With the MYBA Charter Show around the corner, we take a look at the yacht lineup for the 2025 edition of this highly anticipated event. 

Next month, the first edition of SuperYacht Times’ <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/213" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit">Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit</a> takes place in Hong Kong. Yet this position allowed me to forge my own identity and explore my creative vision freely. Over the years, the industry demographics have undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming more inclusive and diverse.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luigi Sturchio (Company)">Luigi Sturchio</a> was a pioneering figure in innovating the world of yacht interior design and he played a crucial role in influencing my career as an interior designer. During that period, the industry primarily utilised mahogany and cherry woods, accompanied by fabrics featuring white and blue stripes, embracing a colour palette that evoked the essence of the sea. Drawing from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luigi Sturchio (Company)">Sturchio's</a> example, I developed my distinct personality as a designer, ultimately leading to iconic projects like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a>, which revolutionised the perception of yacht interior design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213165/image/large-63f2109c57501d0d15da5336e6ac5876.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213165">You have had the opportunity to work on numerous prestigious projects. Can you share one of your most memorable experiences from this period and what made it stand out to you?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a> remains one of the most innovative projects I've worked on to this day. It holds a unique place in my heart and was truly ahead of its time when we embarked on the project in 2008. She was one of the first yachts that aimed to incorporate and emphasise &nbsp;sustainability, a concept that was not widely explored in yachting at the time. Typically, yachts would have innovative exteriors designed by experts like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a>, but the interiors often remained traditional. Collaborating with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen</a>, who is a good friend of mine, on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a> allowed us to break down the boundaries between the two areas and create a harmonious design language that extended from the exterior to the interior, which allowed the interior features to reflect the characteristic expressions found externally. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280401/image/large-274d4a1036c0431a87072f9420369148.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280401">One of the standout features of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a> was her extraordinary glass panels, which I conceptualised as dynamic paintings, constantly transforming and enhancing the interior ambiance. Initially, I explored the idea of using Perspex blinds illuminated with LEDs, but soon realised that this would obstruct the breathtaking views outside. Instead, we ingeniously used the stanchions as light sources, allowing a warm and embracing glow to penetrate from the ceiling, creating a beautifully illuminated interior that perfectly complemented the yacht's surroundings. This innovative use of linear lighting was highly appreciated and has since become a trendsetter in the industry, inspiring the design of many other yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280402/image/large-5f0cb7518211ce6b0bb883526784e78a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280402">Innovation extended to other aspects as well, such as the design of filtering zones between saloons and exterior decks. This ingenious concept offered a dual functionality, allowing these spaces to be shared, interacted with, and even enclosed, creating versatile environments that seamlessly transitioned between indoor and outdoor settings. Moreover, using teak both inside and outside, along with these filtering zones, allowed for enhanced natural airflow, effectively reducing the reliance on air conditioning and adopting a more environmentally friendly approach.Could you provide us with some insights into the latest design trends that have recently emerged in the world of yacht design?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280406/image/large-8677abf169687c9e0c48657de8dee75a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280406"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280405/image/large-a9b6cfa05a28f8903c28cb7bac2219d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280405">I find that designing a yacht with the traditional approach from a few years ago no longer holds much relevance. For me, it’s essential to incorporate new concepts and principles related to sustainability. Since 2018, I've been working on designs that aim to change the onboard lifestyle. Recently, scientific calculations have shown that the impact of propulsion is equal to, if not lower than, that of the hotel load. This realisation justified my feeling that while propulsion relies on technological advancements and innovation, interior designers like me can play a significant role in modifying the onboard lifestyle for clients. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280407/image/large-9ef5230bf594b2f12b393043a604f407.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280407"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280409/image/large-1fb324d295df95fdc22ab183f5905afe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280409">For me, luxury doesn't necessarily mean excess and extravagance. My objective is to show clients that they do not have to compromise on anything, but can expand their vision and embrace a luxurious lifestyle, while respecting certain criteria of sustainability. While luxury in the '90s and early 2000s was often associated with a materialistic mindset of &nbsp;'I have, therefore, I am', <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a> tried to convey the idea that luxury is about living certain experiences, going beyond mere possessions – something that we should all strive for. Moreover, I sincerely hope that I have made significant contributions, especially in the realm of interior aspects.&nbsp;Do you have any valuable insights or advice that you would like to offer to other aspiring young designers?Whenever I conduct classes at the Polytechnic University in Milan, I try to inspire students to challenge themselves and perceive yachts as a functioning organism. While aesthetics certainly plays a crucial role, they should be viewed as the “skin” that adorns the vessel. The true essence in designing a yacht lies in ensuring the yacht operates efficiently and harmoniously. International Women's Day 2018: Inspiring women in yachting 

Founded in 1927 in the quaint sailing town of Lymington, Laurent Giles Naval Architects has recently celebrated the milestone of their 90th anniversary in business. With over 1400 yacht projects under their belt, the brand has firmly stood the test of time, a true testament to the generations of support for the brand. We recently sat down with Managing Director, David Lewis, who gave an insight into keeping a small English studio alive for almost a century.

Speaking candidly about his personal journey into the industry, Lewis explains where his passion for yachting really began. “I guess my love for the industry started with a love for sailing, I sailed with my family from a very young age. When I left home I did a boat building course in Falmouth for a year before moving on to do a degree at Southampton Solent University.” Interestingly, it was during this time at university that Lewis was first introduced to the Laurent Giles studio, “One of my lecturers, Stephen Wallis, was a director at Laurent Giles. The week I graduated, he offered me a position and it was from there that my involvement in the industry grew right up until 2008 when I was appointed Managing Director of the firm and became a major shareholder in the company.”

Throughout his time at Laurent Giles, Lewis has witnessed the company’s focus evolve from traditional sailing yachts to high-performance racing yachts and more recently, on to superyachts. Looking at the progression of the brand, Lewis talked us through the history and heritage behind the name. “When Jack Laurent Giles started the business in 1927, many of his early designs were what we would call gentleman’s sailing yachts. Though the performance was always paramount, the yachts of this era were substantially smaller than what they are today.”

It was during the following years that ‘Laurent Giles’ became more than just a name, and truly evolved into the brand that it is today. “The 60s was a hugely productive design period for the firm with major large yacht projects becoming the norm,” says Lewis. With technicalities at the forefront of design, Jack Giles and his partners went on to embrace greater architectural complexities on an increasingly large scale. “He (Jack Giles) was quite an innovative person, he pursued performance and technology and it is that very DNA and heritage that still drives us today.” Indeed, from pioneering projects such as the 34-metre Blue Leopard to new concepts like the 110-metre motor sailor, Project Atlas, it is easy to see this thread of passion woven throughout the rich tapestry of the studio’s history.

Looking to their involvement in the superyacht industry, it is only in more recent years that Laurent Giles has truly ventured into the larger league. “Though the company has always had a heritage of doing big yachts it was around the year 2000 when we started working with Devonport Management Limited (DML) that we got into the superyacht business.” From the 58.5-metre superyacht The Other Woman to the 77-metre Samar, the designs have continued to evolve both stylistically and structurally yet it remains overwhelmingly evident that whilst the size of boats have grown, their legacy of the brand has lived on uncompromised.

Building on their firm foundations, Laurent Giles has expanded and evolved into a multi-faceted firm of dynamic naval architects, yacht designers and engineers with the skills and services provided by the studio stretching across the boundaries of the various disciplines. As Lewis explains, however, this isn’t the norm, “Back when I started in the industry, the naval architect was also the designer, the engineer, they would have all the skills in their toolbox. Whereas in the superyacht industry these trades have since been divided up.” Though they are commonly overlooked for their role in the design process, Lewis explains their involvement in all aspects. “For quite a long time we focused on naval architecture in the superyacht industry, however, we have always given a lot of support for the designers and for the shipyards, so officially expanding our expertise into exterior design and general design seemed like the natural thing to do.” The combination of practice is where the firm's strengths really lie. “We welcome projects that have a technical idea behind them and we build the design around that. It’s a sort of holistic, naval architectural design process that is behind every product.”

Though this holistic, naval architectural approach has been truly fundamental in the 1400 projects produced by the studio, naval architects still remain the unsung heroes of the superyacht industry (as we spoke about in our last issue featuring <a href="http://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/bmt-nigel-gee-making-naval-architecture-cool" target="_blank">BMT Nigel Gee</a>). It is easy to see how the essential architectural input from smaller studios such as Laurent Giles slips under the radar. “A lot of what we do goes largely unnoticed and people are totally unaware of it. It’s difficult to discuss because it is seen as boring, people think it only becomes exciting when you can see, touch and feel a project.” As put by Lewis, “Owners expect their boat to float and we are the people that make that happen. There is a slightly sexy side to naval architecture, it’s not really quite as boring as people think!”

Though clients over recognition remain the primary focus, Laurent Giles’ dedication to innovation and advancements in the yacht building process is interesting. Superyacht design remains highly traditional at the request of owners, yet a strong emphasis of the Laurent Giles studio is the consistent and committed pursuit of the latest developments in new materials and methods, pushing the boundaries of conventional design.

Looking to the future of superyacht design, ecology and efficiency are at the forefront of focus for Lewis and his team. “We try to keep on top of anything that is up and coming and when there is an opportunity to use something that is new, we try to incorporate it into our design. Certainly, more recently, a lot of emphases has been put on green or eco parts of vessels and seeing if that is something we can integrate into our industry. From diesel electric engines to solar panels and glazing, we try and engage with all products in a well thought out manner. Rather than just creating a typical yacht and sticking solar panels on it, we incorporate the design from the very beginning and that is crucial. Eco aspects of designs are becoming increasingly important and I think many vessels will continue to incorporate this in future.”

HEMY

With a desire to drive the ecological evolution in design, the studio has unveiled a high-efficiency motor yacht or HEMY for short. Maintaining performance as a priority, the team have miraculously managed to create an environmentally conscious design that upholds the same luxurious standards of living, whilst drastically reducing output. “The HEMY is a great example of an environmentally friendly superyacht. At 110-metres it is a very large vessel but it uses the same power as a 72-metre yacht to do two knots more.”

From the 72-metre Stella Maris to the 76.88-metre Samar, Laurent Giles has certainly worked on many distinguished designs over the years. Showing no signs of slowing down and with a busy year ahead, Lewis talks us through what is in store for the brand in the upcoming months. “We have got quite a few things happening right now, we’re doing a 90-metre refit at the moment which we have been heavily involved in for quite some time. We’re also just about to launch a very efficient 32.3-metre semi-displacement vessel in Turkey.”

After only being for sale on the market for three months, Burgess have reported the sale of the 72m Viareggio Superyachts’ (VSY) Stella Maris. She features a design by the renowned Espen Oeino, with a matching contemporary interior by Michela Reverberi. Burgess worked in cooperation with Superyachts Monaco to finalise the deal.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156167/image/large-ab78cb3e778750b273486aab51f981a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156167">Laurent Giles Naval Architects designed a platform that would house a number of advanced engineering features to set Stella Maris apart form her size-class. VSY informs us, that their latest launch, the 72 metre Stella Maris, is now certified by the world-leading HCA (Helideck Certification Agency). Despite her impressive length, Stella Maris is one of the smallest superyachts in the world to carry this certificate. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/143302/image/large-aa43ea4edc16a7de9cf77785091b759e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141534">In fact, superyacht Stella Maris is one of only 4 superyachts worldwide, to have received the certificate. Recently, the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Large Commercial Yacht code (LY2) has been modified in the interests of greater security, and standards have been fixed to ensure security during take-off and landing as well as reduce accidents and injury to a minimum. These standards define restrictive guidelines for some key elements in the design and operation of helidecks; guidelines which have been scrupulously followed by VSY and the whole design team of Stella Maris. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/143303/image/large-b98a52757857f7cd7630744318688181.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/143303">The result is an approved Eurocopter EC 135 helideck for use by day or night whether with Side Landings or those practiced by the Royal Navy. The superyacht features exterior design by Zuccon International Project, who worked in close collaboration with the CRN Technical Office. SYT Top 10: The ten largest yachts ever built in Italy

The resulting layout ensures a volume, more usually seen in yachts of greater dimensions, of 2,270 GRT. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141535/image/large-7146c0e5d9aaeed1798e5619c3576bba.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140949">In Monaco we also learned that the yard is full of green solutions, such as the use of recyclable materials in their superyachts, engines able to run on high quality fuels, resulting in a drastic reduction of harmful emissions, water treatment systems that produce biologically transparent and odourless discharges, electric auxiliary engines for use in port which eliminate the need for the main engine, and a green anchoring system which stations the yacht by dynamic positioning for use where traditional anchoring is prohibited due to danger of damage, such as on coral reefs or in Scandinavian fjords. VSY's 72 metre flagship Stella Maris wows the crowds

The 52nd Genoa International Boat Show opened on Saturday. The show features 900 participating exhibitors, over 1,400 on display on a more-than-200 thousand square-metre exhibition area including four pavilions, large outdoor spaces and two equipped marinas and featuring a new layout. Stella Maris, a 72-metre yacht by Viareggio Superyachts, is the show’s largest yacht. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141207/image/large-e60160ff02972bdd8f9d8026f9bb89a8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140949">The layout of the Boat Show, which extends over four pavilions, two marinas and large outdoor areas overlooking the sea, has evolved over the years to ensure the best possible product arrangement; easily identifiable colour-coded routes will lead visitors to the section they are most interested in: grey will identify accessories, red sailing boats, light blue power boats, and blue mega-yachts. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141208/image/large-18a0ab5d7942c8225bf7d165abcd880c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141208">The diving sector will be back at the Show after thirty years in a dedicated area set up by Confisub, while the shopping area will be near the section devoted to tourism, services and electronic equipment in the first gallery of Pavilion S. Pavilion C has also undergone some major layout changes: a central exhibition area will host the stands of the most important technical/nautical apparel brands and will serve as a temporary show and shopping space, with product presentations, fashion shows, conferences and meetings that will follow a specific schedule, while the shopping area will be open to the public at all times. Pavilion C will also be the brand-new location of the Sea Theatre, where interesting events will alternate with those of the temporary show &amp; shopping space. Pavilion C will still be hosting B2B meetings; to its more-than-aware public and to professional operators Genoa International Boat Show will once again offer TechTrade, the section devoted to components and accessories for pleasure boating. Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th will be the b2b preferential days. Sailing boats will be on display in Marina 1, a central location that will ensure high visibility to all participating companies. Sailing accessories and equipment will be in the Mondoinvela area in Pavilion D, which has been reopened specifically to ensure product continuity with the crafts on display in the water. A couple of weeks ago we reported the pre-launch of Viareggio Superyachts' (VSY) 72 metre flagship Stella Maris, designed by Espen Oeino. Live from Italy: Launch of 72 metre superyacht Stella Maris

Later this summer the Italian shipyard Viareggio Superyachts (VSY) will take to the stage in Monaco with a brand-new stand in Parvis Piscine. Of course, their new look will be in line with the yard’s values and reflect the fusion of avant-garde technology and the excellence of genuine Italian craftsmanship in the total respect of the environment, thanks to the many eco-sustainable systems installed on their yachts. Leading up to the show, the yard has released details about their new flagship, Stella Maris. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140052/image/large-2df88340b407eeee2039faa45d817846.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139944">After the resounding success of the two previous 62-metre yachts Candyscape II and RoMa, this year their 72-metre Stella Maris will make her debut. Scheduled for launching in July, she represents a definite step forward for the yard and, being the largest yacht built in Viareggio over the last 30 years, she is destined to be a point of reference for the yachting world. The project – entrusted to the expertise of the architect Espen Øino in cooperation with Laurent Giles Naval Architects - is blending traditional elements of design and layout with new variations on a theme – such as the staggered internal decks, the heights of the saloons and the innovative form of the bow. The resulting layout ensures a volume, more usually seen in yachts of greater dimensions, of 2,270 GRT. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140053/image/large-ab0456a39ec1990052418c2d54dccf89.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139945">The yacht is equipped with a certified helideck, making Stella Maris the only yacht of her size with this facility, a deck for the exclusive use of guests, a separate Owner’s deck, saloons with a finished height of 270 cm and the pleasure - which must surely be an exclusive novelty - of enjoying green landscapes at sea with real house-plants crossing the decks. Concepts of the internal and external spaces are interpreted in a very unconventional way. Viareggio Superyachts (VSY) have launched their 72 metre flagship Stella Maris, designed by Espen Oeino. Managing Director of VSY, Luciano Scaramuccia stated that the impressiveness of this 72 metre, conceived in line with the yard’s values and reflecting the fusion of avant-garde technology and the excellence of genuine Italian craftsmanship in full respect of the environment, crowns her as the most important yacht of this size built in Viareggio over the last 30 years. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139944/image/large-d922e384af67a344ac644f75d2fa57d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139944">This event of considerable importance for the whole community as well as the yard itself, was celebrated with the workers, local authorities and bodies, all of whom have collaborated with VSY over many intense months. Viareggio SuperYachts launches Chinese website

At the latest Super Yacht Design Symposium held in October in Palm Beach, Viareggio Superyacht’s Managing Director, Federico Bennewitz, explained how to overcome the technical challenges of using glass as a construction material on the 72-metre Stella Maris. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137518/image/large-98fd471f463faa09ab7051866599aa95.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136692">Invited to join the speakers’ panel on “The use of glass on super yachts”, Bennewitz shared with the audience some of the problems faced and the solutions taken in order to meet with the client’s main wishes to have a villa-like feeling on the yacht, to maximize the pleasure of life on board in all seasons of the year, to assure the best privacy for himself and his guests and to have a certified helideck. The project - entrusted to the expertise of the architect Espen Øino in cooperation with Laurent Giles Naval Architects – has in fact been developed to blend traditional elements of design and layout with new variations on a theme - such as the staggered internal decks, the ceiling height in the main saloons raised to 270 cm and the large glass walls and windows. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137519/image/large-0de096c419c4ea98cfcc6d7b1996eae9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137519">The internal and external spaces of Stella Maris has in fact been interpreted in a very unconventional way, introducing spectacular glass walls, such as in the two main saloons and the Owner’s cabin, thus allowing the eye to see and enjoy beyond what would normally be a rigid barrier. Following the success of their 62-metre super yachts, Candyscape II and RoMa, VSY-Viareggio Superyachts are now busy completing their next two superyachts, the 72 metre Stella Maris scheduled for the 2012 season, and the 64 metre Duchess of Tuscany II, an evolution of Candyscape II and RoMa, which is currently being offered for sale by the yard, for completion in 2013. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136692/image/large-8ef77eaf6a69b9483f7cd01cab4ee4f6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136692">The spectacular 72 metre Stella Maris represents a clear step forward for the yard and is conceived to be taken as a future reference point for the market. The project, designed by Espen Oeino in cooperation with Laurent Giles Naval Architects, is blending traditional elements of design with new ideas and solutions, creating a yacht with a much larger than expected volume. The yacht is equipped with a certified helideck, a separate owner’s deck, saloons with a ceiling height of 270 cm and a green garden feature, spread out over multiple decks. The interior design by Studio Reverberi features the use of natural stone, fresh fabrics and veneers, and plenty of light.
