One of the yachting industry’s favourite shows, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/129" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma International Boat Show - 2022">Palma International Boat Show</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6679" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma Superyacht Village (Company)">Palma Superyacht Village</a> returns for 2022. The event previously known as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4309" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma Superyacht Show (Company)">Palma Superyacht Show</a>, will take place from 28th April to 1st May 2022 in the heart of Palma de Mallorca at Moll Vell Marina. Overall winner in the J Class fleet of six at the 2017 edition of the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta was Lionheart. Boasting seven times round-the-world racer Bouwe Bekking as her tactician, Lionheart reaped the rewards of their solid, consistent sailing in Bermuda from 12th to 15th June.

“We are delighted. We want to win all the races we ever do. That’s why we do it, isn’t it,” Bekking commented, “and the boat is going well in the conditions that we have prepared her for. When we learned we were going to Bermuda where potentially there are very light airs, we had to look and see how we can make the boat as good as it can be. That was the first thing “And then when we are doing our training it is very intensive. I am sure we have done more manoeuvres in practice than anyone else. And of course our owner has done a fantastic job driving the ‘bus’. He has come a long way and is beating some of the good pro drivers, and of course there are other great owner-drivers in this class.”

Also in the running for the overall trophy was Action, the 37.3-metre Dykstra designed vessel built by Royal Huisman, which won Class B. Tension prevailed into the final minutes of the last race as Action saved her time on her rivals by virtue of the last two or three wind shifts picked out by double Olympic silver medallist and Volvo Ocean Race winning skipper Ian Walker who works in concert with Shirley Robertson, a double gold medal winner.

“We have done three regattas now and have been getting better each time and so it is great to win here. The first regatta was really about learning the simple things like how to get the spinnaker up and down and how to do the manoeuvres,” Walker explained. “Shirley does great work with the owner who steers the boat all the way through the races, making sure we are fast all the time.”

Bequia, the Stephens Waring and White 27.6-metre design, won for the second day in a row to win Class C overall. Tom Whidden, who first won the America’s Cup with Stars &amp; Stripes in 1980, guided Bequia to the class win, highlighting the range of courses as an outstanding feature of the event.

Lord Irvine Laidlaw’s Class A winner Highland Fling 15, a Nautor’s Swan 115 which was launched last year, also made sure of the top prize for the division by winning two of their three races. Tactician Stuart Childerley, a past GBR Olympian who is in demand around the world as a top Principal Race Officer, loved his return to the cut and thrust of calling tactics rather than setting courses and laying start lines.

Lionheart victorious at America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta 2017

The Farr 100 Rán Leopard, helmed by Niklas Zennström and with Adrian Stead on tactics, completed the Transatlantic Superyacht &amp; Maxi Regatta in 7 days, 8 hours, 59 minutes and 12 seconds to claim line honours and smash the course record. Zennström and his 18-strong crew crossed the finish line off Virgin Gorda shortly after 10 p.m. UTC last night after covering 3,300 miles at an average speed of 18.6 knots. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142009/image/large-4c72cf545f2b5bb9a7f6e35296ae63ba.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142009">The new course record beats the previous one set by Hetairos in 2011 by 25 hours, 59 minutes and 18 seconds. The race is organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in collaboration with the International Maxi Association (IMA) and saw six maxi yachts and superyachts leave Tenerife on 26th November bound for the YCCS Clubhouse and Marina in Virgin Gorda's North Sound. With a curriculum that includes wins in the Rolex Fastnet Race, Copa del Rey and Mini Maxi Rolex World Championship, Zennström approached his first transatlantic regatta with the enthusiasm and concentration that has made Rán one of the top names in international racing. Chartering the 30.5-metre supermaxi Leopard was certainly a smart first step and the crew regularly reported boat speeds of 20 knots and above. "It was an amazing crossing!" said a delighted Zennström on his arrival at YCCS Virgin Gorda. "The crew did an excellent job and the boat achieved the result we were aiming for. During the crossing we faced a maximum wind of 35 knots and the boat's maximum speed was 32-33 knots. Thankfully we had no major failures onboard, just the usual minor breakages for a comfortable racing boat. We are very happy to have established a new record for this transatlantic regatta and we are very happy to be here in the new YCCS Clubhouse." The 32-metre Baltic Yachts sloop Nilaya was in second place at approximately 395 miles from the finish at 9 a.m. UTC. Peter Harrison's Farr 115 Sojana, a veteran competitor in all five editions of the Transatlantic Superyacht &amp; Maxi Regatta, followed approximately 100 miles behind in third place with Oscar Konyukhov's Med Spirit, the 27.7-metre sloop representing the Russian Yachting Federation, in fourth. Rán Leopard claims line honours in Transatlantic Superyacht & Maxi Regatta

An enthusiastic Ken Read (Newport, R.I.) got the 2011 sailing season off to a resounding start on board the new Maxi Yacht Rambler 100 in the Caribbean 600. The American skipper, who leads the Puma Ocean Racing project, has just won the event, leaving his rival Leopard 3 a long way behind and in so doing also grabbing the race record.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/134245/image/large-ff05da5d58ae4d352026045f6e855d9b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/134245"> Winner of last year’s inaugural running of the Les Voiles de St. Barth as skipper of George David’s (Hartford, Conn.) 90-foot Rambler, Read was naturally entrusted with the helm of Rambler 100 (the former Speedboat) when David took command of it earlier this year. Very excited by Rambler 100’s performance so far, Read is looking forward to the race program that lies ahead in the coming weeks. The second edition of the Les Voiles de St. Barth is next on the schedule (April 4-9), and with a mere mention of Read’s victory at the 2010 event, he admits without hesitation that he took advantage of "the best conditions ever experienced in my whole career...." The prospect of once again facing their main rival Leopard 3 (owned by Great Britain’s Mike Slade) at Les Voiles de St. Barth--in closely fought contests on a variety of windy courses--is something that Read and David are extremely happy about. The Americans will bring along the whole of Read’s Puma Ocean Racing team, comprised of 15 top class professional sailors that will join seven other experienced crewmen to sail the powerful carbon Maxi Yacht. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/134246/image/large-c228ee0c8c1b34814b4852a0ae826333.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/134246">"Don’t change a thing!," said Read about the Les Voiles des St. Barth format, which features short daytime race courses that will have Rambler 100 and Leopard 3 facing off for the first time with that type of racing. "Rambler 100 and Leopard 3 are two huge monsters," he said, explaining that both boats are entered in the Atlantic Ocean Racing Series, which reaches its climax in June with the 2011 Transatlantic Race from Newport, Rhode Island to The Lizard (UK). "They are record-breaking boats designed for long ocean races and major offshore courses; however, for our crew, it is vital to be able to compete in inshore races like those that will be held in St. Barth. Our battle against Leopard 3 will be very demanding for the crews and fascinating to watch, as we will be alongside each other for a lot of the time and it is bound to offer a maximum level of excitement." The Caribbean 600 represented an intermediate format for Ken Read and his crew, and it very quickly turned to the advantage of Rambler 100, which led the way from start to finish in what were typically Caribbean conditions, with strong trade winds windward of the islands and tricky currents, particularly at night. "Sailing along at 26 knots under the stars, we had some great moments aboard Rambler 100, a boat that offers a completely new dimension to racing," concluded Read. Peter Harrison’s (Great Britain) 115-foot Farr-designed <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana</a>, which stood out in the Les Voiles de St. Barth last year and will be back again this year, also took part in the Caribbean 600 alongside Genuine Risk, the 90-foot Dubois design that has registered for the Les Voiles de St. Barth for the first time and may also thwart the favorites’ plans. "In St. Barth, each day is different,” said Read. “The race committee has done an excellent job coming up with courses around the islands that are spectacular and at the same time very demanding from a tactical perspective, as they mean we have to sail at every point of sail. The Les Voiles de St. Barth is also physically very tiring, as the strong regular winds that sweep across the islands at this time of year allow us to get the most out of the boat, implying frequent sail changes with each change of tack. Despite the set-back of not being able to hoist any mizzen sails, Sojana managed to hold-off the rest of the fleet and win the third and final race of The Superyacht Cup Antigua 2010. An elated Peter Harrison, owner of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana</a>, cheered as he crossed the line in first place, a much improved day out for him and his crew who have played as many rounds of golf on the island as sailing races in the past few days! <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/44">P2</a> had a tight battle all day, crossing tacks several times. Throughout the three days of racing the emphasis on sailing safe has been very high on everyone's mind and the superyacht racing protocol has been put to the test by the experts, without incident or protest. High priority on the agenda of this friendly superyacht regatta, the social program has been a huge hit; from Pirates of the Caribbean fancy dress, to last night’s all important 'cook-off' between the yachts, the social competitions were just as fiercely contested as the sailing. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana's </a>Captain, Marc Fitzgerald, prepared a magnificent grilled halibut and vegetable risotto while <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/301">Mirabella V</a> crew barbecued up a storm carefully supervised by the Captain 'Dr' Rocka. The superyachts taking part in this week’s Superyacht Cup Antigua have all arrived in the Caribbean island of Antigua and preparations have begun in Nelson's Dockyard to accommodate the fleet and host the dockside parties. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/130062/image/large-da150160aa6032f05431113427cd02be.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126280"> Timoneer claims victory in the Superyacht Cup Antigua 2008The latest yacht to confirm their participation is the largest sloop in the world at over 75m LOA, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/301">Mirabella V</a>. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/301">Mirabella V</a> was designed by Ron Holland and launched out of VT Shipbuilding in the UK in 2006 and has clocked up many thousands of sea-miles since her debut at the Superyacht Cup Antigua in December of the same year. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/301">Mirabella V</a> and her guests will be fully joining in the spirit of the event but will be sailing non-competitively against the rest of the fleet. Nelson’s Dockyard prepares for Superyacht Cup Antigua 2010 

Several of the yachts expected at the third edition of the Superyacht Cup Antigua next week have been battling unseasonal headwinds and heavy seas as they sail from the eastern seaboard of the United States and from Europe heading to English Harbour for next week’s regatta from 9-12th Dec. Last years' winner of the Antigua Superyacht Cup, Sojana is still at sea on their way across the Atlantic after experiencing bad weather south of the Canaries. Captain Marc Fitzgerald reported that they are still several days out of Antigua but very determined to make it for the first race. Ironically at English Harbour, conditions are perfect this week for the annual Antigua Charter Show, now in its 47th year. Over 70 sailing and motor yachts are on display to the worlds' leading yacht brokers. Signe the 35m Bruce King ketch, who arrived late on Wednesday night after a particularly rough delivery from New England, made an impressive transformation into 'show mode' and was ready on the dock the following day. The Signe crew will finish the Charter Show and immediately prepare for racing and join The Superyacht Cup. Representatives from Hickley Yacht Services, who undertook a major refit on Signe earlier this year will be joining the crew and sailing for the three day regatta. Already here well in time for The Superyacht Cup is the meticulously prepared Dubois designed 44m ketch Timoneer, taking part in her 6th Superyacht Cup regatta. The Superyacht Cup Antigua is run through the Antigua Yacht Club; the different course options are currently being considered to set a varied race course off the south of the island for the three days of racing. The event will adopt the popular ‘Bucket Rating’ system for the first time, in a bid to create a consistency with the ratings between the four major annual superyacht regattas, the St Barths and Newport Bucket regattas, and the Superyacht Cup Palma and Antigua events. The yachts will be given individual start times with the aim of finishing the fleet close together in a ‘pursuit style’ format. Race to start for the Superyacht Cup Antigua

The 3rd Superyacht Cup Antigua will be held from December 9th - 12th, in Nelson's Dockyard on the beautiful Caribbean island of Antigua. Timed to follow on from the Antigua Yacht Charter Show (December 4th - 9th), the regatta is a great way to open the new season by enjoying three days of racing with perfect trade-wind conditions and spectacular scenery. The evening's social activities bring the owners, captains, crew and guests altogether every afternoon after sailing for informal, lively dock parties, enjoying the best of the Caribbean hospitality. Perini P2 to make superyacht cup debut in Antigua

Starting off the winter season in the Caribbean, the Antigua Yacht Charter Meeting, from the 5th – 11th December, was dominated by CNI Central Agency yachts, including the 51.4m (168’) Lazy Z which stormed through the Concourse de Chef, with Emma Rye winning the main chef competition and the Caribbean Coffee competition, whilst the best table setting was awarded to Lazy Z’s Chief Stewardess Madurya Abitol. Charter Expect to see some new names among existing favourites as the CNI charter division welcomes four yachts to the fleet. The 43.95m (143’) Heesen <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/293">Sedation</a>, built in 1997, is currently undergoing a complete refit and will be available Summer 08 in the Mediterranean. Another addition to the fleet is the 29.36m (96’) Serenity Now. Debuting at the Antigua Yacht Charter Meeting in December 07, she was built by Westship in 1991 and refit in 2006. She is available for charter in the Virgin Islands and Leeward Islands this winter and Summer 08. The 29.75m (97’) Gigi by Hargrave also joined the US fleet. Built in 2005, she is available in the Bahamas this winter before heading to New England for the Summer season. Also debuting in the Caribbean this winter season is the 26.5m/87’ Monarch II from Johnson. She will be crossing to the Mediterranean for the summer season. Finally, the 24.4m (80’) Dolce Vita from Cantieri Arno is available in the Bahamas this winter before heading to the Med for a summer season.

The third and final race of the Superyacht Cup in Antigua proved to be the closest sailing so far, with all the yachts finishing within 10 minutes. That may not sound close for some yacht racing, but with a fleet varying in size from 29m to over 44m and a range of displacements of over 180 tonnes, close racing would normally be hard to achieve. However, after two races, the estimated times around the course provided an accurate assessment for the start times and the yachts were able to chase one another around the course. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123786/image/large-01848180028fbb10304d99fbff93ada7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123786">Photo credit: Kos / kospictures.comStarting 25 minutes after the first boat, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/884">Yanneke Too</a>, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana</a> managed to sail through the fleet, finally overtaking Timoneer within two minutes of the finish. The wind was still blowing hard at 25 - 30 knots, and with big seas the close racing was all the more exciting and gave the photographers an opportunity to get some excellent shots. At the last mark off Curtain Bluff, Sojana was still in last place tacking round the mark just after the Swan, Virago. Both boats were well sailed, quickly hardening up at the mark to start the last windward leg. Sojana was forced to tack off for clean air and soon started to make her gains on the whole fleet. The big, heavy ketches <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1454">Timoneer </a>and Yanneke Too headed out to sea on long tacks, whereas Sojana sailed up the middle of the course benefitting from any wind shifts and wind speed variations. Timoneer made her final approach to the line from a long way out to sea but could not quite lay the pin end of the line, giving Sojana the opportunity to sail right past her and straight over the line. By the 'triple point rating' for the last race, Sojana managed to win The Superyacht Cup Antigua 2007 by just 0.3 points. Overall: 1st Sojana, 2nd Timoneer, 3rd Patient Falcon

Final Race of The Superyacht Cup Antigua 2007

As ocean crossings go, the Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2007, which started 26th November, will go down in yachting history as relatively tame, save for humpback whale sightings, flying fish frenzies and token moments of equipment anguish in brisk winds. Perhaps it was the ample size of the seven competing boats -- maxi yachts of 18 metres (70 feet) and above -- that granted enjoyable crossings. Or maybe it was the fact that the traditionally steady northeasterly trade winds on the 2700-mile course from Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands), where the race started, to St. Maarten (Netherlands Antilles) where it ended, only occasionally "broke up" to toy with best-laid plans. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123782/image/large-9e44c0cd6b7ad8b929b50df96b36f6ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123782">Whichever was the case, the smooth going for this first-time event was greatly appreciated by both the competitors and organizers from Italy's Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS). And in the end, IRC handicap calculations handed overall victory and a Rolex timepiece to Anders Johnson (Stockholm, Sweden) and the crew aboard his Swan 70 Blue Pearl (GBR). The sleeping giant, with its almost exclusively Swedish crew -- including skipper Klabbe Nylof who has crossed the Atlantic over a dozen times -- had finished an unassuming fourth over the line on 8th December, after 12 days, 2 hours, 22 minutes and 41 seconds at sea. "It was good for us on board," said Johnson. "Everybody had fun and we are really pleased with the result. We had a few problems with wrecked spinnakers and a lot of sails damaged, but overall it went well. At the end of the race, we had two days with not very much wind at all, which was quite annoying; then the wind came back on the last night and we were logging 18 and even up to 20 knots so that was really good. This is my second Transatlantic and I’m sure I’ll do more. I like the long haul!" Second place went to Oslo Norway's Morten Bergesen, whose predominantly Norwegian crew aboard the Wally 105 <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1910">Nariida</a> (NOR) included Volvo Ocean Race veteran Knut Frostad as skipper and the equally famous Swede Roger Nilsen as tactician. Nariida, the oldest boat in the fleet (launched in 1994), also received the YCCS Line Honours Trophy and the International Maxi Association (IMA) Challenge Trophy for the highest-placed IMA member. Early in the race, Frostad reported a small swell and blue sky while running under spinnaker ahead of 16-20 knot trade winds. "For those onboard used to racing in the Volvo Ocean Race, it’s a huge difference sleeping in a proper bed and eating nice food every day." On day seven (2nd December), however, the skipper had more serious issues with which to contend: "We are crossing a massive squall line with rain and lightning. This is the beginning of the front we have to go through to get to the northerly breeze on the other side. Our strategy has been to position ourselves long-term for this transition and to get the best approach to the finish. It’s obviously a tricky and quite unusual situation with the trades completely broken by the low pressure system ahead of us." At the time, Nariida's closest competitor on both corrected time and for line honours was <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana</a>, which, according to Frostad, "bailed out earlier and chose a completely different strategy, heading south." As Frostad knew, however, "corrected time calculations are never realistic until every boat is finished, and if the smaller boats get more breeze in the end, the picture can change." Nariida finished first over the line on 7th December after just more than 10 1/2 days at sea. Sojana wound up sixth on corrected time although she followed Nariida over the line in second place, less than seven hours behind her. Gerhard Ruether’s Zefiro (Hamburg, GER) was the very last maxi to cross the finish line on 10th December. The Solaris 76 completed the crossing in 14:1:21:5 and took third place overall under IRC handicap. "It was our first Atlantic crossing and bearing in mind that we had the smallest crew, only eight, I am very proud," said Ruether, noting that challenges included mending a blown-out spinnaker and negotiating wind speeds from 6 to 46 knots. "It was the first time they all sailed together as a team and they did exceptionally well, great teamwork." Rounding out the standings on corrected time were Andrè Auberton's Wally 100 Dark Shadow (MON) in fourth; Will Apold's Swan 78 Valkyrie (CAN) in fifth; Peter Harrison's Farr 115 Sojana (GBR) in sixth; and Bernd Kortüm's Swan 100 <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1452">Julie Marie</a> (GER) in seventh. Apold (Halifax), who couldn't help musing about crew antics, sea life and falling stars in his log, admitted that this was the first time his crew of 13 -- all from the Halifax area of Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada -- had sailed in a format other than against each other on small boats. "I would like to congratulate the YCCS, Rolex and the IMA for proposing, planning and executing this fine race. This is the right timing, the right start location and the correct finish island and will draw more boats in the future." The Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2007, which the YCCS plans to hold again next year with the same format, was promoted by the IMA with the support of the Real Club Nautico de Tenerife and the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. It was created by the IMA in collaboration with YCCS in response to requests from owners for a transatlantic race dedicated specifically to maxi yachts. The regatta will also contribute to the IMA’s efforts to establish a seasonal circuit for maxis that will allow owners to compete in summer offshore events in the Mediterranean and Europe before moving to the Caribbean for the traditional winter racing season. The maxis will return to the YCCS, which is located in Sardinia and administers the IMA, for the Rolex Boat International Superyacht Regatta in June followed by the annual Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in September. Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2007: Smooth going for first-time event

The weather provided plenty of variation for the Superyacht Cup fleet for the first race of the three day series in Antigua. Yanneke Too sailed an excellent race making the most of the strong wind conditions, big swells and with conservative preparation for the final squall they crossed the line first, winning the Camper &amp; Nicholsons International Race by 2 minutes and 11 seconds. Second was Patient Falcon, and third Sojana. The first three boats finished within less than 6 minutes. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123783/image/large-29147f372c1304c0e9ae217410d15be7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123783">First to set off in the pursuit race was Tenacious, the Ted Hood designed 35m sloop, taking part in her first Superyacht Cup event. With a good strong breeze of 25 - 28 knots Tenacious was eagerly chased by the second and third boats to start, Patient Falcon and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/884">Yanneke Too</a>. The 4 - 5m swell from the east! south east certainly provided some exciting sailing and testing conditions but by the end of a tight reach to the first mark Yanneke Too gybed round 'Antigua Rigging' mark to take the lead. After the gybe the course took the yachts on a slightly broader reach down to Curtain Bluff. Yanneke Too, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1454">Timoneer</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana</a> all hoisted extra downwind sails which boosted their positions against the smaller sloops. As the fleet headed up the final beat, a huge black cloud darkened the Antiguan skies, and as the heavens opened the wind picked up with gusts of up to 45 knots. "I didn't want to even look at the instruments in that squall but I did briefly glance up to see 45 knots," commented America's Cup sailor Mike Toppa of North Sails Florida, sailing onboard Yanneke Too. Although several boats suffered minor breakdowns and 'technical hitches' in the rough conditions, all are planning to be ready to head out again for the second race for The Superyacht Cup Antigua 2007 which will start at 12.00 local time, December 14th. Yanneke Too wins Camper & Nicholsons race day 1

Nariida (NOR), the Wally 105 owned by Morten Bergesen, was the first maxi yacht to cross the finish line - at 03.06 am UTC on 7th December 2007 - in the first edition of the Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. After 10 days, 14 hours, 1 minute and 48 seconds of navigation, the 15 crew members crossed the line located off Simpson Bay observed by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s Race Committee and were met by a delegation representing the St Maarten Yacht Club. Nariida covered the 2,650 nautical mile trip from Santa Cruz in Tenerife at an average speed of 10.24 knots. The race is promoted by the International Maxi Association and organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of the Real Club Nautico de Tenerife and the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123766/image/large-ca1d23d91d2700bd85dcaa09e5d1d1bf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123766">“It was an exciting trip,” commented Bergesen on arrival in Palapa Marina this morning. “We had a lot of wind. At the start we hoped to do it in a shorter time but we had a couple of very quiet days but a lot of good wind most of the way, no real accidents no big problems. Looking at our routing I think we couldn’t have done better so now we just have to wait and see what happens with the other boats. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana</a> is our closest competitor and we hear rumours that they are getting more and more wind so we’re following them closely on the tracking and we know exactly when she has to be here to beat us and we’re just as excited as they must be.” Skipper Knut Frostad was also pleased with the real time win: “It was a great race. I was very surprised by the weather system; it was a very unusual weather system and we had a very northerly route, which is not the usual pattern. We worked very hard on our strategy, and it was right, but unfortunately for us in the end we had light winds, and the other guys behind us are going to have more wind, so we don’t know if we’ll be first or second on the handicap but at least we’ll be one or two. The boat stayed together very well and we had a very, very good team on the boat and we had a lot of fun.” After his numerous round-the-world voyages, Frostad also appreciated the comforts that a maxi yacht affords. “Fifty percent of our crew are people who have done round-the-world races with me and they are used to very uncomfortable ways of travelling, so this was a great pleasure for us to eat some nice food and sleep in a nice bed!” Luca Bassani, President of Wally yachts and International Maxi Association member, has been following the race closely and was delighted with <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1910">Nariida</a>’s win “ Congratulations to Morten Bergesen, Knut Frostad and the whole Nariida crew from the entire team at Wally. Congratulations to this boat which we are particularly fond of and which, after 13 years, is still so competitive and so efficient. I am proud to have designed and built her and glad that she has found an owner as passionate as I am.” Peter Harrison’s Sojana (GBR), second in line to finish, was approximately 130 miles away at 16.30 UTC today. She was travelling at approximately 15 knots accompanied by around 18 to 20 knots of northeasterly wind. Sojana, the largest boat in the fleet at 115 feet, is followed by Andrè Auberton’s Dark Shadow (MON), Blue Pearl (GBR), Will Apold’s Valkyrie (CAN), Bernd Kortum’s <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1452">Julie Marie</a> (GER) and Gerhard Ruether’s Zefiro (GER).

Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2007: Nariida takes real-time victory

The yachts taking part in the next Superyacht Cup Antigua have now all arrived and are preparing for the regatta which starts on Wednesday 12th December. Sojana, the Farr designed 35m ketch arrived into Falmouth Harbour this morning (December 8th) having completed a Transatlantic race to St Maarteen. Crossing the line after nearly 12 days at sea, Sojana immediately turned around, no time to even nip ashore and celebrate their arrival, and headed to Antigua to prepare for their next regatta. The Superyacht Cup in Palma which has been running for 12 years, has always supported a local charity, which in the last few years has been 'Joves Navegants' a charitable organisation that provides children of all ages the opportunity to learn to sail. The obvious choice for the SYC in Antigua was to support a similar organisation 'The Antigua Yacht Club Youth Program'. The Antigu! a program has been running since 1992 and has helped over 1500 students from the island by providing an opportunity to learn to sail. In many cases the students have gained a new passion which has helped them progress their education in the marine sector. Three students have gained scholarships to attend Hampton University in the US. A proportion of the SYC yacht entry fee will go straight to the Antigua Yacht Club Youth Programme and a cheque will be presented at the prize-giving dinner on the final night of the regatta on December 15th.

The Superyacht Cup fleet gathers in Antigua

<a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1454">Timoneer</a> the 44.7m Dubois-designed ketch sailed in to Falmouth Harbour in Antigua on November the 29th, completing their transatlantic delivery in a leisurely manner and with time to spare to prepare for the Superyacht Cup Antigua which starts on December 12th. The crossing has been a time to plan for the winter sesason in the Caribbean and continue with on-going maintenance; for the crew there was a change in pace of life onboard as they followed their relatively generous watch schedule. The owners and guests will be flying in to join the crew later in the week. In complete contrast the 35m ketch <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana</a> is racing across the Atlantic, along with 6 other yachts, taking part in theTransatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup from Tenerife to St Maarteen. For Sojana's crew life onboard will be a little more hectic, with sail changes at all times of the day and night, keeping a permanent eye on the weather patterns and constant comparisons with their competitors' positions. The Superyacht Cup brings together these completely different types of superyachts, to sail against each other competively, yet within their own constraints. The overall winner could be the smallest boat, the fastest boat or even the slowest boat, but it will be the boat sailing consistently well and fastest according to their time allowance around the course. With Caribbean hospitality, lively parties and great sailing, I am sure the owners, guests and crew will be glad to have made their way to Antigua which ever way they chose!

Different approaches to Antigua for the Superyacht Cup

The first edition of the Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup sees Morten Bergesen’s Nariida (NOR), a Wally 105 launched in 1994, leading the fleet of seven maxis across the Atlantic Ocean. The Maxi Yachts left Tenerife in the Canary islands on 26th November at 13.00 UTC with the final destination of St Maarten in the Netherland Antilles and the leader has now covered almost 2,000 of the 2,650 nautical mile journey. Promoted by the International Maxi Association and organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) with the support of the Real Club Nautico de Tenerife for the start and the Sint Maarten Yacht Club for the finish. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1910">Nariida</a>’s decision to follow a northerly loop from the start seems to have been the right one although skipper Knut Frostad, reporting yesterday, was cautious about the final results: “We are crossing a massive squall line with rain squalls and lightning. This is the beginning of the front we have to go through to get to the northerly breeze on the other side. Our strategy has been to position ourselves long term for this transmission and to get the best approach to the finish. It’s obviously a tricky and quite unusual situation with the trades completely broken by the low pressure system ahead of us. As it will be less and instable in direction and strength for a while, it opens up some uncertainty depending on where you are positioned. "For us we have been confident in our strategy for a while now, and so far it has paid off as we are now further ahead than we were at any time before. It is obviously a very interesting situation now as our nearest competitor on both corrected time and line honours at the moment, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana</a>, bailed out earlier and chose a completely different strategy, heading south. However, as we all know, corrected time calculations are never realistic until every boat is finished, and if the smaller boats gets more breeze in the end, the picture can change. "We are focusing on having a safe setup as it is critical not to loose any miles on breakdowns or problems during the next 24 hours. I believe the next 48 hours will be the most critical in this whole race.” While Nariida and Sojana (GBR), owned by Peter Harrison, were almost equally positioned 48 hours ago, Nariida has now lengthened her lead and at 14.30 UTC today was approximately 100 nautical miles closer to the finish line than her British rival. Andrè Auberton’s Dark Shadow (MON),was in third place. Will Apold’s Valkyrie (CAN) had moved up to fourth place after choosing a southerly route and was followed by Bernd Kortum’s <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1452">Julie Marie</a> (GER) and Anders Johnson’s Blue Pearl (GBR),with these last two practically neck-and-neck. Zefiro (GER), owned by Gerhard Ruether, rounded up the fleet. Will Apold’s last update showed the typical good spirits this Canadian crew has displayed form the start despite having some equipment problems: “We are sailing a southerly approach to the finish having been first to dive south to get under the mixed weather ahead. The weather conditions are superb. The weather at present is 20 knots from the east allowing Valkyrie to slide off the waves adding to its speed. Valkyrie has had its gear problems since this is the second race for the boat, so there have been gear issues including the loss of a halyard resulting in the dropping of the spinnaker overboard. The kite was recovered and the minor damage repaired. We lost our heavy A5 chute when the head separated from the body resulting in a second 'ALL HANDS ON DECK. ' Crew members arrived in various states of dress or undress as we struggled to pull the chute on board. The chute was recovered but is damaged beyond repair for the facilities on board.” Although this is the first time they have all sailed together, Alpold is confident in his crew’s ability: “The crew is all from the Halifax area of Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada and have been normally sailing against each other in small boats. Ten of the 13 crew are members of the Bedford Basin Yacht Club and two of the others are former members. This is the first time that this group has sailed together on Valkyrie although they are familiar with each other's sailing styles. As we say in Canada, ‘Now it is up to us to put the puck in the net!’ The crew is pumped and we are sailing well.” The prize giving for the event is scheduled to take place on 14th December in St Maarten and will see the overall winner under IRC handicap receiving the Rolex Trophy and timepiece. There will also be trophies for the winner in real time and the first IMA member under handicap.

Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2007:  Tactics  begin to count

1st December 2007. After six days of navigation a battle for the lead is heating up in the Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup which sees seven maxi yachts crossing the Atlantic westward from Tenerife to St Maarten. Promoted by the International Maxi Association and organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of the Real Club Nautico de Tenerife and the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, the race started on 26th November, and the leading yachts have now covered approximately half of the 2650 nautical mile trip. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123748/image/large-c7b4e053ad4f805006db9803429c86a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123748">Morten Bergsen’s <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1910">Nariida</a> (NOR), which has led the fleet for the duration of the race, is now facing a strong challenge from Peter Harrison’s <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293">Sojana</a>. The two leading yachts are following different courses with Nariida sticking to the northerly route that she has followed from the start while Sojana chose to head further south sometime yesterday and at 10.30 UTC was approaching 23N 40W while Nariida was nearing 27N 42W. The two are so close in fact, that it is becoming difficult to tell exactly which is leading but their positions at 11.00 UTC translated to Nariida, a Wally 105, being approximately 1278 nautical miles away from the finish line while Sojana, a Farr 115, must cover another 1292 nm. Both were travelling at approximately 15 knots and Nariida reported blue skies, sunshine and around 18 to 20 knots of wind from 090°. Nariida and Sojana are followed by Andrè Auberton’s Dark Shadow (MON), Blue Pearl (GBR), Bernd Kortum’s <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1452">Julie Marie</a> (GER) and Will Apold’s Valkyrie (CAN). Gerhard Ruether’s Zefiro (GER), in seventh place, had an encounter with an unidentified object, possibly a net, during the course of Thursday night, which slowed the boat considerably before the crew were able to disentangle themselves by heaving to and drifting backwards until free. Most of the crews are settling into the fairly stable trade wind conditions and although Valkyrie has reported passing several boats competing in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, most encounters are with the Atlantic’s marine life: Julie Marie was accompanied for 30 minutes yesterday by two whales while the crew of Valkyrie will be lunching on some of the flying fish which landed on their deck this morning. The fleet can expect winds to remain at approximately 15 to 18 knots over the next 24 hours as they move round to become south – south easterly this afternoon and southerly by midday tomorrow.

Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2007: Sojana closes in on Nariida 

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands. 26th November 2007. The seven maxi yachts taking part in the first edition of the Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup set off at 13.05 UTC today, bound for the Caribbean island of St Maarten, just over 3,000 miles (2,600 nautical miles) away across the Atlantic Ocean.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/123722/image/large-eedcfb5ce6e58b3a799495c6fe32e259.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123722" class="legacy">Organizers the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, with the support of the local Real Club Nautico de Tenerife, positioned the starting line just north of the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and set a windward mark at approximately 1.5 nautical miles, thereby providing the many spectator boats with a breathtaking sight as they followed some of the largest sailing boats in the world up the coast against the backdrop of the magnificent Mount Teide volcano. Winds on the starting line were light, approximately 10 knots, and north-easterly, but would soon increase as the fleet left the shelter of the coast and moved into the channel between Tenerife and its southerly neighbour the island of Gran Canaria, with gusts reaching up to 30 knots.With seven maxi yachts competing and crews ranging from eight to 15, a total of around 100 sailors assembled in Tenerife for the start, ranging from an all amateur crew aboard Will Apold’s Valkyrie (CAN) to Volvo Ocean Race and Whitbread Race veteran Knut Frostad on Morten Bergsen’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1910" data-legacy="true" href="#managed-by-application">Nariida</a> (NOR) and America’s Cup sailors such as Mal Parker (Victory Challenge) on board Peter Harrison’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1293" data-legacy="true" href="#managed-by-application">Sojana</a> (GBR). The atmosphere on the docks was jubilant before the maxis cast off today with many smiles raised when Valkyrie began blasting out, quite appropriately, a rousing chorus of Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” that was followed by a round of applause from competitors, press and spectators alike.Once out on the race course things got more serious. The largest two maxis in the fleet, Sojana (115 feet) and Nariida (104 feet) got off to an excellent start despite the light winds which would normally tend to favour the smaller yachts. The Norwegian boat rounded the windward mark just ahead of Sojana with Anders Johnson’s Blue Pearl (GBR) in third place. The majority of the fleet then headed towards the middle of the channel before turning southwest and proceeding down around the southern tip of the island where only La Gomera and El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, lie between them and a 3,000 mile stretch of Atlantic Ocean. Only <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1452" data-legacy="true" href="#managed-by-application">Julie Marie</a> (GER), a newly launched Swan 100 owned by Bernd Kortüm, and Gerhard Reuther’s Zefiro&nbsp;(GER) chose to stick close to the Tenerfie coastline for the descent towards open seas.IMA President Peter Offen, who was part of the driving force behind creating this event, was unfortunately unable to compete with his <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/200" data-legacy="true" href="#managed-by-application">Y3K</a> due to mechanical problems but was on the starting line to see his fellow maxi owners off. “There were perfect conditions at the start, the start was nicely organized. It was bit of a surprise to see some of the boats start so cautiously: one had a reef main and one had a number three jib which may have been over-cautious. Of course it’s great to be able to follow the ships on the tracking system and to see the two Wallys in the lead, they are used to racing so much you see. It is also interesting to see Blue Pearl, which is the smallest boat in the fleet and she is in third position. Of course, over the next ten days there will be many wind shifts and many changes of position but if you look at Nariida’s speed at the moment, around 18 knots, if she keeps that up it will be a very quick passage."Late this afternoon the fleet was rounding the southern tip of Tenerife led by Nariida. Provisions for the next 24 hours see winds moving around towards east and dropping to approximately 10 to 15 knots. Competitors are free to choose their own course as there are no marks to be observed along the route. Transatlantic Maxi Race starts from Tenerife

CNI’s presence at the Fort Lauderdale Show (FLIBS07) was their most successful to date with some stunning yachts on display, including the 48m <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/768">Kanaloa</a> from CRN, the 35m Azure Leisure form Palmer Johnson, and a 35m Benetti Classic <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/333">Grand Coroto</a>, amongst many others on display at one of CNI’s two locations at the Face Dock and the Las Olas Marina where new CA <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1243">Griff</a> was shown. CNI had an extremely successful show with some brokers announcing numerous offers on just the second day. CNI’s VIP treatment Reflecting the social scene, CNI hosted a couple of fun events during the show, including the annual Captain’s Dinner, held once again at Chima on Las Olas Blvd, in association with Bank of America. Global Marine Travel (GMT) graciously donated an air ticket for a raffle won by Captain Andre Peens of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/81">Princess Mariana</a>. CNI’s Crewed Affair crew party, now in its third year, was held on the Friday preceding the show. This year CNI partnered with Dockwalk magazine and GMT in hosting what has become a really fun pre-show party. Over 400 crew, captains and friends, attended. This year CNI brought a Carbon Neutral dimension to their participation with a fleet of hybrid cars to chauffeur clients around the show in. The distinctive green pennants could be seen from quite some distance which was useful considering the inordinate amount of traffic. Those who came to CNI’s VIP outdoor lounge were ushered into the indoor Café due to the weather. The food was superb and ensured that a crowd of guests (and CNI staff) packed it every day of the show. The ISS held their annual gala dinner on 25 October at the Marriott Harbour Drive to a Polynesian theme. In Mr Nicholson’s absence the award was picked up by CNI’s CEO Jillian Montgomery. The event also saw Maltese Falcon snatch up a series of awards. CNI’s presence took a new form this year at the 17th Monaco Yacht Show with single and double-tiered stands on the Quai des Etats-Unis. For the third consecutive year CNI, in partnership with the Monaco Yacht Show, made the show CarbonNeutral, by measuring the source and levels of greenhouse gases produced from the travel, electricity and waste of the exhibiting companies – as well as the electricity and waste of the yachts and stands – and offsetting them with dedicated programmes. The social scene at the show saw CNI hosting several events including the CNI Gala Dinner, a CNI cocktail evening at the Monaco Yacht Club, a CNI crew party at the Miramar, as well as an evening onboard the 50m <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/195">Andale</a>. On the eve of the opening of the show, CNI started its long series of social events with a splendid evening at the Yacht Club de Monaco, in association with Mercedes and Sotheby’s Realty. The annual CNI gala evening, in association with Kaupthing Singer &amp; Friedlander, and in collaboration with Cartier and Mercedes, took place at the Monte Carlo Beach Hotel on Wednesday 19th September, in the presence of 220 select clients and friends. Guests were invited to race America’s Cup replica models from the Gstaad Yacht Club on the pool whilst enjoying wine tastings supplied by Ficoffi, followed by a gourmet dinner by the pool, with a stunning jewellery and fashion show by Cartier and Lanvin between courses, and entertainment by magicians.
