A key aspect of the sailing yacht is her eco-friendly approach, notably her carbon emission offsetting, aligning her with sustainable practices. Additionally, could you provide some insights into your background and journey?I have sailed my entire life, starting around the age of two in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight, then sailing alongside my brother on various sailboats, including Hobie Cats, 420s and Lasers.I was initially destined for a career in the British Army having been awarded a top scholarship in my intake to Sandhurst. Unfortunately, my rugby career was also running parallel to this and I had to have eight knee operations which resulted in a medical discharge from military service. The obvious next move was to go into banking, something my family has been involved with since the 1650s. That said it was 2010 and the recession was still hitting the banking sector hard, and it look thoroughly unappealing! &nbsp;Through a rather tenuous link a potential job opening was presented to me at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>. With my childhood love of sailing, I thought that the yachting industry could be an interesting path so I applied and underwent a rigorous interview process, competing with 63 or so other applicants for a single position. I ended up being selected as Chris Cecil-Wright’s junior, starting out in the listings department. Shortly after accepting the role, I relocated to Monaco and that marked the beginning of my career at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>.&nbsp;Eventually, Chris and I decided to leave and establish <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright (Company)">Cecil Wright &amp; Partners</a>, officially opening the business on 4th June 2013. The idea of working within a smaller, tightly knit team had always appealed to me. Having Chris, one of the prolific yacht brokers in the world, as my mentor was instrumental in my development, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had that opportunity.Interestingly, if you had asked me during my university days what I envisioned for my post-army career, becoming a yacht broker would never have crossed my mind. The yachting industry seemed like a distant and exclusive world that I never considered.Yacht brokers typically come from backgrounds which are already in some way affiliated with yachting; sons of other brokers, captains who go land based and, on occasion, transitions from associated fields such as yachting journalism. Bringing a fresh perspective and new insight to the industry has been quite intriguing. It is worth highlighting that banking and finance, my familial background, is known for its forward-thinking approach and use of innovative technologies, which stood in stark contrast to the antiquated practices I found in the yachting sector.Reflecting on the impact we have made on the industry, particularly in terms of innovations like 3D scanning, we introduced this technology back in 2015, I would like to think that we have brought the industry a pace or two forward. Surprisingly, many have not adopted it, which I find fairly astonishing. We have successfully sold several yachts without the need for potential buyers to physically visit them. For instance, I facilitated the sales of the 62-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/186" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Prediction62.0m (203'5&quot;)Feadship2005">Prediction</a> (previously called New Hampshire) during Covid, the 56.50-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/280" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ambition56.5m (185'4&quot;)Feadship2001">Ambition</a> (previously called Hampshire I) and the 22.34-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> motor yacht Jabberwocky, the latter to a gentleman in California who had never set foot in Europe. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/88486/image/large-59f1f461708afcb79da38f374df77461.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/88486">Could you delve deeper into the client approach and business ethos at the firm?At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright (Company)">Cecil Wright &amp; Partners</a>, we maintain the principle of 'fewer clients serviced better' as a core aspect of our brokerage philosophy. This approach has played a crucial role in shaping our interactions with clients and building enduring relationships in the industry. When Chris and I founded our company, we deeply analysed the market to determine which segments of the industry offered the most potential for success. We focused on identifying what sells quickly, retains value, and the type of clientele associated with very large pedigree vessels. Our findings pointed out that the large pedigree vessel segment is not only secure and more liquid but the people who owned them were less susceptible to market fluctuations.&nbsp;Our goal is not to sell a multitude of yachts to a vast number of clients but to ensure that we offer the right yacht to the right client from the outset. This requires us to prioritise our clients' interests over short-term gains. We do not engage in practices that might encourage clients to overpay or provide them with inaccurate information about a yacht's value. In the world of yacht brokerage, it is an interesting paradox, doing better for our clients often means making less on a deal.We firmly believe that the long-term benefits of fostering trust and credibility with our clients far outweigh any short-term financial gains. Our business thrives on referrals and networks, and we understand that by consistently acting in the best interests of our clients, they are more likely to introduce us to their peers.One distinctive aspect of our approach is our collaborative nature. Unlike many other companies where a single broker is exclusively responsible for a client and their yacht, we encourage internal collaboration within the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright (Company)">CWP</a> team. We leverage the expertise of various team members to provide the best possible service. For example, in the sale of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4095" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Whisper95.2m (312'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2014">Whisper</a>, there were three of us working on it: myself, Chris, and Henry Goulding. And we're not ashamed or abashed by that. And I think the quite interesting thing is whilst we are a boutique company, as a client you get more broker attention than you do at larger outfits. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/275534/image/large-79daee2d3ed2fd80e22941eff4eb2868.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/275534">Why does&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright (Company)">Cecil Wright &amp; Partners</a>&nbsp;tend to choose yachts with a northern European pedigree as their brokerage's focus? What specific qualities or attributes of these yachts appeal to you and your clients? Choosing yachts with a Northern European pedigree as our brokerage's focus has been a strategic decision driven by several key factors. What you tend to find is that, by and large, the consistency of quality produced by these Northern European yards is more reliable. However, it's essential to note that, like any business, some yards may cut corners to maximise profits especially if not overseen by an independent build manager.&nbsp;They tend to retain their value better over time because they are generally built to a higher standard. When it comes to warranty work, these yachts typically require very minimal repairs, and most issues can be addressed in the field.For instance, if a yacht, such as a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, undergoes maintenance at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> in Barcelona, you'll notice that the need for extensive repairs is rare. Comparatively, some other brands have been known to experience delays and extensive post-delivery work. This raises concerns about getting what you are paying for.Our sales data reflects this, with an average of just four months on the market for yachts in our portfolio, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadships</a> often selling within three months of listing. These numbers speak to the quality and market appeal of these vessels. We recently sold the 95.2-metre&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4095" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Whisper95.2m (312'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2014">Whisper</a>, in just three months, even with a two-month wait for viewings due to its high demand for charter.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/275531/image/large-265b3c9589f66c3eaa9a18ea090d0bb3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/275531">As someone with extensive international experience, what are some key trends or changes you have observed in the yachting industry in the past six months, and how do you see it evolving in the future? When it comes to trends in the yachting industry, it's important to understand that changes often unfold gradually. One noteworthy trend we're currently witnessing is the rising interest in explorer yachts. This trend encompasses both chartering and ownership, with many clients seeking out more adventurous destinations.Furthermore, regulatory factors are exerting a significant influence. For instance, in the South of France and Corsica, issues like seagrass and the associated anchoring restrictions are driving people to explore different locations. Spain, on the other hand, presents an interesting scenario due to its stringent VAT policies. Chartering in Spain now entails a 45% VAT for non-EU flagged vessels. However, there are creative ways to navigate these challenges. With the growing awareness of environmental sustainability, how does <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright (Company)">Cecil Wright and Partners</a> navigate this shift, and what unique advantages do sailing yachts offer in terms of eco-friendliness?In the context of environmental sustainability, the perception that sailing yachts are more environmentally friendly than motor yachts while underway is true, but when a sailing yacht is at anchor and using a generator, the environmental advantage diminishes. Additionally, it is a complex issue because, in terms of construction, the environmental impact of sailing yachts and motor yachts of the same tonnage is not significantly different either.&nbsp;We acknowledge the importance of green credentials. Carbon offsetting is a concept we support and promote. Personally, I believe it should be a standard practice in the industry, especially concerning charters.Carbon offsetting can be introduced as an opt-out option rather than opt-in. When presented with an opt-in option, most people tend not to choose it, whereas with an opt-out option, fewer opt-out. For instance, if you include a special condition in a charter contract, stating that carbon offsetting is applied, with the option to opt-out, you would be surprised how many clients choose to offset. The cost of offsetting a charter is relatively small, considering the overall value of the charter.Finally, personally, if you could invest in a yacht, what would you choose and why?I am a sailor at heart, so I would go for a sailing yacht. The optimal yacht I have been on in terms of design and performance is the 57.50-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/796" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Twizzle57.5m (188'8&quot;)Royal Huisman2010">Twizzle</a>. With 2022 nearly a wrap, <a href="https://superyachttimes.ac-page.com/homepage" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a> has taken a look back at the sales figures for the year – and rather than comparing them to pre-pandemic levels, we’ve done a year-on-year comparison to 2021 – and the figures are surprising. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241340/image/large-9d572f9bc938600c848018ec5b0dd2ce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241340">Straight off the bat, it needs to be noted that there were nearly 200 fewer transactions closed this year than there were during the pandemic-induced boom in 2021. Last year brokers all around the world sold 456 used motor yachts and 37 used sailing yachts of 30 metres or more – it wasn’t just a record-breaking year, it saw close to 200 yachts added onto the annual average. Taking a preliminary look at 2022, sales have rebalanced to the pre-pandemic average of 2020, 2019 and 2018.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251856/image/large-410e40346f783f7035d9d5ff70506a73.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251856">Thus far in 2022, more than 300 used yachts of 30 metres and longer have been sold; interestingly, the average last known asking price of the yachts sold this year surpassed 2021 by more than €2 million. So even though fewer yachts have been sold this year, on average the price of these used yachts is more expensive than in 2021, which might point to a further tightening of the brokerage market. Last year the average last asking price was just over €11 million for yachts, which has jumped to €13.1m this year. Notably, there was a significant 10 percent decrease in the amount of days yachts spent on the market this year.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252041/image/large-4f26eb68021633d583101adf5fa1c345.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252041">In keeping with the used sales market trend, there was a substantial decrease in new orders this year compared to 2021. Last year a total of 312 new contracts over 30-metres were signed, 57 percent of which were between the 30 to 40 metre category and 5 percent in the 80 metre and above segment. This year, however, 202 new orders were signed; 51 percent were in the 30 to 40 metre category and 6 percent in the 80 metre and above.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/205414/image/large-41db81b83d07fd6570ab426267a5c782.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/205414">We also witnessed an unexpected sale this year, which was the result of the war in Ukraine and the subsequent blacklist placed on a collection of Russian oligarchs with direct links to the Kremlin. This sale was the 72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a>-built superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> which sold at auction in Gibraltar for $37,500,000 in September. A number of other superyachts have been arrested around the world, which could still potentially be put under the hammer.&nbsp;What differentiated <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> from the other arrested Russian-owned superyachts is that her owner unlawfully took out a loan with JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co as the sole shareholder of Pyrene Investments. As the yacht's owner was on the sanction list his assets were frozen and it was illegal for the bank to accept any repayments from him. The sale of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Odyssey123.2m (404'2&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2015">Golden Odyssey</a> was forced by legislative action, following a number of missed loan repayments that resulted in her seizure. According to local reports, Justice Spiteri Bailey approved the private sale of the vessel for €150 million, but her last known asking price is unknown. The 58m Royal Huisman sailing yacht Twizzle has entered the market.

Inside, outside or underwater, onboard lighting sets the mood, enhances our perception of space and can even become a work of art itself. In short, it is an integral part of yacht design that contributes to the overall aesthetics by marrying functional needs with materials and finishes to bring a custom project to life.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45934/image/large-d032c14ecb546d03828f4b624ba4f9e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45934">“As yacht designers, we strive to create an emotional and architectural experience, which can only be improved with good lighting design,” says Ben Harrison of Harrison Eidsgaard in London. “You could say that light – its colour, intensity and distribution – is the basis of everything we do.”This hasn’t always been the case. It wasn’t long ago that lighting on yachts was strictly functional. Limited by profit margins and technical platforms, boat builders relied on generic solutions and were generally slow to embrace innovation. To some extent this was understandable: the vibration, saline environment and limited space for wiring aboard yachts meant conventional solutions were favoured over new but possibly unreliable technologies.“Every stakeholder appreciates the added value of good lighting design, but in the past it was usually delegated to the shipyards and the installation was very much driven by the budget,”&nbsp;says Claudio Zimarino, advisor for the London-based firm John Cullen Lighting that has developed lighting solutions for superyachts such as Feadship’s 70-metre Joy, Derecktor’s 85.6-metre Aquila and Royal Huisman’s 57.49-metre Twizzle. “It’s only fairly recently that we’ve seen more attention being paid to lighting by enlightened players.”The big change came with advances in Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology and the push to phase out energy-gobbling halogen bulbs. In the early years, LEDs were expensive, difficult to dim and gave out a harsh blue light, but there was no denying that their small size, low heat emission and long life made them ideal for yachts. Interior and exterior lighting was quickly transformed by using LEDs for accent, ambient and task lighting. The strip lighting beneath furniture units that lends them a ‘floating’ look – an effect that now appears on almost every yacht regardless of size – would be virtually impossible to achieve with other light sources.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45937/image/large-c36a731000e1f5b7bba888b01993d2bc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45937">Chips with everything Recent improvements in the high-tech manufacturing of LED chips have led to further gains in the quality and consistency of light they emit. Today’s high-power LEDs can be smaller than a grain of rice and render colours that are very close to natural light. This is an important consideration for any illumination project, but especially in the retail sector. In fact, Luce5 Yachting in Viareggio was set up so that yacht builders could benefit from the company’s experience working with high-end retail clients such as Prada, Bulgari, Fendi, Boucheron, Zanotti and Zegna. In the two years since the new division was founded, it has collaborated with Benetti on multiple new-builds, including two 100+ metre superyachts due to launch in 2019, and signed off two refit projects with the ‘relamping’ of Benetti’s 52-metre Falcon (ex-Sai Ram) and Oceanco’s 85.5-metre Sunrays.&nbsp;“We started working with Prada because their famous handbags were showing up as different shades of red under different LEDs, sometimes in the same store,” says Riccardo Di Bene, Managing Director of Luce5 Yachting. “The same thing can happen on a yacht: if you don’t use the best quality LEDs, your carefully selected walnut veneer can end up looking like cherry wood. The ultimate goal is to develop lighting solutions that are perfectly harmonised with the interior and exterior furnishings, decor and ambience.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45932/image/large-0e890018420f24b9d094c899f05cc118.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45932">Techorate&nbsp;your space Miniaturisation and gains in performance of LEDs have led to new applications that were unrealisable a decade or so ago. Super-bright, electroluminescent LED sheets are now available that can be flexed into fluid, organic shapes. When combined with a reflector and laser-machined diffuser, they offer perfectly uniform brightness across the panel for backlighting marble and onyx, or creating ‘skylight’ panels calibrated to resemble diffuse daylight. Even wood veneers can be backlit and LEDs are being used to add sparkle to micro-perforated leather, providing ambient illumination while accentuating the natural properties of materials. These advances have given birth to a new expression – techorating – to describe the fusion of technology and decorating.Of course, LEDs have also impacted the exterior lighting of yachts. Instead of lighting up the whole superstructure like a fairground attraction, here the trend is towards more selective, indirect illumination. By way of example, Ben Harrison points to M/Y Irisha, the 51-metre Heesen delivered to her owner earlier this year:&nbsp;“Irisha has a very distinctive glass arch over the wheelhouse and we chose to accentuate this signature feature at night with LED strip lighting,” he explains. “We intentionally did not do the same on the deck below, because we would have ended up with that scatter-gun speckling of lights that we’re trying to move away from.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45936/image/large-24f5b4b478820e3833781f290cfa3c63.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45936">Lighting in a digital world Technology has revolutionised the light sources themselves, but also redefined the design process and introduced new tools for personalising the lighting design. Pre-set lighting scenarios, controlled by a handheld tablet or smartphone according to the occasion or time of day, are now fully integrated into the domotic networks aboard yachts. This requires a dozen or more different loops for adjusting the lights in each room, which further involves a lot of complex circuitry that has to be defined ahead of time (the final programming of each loop is often the last job of the designer before delivery of the yacht). This painstaking process is being superseded with LEDs that can be individually controlled using a Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI), a network-based system whereby each light is assigned a specific code. This represents a huge step forward for designers and shipyards alike, who no longer have to decide which lights have to be wired into which loop during the design phase.&nbsp;What’s next? The Internet of Things (the concept of connecting any device to the internet, including cell phones, wearable devices and products such as coffeemakers. An extensive network of connected ‘things’) is becoming a reality and part of this process is Li-Fi, a form of wireless communication using light that is 100 times faster than average Wi-Fi speeds. Because LEDs are semiconductors that can modulate current and output rapidly, they are ideal for implementing Li-Fi. The drawback is that Li-Fi is short range, although in terms of security this is arguably an advantage on yachts: to hack into the Li-Fi network, you would have to stand very near a light source to do so. Innovations like this promise undeniable benefits, but the rapid advance of digital technology brings with it unforeseeable challenges:“A custom superyacht takes around three years to build, so what we specify today may be old by the time the yacht is delivered,” says Claudio Zimarino. “This means we have to constantly stay on top of the latest developments in lighting technology, fixtures, drivers and control systems. A number of high profile sailing yachts have changed hands during the first six months of 2016. Here we take a look at just some of the largest and most recent of those sales.

Q (ex. Mondango)

The 52 metre sailng yacht Mondango (now named Q) was announced sold in March this year. Stockbridge Yacht Brokers and joint central agents Burgess having represented the owner, and Camper &amp; Nicholsons acting on behalf of the buyer. Originally built for an international businessman, Mondango was designed by Dubois Naval Architects as a high performance aluminium ketch with luxury world cruising in mind. Mondango features a modern and fresh interior, designed by Reymond Langton, which offers luxury accommodation for 10 guests. 

Twizzle

Y.CO secured the sale of the 57.5 metre sailng yacht Twizzle at the start of the year. Built by Royal Huisman in 2010, the iconic Twizzle features naval architecture by Dubois Naval Architects, and interior design by Redman Whiteley Dixon in collaboration with Todhunter Earle. Will Christie of Y.CO acted as Joint Central Agent in the sale with Burgess and Jim Wallace of Camper and Nicholsons International representing the buyer. At the time of sale she was listed at an asking price of €39,750,000.

Shamrock V

Edmiston also announced in March the sale of the 36.58 metre sailing yacht Shamrock V. Originally built in 1930 by Camper &amp; Nicholsons Shipyard for Sir. Thomas Lipton - the founder of Lipton tea - she is the only wooden J-Class yacht ever built. Shamrock V was sold with Edmiston representing both the buyer and the seller in the deal. At the time of sale she was listed at an asking price of €6,000,000.

In February Perini Navi USA announced the sale of the 38 metre sloop P2. Built by Perini Navi in 2008, P2 has an alloy hull and carbon superstructure and features naval architecture and exterior design by the renowned Philippe Briand. P2 was listed for sale at Perini Navi USA, with Perini Navi’s Bruce Brakenhoff representing both the buyer and the seller in the deal. At the time of sale, she was listed at an asking price of $9,900,000.

Yanneke Too

Sailing yacht Yanneke Too, a sleek 36 metre sailing yacht delivered by Camper &amp; Nicholsons in 1996, was sold in April this year after having been jointly listed for sale through Burgess and Yachtzoo with Ardell having introduced the buyer. Yanneke Too is designed by British designer Bill Dixon, and she was conceived for worldwide cruising. At the time of the sale her asking price was set at €1,800,000.

Jazz Jr.

The 32.8 metre sailing yacht Jazz Jr. was announced sold by Hoek Brokerage this week. built by Turquoise Yachts in 2009, the Hoek Designed yacht was on offer at an asking price of €3.800.000 at the time of the sale.

Timoneer

The 44m Dubois-designed Ketch Timoneer, built by Vitters in 2001, found a new owner earlier this month. The sale was announced by President of Perini Navi USA, Bruce Brakenhoff, having represented the seller along with Burgess as co-central agent with Pam Barlow of Luke Brown Yachts acting on behalf of the buyer. Timoneer’s asking price at the time of the sale was $8,250,000.

One of the largest sailing catamarans in North America was recently sold by Denison Yacht Sales. Built by Blue Coast Yachts in France, the 95-foot Cartouche was offered at an asking price of €4,450,000. The seller was represented by Catherine Relandeau (Cath Yachts) and Jean-Marie Cabri (Denison Yacht Sales) represented the buyer.

British design studio Redman Whiteley Dixon talks superyachts, the future of design and how a team of talented designers all ended up on the same track.

The down-to-earth group of designers at Redman Whiteley Dixon has firmly established themselves as a household name in the superyacht design world, with industry-changing projects such as Vava II, Twizzle and Como all benefitting from their design handy work. SYT caught up with Justin Redman and Toby Ecuyer from the acclaimed studio based in Hampshire in the UK to find out what contributed to their past successes, the value of partnership within a modern design company, and what exactly driving around in old-school cars has to do with it all?

How did RWD start in 1993?

Justin: We founded RWD with two partners; Mark Whiteley and myself, and together we formed Redman Whiteley Design. We originally met when we were studying Industrial Design together at The Central School of Art &amp; Design in London. Some years later, Mark had been working with Andrew Winch and I had likewise had been working with the great John Munford. Having very much kept in touch, there came a time to try going it alone, put our names on the door and so together we decided to set up shop! That was 23 years ago in Chelsea, London, just down the road from Mr. Bannenberg. Tony Dixon joined us in 2001 and our company name subsequently changed to Redman Whiteley Dixon.

You were designing mostly sailing yacht (and a few motor yacht) interiors when you started, was it difficult to land your first exterior project because of that initial specialism?

Justin: I guess so. We had added elements of exterior design to one or two sailing yachts we had been working on at the time, but really the major game changer for us, from an exterior design perspective was the exterior and interior commission for the 73 metre Amels built Ilona. She was all about innovation and our landscape very much changed following her launch. Every company seems to have 'significant’ yachts in its history and for us clearly, one was Ilona. From a size perspective, she was a notable calling card into the larger yacht arena, but she also introduced the exterior element of our business and gave us some of our trademarks and styling cues that we've evolved and developed since. We’ve had the most lovely relationship with that family, with perhaps five commissions over the years and we are now very proud to have designed the interior of a yacht for the next generation of the family, which was recently launched in New Zealand. As such, another very important commission for us and I think we have again achieved something really very personal and bespoke once more.

Vava II was also a very significant exterior design project, could you tell us more about her?

Justin: Yes, she was. This was an incredible opportunity for us, winning the commission over other wonderful designers who had been considered as well. We felt we won it because we developed not only a very unique looking profile for her owner, but one which incorporated key influences which he had brought to the table from sailboat racing. She is the largest private yacht ever to be built in England, a fact which made us very proud as a company, but also personally as she was constructed in a place where generations of my own naval family came from over the years. She was a phenomenally special and important commission for us and the final result was even better than we could have hoped for. Interestingly, the fact that hardly anybody has really seen her, because she spends her life all around the globe, is great testament to her owners vision, sense of adventure and intent to explore the oceans of the world, exactly what should happen to more of these yachts.

We don’t see many concepts done by RWD, is there a specific reason for that?

Justin: We are incredibly fortunate to be enormously busy actually building boats, to the point where concepts haven’t been a great priority for us. The Monaco Yacht Show is a wonderful showcase for such concepts, but I also think that gifted conceptual work can also get lost; you can walk around the show in Monaco, passing endless new and no doubt wonderful concepts, but perhaps they get a little lost, fighting for attention. I think if we were to imagine and offer a visionary RWD concept, a significant part of the challenge would be evolving an environment or occasion where that concept was noticed, allowed to breathe and therefore catch the imagination in a very different and unique way - maybe we should… watch this space!

Would you say the average size of the yachts you are working on is growing?

Justin: I do think it is fair to say there was a time, that with some exceptions, a lot of what we were designing perhaps averaged say 60 metres in length and now that average is probably more like 80 - 90 metres. It has definitely increased, but we have been very fortunate as it’s the sector of the market that we feel very comfortable in. Equally, if we were asked to design a 30 metre sailboat or a 10 metre tender for example, then we would enjoy those challenges just as much, with the ultimate quest being utter perfection for the owner, whatever the size. This is and will always be the absolute mainstay of our business and reason for doing what we do. Not that we must do bigger and bigger, that’s never ever been the ambition. That said, not many people are aware of our interior role within Al Said, until very recently, the largest yacht by volume in the world.

Are these projects both motor and sailing yachts? Or perhaps more motor yachts these days?

Justin: They are mainly motor yachts currently which is very good, but may I say I think it’s a great sadness that the large sailing yacht industry, which I always felt would remain a smaller but constant force, because it was more enthusiast driven, seems to be a sector of the market that has slowed right down. It’s a great shame for those of us with a passion for sailing and an appreciation of the technical grace of these vast and powerful machines, that this very specialised and innovative sector of our world is struggling somewhat. That said, the recently launched Elfje, with our interior, is the very opposite of that, a perfectly proportioned, stunningly conceived and technically brilliant project that really should inspire many.

Toby: Elfje was an immensely rewarding project. She is a fabulous yacht, and to work on the design of the boat with her owner, and with Royal Huisman, was just enormous fun. The fact that she was 51 metres, wouldn’t have been any better if she was 81 metres. Size isn’t actually important. Seemingly the slowing down of new builds in the sailboat industry is continuing and that seems very sad, but I can’t think it will be forever.

Has Twizzle been the only sailing yacht exterior which you have designed so far?

Justin: No, we designed a smaller ketch many years ago, but at 57.5 metres, Twizzle is by far the largest. It was a major project and something that came out of a relationship with an existing motor yacht owner, where we had collaborated on the interior. At the outset, our task was to focus entirely on how they wanted to live on board a sail boat, not what it looked like, not how many masts or indeed the length; it was really a study of how they liked to spend each day, interacting with each other as guests and with their crew and from that came an arrangement, but no exterior. So then and only then, did we start to 'clothe' the package in a form that, from an exterior viewpoint, was always to be very clean and elegant with very subtle surfacing. Our expression perhaps of how a pilot house configuration should look like. However, being rubbish at making things float or perform, we then asked our great friend Ed Dubois, if we might reverse roles from so many prior sailing yacht projects, and whether he could he help us turn this special vision into a sailing machine, which he charmingly and expertly did. It was a very respectful and wonderful collaboration, and we were humbled that the great Mr Dubois allowed us to shape the forms of this yacht. This would normally be his rightful task, but because of our great history with him, it was a “fabulous, why not?!” and a further example of the ethos of our company; it’s always a collaboration of minds.

You have also collaborated with Benetti to design the interior of the Benetti Veloce series, Cheers 46 for example?

Toby: Correct. We have designed a handful of 60-65 metre projects with this great and historic shipyard in the past and as a result have got a really good relationship with Benetti. They asked us if we could come up with three different schemes for an interior for a semi production boat so the client can then choose between them. The brief was essentially to design a modern, traditional and an in-between interior. Our approach was to design interiors where material choice was the key to creating a modern or traditional scheme, whilst the architecture of the design is contemporary in keeping with the exterior design.

Is dealing with clients directly easier when you have a few partners in the studio, where one partner might get along better with a certain client then another?

Justin: I think it can help on that level, yes. It also helps with a large order book, in that as an owner you’re not passed down to a project manager after the first meeting, and that you actually spend time with the principals of the company. That was one of the founding principles that Mark and I felt to be crucial when we first started. We’d seen examples of it before, where the principal comes along on the first morning and then isn’t seen until the launch. This doesn’t seem to be very appropriate to us, we felt it would be far more productive to deal with someone who’s a part of the company and all of the RWD Directors are always available for this. One of the most important elements for us at RWD is the personal relationships that we forge with our clients. It is also critical to us to ensure that designing and creating with that RWD partnership is a very, very enjoyable journey. So when visiting our unique studio, this might mean helicoptering in to stay in one of England's very best Country house spa hotels, the nearby Lime Wood, and perhaps enjoying riding in the New Forest, fly-fishing on one of the best chalk streams in the South, all things frankly which have nothing to do with yacht design, but add to the memories of the creation of that yacht. The more pleasurable we can make the whole design experience, the more valuable the journey is.

Tell us about the Auto Tour. How did that start?

Justin: It started by the three of us sitting in the pub, trying to decide the best way to get to the Monaco Yacht Show that first year, now eight years ago . We had just spent another year on planes, so why take yet another flight, why not just drive down!?! It would give us time to chat with each other, think about the show before we got there, a sort of calm before the storm if you like... We did drive down, in only four cars that year and yes, the first trip was very much like that. Since then, people have got to hear about it and it has built and built over the years. We started planning it better and staying in more beautiful hotels along the way and it kept growing to the point where we are now up to maybe 30 cars with perhaps 50 people on the road, driving either their classic or super cars, entirely as our guests, a sort of 'thank you' to friends and colleagues from the preceding year if you like.

Toby: It’s also about people that we’ve just enjoyed working with. It’s more like a 4 day super yachting dinner party on the road. The clients are getting something completely different that has nothing to do with boats, and what’s really interesting, is that no one talks about boats. There is very little conversation of yachts, instead people talk about their cars, they talk about their family, and they talk about pretty much everything but boats. Normally on the last day, we have a picnic lunch with amazing food and wine and it’s there where people say, I don’t want to go to the show, I want to carry on. This is something we would never have expected; you can’t predict these things.

The brand of a design company is always an interesting topic to discuss. Do you see a future for design without the founder-designers being present?

Justin: Yes, I very much do. The very last thing we want is for our company to wither on the vine and die just because we are either less involved or indeed not involved at all. I would regard this as failure. There has to be succession and evolution. Toby shares this vision as do many others in our 30 strong company and the future will come from within. We’ve been able to very successfully move on after Mark’s leaving, we still see him regularly, we are even working together and of course he’s now created his own company again. Why not? We’ve always looked at everything we do as a collaboration, it's just that the make-up of the team may and will change in the future, but the philosophy should not and that has greater potential. Ever since Mark and I set up the company, it’s been that way, and when Tony joined, the collaboration grew and so it did again when Toby joined. There is enough talent within to honour our history if you like, but definitely more than enough to continue to grow and develop the brand into many more sectors and we are thrilled to see that metamorphosis happening.

Toby: There are some people where the brand is that person. We’ve worked very hard to make that brand collaborative and independent of one person. The way we do things, the way we present ourselves and the effort we go to is right across the company, it’s not just the people at the front making the effort, it’s everybody. RWD has a great heritage of wonderful work and great people who have achieved that - the ambition is very much to carry this forward in to the future.

Do you also feel it is a saleable company, or rather a company that promotes young designers whom have joined to become partners of the company?

Justin: The interesting thing is that we’re just getting going now! The last thing we would want to do at the moment is sell! We have all the potential in the world; we have a wonderful site, wonderful designers, and wonderful partners. The potential is huge. I genuinely get excited to come in every day because it feels like we’re starting afresh. Do I think it's a saleable company? That’s not the question; the question is how we continue it and develop it and if we ever did sell, hopefully it would be to the people here in some way, shape or form. The people are the company, the people who started here as young designers and became a partner, just like Toby did, these are the people who have the drive for the future of 'their' company.

The 57.5m superyacht Twizzle sold

The annual charter show attracts brokerage companies from around the world, providing a platform to showcase some of their flagship charter vessels to charter brokers in the industry. For many the event signals the start of the Caribbean charter season which runs until May the following year for many yachts. This year the show has been extended over six days, taking place in the beautiful Falmouth Harbour. As the official superyacht Data &amp; Intelligence media partner, SuperYacht iQ, the new intelligence division of SuperYacht Company, has analysed the 121 exhibting superyachts that will be on display at the Monaco Yacht Show later this week.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156250/image/large-5f94c953ba2d890c132ff17347e20147.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156250">Of the 121 yachts present, 104 are motor yachts, with 17 sailing yachts. The total length of all yachts on display is 5.7 kilometres with an average length of 47 metres. The yachts have been built in no less than 16 different countries by 68 different shipyards.Lürssen’s 85.10m superyacht Solandge will again be the largest yacht on display at this year’s show, followed closely by the 81.80m Romea, delivered by Abeking &amp; Rasmussen earlier this year. The newly launched 43.13m Sea Eagle by Royal Huisman will be on display with the largest sailboat at the show, the 57.49m Twizzle, also built by the Dutch shipyard.The total value of all the yachts on display this year is € 3 billion, with an average value of € 25 million per yacht. If we compare the motor yachts to the sailing yachts; the average length of a motor yacht attending the show is 48 metres, while sailing yachts have an average length of 39 metres. The 57.49 metre superyacht Twizzle built by Royal Huisman in 2010 has recently undergone an extensive refit, including a full repaint of the hull and spars. During this process the rigs and EC6 standing rigging have also been fully serviced by RSB Rigging Solutions, just in time for a busy summer season.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152816/image/large-26c0834638d915003806868f8f6ff0b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152816">Steve Branagh, the founder of RSB Rigging Solutions, says, “The weather gods have not been kind to us recently, with high winds meaning the stepping procedure on the 57 metre ketch Twizzle had to be delayed for a few days. However with a 12 hour window popping up in the forecast, the cranes were booked and the prep work was completed for the big day. Thursday arrived grey and overcast with intermittent rain, but light winds meaning the RSB team could set about re-stepping both masts before the breeze returned.“With the help of Andy and Nancy Kitchener (7C Rigging) and the on-board crew the operation was completed with no problems and by 5 in the afternoon the boat was heading back to her berth before the breeze returned over night.”Twizzle will complete her final refit work in Palma then head up to France where she will pick up her new suit of North Sails and RSB will complete her sailing sea trials.By Gemma Fottles

The Singapore Yacht Show 2013 featured the strongest line up yet. One of the stars of the show was S/Y Twizzle. Launched by award-winning Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman in 2010, eco-friendly 57.5m Twizzle is an example of the growing number of superyachts venturing off the Med-Caribbean milk run. Singapore Yacht Show kicks off this week

The Singapore Yacht Show has announced the attendance of the 59.30 metre Benetti superyacht I Dynasty. Being presented by SuperYachtsMonaco, who have just listed the yacht for sale, it is her first time on the market since her launch in 2008. Strong line up for Singapore Yacht Show grows

The 12th annual Asia Superyacht Rendezvous took place off the stunning west coast of Phuket from Dec 16-19. The 2012 event drew an impressive fleet of top class luxury vessels to the shores of Bang Tao bay for three days of fun both on and off the cerulean waters of the Andaman Sea.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142374/image/large-87da4b93a70fefd6d89c60ed8da3b595.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142374">The spectacular line-up at the 2012 ASYR event included some of the finest sail and motor yachts ever to grace Asian waters. The multi-award winning vessel stood out not only for her size, but also her obvious high specifications and build quality. Designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon, the yacht moves through the water effortlessly even in light winds, and her beautifully proportioned teak decks and clean, uncluttered lines made for a breathtaking display of contemporary style and exceptional performance. "It's great to see impressive yachts like Twizzle cruising in Asian waters," said Andy Dowden, who is also event director for the annual PIMEX International Boat Show on Phuket. The twin masted schooner S/Y Yanneke Too by British Designer Bill Dixon boasts a sleek, elegant design that has earned her the moniker of a "true gentlemen's yacht", and with the event's co-organiser Charlie Dwyer at the helm she certainly lived up to her reputation. Competing on finesse, the 33 metre aluminium cutter S/Y Shamoun, named after a warm desert wind, also drew a shutter frenzy with her fine wood finish and sophisticated, timeless style while the fabulous luxury charter yacht S/Y Asia easily kept pace with her larger cousins, helmed by a modest family crew of four dressed in festive santa hats.The cutter rig sloop makes for a superb sailing experience and is constantly chartered for trips out of Phuket, sailing to destinations as diverse as the Similans, Mergui Archipelago, Andaman islands, Malaysia, Bali, Lombok and Flores. Tailing the faster, more contemporary yachts on the race days was S/Y Si Datu Bua, which Dowden proclaimed the winner of the "cruising class". Just six metres shorter than her twin sister S/Y Silolona, she's a hand-crafted modern classic that beautifully reflects the history and spirit of the Indonesian archipelago. The Phinisi offered a truly majestic sight with her five red sails raised and her proud wooden hull splitting the indigo seas, and the guests invited aboard all agreed she offered a unique, fascinating and supremely comfortable way to experience the event from the sea, taken care of by the inimitable Indonesian crew.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142379/image/large-4b7688614c8f39d3b0fd79a82b4a05e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142379">As the sailing fleet followed the wind, owners and guests aboard the impressive contingent of motor yachts enjoyed the races and splendid tropical views from the comfort of unrivalled luxury vessels. As she did last year, Phuket based M/Y Maverick generously participated as the start boat for the sailing events, a contribution no doubt much appreciated by the race officials, especially when waiting for the wind to pick up on the second day. The 42 metre motor yacht's distinctive design and outstanding range of first class communication systems made her the perfect choice for the role. Several other motor vessels remained moored in the bay, providing a fitting frame for the on-water proceedings and a superlative location for guests and owners to relax and take in the sun kissed surroundings. At 65 metres, M/Y Callisto boasts one of the largest sun decks on a Feadship of her size and she is therefore perfectly suited to Phuket's kind, sunny climate. Equally impressive, M/Y Samax is a custom built masterpiece with stunning exterior and interiors courtesy of celebrated Andrew Winch Designs. Then, of course, there was M/Y Helix, which smoothly followed the sailing yachts around the course. Her exceptional finish and top class onboard facilities were designed by De Voogt Naval Architects with immaculate attention to detail, and guests also admired the a stylish nautical interiors created by Sinot Yacht Design.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142380/image/large-8916849a1d69cf9bc40fa3c6401636de.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142380">As the two days of sailing came to an end, all the yachts lined up in formation and motored across Bang Tao bay while Phuket's leading aerial photography and video company, Helicam, launched a remote piloted helicopter from the foredeck of M/Y Helix to capture the unique and spectacular display of marine excellence in all its glory. After the parade, children and crew from all attending boats dressed up and joined in the fun for the Rendezvous Booty Treasure Hunt. Fancy dress costumes ranged from pirate gear to banana suits, and the teams ran along the beach, jumped in tenders, and scrambled under the jetty to find a series of clues that eventually led them to the treasured chest. The team from Yanneke Too claimed the winning prize, but all the kids shared the gold wrapped chocolate booty. "Si Datu Bua and Silolona had their pirate flags flying high and everyone ran from one clue to the next as if their lives depended on it. It was very exciting to watch," said Samantha Caalsen, event manager. Hostess Patti was a mine of anthropological knowledge on Indonesia's rich culture and history and her two striking wooden schooners are infused with a unique connection to the past.The second evening saw the return of the now famous Feadship Challenge, which requires teams of owners and their crew to build a model sailboat from basic materials under a time limit, which they then race up and down troughs of water using only their lungs to fill the sails. After a delicious buffet and a few glasses of beer and wine to loosen the crowd, this year's contest was hotly contested, with plenty of design savvy on display and a strong showing from the teams in some closely fought races. The crew from M/Y Callisto eventually triumphed, defeating the team from M/Y Samax with an impressive display of human wind power.The Gala Dinner followed on the final evening, with a superb buffet spread prepared and served by the Angsana Laguna F&amp;B team in a beachside marquee. After an enchanting performance of Thai music and traditional dance, followed by a guest appearance from the resort's resident baby elephant, the assembled throng sat down to enjoy the fine cuisine and beautiful setting.As the food and wine flowed, Victoria Lister, commercial director at Boat International, long time international media sponsor for the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous, presented the ‘Spirit of the Regatta’ prize, which this year went to Yanneke Too whose skipper and crew have been active supporters of the event throughout its 12 year history. The first night of the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous has kicked off with a bang. The late afternoon shower threatened to dampen the spirits, however failed dismally. Angsana Laguna spent the day welcoming guests to their magical surroundings, greeting them with great enthusiasm and everyone seemed to be getting rather lost in the atmosphere. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142143/image/large-14220a9a51c7a4a2f5e188ee5e4de715.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142143">On the first evening local and international sponsors, media and guests, as well as the captains and owners of all the participating yachts were welcomed to Bang Thao Bay. They then went on to fight the waves and board speedboats to the Indonesian style Phinisi, Silolona for the opening cocktail party. As guests arrived on board Silolona, they were greeted by the enthusiastic crew. Superyacht Twizzle scoops up four design awards

A day of showers and fickle breezes left racers frustrated in Porto Cervo in Sardinia, Italy as conditions forced the cancellation of the first race of the 2011 Dubois Cup. A strong fleet of eight superyachts and numerous spectator craft assembled for the 13.00 start on Sunday, which was initially postponed but then formally abandoned when the breeze fizzled out at around 14.50. The first boats in the pursuit race were already under way when the announcement came, with the rest of the fleet maneuvering for position to cross the line at three-minute intervals. The cancellation was especially galling for the race professionals aboard defending champions <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2011">Ganesha</a>, as they looked set to cross the line within seconds of their start time. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/135332/image/large-ffeef0ac373842a8da60249c4c18f608.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124996">“It was bad luck,” said the owner of the 39-metre sloop. “It would have been a terrific start. But it was very good practice for tomorrow.” The water bombs were believed to have originated from the 40-metre <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/694">Tenaz</a>, whose slingshot crews first targeted the giant ketch <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/796">Twizzle</a>. The battle soon engulfed <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/227">Drumbeat</a>, which at one stage was heroically engaged on both sides. With an eye on the weather, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda sports director Edoardo Recchi explained: “We had seven showers during the day, which tended to kill the wind. It varied between three and seven knots, and then turned to 050 degrees and died. It’s not a common occurrence here, but does sometimes happen during the break period between springtime and the reliable thermal breezes of the summer.” He added: “Pressure has been exceptionally low, 989millibars this morning, but the depression is passing over. Both previous Dubois Cup events, in 2007 and 2009, have supported child cancer charities following the diagnosis of Minna Dubois, at aged four, with neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer with low survival rates. Yacht designer Ed Dubois explained that the new fund has been set up to give focused support for research into the disease. In a moving speech Ed’s wife Honor Dubois spoke of the strains that serious childhood illnesses place on families. Introduced by Ed Dubois as “a combination of saint and superwoman”, Minna’s oncologist Janice Kohler gave a lucid exposition of the direction of current research into immunotherapy as a treatment for neuroblastoma, as an alternative to chemo and radio therapies. Survival rates for the disease have increased to 40 per cent, from just 10 per cent 30 years ago. After four years of treatment, ten-year-old Minna, who is attending the regatta with her brother and sisters, is doing well. Twenty-seven of the most spectacular sailing yachts on the water are today berthed in Porto Cervo, eagerly anticipating the first day of racing at the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2011. Edoardo Recchi, Sports Director at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda comments: 'We are very happy to have twenty-seven superyachts racing at the 2011 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta. In the interests of safe racing and in particular collision avoidance, the ISAF Executive Committee has authorised some changes to the sailing instructions to accommodate safety initiatives from the newly formed Superyacht Racing Association. Most notably, yachts in the cruising class are obliged to maintain a 40 metre separation and communicate their intention via VHF radio when they are close to this minimum separation area. The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2011 begins tomorrow

In the matchless surroundings of "the best yacht club in the world" the stage is set for a classic superyachting event. The regatta village at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is buzzing, the yachts have assembled, and registration is under way for the third Dubois Cup. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/135301/image/large-688c1c65cf4dc2fa991108d55ac8aa2b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/134306">"We're really looking forward to it," says Amy Galloway, captain of the 40-metre sloop <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/694">Tenaz</a> - a seasoned campaigner in previous superyacht meetings but making her first appearance at the Dubois Cup. The intricate coastline around Port Cervo is a favourite among racing skippers, for its dramatic scenery and unpredictable wind shifts. The sound between the Maddalena islands and the Sardinian mainland has a reputation for blowing hard - although the forecast for the weekend is currently for light conditions. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/135302/image/large-1c1e77bb50652a36d80961e9b7e30b3d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/130404">The 30-metre Pendennis-built <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2284">Nostromo</a> is another Cup debutante. "We've hired Harold Cudmore as tactician," says her owner, Andrew Cook. "After all, you've got to make an effort. I've brought my son along and four of his friends as extra crew. But mainly it's a bit of fun." With no more than 10 knots of wind currently promised by the met men over the next two days, the racing will be a test of tactics. "These yachts get going in about eight knots of breeze," says Malcolm McKeon of Dubois Naval Architects. Superyacht Twizzle wins award

The Dubois Cup will take place this year on June 4th, 5th and 6th and is once again hosted by and organized in conjunction with the YCCS in Porto Cervo. This exciting regatta brings together many Dubois-designed yachts, owners, crew, industry associates and media alike. The event immediately precedes the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta with one racing rest-day in-between. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/134306/image/large-b59b2eb0d345b91f4caf4e9f47373b67.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/134306">As in previous years, there will be two days of racing and the evening events will include the owners and guests‘ dinner and a prize-giving party following the close of racing on the 6th. There are currently eight yachts confirmed for participation. Included in the line-up are three of our most prominent launches from the last year, 58.4m Kokomo, 57.5m Twizzle and 49.7m Zefira. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/134307/image/large-6bfc5c99e2b9efb0454999f913efb123.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/134307">The Dubois Cup is a non-profit event which aims to raise funds for the vital research programs developing treatment for the childhood cancer, Neuroblastoma. Currently, the survival rate if a child contracts the cancer is only 40%. To put this statistic into perspective, in 20 years with steady funding and increased publicity, the survival rate of children who contract Leukemia has increased from 10% to 90%. Ed Dubois is committed to increasing the survival rate of children who develop Neuroblastoma by funding specific research programs, peer-reviewed by specialists in this field. Additionally, Dubois are proud to announce, in partnership with Yacht Carbon Offset, they will be balancing the estimated carbon footprint of this year’s Dubois Cup, including an allowance for participants’ air travel to Sardinia. Dubois believes that the Dubois Cup 2011 is the first Superyacht regatta to neutralize its carbon footprint in this way. This magnificent vessel, built by Royal Huisman in The Netherlands, and designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon, catches the eye with her powerful contemporary lines and integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. He optimized <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/796">Twizzle'</a>s beam and added some 120 tons of internal ballast to improve stiffness and stability beneath 1,780 m2 of sail, set on a ketch rig. Royal Huisman launches superyacht Twizzle

The beautiful gardens of the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel, with the 51 metre schooner Meteor resting at anchor in the bay below, provided a magnificent setting for guests arriving at Royal Huisman’s 125th anniversary celebrations in Monaco on September 23rd. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129105/image/large-1349759b526fea0c7399c09d0aa40891.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129105">Alice Huisman took centre stage to greet guests and to unveil the eagerly-anticipated commemorative book “Royal Huisman, 125 Years – The Spirit of Individuality”. Written by Stephen Chipperfield and designed by Rod Teasdale, the book is filled with fascinating information, anecdotes and stories, complemented by outstanding photography reflecting five generations of Huisman ownership and achievement. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129106/image/large-aa0626f5f3ecbede85348d99f6b14eb9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129106">Alice Huisman drew on information uncovered by research for the book to paint an intriguing picture of past experiences at the yard (including extremely amusing correspondence between her grandfather and an exasperated customer) to underline the fact that few of today’s challenges have not been previously experienced in some shape or form in the 125 years since 1884. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129107/image/large-3eaad5b89097e4db0f9606f6e0b8e0c1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129107">Legendary German racing yachtsman Albert Büll – who took delivery of his first Huisman-built <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2261">Saudade</a> in 1973 and his third in 1994 – was presented with the first copy of the book in the company of his wife Christa. The owners of the 57.5 metre ketch <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/796">Twizzle</a>, the first launch of the next 125 years, were similarly honoured. Finally, in the company of her sisters Caroline and Mirjam, Alice Huisman presented the third copy to their mother, Ali Huisman. Following the welcoming speech, Huisman owners of long standing mingled and chatted with those who have more recently joined this special fraternity. Representatives of the superyacht media, naval architects, designers, project managers, captains and industry leaders were there too, enjoying relaxed conversation, fine wines and a buffet meal with one another and with members of the Huisman team and family. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129108/image/large-2a6ec46f5e1bc36d301b7532d36c96b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129108">At precisely 21.30 the laser show commenced. Royal Huisman celebrates 125th anniversary in Monaco

Photos By Hans WesterinkUnder a rich blue sky on a November Saturday morning the massive Alustar aluminum hull of Twizzle was rolled out of her construction hall for routine turning. Four cranes performed the seamless manoeuvre with the look and speed of synchronised swimmers, placing the upright hull on a build cradle that will be her home until completion in the Spring of 2010. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126185/image/large-bf6158f450e4ca2572fc1f8556d36e91.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126185">The preceding days and the spirit of the project can best be summed up in her proud owners personal note of congratulation: “On behalf of the entire Twizzle design and build team, I would like to thank everyone at Royal Huisman for the wonderful and constructive way that everyone approaches the design and build of S/Y Twizzle. The last couple of days has been extremely constructive and has really pushed forward the build. I must also compliment and congratulate everyone involved in the design and creation of the magnificent hull. We are in total awe at how professionally the hull was wheeled out of the shed, lifted in the air by four cranes and turned right side up and dropped into the build frame. It was amazing to behold. [Royal Huisman adds: The largest single piece lift and turn by the yard] Not a raised voice or moment of any panic or stress. It was a pure master class on how to run a complex operation.""And for [my guests and me] we were absolutely thrilled to see the hull in all its glory rotate in front of our eyes rather like the wonderful 3D computer model. But to see her immense scale hanging in mid air was just the most thrilling sight! Sunlight and good weather was arranged for the occasion. And we have to say; the construction of the hull and the structural beams is just a work of art – a veritable sculpture. During the 2007 Superyacht Cup in Palma, I sailed a day on the 52m gaff rigged schooner Meteor. Although I was already aware of the quality of Royal Huisman, I was very much impressed. From bow to stern, keel to mast, everything was perfectly done and she sailed like a dream. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124409/image/large-6c7fe18670ccda6ebebfd94633784b9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124409">Visiting Royal Huisman is always a great pleasure, and my last visit was no exception. She is a yacht of many firsts for Royal Huisman: • the first yacht completely styled by the team of Redman Whiteley Dixon, with Todhunter Designers providing interior decoration • the first build with naval architecture by Ed Dubois • the first sailing yacht with a flying bridge The first plates for her hull and superstructure, which will be build in-house, were being cut. She is scheduled for launch and sea trials in March 2008. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124410/image/large-c1e95c2a7332a10b2a247b4819809fa1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124410">We continue our tour to the biggest shed, the one where the 89m Athena (2004) was built, and currently occupied by the largest order of Royal Huisman, the 58m <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/375">Ethereal</a>. Inspired by the 43m Juliet (1993), Ethereal promises to be one of the most complex and advanced superyachts ever build. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124411/image/large-05f7c4029f11ed2e44ea48a884c6374c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124411"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124412/image/large-071b4075a7682bd8e01bb791124529cb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124412">Conceived by an owner from the technology industry, she has some very special features. Perhaps the most-talked-about feature of this project is the hybrid electromechanical propulsion system that allows the yacht, under sail, to charge its technically-advanced bank of lithium polymer batteries, instead of using generators. This energy bank, in turn, is the alternative power plant, enabling Ethereal to raise anchor, motor, hoist sails and run ship’s systems, all under stored electrical power for hours at a time. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124413/image/large-9b71f671ba279e08547139cbc51612da.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124413"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124414/image/large-c0fa489f3624d5aa4934b0d443d5a165.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124414">Ethereal is well underway, with the interior being installed now, and is on schedule for delivery in the autumn of this year. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124415/image/large-c2e403d4b91bdb530299a99d4b3151d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124415">Royal Huisman is currently not only building three new yachts, but also completing a major refit on <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/636">Juliet</a>. It was difficult to compare the sizes of Ethereal, being 15 meters longer, and Juliet, as the first was in a very big shed, making her appear smaller than she really is and the second was in a much smaller shed, making her look bigger. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124416/image/large-1887ebda3b808293580cab665d2733bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124416"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124417/image/large-390e293db5ee81a5d7d2eb5b50304ba7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124417">Next door to Juliet, the re-creation of Tommy Sopwith’s beautiful Super J <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/384">Endeavour II</a> was taking place. She is the third Huisman yacht for the same owner, following <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/595">Hyperion</a> in 1999 and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/288">Athena</a> in 2004. The hull had just been turned and she was made ready for installation of the wiring and piping. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124418/image/large-014e2e0f8611dc722c96e0386e626fe8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124418"> Interest in these legendary racing yachts has grown apace, with a number of restorations (including the smaller <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621">Endeavour</a> by Royal Huisman in 1989) and the 2006 recreation of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432">Ranger</a>, the “Super-J” that defeated Endeavour II in 1937. Under J-Class Association rules, some design features are restricted historically, but performance can be optimized through a more flexible approach to sail area, ballast ratio, righting moment and build materials. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124419/image/large-d4cfe110be93d5cc85397354e7a0ed4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124419"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124420/image/large-446d52642c8e66c6940d42c718ec08e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124420">As a result, naval architects Gerard Dijkstra &amp; Partners are overseeing the build of Endeavour II’s hull in Alustar, with spars and rig in carbon composite to create a yacht that should demonstrate the full potential of Charles E Nicholson’s original design. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124421/image/large-6f84db10b90efd73cd2dba0d55712534.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124421">Endeavour II is slated for handover in time for the 2009 J class Spring racing season. Royal Huisman is one of the very few shipyards that build everything in-house, from the hull to the interior. All yacht building principles are covered in their 30.000 square facility and one of the most interesting places is the furniture workshop. Before the furniture is moved into the yacht, it’s first build on a mall, so everything fits perfectly in the yacht afterwards. Thus not only improving the efficiency, but also the quality, as people don’t walk in each other’s ways during the construction. Royal Huisman – The super (sail) yacht dream factory

An experienced owner has brought an exciting team together to create a stunning new project that lists three important “firsts” for Royal Huisman: <ul> <li>Our first yacht completely styled by the gifted team of Redman Whiteley Dixon, with Todhunter Designers providing interior decoration. </li> <li>Our first build with naval architecture by Ed Dubois. </li> <li>Our first sailing yacht with a flying bridge. </li>
</ul><div align="left"></div><div align="center"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122710/image/large-987b10cae3b5fc3acb098e705acf492f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122710"></div>A very motivating aspect of this project for Royal Huisman is the comprehensive involvement of the owners alongside the architects, the stylists and the yard – a real working partnership within a stimulating team culture.<div align="left"></div>The owners have brought significant experience with previous yachts (including a 47m Perini Navi and a 55m Feadship) to this project, providing a well-informed focus for their team choices and challenges. They have particular interests in technology and design and participate in frequent meetings at the yard, at the designers, and at their own offices to stimulate ideas and momentum.<div align="left"></div>Justin Redman and his team have responded to the brief with a graceful flying bridge offering sleekness, style and amenity. Redman and Emily Todhunter have defined the interior, with owners’ and guests’ accommodation abaft the engine room and the crew area forward. A central dining area and separate saloon are amidships above the engine room, with the main galley on a mezzanine deck and the pilothouse on a raised deck. Two 6.4m Castoldi tenders stow in a garage on the main deck, above the crew cabins. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122711/image/large-7bb1bfa65e71d4ecac4b461ce738e1fc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122711"><div align="left"></div>With a specification calling for the amenity of a motor yacht within a high performance sailing yacht, Dubois reduced wetted surface and set a swing keel within a 3.8m-draft fixed keel. He optimized beam and added some 120 tons of internal ballast to improve stiffness and stability beneath 1,780 m2 of sail, set on a ketch rig. The mainmast is just under 62m, to clear Panama’s Bridge of the Americas at low water. Advanced lightweight composites will be used for masts, deck hatches and other components, with PBO for rigging.<div align="left"></div>The owners chose Royal Huisman, we understand, not only for our reputation, Dutch spirit and teamwork, but because they valued the contribution our “all under one roof” building philosophy would make to the efficiency, quality and harmony of the design and build process.<a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/796">Twizzle</a> will sail away from Vollenhove in early Spring 2010.
