Built for adventure, her design is that of Dutch firm Vripack and was engineered to travel independently around the world with an impressive range of 7,900 nautical miles. The 37.18-metre explorer superyacht Zeepaard (ex: Axantha) has been sold, it has been recently announced. Constructed entirely of aluminium by the French JFA shipyard and delivered in 2003, all elements of her design were undertaken by the team at Dutch company Vripack

Zeepaard underwent an extensive refit in 2011, with her owner subsequently embarking on an envy-inducing three year and three-month cruise around the world, travelling an impressive total of 50,000 nm and visiting 39 countries. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she has a cruising speed of 13 knots and a transatlantic range.

Zeepaard was sold in an inhouse deal with Camper &amp; Nicholsons Asia, who represented both the buyer and the seller. At the time of sale, she was listed at an asking price of $9,500,000.

Launched as Axantha in 2003 at JFA Chantier Naval in France, the 37 metre superyacht Zeepaard’s interior and exterior areas along with her naval architecture was designed by Vripack. Her Dutch owner acquired the yacht in 2009, and following a refit period embarked on a voyage to circumnavigate the globe. The yacht is currently listed for sale at an asking price of EUR 8,50,000. Zeepaard is currently moored in Palma de Mallorca.

The annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is one of the most important events on the superyacht calendar, and has become a platform for brokers and shipyards to display some of their flagship vessels to interested buyers. Her beautiful interior houses a unique dual-level master suite on main deck with an en suite bathroom found on the lower deck. FLIBS preview: Top 5 yachts for sale at the show

The Newport International Boat Show (NIBS) will kick off tomorrow. In Pictures: Superyachts in Newport

Zeelander is a company that was founded in the province of Zeeland, Holland in 2002, which is also where the name derives from. In 2008 the first yacht was introduced at the Monaco Yacht Show. I sat down with Sietse Koopmans of Zeelander, at this year’s Monaco show.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151073/image/large-24d3652ca9ce106eae976262ae9c8a39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151073">“In 2011 we moved the production to the States and started focusing on the US as a market, but now we have moved all production back to Holland. Zeelander is a 100% Dutch company”, Koopman says.“After our Z44, Z55, Z68, we are now introducing the Z164 and it’s all to do with the focus points of Zeelander: We want to be environmentally friendly; we want optimal Sound and Vibration control, we want to have a high recreation of value, as our guests on board are always very important, and the last focus point of the company is the cost of ownership. As a yacht owner myself. I know how much you can spend, or waste, actually, on a boat. We developed our yacht models with all these four things in mind”.“We started off as a bit of a hobby. I got sucked in to a company that was developing a little boat and in the end they evolved. The end of the story is that I took over the company, redid everything and we are proud of the end result, the Zeelander Z44.. We’ve built 30 now, with several in Europe and about twenty in the US. Recently we decided to move the production back to the Netherlands”.“Recently we also developed the Z55, which is going into production soon, which we introduced at the Cannes Boat show, and for the past three and a half years we have been developing the Z164. It was my dream, as you might say, to build my own boat and at some point I sold my company and decided to go buy a boat and start cruising. So I bought a 121-foot explorer called Zeepaard and I have been cruising that boat for the last 5 years, 65.000 miles, made over 40,000 photos and we anchored probably about 3,000 times. That gave me, I believe, the experience to build and develop a boat. I am a passionate engineer, I am a boater since birth, I have been to every major boat show and I have seen all boats. I think I am able to evaluate what is good and what is not. I drive the boat myself, I’m not a captain, however I have the license. I have a captain of course but I like to maneuver and do all those things. I am an owner, I pay the bills. I had 38 crews in the last 5 years. You have turnover of people. You learn from every angel and aspect of boating. You learn everything. So I believe we developed a boat that answers all the questions”.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151074/image/large-3e56212e10893f277430a5d5d0090638.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151074">“The end product is a boat which is 49.99 metres and 499 ton, which is extremely fuel efficient underway and even more efficient at anchor. We have a gas turbine generator set, which is 30 kilowatt, and we do an average rate of 15 kilowatt. That is extremely low for a 50 metre. This is a gas turbine, which will not pollute the water with oil and sop. It is vibration and noise free, so it is completely silent. Silence is one of my obsessions. I own a company that does noise and vibration control. You will experience that ship conditions, when you pull the plug you hear nothing. We will achieve this”.“The Z164 will have the most toys you have ever seen on a boat. It has two large 25 feet tenders, one diesel and one electric tender. Because most of the trips you do, like we did, we deployed that tender a thousand times for short trips to the shore. You put in the plug and you run the tender very efficiently..”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151075/image/large-afa90aa0c18ae0df6174def465edfd5a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/148834">I asked at which shipyard the yacht is going to be built. “This is still a secret”, Koopmans smiles. “I actually own a shipyard; the Moonen yacht facilities are mine, not the yard itself but the facilities. That is where we will build in the future. But we are in the process of teaming up with a major Dutch shipyard, very well known, but I cannot disclose the name yet. We’re in discussions and we will cooperate with the yard and then we will build under their name and most likely at their facilities.”When asked about construction time, Koopmans says “We anticipate the delivery to be 18 months. The shop drawings for the metal work are in process now and this is the main thing about the boat. We spent three and a half years and too much money on engineering. We also have 7 very strong leads. We are really excited about it but it’s really easy to get excited. We have a lot of interest for it. Simpson Marine reveals superyacht line up for Singapore Boat Show

At the end of last year I was invited by The Superyacht Group to attend the Global Superyacht Forum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. One of the most interesting sessions was the Armchair Interview, where Martin Redmayne, Chairman of The Superyacht Group, spoke with Bart Bouwhuis of Vripack and superyacht owner Sietse Koopmans. Mr Koopmans spoke about his current explorer motor yacht Zeepaard and a new 50 metre superyacht project he is developing with Vripack. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137898/image/large-be3abc16a29c5bd5d488e9baa22ef9af.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131389">Mr Koopmans is currently on a world tour on-board motor yacht <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1424">Zeepaard</a> and was happy to interrupt his tour for a couple of days to tell his story. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137899/image/large-cbe57054c543e3d533644ea0166f9d0d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137899">Dutch superyacht owner has been spending lots of free time on the water, as his father commissioned Vripack to build a boat back in the early 80’s. Mr Koopman explains; “I was basically the one using it. When the time came to do the circumnavigation, I was looking for a boat. I found a beautiful Vripack boat and that’s the one I chose. At the moment, during this trip, I developed the idea of building another one, a new one. And again with Vripack.” <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137900/image/large-b2b2fe0902bdca59c18c17efd3933751.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137900">Speaking about his new 50 metre superyacht project, he tells the audience it will be completely different than most other yachts out there. Bart Bouwhuis of Vripack comments, “The whole development has quite a fresh approach. It took a new pair of glasses for our guys, as Mr Koopmans was keen to really do it differently. This fresh approach, that’s exactly what the market needs. We all have seen that our market is quite good in building too complex boats.” The motor yacht will be built at a tight budget, however without sacrificing the quality. Mr Koopman stresses that nothing is going to be of inferior quality, however for example the yacht won’t have golden door handles or other things which are overly expensive. Everything on-board the diesel-electric superyacht is focussed on energy consumption; is there a more efficient air conditioning system, air handling system and of course lighting, but also things like the washing machine, which will use the warm water from the generator. To reduce the costs, the interior of the new yacht will be fabricated entirely in Turkey. One of the biggest changes is the use of a very small generator and batteries. As the owner travels a lot the yacht only spends around 5% of the time on shore power, and they have often experienced problems with shore power, explains Mr Koopmans. Therefore the new yacht will be on a generator all the time; a generator of 20 kilowatt which is quiet, you don’t smell and which can run 24/7. Martin Redmayne jumps into the conversation and ask how they are going to achieve that? “We are making use of batteries. Modern batteries are spectacularly efficient. Like the batteries you have in your phone, but really big. We’ll use batteries for high power consumption, like cooking. The generator is on constant load, ideal for the engine, so it doesn’t smoke, and it’s a perfect temperature, which is a big achievement". The new 50 metre superyacht for Mr Koopmans is designed by Cor D Rover, in an unsual design process, as Mr Koopmans explains, “A lot of designers, they have to design. They sit in the office and they don’t have the time to go and sit on a boat. Or they don’t have a boat. Cor D Rover has spent a week on my boat when we were in the process of designing the new boat. He highly appreciated the time because there were so many things he suddenly understood and saw in a different angle, when you actually experience it”. The new yacht will not look the current yacht Zeepaard. The current yacht could be described as a wheelhouse aft configuration, whilst the new yacht will be a forward configuration with a big aft deck, clean opens spaces and lots of windows. There will be many toys onboard the yacht and in the back will be a garage for a submarine. Commenting on the design Mr Koopmans says, “A lot of glass all around. Because your boat, in the end of the day, is your penthouse on the water. You want to enjoy the view. That’s probably the best selling feature on the boat, you have your real estate you can move around. Whereas if you have some real estate on the coast, you look at the sea. But if you’re on the boat you can look at the coast, which is nice". The owner intends to operate the 50 metre vessel with a crew of just six. How to achieve this? Mr. Koopmans, explains “You make the interior efficient, and you make the exterior efficient. We wash my boat now every other day, because it is a commercial looking sturdy boat. We have all these ribs on the inside of the bulwarks and you have the scuppers, which are extremely labour intensive to clean". "On the new boat we will be using Nano Glass, which is like when you put rainex on glass and therefore you don't need to wash it like normal glass. Its self-cleaning glass. In addition we will wash the boat with warm water. We are working on a new type of water maker, which works with heat. If we can do that we will have demineralised water, which will save an enormous amount in squeegee to take the water off after you cleaned the boat. You just spray off the boat and it all falls off. No need to do anything. It all results in the need for less people". The construction of the new yacht is scheduled to start in the Spring of this year and the building time should be just one year, although Mr Koopmans is convinced they can also build the yacht in seven months, however he prefers to do it perfect than quickly. Superyacht of the Week: The 43 metre explorer Axantha II

JFA shipyard has announced the recent delivery of superyacht Axantha II. This yacht was ordered by the owner of first Axantha, built and delivered by JFA in 2003. Her hull and superstructures made of aluminium, give her a moderate displacement which, combined with reasonably sized engine, allow her to reach a speed of 14.8 knots. JFA delivers superyacht Axantha II

The Nautique Refit and New Build Department, part of the Nautique Group, an international marine equipment, yacht interior fabricator and yacht management organisation, has recently commenced a major refit of a 54m, 715 gross ton super yacht in Istanbul Turkey on behalf of a European client.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/135435/image/large-3611c55dd24c082fb5a02173f26c1221.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/135435" class="legacy">The yacht formerly known as Fils de Grace and Sir Arthur J, was originally constructed in Holland in 1968 as a cable laying ship. In the 90’s she was converted to a yacht. The project is now known as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7" data-legacy="true" href="#managed-by-application">Touya</a>.This is the second major refit project undertaken by the Nautique Refit and new Build department. Last year the 38m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1424" data-legacy="true" href="#managed-by-application">Zeepaard</a> was extensively and successfully refitted in Istanbul by the group according to Don Dennison, the Touya Refit Project Manager and Orhan Celik, the Nautique Refit &amp; New Build Operations Manager.During the refit, the vessel will be brought up to full charter yacht class, and unrestricted navigation under BV supervision. All modifications will be made so she will be MCA LY2 compliant.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/135436/image/large-e68c49f2e988df64ae0aa83a5bb82f66.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/135436" class="legacy">Nautique retained Mulder Design as Naval Architects, while the client has appointed Tim Saunders Yacht Design for the interior design and exterior styling, and Castle Rock Marine as owner’s representative.At present the Touya has been totally stripped of all furniture, wiring, piping and all machinery. The only items left aboard that will not be changed are the twin rudders and the original steering gear.The Nautique Refit &amp; New Build Department, expects to re-launch the Touya in early 2012. Nautique is firmly committed to developing expertise in medium and large yacht refits, Nautique is convinced that refits when carried out in the right Turkish shipyards, using the best local skilled labour and combined with experienced management can be very cost competitive.

Vripack Yacht &amp; Ship Brokers reports the sale of the 37 metre research vessel Axantha. The luxury explorer yacht was built in 2003 by JFA in France to a Vripack design. Vripack sells Axantha and lists Ocean 55 project

Following an extensive refit and re-decoration, Vripack managed to sell Putty VI (ex Turmoil) for the second time in 3 years. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126061/image/large-9e7a08f1634264834568db3c450e22e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126061">She was sold to a very experienced American yachtsman who will travel around the globe for the years to come. Vripack Brokerage sells Putty VI, again

Following the success of Axantha (37m) and Bystander (42m), JFA just received an order for a new motor yacht. The hull and superstructure of the 43m yacht will be fabricated out of aluminium. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125204/image/large-50b20ce938b73e017a94be9e91572395.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125204">This new yacht was ordered by a repeat client of JFA and Vripack from The Netherlands designed her exterior. The profile of the research vessel will be familiar in the design to Axantha, which was delivered in 2003. She will be powered by 2 Cummins engines of 750HP and will have a transatlantic range. She will be build according the rules of the North European Luxury Yacht standard (Bureau Veritas classification and MCA compliant). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125205/image/large-cff89947b2123f6e6d9b0d015e20d7c1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125205">The interior space comprises a total area of 340m², separated over 3 decks, and the yacht can accommodate 10 guests and 8 crew members.
