After dabbling with the idea of becoming a lawyer, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/58" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luca Dini Design & Architecture (Company)">Luca Dini’</a>s career as a yacht designer got off the ground when he joined the office of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pierluigi Spadolini (Company)">Pierluigi Spadolini</a>, arguably the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Jon Bannenberg</a> of Italian yacht design. Since then he has created exterior and interior solutions for over 3,500 linear metres of yachts. Today, he is one of the leading designers of his generation with projects in build for brands such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a>. We recently met up with the Italian designer at his studio in the historic centre of Florence. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203296/image/large-d6a208c02274d46c3d159dffd39438bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203296">Did anything in particular inspire you to become a yacht designer?It was when I saw <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/297" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kingdom 5KR86.0m (282'2&quot;)Benetti SpA1980">Nabila</a> as a teenager. The year was 1982 and I was in Livorno with my family and it seemed like the whole city had turned out to see this yacht designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Jon Bannenberg</a>. At 86-metres she was huge for the time and she looked more like an ocean liner than a yacht. Her sheer size was shocking, but I thought she was beautiful and that got me thinking that designing yachts might be the career for me.<ul><li><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/51713" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Insight: Luca Dini and Tommaso Spadolini talk superyacht refit (2020-08-31 12:00:00 +0200)">Insight: Luca Dini and Tommaso Spadolini talk superyacht refit</a>&nbsp;</li></ul>How important was working with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pierluigi Spadolini (Company)">Pierluigi Spadolini</a>&nbsp;in moulding your own design aesthetic?It was a fantastic experience. I started working with professor <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pierluigi Spadolini (Company)">Pierluigi</a> in 1997 and during the week he would come to the office and offer some comments. Every time he found, not a mistake exactly, but something that could be adjusted or done differently. He was full of suggestions, and he was always right. I remember very well that he hated things that were too complicated. You know, he created the Akhir for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> with just three lines and the first Akhir is one of my all-time favourites. That’s something that is always in our minds: everything has to be clean, elegant and chic. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pierluigi Spadolini (Company)">Pierluigi</a> was not just a talented designer; he was a genius.In fact, I believe the 24-metre gentleman's yacht you designed for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a>&nbsp;was inspired by the Kitalpha, another of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pierluigi Spadolini (Company)">Pierluigi Spadolini</a>'s designs?That’s right, I had that kind of vintage yacht in mind. Not too big (just because something is big doesn’t mean it’s better) with beautiful details and materials that recall the golden age of yachting. We’re actually receiving a lot of enquiries about this design from owners who want something different but also very exclusive, because the intention is to build only a limited series.&nbsp;I believe there’s a niche of clients in the market for something compact that they can drive themselves with their family, without a lot of crew around, for short cruises in a certain kind of style.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203297/image/large-7a21a467407e8ce1c18184733611afee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203297"><ul><li><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/52026" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa designs new Gentleman’s Yacht concept with Luca Dini (2020-11-12 16:00:00 +0100)">Codecasa designs new Gentleman’s Yacht concept with Luca Dini</a></li></ul>One of your best known projects is 50.7-metre&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/77" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tribu50.7m (166'4&quot;)Mondomarine SpA2007">Tribù</a>, the explorer yacht originally built for Luciano Benetton. Were you anticipating the whole explorer trend when she was launched in 2007?Possibly, but this honestly was Mr Benetton’s idea. From the start he wanted something that from the outside looked like a working vessel with an open aft deck, something quite rough and masculine, but the inside had to be very elegant. The hull had a commercial paint finish and in the first drawings we had ‘No Smoking’ in big red letters on the side of the boat, which became a red side-boarding ladder in the finished yacht. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/77" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tribu50.7m (166'4&quot;)Mondomarine SpA2007">Tribù</a> was built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondomarine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a> and we’re following more or less the same concept with the new range of explorer yachts by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondomarine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a>, now part of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Group</a>. Like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/77" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tribu50.7m (166'4&quot;)Mondomarine SpA2007">Tribú</a>, which has completed three world tours, the intention is that these are yachts that allow you to go out and stay out on the water for a long time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/90322/image/large-fc299bf90f7728a2f2ec0879d3e34396.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/90322">How has the way your clients use their yachts changed over the years?&nbsp;It’s changed completely. When I started, most owners wanted a villa, a floating palace on the water, and they spent a lot of time inside. So at the time it was important to concentrate on the inside spaces. Then everything changed and we started to live the outdoors again in contact with nature and the ocean. Over the past year or so, we’ve been developing entire open-air platforms rather than just having big windows, folding balconies and sliding glass doors. There are two reasons for this: one is to be able to live more comfortably outside, and the other is to have larger yachts that are still below the 500 GT threshold that depends on enclosed volumes. The combination of these two factors inspired us to develop something very new and the result is the 65-metre Forceful&nbsp;concept. It’s a provocation, if you like, because the exterior styling is totally different from what the market is accustomed to and we’ve created completely al fresco spaces by literally cutting away parts of the hull and superstructure. Another advantage is that you avoid the added cost of engineering complex folding platforms. I think it’s only a question of time before we put something like it on the water.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203298/image/large-cd407c6b31d6d548f583cd21e55c06e1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203298"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203299/image/large-d6531860ba395054d53564a7518baa86.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203299">A new collaboration is with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Tankoa</a>&nbsp;and your first project together is the Sportiva 55, which introduces other novel layout solutions. Tell us more.The&nbsp;Sportiva 55 is one in a series of three designs based on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Tankoa</a>’s existing technical platform, but the yard had some specific requests. Principally it had to be below 500 GT, which is not easy to achieve on a 55-metre yacht. What’s interesting is that the technical challenges led to creative solutions, especially regarding the layout and liveability on board, which now define the whole design. The best example is the master stateroom on the deck forward, which is full beam on one side with a walkway to starboard. This is to keep the interior volume below the required gross tonnage, but we used the side deck to create an owner’s lounging area with a circular hot tub with sliding glass panels so it can be enjoyed inside or outside. We also put all the tenders on the foredeck, both because it makes tender operations easier for the crew and frees up the stern for a terraced beach club with a large pool and the spa-gym on the lower deck with an underwater window. The main deck aft has become the new sun deck as the place where owners and guests spend most of their time during the day, whereas the sun deck is used more in the evenings. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/199393/image/large-8e182ac2ff8fb172ba43455fd0974156.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/199393">The studio has also diversified into architectural design and urban planning. How did that start?A couple of years ago we decided to start a new adventure and set up a land-based design department that today makes up about 50 percent of the studio. We’ve always had requests from yacht clients to design their homes, residences or offices, but I usually refused because we simply weren’t geared up to achieve the same kind of results as in our yacht design work. We’ve now teamed up with a leading engineering firm in Milan and have several properties of 10,000 square metres or more under construction and we’re even developing master plans for entire cities. These are big projects but not dissimilar to what we’re doing in the yachting world in terms of investment, quality and customisation.<ul><li><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53255" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts unveil Linea Sportiva 55 (2021-06-25 16:30:00 +0200)">Tankoa Yachts unveil Linea Sportiva 55</a></li></ul>Do your clients become your friends, or is it a strictly business as usual?‘Friend’ is a big word, but you have to spend around three years with them on a superyacht project, so if you have a good relationship from the start it certainly helps a lot. You know, these people are not coming to us for something important like surgery; a yacht is basically a toy and I tell them: “We can do this together, but it has to be fun.”What's the strangest request you've had from an owner?Some things are too risky to mention! But, you know, sometimes you have funny customers. One I remember had three girlfriends, and they normally slept all four in one bed. So he asked us to design a cabin for him with one bed for him and his three companions. SuperYacht Times sat down with Giuseppe Palumbo, founder and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a>, to find out more about what is currently in the pipeline at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>, their recent refit projects and the future of the refit market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197832/image/large-8a286b8bfefd1eb1f0c88cf78a2f4145.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197832">How did you start out in the superyacht industry and what encouraged you to found&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a>?I was a child when I took my first steps in the shipyard with my grandfather. When I was a teenager, I continued to enjoy my visits there, breathing the air, the smells, looking the workers straight in the eyes and feeling the passion in their work. When I was growing up I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps. I made the passion I experienced from others at the shipyard ‘mine’ and took to the field myself.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197827/image/large-49da68697b37fc1330eaf146a168a506.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197827">Today I am in charge of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a> division, which includes the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6173" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Columbus Yachts (Company)">Columbus</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5574" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Extra Yachts (Company)">EXTRA</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondomarine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a> brands. I have managers with great experience on each of our five production sites in Ancona, Savona, Naples, Malta and Marseille, as well as a representative office in Antibes. Every week I try to visit the shipyards to see the new yachts under construction or refit. I like getting into the technical aspects and I confess that my greatest passion is product development and technological innovation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197831/image/large-089ce3b223333f9c77072c4704101624.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197831">As a family we have always dealt with refit and maintenance of commercial, cruise and cargo vessels, but in 2008 we decided to invest in yachting by making our first 54-metre superyacht under the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6173" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Columbus Yachts (Company)">Columbus</a> brand. Then we grew by acquisition, first with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA Yachts</a> shipyard and then with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondomarine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a>. The latest addition to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a> is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5574" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Extra Yachts (Company)">EXTRA</a>, an innovative brand both in terms of exterior design and volume optimisation. I prefer to let the accomplished results and the facts demonstrate what we are able to achieve both in terms of new constructions and repairs.From the establishment of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a>, how has your vision for the company changed?My long-term view has never changed. I believe it is important to always maintain high construction standards by using quality materials and skilled labour. It is crucial to keep up with new technologies and check their application for the yachting industry. We were pioneers in the field of hybrid propulsion and we continue to invest in the development of new projects and in technical construction equipment. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197734/image/large-6207584bc29a524411e097ddde3f4f5a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197734"> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a>&nbsp;consists of several different brands, including&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>. Could you tell me about the establishment of the refit brand? How does refit and maintenance fit into the vision of the Palumbo group?Refit and maintenance are our bread and butter. We started with this in the early 1950s as a family. It is an integral part of our daily work and the market acknowledges our dominant position in the Mediterranean, where we have five shipyards with state-of-the-art equipment and specialised workforce. We operate on boats up to 120-metres and we always complete our projects to "turnkey" condition and free of surprises.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197828/image/large-e2a7355dbe76ba0d37aff5ca57f0b13e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197828">We carry out a variety of jobs such as the complete repainting of hulls and superstructures, carpentry, interior refit, conversion, installation of hydrojet systems, just to name a few.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>&nbsp;has been busy with its expansion into Central America and the Caribbean, as well as a new office in Antibes. Why have you chosen these locations?Last fall, with the aim of having an increasingly widespread network and guaranteeing our customers would be reached and provided with the highest level of quality service everywhere, we opened a new Service Point in Central America and Caribbean. From January 2021, we have a new office in Antibes, France, which has been established as our new headquarters. The Côte d'Azur remains a strategic point of passage for most of the boats that will then have to be maintained, therefore it was the ideal place to settle our representative area office.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197741/image/large-23e84940f5b157b977c2b79a7c107de8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197741">What does&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>&nbsp;do differently from other repair and refit yards?No one else has as many shipyards offering such a wide range of services. Our facilities range between 22,000 square-metres to 45,000 square-metres, equipped with covered drydocks, travel lifts up to 820 tons, 3,300 ton ship lifts, painting sheds, moorings, yards for on-the-hard jobs, cranes, with many other features to complete projects of any scale. We have on site Project Managers and designers as well as specialised workshops such as joinery, carpentry, upholstery and warehouses at each yard. All of this makes a considerable difference in providing clients with a comprehensive and personal experience.Could you tell me more about some of the recent refit projects that have been completed at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5775" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo SY Refit (Company)">Palumbo SY Refit</a>&nbsp;such as the 116-metre motor yacht&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/909" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantis II115.82m (379'12&quot;)Hellenic Shipyards S.A.1981">Atlantis II</a>&nbsp;and the 15-year Class Survey on the 73-metre superyacht&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/590" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Titania71.0m (232'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2006">Titania</a>?Over the past year and a half we have worked on several important projects. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/909" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantis II115.82m (379'12&quot;)Hellenic Shipyards S.A.1981">Atlantis II</a>has just sailed from Malta to start the season, after receiving routine maintenance as well as restoration and optimisation of her structures. Specifically, some of the process involved the replacement of the 60-metre steel plates on both sides of the superyacht as well as the construction and replacement of a new swimming pool platform. Additionally, our team worked on arranging anchors and cables, lining two anchor pockets, removing the bow thruster and both shaft and propellers, cleaning six ballast tanks, completely renewing the chain locker, replacing the existing exhaust pipe and repairing the air ducts in the FRW area.&nbsp; <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197733/image/large-c4738c92faba5b9290feceb2e069570f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197733">During her visit to our Marseille facilities, the 73-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/590" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Titania71.0m (232'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2006">Titania</a> completed her 15-year Class Survey. The project was completed under a strict deadline and our team’s capabilities were proven, completing the laborious task in under two months, in compliance with the strict rules established by Lloyd's. These are just two examples of superyachts that we’ve recently had in our yard. We also specialise in sailing vessels and we had the opportunity to maintain the sailing yachts <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6794" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Essentia25.95m (85'2&quot;)Grand Soleil2019">Essentia</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4381" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Woodpecker Cube27.71m (90'11&quot;)Nautor's Swan2008">Woodpecker Cube</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10850" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiwi23.99m (78'8&quot;)Southern Wind2002">Kiwi</a> in Ancona, and sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cyrano de Bergerac39.0m (127'11&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1993">Cyrano de Bergeraca</a> in Savona.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197738/image/large-a2057d50ae5cf29e0d9c66cca0d15a21.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197738">Obviously we provide specific service to the fleet of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6173" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Columbus Yachts (Company)">Columbus</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondomarine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5574" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Extra Yachts (Company)">EXTRA</a> brands. Having great knowledge of hybrid propulsion allows us to operate on conversions and maintenance on all kinds of vessels. Recent projects have provided us with insight into the latest ‘green’ propulsion systems. With multiple new-build and refit facilities dotted around the Mediterranean and four distinct yacht brands, no other superyacht builder has invested so heavily in expanding its market presence over the past decade as the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Shipyard (Company)">Palumbo Group</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/84163/image/large-1a55bd58b12c178492aff0efa1955c37.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/84163">Headquartered in Naples and with over half a century of shipbuilding experience, the family-owned commercial shipyard diversified into yachting in 2008 when it set up the Columbus brand and went on to launch its first superyacht, 54-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3183" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Armada53.7m (176'2&quot;)Palumbo Shipyard2011">Armada</a>&nbsp;(ex: Prima), three years later. Before we acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA Yachts</a>, for instance, it was already internationally recognised as a symbol of made-in-Italy design, quality and innovation, and we’ve looked to build on that reputation. The GT series designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1197" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Team for Design (Company)">Enrico Gobbi</a> recalls the sporty <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> yachts of the past, but raises the bar in terms of design and engineering and sets the tone for the future. &nbsp;The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> Extra series represents a new approach to yachting for clients disillusioned with a traditional flybridge or open models. Inspiration for the concept came from what I personally wanted in a smaller yacht: namely outstanding interior volume and deck space, excellent fuel economy and high build quality, all at a very competitive price. In fact, the first Extra 76 was built for my own use – I only sold it when a client gave me a blank cheque and asked me to name my price. The same owner then went on to order an Extra 93.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/80837/image/large-4d96c99edfabf48b4b2c54df540d0923.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80837">Columbus is different and is very much part of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Shipyard (Company)">Palumbo</a> story as the brand that launched us onto the superyacht scene. Owners can ask us to build a design by an outside designer or naval architect, or we can create one ourselves using our in-house technical and design staff. We can fulfil pretty much any brief and each project is fully tailored to the client’s requests.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondo Marine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a> is different again and we plan to build all-aluminium yachts from 40 to 60 metres under the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondo Marine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a> name. Perhaps the most famous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/72" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mondo Marine SpA (Company)">Mondomarine</a> of all was the 50-metre explorer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/77" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tribu50.7m (166'4&quot;)Mondo Marine SpA2007">Tribù</a> that was built for Luciano Benetton, which is why we’ve launched our own explorer series, starting with 57-metre Discovery designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/58" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luca Dini Design (Company)">Luca Dini</a>. The all-aluminium Extra models will also be built in Savona. It’s worth mentioning that a private airfield recently opened in nearby Albenga, which makes Savona even more convenient for new-build or refit clients travelling by private jet.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/80852/image/large-2064bf22980e8c092437257bee6e32d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80852">If a client came to you and asked for a full-custom&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a>&nbsp;yacht, would that be possible?The interior design, of course, is already up to the owner and the engineering platform provides for a degree of customisation, but the idea is to maintain the brand DNA in a semi-custom series. I can say that we are planning to build bigger at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1197" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Team for Design (Company)">Enrico Gobbi</a> is working on an 80-metre design based on the same technical platform as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4848" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dragon79.9m (262'2&quot;)Palumbo Shipyard2019">Dragon</a>, but if a customer wants a full-custom experience the logical choice would be Columbus Yachts. &nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83399/image/large-39a98a41b2488243f5931c9c78859f88.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83399">To what extent are you prepared to build on spec?We currently have an Extra 86 and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> GT 67m in build on speculation, and we began the construction of 80-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4848" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dragon79.9m (262'2&quot;)Palumbo Shipyard2019">Dragon</a> on spec. Naturally, the strategy is to reduce delivery times for a potential client and that is a decision I take on a case-by-case basis. Investing in the product and the shipyard is the best form of marketing, but today I’m more inclined to start a spec build in the 70 to 80-metre size range where we have the required experience and there’s less competition. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/80586/image/large-1d43f9c734120326499312f0b8d996ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80586">Is&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Shipyard (Company)">Palumbo</a>&nbsp;planning further expansion or acquisitions?No, for the moment I want to focus on consolidating what we have and on the customer experience. Our owners are generally experienced, very attentive to costs and expect ongoing service beyond the standard warranty period. As specialists in both the new-build and refit sectors, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Shipyard (Company)">Palumbo</a> is in a unique position to provide that after-sales service throughout the lifecycle of the yacht. The U.S. market is growing and we currently have four American owners, so within the next year or two I want to open an office in Florida to provide sales and technical assistance. Before <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/77">Tribu</a> arrived in Australia, she travelled around New Zealand, where the Captain, guests and crew were blown away by the country’s natural beauty, warm hearted people and gourmet food. "We've appreciated the wilderness of New Zealand and the kindness of the people living there. Both the north and south islands offer beautiful and touching landscapes and remote anchorages. Superyacht Tribu crosses the Pacific and arrives in Tahiti

After a fascinating 22 days Pacific crossing, starting from San Diego at the end of September, Captain Luca Mosca and his Crew finally arrived with Tribu in Koror, Republic of Palau. Captain Antonio Gerini has once again joined the yacht, and will take Tribu on a cruise throughout Micronesia and Melanesia. After a stop in Mexico, captain Antonio and his crew are now in Los Angeles, but they will soon set sail to Alaska and Canada where they will spend the summer season.
