This month, SuperYacht Times is interviewing a range of industry leaders in the brokerage sector to find out their views on the 2018 superyacht market. Today we focus on American Yacht market with Ale Navarro who is a broker for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2223" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="HMY Yacht Sales (Company)">HMY Yachts</a>. The Florida-based company experienced several noteworthy sales in 2018, including that of the 57.91-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/129" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Skyfall57.91m (189'12&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2010">Skyfall</a> in <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/the-58m-trinity-superyacht-skyfall-sold" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">February</a> and the 65-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2215" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Double Down65.0m (213'3&quot;)Codecasa S.p.A.2010">Double Down</a> in <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/sold-65m-codescasa-double-down" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">September</a>. Ale Navarro, who has previous experience as a motor yacht captain in addition to his current brokerage role, reflects on his observations of the 2018 yachting market and what he expects for the American yacht market in the future.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/65752/image/large-6084768b5300bd3d637c39124ee025be.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/65752">In 2017, 284 30+ metre used yachts were sold. Similarly, in 2018, around 280 (to be confirmed) used yachts were sold. How does your sentiment of the market compare? Do you see that the market is stable or growing?&nbsp;I see a growing market in large yachts. In 2018. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2223" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="HMY Yacht Sales (Company)">HMY Yachts</a> sold 28 motor yachts over 80 feet, mostly due to the increased demand of our client base. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/13997/image/large-69a02789d231d0b8a1d172e8df6f49ef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13997">Have you seen a shift in clients in the past year? For example, in nationality, age, gender or occupation - or any other observations you have noticed.&nbsp;Overall we are seeing more US-based clients than international. It seems that economic conditions are stronger here than in many other parts of the world.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/26915/image/large-42374eaa0f3e14323a3cadb7be116b85.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26915">What is your view on the pricing of yachts? Are there fewer reductions in price or are yachts sold closer to their asking prices?&nbsp;If an owner prices their yacht properly, there is usually no need for drastic price reductions. I see a bit of both worlds in used and new yachts.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/50188/image/large-a3a09d6c86dc23f5c14ae52d70bea16e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50188">Do you see a particular market that is very popular right now? For example, yachts of a certain size, certain builder or age?&nbsp;I believe there is a market for everyone (size, brand, year, etc). Everything sells at the right price. The last few years I’ve been involved in deals between 50 to 120 feet. I was the 2018 'top producer' for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> in America. I work closely with brands like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. What are you looking forward to?&nbsp;I expect 2019 to be another strong year in the superyacht segment of our business. Westport has announced the sale of the 36.58-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4611" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Moneypenny36.9m (121'1&quot;)">Miss Moneypenny</a>, with Jack Robertson at HMY acting as the listing agent. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/26915/image/large-42374eaa0f3e14323a3cadb7be116b85.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26915">Built in 2017 by Ocean Alexander and commissioned by an experienced owner in 2018, this motor yacht features an exterior and interior designed by Evan K Marshall.Able to accommodate up eleven overnight guests across five staterooms, she features an owner’s cabin on the main deck, complete with en-suite bathroom. Alexander Marine International, the importing company of Ocean Alexander Yachts, are to begin construction of their new Evolution Series yachts, the first model of which will be the 70E, at a shipyard facility in Florida, USA. This follows their move to cease the production of two 120ft hulls at US shipyard Christensen.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155570/image/large-3e2e8bab99f2c9080e10d02fbaa6da54.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155570">The Evolution Series is designed by Evan K. Marshall, who has worked with Ocean Alexander before when designing their Megayacht line. The new 70E model is significant as it’s Ocean Alexander’s first yacht to be powered by Volvo’s IPS POD Drives, and offers the option to stow a tender on the flybridge. Richard Allender, Director of US Operations comments, “The 70E is an example of the evolution within the Ocean Alexander product line. We were able to find a facility with incredible technologies to build this boat in a ground-breaking fashion and we’re all very excited for the debut.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155571/image/large-953c167d7e50f607cf9cc2283bbaf2f9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155571">In contrast to their new ties with the Floridian shipyard, Ocean Alexander have suspended the construction of two Ocean Alexander 120 superyachts which were being built at the Christensen shipyard, and these have now been shipped to Taiwan, where the yachts will be completed.By Charl van Rooy

Ocean Alexander to complete Christensen-built hulls in Taiwan

The first 120' yacht built in the alliance between Ocean Alexander and Christensen is on track for its debut at the 2012 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Currently, at over 65% completion, the shipyard has recently applied the topcoat exterior paint and major interior components are being installed.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138900/image/large-7b9eb7bb3c2ba0577c6a96289d2f2876.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128635">The wall coverings and interior cabinetry are beginning to go in, along with the custom stonework throughout the yacht. It is on schedule to hit the water in August of this year and after a month of applying finishing touches, it is scheduled to be delivered in September.The working relationship between Christensen and OA has been very positive. Both builders understand the process which makes for easy communication and collaboration between the two companies. This is the first of three contracts in the alliance between Christensen and Ocean Alexander, with the interior design done by Evan K. Marshall.
