Originally built in 1930 by Camper &amp; Nicholsons Shipyard for Sir. Thomas Lipton - the founder of Lipton tea - she is the only wooden J-Class yacht ever built. Shamrock V was sold with Edmiston representing both the buyer and the seller in the deal. At the time of sale she was listed at an asking price of €6,000,000.

In February Perini Navi USA announced the sale of the 38 metre sloop P2. Built by Perini Navi in 2008, P2 has an alloy hull and carbon superstructure and features naval architecture and exterior design by the renowned Philippe Briand. P2 was listed for sale at Perini Navi USA, with Perini Navi’s Bruce Brakenhoff representing both the buyer and the seller in the deal. At the time of sale, she was listed at an asking price of $9,900,000.

Yanneke Too

Sailing yacht Yanneke Too, a sleek 36 metre sailing yacht delivered by Camper &amp; Nicholsons in 1996, was sold in April this year after having been jointly listed for sale through Burgess and Yachtzoo with Ardell having introduced the buyer. Yanneke Too is designed by British designer Bill Dixon, and she was conceived for worldwide cruising. At the time of the sale her asking price was set at €1,800,000.

Jazz Jr.

The 32.8 metre sailing yacht Jazz Jr. was announced sold by Hoek Brokerage this week. built by Turquoise Yachts in 2009, the Hoek Designed yacht was on offer at an asking price of €3.800.000 at the time of the sale.

Timoneer

The 44m Dubois-designed Ketch Timoneer, built by Vitters in 2001, found a new owner earlier this month. The sale was announced by President of Perini Navi USA, Bruce Brakenhoff, having represented the seller along with Burgess as co-central agent with Pam Barlow of Luke Brown Yachts acting on behalf of the buyer. Timoneer’s asking price at the time of the sale was $8,250,000.

Cartouche

One of the largest sailing catamarans in North America was recently sold by Denison Yacht Sales. Built by Blue Coast Yachts in France, the 95-foot Cartouche was offered at an asking price of €4,450,000. The seller was represented by Catherine Relandeau (Cath Yachts) and Jean-Marie Cabri (Denison Yacht Sales) represented the buyer.

	Shamrock V has been well maintained throughout her lifetime, and features naval architecture and exterior design by Charles E. Nicholson. She underwent a refit in 2001 at Pendennis Shipyard, which saw Dykstra Naval Architects collaborate on her exterior and undertake her interior design in it’s entirety. Today, she accommodates up to eight guests over a luxurious four cabin layout.

Shamrock V was sold with Edmiston representing both the buyer and the seller in the deal. At the time of sale she was listed at an asking price of €6,000,000.

The 37m J-Class superyacht Shamrock V sold

The organisers of the 2017 America’s Cup being held in Bermuda have invited the J Class Association to participate in a J Class Regatta. Announcing they have accepted the invitation, the event will involve all eight J Class yachts, with a minimum of six anticipated to compete in the regatta. This will mark the first time in history that more than five J Class yachts have ever raced against each other.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152656/image/large-c1d270d15cf6631f8221e9e0e8c290d4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139043">Director of the America's Cup Event Authority (ACEA), Russell Coutts, commented, "The J Class era of the America's Cup is widely recognised as being among the high points in Cup history. Having the J Class join us in Bermuda will create a spectacular blend between the old and new."Berthed at the centre of the Race Village, the J Class fleet will showcase the heritage and tradition of the America's Cup. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup: sunny clime, rocky outcrops, ideal wind conditions and high-class sailing. 2013 marks the 24th edition of the world’s premiere rendezvous for Maxi yachts held in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. Five days of racing on the Costa Smeralda commences today with 37 eye-catching Maxi yachts (ranging from 60 to a gigantic 157-ft) negotiating an environment as challenging as it is dramatic.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/145550/image/large-0ca330816685d31ecc9c46ceb0dcd0d1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/145550">“The two things which make the event unique are the race courses and the participants,” explained Riccardo Bonadeo, Commodore of event organizers Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. “The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup from the very beginning has always been the event of excellence for ocean-going boats. The Class, governed by an owner/driver rule, is in the ascendancy with a host of yachts in contention this year. Ran 2 (GBR) won the first two editions in 2010 and 2011. She narrowly relinquished her title in 2012 on countback to Hap Fauth’s fellow 72-ft Bella Mente (USA). Understandably, Zennström and his crew are determined to reclaim their title. “The (Mini Maxi) boats are amazingly fun to sail. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup starts today

After 10 international events that attracted more than 600 classic sailing yachts, the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 2012 drew to a close with the 34th edition of the Régates Royales (25th-29th September) at Cannes. The stunning Cote d’Azur provided the backdrop as around 90 stunningly beautiful classic yachts did battle over four races held in very variable conditions that included rain and gusting winds, delivering some truly extraordinarily spectacular sailing in the process.  <div style="display: none;"> </div> <object class="BrightcoveExperience" id="myExperience1877048318001"><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF">

Since 2007, Moonbeam IV has won all of the leading classic sailing regattas in the Mediterranean including Antibes, Barcelona, Mahon and Cannes. In 2012, she took part in three stages of the circuit, on each occasion with a crew of around 30. She is a Q Class, a category of boats designed in line with the Universal Rule which was developed by American designer and builder Nathanael Herreshoff. This year, Leonore competed in all five stages of the Panerai circuit and she was helped to her overall class victory by a cruise of former America’s Cup champions that included the legendary Mauro Pelaschier, Mauro Piani and Daniele Gabrielli. Naïf had a crew of around 12 for this circuit. The overall winners of the Régates Royales itself were Thendara (Big Boats), Leonore (Vintage), Arcadia (Classics) and Catleya (Spirit of Tradition). Leonore, Naïf and Moonbeam IV triumph in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challange 2012

After 12 years as Secretary of the J Class Association, and the great success of the two UK J Class events this year, David Pitman is retiring from the role. This has been a fascinating era for the J Class, starting with the inaugural meeting of the Association in 2000. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140295/image/large-f5860bea9ef1205ea4d8d0fb536026d4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139470">David created the constitution and a set of rules that would defend the historic original yachts (Shamrock V, Velsheda, Endeavour) but would allow for the building of new yachts, to original hull lines plans. This led to interest in new projects. David is extremely proud of his role in assisting the development, build and launch of four new J’s - Ranger in 2002, Hanuman in 2009, Lionheart in 2010 and Rainbow in 2012. One more yacht is nearing completion at Holland Jachtbouw Shipyard, whilst two more have plans approved and are scheduled to start shortly. Few people can have such a lasting, visible legacy of their work with four new J Class yachts on the water and three more on the way. The two major UK regattas were a culmination of many years of planning, and he is delighted to have completed these events with such success, bringing four J Class yachts to the UK for the first time in over 70 years and putting on racing to rival the glory years of the 1930’s. Regatta organisation is a complex task, encompassing container movements, berthing for yachts and support ships, awareness of large crew requirements, plus all the onshore activities that make a successful event. In his last two years as J Class Secretary, David laid the foundations for future events at top sailing destinations around the world. His superyacht knowledge and contacts were invaluable in the formulation of these long-term plans. David leaves a legacy of a strong class association, comprehensive rules, accurate handicap and measuring systems, unique event trophies and seven J Class Yachts on the water, with more in construction and planning. David stated: “It has been my pleasure to work and sail with the J class fleet for more than 15 years, creating an environment where the Class can grow and flourish”. David Pitman retires as secretary of the J Class Association

The sailing calendar for classic yachts in the Mediterranean includes stops in idyllic ports including Antibes, Monaco, and Cannes. But it is the finale in St Tropez that is the not-to-be-missed conclusion for classic and modern yachts alike. This year Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez – which began life as La Nioulargue – marks the 30th running of this prestigious event. The nearly 300-boat regatta brings together the finest collection of traditional yachts (vintage and spirit of tradition), as well as the other end of the spectrum: modern high-performance racers. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136797/image/large-4da5e1b90897d88d96e4a34ba39e8c66.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136797">Yesterday was the first scheduled day of racing for the Modern fleet, with the light 6-8 knot conditions on the Golfe de St Tropez causing a delayed start, all classes managed one race today. Racing for the Tradition classes begins today. Les Voiles' fleet is divided into Modern and Traditional; with almost 200 boats, the Modern classes make up the majority. Boats such as Mike Slade’s 100-foot (30 metre) super maxi, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/314">Leopard 3</a>, which held the monohull course record in the Rolex Fastnet Race until this year; the impeccably restored 1930s-era J-Class <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276">Shamrock</a>; Swan yachts from the popular one-design Swan 42 to the Swan 112 <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1319">Highland Breeze</a>, as well as a good showing from the Wally fleet of 80 – 130 footers. But it is the Traditional fleet – 84-strong this year – that impresses. The “grande dame” of the fleet is the 136-foot (41.5m) Herreshoff schooner, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3188">Elena</a>. She is not alone among yachts over the 100-foot mark, joined by <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1818">Cambria</a>, the Fife-designed 23m class sloop; the Herreshoff schooner, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190">Mariette of 1915</a>, and the Fife gaff schooner, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2085">Altair</a>, which raced successfully for nearly 50 years before being brought back to impeccable condition in 1985 at Fairlie Restorations in the UK. Rounding out the ‘bigger’ boat fleet is the more recently launched <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2343">Sunshine</a>, built in out of teak and rosewood in Myanmar. Equally impressive are the 15-meter class yachts, the elegant Tuiga (1909) and Mariska (1908). Though 15 metres (50 feet) on the waterline, with their long bow and stern overhangs and bowsprit, they stretch to 90 stunning feet overall. Along with these two is the recently re-launched Fife III-designed 15-metre Hispania, originally built for the King of Spain in 1909 – but unfortunately the Spanish boat had to withdraw from Les Voiles. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136798/image/large-b2bb2be0852542526164cec55069b6a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136798">The idea for La Nioulargue is a now legendary story that took place in 1981 at Club 55, Patrice de Colmont’s ultra-chic beach bar and restaurant on Pampelonne Beach. It began as a casual barroom bet between the 12-metre Ikra, skippered by Jean Laurin and Pride, a Swan 44 owned by Dick Jayson, an American who was cruising in the Mediterranean at that time. Three decades later the regatta endures, with tweaks and fine-tuning along the way. In the late 1990s, La Niolargue morphed into Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez and its popularity has only grown. Ikra still competes here. Now owned by Frenchman Yves-Marie Morault, the 12-metre won the Rolex Trophy in 2010 and Morault and crew are back this year to defend. The Rolex Trophy is a competition within the Tradition division for all boats over 16 metres on deck. The winning boat receives the Rolex Trophy and a Rolex timepiece. First awarded in 2006, this year more than 50 boats are eligible for the Trophy, among these Graham Walker’s two-time winner Rowdy, a Herreshoff-designed New York 40. Past Rolex Trophy winners include: 2010 – Ikra, 12-metre. Originally built as Kurrewa V, a trial horse for the Royal Thames YC for the 1964 America’s Cup. Later owned by Baron Bich, who sold it in 1977, after which it was converted for racing/cruising in the Mediterranean. 2008 &amp; 2009 – Rowdy, Herreshoff-designed New York 40 class. Commissioned by the New York Yacht Club and built in 1916, this design is 40 feet on the waterline (approx 65 ft LOA). 2007 – Agneta, 25-metre yawl, built in 1951. Agneta’s beautiful varnished mahogany hull and tanbark sails are unmistakable on the water. 2006 – So Fong, 25 metre Marconi-rigged schooner. Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez celebrates 30 years

David Pitman, Secretary of the J Class Association announced that the first event in the J Class Global Calendar of events will be staged in Newport, RI. Racing in the famous waters of the America’s Cup, the J Class will use this regatta to kick off a four regatta programme culminating in a race around the Isle of Wight in July of 2012 on the original 1851 America’s Cup course, for the Hunderd Guinea Cup. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133792/image/large-ff147e317e5aafd124c3da9230e56fbf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133792">In 1930, Newport was the venue for the start of the remarkable J Class era. Between 1930 and 1937 there were just 10 of these stunning yachts constructed for the purpose of winning the America’s Cup. Two of the originals (<a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276">Shamrock V</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251">Velsheda</a>) will participate in Newport, together with <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a>, a true replica of the original. Negotiations continue with other new J yachts for them join the regatta. Lars Loftus, Captain of Velsheda, said, “Our team looks forward to racing in Newport, Brad Read of Sail Newport has given us an exciting course inside the bay which will be very testing for our thirty race crew.” In response, Dan Jackson, Captain of Ranger, said, “We look forward to competing against Velsheda on Ranger’s historic home waters.” Sail Newport and the J Class Association are responsible for the on water race management of the regatta. J Class regatta announced for July 2012

It is for the occasion of the Voiles de Saint-Tropez and in order to celebrate the end of the racing season, that the Yacht Club de Monaco is organising a “La Belle Classe” cocktail in the harbour of Saint-Tropez, aboard four classic yachts: Tuiga (1909), Mariquita (1911), Elena (1911 replica) and Shamrock V (1930). The J Class Association has announced outline plans for a series of spectacular regattas in England during 2012 - the Olympic Year. This will be the first time in history that more than four of these imposing yachts will race together in a fleet. The outline plan has received a positive response from J Class owners and event planning is now proceeding. The 2010 J-Class Calendar

The J-Class Rainbow, designed by Dykstra &amp; Partners for a repeat client, has started building at Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw. When the hull will be ready, Rainbow will be transported to be finished at Holland Jachtbouw (HJB). The re-build of this originally William Starling Burgess Designed yacht will be under supervision of Dykstra &amp; Partners Naval Architects. Rainbow will be built and fitted out to race with the existing and new J’s according to the JCA (J Class Association) rules. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129267/image/large-63ac024306f3a823227bfc1a1875cb76.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129267">To keep the J-Class fleet and races alive and to encourage new build yachts to enter the field, new JCA maximum performance rules have been developed, including allowing aluminum as building material. The new rule is a VPP (Velocity Prediction Program) based rating system which puts limits to the performance. This new rule has been developed by the Dykstra &amp; Partners office and the Wolfson Unit in Southampton. The aim of the JCA, the Dykstra team and the rule is to bring fair &amp; close racing to the fleet and to give all designs a chance of winning (on a handicap based system). Over the years the Dykstra team gained an enormous amount of hands-on information by racing on all the J’s in the current fleet. J-Class Rainbow starts construction

This morning near summer conditions returned once again to Saint-Tropez and participants gathered in La Citadelle for the prize giving ceremony that marks the closing of this year's edition of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. It is with a note of nostalgia that teams will leave this famous fishing village to return home until the 2009 edition of this spectacular event. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125664/image/large-a2eafd24dffc18702ebe2ad5b67dcc77.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125664">For the past three years there has been a special trophy given to the 16-metre Classic Yacht who accumulated the fewest points over the week of races. This year the winner was Graham Walter and his Marconi Rowdy, who finished the week at the top of her class. Philippe Schaeffer, Rolex France, presented Mr. Walter with the Rolex Trophy and a Rolex Submariner, close companion to all nautical achievements. Rowdy comes after previous winners So Fong (2006) and Agneta (2007) had inscribed their names on the Rolex Trophy. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125665/image/large-5296ba3f2c52dd2391a0812b91d2feef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125665">Rowdy was designed by legend Nathanial Herreshoff and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1916 in Bristol, Rhode Island. She is part of the New York 40 Class, named so because the design is 40 feet off the waterline, and is one of the 14 or so boats in the class that was constructed between 1916 and 1917. Also known as the "Fighting Forties," these sailing yachts were built for members of the New York Yacht Club and Rowdy raced for many years with great success. World War I put a halt to further construction of the class and most of these great vessels have ceased to exist today. Rowdy is one of the few. She has recently undergone a major rebuild and won the yacht Club de France's Autumn Cup (Marconi Division) in Cannes just before her arrival in Saint-Tropez for the 2008 edition of Les Voiles. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125666/image/large-b39aa325d3bcbc27f3ff2ae74b345850.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125666">This year the racing was grand in spite of the Mistral crashing the party with violent winds that prohibited most racing on Thursday and all racing Friday. Les Voiles de Saint Tropez 2008 comes to a close

Bright sun and fresh gusts welcomed the crews this morning in the bay of Saint-Tropez. Today the 300 participating yachts in this year's Voiles de Saint-Tropez were given the chance to truly test themselves for the first time this week. No more twiddling thumbs while waiting for the wind; with the Mistral in full effect since sunrise, the crews of the Classic Yachts had to put real muscle into their work in order to keep control of their vessels' massive sails, which can often exceed 200 m2. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125612/image/large-d26413824ec596c5248238abcfd23106.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125612">Today was a welcome change from yesterday, when the race committee was forced to shorten the racecourse due to capricious winds. In yesterday's conditions Agneta, winner of the Rolex Trophy in 2007, finished second in the Marconi division just behind Rowdy but in front of Oiseau de Feu who finished third. In the Schooner category Mariquita finished ahead of Lulworth, Moonbeam III, Moonbeam IV and Thendara. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125613/image/large-3969d011546dae30e0a0877c55345301.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125613">A piece of the Camper &amp; Nicholsons sailing story For more than 100 years the products of the celebrated Camper &amp; Nicholsons design house and shipyard have continued to shine in Mediterranean and European regattas. With Avel, Creole, Oiseau de Feu, Partridge and Sylvia, the Camper &amp; Nicholsons fleet here in Saint-Tropez represents a beautiful collection of classic yachts. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125614/image/large-a9996f4cd349ddb8ba45964a9e99b4ab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125614">The story behind the Camper &amp; Nicholsons that we know today dates back to 1782 with a man named Frances Amos. Amos came from London to Gosport where he leased a plot of land as a boat builder. His business building small trading ships was fairly successful, and with no heir of his own, Amos passed the lease to his great nephew William Camper in 1824. Working in close collaboration with Gosport sail maker James Lapthorn, Camper began to produce sailboats at the shipyard while continuing the production of trade ships. In 1836 Camper launched the cutter Breeze for James Lyon, and its success that same year at the King's Cup boosted the reputation and demand for Camper's sailing vessels. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125615/image/large-ecfec967de0621d4ebd64727f05e0ad8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125615">In 1842 there was a new addition to the Camper shipyard: 14-year old Ben Nicholson who joined as an apprentice, but who quickly began to move up the ranks. It was in 1860 that Nicholson, who had become the chief designer at the yard, designed the successful and beautiful schooner Aline. When it came time for Camper to retire, Nicholson was the logical choice for his replacement. In 1863 Ben Nicholson took over the business, with continued support from the Camper and Lapthorn families, and changed the name of the shipyard to Camper &amp; Nicholson. The shipyard grew to almost double its previous size, bolstered by the success and durability of its schooners, and when Nicholson's three sons later joined the company the name was officially changed to its current Camper &amp; Nicholsons. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125616/image/large-c184f7768a28714fcf974ec447cf812c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125616">Nicholson's eldest son, also named Ben, focused his talents on recruiting crews, a service the shipyard provided until 1939. The youngest of the three brothers, Arthur, was specialized in managing the yard's construction and maintenance facilities. It was the middle brother, Charles E. Nicholson, who took to design. When Charles' Dacia won fourteen races in 1892 the demand for Camper &amp; Nicholsons sailing designs skyrocketed. Interestingly, the shipyard has always produced more motorboats than sailing yachts, but this has not prevented a number of sailing innovations and great designs emanating from Camper &amp; Nicholsons. In 1912 Istra was built with an incredibly lightweight, laminated wood construction, leading to the 1927 commission of Vira (later renamed Creole), a sailboat that some would say is one of Charles Nicholson's most beautiful creations. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125617/image/large-e992ef68b5ecb3c1f27d4d3fc0c39a3f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125617"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125618/image/large-f810339e3ba0791f611d878e4432995d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125618">Nicholson became known for his elegant, fast and reliable designs and when he was commissioned to build a yacht for Sir Thomas Lipton, the 1930 America's Cup Challenger Shamrock V was born. The designer produced three other J Class boats that raced in the America's Cup including the 1932 Challenger Velsheda, 1934 Challenger Endeavour I and 1936 Challenger Endeavour II. It is for these designs that Charles E. Nicholson is most often remembered in the sailing world. Two of his earlier designs, Astra and Candida, were later altered to conform as closely as possible to the J Class rule. It is a true tribute to the quality of Camper &amp; Nicholsons construction to say that all of these, with the exception of Endeavour II, are still sailing today. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125619/image/large-37c5f065c6210d21987b0637cfabf7da.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125619">Charles E. Nicholson continued to play an active role in the company until his death in 1954 at age 86. Although many of his designs are still held in highest regard in the sailing community, racing yacht production was astonishingly less than ten percent of the company's output during Charles E. Nicholson's time in charge. Nicholson was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 1997. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125620/image/large-6e17bb41aeb626a971cedf14c5792537.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125620">Here in Saint-Tropez some of Charles E. Nicholson's designs can be seen in action: Avel, Creole, Oiseau de Feu, Partridge and Sylvia, all of which are competing for the 2008 Rolex Trophy with the exception of Partridge. Seeing these great classics go up against one another is like a trip back in time. Les voiles arm wrestle the Mistral & the Camper & Nicholsons classic collection

Racing at the 10th edition of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez began this morning under bright sun and almost summer conditions. With a promising breeze at the start that later fell still, today was the first race for the Classics who enjoyed the chance to hoist their sails and race one another over a 24-mile coastal course. Leading the fleet home were Altair and Rowdy within a hair's breadth of one another. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125593/image/large-b144c6519cc5e92d383ba07af51d8f9b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125593">Today was also the first day of the Rolex Trophy, which is open to classic yachts over 16 metres in length. The winner of this trophy will only be known for certain when the overall scores are revealed on Saturday evening, adding to the suspense of what is sure to be an enthralling series. Whoever proves to be the winner, we may be confident that she will have been the most sure-footed of those competing this week. With more than 300 monohulls on the water today, crowds onshore, spectator boats, the media and the numerous photographers on site, Organisers' the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez will be pleased with both their course planning and crowd control went so remarkably smoothly at this grand spectacle that is one of the sailing world's greatest annual gatherings. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125594/image/large-62d79d6751856f653630ffcbe10dcf32.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125594">Yesterday we took a look at how Olin J. Stephens changed the face of yacht design forever. Today we look towards William Fife Jr, another one of the great classic yacht designers, whose success spanned both the 19th and 20th Centuries. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125595/image/large-fff11f4502ea642051206a3a07c8d5a5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125595">Grandson and son of William Fife I and II, William Fife III (Fife Junior) was a descendant of a long line of family naval architects. Born in 1857 in Fairlie, on the West Coast of Scotland, William Fife Jr. grew up surrounded by his father's and grandfather's boat designs. Quickly initiated into the family business, Fife Jr. did not have long to wait before he made his own name in the industry. His drawings quickly seduced some of the greatest European families and the second yacht Fife Jr drew-up was Dragon, from which his trademark dragon signature was born; a symbol found on the bow of every vessel he designed from this point on. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125596/image/large-9b2c376605a9c266cddb171bd8af4919.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125596">In 1879 he completed the 190-ton schooner that was property of Jean Baptiste Charcot and that sailed under the name Why Not. Another yacht, originally named Yum, was finished by the Fairlie shipyard in 1898 and became famous under the name Pen Duick. By this time already Fife Jr was internationally recognized for the quality and beauty of the boats he designed and constructed. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125597/image/large-8703cf2172603c0ad451f3b852d663c2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125597">Fife Jr soon became involved in the heady world of the America's Cup, notably drawing a series of boats named Shamrock for the challenges put forward by tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton. Fife Jr's Shamrocks were ultimately unsuccessful, losing to Columbia in 1899 and to Reliance in 1903. This was not his only venture into thoroughbred racing yachts. Fife was responsible for some of the greatest and fastest 15 and 19-metre boats of the period after the first International Rule was established in 1906. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125598/image/large-2bc5f6b2343658c11718f96d6f2dec16.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125598">William Fife Jr was a prolific architect often creating over 50 designs annually, the majority of those drawings coming to life within a year. In 1903, Moonbeam of Fife was completed for Charles Plumtree Johnson and, it was following the war that Johnson ordered another of Fife Jr's most famous designs still in existence today: Moonbeam IV, completed in 1920. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125599/image/large-6389558408ae4dfdf7d8371c1cd01301.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125599">For over 50 years Fife Jr's yachts won races all over the world and he designed almost 1000 during his career, which continued into his late seventies (Latifa was completed in 1935 when he was 78 years old). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125600/image/large-7c3ee8716a967646fb85432efdc265f4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125600">Today no one knows exactly how many of Fife Jr's designs still exist, although there are thought to be about 100, perhaps half of which are still on the water, lovingly restored and cared for by justifiably proud owners. Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez 2008 is proud to welcome some of those here to participate in the regatta. Any fellow Scotsman in Saint Tropez this week will take pride in seeing potential Rolex Trophy winners Cambria, Altair, Mariquita, Irina VII, Nan of Fife, Moonbeam III and Moonbeam IV on the docks; enough great names to make all the sailors in the world dream of both past and present glory. Close classic racing and a Scotsman's designs in Saint Tropez

Les Voiles de Saint Tropez is known for bringing together the most beautiful of both modern and classic racing boats - making a tour around the docks like looking into a magnificent show window of both the latest technology and architectural genius of centuries past. One looks from Esense to Senso One, which showcase all details of the modern, to the docks filled with the astounding cathedrals of sails belonging to Créole, Altair, Lulworth and Thendara. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125577/image/large-fa4d982be2f8d2eaf16e632a99a5e60a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125577">It is almost impossible to focus on a single yacht with all of the beauties that crowd the dock and transport this old fishing port back to historic times. Brought together these yachts arouse a curiosity and desire to learn more about the passionate men who were behind the drawing pen of these jewels. As of Tuesday, the Classic Yachts over 16 meters will join in the races to try their chances at taking home the Rolex Trophy. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125578/image/large-21ed84591d59ba15249d67d4192bdb46.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125578">Since Monday night the port of Saint-Tropez has been filled to capacity as the Yacht Club de France's Autumn Cup came to a close and the yachts made their way here for the 2008 Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. The division winners of the Autumn Cup are Shamrock V (Spirit of Tradition), Kookabura (12 MJI), Moonbeam IV (Classic Yachts), Nan of Fife (Gaffs) and Rowdy (Marconis). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125579/image/large-7567bc58698d84e17043279b1d671de4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125579">The journey from Cannes to Saint-Tropez finished with the classic yachts berthed alongside the participating modern yachts, finally completing the collection of exceptional masts, that are almost all over 40 metres high, for this year's edition of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Last night was the official Welcome Cocktail and all of the teams came together in the race village to inaugurate the opening of the social programme that is an essential part of this world-renowned regatta marking the end of the Mediterranean sailing season. Olin Stephens, a man of legend Taking in all these great vessels that fill the harbour make one reflect upon the men whose designs have made these yachts a living legend. One of the greatest of these is surely Olin J. Stephens, a man who changed history with his designs and passion for building great yachts. Known as one of the greatest and most successful yacht designers of the 20th century, Olin Stephens' name will carry on for generations in the yachting community, a true man of legend. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125580/image/large-4a983dd54b312de3c3fc570999978ab8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125580">Born in 1908 in New York, Olin Stephens loved sailboats. His designs were often exceptional and the world had already begun to take notice when he was just nineteen years old. Stephens grew up sailing with his brother Roderick and the young Stephens dreamed of one day designing a monohull that would take home the prestigious America's Cup Trophy. The brothers Stephens joined in partnership with Drake Sparkman at the end of the 1920's to create Sparkman and Stephens, one of today's great yacht-design firms. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125581/image/large-0f8891c53fc7e13e21e42bc6ac3c82ad.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125581">When the Great Depression hit the United States, the future of the firm was assured with the order of a racing yacht named Dorade. This 16-metre yawl proved to be a great success, winning race after race including the 1931 Trans-Atlantic Race and the famed Fastnet Race. Her success changed the face of yacht design forever, launching the yacht industry into the search for the fastest, lightest yacht possible. Following the Second World War, Stephen's designs were behind many regatta victories, from the Admiral's Cup to the One Ton Cup and beyond. Between 1937 and 1980 Stephens helped design six twelve-metre America's Cup defenders, winning eight out of nine editions of the famed “Cup”, including Ranger in 1937, Columbia in 1958, Constellation in 1964, Intrepid in 1967, Courageous in 1974 and Freedom in 1980. In 1993 Stephens was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame and in 2007 he was presented with a lifetime achievement award and chosen as one of the initial six inductees to the inaugural ISAF Sailing Hall of Fame. During his career more than 2,200 designs made it from the drawing table to the waters of the world. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125582/image/large-3018cc13629873db797dc55fc725c444.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125582">Olin Stephens celebrated his 100th birthday this year and passed away exactly five months later on September 13th, 2008. He had even written an autobiography, published when he was 90 years old, and the final few sentences provide insight to the man that changed yacht design forever as we look back on his life: "In all phases of my work I was conscious of the need for balance, and I did my best to find balance in both the long and the short view. Broadly, I think I can say that I applied the principles of balance in design, in business and in the pleasures I enjoyed.” Stephen's Stormy Weather will be racing in the Tradition category during Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez 2008. Stormy Weather is known as one of Sparkman &amp; Stephens most acclaimed early designs after Dorade and she is most known for winning the 1935 Newport-Bergen Race and the Fastnet. Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez 2008: Tall masts and passionate designers

Following the busy racing schedule of both Ranger and Velsheda during the last few seasons, there has been an explosion of interest in the J Class. With two new replicas under construction, the J Class Association (JCA) has issued a definitive list of J yachts from history which can be built as replica new builds under their rules. This provides a listing of interesting historical data and details of yachts currently sailing, under construction and reserved for build (see list below). New handicap system The Class has also commissioned a new handicap system, developed by the Wolfson Unit at Southampton University. This new JCA system is based on VPP calculations and will be validated from towing tank results from the 1930s prepared initially in a report for Harold S Vanderbilt, who went on to commission the build of the 1937 Ranger. This comprehensive document has been made available by the Sparkman and Stephens USA office to the JCA. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124315/image/large-2d645680d8e892a8489e1cd29e21c54c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124315">Bruce Johnson, Chief Designer at the S&amp;S office, stated, “We are pleased to be working with the J Class Association and Wolfson Unit for this research project and we are happy to share this report of tank test results, to further validate the rating process for the J Class.” This information, from the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, has provided the vital cross check for the Wolfson Unit to complete the figures for accurate handicapping of the Js, in the interests of fair racing and good sportsmanship on the race course. It is intended that races will be won on the water with this new system, minimising discrepancies in handicap ratings. John Robinson from the Wolfson Unit stated, “Development of this custom system based on historic design information, specific to the J Class and the results of tank testing from 1930s, gives us a fairer system than that based on the regression data from more modern hull forms already held within the VPP.” New yachts under construction<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124316/image/large-aa6254a7343df989540a0a7de4ff60fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124316"><a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/384">Endeavour II</a> was one of the largest J yacht hulls ever built and the replica is now well on its way towards completion at Royal Huisman Shipyard in Holland. The yacht is due to launch in late 2008. Gerard Dijkstra &amp; Partners are design consultants for this project. It will feature a one-piece carbon mast, advanced deck layout and interior design by Pieter Beeldsnijder Design. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2079">Lionheart</a> is based on accurate lines plans from the Ranger 77F model which was never built. She is being built at Claasen Shipyard in Holland. With these two new yachts likely to launch in the coming year, the JCA fleet is set to double in size. With the sheer size, sail area, crew, complexity, cost and commitment, this is certainly the most exciting class of thoroughbred yachts in the world. Further build projects are under discussion for design and build. J Class Racing Both <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251">Velsheda</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a> will be competing in Antigua Classic Regatta, April 18th to 22nd 2008. They are closely matched in performance, both in speed and on handicap, so it is likely to provide exciting racing for both yachts and spectators. Nelson’s old lookout position at Shirley Heights, above the windward mark, will be the place to watch the yachts. Explosion of interest in J Class Yachts

Endeavour II update

Construction is well underway on Lionheart, the first of a new breed of aluminium J-Class yachts from the boards of Hoek Design in the Netherlands. One of the leading offices in classically styled sailing yachts, Hoek Design is intimately involved in the revival of these magnificent yachts from the 1930s. In addition to Lionheart, which will be launched in the third quarter of 2009, the office has three other J-class yachts under development. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123975/image/large-8ec277ebaa0f4f8891893b9b01902610.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123975"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123976/image/large-49394d1bc30f30f662488a600a46e0d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123976">Hoek Design has developed specific Velocity Prediction Software for J-Class yachts in partnership with Piet van Oossanen of wing keel fame. This highly sophisticated Velocity Prediction Program (VPP) has been developed specifically for these craft, and was calibrated using tank test data from a six-metre long model of a J. The aerodynamic part was calibrated with wind tunnel test data. “In contrast to other types of software, our VPP software is capable of calculating rudder angles as well as predicting performance in waves,” Andre Hoek explains. “This enables us to also optimise helm balance.” History makers One of the key drivers of the J-Class revival was the decision of the J-Class Association to allow aluminium to be used as a hull construction material. This reinforced the renewed interest among owners to build J-class yachts. A total of 20 J’s were designed between 1930 and 1937. Of the ten built in the 1930s, only three have survived: <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621">Endeavour</a>, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251">Velsheda</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1276">Shamrock V</a>. The <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a> (photo below) that sails today is a replica built to the original lines drawings in steel and launched in 2003. This leaves ten J-Class designs that have never been built. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123977/image/large-d06448bccb44ebd4a1129d3d4cd96cdc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123977">“Our office carried out a performance analysis of the existing J’s as well as the designs that were allowed to be built under the new J-Class Association rules,” Hoek explains. “We analysed the line honours and handicap of all 20 yachts and modelled them in our software in such a way that we could predict performance. A specific handicap system was developed by the J-Class Association for these yachts in order to enable smaller and larger and steel and aluminium J’s to race against each other. This analysis gave us a great deal of insight into the performance differences between these yachts.” “The best five performing yachts were further analysed with computational fluid dynamic software in order to gain greater insight into the differences. The series of yachts originally designed for the Ranger project in 1936 proved to be very good performance-wise, although some are better for light air conditions and others for heavy air.” Optimising Lionheart Originally designed for the Ranger syndicate by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2079">Lionheart</a> is the first yacht to be built based upon this research. Under construction for a repeat customer of Hoek Design, she will be the largest J afloat when launched. Tremendous 17-metre overhangs on a LOA of 44 metres have created a fascinating super J with a maximum waterline length. Hoek: “We extensively optimised Lionheart's structure using 3D structural modelling techniques with finite element software programs. The complete hull structure was analysed for stiffness and torsion, and her stiffness compared to the steel original. The weight of the hull structure was also further optimised, while the hull was developed in high tensile Alustar plating and extrusion materials to provide even greater stiffness. We also carried out extensive research into the mast position, and sail area vs. handicap in order to create a yacht that would perform to her best on the race course.” <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123978/image/large-293714de83fd9877680de6060d29a31b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123978">The cruising option Lionheart is designed for cruising as well as racing, and is therefore being built to MCA classification. She will be one of the very few J-Class yachts available for charter as the majority are not built to class. Her deck layout shows two small deckhouses with sleek and low profiles as well as two small cockpit areas. The privacy concept that Hoek Design created for renowned projects such as <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1842">Adele</a>, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/149">Boreas</a> and the upcoming <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/21">Athos</a> was also further developed for Lionheart to offer an owner's stateroom with a private deckhouse and private cockpit. Lionheart will also have three guest suites, four crew cabins and a lounge area. The aluminium hull construction got underway in August 2007 at Freddie Bloemsma’s specialist hull yard and will be finished by Claasen Jachtbouw. Lionheart is the 17th yacht to be built to Hoek Design drawings by Claasen. Construction management is in the hands of Nigel Ingram of Marine Construction Management in Newport, USA. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123979/image/large-2655f9070b7bbb318d9e3868fe971fcb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123979"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123980/image/large-794fdfdb1b7665634b79ae602c7fdddf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123980">More J-Class splendour Hoek Design is also presently working on three other J-Class projects, including a replica of the first J ever built. “Enterprise is the smallest of the fleet but will be a strong contender on handicap,” Hoek says. “She will also be built in Alustar to a high technical specification. Her performance will be extensively optimised and she will be built for both racing and cruising.” A second project presently under development is a replica of the famous Tore Holm design, Svea. This is under development for a consortium of three Dutch and three Swedish owners who will use the yacht for corporate racing. “Svea’s hull will most probably be built in Holland and the yacht will then be finished at a Swedish yard,” Hoek reveals. “Svea proved to be a strong upwind performer in our tests and is one of the best looking J’s ever designed.” The third project is a replica of a never built super J by Franck Paine. “This design will be developed along the lines of Lionheart,” Hoek concludes. “She will be another very strong contender in this exciting and expanding fleet of J-Class yachts.” <noscript></noscript>

While the Edmiston charter team is out in force inspecting the new Caribbean charter fleet, the salesmen have been networking with their international clientele this month closing the sales on three purchases (Netanya 7, Highland Breeze and Distraction) and signing up half a dozen significant new central agencies. The Cote d’Azur office is particularly active with Russell Crump signing up a 2001 Sunseeeker 105 “Flagship boat with the Mk II look” – named <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1241">Shereen</a>, this 31m with handsome dark hull does an impressive 31 knots, with a 600 mile range, and is lying in the South of France. Asking price of euro3.5m ex VAT for one of Britain’s finest brands. For those feeling the pinch of the USA property market then perhaps the more modest Falcon 24m Sea Magic at 1.65m euros will see you through 2008 until you are ready to conjure up something larger. Ice-strengthened and with port &amp; starboard beach platforms plus a 5500nm range, she is clearly a go-anywhere ship. Edmiston’s new New York office has rapidly penetrated the core of the big apple’s big money, old and new. Newly listed by Edmiston New York is <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/960">Enterprise V</a>, a 51m Feadship ‘Rolls Royce’ build in the Netherlands in 1992, refited in 2006 and offered for US$22.5m.
