Kıvanç Nart has been working in the yachting industry for more than two decades. Over the last five years he has been working closely with the team at the Turkish shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akyacht (Company)">AKYACHT</a> on construction of the 85-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1591" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Victorious85.0m (278'10&quot;)Akyacht2021">Victorious</a>. Over the decades I have been involved with many large superyacht projects, first in engineering positions and then as project manager.&nbsp;In 2011 I founded my own project management company named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4645" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nart & Roe Partners (Company)">Nart &amp; Roe Partners</a>, which I created alongside the late Mr. Halit Roe and Ms. Narten Roe and together we completed seven superyacht projects on the shipyard and owner side over the last 11 years. We are all well-aware that this is not a short-term target, but we have enough experience, financial backup and vision to achieve it.In short term, let's say the first half of 2022, we aim to sign at least two motor yacht projects. The minimum size will be 60 metres and one plus-80 metre. We are capable to build superyacht projects up to 100 metres with the existing facilities so I think this is an achievable goal for this year!It should not be forgotten that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akyacht (Company)">AKYACHT</a> is a new shipyard, however neither the owner himself, nor the managers and staff are new in the industry. Due to the collective experience and expertise behind this team, the owner never hesitated to embrace the largest superyacht project ever conceived in Turkey, which indicates the aspirations of this business. In a very short time <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akyacht (Company)">AKYACHT</a> heavily invested in establishing its own facilities and more importantly in rounding up a highly qualified crew, that already have a good understanding of working together over the past years. One part of our team is busy in the studies for the new proposals, together with the potential clients that we have a relationship with before and after the Monaco Yacht Show 2021. We are creating new GA plans, exterior styling and are heavily busy with budget studies for our clients.In addition to that, after the Monaco Yacht show, the owner of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akyacht (Company)">AKYACHT</a> decided to extend the shipyard capacity and started the construction works to enlarge the existing shipyard capabilities. Parallel to this decision he also invested in the additional lands in the same free trade zone area to build support units such as prefabrication shed/section building, metalworking, CNC cutting and warehouses.&nbsp;Meantime, we are working with well-known brokerage companies and searching for the best available speculative market projects to extend our investment. AKYACHT launches 85m explorer superyacht Victorious in Turkey

Fourteen years after her keel was laid on the other side of the world, an 85-metre motor yacht with a colourful history is nearing completion at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akyacht (Company)">AKYACHT</a> in Turkey.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119606/image/large-5e641b3125c8db8a0466b258ea13fd27.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119606">Some readers may recall a 77-metre explorer-style yacht with exterior styling by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/25" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Michael Leach Design Ltd. (Company)">Michael Leach Design</a> that started life back in 2006 as Hull U-77 at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/924" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marco Yachts (Company)">Marco Yachts</a> in northern Chile under the project name Gin Tonic II. Rumours that the confidential project had stalled were confirmed in 2011 when it was acquired by serial superyacht owner Graeme Hart in New Zealand, who had the unfinished vessel towed across the Pacific Ocean to Auckland.&nbsp;Renamed Project Weta,&nbsp;in early 2013 it was moved up the coast to Whangarei for completion work but was then listed for sale still unfinished. In February 2016 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser Yachts</a> announced they had sold the yacht and later that year it arrived in Turkey at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akyacht (Company)">AKYACHT</a>, a new shipyard at the eastern end of the Marmara Sea, under the project name Grand Seraglio.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119605/image/large-5c00b4a85d9712e03c66de1e3dbe9997.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119605">Fast forward to late 2019 and I’m standing under the imposing bow of the vessel now called Project&nbsp;Victorious, accompanied by the shipyard’s general manager, Deniz Kaymaz: “The yacht arrived in Turkey in June 2016, by which time she had already travelled 37,000 nautical miles on her own bottom with zero hours on her engines,”&nbsp;says Kaymaz as he inspects the hull fairing and last coats of primer after it was decided to upgrade from a commercial to a full superyacht finish. “We got quotations from various shipyards in Turkey to complete the build, but the experienced owner, who has a fleet of yachts, eventually decided to set up his own facility and by March 2017 we were ready to haul her out and start work.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119602/image/large-eb3ab1397cb205762d8f64cf2697bd6e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119602">As the keel was laid in 2006, the yacht is being completed to LY2 criteria. The first task was to increase her overall length to 85 metres by adding a bowsprit and six metres in the stern to make way for an indoor pool inside the lower deck beach club. The owner’s apartment on the bridge deck was also expanded and the original sun deck (the only deck built of aluminium) replaced with a new enclosed top deck. These two major modifications bumped up her already considerable gross tonnage to just over 2,300GT. Originally slated for completion last May, a late decision to switch to UK-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Design</a> for the interior design pushed back the schedule and the yacht is now expected to splash at the end of this year.“Around 500 square metres of joinery arrived with the yacht in containers along with other equipment,” says Kaymaz over Turkish coffee before we go aboard. “We had a local designer working on the project, but the owner decided to bring in&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>&nbsp;to refresh the interior concept to better suit the tastes of today’s charter clients. That delayed our schedule as all the fixed furniture and fittings are being manufactured in-house by the shipyard.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119664/image/large-6eaa6071e7e56bd6afc09b48910baa4b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119664">The new interior design makes use of some of the original materials but also introduces new ones with satin or textured finishes for a more contemporary and residential ambience that still has a nautical flavour. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119663/image/large-fdcfa5d79a703acb51383798fe2ac452.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119663">Teak and white oak provide a discreetly neutral background that is punctuated with walnut, macassar and eucalyptus, silver travertine and Calacata marble, leather and linen, slate and onyx, rippled glass and hammered bronze accessories. The overall tone is smartly casual and subtly masculine.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119603/image/large-8f9d46558f1cb5b91f3294fa4bedc581.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119603">We begin our tour on the top deck in the new cigar lounge, conceived as a “man cave” with walk-in humidor, wine cellar, bar, overhead skylights, openable forward windows and sliding glass doors onto the lofty aft deck. There is also a marble-clad, wood-burning fireplace, which meant installing extra fire insulation and a smoke extraction system as required by Lloyds Register. The lounge has effectively been built on top of the former sun deck and brings the total number of decks to six, including the under lower deck that houses the crew mess/lounge, laundry, dry and cold stores, and other technical spaces. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119676/image/large-2bdb4588e5dda5ceb3e6802c80c56d62.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119676">“We’ve been very mindful of adding weight up top,” says Kaymaz. “We carried out initial stability tests when the hull arrived, so we have a good idea of how far we can go without affecting stability, but the whole structure is on load sensors and we keep close track of the weight going on the boat.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119672/image/large-2831fdb5186c31930feac1aae3448daa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119672"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119670/image/large-b6a0a59cc05a602156862180d343da3a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119670">The layout of the owner’s or bridge deck also changed as the original arrangement had two VIP suites instead of the master stateroom that now looks out over the aft deck and a private Jacuzzi (the suite’s footprint was extended aft to increase the size of the bathroom and walk-in wardrobe, and if you look carefully at the yacht’s profile the enclosed upper deck is slightly longer than the deck below). In addition to the captain’s cabin behind the wheelhouse, there are two cabins that can be used during charter by children and accompanying staff.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119651/image/large-004d06ed8e8f1844d04cb4ebf54bbd69.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119651"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119655/image/large-c919c7b4736069a1106654824b58e107.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119655">The upper deck has remained more or less as originally envisaged with a sky lounge, formal dining room and facing cocktail lounge, and a forward observation salon that overlooks the touch-and-go helipad in the bow (although not a certified helideck, this new addition can accommodate some of the bigger twin-engine helicopters such as the Augusta Westland AW 101 VVIP). On the aft deck there is a guest Jacuzzi and the overhead bonnet has been extended to create more shading for al fresco dining with overhead heating and glass windbreaks to create the feeling of a winter garden.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119643/image/large-36342d92e0dbd5920bb7b104a467efbc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119643">A new addition on the main deck is a fully soundproofed 10-seat cinema room, which doubles as a video gaming room for older children (there is also a playroom for younger kids). An industrial-spec galley was designed with the help of a professional chef. There are four en-suite guest cabins on main deck and a VIP suite with an adjacent living room. A further four cabins on the lower deck are finished to guest standards, but these are for use by staff or supernumeraries.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119681/image/large-f98a87fc1d5a2920ef5d4e64dc145584.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119681">It was a conscious decision not to have garages in the hull that open at water-level, as even modest waves can sometimes interrupt tender operations. Instead – and in true explorer style – a variety of guest tenders are stored on the main deck aft in air cradles that can be moved around and launched by two six-tonne-capacity cranes. The choice of tenders and toys, such as a 16-metre high-speed catamaran, landing craft or sport fisherman, will depend on charter requirements.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119645/image/large-2a981012b0975e2de9ebde3277e66a1d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119645">Having no tender garage on the lower deck meant more real estate could be devoted to the beach club, which covers a huge area of more than 200 square metres when the three fold-down platforms are deployed. Amenities include a beach lounge, gym, massage room, beauty parlour, hammam and a 5.5x2-metre contraflow heated swimming pool that can be filled with freshwater or seawater.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119604/image/large-43badd544174af8165ae6a419744069e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119604"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akyacht (Company)">AKYACHT,</a> which is still undergoing finishing work of its own with more workshops due to be built, is clearly determined to make an impact with Project Victorious and is cutting no corners. The technical specifications have been tweaked where appropriate, from replacing galvanised piping and cable trays with stainless steel to upgrading major machinery. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119683/image/large-579d61242b458812c3a06f603c861ffc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119683">The yacht was already fitted with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">CAT</a> 3512B main engines and four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">CAT</a> C9 generators, but the latter were underpowered at 200kW each and all four would have had to be running when underway, so two have been swapped out for more powerful C18 465kW units for redundancy and more efficient power management. A second pair of Quantum stabiliser fins have also been added, which will be 25% more effective at roll damping than the original single pair alone. The small Kiwi company has, by their own admission, been keeping a low media profile over the years with much of their work shrouded in secrecy. But as the projects they are working on get bigger and bigger this is beginning to change, with their latest work including the design and styling of the impressive 107 metre and 116 metre explorer yachts built by the Norwegian shipyard, Kleven.

Oscar Mike – the name a play on the military code for ‘on the move’ – was founded by New Zealanders, Kyle Dick and Blair Lewis, who first met when studying naval architecture in Australia. Upon graduation, Dick went on to work at Alloy Yachts International, a company where he had once worked as a boat builder, and Lewis, previously a practicing electrician, moved into work in the commercial sector in Perth, Australia. The two kept in touch and in 2010, feeling that the time was right to strike out alone, Oscar Mike the naval architecture consultancy was born.

 

Together with a small team of specialist designers, Dick and Lewis have undertaken a wide range of work on vessels including superyachts and conversion projects as well as in the commercial sector. “We work with individual clients as well as contracting to other design firms and shipyards in need of our design services,” says Dick. To date the team have partnered with companies including Alloy Yachts, Kleven, Marin Teknik, MMD Naval Architects, and Naval Architecture &amp; Marine Solutions (NMS) amongst others. General services include supplying weight estimates, stability analysis, rules interpretation, structure and class drawings, all the way through to a full design service. The latter is an avenue that the team draws immense satisfaction from. “We really enjoy being a part of the whole design process and helping translate a client’s vision into reality,” says Dick.

 

Until the yard’s unfortunate closure in 2015 Oscar Mike had a long standing relationship with Alloy Yachts, assisting them with design work for a number of builds including the 56.4 metre Mondango 3 and the 44 metre Encore, as well as concepts and packages for potential projects the yard was bidding on, and also aiding in refit work on their existing vessels. Naturally the loss of the Alloy work stream was a challenge for Oscar Mike. “It’s certainly been a big change but we’ve been able to successfully navigate it,” says Dick. “We’ve fortunately been kept very busy with our other projects.” Paying tribute to Alloy as one of the world’s best superyacht builders, like so many industry players Dick finds it hard to believe the yard is no longer operational.

Out of their extensive work list their biggest projects by far have been for New Zealand’s richest man and notoriously private superyacht owner, Mr. Graeme Hart. The pair first worked for Hart on the restyling of the incomplete 77 metre U77, managing the design side of the project prior to its sale by Fraser Yachts in early 2016. “It was great being involved in that project and our relationship with Mr. Hart and his team grew from there,” says Dick. Oscar Mike was then commissioned to work on Hart’s new build project, the 107 metre Ulysses, which was completed by Kleven earlier this year. Hart also commissioned a second new build, U116, which Oscar Mike have also been heavily involved in and is scheduled for completion in mid-2017.

For U77, U107 and U116, Oscar Mike acted as the owner’s naval architect; undertaking the exterior styling, class and flag approved GA’s, concept developments and acting as design liaison with the build yards. “We worked very closely with Mr. Hart who has had extensive involvement in the arrangements and has enjoyed the freedom of customising the layouts and exploring exterior styling options with our guidance,” says Dick. “It really is groundbreaking what Mr. Hart has done with this kind of explorer boat. He has incredible vision.” Oscar Mike’s experience has proved favorable when working on these projects and in assisting with the overall process.

 

These two new builds have meant that Oscar Mike have enjoyed the opportunity to work with big superyacht names and outfits, including H2 Yacht Design and Redman Whiteley Dixon, which have worked on the Kleven builds U107 and U116 respectively. Building on these interactions the long-term aim for Oscar Mike is to keep increasing their industry presence and grow the business’ international profile.

As for future projects, the 116 metre build arrived at Kleven’s facilities in Bremerhaven for outfitting just yesterday, which along with various general consulting work is keeping them busy, and the pair are now collaborating on another – surprise, surprise – confidential project, a smaller commercial vessel. Dick describes it as unique but could not be persuaded to part with any more information. “It is hard to talk in detail about all that we do when we are working on such confidential projects, but it goes without saying that we are very proud to see Ulysses on the water and being put to her intended use, and are looking forward to seeing the 116 metre project completed as well,” says Dick. “The next few years are looking very exciting,” he tantalisingly concludes.

Superyacht U-77 has had a colourful and fascinating life since her beginnings in Chile in 2006. The vessel design has been enhanced to optimise its sea-keeping and manoeuvring abilities. Following tests by the Marin marine research facility in Holland, U-77 was awarded the highest rating for hull form and efficiency, promising her new Owner economical running costs and excellent range.She is arranged over 6 decks with a total floor area of 1260sqm and can accommodate 20 guests over ten luxurious cabins, including one master suite, a VIP cabin and 8 double rooms in total. She also accommodates up to 20 crew. Although a comprehensive amount of design work has been carried out, most of the completed interior has yet to receive its final finish, allowing her new Owner considerable scope for personalisation. The current general arrangement allows for a large sky lounge, cinema and formal lounge. Readers from Auckland have reported that Superyacht Weta, a 74.6 metre superyacht, has left the city, and has made her way to Ship Repair in Whangarei, the main centre of Northland, New Zealand. 74.6 Metre superyacht Weta on the move in New Zealand

Superyacht Weta, a 74.6 metre superyacht, which until recently was under construction at Marco Yachts in Chile, has arrived in Auckland New Zealand last week.
