As part of our history series from revered in-house yacht historian, Malcolm Wood, SYT takes a closer look at yacht builders that are, for one reason or another, no longer in existence. This issue we explore the French builder Chantiers Navals de l’Esterel situated to the west of Cannes in the La Bocca area on the road to La Napoule.The yard was in existence in the 1930s and the company was officially established following WWII for the repair of wooden yachts damaged in the conflict. Their expertise in working with this material would result in numerous orders for wooden motor yachts from the 1960s until the late 1980s.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31595/image/large-03b81ffcb13802959d4231b5ae2ea8b7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31595">Tianca IIAlthough Esterel was known for its production of fast motor yachts the first yacht they built over 18 metres was Naagh, a Bermudan-rigged cutter of 20.4 metres designed by Andre Mauric. This yacht was delivered to her French owner Rene Combastet in 1951.Bernina, the first motor yacht, was completed for her Belgian owner in 1954. It measured 19 metres and featured a mahogany hull with oak frames. All yachts built by the yard used mahogany as the hull material except for one, delivered near the cessation of yacht building that was built of aluminium.Their first yacht over 24-metres was La Bouffonne, delivered in 1959, and the first over 30 metres was the Carinthia IV of 1964, measuring an impressive 42 metres. This latter yacht was fitted with twin 18 cyl. Napier Deltic engines developing a total of 6,200 hp (4,562 kW) providing a maximum speed of 34 knots. Quite outstanding for a yacht of this size in the 1960s. Sadly this yacht sank following a fire in 1981 when named Sylvana C.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31593/image/large-373e5d84fc3d845bcec2b7fa28d6f599.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31593">Carinthia IVMost Esterel yachts were designed by Andre Mauric with several having Jon Bannenberg penned exteriors and interiors. Nine yachts were delivered in the 1960s including the aforementioned Carinthia IV and the 32.5-metre Silvercross, a three-deck motor yacht fitted with twin Mercedes diesels of 1350hp and capable of 27 knots. Silvercross was damaged by fire at San Remo in the early 1980s and was then purchased by Greek owners.The 1970s saw another five yachts completed including three of 26 metres, the 31.9-metre Xiphias and the 33.1-metre Arjuna. One of the 26 metres, the La Feline, went to Canada and is currently for sale.The Jon Bannenberg designed 42-metre Acajou with her varnished mahogany hull was delivered in 1983 and was hailed as one of the most beautiful yachts of its time.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31596/image/large-cacbc826d4f8dc1bba4dc6d4624af386.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31596">AcajouAcajou was badly damaged in the storm at Piraeus when the harbour wall collapsed. She has been rebuilt as Sureyya now but without the varnished hull.The last three yachts delivered in the mid-1980s had exterior lines by Paolo Caliari with naval architecture by Andre Mauric. They were all over 30 metres, two had mahogany hulls but the last yacht completed, Esterel of Cannes, had an aluminium hull and superstructure.&nbsp;In 1987 the Esterel yard transferred its operations to the Ile Ste. Marguerite off Cannes to switch focus on the maintenance and repair of wooden yachts.In addition to building yachts, the company also built a large number of naval patrol boats for Tunisia, Algeria, and other former French colonies.One notable conversion was the 33-metre Esterel built naval patrol boat A.E.C. Ancelle that was rebuilt in 2003 by the WS yard in Savona and became the motor yacht Tempest WS.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31598/image/large-0b0a498e4f6c24cd49cba74cd15f68ad.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31598">Tempest WSIn the meantime, Esterel was busy rebuilding the 30.5-metre wooden Greek-built Arvi into the charter yacht Clara One in 2003 for operation in the Western Mediterranean.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/31592/image/large-3215d4b7762acbc5cbaffe4f6ad6228f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31592">Intrigue Although Esterel no longer builds yachts from scratch, they built up a reputation for quality. That reputation attracted such clients as Helmut Horten, Harold Robbins (the novelist), the Ojjeh family, Jacky Setton and the Greek shipowning families of Goulandris and Embiricos. The wooden yacht is powered by twin Baudoin engines, which enable her to reach a top speed of 21 knots. Last year that yacht was sold by Camper &amp; Nicholsons International and Thierry Voisin.By Merijn de Waard

The 34.55m yacht is designed by French designer André Mauric, who also designed <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/651">Tempest WS</a> &amp; <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1217">Alcyone</a>. Before she was named Shaha, she was well known under the name Jack &amp; Jill. These days Shaha can often be found in Valletta, Malta and during the summer she cruises in the Mediterranean.

A collection of new listings hit the seas last month at CNI. From the European offices these include the 43.3m/142’ Griff from Marinteknik and the 23m/75’ Alias from Arno, both listed by Mike Payne from CNI Antibes. Also listed with CNI Antibes is the 24.2m/79.4’ Flacon Dairo One listed with Charles Ehrardt. On the other side of the Atlantic the 30.6m/100’ Spirit of Ashanti from Tecnomarine is listed with Fernando Nicholson from CNI Miami. Georges Bourgoignie from CNI Miami announces the launch of the 30.5m/100’ <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/179">Rapture</a> from Southern Wind Shipyards, South Africa. She launched from the shipyard for the installation of its rig, sea trials, and fine-tuning to complete the final details before delivery to her new owner later this month. Her launch will be celebrated early December in Cape Town. Arne Ploch from CNI Palma announces the signing of a 45m/147.8’ <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1882">Factoria Naval de Marin</a> due for delivery in May 2009. Her exterior is design by Reymond Langton and exclusive Spadolini interior will include five cabins for ten gests and a further five cabins for seven crew. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123701/image/large-7021f0feb0e06243805a3f6cdd713299.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123701">Staying on this side of the Atlantic, Charles Ehrardt announces the signing of the 41m/ 135’ Mondomarine. Sistership to the <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/75">Streamline</a> no.2 (photo), she will be delivered at the beginning of 2009 and still has the choice of two different superstructures and deck versions. She will delivered MCA compliant with zero speed stabilizers and RINA Green Star certified. Sales Bill Sanderson of CNI Palm Beach is please to announce the sale of the 43.3m/141’ Azure Leisure. Following the feeding frenzy of the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, the yacht was sold in style after three offers were submitted on just the second day of the show. Built by Palmer Johnson and designed by Terence Disdale, this world-class luxury yacht has accommodation for ten guests in five elegantly appointed staterooms. Her sun deck boasts a large Jacuzzi and sun pads for lounging, whilst the expansive bridge deck features covered seating and the elegantly appointed main saloon with its full wet bar and loaded entertainment system is generously equipped for large parties or intimate gatherings. Bill Sanderson has also announced that the new 45m/148’ Perini <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/43">Helios</a> has been sent on her maiden voyage from Viargeggio to the Cape Verde Islands where the owner will board her for a cruise before she heads off to the Caribbean for the winter. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123702/image/large-2be03dc1628a818ecbe24e952c0d1b7b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123702">Jonathan Syrett of CNI Palma is pleased to announce the sale of the 40.6m/133.4’ Royal Huisman designed <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/242">Surama</a> (photo). A spectacular top pedigree yacht, Surama is sistership to the famous <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/701">Anakena</a>. She was totally refitted at her mother shipyard, the Royal Huisman, with new engines, electronics, sails, interior and exterior painting, new computers and software and re-caulking of teak decks. Following the Cannes Boat Show in September, Arne Ploch from CNI Palma announces the sale of the 24.1m/79’ Pink Champagne. The stunning Maiora 24 features a contemporary four cabin interior in beautiful flame mahogany and cream leather. A tender garage on her foredeck leaves ample sun bathing space on the flybridge, and her huge swimming platform and ample toy storage. Another sale following the Cannes Boat Show, with CNI London broker Toby Walker, is the newly launched 2007 43m <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/540">Emerald Star</a> from CRN. Both seller and buyer were represented by Toby and this magnificent yacht will be fully managed and for charter through CNI. CNI Cannes are delighted to announce the sale of the 32m/105’ <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/651">Tempest</a> built by Esterel in 1963 and refit in 2003. A truly unique Motor Yacht. Originally built as a Patrol vessel, she underwent a complete rebuild in 2003 and today offers four luxuriously appointed cabins, and is fitted with latest navigation and communication equipment. Also sold is the 26.1m/85.6’ Natori; launched by CTM Falcon, Italy in 2003, she was built to the highest specifications and offers luxurious accommodation for eight guests in four cabins. Charter Expect to see some new names among existing favourites as the CNI charter division welcomes back the 39.7m/130’ <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/748">Parvati</a> (photo) from CRN Ancona (previously know as Elisabeth F), she has been through an extensive interior and exterior refit to give her a more comfortable and elegant feel throughout. This classic yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 cabins and is available in the Caribbean this winter and in the Mediterranean for summer 2008. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/123703/image/large-00d525e84b4d6508ece433f1c990593b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123703">The luxury exploration vessel <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/65">VvS1</a> is heading down under to New Zealand for the winter season.
